The Tides of Evolution Arriving at the Shores of Education
T
hrough the course of time, the evolution of education has been significant. From chalkboards to projectors, from notebooks to portable devices, and from classrooms to laptop screens, the transcendence has been reformative. The inclusion of cutting-edge technology has fueled the education sector’s development and efficiency in terms of matching up to the current employability standards required by the diverse commercial market. It won’t be long until the use of artificial intelligence and robotics become a prominent inclusion in the educational sector. There are now trends being created in the methods of imparting education, like that of the use of audio-visual courseware, 3D animation, cloud learning, and many such offerings under the umbrella term named online learning. There are currently more than 4,700 colleges and universities that provide online courses to their students. An online school or college trains students completely or chiefly online and/or through the internet. A concrete definition would be an education that uses technology to provide training to students who are disconnected from their teacher and to support consistent and functional communication between the students. Online schools have now become a common notion almost globally, right from K-12, graduate schools and universities. Evidently, online learning facilitates students to appear for recognized exams, earn transferable credits and/or take a step further towards higher education. Online learning is most frequently exercised at the high school or college grade. Students of the age 30 years or more incline towards studying through online programs at developed rates. This age group represents 41% of the online education populace, while 35.5% of students of ages 24-29 and 24.5% of ages 15-23 partake in online education. Online learning is becoming increasingly used worldwide. In the year 2015, more than 6 million students had enrolled to at least one online course, this number propagated by 3.9% from the preceding year. 29.7% of all higher education students are enrolling to at least one distance course. The total amount of students learning on campus completely dropped by 931,317 students between the years 2012 and 2015. According to experts, because the number of students at the college level is increasing, there will also be an upsurge in the quantity of students enrolled in distance learning. T R

ong before the Spanish conquistadors arrived, generations of some of the earliest New World inhabitants hunted and camped at Blackwater Draw in eastern New Mexico. In 1912, the New Mexico constitution authorized an institution of higher education on the east side of the state. Today, situated on the high plains of the Llano Estacado in a region noted for dairy, farming and ranching, and the production of Valencia peanuts Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) holds true to that promise and to the values and needs of its community in Portales, the county seat of Roosevelt County. A Learning Journey – Nurturing Creativity and Innovation As New Mexico’s largest regional comprehensive university, Eastern New Mexico University enjoys an 84year legacy of service, opening as a junior college in 1934 for 165 students. Construction of the Administration Building began in 1931 before its opening in 1934 as a two-year college. With the addition of the third and fourth years of college courses in 1940 and graduate programs in 1949, the institution officially became a university. From its inception, ENMU has reflected and honored traditional values while remaking itself to meet new and emerging educational needs. A spacious campus serving over 6,000 students, Eastern has attractive residence halls, modern classroom buildings, state-of-theart computer and research labs, and a wide range of online programs, internships and oncampus employment opportunities for students. The one constant throughout its history is ENMU’s overarching goal: to place students and student learning at the center of
every institutional action and activity. “Eastern New Mexico University combines a traditional learning environment with 21st century technology to provide a rich educational experience. Eastern emphasizes liberal learning, freedom of inquiry, cultural diversity and whole student life. Excellent teaching and active learning define campus relationships. Scholarship, both primary and applied, cultural enrichment and professional service are also important contributions of the University community.” Initiatives – Centers of Excellence The University offers a vibrant campus life that supports a diverse student body. Academic programs stress quality academics and supportive faculty advising and mentoring. Both traditional and cutting-edge programs are part of Eastern’s curriculum offerings. An on-campus swimming pool, wellness facility, basketball and tennis courts keep ENMU “Greyhounds” active while campus houses run by area churches address students’ spiritual health. ENMU competes in 14 varsity sports
in the largest NCAA DII conference in the nation, the Lone Star Conference, and hosts a strong intramural program for students, faculty and staff providing additional opportunities to remain active. A wide range of student organizations and interest groups offers students the chance to work with others in their majors to prepare for careers, perform community service, or participate in student government. Embracing the Global Culture: ENMU believes in the philosophy that quality education and learning should teach students to find their place in a global world. Campus events showcase these learning opportunities throughout the academic year: Ÿ Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15) Ÿ Native American Heritage (November) Ÿ Black History Month (February) Ÿ Women’s History Month (March) Ÿ Events celebrating traditions highlighted by the International students Ÿ Various educational events and activities programmed by the Office of Multicultural Affairs showcase African-American, Hispanic, International, and Native Affairs.
Multicultural Affairs also works to educate students through workshops and collaborations with other departments and grants about global issues and concerns. Students, faculty and staff of every ethnicity work together to embrace and encourage multicultural awareness. Multicultural Affairs culmination – A highpoint each spring is the Graduation Sashing Banquet, attended by families and friends of graduating students. Undergraduate and graduate students are presented with tribal sashes, Kentes, and country of heritage/ancestry sashes to wear at commencement. Each has the opportunity to address the audience with a personal comment about her or his educational experience and future goals. By honoring the families and heritage of students in this ceremony, the University demonstrates its commitment to recognizing the role family and culture play is shaping students’ educational careers and choices. Eastern’s Vision The Eastern community envisions a University where each faculty and staff member instills in one another and in the students a sense of social and cultural awareness and responsibility. The University accomplishes this by embracing ethnic, racial and cultural diversity as a core value and by actively building greater diversity among students, faculty and staff. Campus Life – Weaving the Success Web “A quality education doesn’t have to cost a fortune.”
ENMU’s campus has the look and feel of a traditional university with the high-tech classrooms and laboratories that today’s students expect. Since 2000, ENMU has invested over 200 million USD in creating state-of-the-art classrooms, renovating buildings and athletic facilities and constructing new residence halls all while maintaining low cost of attendance. Students can study the pre-history of North America at the University’s archeological site, Blackwater Draw, or forensic science in high-tech labs. ENMU students can enroll in accredited programs in programs of business, communicative disorders, music, nursing social work and by legacy programs in agriculture, art, theatre, modern languages, psychology, political science, pre-med, chemistry, history and more, each providing different opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in the many labs and other experiential learning facilities. Free tutoring, mentoring programs and special assistance in challenging classes assure students that help is always available to boost a grade, complete a research paper, or study for a tough exam. ENMU’s affordability and attention to student success has earned it numerous accolades and awards, and its graduates are quick to add their own endorsements. With the lowest tuition of New Mexico universities and the fifth lowest tuition in the southwestern region, ENMU takes seriously its mission to provide affordable, quality education and a successful experience to its students. Online or in person, graduate or undergraduate, transfer,
non-traditional, military or international, every Eastern student receives a quality educational experience. Career Opportunities Today’s students need degrees that prepare them for graduate study or the workforce. ENMU is highly focused on helping students achieve academic excellence, explore career opportunities and secure good jobs. The Student Academic Services team monitors the needs of online and oncampus students for tutoring, advising, scholarships and financial assistance, and applying for graduate school or for jobs. ENMU has collaborated with global job websites like ‘Glassdoor’ and ‘Indeed’ to provide ‘one-click’ access to employers to the ‘Buzzfile’ database to identify student job seekers. Technology is at the epicenter of today’s world, and ENMU’s Office of Counseling and Career Services offers technology-aided assistance for current students and alumni. Utilizing a pool of licensed counselors alongside the unique one-on-one web-support, current students and alumni have access to professional assistance for career prep including resume assistance and practice interviews. guidance.” Jake explained that attending ENMU prepared him for his career by teaching him to interact with others on a professional level. “I had to be able to engage with professors and University staff effectively to accomplish my goals. Teamwork and working well with others was also important to being successful at ENMU, which is certainly a valuable skill I use in my career,” he adds. Words of Trust “I am grateful that ENMU is considerate of students like myself who have family and work obligations and are not able to attend the on-site classes. ENMU has been a life saver for me; just when I had lost all hope of ever completing college, ENMU became the light at the end of the tunnel.” –Selene Chavez, Business Administration Major Thanchira Suriyamongkol chose to study biology at ENMU after a campus visit in 2016. She liked the small campus, which gave her the feeling of “home and family.” Intrigued by the diversity of animals in the High Plains, her master’s degree focused on under-studied wildlife species. –Thanchira Suriyamongkol, Biology Graduate Student T'Kayla Baker chose ENMU because of the small class sizes. “I wanted to go to a school where the teachers know you by your first name because you have a better chance at succeeding, especially if you need extra help. That’s better than being in a class three times as big where nobody knows your name, and you have to look outside of class for help.” –T’Kayla Baker, Early Childhood Education Major, Track & Field Competitor A Commitment to Student Success ENMU’s history has been marked by many high points, steady enrollment growth and recognition, but none is more important than the success of each student in achieving her or his personal academic, social and personal goals. Faculty, staff and administration see this as their highest priority. In 1934, ENMU lit a lamp of learning. Today, the light from that lamp burns brightly in its engaged students, successful alumni and dedicated staff. T R

Education, lays down the foundations of a developed citizen and, thus, a developed nation. Learning holds the key to numerous opportunities, when leveraged to its optimum. It is only when we learn that we are driven towards progress, and the journey is both endless and enlightening. This subsequently implies the vitality of an educational institution playing the role of a guiding light in that journey. Thus, in our endeavor to discover and exhibit the 20 most valuable online colleges in America, we came across an institution which redefines the benchmarks of comprehensive education. This is Capitol Technology University, providing top-notch learning experiences that lead an individual to success in the evolving global community. The university was initially founded in Washington, DC, as the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in 1927 by Eugene H. Rietzke. A Navy veteran and radio operator, Rietzke foresaw the need for an advanced school that could produce talented radio and electronics technicians. Over the subsequent decades, Capitol Tech expanded into a college and then, in 2014, a full-fledged university. Today, it offers more than 21 associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs, 10 master’s degree programs, and 6 doctoral programs. Capitol Tech offers courses in both traditional and online formats. Most undergraduate programs are on-campus, with third and fourth-year classes available online. Master’s programs are 100% online. Doctoral programs range from low-residency to 100% online. Being a military-friendly institution, Capitol Tech offers tuition discounts and other benefits to active duty personnel and veterans, as well as asynchronous courses that can be taken by soldiers stationed anywhere in the world. The university is part of the air force’s AU-ABC program, which provides a pathway to a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity for airmen enrolled in the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). T
he contemporary digital era has witnessed an emergence of revolutionary concepts and ideas which have spread like a wildfire across a myriad of macro as well as micro level consumer disciplines. Since the advent of the internet, an exponential amount of such concepts have been conceived, either out of a necessity to simplify a certain process or out of the need for disruption. But, it is evident that these digitalized concepts or simply a set of task-driven algorithms, have been efficiently transforming their associated disciplines and on a larger scale, the lives of people across the globe. Similarly, the discipline of education has also been witnessing a reformation since the inception of the internet. Seamless opportunities and fathomless possibilities have been derived through an appropriate application of digitalization and its advancements. The one major development which insinuated its presence into the list of digital advancements is online learning. It creates a virtual setting wherein the use of varied techniques inclusive of audio-visual recordings, presentations, interactive quizzes and games, and online discussion rooms are created and utilized. Online learning encompasses of not the agenda of overthrowing the traditional form of learning, but of optimizing, enhancing and empowering it. But these are still more nourishing for those seeking knowledge from prominent instructors. 6. Boosting your career: The presence of an online program on your resume only adds a positive reection of your willingness to learn more and that of self-development. Potential employers would apparently comprehend your sense of commitment towards obtaining more knowledge. It is merely a common misconception that employers are biased towards candidates who’ve acquired traditional college degrees. However, having an online degree from a prominent university will certainly spearhead your career. In its entirety, online learning exhibits a much lucid picture of what can possibly be considered as the future of learning. Although it contains the potential to radically change the face of traditional education, online learning can only thrive by being parallel or in concord with the old school, classroom learning. However, it remains undisputed when the question of accessibility of updated content, convenient course planning, and career enhancement arises. T R

oncordia University Wisconsin is a Lutheran higher education community committed to helping students develop in mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and the world”
Well known for its wonderful location, Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) has extremely breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, with its 200-acre residential campus situated along a half-mile of Lake Michigan shoreline in suburban Mequon. Today’s academic landscape is rapidly changing and Concordia’s administration has embarked on a mission that prepares its students to stand apart from the crowd and live an Uncommon Life. CUW has a 137-year history of helping students develop in mind, body, and spirit. The institute was founded in Milwaukee in 1881 and is affiliated with The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), and is a member of the Concordia University System. Concordia began offering four-year undergraduate degrees in the late 1970s. The Board of Regents approved a move to university status in 1989, and CUW became the first university among the 10-member Concordia University System. “Concordia University Wisconsin is about so much more than just earning a degree. It’s about being part of a bigger community that shares uncommon purpose and values,” asserts Dr. Patrick T. Ferry, President of Concordia University Wisconsin. A campus expansion and major library renovation was set to take place in 1982, before the campus was moved to Mequon prior to the start of the 1983 academic year. Today, it has a big campus which is surrounded by several attractive places and its location is one of the factors that attract students from all over the place to enroll and attend CUW. It has a modern campus with all required facilities and state-of-the-art infrastructure. Apart from these, it also has a perfect learning environment for students to explore new ideas, encourages creativity, and independent thinking. Moreover, the entire university is interconnected by an underground tunnel system. The university has four core values that guide the university's mission each day: Christ-Centered, Truth & Integrity, Excellence, and Service. A Christian University ‘CUW is a Christian university, not because we’re perfect people, but because we’re forgiven sinners who gather together in Christ’. CUW is a Christian university that instills in its students that ‘living a full Christian life is about more than worship.’ Several opportunities are provided for students to display their faith and make a difference in the lives of others. The institute provides ‘Excellence in Christian Education’ and two years back introduced a 'Live Uncommon’ theme where students are asked to stand apart from the crowd and develop a mission and servanthood mentality. Chapel is held from 9:30 am to 9:45 am daily during the academic year, as students, faculty and staff come together. In summary, at Concordia there is a Christian emphasis from how professors teach in the classroom to how athletes play on the field. “We deliver a distinctive, Christian higher education experience, where faith and knowledge intertwine,” asserts Dr. Patrick T. Ferry. Supporting Diversity and Encouraging Inclusion CUW embraces diversity and strives to encourage as well as display ethnic diversity. Every year more than 500 international students attend this institute, making CUW a truly international university. Moreover, such international students have grown exponentially over the years. Geographic diversity is high at Concordia University Wisconsin, which has a female to male ratio of approximately 3:2. Since classrooms are at the heart of student learning, and faculty members are the key to promote inclusion on campus. The faculty members play important roles in supporting the diversity in the class and teaching in more inclusive ways. T H E

An Able and Thought-out Leader The Rev. Dr. Patrick T. Ferry was elected as eighth President of Concordia University Wisconsin in 1997. He began his career at CUW as an Assistant Professor in 1991. He earned his Ph.D. as well as M.A. in history and M.Div. from the University of Colorado. Dr. Ferry asserts, “It is my great privilege to work each day alongside winsome people who champion the needs and concerns of others.” He continues, “Concordians are freed to pursue the uncommon path of dedicating their lives to make someone else’s life better.” Under his able leadership, the university has witnessed growth and initiated several innovative systems. In the past decade, he has overseen some important changes that include the construction of a new Business School, School of Pharmacy, and a residence hall that affords students breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. Dr. Ferry believes the measure that matters most is whether the Concordia education has ultimately driven students to live, breathe and demonstrate the university's excellence and that they are making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Divers and Specialized Curricula The university provides innovative syllabuses, multi-disciplinary programs, projects, and student centered pedagogy. The syllabus is specially designed to provide practical learning and hone the professional skills. Concordia University Wisconsin offers over 70 undergraduate majors and 40 graduate programs in six academic schools: Batterman School of Business, Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, Arts and Sciences, and Health Professions. The university offers more than a degree, as students make real connections in and out of class – relationships that can last a lifetime. CUW offers cutting-edge and extraordinary academic programs which provide lucrative employment opportunities.

Financial Aids and Scholarships CUW provides deserving students with a number of scholarships, aimed to help them in their search for excellence. They not only foster and nurture academic brilliance, providing aspiring achievers with the wherewithal, but also encourage achievers by acknowledging and honoring their achievements. While many colleges and universities across the United States boast that nearly 100% of their undergraduates receive financial aid assistance, scholarships are granted to more than a third of Concordia students. The average amount of total financial aid a student is awarded is approximately $24,000.00. Major Accomplishments Major achievements over the last three years include finalizing a state-of-the-art, 48,000 square foot School of Business that will be completed this June. While it will house the School of Business, it will invite collaboration among all the disciplines (health care, education, and science) with the purpose of infusing Christian business ethics and free enterprise principles to prepare graduates for the workforce. Health care remains a prime area of focus, as half of CUW’s six schools are in health care disciplines. The venue is meant to be a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship and transformational learning experiences that will both support and empower the next generation of leaders. A new Doctorate of Education of Leadership in Innovation and Continuous Improvement was added to the curriculum last summer, and Concordia’s 32,000 alumni are invited to be a part of alumni association events, with a number of local and out-state chapter events held annually. Career Development Activities The university has a career service office that is dedicated to helping the students and alumni to fulfill their desired career goals. It is committed to attend to the individual needs of students and ensure to achieve desired platforms for launching students’ professional careers. It offers ample employment opportunities, internship, engagement with employers and connection to resources. Moreover, it offers a variety of programs, services, assessments, and more to help build the career confidence and skill development. Placement rates following graduation are consistently well above the national average in a number of disciplines, including Nursing and Physician Assistant. T R T H E

o imagine someone without education is similar to picturing them being denied their basic human rights. A much adverse result would be someone not being empowered enough to lead their everyday life. Needless to say that the ways in which illiteracy affects an individual is similar to the ways it affects the entire nation. Education becomes priceless, when it aids in understanding the value of everything around us. And to enhance the value of education itself, is the noblest cause. Educational institutions are constantly striving to add value to the careers and personal lives of the youth, and Touro University Worldwide does a commendable exhibition of the same. TUW’s mission is to offer online degree programs to serve the needs of adult learners (service to society), professionals (intellectual pursuit), and the underserved (social justice). It is a 100% online University with no residential requirements, allowing students to study any time and from anywhere, using a state of the art technology, which enables students to access all course materials online with no additional costs for books. Although TUW is a completely online university, it does not refrain from promoting a democratic learning environment that provides students with the settings to explore real-world cases, and impact social justice, some of TUW’s degree programs are in the areas of Human services

which provide students with the skills, and competencies needed to excel in careers in the large and growing areas of helping individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations. Touro University Worldwide’s story starts with the founding of Touro University International (TUI) by Dr. Yoram Neumann and Late Dr. Edith Neumann in 1998. Dr. Yoram, Chancellor and CEO, is one of the pioneers of online higher education. With significant knowledge of the sphere, Dr. Neumann dedicated his life for high quality online learning. Dr. Yoram Neumann developed the Robust Learning Model and its components along with Dr. Edith Neumann, the former Provost and Chief Academic Officer. The Robust Learning Model, which is a multi-factorial model based on the basic belief that successful learning outcomes depend on multiple factors employed together in a holistic approach, was the basis of the development of the online university. TUW was the first university in the world to offer a regionally accredited doctorate program online, with no residency requirements. This aspect was also beneficial to government and military students. Both founders led TUI for 11 years from 1998 to 2009 and during their time, 14,000 students graduated and the university built a catalog of more than 50,000 courses. However, in 2007, TUI was sold to a private equity group. In 2008, Dr. Bernard
