Sculptures Arriving For Downtown Meredith Attraction By Thomas P. Caldwell Roger DiTarando and his wife, Jan, of Vernon CT were at Hesky Park in Meredith on Father’s Day to supervise the installation of Roger’s three heron sculptures in the water adjacent to Bay Point. The birds, weighing between 50 and 75 pounds, were positioned in shallow water where they will remain as long as it stays unfrozen. The new installation is part of the Meredith Sculpture Walk, which has seen the recent installation of several new pieces which are drawing attention to the new exhibit. The Greater Meredith Program hopes to have all the sculptures in place by mid-July and has set a date of July 28 for the opening ceremony and walk. All of the sculptures on the walking tour are on loan by the artists for a period of 12 to 15 months, after which they will be rotated out so new pieces can be added. Bev Lapham, a director whose wife, Liz, serves as executive director of the Greater Meredith Program, said artists had submitted around 50 pieces for consideration, and a jury reviewing the works selected 24 for the initial installation at high-visibility locations along Main Street, on the grounds of the Mill Falls complex, and in Hesky and Scenic parks. Bev, along with Sandy Sullivan, came up with the idea of a sculpture walk as an extension of the Greater Meredith Program’s creation of a small park with a couple of sculptures at the Courtyard on Main Street. Earlier this year, they pulled together a committee to plan the

sculpture walk and put out the call to sculpting groups and artists throughout New England. By mid-April, they were ready to sift through the entries. Kathryn Rolfe, another committee member, said there were some 150 responses from artists but, because the exhibit would remain outside yearround, many of them were eliminated right away. The sculptures on display would have to be suitable for the range of weather that New England offers. Liz Lapham said Paul Ristaino and Mike Faller of the Meredith Public Works Department have been especially helpful in the project, and she said the landowners also have been supportive. Bev noted that most of the

sculptures will be on land owned by the town or by the Inns at Mill Falls whose co-owner and president, Rusty McLear, has welcomed the project. Bev noted that the Greater Meredith Program has no financial stake in the exhibition. The artists can expect to gain commissions from the exposure; there are plaques with the name of each sculpture, along with the name of the artist and contact information, at each installation. Within a few weeks, the Greater Meredith Program will have a brochure listing all of the sculptures with a map showing their locations. The brochure will be available at the GMP office, local stores, the town hall, and the Inns

at Mill Falls, with the possibility of having a kiosk at the beginning of the trail. Liz also hopes to be able to offer docent tours later in the summer. For Roger DiTarando, the sculpture walk provides another way for people to see what he does. His heron display is situated in a natural setting by the park that could fool the casual viewer into thinking the birds are real. (On the day they were installed, a group of geese swimming in the lake ventured over to check out the new wildlife as soon as the people placing them there moved away.) Roger said the birds are part of a series he has created using all three methods he typically employs: The copper and bronze bodies and neck are die-formed while the details of the head and feet are created by a bronze/lost wax method. The individual feathers are layered sheet metal, and the legs are stainless steel. He explained his fascination with animals: “As a young person, I wanted to be around animals and live on a farm. That never happened, so I gravitated toward any animal.” The relationship between man and animals has been a theme he has explored through his works, which include gates, bird baths, and weathervanes as well as sculptures. Roger said his interest in art began in junior high school when he had “a fabulous teacher” who thought he had talent and encouraged him to pursue the field. He got hooked and went on to the

After college, he spent three years working at Pratt & Whitney where he was a jet engine metalsmith apprentice. “I learned all facets of welding,” he said. “Then I was able to meld the technical and artistic things together. Now I’ve been producing work for more than 35 years, full-time.” He works from a shop in his back yard and is working on an exterior gallery. He said he does not do much with commercial galleries, preferring to work, one-on-one, with his clients. His functional pieces — weathervanes, fountains, and gates — have gone to homes and museums around the world, and he also does historical and architectural restorations. The gates that he has created have taken the form of branches, Asian themes, bamboo, and bronze and copper layering. Roger’s sculptural series include goats, sheep, and spirited birds. for choice of sculpture,” Dale said. “Historically, dogs have made positive and lasting impressions with people and I hoped that my sculptures and the exhibit would do the same.” He continued, “The American Dog has proven to be my strongest and most iconic sculpture to date. The profile of the dog is very much of a mixed breed but I have had many people tell me it looks exactly like their particular breed of dog. It strikes a strong emotional pull with many clients.” Not to mention that the open bone at its center is a perfect spot for people to pose for photographs. Dale’s sculptures are in private collections in 44 states but he also has a goal of having a public sculpture in every state by 2015. Lakes Region Business Expanding Again Story by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper There was a time when every town had a butcher shop, a business run by someone who specialized in selling prime cuts of fresh meat to customers. With the advent of large grocery store chains, the corner butcher shop largely became a thing of the past. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in shopping locally and a revival of old-time businesses and skills. Along with other Mom and Pop businesses, the butcher shop has made a distinct comeback in the Lakes Region with the Wine’ing Butcher of Gilford and Meredith. The original shop opened July 4, 2006, at 28 Weirs Road in Gilford. The owners and creators of the Wine’ing Butcher are an energetic young couple, Andrew and Gretchen Arguin. “We started the business from scratch. We were looking to do something different. It made sense to start a shop in the Lakes Region because there is a large

The couple named its new shop the Wine’ing Butcher — and it was an immediate success. Customers were treated to a variety of top-notch, fresh cuts of meat, many seasoned in a variety of marinades. Barbecuing had never had it so good in the Lakes Region, and grills were firing up from one end of the lake to the other to grilled ground beef, steaks, chicken, and turkey. It wasn’t long before Andrew and Gretchen set their sights of opening a second Lakes Region location and they found a perfect spot in Meredith, on property behind the Circle K/Irving Gas Station on Route 25. The second shop has a larger floor plan and a full kitchen to allow for preparation of take-out food.

Both stores also feature a selection of desserts, from fresh-baked cookies to gourmet cheesecakes and specialty cakes, to name but a few sweet treats. “Our most popular items are steakhouse tips, twice-baked potatoes, crab cakes, marinated salmon, and shrimp, to name but a few,” Andrew said. For those in southern New Hampshire, there is good news. The Wine’ing Butcher is currently preparing two new locations to open by the beginning of July. The former Meat House butcher shops in Pembroke and Bedford recently went out of business, much to the chagrin of those who shopped for prime cuts of meat in these stores; but the Wine’ing Butcher will be stepping in to fill the need. “We will be incorporating things customers love, such as crab cakes. People have told us they want the stores to come back and we are eager to bring the Wine’ing Butcher to Pembroke and

Bedford,” Andrew said. Andrew, Gretchen, and new partners Robert Smith and Robert Smith, Jr. will be opening the stores under the Wine’ing Butcher name. The stores will use the successful Gilford and Meredith store model and Andrew says customers in southern New Hampshire just can’t wait. The two Lakes Region stores employ 15 to 20 people total and the two new stores will employ 25 to 35 people. “We are rehiring some of the Meat House employees and we are busy getting the shops ready to open,” said Andrew. Already, former Meat House customers stop by the shops to tell Andrew they are excited to have the Wine’ing Butcher coming to southern New Hampshire. For those with a big summer barbecue or party coming up in either southern New Hampshire or the Lakes Region, the Wine’ing Butcher carries everything necessary to turn a basic get-together into a gourmet grilling experience. Wine’ing Butcher locations are 81 NH Route 25 in Meredith; 28 Weirs Road in Gilford; 16 Sheep Davis Road in Pembrok;e and 254 Wallace Road in Bedford. Lakes Region Bride Magazine Celebrates 20 Years By Sarah Wright Wedding season is upon us, and where better to get married than in the beautiful surroundings of the Lakes Region of New Hampshire? Looking for creative wedding ideas for photo shoots, cakes, flowers, and gowns? Lakes Region Bride is published annually to help those who are planning a wedding with the lake and mountains as their backdrop. Kathi Caldwell-Hopper was there from the start and took the magazine to great heights over the past 20 years. I spoke to her about the magazine as well as the

bridal events that Lakes Region Bride sponsors each year. How did you enter the bridal business? I was the former editor of This Week magazine and, when the owners decided to cease publication, I found myself in need of a new job. The magazine had just published a bridal guide and it was successful. There was nothing else like it for the growing wedding market in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, so I decided, ‘Why not give it a try?’ I started small, selling all the advertising myself, writing

It offers so much for couples, from outdoor lakeside tented weddings to spectacular venues like Castle in the Clouds to rustic barn weddings that are so popular now. The area is growing and becoming a destination wedding area and we are seeing weddings starting to take place year-round vs. the former summer/fall seasonal nature of the bridal business.

Our smaller, boutique-oriented bridal events (vs. expos) are geared to allow our vendors to showcase their creativity and to chat with brides in an informal, warmer atmosphere, maybe while the bride nibbles on wedding cake or sips a signature bridal cocktail! Right now we are scheduling our bridal events for 2015 and we will be offering a new show called Brides & Brunch at the White Mountain Hotel in North Conway on Sunday, Nov. 2. We will also be at the Margate Resort in Laconia this winter and at the Common Man in Plymouth in the spring. What are the 2014 wedding trends? Barns and rustic ... it’s all about these things. If anyone had suggested that a bride get married in a rustic barn 20 years ago, I would’ve laughed and said, ‘No way!’ Today it is the norm, and what many brides want.

Twenty years ago, I was starting to see brides wanting outdoor weddings, but the tented wedding industry was just finding its way to become what it is today. I recall hearing vendors and brides talking about what sort of land they needed to put a tent on for a wedding and a lot of uncertainty about if outdoor tented weddings would work. People were afraid of the weather and ‘What if it’s cold or it rains?’ were common questions. Today, while no bride wants rain on her big day, tents can stand up to a lot: They have sides to act as walls and heaters for colder weather. Tents even have chandeliers now! In other words, a lot of the kinks in having a personalized wedding have been worked out. I hate to sound corny, but the romance and sentimentality in weddings remains the same. Perhaps with the advent of social media, wedding day videos that feature mother-and-son dances, first dances, and other emotional moments of the wedding day are out there on the web for everyone to share. Steve Taylor To Speak On Grange History June 24 Former NH Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Taylor will report on New Hampshire’s Grange Movement, Its Rise, Triumphs, and Decline during a meeting of the Gilmanton Historical Society on Tuesday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Gilmanton’s Old Town Hall on Route 140 in Gilmanton Iron Works. When the Odd Fellows designed the

Old Town Hall in 1902, they included in the design a meeting room for the Crystal Lake Grange, one of two Granges in the town at the time. The Grange developed when much of rural New Hampshire in the late 19th century was locked in a downward spiral of population decline, abandonment of farms, reversion of cleared land to

A s membership surged, the G r a n g e became a major force in Concord and its agenda aligned closely with the Progressive politics that swept the state in the early 20th century. Refreshments and social hour begin at 7 p.m. with the program beginning at 7:30. The historical society museum, located in the basement of the Old Town Hall, opens at 7 p.m. The program is free and open to the public; donations to support the work of the Gilmanton Historical Society are welcome. The historical society’s summer series takes place on the fourth Tuesday of each month, from May through September. On July 22 at 6 p.m., the historical society will offer a walking

Pat Clarke will present a program on Herman M u d g e t t , G i l m a n t o n ’s most notorious resident, on Aug. 26; and the final program, on Sept. 23, will focus on the textile workers of the Amoskeag Company. League Gallery To Offer Garden Totem Workshop Paula Barry will lead a “Design Your Own Garden Totem” workshop at the League of NH Craftsmen-Meredith Fine Crafts Gallery on Saturday, June 28. Weather-permitting, the workshop will take place outside and participants are welcome to drop in anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If the weather is uncooperative, the workshop will be inside the gallery. Over his career, his musical eclecticism distinguished him through his fiercely literate lyrics and richly diverse music. Elvis Costello was born Declan Patrick MacManus in London, England, and he grew up in Liverpool. The son of British band leader Ross MacManus, Costello took his pseudonym from Elvis Presley and his father’s stage name (Day Costello). He began performing professionally in 1969 and was a musician and/or singer in many bands around London before forming a moderately successful pub-

It is there in historic churches, whitewashed village homes, and historical reenactments, to name but a few ways we see reminders of history on an almost daily basis. Thus, the idea of keeping history alive is somewhat of a “been there, done it” notion for many people. For me, history never grows boring. I love all things historical, especially as they pertain to how real people lived and worked in the Lakes Region. My father worked his entire life in the logging/sawmill industry in New Hampshire and hearing his stories of the old days of pulling logs out of forests with draft horses seems a definite step back in time, although it was in reality less than 100 years ago. When I happened upon a website for an intriguing place called Sanborn Mills Farm in Loudon, I was immediately excited. There on my computer screen were beautiful photos on the farm’s website of an old sawmill, a millpond, and other historic buildings. “Why have I never heard of this

weekend — brilliant sunshine and warmer temperatures one minute, and seconds later, gray, ominous clouds and raindrops and a temperature nosedive. No matter the weather, Sanborn Mills Farm is informative and gorgeous at any time. To reach the farm, take Route 106 from Laconia to the Loudon area. Turn (at a set of traffic lights) from Route 106 onto Route 129. Travel about five miles to the right turn for Pittsfield Road. It is rural country roads all the way, so bring a camera for great photo opportunities. Go a few miles down the road and turn left onto Sanborn Road. It’s a dirt road from this point; but again, beautiful country. You won’t travel far before you see fields spread out before you and soon, a huge, white farmhouse with a mammoth barn in back of the house. As the road dips, you will see a pond, blacksmith shop, gristmill, and sawmill. The property is a true gem with something for everyone interested in gardening, history, or the way things were done long ago. The answer, quite simply, is that the farm has only recently been forming plans to increase the public’s awareness of all that is happening at Sanborn Mills. “I have to go there,” I also told myself after viewing the website’s photos of the huge farmhouse, the blacksmith shop, sawmill, and grist mill, and seeing the list of upcoming

farm events. After touring the property, I am here to say that, if you have an interest in water powered mills, farming, and delving into how things were done long ago, this is a must-visit place this summer or fall. New Hampshire working farm with agricultural fields and managed forests, timber-framed barns and outbuildings still in use for animals, a sawmill and a grist mill (both water-powered), and a blacksmith shop, all dating from the 1830s. The farm buildings are clustered around two dams at the outlet of Sanborn Pond and are surrounded by almost 2,000 acres of open space in conservation. Everything connected with the farm, from food to lumber, is produced onsite, based on how things were done 200 years ago. The public can learn a great deal from Sanborn Mills via

scheduled tours of all that happens, from blacksmithing to farming. Starting with the sawmill, which is modeled on an 1829 mill of that kind, there is much to see. “We take the lumber from the property and haul it out with our draft horses and oxen,” says Timothy. If things are built on the farm, the lumber used is from the property, milled at the sawmill. The demonstrations and everyday work on the farm show how to best use the land and visitors can learn from Timothy and those that work and demonstrate on-site. According to Timothy, there is a movement afoot to get away from using petroleum-

based equipment and a return to using water-powered and animal-powered equipment. The farm is a great place to learn how to use oxen for work purposes rather than petroleumpowered equipment. The old machinery in the mill building harkens back to a slowerpaced time. There aren’t many sawyers left around these days but at one time those men were the skilled artisans who could look at a piece of lumber or a log and think what purpose it would best serve. For those with an interest in old sawmills and lumber, this is the

The water-powered gristmill at Sanborn Mills Farm is in an 1830s building and corn and other products are ground on-site using equipment from the 1800s. As with every other piece of equipment or job on the farm, skilled workmen are doing the job and sharing the process with visitors. The blacksmith shop is the place for summer workshops in the teaching studio. A cross section of students from all walks of life comes to the farm to learn blacksmithing skills. The common denominator is that they all wish to learn about the old-fashioned art of blacksmithing. In the fields, the old way of planting is adhered to and the gardens produce a large variety of vegetables. If you have ever wanted to see garden soil tilled for planting the old way, this is the

place to be and to have your questions answered. Obviously, using old-time farming and milling equipment slows things down, but that really is the point of living and working at Sanborn Mills Farm. “We have a responsibility to share what we know and to see that the knowledge continues into future generations,” says Timothy. He says that, if programs and activities stay within the framework of the farm’s mission statement, the sky is the limit as to what can be offered. That mission statement says Sanborn Mills Farm is a place for people to learn how to work the land in ways that are sustainable and self-renewing. Using the model of a traditional New England diversified working farm (agricultural fields, managed forests, timber-framed barns for animals, sawmill, grist mill and blacksmith shop), the farm serves as a place to apply the lessons learned from the past to current needs for sustainability and community. With that goal in mind, the huge

barn at Sanborn Mills Farm is being renovated to turn the basement level into a commercial kitchen for farm workshops and events. The main floor of the barn will house classes to teach folklore and for demonstration studios. Other barn space will be renovated for use as overnight bunkhouse quarters for those taking multiple-day workshops. During the summer and fall months, there are many workshops at the farm (visit www.sanbornmills.org for a complete list of events by month.) A sampling of workshops includes Open Forge, Beginning Blacksmithing, and Oxen Basics for the Teamster and Team, Preserving Food, and Composting. Keeping history alive and thriving is a day-to-day way of life at Sanborn Mills Farm. I loved the property and the buildings and the skilled workers that live in the old way each and every day on the farm.

I marveled at the patience and skill it takes those folks to make the conscious choice to produce grain, vegetables, lumber, and more in a way that most of us have never seen, heard of, or could imagine was still possible. The farm is definitely worth a visit. If you have children, be sure to bring them along. They will not soon forget that there was a time, long ago, when the pace of life was slower and patience was a necessity to get jobs done and to live fulfilling lives. Timothy says it is best to call ahead to schedule a visit. It is my suggestion that you leave your cell phone in the car but definitely keep an open mind and be prepared to be amazed when you visit this beautiful farm. The Country Bookseller Turns 20 The Country Bookseller is planning four days of activities to celebrate the store’s 20th anniversary. There will be activities involving authors, raffles, and storybook characters. The fun will begin Saturday, June 28, with children’s authors Barbara Goehrig (AKA Bee Waterhouse), D.J. Geribo, and Cheryl Bloser signing copies of their books from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A second line-up of authors will be present from 2 to 4 p.m., including Center Harbor’s author-illustrator Karel Hayes.
