Exploring Institutes with a Holistic Approach

I

n the last five years, our nation has witnessed a surge in educational brands and franchise based schools along with the group-led educational institutes. These institutes have transformed the conventional education into a comfortable and commercialized entity. Building educational brands are not enough and there is definitely a bigger picture ahead to help it sustain. This is where the true challenges lies. Education as a brand can be seen as an investment. These days, parents focus more on the brand name rather than other factors like educational and infrastructural facilities and career opportunities the institute offers. Hence, there lies a great challenge for brands to bring innovation and much needed change in the interaction methodologies taking place in the classroom, moving them ahead from the traditional methods of education and focusing on the overall growth of students. The Knowledge Review thus presents a special issue “India’s 10 Best Education Brands for 2019”, which highlights the best educational brands, which are providing a more adequate and equalitarian education system. excellent infrastructural facilities, career opportunities and giving them exposure in terms of the need of the hour, keeping them well acquainted with technological advancements are some of the key components of becoming a successful education institute in the education fraternity. Transforming into a Brand Entity It’s not an overnight task to become a brand, it takes years of hard work and toiling for long hours to create a niche in the market and become a brand name. The responsibility that comes with it is immense and it often builds pressure to be able to

sustain and maintain the brand worth. Also the competition is a big factor as the market is very saturated today and there are a number of institutes which are at the top of their game and are continue to grow with every single day. In order to become a brand entity, there are some key features that one can opt for. The most important one being - to stand-out amongst all and this is very important in the recent times, what more are you offering and how well are you able to build that up is what makes one unique amongst others. Consistency is a signiďŹ cant component as when a brand is repeatedly performing well; it will attract more crowd towards it, which in turn can make it known to many. These are the strategic aspects of growing and becoming a brand entity, the other valuable component is offering quality content where if the content is new, fresh and appealing with modern outlooks deďŹ nitely individuals are drawn towards it. In the beginning its tough, as the number of people following or opting for a particular institute are less in count, but remember to respect and value that number as a following of hundred is only going to attract the next hundred. Mediums of Advertising Advertisement is a powerful medium which can never go wrong, be it the traditional method of promotion or the upfront and trending social media promotions. To become a potential brand entity, advertisement plays a very important role and since the very beginning thorough research work needs to be conducted, a strategy should be decided. Also, understanding the current market conditions and studying the pros and cons of the market is a must. Once the plan/strategy is implemented then the step-wise execution process starts.

brand value. Also, it is imperative to be well acquainted with the on-going trends of designing and visualization as it makes it more interactive among the users. Having a backend team of digital marketers and strategists are a must as these professionals are good at handling the websites and social media platforms. Foreign Collaborations between Brands Brand collaborations have become an essential aspect in growing popularity of institutes and have helped the education institutes increase their outreach. These kinds of collaborations among institutes on national and international level give students exposure and broaden their perspective on various subjects/topics. The opportunities a student can get through an international platform is commendable, which in turn will help a student to excel to their maximum potential. Also the students are able to learn new and advance studies and have an interaction among other students from different walks of life. The faculty and teaching methods vary from institute to institute, which gives the students a chance to be open to experience the new methods and to inculcate and learn the most out of it. Collaboration between two prestigious brands is a win-win situation for both education institutes, which will increase their brand worth in upcoming time and add glory all through its way. A strong association or collaboration, which gains a success, will deďŹ nitely become a long-term partnership adding an extra touch of its feature. T R

In the current times, the traditional method of promotions have switched and shifted to the modern methods of promotions as social media is the name of change in the new game. More and more brands are turning to social platforms and embracing it completely as the youth is majorly placed on social media and it readily accepts it. After becoming a brand entity one has to maintain the sort of momentum and be consistent as there are lot of expectations and responsibilities after becoming an established

INNOVATIVE TRAINING PROCEDURES FOR

Development of Teachers F

rom the inception of mankind, a multitude of things has been said and written about a teacher. In one of the greatest religious scriptures of not only Indian culture but of all times – the Bhagwad Gita – the teacher has been defined as a house of wisdom, spirituality, and a guide on the path of salvation. Teachers play a pivotal role in the society as they are the torchbearers immensely influencing the development of children during their formative years, the adolescent stage marked with the constant curiosity and the know it all, yet confused adult stage. Teachers not only teach students but are building future society. Extensive studies have indicated that when teachers are effective in the classroom and follow the pedagogy that enables students to learn, the students develop higher interest and a higher level of learning. Classroom – Epitomized by Students’ Diversity A classroom is usually an amalgamation of students from diverse demographics such as culture, religion, family background, region, socioeconomic status etc. In presence of such diversity, a new challenge is to invent and incorporate teaching ways that could cater to the

24

needs of every student. Teachers must innovate and strategies to understand the close interrelation between diversification and flexibility patterns of teaching for higher and more productive impact. A culture sensitization workshop understanding the underlying beliefs, characteristics and customs should be a part of teacher’s social skills development. The more diversified and flexible educating procedures are, the more it will exercise a universal access policy to meet the diverse needs of the students. Teacher Teaching and Student Teaching Module Teachers have traditionally been the sole gatekeepers of everything that unfolds in a classroom and at times may have only conventional knowledge to offer. However, in the modern era, it remains a fact to be highlighted that teachers must be trained to collaborate the ownership of learning with students. This can provide opportunities for students to experiment with new ideas, new roles, new cognitive abilities and new associations. Peer influences play a crucial role and together students are able to explore options and possibilities by not only embracing knowledge and technology but also learning as an organic whole.

There could be a plethora of strategies such as personalization, student advisories, peer tutoring and instructions, team teaching, small learning communities and so on. PBT (Project Based Teaching) – PBL (Project Based Learning) Taking teaching beyond the four walls of a classroom, conformist syllabus and mundane assignments is the foremost training procedure ensuring teachers’ development. The millennial generation learns through experiential learning and hence teachers must ensure that they are able to feed their curiosity through case studies, role plays and stimulators. Special FDPs should be arranged to enable teachers to develop this technique. Concept application projects, skills and cognitive ability based projects, community projects, etc., should be a part of the multidisciplinary curricula. Infrastructure Provision and the Ability to Use The abundance and competence of emergent technologies have provided ways and methods of making the classroom teaching an innovative one. It entails innovative methods of teaching namely virtual labs, audiovisual resources, equipment, materials, etc. All of these should be combined with methodologies that promote active teaching techniques to accentuate learning abilities. A survey of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) the application of ICT in teaching focused on the competence of the teachers to operate new technologies and the methods for improving their professional skill, displayed a dearth of this technical skill. Efforts should be made not only to develop infrastructure, make provision of access to the Internet and multimedia sources but also to provide technical workshops to teachers in order to successfully build and enhance these competencies. Teachers’ Love for their Subject Teachers with the high quality of teaching tend to do and find out more about their craft and pushing their own boundaries, looking for new topics and interesting ways to teach. In order to achieve a teacher’s maximum potential, continuing professional development should be introduced and implemented in their schedule. Teachers must be encouraged and incentivized to do research, being up-to-date on information and emerging technologies and tools and new curriculum resources. Teachers must undergo cognitive and metacognitive learning in order to achieve learning outcome in the form of changed beliefs about their practice or, even better, change in behaviour. Sometimes Easy Means Difficult A recent classroom based research finds out there is a huge impact of positive teaching method among students. It is hence imperative that a teacher possesses a certain set of knowledge and skills to understand how three domains must be integrated - emotional support, classroom organization and instructional support. In a fast-paced world today, patience has emerged to be a vital virtue to be possessed by teachers and students alike. While it might be comparatively easy for teachers to practice patience owing to their age and stature, students might lack similar levels of patience. Inculcation of patience in students with innovative techniques then surely becomes a way to contribute to student’s overall development. T R

The Rise of

INNOVATION IMPERATIVE in

EDUCATION W

ith the turn of the 21st century, developments in all fields of study and work have taken place at a tremendous pace. Unlike earlier times, the state of all things is inclined to change at the blink of an eye. Rapid progress in technology, research, the ever-evolving dynamics of learning, and producing effective outcomes have unquestionably put a demand on the field of education to move forward towards changing its ways of imparting knowledge and skills to students. The obvious step towards meeting this demand is making innovation an imperative part of the curricula followed in schools, colleges, and all other institutions of study worldwide. The rise of innovation in the field of education would definitely produce better results as students are geared towards testing their knowledge and skills continuously for producing better things and services that help mankind and our world as whole to sustain and progress in all ways possible. Let us look at why innovation is important in education and the ways in which innovation can be made to happen to produce better ends. Rising Problems Rising Challenges We have problems of pollution, population, traffic congestion, global warming, incurable or chronic diseases, and impediments of all sorts in all fields of study and work like factories, companies, industries, societies, health etc. These problems need effective solutions. Finding a solution requires innovation. Existing machines, methods, and services aren’t good enough to eradicate such problems. Grooming students from childhood itself towards working

30

upon ways for solving such problems will definitely produce better solutions. Effectual Use of Technological Advancements Massive developments in the technological arena have changed the ways in which education is being imparted today. The use of computers, projectors, power-point slides, and other audio-visual aids to facilitate learning is no new thing today. However, according to a research, it has been seen that even though technology has made it easy to access and learn things students are not able to produce the required outcomes when the time of exercising their knowledge and skills occurs. What, then, is the reason for this stagnation? The answer is obviously that students are not able to innovate on their body of knowledge and learning gained over the years. The factor causing this inability to innovate and meet the demands of current times is the erroneous method of imparting education that is being followed everywhere. Instead of using technology to develop examination systems, pass exams or just gain learning to meet some desired end, students, teachers and trainers must be groomed towards using that technology and learning to work upon developing ways, systems and services through which they could advance humanity in better ways. Students must innovate to solve innumerable problems that plague our mother earth. Innovation needs technology and technology itself produces innovative outcomes. Instead of educating self just to improve standards of living and fulfilling our worldly desires, or being just a consumer of everything tangible around, one FEBRUARY|2019

needs to innovate upon those tangible things and produce much better, improvised and even invented tangible things that advance our evolution towards more progress and so on. Thus, effective use of technology towards producing something better, and not being only consumers, is the need of our times. Innovation in Teaching and Learning Methods A classroom full of students sitting in columns with a single teacher writing on the whiteboard and blabbering something useful, not so useful and mostly ineffectual knowledge to learners is an impasse today. Development of new methods of teaching, training and learning is the need of the hour. Productive learning is a necessity and to facilitate productive learning changes in classroom setups, teaching methodology, classroom activities are necessary. For example, rather than teaching the concept of gravity or showing just a video of it, innovative ways through which gravitational concept could be explained in live ways, like demonstrating or role-playing the “ Newton- Apple” story through active participation and contribution of students, will be more effective. Students must be given tasks like to do projects on the concept and produce new things or discover things undiscovered. When the belief that there is always a possibility of discovery and innovation in everything is given to students, then definitely this learning would motivate them to exercise their brains towards producing and not just passing exams or completing homework. The Way Forward Examination oriented acquisition of knowledge and achieving degrees and jobs is not what today’s education system should limit itself to. It needs to move beyond that. Hence, it is without question that innovation is imperative in the field of education. It is the way forward towards solving issues of national and international importance and is definitely the tool for socio-financial and economic development of any country. It is the criterion upon which a country’s development index hinges and leads in the improvement of the living standards of people overall. T R T H E

nited we stand, Divided we fall”, this famous quote is a learning in its own form. Be it a country or a community when everyone comes together it brings a sense of bonding which empowers everyone to work as a team. Teaching these qualities of togetherness right from the beginning is a must, as kids at a young age learn and adapt to things quickly. Schools and Institutes should take effective initiatives to make students aware and understand the importance of working in a team. This can be done through various mediums – be it sports or extra curricula activities and many other. Potential Team Work Working in a team is fun, as common friends come along together or end up making new ones. It becomes an interactive session among students and also it gives them an opportunity to learn from each other. Being a team player makes you understand what is unity and team spirit and the joy of winning together makes the bond even stronger. Be it coming together for an inter school competition, an event or exhibition organized by school, working together can boost a student in many ways. Especially sports activities like cricket or football teaches team work and being a team player, as every player is different with his/her own strengthens and weakness, it creates a sense of equality for others to maintain and learn about team balance among the team. This in turn brings the students to learn about communities and how it is formed and a community of 10 students or 50 needs to have the same spirit of unity. Teachers taking Momentous Strides

and different things. According to a survey, when the teachers meticulously work with the students and build an interactive bond rather than a normal teacher-student relationship, the students are able to develop to their true potential. The simple gestures of greeting the students standing at the door or asking them about what they had for breakfast or how has their day been makes the students more interactive and builds a friendly relation between student and teacher. This in turn will make the student focus on significant improvements in academics rather than having a disruptive behavior or indulging in notorious activities. This way a teacher is able to bring the students together and help them learn more about each other and build a community among themselves. A teacher is a perfect mediator, who can bring all students together as he/she is the only one who knows about each and every student present in the classroom. Teachers also encourage students to participate and build their rapport amongst each other, which helps them be a part of a small and active community. Ways of Strengthening the Community Taking small steps and initiatives like conducting fun activities and sessions allow the students to open up and express themselves better. It builds confidence within students to mingle along/with one another and shape their communication skills. Here are some of the different activities which can be conducted: Giving Shout-Outs: This is the most simple and quick way to give students appreciation and celebrate each other’s little win. If a student has performed well in a particular test or has won an achievement or done a good deed, giving shout-out is a way of calling out his/her name aloud with a big round of an applause. Also, by cheering for the students, they are motivated and feel a

34

sense of pride to be really appreciated in front of the whole classroom. Talkative Tuesdays: After the weekend, students often don’t want to attend the classes as they still have the weekend fever on, but adding an extra touch by giving every day of the week an attractive theme like Motivated Monday or Talkative Tuesday will make the students engross in their work. A session of half an hour can be conducted in which every student is asked to either share about their weekends or their most memorable trip will make the students interact more and get over their usual monotonous routine of daily school and homework. This will also make the atmosphere/environment of the classroom lively, positive and fun. Sharing is Caring: A little act of sharing goes a long way, once you learn to share right from the beginning it will help one to know the importance of sharing and receiving. Sharing something as small as your lunch or lending your friend a pen will only cherish the bond of friendship between two individuals. Also, showing care towards classmates and friends will help students embrace their bond of friendship. A little note of assurance is always needed especially on our low days, when one is feeling sick, upset, or is concerned regarding studies, a lending hand to your friend will always make one feel better. Given here are some of the key traits for building a strong and active community, but it is not always an easy task, team work and friendships cannot be built in a day. Continuous working and coming together on every small occasion will help the students know each other more, which in turn will reflect in their friendship and strong community. T R
