‘‘ An Imperative Need for Media and Communication Studies

I

n most places of the world, you can’t go a day without encountering some or the other form of communication, whether it is the Internet, television or radio. In terms of Media and Communication, we are living in very exciting times. While traditional media such as film, television and radio are still greatly significant, the dawning of the internet age has really changed the entire paradigm. Though we might struggle to remember how things used to be; a decade ago, most online households were still using dial-up modems, and ten more years back, the internet was unheard of. In such a short span of time, media and communication have become an even greater business than it ever was before. Think of the companies and brands whose names have dominated the past years or so, and you will notice that they all fall under the media and communications umbrella. Thus, any claim, that media and communications studies are ‘soft’ or ‘irrelevant’, is rendered void and null. Real and immensely pertinent global issues and phenomena which affect the lives and livelihoods of the world’s population are put under the microscope by these entities. Moreover, the media technology industry proves to be even more crucial in the current era of social networking and online marketing. Given the rapid frequency at which communication occurs in the modern day, the media technology has had to consistently update itself with the practicality of the ever-changing times in order to deliver increasingly precise means of communication. But the technology cannot be supported by industrial expertise alone. An understanding of how media works is also essential to add understanding and historical context to the various forms of media. Thus, these studies pushed by both academic and industry players are there for people to understand the fundamentals of communication. After all, communication is at the heart of all human interactions, and media is the inevitable channel required to convey the necessary ideas and expressions to one another. In other words, communication is what makes society tick and media is the vehicle that will facilitate this. T R

Report Highlights: Generally, prospective online students didn’t care much whether their program was for-profit or nonprofit. Sixty-two percent of respondents said the status didn’t matter; 16 percent said they didn’t know the difference. Ÿ Business administration continues to be the most popular discipline for both undergraduate and graduate students. Nursing was the second-most popular subject among all students, followed by the field of computer science and engineering. Ÿ When asked about their online learning concerns, the highest percentages of students reported their ability to self-motivate during their online program (27 percent), perceptions about the quality of online study (27 percent) and the price of online study (26 percent). Ÿ

From chalkboards to iPads, innovative technology has been an essential part of the classroom for centuries. Prospective online students are skewing younger, tend to enrol in local institutions and put a program’s cost and reputation at the top of their priority list, according to a recent survey. Those and other findings are outlined in “Online College Students,” a July report by Aslanian arket

20

Research and the Learning House, a company that helps colleges and universities improve their online degree programs. The report, in its fourth year, surveyed about 1,500 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled, recently enrolled or about to be enrolled in online programs in spring 2015. Among the most surprising findings in the report, authors say, is the shifting age of online students. While distance education students are often assumed to be older, the report found the popularity of online undergraduate programs is growing among those under 25. Thirty-four percent of undergraduate online students were under the age of 25 this spring, up from 25 percent in 2012, according to the report. The percentage of online graduate students under 25 also grew, jumping from 13 percent in 2012 to 19 percent this year. Authors say these changes could be due to two factors: the economic pressure to work while going to school and increasing familiarity with online courses. Students “have had online courses in their background because many high schools now require an online course,” says study author Carol Aslanian, senior vice president of Aslanian Market Research. “If they have started college and are going back, many colleges have them. They are going to be groomed to appreciate it.” While online students can in theory enrol in any institution, most are drawn to local programs offered by schools they know. Half of online students live within 50 JANUARY | 2018

Trending Now But more women are in higher education in general, Aslanian says. Women represented 56 percent of undergraduates in fall 2013 and 59 percent of graduate students, according to a May 2015 report by the National Centre for Education Statistics. The percentage of female online students could also be the result of the kind of careers women pursue, Aslanian says. “A lot of the professions for which you need further education – health, social services, education – they are dominated by women,” she says. “Many men may go into business and on their own. The women-oriented employment fields require more education.”

miles of their campus and 65 percent live within 100 miles, the report found. That’s not too surprising to Joel Hartman, vice provost for information technologies and resources at the University of Central Florida, who says most universities successfully recruit online students within the geographic areas they serve. “We do very well,” says Hartman, who also serves as chief information officer. “It’s how we got to have 38 percent of our credit hours generated online.” When it comes to choosing an online program, the report found that prospective students put cost at the top of their priority list. Forty-five percent of respondents said they selected the most inexpensive institution out of their options, up from 30 percent the year before. Two-thirds of students did not receive a scholarship when they enrolled in their online program. “Cost seems to be an increasing concern” says Dave Clinefelter, report author and chief academic officer at Learning House. Reputation was the second most important decisionmaking factor after cost, although a significant percentage of students also considered whether the institution was recognized as high quality, the numbers of hours required for study each week and whether there were set class meeting times. Once again, the report found women to be more highly represented in online programs than men. At the undergraduate level, 70 percent of students were women. Among graduate students, 72 percent of students were female. T H E

N O W L E DEducation. G E RInnovation. E V I Success E W JANUARY | 2018

While the report highlights various trends in student preferences, Clinefelter is quick to point out that online students are split on many issues, from how often they would like to engage with a faculty member to their tolerance for synchronous, or live, courses. While it's easy to stereotype, he says, “these students are not all alike in a variety of ways.” Today’s ever-evolving technology continues to reinvent the way students learn from preschool to the doctorate level. The advancement of artificial intelligence-equipped tools has made it possible for nearly anyone, anywhere to connect to and utilize the global network of information. The future of online schooling is exploding. Traditional learning is far-reaching but definitely within the realm of possibility, one would think, in regards to the future of online/distance learning systems. But, one thing you can definitely rely on is that schools, private and public, are keeping up with the technology as it becomes available as they all wish to stay ahead of the curve in order to stay competitive. The future of online schools is not only exciting, but necessary. Achieving an education, no matter at what level, via an online option removes barriers, redefines learning, allows for faster results, and, many times, can be obtained free of charge. Virtual and augmented reality are already taking the foundation of our educational systems by storm, but where will up-and-coming enhancements in the realm of portable, wearable, and implantable tech take us? To infinity and beyond. T R

AISFM has established itself as a premium Film School in India for people who are interested to learn Film & Media related concepts on a profound and professional level. Wedged in Historic Annapurna Studios, Hyderabad fosters a delightfully diverse environment students can thrive on… I thoroughly enjoyed learning here. It nurtured me with right skillset to work in media & entertainment industry.” __IRFAN FARAS (Consultant, Distribution and Syndication, National Film Development Co. Ltd.) “At AISFM we learnt each aspect of filmmaking. It was easy for me later, since I learnt about everything in the school. Even though we worked on small projects we looked into each department; whereas in the industry it is divided into each department, so the knowledge and prior experience helped. It didn’t feel new and it was easy working. We learnt what to do and what not to do. We learnt that planning is very important in any department, only then there is clarity.” __HARI MRUTYUMJAY (Associate Director, Big Ben Cinemas)

Specialist’s Viewpoint

he emergence of social media has created a new avenue for facilitating daily information and communication needs. As technology grows and expands our range of communication, social media is becoming a vital tool for daily social interaction. It creates opportunity for people to interact with each other in a way that is both helpful and essential to socially motivate people. The rapid fire quick communication style that captivates the millennials and other generation has shifted our conversations from ‘face-to-face’ instances to ‘through –the-screen’ ones.

Social Media is described as the collection of online communication channels dedicated to community based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration. Some of the commonly known communication websites are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. With the help of this websites people can share memories, reconnect with friends, plan events, and communicate almost instantaneously. The social media has positive as well as negative impacts on communication skills. Social networks have become the central facilitator for daily communication with peers, family and acquaintances. It is affecting our relationships and decreases the quality of inter-personal communication. Another impairment of communication skills caused by the extensive use of social media platform is the impoverishment of language. Using messengers’ people often use shortened versions of words in order to type and deliver their messages as quickly as possible. Shortened versions like “k”, “ttyl”, “ur”, “der”, “gr8”,”cu”,”tc” and so on completely ruins the grammar and syntax. It also develops the use of slang terms and sometimes people tend to forget that they are neglecting the beauty of language when they are online busy with the social media. Social media and online communication is believed to be having adverse effect on social skills and communication among adolescents. Long ago, the time when social media did not exist and social communication and interaction were the only way of communication. In the era of technology, social media interactions now dominates both online and offline conversations. In a society where interacting and over-sharing is the norm, you are probably more likely to speak to friends and family through electronic devices than face-to-face. Often at events or parties, guests are attached to their smart phones twitting or texting, but no one is truly engaging or interacting with the people around them. As more generations are born into the social age, social media will continue to be the favored communication form among young people. However, this shift may begin to affect their ability to properly communicate in person with peers. “Communication is constantly evolving, some people are used to seeing their friend's online avatar as if the face”. There is a greater desire to share with other people you barely know, than actually hanging out with friends and making memories. At the end of the day, nothing can replace face-to-face conversation and interaction. Despite the explosion of online endorsements and social media dialogue between individuals and brands, researchers have found word-of-mouth exchanges and in-depth conversations are still most influential. Whether or not people want to accept it, social media has several negative impacts on their daily lives. We cannot deny the fact that social platform is very helpful providing news, gossips, and to keep in touch with friends and family, but we cannot afford it to become the focal point of our lives. The access that people have on the internet and social media specifically has become too easy. It has made the language lazy and thus resulting people uninterested in meeting others in person, which eliminates any chance of deep and meaningful conversation. People have started losing their ability to communicate efficiently, which is a testament, to what kind of total control social media has over their lives. Overall, social media can be beneficial if used wisely and in the proper proportion. So, it is easy to conclude that the negative impact of social media far outweigh any benefits that they may provide to society at this juncture. T R

journalism. They make films every year and participate in competitions and of course win prizes. Their students have won international essay competitions. Communication, media and journalism deals with content. While operationally, mass media requires technology and commerce without doubt, the approach in the University of Mumbai is more on studies since the skill-set requirement is getting more and more massified as technology gets more and more accessible and cheap. What is required is an understanding, insight into content, its production and uses, the commercial uses, and the ethical pressures that comes with it. The pedagogy therefore focuses on the intelligence of the learner through immersion into ideas, concepts, and concerns. At the Department of Communications and Journalism, they understand and appreciate that technology is at the disposal of our will, intelligence and imagination, and we must learn to make it work for us. Future Opportunities for Students The opportunities for students range from being job seekers in a highly competitive market to becoming entrepreneurs in their own right and students in the department have been adept at all of these. The future lies in entrepreneurship and artisanal capitalism where mass media is concerned. T R

oday’s contemporary world is facing two challenges such as information and population ‘bursting’. These two terms has had a direct impact on the educational society. Given today's fast paced life, being educated in less time is the need of the hour for every person. Mass and media communication is the veracious platform to spread knowledge all over the world educating individuals. Both qualitative and quantitative improvements in the educational society can be brought into consideration with the help of mass media. Education now-a-days has acquired tremendous importance than ever before. The specific field for mass media has been created due to the explosive changes at the global level and the information level. But the modern education system demands to be very comprehensive. Mass media conveys information from various mediums such as TV, mobile, internet, radio, etc. As the information is exploding from all over the world, it needs to be transmitted all over the world.

Mass Media has the power to provide information to the mass within a fraction of a second. Communications are of two types; direct communication, which occurs face-to-face between two or more people standing or sitting together and the communication mediated by means of media such as Television, Radio, Magazines, Mobile, etc. is called as indirect or mediated communication. Hence, the information can be shared among a group of people and thus is called as mass communication. Education and mass media relate and influence each other relying on the communication between them. a change in the traditional education and shifting to a concrete education which will be formal and informal education. Mass media technologies in the education are radio, press, motion media, television, etc. They influence the attitude and the behavior of the students or customers directly and indirectly. Let us look at some of the mediums of mass communication that are helpful in spreading education: Radio is one of the most important media in our daily life which focuses on sound. The schools and colleges can have an educational program over the radio by means of which long discussions may take place between the teachers and the students regarding educational topics. Such radio is called as 'educational radio'. This is the best medium where an educational debate or discussions goes on for an elongated time and students can take advantage of the same. T H E

Television, one of the most popular medium of entertainment since years, has proven to be the best medium as it requires both 'listening and watching' function of the human body thus engaging them completely. Educational television is the audio-visual media for class instruction. There are programs on the television especially structured for the students. These programs aim at educating students on the moral values. The Press covers the printed matters such as books, newspapers, magazines or journals. Reading matters have highest potentiality. It acts on the intellectuality and emotions of the individuals in developing their philosophies of life. Newspapers widely contribute in the educational field and thus, readers get the information from different viewpoints. Newspaper publishes information about the geographical conditions, market conditions, current national and international affairs which are useful for the pupils to

build their knowledge upon. The motion pictures imply a great influence on the human mind. Educational films are coming forward to challenge the viable pictures and to complement them to explore new income for the educational purposes. These films makes concept more durable, clearer and more realistic. Motion pictures can bring the whole world into the classroom giving students a genuine approach towards a particular thing. The mass media information presented justly attracts the children or the youth and fuels them intellectually and effectively. Mass media focuses on the students in a very effective manner so as to form the necessary aptitude in the contemporary society because the information has to be presented correctly as family and schools have direct or indirect impact of media. Endorsing values as freedom, dignity, honor etc. have to be projected and stimulated in forfeiture of passivity in behavior and thinking, the exploration of superficiality, violence provocation or mass media excess that hints to dependence which brings stress, nervous system disturbances. It is always recommended for the families and teaching faculties to make the students see the brighter side of the media. Along with the formal education based on communication, the lifelong learning through the media can behave as a catalyst or inhibitor of information in a communication relationship between the presenter and the viewer. The responsibility of the quality of the music, to read appropriate books, to make a choice of the shows viewed, for practicing sports, also belongs to the parents and the teachers along with the media. Therefore, one can look for more advancement and improvisations in the mass media communication and it is interesting to see how mass media technology will bring more positive impact on the educational society.
