EDITOR’S NOTE

BUSINESS SCHOOLS AT THEIR BEST

T

he progress of business in any country goes in tandem with the progress in business education. Realising this, educational institutions in the country have pepped up their curriculum and training systems while many new management institutions have also come up to meet the growing demands. From barter system to globalisation, from mercantile to industrial capitalism and start-ups, the Indian business scenario has undergone a seismic change. In the 18th century, India and China were known to be the largest manufacturing economies in the world. But later the country went dormant for quite some time. Going back to history, the business prospects in India had led to the British's East India Company seizing control here. As per the research in the book, India Means Business, India and the East Asian countries had almost 60 percent share of the world economy two thousand years ago. Now India and these East Asian countries are rising again. If the learned economists are to be believed, India is expected to be one of the economic superpowers in 2020-2021. India has indeed traversed a long way since its days of barter system.

India’s emergence in the economic zone could be related to the young population and a steady consumer market and with this also rose the need to refurbish and enhance education in business management. Many schools of management have been doing commendable work in training global leaders. Business managers can make better business decisions as they understand the economic theory and scenario better. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an adverse impact on admissions to business colleges globally. But in India, the scenario is not yet that bad. In fact, 2.3 lakh students applied for CAT 2020, which may not be a big figure as compared to the previous years, but it is a decent figure compared to the world. An integrative approach to education is the name of the game today. And business studies in India could never have been this good. The educators are also working tirelessly to incorporate innovations in their teaching methodologies to impart the necessary knowledge and skills required for being a competent leader at the global level.

Internships and live projects by companies for Bschool students go a long way in training the students in the most appropriate way and give them first-hand experience of the present market scenario. Colleges, now, also focus on making the students industry-ready since this is the demand of the time and it also equips students to take on the professional world with confidence. In appreciation of these B-schools that are churning out the best in their management students, we at The Knowledge Review, came up with a special edition – Best Business Schools in India for 2021, that are continuously bringing innovations in their curriculum. This is the right time to study business management in India and go global on the professional front. Read to know more. T R

New Teaching Methodologies in the Age of Technology

T

he first technological invention came about two million years ago. From tool making and fire igniting to the 21st-century world as we know it, we have come a long way. Today, we relish the age of technology! The social connections we establish are a result of technology. I am talking about software that runs social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, etc. Even the purchases we make online are a consequence of targeted ads (powered by AI). Electric cars, autonomous driving, 5G data networks — the list goes on. Technology has taken over the world. And like everything else, it has made its way into the education system as well. It is gaining popularity in academic circles as educators from all over the world are looking for ways to spin traditional teaching methods into tech-education, helping students keep up with a world that is growing exponentially digital. We are shifting from the "sage on the stage" (where the students passively listened to the teacher) to the "guide on the side" schooling method where students learn on their own by gathering relevant information via technology. Such a tech-driven education system allows teachers to deliver personalized lectures to students and makes space for students to understand the learning content at their own pace and ability level. Today, colleges vouch for such a system and believe that employing new teaching methodologies is paramount in establishing the best possible education system. The primary aims of colleges include: Ÿ Preparing students to be technologically skilled for modern workplaces. Ÿ Equipping students with digital and online applications and tools encourage students to test their creativity.

Change for Better

I

n a changing world it pays to be a generalist, not a specialist.”

Managers are classic generalists. The evolution of management thought is a process that started since the early days of humans. It began since the period we saw the need to live in groups and build civilisations. Management has been practiced in one way or the other since civilisation began. Fast-forwarding to the industrial revolution, which brought drastic change and suddenly, the need to develop a more holistic and formal management theory became a necessity.

Pankaj Saran commented: “Management education in India took off in a significant way with the de-regulation brought about by the AICTE which led to a huge influx of talented young minds coming in from a traditional university system and learning the lexicon of management to service the very high growth rates in almost all sectors of the Indian economy.”

A brief examination of the modern history will reveal that companies have been putting different management theories into practice. Not only have these helped to increase productivity but they have also improved the quality of services. In the 80s, there was an increase in growth and competitive level in the global economy, as a result of convergence of economies, which shifted focus from traditional management theories as organisations became non-restive as they tried to proffer solution to newer management issues.

Pankaj Saran is the president of EMPI institutions (Entrepreneurship & Management Processes International), among other things. He added: “Further, high levels of obsolesce and low levels of learning and teaching along with life skill preparation necessitated a demand for a comprehensive management education programme, that could give students contemporary education, life-skill training, and practical exposure to the real world. Also, many specific sectors which were hitherto closed were opened up like BFSI, Media, Telecom, Automobiles etc. "The economy underwent a drastic transformation from a pure production economy to a consumeristic economy, which created a huge requirement of jobs in the marketing and financial services sector. Students from nonengineering background suddenly found a huge wealth of managerial jobs, much beyond than what was available earlier.”

Prof. Dr Sanjiv Marwah, Director of JK Business School, says, “The landscape of management education has undergone a huge transition over the years. Management education in India has been on a rising spree, both in demand and in supply. With the changing business dynamics, there is a huge demand for motivated business professionals who are equipped with the skill sets of a specialist, and possess knowledge required to deal with multiple challenges.”

Dr P. R. Sodani, President of IIHMR University, also spoke about the issue: “Higher education adapts to a new economic landscape and job market, the world of digital communication, and the ongoing march of globalization. Management studies have changed leaps and bounds. Advances in artificial intelligence, blockchain, digitalization, and technology have also enforced many adults in the working to reconsider their careers as the job market changes.”

Hence, management studies have moved beyond the typical managerial roles and prepare students to deal with new complexities arising in the global business environment, according to Dr Marwah. Dr Sanjiv Marwah is an industryveteran-turned-academician and is widely respected for his ability to bridge the gap between industry and academia. He added: “Business Schools are now focused on lessons based on the critical link between real-life issues and research-based education. The present and future of management education lies on tech-savvy curriculum, strong industry connect and learning beyond academics in order to nurture the managers of tomorrow.”

“Many want to quickly transform, requiring a whole new set of soft skills, looking at the job market demands. These situations have helped welcome fast-paced learning with highly specialized topics into the fold, such as online courses in various soft skill development as well. Now, there are older students on the campus, with part-timers joining the ranks.”

In a constantly evolving economic context, the use of interactive teaching tools combined with multimedia equipment ensures that students undergo a thorough educational transformational change, through the creative use of Blended Learning methodology. Efficient and interactive tools made available to students enables them to fulfil the needs of not only the company which engages them but also the business, as a whole. Hence, they develop the fundamental knowledge and skills in the key areas of a company: finance, management, and marketing. MBAESG Paris has about 38 different programs in MBA itself, which includes discipline-specific MBAs like MBA in finance, MBA in international business, MBA in marketing, and many others. The institute is well renowned for its MBAs in domainspecific postgraduate programs – such as sports, luxury, and hospitality. MBAESG India currently facilitates two programs which started from 2017 onwards: MBA Sports Management; and MBA Luxury Management. Soon the institute plans to launch its MBA in Hospitality Management as well.

were big multinationals like ITW Global, Puma, Nike, AUDI, Decathlon, and many other exciting industry dominators. Owing to the MBAESG's association with Jain (Deemed-to-be University), students passing out get a dual certification: First of which is an MBA degree from Jain (Deemed-to-be University) which is AICTE driven and accepted by the UGC; Secondly they also get a Professional Graduation Certification from MBAESG Paris which aligns with the Parisian and French pedagogical system and philosophy. The future business leaders graduating from this institution can avail this dual certification program, which spans over two years or four semesters and helps students achieve their educational and certification needs globally. A New Perspective and a Fresh Approach A question now beckons: What makes the learning experience at MBAESG so unique and transformational and yet so very fulfilling? The answer lies in the first principles of the uniquely designed operating model which is divided into two parts: the pedagogy and the industry interface. The unique operating model of MBAESG caters to every foundational need that defines a complete education for business administration, both in the domains of sports management and luxury management. Starting with the pedagogical elements: Ÿ

Academic Outlook To date, the institute has facilitated the graduation of two batches of business aspirants already – first graduating 2019 garnering massive success in terms of placements, and just last year, the second batch did the same. There

It is important to note that this element of MBAESG has not been replicated by anybody else in India. Ÿ

Learning by Doing – This is an apprenticeship method of pedagogy where you roll up your sleeves and get to work. The leadership of ESG believes that apart from just theory, learning happens when the students engage with the learning process and there are specific measurable outputs. This includes internships, presentations, conferences, organizing events.

– while pursuing their research, the students invariably come across various other associated subjects and knowledge, sparking the latent interest of inquisitive learners. The students cannot become exemplary professionals if they do not grasp the functional understanding and the ground reality of their respective sectors. MBAESG understands this fully well and thus provides a platform for a very strong industry interface to facilitate holistic learning, whose key elements are as follows: Ÿ

Ÿ

Academic Rigour – Several core subjects which are spread over the four semesters emphasize a strong theoretical underpinning, which gets manifested in reports, presentations; outcomes, which are a result of Project-centric Learning and Outcome-based Education.

Ÿ

Case Studies – The students at MBAESG must undertake a lot of case studies, mostly from the USA and Western Europe, and others from India.

Ÿ

Directed and Independent Learning – The faculty members and educators direct their respective students to go and do their research (direct), on the completion of which these students have to present what they have learned. The students are entrusted with the idea that learning is their responsibility, and the teachers facilitate the process. This translates into independent learning

Ÿ

Business-Academia Partnership through Industry Field Visits and Internships: The institute is strongly connected with the sports and learning sectors through partnerships that manifest into lucrative internship programs. Uniquely, there are three internship programs that the students have to undertake.

Two-week experiential-learning trip to Paris: Between the second and third semesters, all the students get the opportunity to go to Paris to understand the wider scope of their studies, interact with students their age, form bonds, build networks, and understand each other's cultural differences. Recently, the students received a masterclass by Gerard Houllier (late), the manager of Liverpool FC. This kind of massive exposure is very rare, certainly one of a kind as compared to other MBA institutions. Ÿ Eminent Guest Speakers: Some of the eminent guest speakers that

Ÿ

Business Simulation: Perhaps the most interesting part of the whole MBA program is the business simulation games. Operating as teams and split the tasks of marketing, production, operational oversight, distribution channels, etc., the students compete against each other to see each other in a strategically and tactically oriented game, juggling multitudes of tasks and challenges at the same time.

Leader of the Pack Coming from a varied background, Mr. Biswas has got to live two lives in a single lifetime. The first was spent being a professional in the hospitality industry for more than 14 years. He worked in different organizations like the Oberoi Hotels, The Park Hotels, Radisson Hotels, and various other illustrious organizations. A story he recounts is that of the opening of India’s first-ever Spanish restaurant in Delhi, and one of his first guests was the Crown Prince of Spain (now the King of Spain). This soon led to Mr. Biswas's prominence in the hospitality industry, but at this time, he desired to be in academia. So, after leaving the industry and finishing up a course from Leeds Beckett University, he joined the academic body – teaching management, research, and strategy. He was often called to lead MBA programs in India, for different universities such as one in Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia, and Cardiff Metropolitan University in Wales, UK, then the Anglia Ruskin
