Exceptional Career Options after Earning MBA Degree

ue to the increased demands of MBA degree, several institutes have started offering this course autonomously. Most of the students today want to study management because it is a perfect gateway to well-paid jobs with great prospects for progress. The numbers of business graduates are rising daily, eventually the quality of business graduates are decreasing gradually. But the demand for well-talented employees in business management profile is still growing. In the modern corporate world, employer wants to hire people who have practical knowledge as well as the ability to communicate well. It now apparently seems that the business organizations are looking for something more than just business degrees and that is where the modern day tactics, practical learning and newly invented strategies of the business schools come into the play. But it is not necessary that all students can fit into the MNC’s jobs, some of them have dreams to achieve something big! There is an absolutely buzzing startup culture right now in India. Apart from this MNC’s job, entrepreneurship is also a viable employment alternative and more MBAs are now starting up their own business. And, management programs give the tools, skills, and knowledge required to turn a great idea into a successful business. Moreover, the entrepreneurs contribute to economic growth of the country by creating more jobs and wealth of the nation. Most of the students think that after MBA they will go for the company which provides them the highest salary. But it is the time to stop thinking about the highest paying jobs in the well-known global companies. It would be a wise decision to work with the organization which offers a great learning experience, rather than merely the highest salary. One can go for the startups with scarce resources- where data is limited, and doing something is the only way to learn about it. In such small scale enterprise, person can learn the real management and can imply the management theories. And, will get exposure to all aspects of setting up a business from scratch. It is significant to learn something rather than just doing job for the sake of high packages and after some year later salary will take care of itself. T R

The Emerging Trends in

Management Education in India M

anagement education has taken different shapes in India. During 1985-90, due to privatization, management education was offered by several institutions and it was like a mushroom growth. The regulatory bodies were allotted to grow it like an unorganized sector. But after 2010, slowly the regulatory bodies started controlling the management institutions, mainly by using Information Technology (IT). Basically, management education is divided into three categories: (a) Management colleges, where only undergraduate (UG) Management programs are offered like BBA/ BBM and teaching is the main job for the faculty (b) Management institutions, where Master’s program are offered like MBA/ PGDM exclusively or in addition to UG programs and along with teaching,

32

faculty works on research and (c) Business schools or shortly, ‘B-Schools’ offers exclusively the Master’s program like MBA/ PGDM exclusively and faculty works on teaching, research, training, academic administration and consultancy. B-Schools, by its nomenclature, should be autonomous and self-sustained. Initially, MBA programs started in university departments and later in their affiliated colleges with an objective as an additional degree with just knowledge transfer. Later, with the advent of IIMs, PGDMs became popular, which imparted knowledge through practical learning using ‘Case Studies’. B-Schools that practicing IIM Model are very successful, and IIMs are conducting training Programs on Case Study Pedagogy and facilitating other management institutions to imitate the IIM Model in training the students to learn practical

Presently, he is serving as Director General, IBMR Business School, Hubli, Karnataka. He has more than 25 years of rich experience in Teaching, Research, Administration, Training and Consultancy. application of management. The greatness of IIMs is the faculty members do research in developing the cases and then they teach those cases in the class, whereas in other management institutions, faculty downloads the cases and use. B-Schools started working on ‘Entrepreneurship’, but it took some time to create awareness in the mindsets of Indian students about entrepreneurship. Students joining B-Schools with the only motto of getting jobs and hence placement became the pivotal element. Slowly, B-Schools used ‘Placement ’as their marketing strategy to attract candidates. Majority of the B-Schools, even though they offer entrepreneurship as a program, very few Institutions like EDI, Ahmedabad able to withstand on this concept. But, with the recent boom in start-ups, B-Schools are focusing on entrepreneur development programs once again. B-Schools are now able to attract budding Entrepreneurs and nurturing their ideas through the ‘Incubation Centers’. B-Schools in India are facing problem in getting qualified and experienced Faculty. In the process of training students to industry requirements, B-Schools are able to support students for good placements. The Ph.D. in management program offered by universities and FPMs offered by B-Schools are giving partial support to ‘Education Industry’ to get faculty in management field. On the other hand, all Institutions are going for quality norms like NAAC, NBA etc. where the process includes lot of documentation with data/information from various departments. Some of the Management of B-Schools are able to train their faculty for academic administrative works and offering better positions like Dean or Director in various verticals like admissions, student services, academics, and placements etc. With the reforms that are taking place at higher education with a focus on technical and management education through clear-cut policies from the government, B-Schools are slowly moving from fixed specializations to Choice-based Credit System (CBCS) and this seems to be a good direction for management education as (a) uniformity in curriculum across country (b) freedom to the students to choose their courses without intervention by the Institute (c) easy for any credit transfer with any international institute during any student exchange program (d) student will be getting what direction his career has to forward by selecting his course credits semester wise (e) student gets advantage during placements as recruiting companies are looking all-rounder profiles not just specialization in one vertical. All business strategies are now connected with “Big Data” and “Business Analytics” became a common factor as a new tool of understanding businesses. B-Schools are offering the analytics courses at different levels in the form of (a) certificate courses – long term and short term; (b) PGDM in analytics – as a full pledged 2-year Master’s program. Analytics have taken into all verticals /specializations (a) HR Analytics (b) Financial Analytics and (c) Retail Analytics. Majority of the B-Schools are offering analytics, even though they may not be having resources, but as on a third party service, they are offering training programs in analytics. The current job market for MBAs is good and expecting bright future with the support of analytics. Government of India has initiated “Digital India” and slowly all sectors are on digital platform. Education sector has also taken its role in such an initiate and exploring the possibility of technology-based learning in the classrooms. Flipped classrooms are becoming popular compared to the traditional classrooms. This is an instructional strategy where material will be given through online in addition to the lecture sessions. This also includes the home works /assignments/tests /projects which students can do after the lecture sessions through online. Now slowly educational sector started using MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) in which online education for unlimited participation through web, In MOOCs, in addition to traditional lecture sessions, one can find video lectures, readings, Problem Sets, interactive sessions through forums, quizzes and assignments. One has to register and it is a free of cost for learning, but if you want a certificate for your learning, then only you have to make payment. IIM-B has started giving training to faculty of different Institutions in how to integrate MOOCs in management education. AICTE has indicated that faculty should go for refresher courses on MOOCs in different topics and asking them to register, as the future of education is mainly ‘Digital’. T R

Study Smart yourself why you want to learn; is it to get an ‘A’ or is it to get admitted to your dream university. Many people look at studying as a compulsory task, not a pleasure or a prospect to learn. Although being this is reasonable, but scientists have found that how you approach something and mindset matters almost as much as what you do. Mindset is the key factor when it comes to smart study. Although grades and money are essential, if they are your sole intention to learn something, it will keep you from enjoying your studies, and probably also keep you from learning. Attaching an extrinsic reward to any activity significantly reduces the intrinsic joy of the activity. Your performance at a particular task can seriously suffer if you focus on the results of an activity instead of the process. Think positively when you study; and remind yourself of your skills and aptitudes. Always aim at making yourself better at your work. Pace Yourself, Brace Yourself Watch your breath; it helps you calm your mind before you sit down to study. Spending a few minutes focusing on your breath can work wonders in helping you unruffle your mind, and cultivate your attention. Various studies have shown that working on your breath and mind enhances your focus and concentration. Distractions are inevitable; one can only be fully attentive when you have no thoughts, and this can help you achieve your goal. When there is a distraction, a person becomes frustrated and impatient; this is avoidable. Set a timer for yourself about 20 or 25 minutes, and each time you find yourself distracted, try to notice when it has taken place. Then take a few more breaths and get back to work. Practicing mindfulness regularly will eventually allow you to have fewer distractions and will help manage performance anxiety. Being in the right mind, calm, and composed during the exam season allows you to focus on the work at hand. Stressing out during your exam will make you forget what you have learned. To avoid this you need to take a moment and stop working—take a deep breath. 3-5 deep breaths should do the trick. It will help you calm yourself and increase your focus.

Mix the New with the Old “Old is gold”, with a slight integration of old studying methods with new, they can work wonders. As technology and ways of learning advance, there is a need for a constant upgrade in study strategies as well. For instance, using an iPad to keep notes or watching a YouTube video to better understand a concept is fine, but it’s crucial to remember that some old-school strategies, like written practice, are timeless. Nothing can beat a paper and pencil when it comes to learning. Another way you should definitely follow is flashcards and quizzing yourself. They help you recollect and eventually remember during the exam. Learning by Way of Technology Our everyday life is surrounded by technology. To go through the day, you need to be tech savvy. Due to the great level of advancements in technology, it has taken over everything, including the classrooms. Recent studies show that integration of technology into the student’s life can benefit a great deal. Technology helps build up greater networks with people, growing content further than ever before, and allows you to create new ideas. Technology brings student closer to their dreams and helps prepare them for their future careers. It provides the opportunity to students to improve the communication with their classmates and instructors by promoting collaboration. Further, it helps student access up to date information easily and quickly. Applying new technology like VR to a traditional classroom set up, can boost the learning experience and create new prospects. Old ways together with new strategies can surely help you excel in your exam, succeed in life, and help you become a smart learner. When you study rather than the quest to achieve good grades or admission to college, engage in the process of learning itself. Follow your breath, it is only through breathing that you will be able to return to the present moment, which will activate your body’s calming response. This will allow you to think more clearly and rationally. Use technology; it empowers you to be more creative, connected, and to explore new opportunities. Try blending these ways in your schedule while studying and remember to work on your mindset; it will help build up your attention and filter out distractions. Good luck! T R

WHY THE ENTRY OF BLOCKCHAIN IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR IS A BREAKTHROUGH AND A NECESSITY FOR THE FUTURE CONSIDERING ITS MANY BENEFITS ?

A

t the outset I would like to explain what Blockchain technology is before we get into its significance in the education sector. Blockchain is a decentralised distributed digital ledger, which is collectively maintained by a network of computers. It can be visualized as a large ledger book shared among many people (members) who collectively keep the records. No data on the ledger can be modified by a single person without every other member of the ledger agreeing to the change. Moreover, the ledger book is not stored in one place but is distributed among all the members, ensuring that there is no single person who can tamper with the records, which is highly probable in a centralised database. This makes Blockchain technology hugely secure and is predominantly used in the financial services domain. When we hear the term Blockchain, the first thing that comes to mind is Bitcoin. People often use the two terms interchangeably. What we must bear in mind is that Blockchain is a technology and Bitcoin is one of its applications. Similar to Bitcoin there could be multiple other applications of Blockchain, across a plethora of industries, sectors and domains. According to a Gartner report, 80% of use cases of Blockchain were in financial services during 2017. In 2018 the number has gone down to 45% for financial services, with the use case in the other domains also finding importance with technologists. While Walmart and IBM are working on the Hyperledger

Fabric Blockchain to streamline the former's supply chain, Blockchain-powered AI platform Endor is revamping the Business Intelligence landscape. Qtum has created its own hybrid Blockchain, based on Ethereum, to provide technologists a way to build and deploy decentralised apps. IOTA, a crypto token designed specifically for IoT needs, has emerged as a power efficient and scalable platform that uses connected devices to validate value transfers on the distributed ledger. Blockchain can also be used to fortify identity management at a time when there is a rapid rise in identity theft and fraud due to the expansion of the internet. Similarly, there could be a galore of use cases where Blockchain is already being deployed or is being developed. That brings us to the adoption of Blockchain in the education sector. While the adoption of Blockchain is still in its infancy in the education industry, I believe it has the potential to make the education system more dependable and trustworthy. There could be multiple areas of application of Blockchain, but the most prominent use case in the education sector is to issue digital diplomas to students. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was among the first institutions globally and Globsyn Business School was one of the first institutions in India, which began issuing digital certificates on Blockchain. The rollout of the diplomas on Blockchain will allow the students and their prospective employers to access the diploma credentials from any geographical location, without making any physical requests to the institutions. | August 2018 |

All students receiving a digital certification will be able to access and share the credentials of their diplomas with future employers and higher education institutions around the world without any hassles. They will be granted a private and encrypted digital key linked to their certificates. This digital key effectively reduces the time and effort of having to go through traditional processes for documentation and verification of academic credentials. The move to Blockchain technology also warrants the certificates to be tamper-proof and eliminates the possibility of production of fake certificates. Blockchain can be also utilized to create an independent learning platform which facilitates the exchange of knowledge between students and faculty, without the need for external control authorities or regulatory bodies. Acknowledgement of excellence in academics can be vastly improved using Blockchain to reward students with digital tokens for their achievements. These tokens could be transferred as credits by students in their future academic pursuits across universities and schools. Using Blockchain, a knowledge bank can be set up for students, teachers, entrepreneurs and leaders, across geographies and economies, to contribute their knowledge and learnings, which can be accessed by them and future generations. Application of Blockchain in education sector may be a relatively new concept, but technologists already see an infinite array of possibilities with its secure nature, allowing stakeholders to gain enough confidence to make good use of this technology over time. And this ultimately upholds the very essence of education, which is, to share knowledge without tampering or trifling its value. T R
