The 10 Best Online Institutes in Europe-2021

EDITOR’S NOTE

ONLINE EDUCATION – A RAGE AND A NEED

T

he way online education has evolved in most countries of the world is for everyone to see. Europe, however, needs a special mention since it caught up in a big way within a short span of time. The last decade has seen Europe take on the online education system and magically build the necessary infrastructure for it. Europe is also providing lot of funding to build up the online education system. Online education that was more prevalent in commercial institutes has now become an integral part of the mainstream education as well, particularly in higher education. Professionals or students who are unable or unwilling to attend classroom teaching benefit from such e-learning platforms that are affordable and easy and helps one brush up the skill sets. Europe has always been known as one of the choicest countries with great and varied opportunities for academics, for professional growth and for developing skills. The transition initially was, however, not easy as many misconceptions had to be dealt with. If learning in Europe sparks your interest and you are concerned about on-campus education, then online education is the best alternative – whether you are a professional or a student interested in European universities. Latest teaching methodologies with advanced technologies are used to disseminate information and teach lessons. Group discussions and online classes are conducted to guide students like in traditional classroom teaching.

So, last year when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world real hard, Europe that had already revolutionised its online education system did not panic when it came to impart education to its students. Given the current challenges that the education sector is facing like every other sector, online education seems to be the best solution. Besides, it is also affordable for higher education. Right from short term courses to degree programmes, European schools and colleges are providing online education to all those who want to learn.

Access to the Internet, the right technology and the skills to use the technology are the major factors that aid in successful online teaching and learning. Europe that had already advanced its digital infrastructure and most schools and households having access to the Internet, implementing e-learning was not difficult. But pandemic or no pandemic, online learning is here to stay big way though it may not replace on-campus learning. Though schools may go back to traditional teaching, hybrid learning is expected to continue for higher education.

Though distance learning is not likely to replace classroom learning completely, it is an easy and attractive option for many students and in the current situation, the only best available answer for the educator and the student.

We hand-picked few educational institutions that are doing remarkably well in imparting education through digital technologies, in the latest edition of The Knowledge Review – The 10 Best Online Institutes in Europe, 2021.

E-learning has been made available for students who can join the campus once the global public health situation improves.

Discover these institutes through this edition. Happy reading! T R

The concept of digital learning was not common before the pandemic and only few countries had it that too only for higher learning. The Covid crisis introduced digital learning for school education in most of the countries.

The overarching goal at BBIS is to help students become happy, well-rounded humans. A glorious 30-year-old history From humble beginnings to a leading school in Germany, BBIS has come a long way since 1990 when the school was conceptualised. It was on October 2 that year when the school’s application for a state registration was accepted. The first eight students were admitted on September 16, 1991 in the school then named the International School of Berlin-Potsdam, in a rented villa in Potsdam. Seven years later the number went to 100 which prompted the school to move to a new location. It also underwent a name change Berlin-Potsdam International School. With growing strength, it had to move again closer to Berlin. With the admission of 300 international students the school was renamed BBIS Berlin Brandenburg International School. The boarding school was included in the school campus. Mission Statement BBIS is a leading international school, inspiring students in pursuit of lifelong learning and excellence. We celebrate diversity in a caring, international-minded community. As an inclusive school we empower learners to fulfill their unique potential. We guide our students to become responsible, compassionate, global citizens. Values Pioneering Most of BBIS students will see the 22nd century - a journey which we have to equip them for. BBIS takes risks to replace the good with the better - ensuring that the students are challenged, pushed and supported to the edge of the next generation of learning!

and changes that occur. We support our three-year-olds to 19-year-olds with dedicated, caring professionals at every step of the way, 24/7 security and a strong child-protection policy makes BBIS safe in all respects. BBIS – the perfect choice BBIS is a leading IB World Day and Boarding School based in the capital region of Berlin. BBIS offers all four IB programmes to students from over 60 countries along with a huge range of extra-curricular activities. A warm and welcoming parent community, supportive Parent-TeacherAssociation bringing home and school closer together are other things that set the institute apart from others. Ratio of one teacher to seven students, highly-motivated international team of professionals, strong emphasis on overall development add to the uniqueness of BBIS. The lush green and quiet 360,000 sq m campus is located in Kleinmachnow, in a green wooded area on the southwest border of Berlin. The spacious buildings and classrooms provide the ideal atmosphere for an engaging school day. Classes are small, usually with fewer than 20 students, allowing the school to know each student well and address their individual needs. BBIS is within driving distance of Berlin city centre, and Potsdam, and is well connected by school buses and public transportation. Between March and June 2020 teaching and learning took place off campus due to the Coronavirus restrictions. The school also created a site which supported students and parents with essential information and helpful resources throughout these months.

Reflective We are fortunate to be surrounded by space and nature, we channel this luxury as a mindset - it allows us to grow. Our experience helps us to set the right pace for individual activities and simply give time for development. Excellent We pride ourselves on our commitment to excel both in and out of the classroom. Ensuring each student has the chance to fulfill their potential, irrespective of their talents or interests, we build confidence that fosters connections and community. Caring G rowing up is not easy, but we understand the challenges

DISTANCE LEARNING AND ITS

F

rom what started off as correspondence courses for students who were unable to attend college either due to financial conditions or because they were working and wanted to upgrade their skills or add to their qualifications, has today matured as distance learning. While many counties had introduced distance learning long before the third world or developing countries, most of the countries today have distance learning platforms. It all started off as correspondence courses in varied fields. Many students enrolled in these courses and encouraged by the response the concept of distance learning took shape as an offshoot of the parent concept of correspondence course. Many universities across the world, today, offer a myriad of opportunities in distance learning. The beginning was not easy, however, as the authenticity was doubted and rightly so with many private institutions offering short term courses, which were not always reliable.

FUTURE Only when universities, the education departments and other government affiliations came into the picture, these courses began to be recognised. Those were the times when distance education providers usually advertised about their courses through the print media or on the radio. The interested candidate corresponded on the address provided, got the form through postal department, filled the form, posted it back and got the admission. The fees were generally paid through demand draft or cheque. There were no bank transfers then, no online payment facilities. Study material was sent through book post and the student had to appear for the test in his/her own city in the presence of an authorised person, preferably a gazetted officer who signed on the answer sheets and gave a written testimonial of transparency. Flexible learning-systems, learn while you earn, and pocket-friendly fees prompt students to opt for distance learning. Distance learning or distance education January 2021 |

has lot of opportunities for the student to grow at the career front whether, or not, he/she is working. Advancements in technology have dramatically transformed the way distance education was being imparted. During the last decade or so distance learning has evolved and online or e-learning platforms became available for students since the recent past.

16 | www.theknowledgereview.com

FLEXI LEARNING Today, distance learning institutes are working relentlessly to bridge the gap between skills and knowledge, which will keep evolving. Even traditional distance learning institutions have adapted to technology to stay updated, for the convenience of students and to provide seamless learning experience. Browse through social media platforms, and advertisements of various short-term courses by reputed and lesser-known institutes/individuals pop up. And these courses have many takers. Couple of decades ago, this would not have been possible with their authenticity under scanner by people and authorities alike. But with the realisation of expanding knowledge base and augmenting skills for career growth, distance learning has assumed more importance now than ever. And its breed is growing in leaps and bounds by the year. So, if you have that learning bug buzzing constantly in your mind you need not worry. You have a variety of options at your disposal, serving your needs and satiating your thirst.

nce a student is out of the institution with a degree, it is expected that he/she would take on the professional world with all that is required to be industry ready. Adapting to the

ONLINE

EDUCATION Revolution

S

ince the coronavirus outbreak, online classes have become the defining feature of modern higher education. Although many universities, colleges or other institutions have completely transitioned to online learning, there are many instances where teachers are still struggling with ways to engage their students online. Before this obligatory transition, online courses came in many forms, from MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) to single modules, or full online bachelor's and master's degrees being offered online by universities.

NEW LEARNING SYSTEM

www.theknowledgereview.com |

25 | January 2021

Online learning facilitates the opportunities of higher education to deliver services for people continuing their education, to leverage technology to aid the teachers, and to use improved and updated pedagogies better suited to maintain student engagement. With its growth in popularity as well as accessibility, online education has been attracting students with its schedule-friendly format options. These formats are broadly classified into two categories: synchronous and asynchronous.

Some of the advantages of asynchronous learning are: Ÿ

Flexibility – Asynchronous learning are best suited for those who have demanding schedules, live weird hours, or just do not function with the same time restrains as the rest of the society. One can complete a learning module on the train-ride home, listen to a lecture while babysitting, take a pop-quiz over brunch.

Ÿ

Pacing – With asynchronous learning, you set the pace. You can read and revise materials as much as you want, completing them according to your grasping ability rather than on when lecture time ends. Quick learners can power through units and materials that come easy. Whereas, if you take longer to absorb information, you have the freedom to take notes, practice retention without having to worry about falling behind your classmates.

Ÿ

Affordability – When it comes to affordability, fully asynchronous programs are one of the best options. MOOCs are often inexpensive because they do not require daily attention from instructors or administrators. Self-guided modules, video tutorials, and virtual libraries all offer you the chance to pursue your education with minimal oversight and expense.

Asynchronous and Synchronous Learning Synchronous learning is online learning which is in-sync with real time, which takes place in real time. These often come with a set class schedule and required login times. You, your classmates and your instructor interact in a specific virtual place. Videoconferencing, teleconferencing, live chats, and live-streamed lectures are some of the common practices in synchronous learning. Some of the advantages of synchronous learning are: Ÿ

Classroom engagement – With active discussion, immediate feedback, and personal interaction with peers and educators, online learning can offer much of the personal engagement available in a classroom, while also allowing you the comforts of home and no time wasted commuting.

Ÿ

Dynamic learning – Synchronous online learning offers speed and immediacy. Videoconferencing makes it possible to ask peers and TAs questions and receive answers mid-lesson. And not being bound by a lecture hall means you can do your own research on the side without disrupting the class.

Ÿ

Instructional depth – With synchronous learning, you interact regularly with your instructors. This provides regular opportunities for face-to-face discussion, individual guidance, and mentorship without having to schedule individual appointments.

Asynchronous learning is online education that does not necessitate real-time interaction. Instead, content is available online for students to access at all times, so they learn whenever it best suits their schedule, yet assignments and submissions do have deadlines. Common methods of asynchronous online learning are self-determined lesson modules, pre-recorded video content, virtual libraries, lecture notes, also online discussion boards.

January 2021 |

Programs can also use a hybrid learning model, which includes a blend of both synchronous and asynchronous formats. That is the coolest feature of online learning – you do not have to choose just one way of doing it. Many online college courses use a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning, combining self-paced assignments with real-time conferencing; or juggling pre-taped lectures with live discussion sessions. The paths of learning may vary, but the end goal is always the same – to become a more fulfilled individual proficient in the right competencies and equipped with the right knowledge. A new generation of autodidacts emerge with the resources and abilities to conquer their fields, all with the help of online learning. And they are just getting started. It is an exciting time to be alive. An exciting time to learn! - Aditya Umale
