The Odyssey of Numbers Along the Time Route T

he world since time immemorial has been full of advancements and innovations, which have framed the way it functions. New technologies are changing how youngsters are learning or are being taught things. Every individual today has access to endless technological and digital tools both inside and outside the classroom. It’s interesting to note how all this came to be in the first place along with its implementation into the context of learning experiences. All this though, started off on a smaller scale and out of immense curiosity. Technology is after all nothing but numbers coded into computers to form a particular application for everyone else to see. Mathematics was regarded as the science of quantity in varied forms such as magnitude (as in geometry) or numeric (as in arithmetic) or a generalization of all these fields (as in algebra). Here’s where it all started, continued and will remain so.

EDITOR’S VOICE Prehistoric Mathematics – Humans in the early ages were intellectuals in their own manner. They had the general sensibility and knew the difference between singulars and multiples. The shift into the concrete idea and invention of symbol or descriptive words to describe the quantities was abstract and took quite a while to come into effect on the majority. The Early Man had a very different manner of keeping track of regular occurrences such as the seasons and phases of the mankind. The earliest evidence of counting in mankind’s history is the carved bones found in South Africa that date back to 35,000 to 20,000 years ago. Babylonian Multiplication Tables (1800 BCE) – Their form of mathematics replaced that of the Sumerians sometime in the 2000 BC. It’s interesting to know that the Babylonians adopted the same style of cuneiform writing on clay tablets. Their system has the base set at 60 where the base stands at 10 in the modern world.

The Early Egyptians (6000 BCE) – The fertile Nile valley is where they found their residence and started off their lives. They were the pioneers in hieroglyphs and this civilization has always been shrouded in mystery. They began recording the lunar phases and seasons for reasons both agricultural and religious. The oldest mathematical text was from ancient Egypt known as the Moscow Papyrus. It originated from the Egyptian Middle Kingdom around 2000 – 1800 BCE.

18th Century Mathematics – The late 17th and early 18th century were credited to the likes of Sir Issac Newton and Leibniz and their ideas of calculus, which were helpful in solving plenty of problems in the streams of physics, astronomy, and engineering.

21

Early Chinese Mathematics – They wrote down their math problems on the oracle bone script, which dates back to the Shang dynasty (1600-1050 BCE). They had a very efficient yet simplified system which utilized bamboo sticks which are arranged to represent the numbers 1-9. They were then placed in columns to represent units, tens, hundreds and thousands. The Chinese decimal is the closest to the present day decimal system. Mayan Mathematics – The Mayan Civilization had a settlement in the central region of America from 2000 BCE. This phase known as the Classic Period stretches from 250 CE to 900 CE. They were known to be experts of astronomy and calendar calculations. This did after all require complicated mathematics. The Mayans had an immensely sophisticated number system, which was more advanced than all other parts of the world. They used a system known as the vigesimal number system whose base was set at 20 and sometimes at 5 which possibly originated from counting ones fingers and toes. Indian Mathematics – India has constantly been a hotspot for academic advancements since the vedic age. The early Vedic period is evidence of the use of arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, squares, cubes and roots. The ancient Hindu symbol, which resembles a circle with a dot in the center is known as the bindu, was one the most significant discoveries. It signified the concept of zero, which also originated in India and gave a new direction to Math, as we know it.

Islamic Mathematics – Their contributions to the world of numbers is also immense as it gave shape to some of the most unique architectural marvels in the world. This phase has given the world the different forms of symmetry that can be depicted on a two dimensional surface.

Numbers and calculations have become an essential part in our daily lives, be it while buying groceries at the store or counting to 10 while playing a game. The prominence of Mathematics keeps rising in advancement alongside human development. Add to the fact that the need for calculation is inherent as it holds a bigger picture to transform the world to be a better place.

Expert’s Input

T

here has been a paradigm shift in the teaching methods used by the present day trainers. The mostly used and abused method of training namely the ‘Lecture Method’ is not the only method used now days by the trainers. There are more than 100 methods of training available to trainers. The choice of method adopted depends upon the objectives, the entry behaviour, the resources available and the entry behaviour of the trainee and so on. However, one of the methods available is known as ‘Educational Tour or a Field Trip’. An Educational Tour or A Field Trip is a visit to a place away from their normal place of study. The purpose of this trip is to provide students an experience outside the class rooms or labs. It also provides an opportunity non experimental research and helps bring all the students to a common platform irrespective of their social, economic & cultural background. While on an educational tour/field trip a student gets to experience first-hand the concepts which help in long term retention of the knowledge. If the class room teaching is followed up by a field trip, it helps in clearing the concepts & results in more effective learning. It also helps in application of ideas, theories & knowledge which ensure competence. Discussing during the trip help the students to find solutions to real life problems and makes them innovative. Field trips helps erase pressure the boredom & monotony of having to attend a lecture. It is fun way of learning & makes it more enjoyable.

While on an educational tour/field trip a student has the opportunity of interacting with different people which helps develop social behaviour and create a social network, contacts & references. It gives them an opportunity to inculcate the habit of travelling alone & in groups and making them more empathetic towards fellow students. Field Trips are important component of hospitality education. Using the experiential approach as a teaching method industry related visits should be organised more frequently which will provide an opportunity to students learn about organisations related to diverse aspects of the hospitality industry. In the area of hospitality education field visits to Hotels, Vineyard, Distilleries Travel Agencies, Corporate Houses, Institutional & Industrial Catering establishments etc. should be organised for helping the students to consolidate class room teaching and have better understanding of various SOP’s and systems being followed. It will also provide an opportunity to students to have firsthand experience and make them industry ready. Educational Tours & Field Trips provide an opportunity of experiential learning to students of all streams. They should be part of the curriculum but need to be well planned & structured under the supervision/guidance of an experienced trainer. In order to ensure the maximum benefit, a field trip or an educational tour has to be well planned. There are 3 phases involved in organising a field trip:-

While on an educational tour/field trip students have the opportunity to have lively discussion in an informal set up. Experience gathered during a field trip to vineyards, hotels, tourist places, factories, breweries etc. are of immense benefit to students and help make learning fun and long lasting. Educational Tour/Field Trips also provide an opportunity to students to evolve and be on their own which helps make them independent Interactions with people outside helps improve communication skills and makes them more accommodating. The educational tour/field trip helps in developing overall personality of students. While on an educational tour to a new property or place is great fun, its main objective is learning. It exposes the students to the outside world, be it local & global issues. It improves them with a new prospective and helps in developing overall personality.

The first step is Careful Preparation. This includes research about the place, the distance, the mode of transport, duration, timings & approval from the host organisation, financial planning etc. The second step is the briefing of the students regarding the points to be observed, noted and discussed with the staff and the do’s & don’ts they have to follow. The last and the final step is the follow up activity which includes a report on the learning and discussing to reinforce the same. As Neil deGrasse Tyson, the famous American astrophysicist said:Research in Education has shown that students remember field trips long into memory.

ccessibility of educational resources has always been seen as an important and integral aspect of

B-schools and focused on improving teaching -learning process, thereby ensuring the school’s quality service to society. Resources play an important role in the overall development of the students. With the advancement of technology, the knowledge centers are shifting from library to virtual world. Youth is looking forward to updating of knowledge from online resources. Additionally, the regulatory bodies have also given due importance to the MOOC courses (massive online open courses). There are multiple agencies who are offering MOOC courses that include EDX, Coursera etc. In Indian context, swayam has been able to successfully launch many MOOC courses. MOOC courses are developed by highly experienced faculty from different universities across the globe. Students can download the mobile application of EDX, Coursera or can use the website mode to register for a specific course. Students are keen to learn from technology enabled services and thus the role of online resources has emerged in a big way. Students are further advised to update from the newspapers (economic times), for which the number of applications are available for mobile. Most of the B-schools provide copy of economic times to the students and is a part of discussion in classroom. Students are further advised to update themselves from the various websites such as WWW.RBI.ORG, WWW.IMF.ORG, WWW.WTO.ORG, WWW.COMMERCE.NIC.IN, WWW.DGFT.GOV.IN etc It is recognized that effective learning can take place in formal and informal environments through student peer interaction and that learners are encouraged to be contributors rather than just users in teaching and learning approach. Although somewhat inconsistent, student attitudes to sharing material were usually positive in B-Schools.
