The Laconia Railroad Station: Keystone to Laconia’s Success Story & Photos by Barbara Neville Wilson On August 22,1892 when a brass band ceremoniously marched station master E.O. Cook from the Plain Jane old Laconia railroad station, across the road to the imposing new station of red sandstone-trimmed grey granite, few people may have realized the political significance of that short walk. But Charles A. Busiel certainly did. It’s stated nowhere, but perhaps that day Busiel was leaning on the gold-headed cane he had received just two years prior when the 50 years-in-the-making Lake Shore Railroad was finally opened between Alton Bay and Laconia. He was a mastermind of that undertaking, too. This new station, echoing the design of seats of power throughout the nation, sat at the junction of two rail lines, the north-south Boston, Concord and Montreal, and the east-west Lake Shore Rail. Here was potential to join the state to the Atlantic Ocean, Canada, Boston, and all points west. Was there also potential to greatly multiply the investment he had in both railroads? His joy must have been hard to hide. And was he thinking of how the station was the perfect entryway to the Laconia that would be pronounced a true city in the very next year? A city where he would hold the mantle of first mayor? Was he even so brash as to imagine the station as the next best steppingstone to the governorship of New Hampshire itself? “Hindsight,” as they say, “is 20/20,” but even if we are simply trying to reduce complex events

to simplistic motives, there is no doubt the Laconia Railroad Station is an artifact of 19th century political intrigue and competition. Contracts were signed for the erection of the station in April of 1891, less than a year after the opening of the Lake Shore Railroad, and in quick order, the railroad moved the previous station across the way, and removed a warehouse. Four homes were razed and a total of seven properties were bought in whole or portion to expand the footprint of Depot (now Veterans) Square. It’s hard to imagine today, but where a monument now stands, there was once a brick house, a beloved home. The location was within a stone’s throw of the prominent Congregational Church, of which Busiel was an active member, and

Busiel’s own residence, and within blocks of numerous Busiel relatives. Busiel was also integral in the development of the Richardsoninspired library built a decade later across from the station, made possible through a bequest from Napoleon Bonaparte Gale. A cadre of Italian stoneworkers was hired, and the station completed in a swift 16 months. Built in the fashionable Romanesque Revival style made popular by Henry Hobson Richardson, the station referenced imposing buildings in other prominent cities, such as Trinity Church in Boston; the Sever Hall at Harvard University (Busiel’s alma mater); the Glessner House in Chicago; and the New York State Capitol in Albany.

125 years after its dedication, the Laconia Railroad Station remains an architectural icon. Built of gray granite with red mortar, trimmed in russet sandstone, the roof of slate tiles is complemented by terra cotta details. An imposing square rotunda offset by a hammered craftsmanstyle “L” on the chimney tops the building. The entrance features a weather-protecting porte-cochere, topped by a whimsical eyebrow window and the 50-foot tall general waiting room reaches grandly to light-pouring clerestory windows. The tile floor and oak walls and chrome-painted trim echo the granite and russet colors of the exterior. light make the waiting room a welcoming space in any weather. According to the 1899 Illustrated Laconian: History and Industries, “the Laconia depot at the time of its construction, was pronounced by competent judges to be ‘without doubt, all things considered, the best structure of the kind in America.’” Interestingly, it was equally unique in 2001 when R. Stuart Wallace and Lisa B. Mausolf noted in New Hampshire Railroads: Historic Context Statement that of a once half dozen architecturally notable stations in New Hampshire, Laconia and the station in North Conway were the only stations still standing. This is particularly impressive considering the radical demolition accomplished by urban renewal in Laconia in the mid-20th century. In 1944, fifty years after its opening, a Laconia schoolgirl referred to the “expensive and magnificent” Laconia Railroad Station. And perhaps she was echoing her elders who may have seen in the station a dream unfulfilled. Just three years after the Laconia station was dedicated, the rail line from Concord to Montreal was taken over by the Boston and Maine. From being a state peppered with railroads, Wallace and Mausolf report that in the early 20th century “almost everyone lived within 25 miles of a railroad,” New Hampshire became the scene of consolidation and abandonment.

Although the railroad continued to be popular during the summer tourist season, Laconia never became the mecca Charles Busiel may have imagined. Boston and Maine deferred north-south passage to its lines in the eastern portion of the state, and the Lake Shore line was promoted primarily for tourism. The lines became increasingly derelict and eventually travel was discontinued. Charles A. Busiel passed away in 1901, after having served New Hampshire as its 54th governor. Decades later, succeeding Laconia officials walked in his footsteps and proved prescient. Even before the last train rolled through Laconia in 1965, they had begun transforming the beautiful railroad station into a beautiful edifice for town offices, and today, small businesses. The station remains an attractive landmark. “Celebrate Laconia” is planning a ceremony to mark the 125th anniversary of the dedication of the Laconia Railroad Station on August 19. Additional research for this article came from: The Rail Lines of Northern New England by Robert M. Lindsell; “Historic Buildings: Laconia Railroad Station” by Kathi Caldwell Hopper (The Laker); The Up-Country Line by Edgar T. Mead; and “Laconia Railroads” by Edythe Chamberlain in Historical Essays on Laconia, NH by Students of Laconia High School for Stephen Shannon Jewett Prize, 1944.

Wolfeboro Friends of Music Presents Jazz Greats of All Time – Recreated Renowned concert pianist Frederick Moyer will perform with the Fred Moyer Jazz Trio for a Wolfeboro Friends of Music concert on Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 pm. Mr. Moyer will be joined by bassist Peter Tillotson and drummer Bob Savine at Anderson Hall at Brewster Academy. Audiences have immensely enjoyed Fred’s invention, the Moyer Cam, which enables the entire audience to see the keyboard action on the inner piano lid. The Trio performs their own arrangements of standards from the great American Songbook, but what sets them apart from all others is that they will perform note-for-note transcriptions of great-recorded jazz performances from the past. Each member painstakingly transcribes every note of these recordings, and then brings the resulting scores to life as would a Chamber music ensemble playing Bach or Beethoven, infusing the music with their own vitality and interpretations. A concert with the Fred Moyer Jazz Trio is a swinging celebration of the best in jazz, delighting both classical music lovers and long-time jazz enthusiasts. Individual selections will be announced from the stage, but will include transcriptions of Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Brubeck

and Alexander, as well as Fred’s own arrangements of “Autumn Leaves”, “On the Street Where You Live”, “Trolley Song” and others. Frederick Moyer has established a vital musical career, taking him to over 40 countries and to such distant venues as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House, Windsor Castle, Carnegie Recital Hall, Tanglewood, and the Kennedy Center. He has appeared as piano soloist with worldrenowned orchestras, including the Cleveland, Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras, the St. Louis, Dallas, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Houston, Boston, Singapore, Netherlands Radio, Latvian, Iceland and London Symphony Orchestras, the Buffalo, Hong Kong and Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestras, the National Symphony Orchestra of Brazil, and the major orchestras of Australia. In recital, his delightful commentary both informs and entertains audiences. Moyer’s wide ranging interests have led him to undertake many unique and groundbreaking projects, often involving software that he writes himself. Bassist Peter Tillotson has been blessed/cursed with an insatiable musical thirst. His journey has taken

Great Waters Music Festival Volunteers Needed Great Waters Music Festival in Wolfeboro is gearing up for its 23rd season. Each year approximately 100 volunteers help to successfully carry out the myriad tasks of producing the music, and this year will be no exception. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the success of Great Waters Music Festival. Beyond those volunteers who are visible - such as ushers and box office workers - are a great number of people who work behind the scenes. These people do a variety of tasks associated with presenting the concerts, assist with

office projects, and serve as members on various committees, such as marketing, programming and development. This summer volunteers are needed for Stage Hands, Parking and Traffic, Performer Hospitality (Green Room), Transportation, and Ushering crews. In addition, the organization is always looking for volunteers with a working familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software to assist during the off-season. There is also a part-time paid position available for box office and general management duties.

Volunteers receive the satisfaction of making a difference in the community, building lasting friendships and enjoying quality entertainment. “I sincerely enjoyed working as a Great Waters volunteer last summer. I felt I was doing something worthwhile, helping to bring good music and entertainment to our community. It was wonderful to get to know the people involved,” stated one volunteer. Great Waters Music Festival volunteers also receive one spaceavailable ticket for every four hours of donated time.

Those interested in volunteering can apply online at www.greatwaters.org under the “support us” button or by calling the Great Waters Office at 603569-7710. Great Waters Music Festival is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to present and create outstanding musical and educational events appealing to a wide variety of tastes that enrich the cultural lives of those living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.

It’s Town Wide Yard Sale Time in the Lakes Region! By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Whether your taste is for sports equipment, furniture, antiques, clothing or books, a good yard sale will have what you are looking for. Part of the fun of yard saling is the thrill of the hunt; during the summer and right into fall, there are town wide yard sales in the Lakes Region. The convenience of a town wide sale means you can find a lot of sales in one community versus driving from town to town to locate bargains. Antique and yard sale enthusiasts should plan to be in Meredith on Saturday, May 23 for bargains and unique finds when the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Annual Community Yard Sale. The yard sales will be held from 9 am to 3 pm with many locations in the Meredith Area. In addition to the many sales at individual homes, several businesses and organizations also will hold yard sales. In Meredith, the Trinity Episcopal Church, located on Route 25, will hold a group sale, and the Friends of the Library will have an annual book sale at the Meredith Public Library on Main Street. On Route 3 north of the lights, the Inter-Lakes Alumni Association will hold a sale.

Bargain hunters at Meredith Community Yard Sale. (courtesy photo) Businesses participating in the event include Berkshire Hathaway Verani Realty, located on Rt. 3 across from the town docks, and the Tuckernuck Inn, located on Red Gate Lane in Meredith. The Meredith Congregational Church will be at two locations: at the church on Highland St. where they will offer for sale a wide array of beautiful garden ornaments and at the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce porch at 272 Daniel Webster Highway. At the Chamber location, the Congregational Church will offer a Grab and Go bake sale on the morning of the yard sale. The bake sale is a great chance for busy yard sale shoppers to “grab and go”

(delicious muffins, scones, cookies, etc. and hot coffee will be for sale. All baked goods are individually wrapped.) The Community Yard Sale will be held rain or shine and maps identifying the locations of the various sales will be available beginning at 8 am the day of the sale at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center located at 272 Daniel Webster Highway. Signs will be posted at the individual locations so those attending will know where the sales are held. The community-spirited event is sponsored by the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce as a service to both residents and businesses and provides those attending with the opportunity to shop for treasures at the various sales and to frequent the local stores and restaurants. To receive more information about the event, call the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce at 603-279-6121. Elsewhere, town wide yard sales are springing up in many area towns. Tuftonboro will hold its annual Town Wide Yard Sale on Saturday, June 3 from 9 am to 1 pm. Plan on attending the sale that features everything from antiques and used goods to household items, etc. Email Tuftonboro Parks and Recreation at parksandrec@tuftonboro. org.

Wakefield will be holding a town wide yard sale on Saturday, May 27 with a rain date of May 28. This charming town will be busy with many yard sale locations offering everything from household items to antiques. Call 603522-9977 for details. Alton will be hosting an Annual Town Wide Yard Sale on Saturday, June 3. The sale starts at 8 am, and there will be many, many yard sale sites around the town, including many in-town locations as well as sales at homes in more rural areas of Alton. Thus, it is important to pick up a map featuring all yard sale locations to make sure you “hit” all the sales. The maps are free and available at the Alton Town Hall and the Gilman Library and local banks after May 26. Call 603-875-0109 for details. A mammoth Multi-Town Yard Sale will be held June 2, 3 and 4 in the towns of Gilmanton, Barnstead, Chichester, Epsom, Loudon, Northwood and Pittsfield. Imagine how many bargains and treasures you will find as you wander from town to town in the area, where many sales will take place! With many individuals and organizations registered to participate, the Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce has information on the event and you can learn more by emailing events@pittsfieldchamber. org. Check back because maps with sale locations will be available around May 31 at www.pittsfieldchamber.org. or call 603-435-6346. The Plymouth Town Wide Yard Sale has become a major event for the college town at the entrance to the north country of NH. The date for this year’s sale is Saturday, Sept. 9. The town wide yard sale will start at 9 am and features many sale sites, as it has done for a number of years. Individual families, as well as service organizations will take part, making this end-of-summer sale one not to be missed. Go to Plymouth NH Town Wide Yard Sale’s Facebook for updates.

Seeking Schools to Participate in Pumpkin Festival 2017 Although autumn and the popular Pumpkin Festival in Laconia seem months away, planning is already happening. The Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce has begun planting the seeds for NH Pumpkin Festival 2017 to be held Saturday, October 14, 2017 in Laconia, NH. Schools will soon be letting out for summer, and now is the time to let the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, the Official Organizer of the NH Pumpkin Festival in Laconia, know if your school would like to carve pumpkins. “We are excited to partner with

Bank of New Hampshire to work with schools throughout the state who want to carve pumpkins to be included in this year’s festival,” announced Karmen Gifford, President of the Lakes Region Chamber. “We are encouraging schools to go on-line to NHPumpkinFestival.com and register the name of the school, a contact person, the total number of students and to pledge the pumpkins will be part of this year’s festival. You can’t have a pumpkin festival without pumpkins!” Bank of New Hampshire, along with other festival organizers, will work with the schools to assist with fundraising projects, collaborate with local growers

Vintage auto racing thriller at Flying Monkey Fasten your seat belts! The Flying Monkey in Plymouth will mark the traditional Memorial Day running of the Indianapolis 500 with a vintage race car drama filmed right on the famed track—at speeds topping 115 mph! In honor of this year’s Indy 500, MGM’s vintage auto racing drama ‘Speedway’ will be screened with live music on Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 pm at the Flying Monkey Moviehouse and Performance Center at 39 South Main Street, Plymouth. The screening is a chance to experience the landmark film as it was intended to be seen: in a high-quality print on the big screen, with live music and with an audience. Live music will be performed by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based silent film accompanist. In ‘Speedway,’ MGM leading man William Haines stars as Bill Whipple, a cocky mechanic/race car driver in town for the “The Indianapolis Speedway” race. He meets a couple of other participants—Mac (Ernest Torrence), the old-timer with heart trouble who thinks of Bill like a son and has been trying to win this race for 17 years; and Renny, a driver not opposed to using

dirty tricks to win. ‘Speedway’ also stars actress Anita Page in a leading role. To lend an air of realism to the movie, many scenes were shot on location at the actual Indianapolis 500 track. Today, the footage provides auto racing fans a vivid glimpse of the sport as it was practiced in earlier generations. Actor William Haines was one of MGM’s biggest stars in the late 1920s, often playing the male lead romantic comedies. ‘Speedway’ was one of the final silent movies released by MGM prior to the studio’s conversion to making talking pictures. The movie will be screened with live music performed by silent film accompanist Jeff Rapsis. ‘Speedway’ is the latest in a monthly series of silent films presented with live music at the Flying Monkey. The series provides local audiences the opportunity to experience silent film as it was intended to be shown: on the big screen, in good-looking prints, with live music, and with an audience. For more information and tickets, call 603-536-2551 or visit www. flyingmonkeynh.com. For more information on the music, visit www. jeffrapsis.com.

getting ready to plant their fields with pumpkin seeds and to help connect local businesses who wish to sponsor school pumpkins. This year, the Bank of New Hampshire parking lot at 62 Pleasant Street in Laconia will feature displays of jack-o-lanterns carved by school children, a glowing new highlight to this year’s event. If you work at a school or have children attending a school that would like to participate in the pumpkin festival, please have ONE school representative per school register at NHPumpkinFestival.com no later than May 19, 2017. You will be contacted before the end of the school year and continue to work with schools in the fall leading up to the festival. Schools that register by May 19 may also be eligible to receive official pumpkin seed packets for each student (while supplies last). This year’s official pumpkin seeds are sponsored by Children’s Dentistry of the

Lakes Region/White Mountains/North Country and Kennell Orthodontics. “We are truly grateful for the support of businesses like Children’s Dentistry, Kennell Orthodontics and Bank of New Hampshire. We could not take on a project of this magnitude without a tremendous team of sponsors and volunteers!” added Gifford. The Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, 501c-6 organization made up of approximately 500 member businesses making a financial commitment to the Lakes Region business community. The Chamber’s vision is to create new opportunities and drive economic growth through collaboration with other organizations and thereby build a stronger community. For more information about the Lakes Region Chamber, go to LakesRegionChamber.org. To learn more about plans for the pumpkin festival, visit NHPumpkinFestival.com.

The Doolittle Raid Lecture at Wright Museum The Wright Museum will host the fourth lecture in its Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2017 Educational Program Series on Tuesday, May 16, from 7 to 8 pm at the Wright Museum, 77 Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH. Doors open at 6 pm. The program is titled The Doolittle Raid; The 75th Anniversary and will be presented by Dana Robertson. On Saturday, April 18, 1942, U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle led an air raid on the Japanese island of Honshu. The Sixteen B-25B Mitchell bombers and 80 courageous men led by Doolittle was the first air raid during World War II to strike the Japanese Home Islands. It demonstrated that Japan itself was vulnerable to American air attack, served as retaliation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941, and provided an important boost to American morale. Colonel Dana Robertson, (U.S. Army retired), is a former United

The League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery will be offering a Nuno Felted Scarf Class with League-juried artist, Melinda LaBarge, on Saturday, May 20, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Meredith Community Center. If you have never felted before or if you are looking to take your skills to the next level, this class is for you! Melinda will meet students at their skill level and work with them individually; no felting experience is necessary. Nuno is the Japanese word for cloth and the technique bonds loose fibers, such as hand dyed silk, merino roving, silk roving, printed silk materials, and other dyed locks onto a sheer fabric silk. The use of floral silks in unique color palettes produces a handmade product that is reminiscent of impressionist paintings. There will be an abundance of materials available to choose from to create your own special scarf, in whatever design and color you wish to make. Additional materials will be available for sale, if you wish to make more than

Classic Rock America to Appear at Capitol Center The Capitol Center for the Arts (CCA) in Concord, NH will host 1970s super band and perennial classic rock favorite AMERICA on Sunday, June 11 at 7:30 pm. Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (along with former

band mate Dan Peek) met in high school in London in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song “A Horse With No Name”. AMERICA became a global household name and paved the

way with an impressive string of hits following the success of their first #1 single. Forty-plus years later, these friends are still making music together, touring the world and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound. AMERICA’S best known tunes, including “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair”, were cornerstones of 1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio. With Peek’s departure from the fold in 1977, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell rose to the challenge and carried on as a duo. Shifts in sound and direction, changes in producers and managers, and a renewed dedication to the craft of songwriting helped rocket AMERICA to the upper reaches of the pop charts in 1982 with their smash

single, “You Can Do Magic.” During this tumultuous time in their career, Beckley and Bunnell immersed themselves in their craft, infusing a newfound maturity into their rich body of work. AMERICA’S audiences have continued to grow throughout the decades. They comprise a loyal legion of first, second and third generation fans, all bearing testament to the group’s enduring appeal. For tickets for the June 11 performance call the Capitol Center for the Arts at 603-225-1111 or online at www.ccanh.com. Tickets may also be obtained at the CCA’s box office at 44 South Main Street, Concord, NH, which is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm.

‘My New Hampshire’ Map Updates Make it Easier to find, post favorite historic places To celebrate “May is Preservation Month,” the NH Division of Historical Resources (NHDHR) has upgraded its popular “My New Hampshire” photo-sharing site, making it easier to view, locate and learn about historic places submitted by the public. New features include preview photos of each location and one-click access to descriptions of them. Zooming in on the map automatically changes the previewed images so that only those in selected map areas are shown, making it easier for users to find images from a particular part of the state. “My New Hampshire” currently has more than 180 historic sites on its map and continues to accept additional images and descriptions. The NHDHR encourages users to submit current, not historic, photos of historical sites, so that users can view New Hampshire’s existing historic treasures. The site is smartphone-friendly and

can be accessed from the NHDHR’s website, nh.gov/nhdhr. Photos and information from “My New Hampshire” are selected for posting on the NHDHR’s two Twitter accounts, @My_NewHampshire and @NHDHR_SHPO. Users wishing to share their favorite historic sites via social media are encouraged to include #MyNewHampshire as part of their posts. “Since the Division of Historical Resources launched ‘My New Hampshire’ a few years ago, the site has become a valuable resource for viewing historic places that help shape New Hampshire’s identity,” said Elizabeth Muzzey, director of the NHDHR and state historic preservation officer. “We look forward to sharing more of the public’s favorite places both during Preservation Month and going forward.” The New Hampshire Division

of Historical Resources, the “State Historic Preservation Office,” was established in 1974. Its mission is to preserve and celebrate New Hampshire’s irreplaceable historic resources through

programs and services that provide education, stewardship, and protection. For more information, visit nh.gov/ nhdhr or call 603-271-3483.

The Founding Fathers: What Were They Thinking? On Tuesday, May 16 at 7 pm, at the Corner Meeting House in Belmont, the Belmont Historical Society is sponsoring the NH Humanities To Go program, “The Founding Fathers: What Were They Thinking?” by Richard Hesse. (Hesse has been a New Hampshire Humanities presenter on the subject of American history for a several years.) In 1787, delegates gathered in Philadelphia to address a wide variety of crises facing the young United States of America and produced a charter for a new government. In modern times, competing political and legal claims are frequently based on what

those delegates intended. Mythology about the founders and their work at the 1787 Convention has obscured both fact and legitimate analysis of the events leading to the agreement called the Constitution. Richard Hesse explores the cast of characters called “founders,” the problems they faced, and the solutions they fashioned. Richard Hesse is a Professor Emeritus at the UNH School of Law and has published on a variety of legal and ethical topics. His academic concentration is on state and federal constitutional law and international human rights. Hesse has been an advocate for civil and human rights

The program is funded by the NH Humanities To Go Program and is free and open to the public. Science Center to Raise Scholarship Money On June 6 and 7, 2017, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, located in Holderness, will participate in NH Gives to raise money in support of the scholarship fund for Guided Discoveries, week-long outdoor natural adventure camps for children ages 4 to 14. Guided Discovery camps for children offer hands-on experiential learning through weeklong outdoor summer programs taught by experienced naturalists and educators at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. Using the outdoors as a classroom and live native NH animals as teaching ambassadors, children explore the natural world through programs such as Outdoor Living Skills, Junior Animal Keepers, AquaCamp, Sky Hunters, The Nature of Clay, Marvelous Mammals, and more. These programs foster the imagination, develop enthusiastic participants, and promote conservation of the natural environment. NH Gives, an initiative of the NH Center for Nonprofits, is a 24-hour event where nonprofit organizations throughout NH unite to hold a statewide day of giving. This fundraising event celebrates the good work NH nonprofits perform through their missions to help build stronger communities, support healthier populations, and protect the natural environment. “We are excited to be a part of NH Gives this year,” said Janet Robertson, Director of Development and Communications at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. “This is a wonderful opportunity to raise funds

We Have It All!

for our scholarship program allowing more children to experience nature firsthand.” Not all children who wish to attend science adventure camps are able, due to financial considerations. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has offered scholarships for several years, but last year’s requests exceeded the annual amount the organization was able to offer from its scholarship fund. All proceeds from this year’s NH Gives campaign will support scholarships for their Guided Discoveries outdoor natural adventure camps. For more information about NH Gives or to donate to the scholarship fund, visit their website at https://www. nhgives.org/organizations/squamlakes-natural-science-center. The mission of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring NH’s natural world. Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, an informal public garden, and lake cruises, the Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors since 1966 about the importance of our natural world. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is located on Route 113 in Holderness, and is open daily from May 1 through November 1. The Science Center is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is the only AZA-accredited institution in all of northern New England. For further information about the Science Center, call 603-968-7194 or visit www.nhnature.org.
