‘‘ Is India the Next Architectural Hub of the World?

W

hile talking about architecture, the more we speak, the less it appears. A renowned American Entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker Jim Rohn once said, “Whatever good things we build end up building us.” Supporting to this statement, another statement that can be quoted to define architecture is something that is said by a popular American Architect Julia Morgan, “Architecture is a visual art and the buildings speak for themselves.”

Not just from today, India is a land of marvelous buildings and mindblowing architectures, and that can be traced to the time when humans started settling or even the times when primitive humans began looking for a shelter in their initial stages. From the cave paintings to Taj Mahal, India offers itself as a land of art and design. Residing in a country like this provides the younger generation to explore art, design, architecture and even archaeology in a level beyond imagination. Architecture in India is not just art anymore, and it's much beyond that. It's the gateway for better, more accessible and more comfortable living solutions. Even in this stiff competition, Indian architects are redefining designs and creating new landmarks in the world of architecture. These professionals are coming up with extraordinary ideas and innovative designs to make a living more meaningful. There are numerous Indian architects whom the growing and aspiring architect admires and one such person is Balkrishna Doshi, who has been recently awarded the 2018 Pritzker-Prize, architecture's highest honor. He is also known as the pioneer of low-cost affordable housing and even the first laureate from India. With such esteem coming to the land of art and culture, it no more remains a question; rather, it gets assured that India is the next futuristic hub of architecture. T R

D

esign is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs, a renowned Tech-entrepreneur.

Buildings, the most important substance in today’s life, are the places where we spend the most of our time. May it be our homes, educational institutions or offices; it's the structure of bricks and mortar, which gives us shelter for our entire lifetime. Whatever may the building be, the most critical thing about it is its design. Design is the thing which decides everything from the foundation of the building to the structure of its windows. Architectures are those people who decide what the structure of a building should be, and it’s the design of the building which instructs how a building should look like. It also rules the most crucial factors which make a building strong enough to withstand any circumstance from sun heat, rain, breeze or natural calamities like flood, earthquake or tornado. It is because of the architectures, the engineers and hufor ndreds of other skilled and non-skilled workers because of whom we have a peaceful sleep in the night or sit calmly in a lecture hall, even on a hot summer day, freezing winter night or a rainy afternoon. Design is the thing which differentiates one from “Just a building” to “Wow! What a wonderful building”. Architecture is the only scope where even humans can create the greatest wonders of the world and the most popular examples to support this statement are Taj Mahal in India, Colosseum in Italy, Pyramids in Egypt, Chichen Itza in Mexico, and Great Wall of China among many others. Behind every great architect, lie their extraordinary sense of aesthetics, knowledge about art and design, geometric sense, and huge practical experience. To bring forward such institutes which are instilling creativity, enhancing knowledge and helping students create milestones of the level-next, we have come up with the issue “The 10 Most Innovative Institutes for Architecture in 2018”. In the Cover of the edition, we have Chitkara School of Planning and Architecture, a constituent of Chitkara University Punjab. Located on the lines of Chandigarh – Patiala National Highway, the University is known for its commitment to excellence and its vibrant academic environment with a distinguished faculty, brilliant students and proactive collaboration with industry. Hope this edition will create a mark on your mind. T R

As a faculty I am trying to impart the same values now to my students.” Mr. Rishabh Gandhi, an alumnus of Batch 2009 “I am a proud alumna of CSPA. All the teachers at CSPA have always been a support throughout my journey from being a clueless young student to an individual having my own identity. ach new situation requires a new architecture.” – quoted by Jean Nouvel, a famous French Architect. The quote perfectly fits in the modern architectural world where architects need to provide unique architectural solutions to particular sets of circumstances by creating something new, using unique shape, color, size and technologies with limited natural resources. The modern architects are facing huge number of challenges with the rapidly changing world.

According to United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. The world population is rising and the average life expectancy of the population is also increasing simultaneously. The world is going to become a more crowded place in the future. With these challenges, the architects have to design buildings in such a way that they can maintain the level of sustainability in the world. Good Things Come In Small Packages There are various reasons for the trends of a smaller home. To maintain the sustainability, limited land availability and high density of population lead to design smaller buildings. Apart from that, now people prefer a small house with smaller mortgage, i.e., affordable houses. Architects have to design homes that are smaller and more eco-friendly. The small homes consume less energy and produce less wastage, which is ultimately beneficial for current environment of the world. Emerging Sustainable Green Architecture Technologies To slow down the consumption of the scarce natural resources of the world and to reduce the pollution level, architects are embracing the green architecture technologies like solar power, green building or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) buildings, turbine power and more. The green architecture involves an energy efficient design to reduce negative environmental impacts and material selected contains recycled yet durable content. It also includes protection and conservation of water throughout the life of a building by rainwater harvesting and reusing water. Green roofs and green walls can be used to design an eco-friendly building.

3D Printing of the House and Indoor Design 3D printing can be a potential architectural solution for affordable and rapid houses. As per the recent testing by architects, 3D printing has been used to create an entire house in 24 hours. The walls can be created with the printer and windows and the roof can be added with conventional construction methods. In fact, interior decorators can design the interior of buildings by 3D printers. This technology can be considered as the future of affordable houses and solutions to solve housing shortages. The Concept of Floating City The global sea level is rising due to the sudden change in the climate, and availability of land for building houses is gradually decreasing. The futuristic floating city concept will help the human population to live on a self-sustainable floating island. The Lilypad Project with the concept of creating floating self-sufficient ocean-going eco-city islands that would accommodate up to 50,000, and would use the renewable energy technologies, including solar, thermal, wind, to produce more energy. Innovative Architecture Can Change the World The world has exceptional architectural designs ranging from Burj Khalifa to Gardens by the Bay, The Empire State Building to The Opera House and many more which can be considered as the masterpiece designs. There are many amazing green architectural projects in the world, like floating self-sufficient ocean-going eco-city islands, a windpowered design that helps to generate more power, and solar towers that generate powers from sun’s ray; such contemporary concepts of designs can help to maintain the sustainability. The Bahrain World Trade Center is the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design. It is the largest wind powered design and an example of the growing world trend in sustainable architecture. Dongtan Eco-City is world’s first environmentally, socially, economically, and culturally sustainable city. The city relies on its own wind and solar energy and emission free public transportation. The new and innovative concepts are used by modern architects to make the world sustainable. The architecture can create better places and can positively affect the society with creative designs. Several studies have proven that the design of the building can affect the human behavior and creativity. The architect can shape the building and can shape the mood of the people residing with it as well; they can change the quality of life and bring positive social changes by innovative designs. The sustainable architecture can help to reduce the negative environmental impact and create an eco-friendly environment. Global warming is polluting water, air and natural resources; in such a scenario, an architect can design green and ecological buildings to sustain the environment. The limited natural resource is a challenge for this industry but with the help of advanced technologies the architects can design affordable small houses and new wonders can be made every day. T R

rchitecture – what better way to express our ideas and thoughts through a meaningful display of structures that dwell in their own glory? I remember the painting by Anselm Kiefer (1981) which depicts the so-called Mosaic Hall of the New Reich Chancellery, the largest completed project in Berlin by Adolf Hitler’s architect, Albert Speer, and one of the few realizations of Hitler’s plan to rebuild Berlin as the world capital, Germania. Although demolished after the war, having been badly damaged in the Battle of Berlin in 1945, Kiefer has painted the room as a ruin as if it had survived, reminding us of the temporary power of Reich, its pompous aspirations for domination and permanence and the ambiguous role of architecture as propaganda and testament.

through these sheets. We also strongly believe in developing the interpersonal skills of each and every one of the student to ensure they are ready to step into the professional field after their graduation.

Architecture has grown leaps and bounds within our country and globally as well. Gone are the days when the clients were clinging on to the local consultants to design a villa or an apartment; gone are the days when domestic brands were portraying their monopoly; gone are the days where one-consultant-does-everything. In the aftermath of globalization and signing of GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) in 1947, every trade has had been promoted internationally including the practice of architecture. Hilary French, Professor of Design at Bath School of Art and Design, London rightly says, At SVS School of Architecture, we insist the same from the “Architecture is not considered as self-sufficient profession students, not just art and painting of the visualized anymore but a multidisciplinary, multi-skilled and architectural design. But more importantly, we give multidirectional profession”. The students of architecture do emphasis on the way the drawings are prepared; the way the not study just architecture and arts but their focus is more detailing is done; the way the drawings become more into diverse fields of engineering, sociology, business and representational; and the way in which true economics etc so as to become a multi-disciplined, multiarchitecture can be viewed in its fullest glory skilled and multidirectional professionals. The academic curriculum of our school at SVS sets the focus right for the students – Building Systems [Mechanical Engineering], Structure & Materials [Civil Engineering], Design Methods Dr Champa H S completed her B.Arch from University & Practice [Business & Economics], Urban Design Visveswaraya college of Engineering, Bangalore. One major problem that the enterprising students of architecture face during their course of study is the inability to relate structural design to their architectural design. Although, in architectural design studio, there is a need to enable maximum creativity through the knowledge of all disciplines involved, there has always been an apparent separation between design studio and structure courses and a lack of time to teach statically undefined structural systems that are more complex than simple beams and columns. To bridge this gap, we at SVS SOA adopt a “transdisciplinary 29

Educator's Viewpoint

approach” to architectural design studios, where design studio, structures courses and theory are brought under one umbrella and not as isolated disciplines. By doing this, we have been able to enhance learner participation and creation of new knowledge among the students. This also generates a unity of intellectual frameworks beyond the interdisciplinary perspectives. The Result? The students become knowledge producer and the teacher becomes an interactive learning designer. In our technological age, when so many of us are on the social networking sites, and many of these experiences are predominantly virtual, the role architecture can play in the experience of real time situations is increasingly curious. I would personally like to explain this by taking an example of a Cancer Care Center. These buildings must carry a weight of seriousness due to the circumstances of the people who arrive in there to be treated; the spaces treating their anxiety, their emotions, and their psychological and physiological well-being. At the same time, the architect should also balance this seriousness through provision of social, spiritual and emotional needs as part of his/her design thinking. Creating a five-sense space within the cancer care center can be one such option. Making the patients walk through different tactile surfaces can be another option. Adding up social spaces like library or spiritual centers will go a long way in healing them and keeping them at peace. “The noblest architecture can sometimes do less for us than a siesta or an aspirin. Even if we could spend the rest of our lives in the Villa Rotunda or the Glass House, we would still often be in a bad mood”, points out Alain de Botton in ‘The Architecture of Happiness’. The societal and contextual consciousness and analysis that are inculcated within the minds of the students through appropriate studies and interaction enable them to produce better architectural designs. We are living in a homogenized environment. In the name of “adaptive reuse”, train stations have become shopping malls, shopping malls have become town squares, churches have become pubs and crèches, schools have become community centers, homes have become offices and universities are moving online. Aesthetics have been stretched to encapsulate so many uses that we find it hard to distinguish one building’s use from its neighbor’s. We have deviated from appreciating the architecture of a building to notice only when the buildings are exceptionally big, exceptionally ugly or exceptionally beautiful. Architecture faces many challenges in the future. Though technology is there to offer endless opportunities, we need to understand how architecture affects us. What types of buildings and spaces do we need in the future? How do we deal with interior spaces that offer endless change? What will be the role of architecture? Buildings change over time and so do out attitudes towards them. To annotate this, think about a hospital. A hospital once used to be a familiar piece of urban infrastructure exuding both civic and spiritual meaning is now an industrial megastructure that lack atmosphere and emotion. Architectural education should be focusing on the aforesaid concepts as well. Architectural Critique can be one of the courses where the students critically analyze their peers’ design and transfer knowledge which in turn helps everyone to appreciate the architecture of the building. The students are also needed to introspect themselves and start learning to develop a meaningful conversation with their design thinking process [you read it right – conversation with their design thinking process]. Consciousness about society and the scale of impact of their design on the society should be explored at every stage of the design process through meaningful iterations and feasible design rationale. This helps in creating architectural emotion and further changes the way we experience spaces. T R

Twin City C

ities are growing and becoming denser day by day, in that it’s being difficult to avail resources to a better livelihood. This is because the rate of migration from rural to urban areas is increasing across the world. By 2050, around 70% of the people will be living in cities and India is no exception in this regard. So there is emerging need for cities to get smarter in India. Cities must be smart enough to manage the resources.

We bring leverage technology to remodel the city across several limitations as we cannot change the entire city but we can the way we use the city. Smart City stands to leverage technology to serve people, it applies to several sectors of development basically depending on the level of development, willingness to change and reform, resources, and aspirations of the city. A digital city model of the existing city can be used as a better way to analyze the city for its best uses. We can actually feel the city with a virtual tour and identify the problems and solution for it. In our case study, we have used 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to design the city with the help of available open sources satellite data such as SRTM, Google, and OpenStreetMap.

definition of a smart city, it varies from city to city and country to country. Therefore, a city has to be designed to optimize resources and to promote sound sustainable development. The first step comes to the planning of smart city is infrastructure. An infrastructure which has the capacity to accommodate an exceeding number of people, which transforms the movement of traffic rapidly, which allows industries for better production and where citizen communicates actively, which improves the quality of life through experiences to use the city. This document state the art of utilization of 3D model city across multiple domains. This will also facilitate several external sources which are useful in making a Digital Twin City. To better plan for the future, we need to rethink how we can imagine, plan, design, analyze, simulate, build and manage the city. India needs to improve elementary education to move ahead in the digital era. 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

Introduction: To provide the aspirations and needs of the citizens, urban planners ideally aim at developing the entire urban ecosystem, which is represented by the four pillars of comprehensive development-institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure. This can be a long-term goal and cities can work towards developing such comprehensive infrastructure incrementally, adding on layers of ‘smartness’. Smart Urban Planning CATIA civil module is a complete solution to all types of civil design, a small training required for the user to be familiar with the several apps such as terrain preparation, building space planning, civil 3D design, and CATIA civil engineering. With the terrain preparation map facilitate terrain design, we can actually differentiate different elevation. Also, we can define the contour lines for the selected area. It also facilitates to mess the terrain so that buildings and existing structure can be placed in the geolocated place. The dashboard contains a list of tasks, apps 3D Search and 6WTags, Me Menu, New Menu, Share Menu and home Home Menue.

3D Experience Platform Dashboard Terrain Preparation: Adequate terrain administration is in general interest of the society, and it is also significant from viewpoint of clients who invest in construction. In most of the countries, particularly those in transition, investors wishing to invest into construction often face a series of difficulties and problems during the process of acquiring all required grants and construction permits. There are several kinds of data which can be used as input to terrain preparation apps, such as SRTM, LiDAR, and DEM. Open source data SRTM which have 30m of resolution mostly used. The stand rudd SRTM data format is .hgt which is considered as raw SRTM data. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is an international research effort that obtained digital elevation models on a near-global scale from 56° S to 60° N, to generate the most complete high-resolution digital topographic database of Earth prior to the release of the ASTER GDEM in 2009. The downloaded data from earth explorer can be imported into the software through CATIA terrain preparation app which facilitates terrain modeling, study area can be selected and projected from the large terrain. After meshing, the terrain a contour can be prepared with fixed elevation differences.

Contour Showing Elevation Differences OpenStreetMap(OSM) is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. The creation and growth of OSM have been motivated by restrictions on use or availability of map information across much of the world, and the advent of inexpensive portable satellite navigation devices. OSM is considered a prominent example of volunteered geographic information. OSM map can be directly imported into the Building space planning app, for the most of the reason map have 3D information such as the height of the building so while importing a selection of 3D can be made by checking import 3D option in the toolbox. Sometimes OSM does not have height information so in this case, we can get the 2D layout of all the existing structure. The 2D layout can be modified to 3D in the Building Space planning app.

OSM Data Creation Imported 3D buildings from OSM are a box-like structure which can be converted into building with the predefine0d story. The imported line can be converted into roads, Generative Shape Development App facilitate key tools to design road. Before that, it is important to gather information about existing road such as the width of the road, no of lane, shoulders, parking e.t.c. Most of the information can be stored from google earth view also, satellite top view footage can be directly applied to the texture of the terrain to bring the realistic view to the project. Given picture describe imported 3D OSM building.

CATIA Building Space Planning App: After terrain modeling, CATIA building planning application is being used for the geolocation of existing building from OpenStreetMap (OSM). CATIA building planning app facilitates multi-story building designs with faster and easy way as per architecture oriented. Boxes can be converted into buildings and geolocated with the respective place. CATIA live rendering app facilitates material analysis, it allows the user to apply the material to the structure for analysis purpose. It also allows the user to apply a texture to the buildings which result in realistic view. The complete model City: Poor infrastructure impedes economic growth, in order to stimulate growth and reduce poverty, it is essential to improve the supply, quality, and affordability of infrastructure services. Since several years our cities are not being changed, the world population is excepted to grow from 7 billion in 2011 to over 9 billion in 2050. So we really gonna have to think about how we can design new technologies for the city into different ways, so there is two-way solve the problems of the cities; to optimize the systems another to bring the behavioral changes. A model city helps to study this area for structural changes. A possible way to real-time simulation with digital twin city can address various domain solution for infrastructure development.

Imported OSM with 3D

Modelling, Geolocation of Buildings

Conclusions More people are now living in urban areas than the country for the first time and we need to build several new cities in the next 30 years. This put immense pressure on all areas of daily life: water, air, food, energy, space, and safety. 3D models are the 1st steps toward fulfillment of smart cities; if we imagine, simulate & experience cities for the people then we can create lively, safe, sustainable, and healthy cities. industry say that the task of architecture is the creation of human environment. The prime reason behind WCFA’s milestones in the architectural education industry is that it adopts a pluralistic approach to teaching architecture that includes both theoretical and empirical approaches. At this institute, students have opportunities to become instinctively conscious in their understanding of the built environment through the realization of values, culture, technology and social behavior. The future of work practice is tending towards a rich scenario of diverse viewpoints and of collaboration. The student consciously is at times an individual and many a times, a collaborator in a group. The environs at WCFA allow the nurturing of the student to find their unique expression of thought leading to knowledge and action.
