Technological Advancements Refurbishing Education in India
We can witness modern gizmos making their way into classrooms these days. Various educational institutions are using cutting-edge technology to display images and videos to the learners. Many students and teachers are using internet as a medium to gather information related to the subject matter at any time and from any place of their choice. In addition, teachers are preparing interesting and engaging study materials for the students, which include videos, multimedia presentations, and power point slides. This has made the educational process better and more interesting than ever. As a result, students get attracted towards studies and actively participate in classroom tasks and homework. Latest technology provides institutions the scope of conducting real-time activities like video conferences, live classes, and so on. Moreover, many engineering and medical institutions are employing robots, AI, and VR tools to provide students an extensive and lasting educational experience. Teachers are assigning projects to the students, which they have to complete by using the internet and other associated technologies like mobile and computer applications. With incorporation of modern technology, educational institutions are honing students’ skills and preparing them for stiff competition of this constantly evolving world. T R

very parent is concerned about their child’s study and wants them to concentrate completely without any distractions. They often find it challenging to make their children sit at one place, focus on their homework, and complete it without too much distraction. It is a known fact that children are enthusiastic, curious, and energetic, and it is difficult for them to focus completely and concentrate on their studies without getting distracted at all. Understanding Children is very Important
Vital Techniques
to Enhance
Concentration among Children
26
In order to solve the above mentioned issue, parents can employ various strategies to help understand children’s needs and requirements, and take necessary steps accordingly. We all should know that it is possible for a child to concentrate on a task for a longer period of time. Children are naturally curious and are very energetic. They have a creative and playful mind. Children face concentration issues because they have a different mindset as compared to adults. Their thought processes, opinions, outlook, and mindset are completely different than adults. Many children have short attention spans. Sometimes they find that the task assigned to them isn't interesting. As a result, they get bored and instantly shift their attention to something more

interesting. Adults complete their tasks responsibly; but children want their assigned task to be interesting and engaging. Otherwise, they lose interest in completing the required assignment.
This also helps children to keep an account of how much work is left and assists them in proper management of time, which, in turn, helps them to increase focus and attention. A Nutritious Diet of Green and Healthy Food
Techniques to Improve a Child’s Attention Psychologists state that there are many techniques that can be employed to improve a child’s attention span, focus, and concentration. Employing these strategies, parents can properly deal with their children’s concentration problems. Some techniques that can be used to enhance a child’s attention can include the following:
A healthy diet is very important for good concentration. Eating healthy food can help children in concentrating well on their studies. There are various food products which enhance concentration like almonds, eggs, and lean meat. Experts say that children’s diet should include green leafy vegetables and fruits which provide a proper dose of antioxidants that, in turn, boost brain power. Proper Routine
Focus Games and Attention-Building Exercises Children learn more by playing, and games can be used for building concentration. Adding fun activities into the daily curriculum will help them to concentrate more in studies. Also, providing children the scope to learn by using regular toys and activities that improve attention and concentration can be an innovative step. Studies suggest that gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, and so on reduce attention span and memory of children. Teachers and parents can replace these gadgets and implement innovative techniques like thinking games, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, card games, and picture puzzles to boost their creativity and reasoning. Moreover, parents can employ sequencing activities like arranging things in alphabetical order, following recipes, and so on for the children who find it difficult concentrating. Creating an Environment devoid of Distractions A soothing and calming environment helps some children to concentrate, while for others, it takes just the opposite - an environment full of hustle and bustle. Understanding the kind of environment a child prefers for studying, can help a lot in increasing their concentration. Parents can use soft instrumental music and soft lighting to create an ambience and set the mood of study. Gadgets like mobiles, tablets, and laptops should be kept out of the children’s reach to avoid distractions. If one needs computers for studying, parents should make sure that it is used only for studies and not for the purpose of entertainment. All study-related materials like books, notebooks, pencils, and so on should be available to the children so that they don’t need to get up to get anything.

If students are provided with a proper routine to follow, they get used to a study schedule. It not only creates a positive impact on their studies, but also regulates their day-to-day activities. Moreover, a proper routine helps in time management and also helps the students to prepare themselves mentally when it’s the time to study. This eventually helps children to concentrate on studies. Naps and Study Breaks If a child is given adequate time for naps and breaks, it refreshes their mind and boosts concentration. A good night’s rest helps children to focus well on studies. Parents can also let their children take a power nap of twenty minutes after school. This would assist in enhancing their concentration in studies. Parents should make sure that all bathroom breaks, short snacks, and other things have been taken care of before children begin their studies, as these may interfere with concentration. A Motivating Reward System Parents can motivate their students to study by providing small rewards which doesn’t necessarily have to be chocolates or toys. Parents can praise their children for performing well and for studying further. Concentration is a very important factor when it comes to education of children. For better results, concentration needs to be improved and made automatic. In order to do that, both parents and students have to make dedicated and consistent efforts. The mentioned techniques can work wonders and play an essential part in boosting concentration among students. T R

ducation is what remains after one has forgotten what one learned in the school.” Albert Einstein. The word ‘Education comes from Latin word ‘Educere’ which means, ‘to lead out’. But over the years it is tragic to see that hardly people go through the grind of education in the institutes to bring out the best in them. Most of the approach today is to just get a degree that will be an entry door to get a job in the market. To describe today’s education system, it is apt to say, ‘Man is made for the paper not the paper for man’ If I have my credentials written on a paper (a degree, diploma etc) then people trust the paper more than the person!
“Education is the manifestation of the perfection already present in a human” Swami Vivekanand. Naturally everyone is born for greatness, formal education should be at the service of humanity to bring out the best in the person as Swami Vivekanandji observed. All the tools, infrastructure and environment of an educational institute should be channelized towards this purpose and then we will have better society, nation, and world. Not that Education is a panacea for all ills of the society. But as Victor Hugo observed, “He who opens a schools closes a prison”, indeed the right kind of education will help alleviate many of the ills that are troubling our society today. Indeed we will read less news like a PhD holder turned as fanatic religious zealot and goes on a killing spree. It is here that the importance of ‘Self Education’ comes over Formal Education. “Formal Education will make you a living, Self Education will make you a fortune”, observed Jim Rohn. One cannot argue with the brilliant statement. If all the means utilized by the Education system fail to make us more humane indeed the purpose of Education fails. So how do we Self Educate ourselves? No can undermine the importance of books here. Good books, literature enlighten the soul. If we are really serious, we will come out to be very different person after we have been through the book then when we started. T.S Eliot said, “We shall not cease from exploration and the end of our exploration is to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.” Also one has to be good observer of life, people around. When we shut our mouth and listen we learn, when we speak many times we rather show our

ignorance! Observation of the changing trends, how people react to situations, how leaderships fail or work all are vital to educate us and one should be a good observer. We also learn from our experiences. When we succeed we celebrate but do not learn. Many times it puffs us. But if we take failures in the right spirit, we can learn, adapt, change and get better. That’s what the Deming’s PDCA cycle is all about. The practice of Zen in the Japanese industries made them the foremost challengers in the industrial world. How did they do it? Well they were all self learners over formal learners. Conclusion: I do not intend to demean Formal education and getting degree. But my attempt in this article to create shift in paradigm about how we approach education. If we approach formal education in the right spirit, it will surely transform us. But in the din of today’s commercialization, globalization information is mistaken to be education. My humble attempt is to help us all be aware of the real purpose of education and let it transform us to be better human beings. Let me end with this quote, “Change is the end result of all true learning.” T R

parents and homes for a day or even more than that. Children can feel homesick even when they go to their friend’s place for a single night’s sleep over. It is often seen that children feel more homesick when they return to school after vacations, breaks, and missed days due to illness. They also feel homesick when they leave home for a long time, for example, joining school at the beginning of the year or when they are leaving home for a longer period of time than they are used to. The concerned authorities and the teachers of an institution should observe the students to detect signs of homesickness. They should counsel and help students in tackling the problem. Research states that homesickness can manifest in children in many different forms including nausea, headache, or children may also respond through change in behavior like fear, tantrums, and so on. Students who are homesick or anxious about separation from their parents often express unnecessary concern and fear about their parents. Sometimes they find it difficult to sleep and some children are very shy to interact with others. These signs can assist teachers to recognize which students can tend to feel homesick and need help. Role of Teachers Teachers can help homesick children in many different ways. If a student cries, feels sick, scared, or distant, teachers and counselors can take necessary actions to help them. Teachers can notify parents about their ward’s homesickness so that they can work together and find a solution. Teachers can also act on their own and try to distract a student by conducting

will be able to overcome homesickness.
Students should be brought into the comfort zone by providing toys and similar items so that they learn things in an interesting and playful manner. It may so happen that some students may quickly respond in a positive way while others may take time to adapt to the developments. Also, these days many mobile applications have also come up which can help students to become more comfortable in the class room.
Parents and teachers can discuss with the students about potential anxiety. Eventually, they can come up with a fool-proof plan in case the students get homesick. Healthy, limited, and appropriate contact between parents and children during school hours can also turn out to be healthy.
Working as a Team Teachers and parents can work together to solve the problem of students’ homesickness. They can interact and have discussions with the children in the classroom, the school premises, and at home. At home, parents can teach and paint a clear picture of an ideal school to their children. They can prepare their wards mentally for school giving them an idea of the activities that are usually carried out in school. This will make children familiar to school; also when they leave their children at school, they should remain calm, happy, and confident. This will build their ward’s confidence and reduce their anxiety. Parents can comfort their children by preparing them a healthy and tasty breakfast along with a nutritious packed lunch for school. To further comfort the young students, parents and teachers can work together and arrange a meeting in the school before the child’s first day. This will allow the student to see the classroom, meet the teacher, and be familiar with the institute’s ambience. Once acquainted with the school, students
Facing the Challenges Many experts state that homesickness can be dealt with by changing the perception of what the feeling is. Psychologists state that people don’t stop missing whom they love. Hence, if students are trained to consider homesickness as a feeling of affection versus pain, their negative feelings about school can be turned into positive ones. Also, renowned healthcare institutes suggest parents to consult mental health professionals if the fear of school or homesickness persists among their children. Sometimes it may so happen that even parents start missing their children if they start leaving for long periods of time. In such cases, parents should also take the same steps that children follow to feel better in school. Parents can engage in errands and recreational activities to reduce symptoms of missing a child. Parents should motivate children to go to school regularly and should constantly interact with them. This will build the children’s confidence and will help them perform well at school and improve in their studies. Comforting and encouraging children will help them overcome homesickness and perform actively in school activities. T R

ith the advancements we are seeing in the world today, the traditional methods of education are going to fall redundant in the coming years. Technological developments are such, that businesses are compelled to review their products, processes, organisation structures, and the role of human resource with much more scrutiny over the past half-a-decade than ever before. To understand the role of technology in jobs and the impact on students, we must first acknowledge that we are most likely witnessing what many call the “The Fourth Revolution”. What this means is that if history and recent research on AI, automation, Data Science and so on are any indicative of what is to become of the work scenario in next couple of decades, technology is likely to create more jobs than take away. It is like a report commissioned by Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s, which said “technology destroys jobs, but not work”. It is imperative to, therefore, think about the skillset shift required by industries and economies, and train our students accordingly. More than 50% of all extant occupations will not exist 10 years from now and most employers have moved in that direction already. Units are becoming more disparate and globalization has been concomitant with many collaboration challenges. These changes demand more communication, more innovative, cognitive, flexible working plans, and analytical skills than straightforward core domain specialization. For this, we need to change the experience in our classrooms and the way we teach. Having been exposed to technology and online social resources at an early age, the students today wish to challenge the established education system’s emphasis on acquisition of
knowledge and classroom attendance. Information is at their fingertips and they look for classrooms with dialogue and perspectives, not “lectures” and rote learning. Being able to raise questions and learn at one’s convenience and pace is very important for them, as their values disrupt set patterns of information dissemination. Teachers, today, are struggling to keep the curiosity of learners piqued and keep them interested. They need to encourage students to have self-awareness, ask questions, think from many perspectives, practice, and apply what they study, understand the needs of the world of work and business. Teachers have the responsibility to ensure that their students have more skills such as problem-solving, communication, creativity and so on, than are required just to pass assessments and obtain shallow certificates. Innovation is achieved when educators step outside the boxes and grids that categorize students via numbers. When new and unique ideas crop up as an answer to a mundane challenge, the goals of education will have been well met. It is important that our educators prepare our students for the upcoming changes in the workplace and the workforce than create more ambiguity and doubts in their minds. Like Jack Ma says in a recent World Economic Forum meet “we have to teach our kids something unique, so that the machine cannot catch up with us.” It is time we build experiences. T R

Late Shri Hashu Advani founded Vivekanand Education Society in 1959 with ten members who shared with him a similar dream of seless service to the motherland by providing value based education. The members of VES were neither trained educationalists nor were rich persons who could afford the costs associated with building an educational institution. They did not inherit anything from their forefathers –neither big properties nor name and fame. Their beginning was very humble. All of them got together and pooled a fund of Rs. 30000/(Rupees thirty thousand) to purchase a small barrack where 256 students started studying in six classrooms. Thus the long cherished dream of a school became a reality in 1962.

‘MEMORY’ WITH THE Of

MNEMONICS, NUTRITIOUS DIET& RIGOROUS
Physical exercises reduce insulin resistance; reduce inammations, which affect the health of brain cells, and the development of new blood vessels in the brain. Moreover, hitting the gym improves mood and sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety which ultimately increase concentration and improves memory.
HIT THE GYM
emory plays an important role in humans’ life. It enables us to remember skills that we have learned, retrieve information at the time of need. But not always we remember the entire vital thing that we should remember. As far as students are concerned, many nd it challenging to remember their important lessons for long. Therefore, to throw some light on improving the memory we have come up with an interesting research.
Physical exercises not only have a positive assist in ghting heart disease, stroke, and diabetes but moreover it improves memory and thinking skills. In a prominent research it is found that consistent aerobic exercise increase the size of the hippocampus, a critical brain region that involved in shaping verbal memory and learning. While doing intense exercise, a chemical known as norepinephrine, which has a strong inuence on memory generate in the body and assist in sharpening the memory. Researchers believe that rigorous exercise can increase your brain size, and the bigger your brain, the greater your capacity to remember.
Every day we feed tons of information to our brain and right one stays but many time we forget the vital information as well. To avoid such thing it is important to nourish brain with right food, exercise and tools that has the potential to boost the memory. Ultimately, it is our life and we have to take the corrective actions to make our brain cells work better.

Brain Training
In the modern times, plethora of information which we need to remember is available in the forms of ‘words’. While ‘words’ printed on a page is a classy medium for conveying complex thoughts but our brain does not easily absorb and remember written information for long. Our brain is programmed by nature to keep track of information that are available in the form of images, colors, structures, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, positions, emotions and language. Information in these forms is always absorbed in human brain for long as compared to information available in ‘words’. Mnemonics are thus a powerful medium to remember information for long and in a lucid manner.
There are many types of mnemonics, but which one is the best entirely depends on the imaginative capability each individual learner. Mnemonics based on the usage of Music, Note Organization, Image, Connection, Spelling, Name, Expression/Word, Model, and Ode/Rhyme are among the popular ones. How mnemonics help in remembering anything better? In a name mnemonic, the rst letter of each word in a sentence or any other list of items can be remembered using acronym like: ROY G. BIV = colors of the spectrum (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.)
EFFECT OF MNEMONICS
Mnemonics assist humans in remembering information, especially in the form of lists like phases, characteristics, stages, parts, steps and more. It is a tool that is designed to help student improve their memory and store critical information for longer duration. This method connects new learning to prior knowledge through the use of visual and acoustic cues.
These mnemonic devices are good for memory and in 1967, Notable Author, Gerald R. Miller has proved this thing right. In his research he found that, students who used mnemonics tools regularly increased their test score up to 77% as compared to other students who did not use mnemonic.

Everyone likes mouth-watering food and even die for eating such stuff. But the proverb-“All that glitter is not a real gold” holds true in eatables as well. There are foods that are good and others that do harm to your health. Therefore, we have written about some foods that not only boost memory but also increase the functioning of brain. Blueberry, a rich source of ber, potassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B6, antioxidants and phytonutrient is also known as a super food that has the potential to improve learning, thinking and memory capacity. Along with this, it assists in reducing neurodegenerative oxidative stress. This super food is also relatively low in fructose as compared with other fruits, and thus makes it one of the healthiest fruits amongst others. Walnuts are lled with omega-3 fats, natural phytosterols and antioxidants, these contents improves brain function and even promote brain healing. Phytosterols ability to lower the cholesterol level also assists in maintaining a healthy heart. Curry contains turmeric, a spice that in turn contains the anti-inammatory antioxidant curcumin. This oxidant boosts memory and stimulates the production of new brain cells.
EAT RIGHT
Broccoli and cauliower contain choline, a vitamin B, which plays a vital role in brain development. Choline intake charges brain functioning and it boosts cognitive capability; improve learning and ultimately enhance memory. Crab and Red meat are an excellent source of brain-boosting vitamin B12 which can assist in improving memory. Garbanzo beans are a good source of magnesium which benets brain cell receptors to speed the transmission of messages. It also relaxes blood vessels, which allows more blood to ow towards the brain that ultimately boosts memory. Green leafy vegetables also produce the same effects as garbanzo beans and are equally popular. Although the list is endless, but including these stuffs in the food platter can do miracle as far as memory is concerned.
