Grassroots Boating By Thomas P. Caldwell
Ryan Crawford, president of the NH Marine Trades Association, is excited about a new initiative that focuses on individual memberships to help grow boating in the Granite State. The program, GoBoatingNH, helps to promote boating through a comprehensive website geared to answer questions and make boating more enjoyable in New Hampshire. The NH Marine Trades Association, he explained, is an industry organization comprising marina operators, boat dealerships, and support firms such as dock companies and financial institutions. The GoBoatingNH program was introduced last year to expand what the organization does to the general public. “It’s to give voice to the boaters,” Crawford said. “It’s to make boating more enjoyable in New Hampshire. You can go to the website at www.goboatingnh.com and find information on rentals, buying, insurance, launching, and repairs.” The individual membership component was just introduced this year after the groundwork had been laid out with the website over the course of the past year. Crawford said the website has served to attract more dealers and they have been gaining more content as the economy improves. “It’s not just one marina; it’s all of them together. It’s nice to come together as an industry and promote boating.” He noted that, while the cruiser market is still way down nationally after the industry collapsed because of the poor economy, the opposite is the case for pontoon boats. “That market has really grown, they’re so versatile,” Crawford said. “People are looking for versatility, and this is one boat that is useful whether you want to fish, ski, cruise, or party — one boat that does it all. That cuts down on maintenance costs because you don’t need a different boat for each thing you do.” He added that, for marinas, things bottomed out in 2009 and, since then, they have been seeing a slow but consistent rebound in sales which is continuing this year. “We’re regaining our strength after a slow economic situation and it’s good to be able to do this stuff again.” He noted that the organization had to change its bylaws to allow individual memberships and, with that change, they will be able to bring in new voices to address the issues facing the boating industry.

“Most of our funding goes to a lobbyist in Concord,” Crawford said, noting that the organization follows bills in the legislature and gets the information out to members through newsletters and emails, so those affected can have a say in what happens. He noted that the NH Marine Trades Association fought House Bill 548 which would have prevented children under 12 from operating any motorized vessel, including a rowboat or canoe equipped with an electric motor. The bill also would have prevented tourists with boats and rental agencies from using or renting boats of less than 25 hp without a boating certificate, which the association felt would hurt tourism in the state. “I grew up boating; most boaters grew up boating,” Crawford said. “We want kids to be able to go out and be safe, and enjoy the waters.” He noted that New Hampshire is rated one of the safest states to boat in. Other legislation of interest to boaters includes bills to provide funding for milfoil eradication or access to the state’s waterways. “I’ve been down to the State House multiple times this year,” Crawford noted, saying that a lot of the work involves educating the legislators on the issues and emphasizing that boating is a family activity. The organization also is looking at arranging some member discounts at local marinas and providing other reasons for individuals to join GoBoatingNH. A major new initiative was to hold the first local boat show in many years, this one taking place at Gilford Hills Tennis and Athletic Facility. The majority of the participants sold boats at the show and the contacts they made resulted in leads that are still coming in, he said. “It’s great to have a local show again, right here, right next to all the marinas,” Crawford said. “The feedback from a bunch of people was that they were tired of driving all that way to attend [other] boat shows. And what we did will have an impact on other boat shows, including the ones in Milford and Boston.” He added that it worked out well using Gilford Hills, and Promoter Tim James did a great job of pulling everything together for them. The website, still under development, breaks down information into Buying a Boat, with a listing of dealerships, brands, and boat shows; Owning and Operating, which covers Insurance with future links to Towing and Trailoring, NH Boating Laws, Launching Tips, Insurance, Canvas, Maintenance and Repair Shops, and the Marine Fuel Tax Refund; Rental Agencies; Membership Information; and the Lakes Region Community College Marine Technology Program. “We want boating to be fun for everyone,” Crawford concluded. 6 • Boating on the Lakes • 2013 Edition

Concerned About E15? by Thomas P. Caldwell Controversy has been brewing over the introduction of E 1 5
fuel into the marketplace and the NH Marine Trades Association is one group that has come out strongly against its adoption. While the use of E15 fuel comes with many conditions, including a requirement that retail stations must provide at least one fueling position that offers gasoline containing no more than 10 percent ethanol, there is concern among marine dealers that E15 will become
the standard, just as E10 now is the standard for fueling stations. “For a while, we could get non-ethanol fuel from Maine, but that ended a few years ago,” said Ryan Crawford, president of the NH Marine Trades Association. “We’re currently running with E10, and that’s caused problems. Ethanol fuel attracts more moisture, and that can wreak havoc on boats. Fuel additives and maintenance help, but there are still problems, and customers don’t need [the cost of] more maintenance.” E15 fuel is a blend of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline. The federal Environmental Protection Agency, in allowing its introduction into the marketplace, set standards designed to prevent problems in engines that are not equipped to handle the higher ethanol content. Not only must there be a fueling position offering a gasoline mixture that does not exceed 10 percent ethanol; it must provide that gasoline through a dedicated hose/nozzle to ensure that no higher concentration accidentally gets through. Additionally, stations are required to affix labels on pumps dispensing E15 fuel, noting that it is for use in passenger vehicles only and that use in other vehicle engines and equipment “may violate federal law”. The EPA, relying on Department of Energy testing data and other reports, found E15 fuel to be safe for 2001 and newer light-duty motor vehicles (cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles), as well as in flex-fuel vehicles which can take up to an E85 mixture. E15 is not approved for use in any motorcycle, heavy-duty engine such Continued on page 10

as those in school buses, transit buses, and delivery trucks, or off-road vehicles such as boats and snowmobiles, as well as equipment such as lawnmowers and chain saws, and all vehicles from model year 2000 and earlier. The EPA did grant a waiver to allow fueling stations to offer E15 through a common hose for multiple fuels as long as there is a minimum transaction volume and labeling. In some cases, adjusting the ethanol content of the fuels being blended is required. For hoses dispensing E15 (and higher blend levels such as E85), the EPA said an adjustment of the ethanol content may be necessary to compensate for the higher ethanol content of the residual fuel in the hose. “In general, the blended fuel’s contents can be adjusted to compensate for the varying concentrations of ethanol and gasoline in fuel blends,” the EPA ruled. Crawford believes that providing both E10 and E15 fuel will be impractical. “A lot of fuel stations have only have three tanks, which they need for the 87-, 89-, and 91-octane fuel. They don’t have six tanks, so they won’t be keeping both E10 and E15; they will run just E15, and [because E10 won’t be available], we’ll have to run that in our tanks.” A coalition of oil companies and automakers has disputed the safety of E15 fuel in even the approved engines. Bob Greco of the American Petroleum Institute said that increasing the ethanol content from 10 to 15 percent can cause problems, including fuel system component swelling, erratic fuel level indicators, faulty check-engine lights, and failure of other parts that can lead to breakdowns. The Coordinating Research Council had found that use of E15

Ethanol also may not be as good for the environment as its advocates state. Ethanol burned in an engine produces more than twice as much ozone as the equivalent amount of gasoline. Also, as an article in The Economist states, while ethanol has been touted as boosting a fuel’s octane rating, it packs only two-thirds the energy per gallon of gasoline. As a result, motorists get fewer miles per gallon using fuel blended with ethanol than with undiluted gasoline. So, even if blended fuel is cheaper per gallon (and that is only because of US subsidies for ethanol), the overall cost of using it tends to be higher. Popular Mechanics offered information to help people understand the controversy over the use of E15, noting that ethanol is corrosive to rubber and certain metals, so it can
damage vital components. “Ethanol also attracts and bonds with water from the air, and that water can separate out inside the tank due to phase separation. If your vehicle sits for long periods between use, the moisture settles to the bottom of the tank and can potentially clog in-tank pumps and filters. Damage is also possible in fuel lines, injectors, seals, gaskets, and valve seats as well as carburetors on older engines.” That is the reason the EPA did not approve its use in boats, motorcycles, and other engines that may sit idle for long periods of time. It also is the reason that most marinas already use fuel additives in the gasoline they currently sell, with its 10 percent ethanol content. “That helps prevent issues,” said Crawford, “but you still

have problems.” Crawford would not be as worried about E15 if the boating industry were as large as the automobile industry. With the newer cars equipped to handle E15 fuel, Crawford does not think it will be worth it for the fuel distributors to carry non-ethanol or low-ethanol fuels. “The logistics wouldn’t work,” he said. Even if E10 is still available, caution is the watchword, especially if purchasing the gasoline at a blender pump, where there is one nozzle for multiple grades of gasoline. It will be necessary to purchase at least four gallons of E10 to ensure that any E15 remaining in the hose is diluted to a safe concentration in the fuel tank. Another concern, according Popular Mechanics, is that ethanol forms a brown goo when left in a fuel tank too long. That can clog fuel-system components. “Two-stroke engines,” the article goes on to say, “run hotter with an ethanol blend, which accelerates the potential damage. And ethanol can wreak havoc on fiberglass fuel tanks in older boats. Groups like the National Marine Manufacturers Association and Outdoor Power Equipment Institute have issued strong warnings to consumers to pay attention to their fuels or risk severe engine damage.” Use of a fuel stabilizer reduces the ethanol-water separation and potential gumming issues, but that adds to the expense. “The [amount] you spend to be on the water and keep your fuel system compliant, that’s a lot of money spent,” said Crawford.

Area Marinas Add New Lines & New Locations by Thomas Caldwell Whether new to New Hampshire’s waterways or looking to upgrade one’s boating experience, there are countless questions to ask and things to do in the way of preparation, and Lakes Region marinas are ready to help. From high-speed performance boats to versatile pontoon boats to aluminum fishing boats, the choices are many and the chance to check out the latest models of vessels and the boating accessories can be a fun and exciting experience. One of the best ways to get a sense of the latest trends in boating, and to see the new models and accessories, is to attend one of the many boat shows that take place in New England, or take in the special events sponsored by local marinas. Lakeport Landing Marina at 65 Gold St., Laconia, and Silver Sands Marina at 103 Weirs Rd. (Rte. 11B) Gilford are teaming up for a “Celebrating Spring” event on May 4-5. At Lakeport Landing, see the 2013 Chris Crafts and Avalons, both in the showroom and on the water. Interested patrons will even be able to take the boats out for test drives. Silver Sands features several models of MasterCraft boats. The twoday event also will offer special deals on the 2012 models still in stock as well as drawings for free gas, a boat slip, and gift certificates to the ship’s store.
Shep Brown’s Boat Basin at 31 Lovejoy Sands Rd., Meredith, which recently added Vanquish Boats to its dealership, will be among the sponsors of the 40th annual Lake Winnipesaukee Antique and Classic Boat Show, scheduled July 26-28 at the Meredith Town Docks, and the Vintage Race Boat Regatta, scheduled Sept. 12-14 in Wolfeboro. Shep Brown’s will have a Vanquish boat on display at both events. “Shep Brown’s Boat Basin is very excited to have brought Vanquish Boats into our dealership,” said Charity Littlefield. “We believe this boat line will be a great addition to Lake Winnipesaukee. ... The Vanquish offers the classic style of boat that we all love without the high maintenance of the old wooden boats.” Shep Brown’s also is adding Nautical North Wooden Charts & Maps to the Ship Store at its on-the-water facility in Meredith. Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, Boston Harbor, Fenway Park, and Cape Cod are featured on wall charts, trays, and clocks. Cruising the Big Lake for Culinary Treats Let’s admit it: Part of the fun of having a boat is to show it off to friends and have it noticed by strangers. A great way to attract attention — to see and be seen — is to pull up to a dockside restaurant and enjoy a meal while mingling with the others who have assembled for a delicious meal. Of course, spending a day on the water is enough in itself to build up an appetite. If not ready for a full-course meal, it’s still wonderful to get to shore and find even light fare and drinks during a break or to mark the end of a beautiful summer’s day. There is no end of places to stop while boating on the Big Lake. Among the most convenient is the Bayside Grill & Tavern at 51 Mill St., Wolfeboro. Offering private dock space just outside, the restaurant also has a waterfront patio and a main dining room that can accommodate up to 60 people. If the private dock is full, the Bayside is within walking distance of the Wolfeboro Town Docks. Serving lunch and dinner, the atmosphere is casually
elegant. Call 515-1002 for more information. Also close to docking is Straw Cellar Fudge and Brick Oven Pizza, located off Front Bay at 11 Railroad Ave., Wolfeboro. Even if not stopping by for the thin-crust, hand-tossed, wood-fired pizza or the sandwiches and salads, it’s worth a stop for the fudge alone. Best of all, they deliver to the Wolfeboro Town Docks, so one can stay on the boat and still enjoy a great pizza. Call 707-1941. Another place to dock and stay is the Wolfeboro Inn at 90 N. Main St. The inn has docking for its guests on a firstcome, first-served basis. There is outside dining with lake views and the inn offers breakfasts, lunches, and dinners in Wolfe’s Tavern. Call 569-3016. Boat docking also is available at the Wolfetrap Grill and Raw Bar, 19 Bay St., Wolfeboro. Specializing in seafood, the restaurant has inside and outside seating. Call 569-1047. For great waterfront dining at lunch and dinner, Jo Green’s Garden Café Continued on page 20

Vintage Race Boat Regatta Returns for 2013 During the 2013 season, the New Hampshire Boat Museum will host an exhibit on the history of motorboat racing on Lake Winnipesaukee. Starting in the 1920s, racing was held on the Lake thrilling thousands of spectators. Today, the New Hampshire Boat Museum continues that tradition with their biennial Vintage Race Boat Regatta. This year’s Regatta will be held September 13 and 14th at the Wolfeboro town docks. Over 60 race boats will run demonstration laps on the race course. The event is free and open to the public. To learn more about the Regatta, visit the Boat Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org. In honor of the 2013 Regatta, the New Hampshire Boat Museum will exhibit a number of vintage race boats dating from the late 1920s through the early 1960s.

Hacker Gold Cup Hydroplane This boat, “Scotty” is a 1929 28’ Gold Cup hydroplane, designed and built by famous naval architect and builder, John Hacker at his boat yard in Clemmens, Michigan. Custom constructed for Sam Dunsford of Tuftonboro Neck, it was shipped by rail to Lakeport, NH where it was launched and towed to his estate on Lake Winnipesaukee and fitted with a Packard 6 cylinder Gold Cup engine of 625 cubic inches. With a three step hull design it ran in several events but its performance was unsatisfactory to Dunsford, hence in 1930 it was stored until his death in 1958. After changing hands several times, it was restored to its original configuration and has been displayed and run in several vintage raceboat events including Wolfeboro. The boat is on loan to the Museum from Mark Howard. Boyd Martin Step Hydroplane This boat, called “The Bullet Senior”, dates from 1928 and was manufactured by the Boyd Martin Boat Company of Delphi, Indiana. These outboard step hydroplanes were among the “winningest” hydroplanes of the era. One of these hydroplanes won the coveted General Dawes Trophy in 1929. Boyd Martin hydroplanes have certain unusual features including the venturies located in the step, which was designed to direct air under the aft hull bottom. This increased their speed. The Boyd Martin on display at the Boat Museum is in its unrestored as-raced condition with the original kneeling cushion and hardware. It is powered by a 1928 Elto Speedster motor. The boat is on loan to the Museum from Ted Valpey. Century Cyclone This boat is a replica of a 1931 12’ Century Cyclone. These stepped hull hydroplanes were produced by Century for racing from 1927 through 1939. During this time period, the Century Cyclones won the lion’s share of outboard racing events throughout the nation. Named the “Oh My IV”, this Cyclone has mahogany planked construction with canvas decks and is powered by a 1940s era Evindrude 4-60 “Speedifour racing mo-

tor”. Cyclones typically ranged in size from 10’6” to 12’8” depending on the racing class. The boat is on loan to the Museum from Mark Mason. Pigeon Race Boat This 13’ 3-Star Pigeon race boat is one of the stars of the Boat Museum’s collection. Built in 1928, the boat is shown in its original, asraced condition. The Pigeon Boat has a local connection and history. It was owned and raced by Elbridge Robie and it won the 1928 Lake Winnipesaukee Outboard Marathon. After its racing days were over, the boat was used continuously by the Robie and Walker families on Lake Wentworth through the early 2000s. After the death of Bruce Walker (Elbridge Robie’s stepson) the Pigeon was donated to the Museum by his widow, Dianne Walker. Roman Candle This 1961 “266 class” 3-point hydroplane named Roman Candle is in fully restored as-raced condition. The hydroplane has an extensive racing history. Most recently, the boat has thrilled spectators at the New
Hampshire Boat Museum’s 2009 and 2011 Regattas on Lake Winnipesaukee. The hydroplane is powered by a fuel injected 302 cubic inch engine. The boat will be on loan to the Boat Museum for the race boat exhibit, but will be removed for the 2013 Regatta to race again. Once the Regatta is over, it will return to the Boat Museum for exhibition.

The boat is on loan from its owner Gerry Davidson. Mini-Max Hydroplane Young boys often caught race boat fever and wanted to go fast on lakes in their own hydroplanes. The magazine Popular Science fueled that interest by providing a plan for an 8’ Mini-Max Hydroplane. The Boat Museum has one on display that was made in the early sixties. It is powered by a 10+ horsepower Mercury Hurricane motor. The boat has all its period-correct hardware. The Mini-Max was built locally and it has spent its life providing endless fun on Lake Wentworth. On loan from Zeke Bly. The New Hampshire Boat Museum will be open daily for the 2013 season from May 24 - October 14. The hours are Monday - Saturday, 10:00 - 4:00 and Sunday, noon - 4:00. The museum is located at 399 Center Street/Rt. 28 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. For more information visit the museum’s website at www.nhbm.org.

The Clean Routine for Boaters The BoatU.S. Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that helps boaters be safer and better stewards of the environment. Stash the Trash 1. Reduce the amount of packaging and plastic taken aboard. 2. Put a sturdy trash container on the boat. 3. Keep all trash on board for disposal or recycling onshore. 4. Establish a boat rule that no trash gets thrown overboard – even cigarette butts. 5. Leave the water and marina cleaner than it was found – carefully pick up trash left by others.

The Scoop on Poop 6. Use onshore restrooms before leaving the shore. 7. Keep untreated sewage out of all waters. 8. Heads should be equipped with a USCG-approved Marine Sanitation Device: Type I, II or III. 9. Use enzyme deodorizers for holding tanks and portable toilets. Stop the Drops 10. Know how much fuel the tanks hold and don’t top off! 11. Make sure anyone fueling the boat knows which deck fill is for fuel. 12. Use oil absorbent pads to catch drips while handing the fuel nozzle between the dock and the boat. 13. Fill up trailerboats’ gas tanks while the boat is on the trailer, not in the water. Maintain the Boat 14. Regularly scrub the decks with fresh water and a brush to reduce the need to use heavy cleaners. 15. Try to do large cleaning and maintenance jobs while the boat is out of the water. 16. Ask the marina or underwater diver to recycle used zincs. 17. Use a hard (non-ablative) anti-fouling paint if the boat bottom will be scrubbed while in the water. So Many Fish, So Little Time 18. Keep only those fish that will be eaten the day of the catch. 19. Practice catch-and-release techniques to ensure the survival of those fish tossed back. 20. Use circle hooks. 21. Wet hands or gloves before handling a fish to be released.

Puffing Along in the Puffin III By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper
Everyone grows up with a toy, a book or special memento they always remember fondly. For Dave Closson, that special something is the Puffin. If one assumed the Puffin was a stuffed animal version of the puffin bird, it would be an incorrect assumption. The Puffin I was a beautiful wooden boat owned by Dave’s grandfather and used summers on Squam Lake. “My grandfather owned the original Puffin (there have been two others, the Puffin II and Dave’s current boat, the Puffin III). He attended Dartmouth before World War I and discovered and fell in love with the Squam Lake area while a student in college,” Dave explains. “After college, he came back to the Holderness area and built a summer home. My father spent summers at the cottage and enjoyed riding in the Puffin, which was purchased
in 1928 after it was built in New York by the Fay & Bowen Boat Company.” (After purchase, the Puffin was shipped to Ashland, NH by rail then on to Squam Lake by truck. It has remained on Squam Lake with the Closson family serving a number of generations.) Dave also spent summers as a child on Squam Lake and remembers riding in the Puffin II, the next generation of the wooden boat beloved in his family. As an adult, Dave lived and worked in New Jersey, but he longed for the Squam area. Eventually he moved permanently to Holderness due to his love of the lake. After settling year-round in the Squam area, Dave spent summers enjoying the lake on the Puffin III. Built of solid mahogany, the Puffin III has a unique hull design that features a long fore deck and round bottom. The

round bottom allows the Puffin to slice through rather than skim across the water, making for a very smooth, comfortable ride. Dave also loves sailing, and says he has been an ardent sailor for quite some time. “I used to race my sailboat on Squam every Sunday in the lightening class,” he says. The Puffin is obviously Dave’s first love and he comments it holds a special place with him because it is a family heirloom. “It’s been in my family for three generations and I wouldn’t want to give it up. It is distinctive and well known on Squam Lake.” One thing the Puffin is certainly known for is providing transportation for brides and wedding parties to Church Island on Squam. Many couples are married at the outdoor island chapel each summer; due to its unusual location, boats are needed to get guests to and from the site. “Someone suggested to me, in about 2004, that it would be a great way for brides to arrive and depart their Church Island weddings. Doing wedding charters helps pay for the upkeep of the boat,” Dave says. A ride aboard the chartered Puffin is a unique and gorgeous way for brides to arrive and depart their wedding ceremony. “It is a distinctive way for brides to reach Church Island. It is sort of like the bride’s stretch limo on water!” Dave laughs. Once the couple has booked the Puffin III for their wedding ceremony, Dave takes them out well before the wedding day so they can get a feel for the boat and the lake. The day of the ceremony, the couple is treated to chilled champagne to enjoy a toast on their return trip after the ceremony. Although the boat is beautiful, even beauty can need a little help from time to time. A few years ago, some of the boat’s planks were showing rot, so Dave hired his nephew to do boat restoration. During a winter season when the boat was out of the water, the Puffin III received a complete restoration by Owl Brook Boatworks of Sandwich, NH. Today the Puffin sports a beautiful mahogany finish, sparkling brass fittings and a hand carved Puffin mounted on her bow.
“The Puffin looks brand new now,” Dave says. “It needed restoration, and we also put in a new engine. It now does 30 miles per hour, which is fast enough for Squam Lake. This lake is not commercialized and it isn’t necessary for the Puffin to reach high speeds.” With room for five passengers, the Puffin III is also used for twohour Squam Lake tours. Visitors love Dave’s tour of Squam, where he points out the shoreline, the mountains and, inevitably, some of the spots where filming of the famous movie On Golden Pond took place. Dave also shows bald eagle nesting spots, and he points out loons in their natural environment as well as cozy coves and hidden areas. The Puffin is a well-recognized boat on Squam Lake and it has even been featured on WMUR television’s Chronicle. The “laker type” boat is certainly recognizable with a long mahogany hull and its ability to slice through windy, choppy waters as well as tranquil lake conditions on a peaceful summer’s day. The Puffin was given its unusual name, Dave surmises, many years ago by his grandfather. Back then, the original Puffin probably emitted a “puff, puff, puff” noise somewhat like a puffin. Dave has no plans to sell the Puffin or stop doing charters. Clearly, he loves the head-turning attention the beautiful boat receives each time he does a charter or transports a bride to a Church Island wedding. If you happen to spot a beautiful wooden boat on Squam Lake between late June and October, it is probably the Puffin III taking a bride and wedding party to or from Church Island. “My nieces and nephews love the boat and I will keep it in the family,” he says. While Dave Closson may have grown up, like most of us, with a beloved toy he remembers fondly, the Puffin will always hold a special place in his heart. (For information on chartering the Puffin III, visit www.squamweddingcharter.com.)

PWC Operating Rules • Wear a personal floatation device (PFD). All riders must wear a Coast Guard-approved PFD that is suitable for PWC use. • Wear protective clothing. Severe internal injuries can occur if water is forced into body cavities as a result of falling into the water or being near the jet thrust nozzle. All riders must wear a wet suit bottom or clothing that provides equivalent protection (see Owner’s Manual). Footwear, gloves, and goggles/glasses are recommended. • Know boating laws. In New Hampshire a PWC operator must be 16 years of age or older. • Attach engine shut-off cord (lanyard) to wrist and keep it free from the handlebars so that the engine stops if the operator falls off. After riding, remove cord from PWC to avoid unauthorized use by children or others. • Ride within your limits and avoid aggressive maneuvers to reduce the risk of loss of control, ejection, and collision. A PWC is a high performance boat – not a toy. Sharp turns or jumping wakes or waves can increase the risk of back/spinal injury (paralysis), facial injuries, and broken legs, ankles, and other bones. Do not jump wakes or waves. • Do not apply throttle when anyone is at rear of PWC—turn the engine off. Water and/or debris exiting jet thrust nozzle can cause severe injury. • Keep away from intake grate while engine is on. Items such as long hair, loose clothing, or PFD straps can become entangled in moving parts resulting in severe injury or drowning. • Never ride after consuming drugs or alcohol.
• Right of way. Follow basic boating rules. Sailboats (under sail), large commercial vessels, and fishing vessels always have the right of way. Stay to the right when approaching an oncoming craft, so that it passes on your left side. When overtaking another boat, pass on the right or left, but stay clear. If you’re about to cross paths with another boat, the craft on the right has the right of way. Slow down to let the boat continue its course, then pass behind it. Even when you are sure you have the right of way, a good safety rule is to never insist on it. Always ride defensively. • Wake crossing. If your course takes you across the wake of another boat, make sure your visibility is not obstructed by that boat. Stay far enough behind it so that you can see if other traffic is coming your way. • Operating speed. Follow local regulations regarding speed limits, whether posted or not. In congested areas, lower your speed. • Passengers and guests. Never carry more than the maximum passenger load specified for your craft. If you loan your craft to a friend, make sure he or she is of legal age, knows how to operate your craft, and is fully aware of these responsible boating rules. You are responsible when you loan out your PWC. • Riding position. Passengers should hold on to the person in front of them or the handhold while keeping both feet on the deck for balance during operation or they can lose balance and be injured. Never allow a passenger to ride in front of the operator. • Maintenance. Check your craft internally and externally before you get on the water. Make sure the throttle and all switches are working properly, that fuel and battery lines are properly connected, that no fuel is leaking, and that cables and steering are functioning.
