four seasons of bliss WINTER ~ cozy and cold
While winter’s cold reliably provides a deep white blanket for all those energetic snow activities, there are plenty of places to cozy up around a warm fireplace, a tasty meal, or treating your sore muscles to a massage. You’ll find every conceivable winter recreation here from miles of maintained snow mobile trails, groomed ski hills, and untouched woods for bushwhacking in your snow shoes. The lakes and ponds transform into glistening mirrors of ice, luring fishermen, skaters, and cross country skiers. Hiking trails transform into multi-purpose byways - you may even get to see a sled dog race in action!
Winter time is holiday season and most of our towns celebrate with traditional concerts and open-house craft fairs where you’ll find gifts for everyone on your list, and have the added pleasure of meeting the person who made it. And there’s fun for all the family at events like the Ossipee Youth Fishing Derby in February, and the Tamworth Sled Dog Race. Check it out:

Effingham
A scenic drive through Effingham today is full of surprising remnants from the past. Settlers were drawn to the area not only for its beauty but also by the powerful and abundant waters of the Ossipee River. Originally known as Leavitt’s Town after the family who settled the area, Governor Benning Wentworth granted the land in 1749 and renamed it after the Earl of Effingham to whom he was related by marriage. Effingham incorporated in 1778, and later in 1831, the section north of Ossipee River incorporated separately as the town of Freedom. Once the Effingham Falls were harnessed to generate electricity in 1820, the town became a prosperous and industrious community supported by grist and saw mills, wool and carriage factories, and attracting many supporting small businesses and services into the area.
Must see… The town is made up of four distinct districts or villages, Effingham Falls, Lord’s Hill, Center Effingham (Drake’s Corner) and South Effingham, best viewed by taking a leisurely drive along Route 153.
Bounded by lakes to the north and south, the area is crisscrossed with rivers and brooks, and dominated in the center by the crests of Welch Top, Hanson Top and Green Mountain. Effingham Falls sits at the intersection of R25 and R153 and takes its name from the gushing falls in the Ossipee River. Stop by the farm stand in season and select a few fresh items for a picnic by the river, followed by a leisure browse around the antique store. Center Effingham sits atop a hill crowned by an imposing Italianate building dating back to 1861. Originally built to house the New England Masonic Charitable Institute along with meeting rooms for the Masonic Lodge, it has also served as the town hall and today houses the Effingham Library. It is well worth a tour for its beautifully preserved architectural features and trompe l’oeuil paintings. Also located within walking distance are the Effingham Historical Society building (formerly Drake’s Store), the Effingham Preservation building (formerly Effingham Grange), and the Baptist Church.
To the north is the Lord’s Hill district of Effingham, elegantly displaying an extraordinary collection of grand, stately old homes and historic buildings including Squire

It was in the Lord’s Hill district of Effingham in 1830, that James W. Bradbury, later Senator for Maine, took charge of the Effingham Union Academy Building (1819) and established the First Normal School – the first college of its kind for training teachers. Freedom
Back in 1831 when a conflict of culture and religion arose in the town of North Effingham between the settlers from Maine and those from the New Hampshire seacoast, some of the townspeople broke “free” and formed a community of their own north of the Ossipee River. In 1832 the new town was named Freedom, and state legislature enacted this change under the leadership of future American president, Franklin Pierce. A visit to the town’s Historical Society and Museum located in Allard House is a great way to get a sense of what to do and see in this charming village that doubles in size over summer when children from all over the country settle into the many camps located on the shores of Lake Ossipee and the surrounding area. Simply put, Freedom is one of those places that is best enjoyed by taking a leisurely stroll along the downtown streets and surrounds that are lined with historic homes and buildings, galleries, a museum, an old fashioned country store, antique shops, and B&B’s.

Madison
Named in honor of President James Madison and incorporated in 1852, this area was one of the first to have land grants set aside for soldiers who had survived the French and Indian War. In its early years, farming, lumbering and mining for zinc, lead, silver and iron ore were the town’s main enterprises. Madison Corner, as it was once known, prospered because it was on a major stagecoach route connecting Boston and other seacoast towns with the White Mountains. Then in 1875, a railroad was completed along the shores of Silver Lake and many new businesses opened to accommodate the growing tourist trade which is still a prominent part of Madison’s economy today with a popular year-round resort and winter ski area. Joy Farm in Madison, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the summer home to E.E. Cummings, one of the most widely read and well known American poets of the nineteenth century. While he wrote of enduring themes such as love, childhood and nature, his style was anything but traditional. Believing in “the triumph of the individual over conformity” he ignored conventional grammatical rules in favor of a more dynamic use of language and even invented words. Silver Lake, located at the town’s heart, is a haven for boating, fishing, and swimming, but many visitors are drawn to explore Madison Boulder. This large glacial erratic left behind from a melting glacier measures a surprisingly impressive 37 feet in length and weighs 4,660 tons. It’s located off Route 113 heading north to Conway.

Back in 1926, local residents John and Millie Burke gifted 105 acres of land in the southern part of Madison to the town for $1 to be put aside for conservation. The gift was the first such gift to a town in the state of New Hampshire. Today it is known as Burke Town Forest.
Genuinely happy to help you with all of your banking needs.

Ossipee
Must see‌.
Originally known as Wigwam Village, and then New Garden, ultimately the town was named for the indigenous Ossipee people, one of the twelve Algonquian tribes, and incorporated in 1785. Remains can still be seen today of what was one of the largest forts in New England, built by Captain John Lovewell as protection against the well-documented skirmishes between the Europeans and native Americans. Early settlers logged the land for its tall timbers and found the land suitable for farming wheat and potatoes, and for raising cattle. By 1859 Ossipee had grown large enough to support twelve sawmills, five gristmills, twelve clapboard and shingle mills, a bedstead factory, door factory, sash and blind factory, a paper mill, and four tanneries. The Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad reached Center Ossipee by 1875 bringing commerce and tourists, and shaping the area into a vacation wonderland which is now enjoyed year-round. Today, the town is a growing, thriving area made up of five small villages scattered throughout the hills: Center Ossipee, Granite, Ossipee Corners, Water Village, and West Ossipee. It is also home to the county seat for Carroll County. Shops filled with local crafts, arts, foods, and antiques dot the country roads, as do signs for the ubiquitous Yankee past time of yard or barn sales. Festivals, fairs, parades and performances focusing on the celebration of traditions, families, history and the great outdoors fill the calendar four seasons of the year. A bounty of mountains, lakes, rivers and trails provides access to year round recreation in Ossipee, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to fish, swim, kayak, boat, hike, snow shoe and cross country ski. Snowmobiling is another popular sport in the area with miles of trails crisscrossing the area, connecting to other parts of the state, New England and up into Canada.

Drawn by the beauty of the land and vistas, the area has been a muse to many notable artists of all genres still connected today to the homesteading skills of the first Yankee settlers. Artists, blacksmiths, furniture makers, musicians, metalworkers, farmers – most beckoning with a welcoming sign hung out front – invite you and your curiosity in for a memorable story. Must do…. Hikes, Walks, Bike Rides & Nature Areas There are 17 listed peaks to hike in the Sandwich area, some of the more notable include: Sandwich Mountain or Dome, Mt Israel, and Mt Tripyramid.
Geographically one of the largest towns in New Hampshire, the villages of Center and North Sandwich, Whiteface and Sandwich nestle in rolling pastoral countryside at the foot of the Sandwich Mountain Range, gentle ambassadors at the gateway to the wilder territory of the White Mountain National Forest. Chartered in 1763, Sandwich was named in honor of John Montagu, fourth earl of Sandwich, and as anyone who has read The Road Through Sandwich Notch knows, by the mid 1800’s it was a bustling town of farms, businesses and homes with a population of around 2,700. However, despite its beauty and natural resources, for the most part the land was considered inaccessible, and so people eventually left for the cities and the lure of less challenging farmland out west. To the south sits Squam Lake, the state’s second largest, and notable as the location for the film On Golden Pond. The pristine, spring fed lake is home to generations of vacationing families drawn to reconnecting with nostalgic traditions and activities of days gone by, as well as families of loons and eagles. To the north the Sandwich Mountain Range and Wilderness Area are dotted with hiking trails up, over and around bold peaks and long ridgelines traversed by a patchwork of valleys hiding gushing streams and waterfalls. Many of these trails date back to the early settlers and exude a sense of history and place. 32

our towns
Tamworth Tamworth’s history is indelibly connected to the indigenous Pequaket and Ossipee peoples by the legend surrounding Mount Chocorua. The unusually shaped silhouette dominates the town and it is arguably the most photographed mountain in the country. Granted in 1766 by Governor Benning Wentworth, the town was named after his close friend the Viscount Tamworth. Today it comprises the five picturesque villages of Chocorua, South Tamworth, Tamworth, Whittier and Wonalancet, bounded by the White Mountains National Forest to the north and the White Lake State Park to the south east.
Initially attracted by the rewards from logging, settlers soon turned Tamworth into a thriving pastoral community of farms along with saw, shingle and turning mills. Schools, churches, blacksmiths, millers, shoemakers, storekeepers, furniture makers and coopers soon followed. But the population declined over the years as the west opened up, and Tamworth’s economic future became linked to the spectacular natural beauty found in its mountains, lakes, forests, streams and valleys that brought visitors to the area for summer vacations, fall leaf peeping, winter skiing and spring fishing. Thanks to the influence of Pastor Samuel Hiddens in the 1770’s, many cultural activities were introduced that are perpetuated today in a surprising abundance of artistic, literary and religious events, organizations and buildings. Tamworth is home to The Barnstormers Theatre, the longestrunning professional summer theater in the country. Also to the Remick Museum, an art gallery, 2 libraries, 6 churches, a very active arts council and historical society, and many area resident authors, poets and artists. Well known people associated with Tamworth include President Grover Cleveland, John Greenleaf Whittier, William James and Lucy Larcom.
Must see…
A stroll through the villages of Tamworth and Chocorua is delightful with small antique and craft shops, galleries, country stores, ice cream and coffee shops, and artist studios. While Whittier, Wonalancet and South Tamworth are much smaller, they still manage to surprise with spectacular views and friendly, locally run businesses. Tamworth Farmers Market: Summer mornings from 9am to noon at the Tamworth Unitarian Church. Winter schedule online. The Remick Museum, Tamworth: a country doctor museum and working farm with a calendar full of year-round events and programs. The Barnstormers, Tamworth: take in a theater performance during July and August. The theater season is often extended with performances put on in the venue by other local arts organizations. Farmers market every Saturday in Tamworth Village through the summer and every other Saturday during the rest of the year.

Take a scenic drive
This gem of a loop can be driven in a day (approximately 4 hours of driving), but with so much to see, and so many of those quintessential roads “less traveled” to side track off on to, you won’t regret taking more time and enjoying a night or two in one of the timeless villages along the way. Leave your GPS at home and get yourself a good topographical map that shows hidden gems of history tucked away in the valleys and mountains of this bucolic landscape including covered bridges, old meeting houses and churches, country stores and taverns, artisan studios, and generational farmsteads. Take time out to read the historic markers, admire the vistas, explore the many nature areas, and take lots of photos. You’ll find life peacefully slowing down as you’re drawn into the many places to eat home-made ice cream, sample fresh produce, pick 40
seasonal fruits, pet animals, and shop for something locally made. Start off at the crossroads in the little village of Ossipee and take Old Granite Road, crossing over the intersection of R16 to Granite (4 miles). Continue on Granite Road to Province Lake (5 miles) and turn left on R153 heading north, past Province Lake, to explore the villages of South Effingham, Center Effingham and the historic Lord’s Hill district, Effingham (15 miles) and eventually coming to a t-intersection with R25 where your turn left (5 miles). Follow R25 for about 3 miles and then turn right on to R153 N, crossing over the Ossipee River at Effingham Falls. Continue and take a right on Freedom Village Road, leading you into the center of Freedom (5 miles). From the central crossroads, take a left onto Cushing Corner Rd and

reconnect with R153 heading north (2.5 miles). Along the way you’ll pass Purity Lake in East Madison and the King Pine Ski area, eventually arriving in Eaton on the shore of Crystal Lake (4 miles). Take a left here onto Glines Hill Road which turns into Moony Mountain Road and follow to the t-intersection with R113 (4 miles). Turning right at the t-intersection on R113 you can make a side trip to the Madison Boulder Natural Area, about 2.5 miles up on your left. Return to R113 and head south to Madison. Continue on R113 S to Silver Lake and on to Chocorua at the intersection with R16 (6 miles). Turning right at the intersection with R16 you can make a side trip to Lake Chocorua (2 miles) with its awesome view of Mount Chocorua. Return south on R16 to Chocorua and turn right on to R113 W to Tamworth (4 miles). Take R113A north (aka Chinook Trail) out

of Tamworth following in a big, beautiful loop through Wonalancet (7 miles) to North Sandwich (7 miles) and Center Sandwich (4 miles) where you’ll join R109S towards Sandwich (2 miles). Here, take a left onto Little Pond Road until in joins R25 and turn left onto this towards South Tamworth and West Ossipee on R16 (13 miles). Head south on R16 and take a detour into Center Ossipee (6 miles) before rejoining R16 S back to your starting point in Ossipee (6 miles).

Elevation: 1883’ Elevation gain: 1400 cumulative Rating: moderate Views: excellent from the fire tower Distance: approx 3 miles Hiking time: approx 3 hours return trip
To the east of Lake Ossipee and near the Maine border rises the solitary Green Mountain located in Effingham. Under the care of The Society for the Preservation of New Hampshire Forests since 2007, the trails are clearly blazed and a kiosk is located at the Dearborn trailhead. It is somewhat off the beaten hiking trail for central New Hampshire, but it’s hard to beat as a moderate hike with rewarding views. The most popular trail is the High Watch, from the north - about a 3-mile round-trip with 1,200 feet of elevation gain. The trees provide welcome shade during the summer months, but preclude views before the summit. An alternative is the Dearborn, from the SE - just a little longer and more elevation but a lovely walk through open hardwoods, with some ledges higher up. The Libby Trail is an unmarked woods trail that rises from the mountain’s southern flank. The trail is covered with rubble so footing can be challenging. While Green Mountain’s summit doesn’t provide much of a view, a short climb up the fire tower provides an unimpeded 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and lakes, and on a clear day, out to the coast in the southeast and the White Mountains in the northwest. From the summit there is a 0.4 mile spur trail to an adjacent peak, Hanson Top, which has excellent views from an exposed ledge. More information: www.forestsociety.org 42

High Watch: At the junction of NH 25 and NH 153 (northbound), near Effingham Falls, take Green Mountain Road south for 1.2 miles, then turn left on High Watch Road and follow to the end, just beyond the Lakeview Rehabilitation Center. Dearborn and Libby: From NH 153 just north of Effingham Village, take Hobbs Road west 1.2 miles to parking area with kiosk on right. Closer to the trailhead, Hobbs becomes a class V road.

Ossipee Pine Barren
A trail leading from the Camp Calumet Center parking area in Ossipee up to Jackman Ridge offers excellent views of the pine barrens, the Ossipee Mountains, and Ossipee Lake. Trails off Leadmine Road in Madison provide access to Cook’s Pond and Cook’s River along with an interesting sandy esker. More information: www.nature.org
Getting there:
From the junction of Route 16 and Route 41 in Ossipee, follow route 41 north for approximately 2 miles. The entrance to the preserve will be on the right side of the road. Pull into the entrance to access the parking area, preserve kiosk and trailheads.
Pine barrens are a globally rare forest type, and one of the state’s most endangered landscapes. They were shaped over ten thousand years ago when retreating ice age glaciers left behind a broad, deep sandy outwash plain too dry and nutrient poor to support much life. Over time, a forest of pitch pine and scrub oak rejuvenated, and today this unique habitat supports a diversity of uncommon wildlife, including nearly two dozen threatened and endangered moths and butterflies, and several declining bird species like whip-poor-wills. The pine barrens ecosystem of Ossipee, Madison, Freedom, and Tamworth is the last relatively large and intact example in our state, providing 7.5 miles of easy to moderate hiking trails to explore: The 1.3 mile Pine Barrens Loop begins at the preserve parking area along Route 41 in Madison and offers an easy excursion through classic pitch pine and scrub oak barrens. The 3.2 mile West Branch Trail is a popular snowmobile trail that begins in Silver Lake on East Shore Drive just across from the boat access on the south end of the lake, follows the West Branch, and traverses through pitch pine and hardwood forests before ending at the Camp Calumet Conference Center. 44

Golf Tournament Annual Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fundraiser
During the fourteen summers, the GACC has held an extremely popular scholarship golf tournament at the Indian Mound Golf Club in Center Ossipee. The main tournament goal is to raise money for scholarships that are distributed to local area students entering college in the fall of each year. In 2014, over $9000 was awarded in scholarships. We want to extend our thank you to our major sponsors for 2014 included: Indian Mound Golf Course, River’s Edge Grille & Tavern, Costantino Real Estate, Eastern Propane & Oil, Northway Bank, Clean Cut Construction, Exit Realty, and to the volunteers. Please join us for our 15th Annual Golf Tournament, August 28, 2015.
expos
Each business quarter, The Chamber hosts a ‘Business to Business Expo”, sponsored by 5-6 of our members, and catered by one of our member restaurants/inns. The BOD felt it more productive to offer fewer, better-quality affairs, while continuing to provide the same valuable networking opportunities afforded by the old after hour’s format. This newly adopted initiative has added significant benefits to our membership…. • Multiple owners can now showcase their businesses by sponsoring an event. • With many people now vested in the success of the event, better attendance and more participation occur. • Because of increased attendance, better networking opportunities have been created for our members.
There is now a buzz within the organization that a GOACC event should not be missed. So, if you would like a chance to “meet and greet” with the business leaders here in the Greater Ossipee Area, check out the schedule and come join us at our next Quarterly Business Expo!

Annual Dinner and Membership Meeting
Each October the “GOACC Family” meets to enjoy a night of celebration and awards, as well as to plan for the upcoming year. This annual dinner is a time to come together as a group in an effort to support business, community, and to recognize our most valued and active members. Every year, the Board of Directors nominates and gives an award to both the ‘business’ and the ‘business owner(s)’ of the year. Support of the organization, as well as their leadership shown within the business community, are keys to these honorary awards. All GOACC members are encouraged to attend this annual meeting. The member support is a key factor in voting for new board members, deciding on new initiatives, approving the annual budget, and making beneficial by-law changes. This is your opportunity to be both seen and heard.
