The Potter Place railroad station was built in 1874 and is the place to see most of the Society’s historical collection. The station is a gem - a well-preserved example of a Victorian station design and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At one time the Northern Railroad, (later to become the Boston and Maine Railroad), stopped in Potter Place on its way to and from Boston to White River Junction, Vt. If you want to know what a railroad station was like in a small town in this time period, view the station master’s office and imagine how a busy railroad brought the bigger world to a sleepy village. Across the street is the homestead site and grave of magician Richard Potter and his wife. Potter’s story is fascinating; he brought the romance and lure of far away places to the village and made a place for his family in a spot one would never imagine a famous person would settle at the time. “We have a new Secret Garden in the cellarhole of Potter’s former home,” says Pat Cutter, president of the Andover Historical Society. Pat knows a lot about the history of Potter Place and the area; if she happens to be on site during your visit, make sure and stop to chat with her. “We are located on an active rail trail,” she adds. “It is the trail from Boscawen to Lebanon and lots of

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper There is a lot to do during Bike Week in the Lakes Region, from Gypsy Tours to all the action at Weirs Beach and the NH International Speedway. However, you might want to spend a day off the beaten path to discover some fun and unsual spots on your motorcycle vacation. While I am not a motorcycle owner, the hidden-away spots I have discovered over the years are as fun for bikers as those rambling around in a car. A drive from Laconia to Franklin on Rt. 3 and then on towards the tiny town of Andover will take you to a village that is rural and unusual. Take a quick left off Rt. 11 in the Andover area and follow the sign to the hamlet of Potter Place. The village is named for Richard Potter, a most unusual inhabitant of the area in the 1800s. Richard was African-American and gained fame as NH’s black magician. To be African American in NH in the 1800s was a bit of a rarity; to also be a magician living in a small town was unheard of. At Potter Place, there is a beautifully restored train station and a very unusual general store across the street. The Andover Historical Society (Potter Place is a little offshoot of Andover), which maintains the train station and general store buildings (and a few others) is open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day on Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm and on Sundays from 12:30 abin y C to 3 pm. oz

• Motorcycle Continued from page 3 bicyclists use it for recreation. We get a lot of visitors due to the trail.” Also in the collection is a preserved caboose from the Central Vermont line. It is from the early 1900s and available for viewing. Among the buildings in the grouping is the Potter Place freight house and the Boston & Maine railroad box car from the early 1900s. Although the train area is fascinating, my favorite part of the historic buildings is the circa 1912 J. C. Emons Store and Potter Place Post Office. The history of the store is one typical of small towns: The business was the life blood of the community and it continued to serve Potter Place until 1958. The post office was in operation until 1988. My compliments to Society members who have worked to restore the village store as it would have been in the early 1900s. In the restoration, the original tin ceiling was rebuilt, and display cabinets and other store fixtures added. The Post Office area contains the original mailboxes and sorting table. Clearly, the general store has been well decorated and certainly harkens back to the time when locals got just

about everything at the town’s one and only store, from molasses to farm tools to fabric and their mail (not to mention the gossip about what was happening in town!) The final gem in the collection is the Tucker Mountain Schoolhouse, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tucker Mountain Schoolhouse dates from 1837, and served children of the town until 1893. It is available for viewing in its original location and looks much as it did when it was in use. Like many schoolhouses of the time, it is small – about 16 by 18 ft. with an ell attached for storage of school goods and firewood. The schoolhouse is open for viewing from 1 to 3 pm on the second Sunday of the month from June to October, and is located about five miles from the railroad buildings; Historical Society members can point the way. To reach the area, travel from Wolfeboro on Rt. 28 (Center Street) for a few miles. Take a right turn onto Rt. 109 (you will see a sign at the intersection for Lake

If you are up for a swim or some beach time, stop at Wentworth State Park (admission fee charged). The park has about 50 acres and is located on the shores of the scenic lake. Popular activities at the park include swimming, picnicking and fishing. Amenities include picnic tables, so plan to bring a snack or lunch if you are going to enjoy the beach for the day. While I love Wentworth State Park for a beach day, there is another gem/ off-the-beaten-path area I make a point of stopping at every summer. There are no fun amusement park rides, there is no fancy restaurant or touristy attraction at this spot, but if you like to step back in time and imagine what tourism for the wealthy was like in the 1700s, visit Governor Wentworth Historic Site. You will see a sign on the right

directing you to the site (on Wentworth Farm Road), a few miles beyond the Wentworth State Park area. The first time I visited the site I had no idea what to expect. I was out yard saling on a summer’s Saturday morning, saw the sign and decided to explore the area. (I was a bit skeptical about driving down a very narrow dirt road with bushes nearly touching the car on both sides!) Governor Wentworth was a 1700s NH Royal Governor, appointed by the powers that were in place in England. I knew he once built a summer mansion on the shores of the lake and that the estate no longer existed. But that is about all I knew. So why designate the area if there is no mansion? What would be the point? I wondered. As I drove into a grassy, open area

The Shaker Legacy The Gilmanton Historical Society will offer a talk by Gilmanton resident Darryl Thompson who will speak about the Shakers and his experience growing up at Canterbury Shaker Village. Bud Thompson (Darryl’s father), helped found the museum at Shaker Village with three Shaker sisters. The program is Tues., June 23 at 7:30 pm at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron works. The program is free and open to the public; donations to support the work of the Society are gratefully received. Refreshments and social hour will begin at 7 pm. The program begins promptly at 7:30 pm. The Society’s Museum, in the basement of Old Town Hall, is open at 7 pm before the program. The Museum

• Motorcycle Continued from page 4 and pulled to the side of the road, I was surrounded by the past. If that sounds corny to say, it is, however, the truth. There is a huge cellarhole that is a testament of a distant past when this area was bustling with the business of keeping the mansion well stocked. Along with the cellarhole, all that is left is a large old stone well, which at one time provided water for the inhabitants. What was once most likely an open-air estate with gardens and green lawns and supposedly a road that led right down to the shores of Lake Wentworth is now overgrown and very quiet. You won’t find much at the site to entertain but if you want to see the actual place where a governor and his wealthy family once summered and to step where those involved in the Revolutionary War once stepped, this place is worth a visit. It is more of a spot to sit quietly and use your imagination. Indeed, the past hangs heavy in the air, even on a sunny summer’s day. I always like to ponder what daily life was like at the huge mansion, who were the guests, how did the servants really feel about working for a governor deeply opposed to the American idea of separation from England? Although no photos or drawing exist of the Governor Wentworth

is open for summer hours, May to September, every Saturday from 10 am to noon, except July 4 and Old Home Day (August 8). The Society’s summer series is presented on the fourth Tuesday of each month, through September. July 23 features a walking tour of Gilmanton Iron Works Village. History of Lower Gilmanton will be the program on August 26. The final program of the season, on September 22, is Exemplary Country Estates of New Hampshire. The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications on the Mansion, visitors are invited to explore the historic remains of the extensive northern plantation built just before the outbreak of the American Revolution. It has been the site of an archaeological dig where artifacts have been carefully pieced together. The artifacts reveal details about daily life and work methods of the privileged class of the period. When used by the wealthy Governor and his family, the estate had over 4,000 acres and employed over 100 servants. It is said the house was about 100 by 45 feet and was thought to be the largest house in New England in its day. Wentworth and his clan lived in the home during the summer and resided in Portsmouth during the winter months. The estate also included stables, a blacksmith shop, a dairy building, sawmill and smokehouse, grist mill and other structures necessary to providing all the estate needed to operate smoothly. Wentworth did not use the summer home for long; when the Revolutinoary War broke out, anyone loyal to the King was at risk. Thus, Wentworth and his wife fled to Boston and later to Canada. The Wolfeboro mansion was seized by the state of New Hampshire after the war and sold at auction. Not so many years later, it burned to the ground. The property was gifted to the state of NH in the 1930s. Those who are looking for a chance

World War II Motorcycles at the Wright Museum The Wright Museum will host the seventh session of the “Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2015 Educational Programming” on Tues., June 16, beginning at 7 pm. Doors open at 6 pm. Mike Hashem will talk about the brands of motorcycles produced during World War II. He will explain how they were used during the war and why they were slowly phased-out because of the creation and production of the Jeep. Hashem also will demonstrate the full operation of the Harley WLA motorcycle, which is in the Wright Museum’s collection. All of the other motorcycles in the museum’s collection will be on display for the program.

League of NH Craftsmen Lecture Series The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Fine Craft Gallery announces its 2015 Lecture Series hosted by Meredith Bay Colony Club. The first lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held June 22 from 7 to 8 pm and will feature national award-winning jeweler,

Paulette Werger. The lecture, Jewelry with a Simple Visual Narrative, will give an overview of the processes involved in the jewelry Werger creates, discussing some awardwinning pieces and her experience working collaboratively with other artists.

Originally from rural upstate NY, Paulette’s great-grandfather was trained at the Hudson River School. Growing up surrounded by his paintings and the landscape that inspired him, she draws her inspiration from the natural world. Paulette brings to her work the gentle features of the garden and transforms them into works of art for both the home and the body. “Playing with the metaphor of cycles of life and growth allows me to work within a simple visual narrative. Summer Sailing Fun…With the Winnipesaukee Sailing School By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Water and kids seem to go together naturally. It is one of the prime reasons children look forward to summer. They dream of beach days spent swimming and playing in the water. There is yet another way kids can enjoy water in the summer that also teaches wonderful life skills: sailing. Sailing might seem like a hobby for adults only. When watching a sailboat gliding across the lake, it might be assumed it took years of practice to become a masterful sailor. Indeed, there are plenty of lessons to be learned before becoming a topnotch sailboat enthusiast, but the earlier one starts to learn, the better. In the Lakes Region, a fun and informative way for youngsters to all about sailing is at the Winnipesaukee Sailing School in Gilford, NH. The purpose of the school, which is run by the Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association, according to information at www.lwsa.org, is “to encourage the

tions; to forward and advance sailing in all its phases and more particularly to promote competitions and regattas under uniform rules among the members and other clubs within our region; and to foster local, national and international amateur sailing competition.” Those are very lofty goals, but the school does indeed achieve all that. For children who want to learn to sail, the mission is less important than the fun they have at the sailing school where they learn new skills that will last a lifetime. Although classes are filling up for the summer, there are still openings, so do not wait to call and sign your children up for a fun experience of learning to sail. According to Al Posnack, a longtime, dedicated volunteer with the Sailing School (and Youth Sailing Committee member), “Putting youngsters into sailboats is about much more than learning to sail. It’s about problem solving, teamwork, communicating, concentration, responsibility and sportsmanship. It helps students build self confidence and develop skills that

will serve them for life.” The Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association was founded in 1988 to promote sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee. From the start, the primary purpose of the association was to operate a youth sailing school in Gilford. Children ages 6 to 17 can attend the school, which is located at recently acquired property on Smith Cove at 25 Davis Road in Gilford. (Prior to owning the David Road land, the Association staff utilized Fay’s Boat Yard for the program. June 15, 2015 guard 420 sailing dinghies. The focus is on introduction to sailing and safety in and around sailboats. Students will learn to rig, sail and steer the boat. As students gain skill from the Level One courses, they can move on to Level Two classes depending upon their age. The Level Two classes offer deeper sailing skills and take place in Optimist or Vanguard sailing dinghies. Other classes at the school include a Keelboat Sailing Clinic for ages 16 to 18, teaching how to sail a keelboat. Basic sailing knowledge and background is a prerequisite. The class is taught on keelboats going over skills learned in prior classes such as navigation and chart reading, weather, compass readings, identifying marks and hazards on the water, boat handling, spinnaker handling, seamanship, anchoring, and other advanced skills. For many young sailing enthusiasts, racing is the long-term goal. At the school ages 8 to 16 can take a course called Racing. It is geared to introduce students to sailboat racing or to sharpen their current racing skills. It is open to all students, ages 8-16, who have successfully completed the Level One class or have equivalent experience. The class covers all aspects of sailboat racing, and includes classroom instruction, on-the-water instruction, drills, and actual races. The class is closely coached and will cover starting, buoy rounding, boat speed, tactics, strategy, and the rules of racing. More advanced students will be coached in advanced go-fast and tactical skills. Participants will have the opportunity to compete in youth regattas elsewhere in New England. The sailing school offers a Youth Racing Club, which has become quite popular with youngsters who love to

Activities include weekly races and clinics on Tuesday evenings, trips to regattas and the opportunity to crew on a boat in the lake’s major racing fleet. Racing club membership is open to any sailor who can demonstrate adequate basic boat-handling skills. This is an ambitious list of classes, obviously requiring experienced instructors. Posnack explains, “Our staff of nationally certified instructors has a combined 70 years of experience with LWSA. Many of our instructors started out as campers, worked their way up as junior instructors, and then instructors.” Course materials and teaching aids are based on US Sailing and American Red Cross curricula. Course time is a combination of both classroom and on-water training. All classes start at 9 am and while one might assume kids would rather sleep in on the beloved summer vacation days, a chance to have fun at the school gets them up

and going in time for classes. After all, what child wouldn’t want to be on the water, in a sailboat, learning to sail that boat themselves? Posnack explains, ‘Sailing is a wonderful lifetime sport that appeals to individuals of all abilities. We have children that arrive to the Sailing School at age seven, we teach them a few skills the first day, give them the confidence, and push them off to see them steer their own boat! In a matter of hours, they are the captains of their

own vessels. “To see the smiles on their faces when they are doing something totally independent is rewarding to watch”, says Sailing School Director Anthony Sperazzo. (He has been the program’s director for the past seven years). “We provide students with basics skills that will stay with them for a lifetime, such as sportsmanship, confidence, collaboration, and ability to solve problems.” Perhaps the best testament to the joys of learning to sail and the sailing school come from the children themselves. Says a teenage student, “We bought a boat last summer and now I’m showing my parents how to sail. They want to buy a bigger boat now.” Posnack says another goal of the school is to teach sailing to people with disabilities. What a great way for someone with a disability to become a part of the world of sailing and to get out on the water. There is still time to register your youngsters for this confidence-building, fun program. LWSA Scholarships are available to help any student who might otherwise be unable to participate because of an inability to pay. Everyone needs water in one form or another, which is why the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is celebrating this vital resource with H2Ooooh! Day. On Sat., June 20, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, the Science Center will offer guests a wide range of activities and entertainment in order to educate about water and the many life forms that depend upon it. Guests will learn about water by watching engaging demonstrations, such as A Drop in the Bucket, which puts the Earth’s current drinkable water supply into perspective, and Enviroscape Model, from 10 am to 3 pm. Additionally, guests will be able to work with a representative from the NH Department of Environmental Services to build their own plankton, also from 10 am to 3 pm. New Hampshire Boat Museum Seeks Items For Upcoming Auction Thinking of selling your boat this summer? The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro has the perfect venue at their New England Vintage Boat Auction to be held Sat., July 11 on the museum’s grounds starting at 10 am. The Boat Museum is actively seeking consignments and donations for the auction, which is the museum’s largest fundraiser of the year. A wide variety of boats, as well as boat or lakerelated items, are sold each year. The auction draws hundreds of bidders, making it a great way to sell your boat or to purchase a boat to use. To learn more about consigning or donating a boat or item, visit www. nhbm.org or call 569-4554 to have paperwork mailed to you. Individuals are encouraged to contact the museum early to finalize their consignment or donation. The deadline for completed paperwork is July 6. Due to storage considerations, items will be accepted at the museum from July 3-9 only. Boats and other auction items will be promoted ahead of time at www. nhbm.org, to help entice buyers. There are also preview opportunities for the public on Fri., July 10, from noon-5 pm and Sat., July 11, from 8-10 am. Buyers are encouraged to pre-register for the auction at www.nhbm.org. A typical selection of boats the museum seeks for auction include wooden, vintage or classic, fiberglass, canoes, sailboats and kayaks in conditions ranging from excellent to

The donor receives a tax credit, while the proceeds from the sale benefit the Boat Museum and their education programs and exhibits. Making Waves and Breaking Records By Michael Travis

Late last fall, when you could see your breath in the air, and there were no leaves on the trees, and birds were on their way south, Betty Ann Bickford of Island Real Estate was still out on Lake Winnipesaukee taking buyers, sellers, agents, inspectors and appraisers on her 21 ft. Grady White to help finish her year’s busy island sales. It is no surprise she logged over 2,000 miles on her boat helping people achieve their island dreams. I didn’t know anyone who spent that much time on a boat - until I met Betty Ann. A few of the miles on her boat were spent with one waterfront agent who shared a listing on Rattlesnake Island. That agent was me. No stranger to island living, my family owned a 1.3 acre island in McGregor Bay, Canada, nine miles by boat to get to in uncharted waters from the landing and 28 miles by car to the nearest town called Little Current, which was an overstatement. I learned as a skinny, redheaded, freckled face 11-year-old the real appeal of island living as part of a family of seven. I learned to drive a boat—even build a boat, before I learned to drive a car. I grew up learning about nature, fishing holes, campfires, boating rules,

sail boat races, swimming — and girls. I learned everything that had to do with island living — I thought—until I met Betty Ann. Decades passed. My hair is no longer red—actually much of my hair is no longer! Life took me from the shores of Lake Michigan, to Manhattan Island, to East Haddam on the Connecticut River, and Commercial Wharf on the Boston Harbor. Then life began again for me as an owner of a small lake house in New Hampshire, and then as a waterfront agent in real estate. Even though I have sold properties on over 50 different lakes, I thought I knew everything I needed to know about waterfront real estate—until I met Betty Ann. Betty Ann has been a true waterfront agent on Lake Winnipesaukee for over 30 years. Her entire focus is non-bridged island properties. There are some 365 islands on Lake Winnipesaukee-only 252 of which are habitable. This week marks the 850th island sale for Island Real Estate. That’s right—850! Island Real Estate began as a weekend hobby for John F. Bridges from his Treasure Island home in 1977— ironically selling only properties with no bridges. In 1984, Betty Anne began doing weekend bookkeeping work for John

in a small office in Minge Cove with a desk and an outhouse in the back. After a year of much resistance, John finally convinced Betty Ann to get her real estate license. That presented other challenges, such as learning how to drive a boat, not to mention docking, rope knots, navigation, buoys, weather, the rules of the water—and where all of these 365 or so islands were—no GPS or MapQuest to help—just maps. It is one thing to simply know about Island Real Estate. It is another to actually work and share a listing with Betty Ann, and experience first hand the Betty Ann her clients know and love in action. I was humbled by her knowledge of the water, the islands and island life. I never knew someone with the innate ability to navigate a lake and to master

the sometimes-murky waters of a real estate transaction — until I met Betty Ann. And now, before summer has officially begun, Betty Ann Bickford has made new waves and broken new records. Waterskiing is Alive and Well in Wolfeboro By Sarah Wright Have you ever asked yourself, “Do people still go waterskiing?” Well, I have the answer and it’s a resounding “Yes.” Wolfeboro is a waterskiing hub for Lake Winnipesaukee as well as the whole state. In fact, there’s a whole history of waterskiing in the town, from the old Wolfeboro Ski Club of the 1950s and 60s that used to put on shows at the town docks, to the Abenaki Water Ski Club, formed in 1971. The Abenaki Club actually takes waterskiing to new heights with tournaments scheduled every summer on Back Bay in Wolfeboro. Bill Swaffield is on the board of directors for the club, and says that it’s the only one he knows of on Lake Winnipesaukee. Like many water skiers, Bill learned to water ski when he was about 7 or 8, and has been skiing ever since. “Waterskiing is a great workout for your arms, back, and shoulders,” Bill says. “It’s a fun sport that will get you in shape.” Each summer, the Abenaki Water Ski Club hosts four events for water skiers where they can compete to win trophies. All four events include a slalom competition, but three of them also feature tricks and jumps. “Lake Winnipesaukee is the only place in New Hampshire with a water ski jump on public water,” says Bill, “and the jump part of the competition often draws a crowd along the shores of Back Bay.” Skiers from all over New England register for the events, and even some skiers from as far south as New York

and New Jersey get in on the action. “Usually we have about 30 to 40 competitors, ranging anywhere in age from about 6 or 7 up to age 70,” says Bill, “The skiers are divided by age group and each skier gets to ski two rounds.” First up is the slalom event. Six buoys are set up, three on each side, and the skier has to ski diagonally back and forth between them. Speed and accuracy determine the winner. One of the sanctioned scorers for the event is Claudia Shilo. Claudia is also on the board for the Abenaki Water Ski Club, and has competed in slalom events for years. She’s a five-time state slalom champion and two-time record holder. “I actually started skiing later in life, when my kids were learning,” says Claudia. “They needed a third person in the boat, so that was me.” It was difficult for her to learn in the beginning. “Getting up is the hardest part, figuring out how to get up and then getting the hang of it,” says Claudia. She soon became a natural at it, preferring one ski to two, which is harder to learn. Her husband,

When I asked Claudia why she likes the sport of water skiing, she says, “I like the challenge, and the idea of steadily improving at it.” She also enjoys the companionship of the ski group and ski club. For the jump competition, the key is to get the most distance off your jump. And in the trick competition, skiers might do front or back flips, or jump over the rope back and forth on one ski. Becky Bartlett competes in the slalom as well as the jump and trick competitions. “I started waterskiing when I was 5 years old on Lake Wentworth where my parents used to rent a camp,”

says Becky, “I joined the Abenaki Ski Club in the sixth grade. Through the help of other skiers in the ski club, I learned how to run the slalom course, go over the jump, and how to trick ski. Tricking is fun, but it’s a hard sport to learn only because it takes a ton of falls to just learn one trick.” In college, at the University of Alabama, Becky was team captain of the school’s water ski team. Becky says, “What I enjoy about waterskiing is being on the water. If I can’t be skiing myself, I can be teaching others how to water ski and I’m almost as happy doing that as when I am skiing myself.” The tournaments scheduled for this year include the NH Open on June 27, the Lakes Region Open on July 25, the NH Championships on August

8, and the New England Slalom Championships on September 12. Skiers begin competing at 8 am and the event lasts into the afternoon. If you are interested in entering, contact Claudia at 737-1212. The Abenaki Ski Club currently has about 40 members, and gladly welcomes new skiers. You can usually find club members skiing in the Back Bay on Saturday and Sunday, beginning around 9 am. If you’d like to use the course or jump, Bill asks that you call him at 393-7307 first, to learn about the current rules and restrictions as well as potential hazards to watch for in the water. He can also answer any questions you may have about club membership. If all this talk about waterskiing makes you want to try it out for yourself, there are a couple of places where you can go for lessons in the Wolfeboro area. Based out of Brookfield, M&M Ski School has been teaching people to water ski for 30 years. Bob McGraw’s father started the business in 1958, and at 81 years old, he’s still waterskiing. When he retired, Bob and his daughter,

Samantha, took over, and added lessons in wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and paddleboarding to the mix. My Library By Bonnie Carnivale Photos courtesy Gilford Public Library “There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home.” And Dorothy clicks together the heels of her ruby shoes hoping to be transported to the farm in Kansas and Auntie Em and Uncle Henry. When I bump the heels of my periwinkle running shoes together I’m chanting, “There’s no place like Gilford Public Library, there’s no place like Gilford Public Library.” And I transport myself there two or three times a week. The weekly newsletter hints: “Our

monthly art exhibit area has changed, and we have some wonderful art by Lee Donahue. . .” These displays are always worth a few extra minutes when I stop by for a new book or movie. Last month I led a small group of women in an introduction to yoga in the meeting room on the lower level. This same room displayed original local artwork paired with floral designs created by members of the Opechee Garden Club. One Thursday a month, my husband and I come to the meeting room for Foreign Movie Night with

Take a Walk…and Hear a Talk…at the Castle Visitors come to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro to tour the beautiful estate and attend the many events that take place in the Carriage House. find geocaches both on the property and anyplace you would like to bring family and friends. On July 20, Life of a Horse features Bobby Towle from Riding in the Clouds. He will provide guests with a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run the stables at the Castle. Join a naturalist from the Squam Lake Natural Science Center for Insect Investigation on August 17 to take a closer look at these intriguing creatures that live nearly everywhere. Participants will venture to both terrestrial and aquatic communities to collect insects and observe their many shapes, colors and sizes. And get ready for this: during the walk, participants will visit with a live insect eater! This event is fun for children and adults alike. On August 24, Fern Identification features Jane Williamson for a look into the realm of ferns. As a Speaking for Wildlife presenter with the UNH Cooperative Extension program, Jane has a solid background in fern evolution, fern life cycles and morphology. In February the selection was Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice; in April it was Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. This month we’ll talk about Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Abi, with her experience as a published novelist and teacher, brings great depth of understanding to her discussions. And, there’s no test. In May, I participated in a discussion of Grandma Gatewood’s Walk by Ben Montgomery. Betty Tidd, a recently retired librarian who led the discussion, not only had detailed background information, she brought her son, who had hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1981, to share the experience of an 18-year-old in contrast to the 67-year-old Gatewood, who in 1955 was the first woman to complete the trail. Emma Gatewood hiked in Keds with a handmade sack containing her necessities thrown over her shoulder. The dozen of us sat in front of the fieldstone fireplace on the sofa or cushy chairs nibbling on chocolate cake provided by a volunteer. “There’s no place like Gilford Public Library.” In the past, I have taken a memoir writing class and co-facilitated a peer writer’s group. I’ve met writers during the summer author’s program; listened with fascination to world travelers; been entertained by musicians and once I helped chaperone a teen open

Page 31 mike night. “What would you like to do today?” I’ve asked my visiting grandchildren. “Can we go to the library?” they reply. There they have participated in craft projects, joined the summer reading program, built Lego cities and played in the puppet theater. I love the walls decorated with hand-painted tiles that children from the elementary school designed and executed as a permanent exhibit when the library was new in 2008. Do you remember when librarians demanded silence? The librarians at my library (it’s become my library) greet me with a smile and know my name. At the circulation desk I usually find Molly or Joanne or Becky. They might recommend a book or a BBC series on DVD. We might exchange a story and a laugh. “Did you know . . .” Molly or Joanne or Becky might begin, and tell me about some exciting program coming up. Conversational French or German. Line dancing or Tai Chi. I look around at all the activity. The computers are all in use. The knitting club clicks away in the seating area near the periodicals and Try it Out Kits; volunteers are re-shelving books and DVDs; someone has set up a work station with her laptop and paperwork at one of the tables near a window and a man relaxes in an armchair with a magazine. Katherine is my library’s director. I ask what her favorite part of her job is. She does not hesitate, “Collection development. I love books.” She loves the staff and volunteers and patrons, of

course, but admits to having the heart of a librarian; not the stern spinster variety I assure you! Katherine tells me that Abi and Molly will be going to classrooms in the middle school introducing new graphic novels. As children’s librarian, Abi will visit the elementary school as well. This excites me. I have a not-sosecret passion for children’s picture books and young adult novels and have collected hundreds. My 11-year-old grandson, a reading addict, has asked me, “Can I have your kid’s books when

you die, Lita?” Now you know what I do at the library. There is SO much more. Toddler Story Time, Open Painting, Social Bridge, Mahjong, Gilford Clickers camera group, and Line Dancing . . .
