EDITOR’S NOTE

A PROMISING CAREER IN HEALTHCARE

I

f any industry can boast of being immune to recession or any other crisis, then it is health and its allied sectors. Pharmacy is one such industry that will always remain unaffected in the face of any emergency. Till there is life on earth, healthcare will always be crucial, and medicines will always be in demand to treat diseases or improve the quality of life. Pharmacy, hence, is the backbone of the medical field. So, during the pandemic, when the entire world was under lockdown, only pharmaceutical or medical shops were open besides essential commodities. If you are interested in the medical field and a lucrative career, being a doctor is not the only option. Pharmacy is a promising

career. And unlike popular perception, studying pharmacy will not land you jobs only at the chemist’s or in dispensaries. A degree in pharmacy throws you a wide range of opportunities, and you could be spoilt for choice.

As we oscillate between waves of the pandemic and lockdowns, resulting in uncertainties in the job market and career growth, pharmacy is one field that will not just survive but will thrive. Pharmacy is the right career, and it is happening now and here.

With a degree in pharmacy, you can opt for quality control and analysis of medical drugs, drug production and manufacturing, pharmaceutical sales and marketing, teaching, and supply and distribution of medicines as a wholesaler or retailer. Besides several pharmaceutical companies are into production and research of medical drugs and vaccinations.

Several pharmacy colleges are working relentlessly to equip students with the desired knowledge, expertise, and skills. Few of these colleges are simply remarkable. We have featured them in our latest edition of The Knowledge Review, The 10 Most Leading Institutes in Pharmacy, 2021. Happy reading!

Dr Bala Prabhakar Dean

receive B. Pharm degree and MBA degree in pharmaceutical technology after successful completion of the programme. MBA (Pharma. Tech.) is an integrated programme specially designed for 10 + 2 students, who wish to develop managerial skills in pharmacy. The course is meticulously designed to suit the needs of Pharma industry. This also saves one academic year and the struggle for admission to top B-schools after graduation in pharmacy. SPPSPTM also offers three years ‘M. Pharm.+ MBA’, an integrated programme spread over six semesters, leading to Master of Pharmacy and Master of Business Administration, MBA (Pharma Tech & Healthcare Management). The candidate will acquire two postgraduate degrees – one in technical field (research) and second in managerial skills in Pharma field. This also saves one academic year. The institute also offers four-year B. Pharm. programme and two-year Diploma in Pharmacy programme. The programmes are designed as per the regulations of Pharmacy Council of India. These programmes focus on skill building of students to render their services in hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy and various levels in the pharma industry. All the pharmacy programmes have received the approval from Pharmacy Council of India. Each curriculum is dynamic and is revisited regularly based on the needs of pharma industry. Bolstering Careers The school has a separate placement cell which arranges mock interviews to help students prepare for the process of

campus recruitment. The faculty emphasizes on teaching additional points during curriculum delivery for preparing students for entrance examinations for higher studies. Interaction with alumni and guest lectures are regularly arranged to discuss current developments in the pharma field to help in selecting the domain for their career. The New Normal Education is one of the most affected fields due to Covid-19 pandemic. Within no time the school adapted to this situation; with the help of available IT support from the university, the classes are conducted in online mode. It maintained the momentum and continuity of all academic activities with the help of online tools. Special training was organized for faculty members for using the digital platforms for course delivery. Practical component is an important part in all pharma programmes. Covid situation severely affected this component as students could not visit the campus due to restrictions. The school started with ‘Instructions and demonstration’ sessions for students

which include demonstrations of the experiments performed by the faculty in the laboratory. This helped students to understand the practicals in a better way. The students will be performing these experiments when the situation normalizes.

Awards and Accolades

Future Prep The university is now looking forward to implementing the Assurance of Learning (AoL) process across all its schools. This AoL process will enable continuous monitoring and enrichment of the programme to ensure that the students have achieved the set goals. T R

Smart Drugs I

understand your desire for a more efficient brain. Hell, I’ve wanted that ever since I can remember.

For the longest time, the idea that drugs or pharmaceuticals could supersize the human brain was decidedly sciencefiction. But the vast amount of research and developments done by real-world researchers and drug makers in the field

of nootropics, which promises to improve various aspects of cognition, is delivering eye-popping results. Suddenly that idea doesn’t seem so science fiction after all! Nootropics are all the rage in the student community these days. Unauthorized usage of prescription medicines like Adderall and Ritalin for ADHD and Modafinil for narcolepsy is now frequent among American university students. However, these drugs are not being used for escaping work and avoiding responsibility, but rather to dive right into the work and do it better. Various surveys show that more than 20% of Ivy League college students have already tried these so-called ‘smart drugs.’ Naturally, this habit of medicating for high performance tends to be carried on to the work setting as the pressure to perform is unlikely to disappear the moment students graduate from college. There are already multitudes of over-the-counter (OTC) products – which anyone can avail of online or in brickand-mortar stores – that claim to boost creativity, memory, decision-making or other high-level brain functions. Some of the most well-known supplements are a combination of vitamins, phytochemicals, lipids, and antioxidants taken from food that have been related to healthy brain function in studies. But do these smart drugs really work? There was no convincing evidence of increases in cognitive performance in a 2015 review of several nutrients and dietary supplements. While it is a possibility and there are no shortages of ‘plausible mechanisms’ linking these and other food-sourced nutrients to better brain function, still, as per professor of medicine Dr David Hogan, supplements cannot replicate the complexity of natural food and provide all its potential benefits.

Ritalin and Adderall have concentration-strengthening effects. A vast amount of people have reported that the use of these enhancers do increase narrow focus after consumption, many still have reported side effects such as insomnia, hallucinations, seizures, and heart trouble. Also, they’re quite addictive! Most recently, the drug ‘Modafinil’ has been gaining popularity for its ‘sleep restraining’ effects. Modafinil is designed to bolster ‘wakefulness’ in people with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea or shift work disorder. But when people without these disorders consumed the prescriptive pill, it has been linked with improvements in alertness, energy, focus, and decision-making. Another factor that supports the usage of modafinil is that most of the existing research on it hasn’t conclusively turned up any long-term health risks. However, the favourite nootropic of a majority of the working class, by a long shot, is 1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine. This chemical is known to boost many traits of cognition by improving alertness. It is also linked to some memory benefits. Of course, 1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine goes by another name – caffeine. While initially caffeine was once considered risky, today many experts agree that caffeine is more beneficial than harmful when consumed in moderation. But if you’re really looking to boost your brain function in a 100% proven to be safe and effective way, then there is nothing better than some good old fashioned exercise. Exercise has the ability to beat any pill when it comes to people trying to improve their cognition or memory who are otherwise healthy. There’s overwhelming evidence that daily exercise enhances memory and fends off age-related cognitive decline. Working out also bolsters your heart health and lowers your risk for death and disease. Exercise isn’t as effortless as taking a pill, agreed. But it is likely the safest way to strengthen your brain, at least for now. T R

Braving Challenges Then and Now The institute, since its inception, has faced many challenges in terms of paucity of quality faculty, resources and funds, making students employable, addressing and providing skills to meet students’ requirement of knowledge, and building state-of-the-art infrastructure. “The education sector, often considered recession-proof, has not been spared by the current crisis of COVID-19, and we are at arm-chairs in delivering a quality pedagogy due to technocracy disability, and challenges in maintenance of recurring cost and improvement of infrastructure. The major challenge is the limited sanctioned intake for pharmacy program,” said the management of the institute.

Promoting Effective Learning Self-learning at the institute, enables and enhances individual students’ competencies and capacities of academic literacy through student mentorship program, peer project discussion, preceptorship and internship training, guest lectures from industry, provision of tutorial classes, drug club and journal club presentations, case presentations, students’ seminars and instrumentation hands-on training; thus, teaching learning process is made effective. Pedagogy During the Pandemic RIPER believes knowledge sharing should be the inclination of the deliverer and seeking should be on the learner’s side. “Digitization during these challenging times has no doubt penetrated deep and changed the teachinglearning process, but our faculty members made strenuous efforts in establishing a hybrid pedagogy with personalized and mastery-based instruction, giving students control over the time, place, path and pace of their learning. This blended methodology, left our educational offerings with no decline in value to our old-time classroom learning,” said the management.

Self-development through

W

e are all familiar with the Greek Story writer Aesop's tale of the 'Hare and Tortoise'. We have heard this right from our childhood. The hare challenges the tortoise to run a race. The tortoise takes the challenge. The hare is quite sure and overconfident of his nimble feet and his win. He starts quickly and covers a considerable amount of distance very easily and then dozes off thinking that the tortoise will never catch up with him. Meanwhile, the tortoise keeps on moving one step at a time and soon catches up with the hare who is still dozing off peacefully. The tortoise is the first to cross the finish line. The moral - Slow and steady wins the race! This story exactly depicts the principle of Kaizen. Kaizen is a famous Japanese philosophy that means 'continuous improvement'. It is like the tortoise taking one step at a time towards the finishing line. It comes from two Japanese words, 'Kai' and 'Zen' which mean 'Change is good'. This was developed after the American Professor W. Edward Deming introduced his theory to the Japanese called Deming's theory. He was the one who gave us the cycle of Plan, Do, Check and Act (PDCA) which the Japanese later developed in the Kaizen Principle of continuous improvement. To encourage minimum wastage on the

30 | July 2021

Kaizen production line and maximum output, the Kaizen philosophy introduced the 5S Principles which are Japanese Window words - Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. 5S Principles evolved through the Toyota Production System that focussed on minimizing wastage of what we call Lean Management. Though these principles are for a workstation in a production company let us see how we can use the 5S Principles for our Self Development. 1. Seiri (Sort) - Seiri principle encourages employees to sort out the things on their workstations as necessary or unnecessary. There are many things, for example - on our work desk that we rarely use but they are scattered on the desk and make our work more confusing and complicated. They dissuade us from being organized. They can become a distraction to our smooth functioning and development. The principle encourages us to ‘red tag’ such unwanted material and separate it from what is necessary and useful. In our personal lives for our personal development, we can use the 80/20 Pareto Principle to sort out what is necessary and unnecessary. 20% of things in our lives help us to develop by 80%. We have to identify such vital

things that are necessary to our growth. They may be planning our day ahead, meditation, exercise, note-taking, smiling, focussing on our purpose and goals. Once we have identified the essentials we can very well say no to the non-essentials like social media, gossiping, daydreaming, going for long breaks, addictions etc. Remember when you organize, you are sure to rise! 2. Seiton (Set in order) - The second 'S' in Kaizen is for Seiton which encourages the employees at workstations to set in order their types of equipment as per their needs and priorities of use. This principle can be briefly termed with the phrase - A Place for everything and everything in its place. Once what was unnecessary was done away with, now what is necessary, has to be organized as per its importance, value, priority and usage. In our lives too there are 4 areas that we need to give our attention to. We have to be able to say that in these 4 areas of my life "There's a place for everything and everything is in its place." These four areas are our mind (intellect), body (physical needs), heart (emotional life, relations) and Spirit (Significance and meaning). How many of us can say that we give proper time to all these areas of our lives? We

take time every day to stimulate our intellect to help us grow, we take time for exercise and see that we are doing enough for our bodily needs as well as our and our families' sustenance, we lead a balanced social life and our relationships are well oiled be it with our family members, our neighbours or the people at work or in the society. We are also connected to our 'True North' our true purposes in life and as Maslow put it 'becoming everything we are meant to become'. Once we are able to put all these facets of our lives in place and maintain the balance by giving them attention and our time, we are on our way to exponential growth and results in our lives. 3. Seiso (Shine)- This principle in the 5S of Kaizen encourages the employees to keep their workstations well-marked and clean. They are encouraged to take the responsibility that their workstations, their equipment, and surroundings are properly cleaned and shining. How do we apply this principle to our lives? When we talk of our personal lives, we are well aware of the importance of thoughts. Our thoughts give form to our words, which in turn produce our emotions and then actions follow. Actions will become our habits, and finally, our habits will either make or break our destiny, depending upon whether we have formed good or bad habits. So Seiso is about keeping our thoughts, words, deeds clean! When we think in the right way, when we think good thoughts the corresponding words and actions will follow which in turn will go on to form our habits and

32 | July 2021

destinies. Here the Rotary Organization’s 4 questions come to mind which I believe we should always ask before entertaining a thought- Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and good relations? And finally, is it beneficial for all? Once we pass a thought through these filters, we can be sure that we are forming good habits that we will be thankful for in the future. 4. Seiketsu (Standardize) - Seiketsu is a principle in Kaizen philosophy that encourages people in an organization to have a standard to follow. Whatever doesn't fit the standard is rejected. So test and see if something works. If it does - keep it. If it doesn't - throw it away! When we discuss personal development in relation to this principle, we have many things in our lives that further our cause and purpose and then there are things that obstruct our digress us from our purposes. We have to know the 'standard' in our lives that is conducive to our progress and growth and anything that is against the standard we have to learn to reject it. Like Stephen Covey said, "It's easier to say 'no' when there's a deeper 'yes' burning within". That deeper 'yes' is the standard that we need to adhere to. Many of us are confused with what to accept or what is acceptable behaviour? Let's take an example. Let me ask you what will work for you a smile or a frown. The answer is too obvious. So 'smile' is one of the standards that we ought to live by. 5. Shitsuke (Sustain)- The final 5S Principle of Kaizen is called Shitsuke

meaning Sustain. Sustain is 'keep on keeping on'. It is easy to establish a standard, but it is difficult to maintain it. It is easy to rise and be successful but very difficult to keep or sustain. So, this principle encourages the employees to sustain the standard that works for them and to make it a custom practice, a habit. It takes a trigger, action and reward loop to form a habit. For example, my friend comes for tea at my table this triggers my action of smoking; I smoke and the nicotine works on my physique calming and soothing my senses – that is a reward. This is a negative example of how a habit is formed. But for personal development we have to do certain things that work for us, that further our purposes till they become a habit. Someone rightly said, "A good habit is difficult to form but easy to live with; a bad habit is easy to form but difficult to live with. This principle encourages us to continue with what works for us in our lives and sustain it till it becomes a habit and this takes discipline and training. But it is a discipline that we will be thankful for in the long run… Conclusion: So, let's sum up the 5S principles of Kaizen. Sort out what helps you and what does not; be balanced by giving time for your mind, body, emotional life and spiritual life, keep your words, actions and thoughts clean; have a standard (values) to live by, and finally, maintain the standard so that it becomes a habit. Let me end with this wonderful quote by Jim Rohn, “Success is a few simple disciplines practised every day.” May the 5S principles lead you to success! T R

The Leading Light Shri Amit Nitinrao Kolhe, Managing Trustee of Sanjivani Rural Education Society, is a visionary and an educationist. He is a dedicated philanthropist, who dedicated his life for economic and social development of rural people through education and industrialization. He has completed his computer engineering along with MBA in Marketing, a blend of being a technocrat and a strategist. He has been awarded as ICON of Education by Lokmat newspaper, honoured by Education Minister of Maharashtra Shri Vinod Tawde. It is a 38-year-old institute and has been recognized for its best academic practices and infrastructure set up in recent years through best college awards by University of Pune and recognition of NBA and NAAC (A Grade). Amit brings with him an experience of managing institutes in rural India and carry practical experiences and perspectives on challenges related to imparting higher education in rural India. He is also Treasurer of Association of Managements UnAided Engineering and Polytechnic

Colleges for Maharashtra State. He has experience on a similar task force in the past, such as Committee of Government of Maharashtra regarding Policy in Professional Education in Maharashtra State. Amit has been elected as a board member of CII Western Region Education SubCommittee for the academic year 2018-19. His dynamic leadership brings about much needed social reforms through education to empower individuals to become the backbone of an enterprising, productive society. Having deep concern for the poor, rural populace and the weaker sections of the society, he decided to dedicate his resources and expertise to the cause of their upliftment and took a firm foot in that direction by establishing “Sanjivani Foundation” which has come a long way in a short span of time, to become an enterprising entity in the rural education. Beating the Challenges The recent years saw many pharmacy colleges expanding across the country, especially in rustic India. However, a constant weeping is that students from many from these institutes lack exposure due to an outdated curriculum and various other factors. “It is not that we don't have the right talent, but the main problem is lack of exposure. Upgrading the talent of students belonging to rural areas remains a big challenge. Hands-on training in any course is the necessary gap that needs to be urgently bridged so a student can understand the value and spirit of the programme. It becomes necessary to follow the rapid and continuous changes in pharma industry, which makes academiaindustry interaction a requirement,” professed the college management. Grooming Future Pharmacists The college observes that a pharmacist

is an integral and important part of the health care system. The pharmacist has to play many active roles in many areas of healthcare may it be in research, formulation development, community pharmacy or compounding and dispensing. The list is long. Every role is unique and requires training. However, to cultivate the sense of responsibility towards patient health, one must be empathetic enough, knowledgeable and trained enough to guide/advice the patient. To be a pharmacist one must have good communication skills also along with subject expertise. “We hold the vision to make them morally responsible, ethically aware, technically vibrant, and socially empathetic pharmacists who are ever ready to face the challenges in the midst of ever-changing environment. We have established Institutional Innovation Cell with the guidance from Ministry of Education’s (MoE) Innovation Cell formerly known as (MHRD's Innovation Council) where we can nurture the creative ideas from the students and allows its growth in Sanjivani-Pre-incubator. We provide

them necessary support and for that we have created specific student's club which are run by students for the students for example – Sanjivani Idea Club, Sanjivani Innovation Club, Sanjivani IPR Club,” informed the management. To build social skills and interpersonal communication which is essential for performing any role such as a community pharmacist, the college organises various camps in rural areas through National Service Scheme. It involves basic technical training along with a lot of social interaction which improves communication skills, social awareness and cultivates an empathetic attitude amongst students. Many students acknowledged changed perspective and mindset after attending such camps which underlies importance of such initiatives. Besides, various clubs like pharma club, Swarangan gives exposure to hidden talents of students. The college has proactive National Service Scheme (NSS), Women Empowerment Cell (WEC) through which various social activities are executed for the benefit to

the society, separate career and competitive examinations guidance cell through which students have also recorded excellent results every year in the competitive examinations such as Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT), Common Management Admission Test (CMAT), MHT-CET, and Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) etc., which are conducted nationwide. Industry Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC) consisting of faculty and members from industry, is functioning with the objectives of providing high quality technical education, networking with industries and bridging the gap between industry and academia. Seeing the Positive during Covid-19 The college finds it a blessing in disguise that the pandemic literally forced the education system to take upon new ways to deliver the education. Conservative education system has been forced to upgrade from chalk and talk to pedagogical tools. Flipped Classroom, Google Classrooms, MOOCS-based tools, MOODLES-based Learning Management System (LMS) are the modern tools of pedagogy. “Of course, both systems have their pros and cons but a good blend of both will be the future of education. Everyone involved in the education system have realised the intense need to shift focus from Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and the same have been followed by the New Education Policy (NEP). These were the gifts of the pandemics,” said the management. SCPER has developed its own Moodle-based Learning Management Tool through which teachers have delivered the content in lockdown period. Students were highly satisfied

Achievements, Accolades, Accreditations and Awards with this initiative. Teachers have adopted online teachings and developed high quality online content by using various screen recording tools (ZOOM, Screen Cast-o-Matic etc) and developed their own ecourses based on their expertise. These online tools have surely increased the awareness of teachers and helped them restructure academic delivery in more interesting and funways. Ambitions for the Future The college looks ahead to achieving number of targets for the betterment of the students and the society. Some of them are Ÿ To become first private autonomous institute in the state Ÿ Collaboration with national and international institutes Ÿ To have laboratory approved by National Accreditation Board for Laboratories to cater the needs of several industries located in periphery for sample analysis by using sophisticated instruments Ÿ Incubation centre – To develop the innovative ideas given by students and to develop proof of concept for further scaling up and technology transfer Ÿ Encourage initiatives related to Entrepreneurship Development Ÿ Skill Development Centre in collaboration with Industries Ÿ To become centre of excellence in academic, research and training T R

ndia’s pharmaceutical sector is the world's third largest by volume, and the country's market produces 60% of all vaccines worldwide. India supplies affordable and low-cost generic drugs to millions of people around the globe. Additionally, the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) market is forecasted to attain a revenue of $6 billion by the end of 2020. However, Indian manufacturers rely heavily on China for APIs for the production of their medicine formulations, garnering around 70 percent from

manufacture, and diagnostics,” Dr Y. Padmanabha Reddy explained.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has revealed both the strengths and the weaknesses of the Indian Pharmaceutical sector. While India has shown its capability in manufacturing the final drug, it has done so while relying in large part on foreign trade and suppliers, most notably China, for its raw materials. This is an arrangement that doesn’t sit well anymore with many economic bodies that are now looking to make the entire value chain in India.

“The Indian pharma industry is expected to hold a key position in the global pharma sector to cater to the global demand (more than 50%) for various vaccines,” remarked Dr Sajal Kumar Jha. “This sector is already the highest globally in generic drug supply, supplying 25% and 40% of generic medicines in the UK and USA, respectively. The Indian pharmacy industry is anticipated to grow to $100 billion by the year 2025, whereas the medical device market is anticipated to grow to $25 billion. Furthermore, the Indian biopharma (biotech) industry is expected to grow to $100 billion by 2025,” he added.

But is India ready to rise to the challenge and become a pharmaceutical superpower? This is not a ‘million-dollar question’, it’s a ‘Billion-dollar question’! Dr Sajal Kumar Jha - the Dean (officiating) of the School of Pharmaceutical Technology, Adamas University, weighed in on the matter saying, “With the onset of Covid-19 pandemic, the pharma sector has become one of the most demanding sectors globally and undergone radical changes. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to an increase in demand for medicine and healthcare tools. At the same time, this pandemic has caused the supply chain to be broken, and because of this, there is an alarming decrease in the supply of required healthcare products. Now, to efficiently adapt to the shifting requirements, it is compulsory for the sector to reskill, upskill and new skill (RUN) its workforce and promote an innovative work ecosystem.” Dr Y. Padmanabha Reddy explained the dynamics of the Indian pharmacy market post-covid by saying, “Today, the pharmaceutical industry remains a prominent hightechnology sector of the economy, and consistently maintains its competitiveness on the world market at a very high level with a revenue of 1.25 trillion U.S. dollars as of end-2019, which is a significant increase from 2001 with just 390 billion U.S. dollars.” Covid-19 has proven to be not only a global health catastrophe but also a hard-hitting economic problem for various economies, with a restricted reputation on multiple safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines discovered by the pharmaceutical business. “Pharmaceutical industries are focusing on prophylaxis, diagnosis, and therapy to tackle Covid-19 in three areas: treatment development, vaccine development and

“To meet the aforementioned projections in the post-Covid world, the pharmaceutical industry must undergo significant transformations and implement a variety of measures, including changes in the healthcare model, changes in daily lifestyles, technological aspects, changes in workplace patterns, digital infrastructure, digital learning/training, and technological adeptness to improve workforce quality. This sector needs to devise and implement diverse strategies to remain successful in the post-Covid world,” concluded Dr Sajal Kumar Jha. The lockdown triggered by Covid-19 in 2020 has adversely impacted all sectors. However, unlike other sectors, the pharmaceutical industry has experienced significant growth in domestic as well as global markets in past five years. The pharmacy sector in India is thus expected to see a bright future. Dr Anupama Diwan – the Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Appejay Stya University elaborated on the same idea saying, “The pharmaceutical sector is contributing significantly to India’s economic growth. India’s pharmaceutical sector is among the top 10 sectors in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and reducing the trade deficit.” “India is now well known as ‘Pharmacy of the World’ and contributes heavily to the global demand for vaccines (62% by volume) and to the global generics market (>20% by volume). Indian pharmaceutical industry, popularly known as the ‘archetype of affordable healthcare’, is thus significantly contributing to improving public health both in India as well as across the globe,” concluded Dr Anupama Diwan. by the Economic Times for demonstrating exemplary leadership qualities, amongst others. Very recently, she received the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ as part of Dainik Jagran’s Iconic Awards 2021. The Prime Mover For the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the main focus has always been to give real-time industry exposure to every student. Its library has the most comprehensive search database. The labs are equipped with modern and sophisticated instruments. For student placements and training, the school is supported by its Corporate Resource Centre. The Group’s very own pharma companies also absorb students from the Institute. A few of the other major recruiters are Wipro, IDS Infotech Ltd., Jubilant, Piramal, Mylan, Medicare, Dr. Reddy, Pfizer, Dabur, Biocon, Sun Pharma, Fresenius Kabi, Netmeds, etc. Struggles: Then & Now The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers varying practical-oriented programmes that require hands-on training for a better understanding of concepts. But when the programmes

first started, ASU faced many problems, as many were not aware of pharmacy as a programme. To increase awareness, the School launched many initiatives. Now, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, laboratory/hands-on training is not a feasible option. To overcome this, the School's faculties give a live demonstration of experiments in laboratories and also use different types of software. Also, looking at the growth of its campus, many pharmacy colleges have opened up in the area surrounding ASU. However, the quality of education offered by ASU’s School of Pharmaceutical Sciences helps it rise above the herd. The School has introduced an elearning programme wherein students have shown overwhelming responses.

It has also provided an opportunity for institutions to introduce customised learning. Additionally, the institution has introduced various digital platforms that the students capitalise on to continue their education. Scaling the Future Looking ahead, the college would like to sign more MoUs with national & international universities and initiate student exchange programmes. Three skill development courses have been approved by the UGC & National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and these courses will be launched in the upcoming academic session (2021). Soon, the college plans to promote research at each level, starting from the first year itself. It will also implement multiple exit options (with due recognition/certificate/diploma, etc.) shortly as NEP 2020 enables it. T R

This led to a fundamental change known as moving 'beyond the pill' which arose from two main realisations: The Pharma-IoT concepts involving digitization of medical products; and related care processes using smart connected medical devices and IT services (web, mobile, apps, etc.) during drug development, patient care, and clinical trials. With this shift in overall approach, the field of pharma got a whole lot more interesting. The outcomes of Pharma-IoT in development and clinical trials can employ

Overcoming Hardships During the initial phase, the institute had a handful of faculty members and the advisory board members and their major challenge was to obtain the conditional approval from the regulatory body of pharmacy education in India: The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The PCI offers its affiliation only after completion of four academic years to an institute under Section 12. However, during the initial years the Institute should have the conditional
