Skills and Fun at Boat Building Classes By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Photos courtesy Sheri Thomas “I wanted a kayak so I could play on the lake,” says Sheri Thomas of the Wolfeboro area. “And I thought it would be cool to build my own kayak.” Such is the can-do attitude of Sheri, who has spent many years on the lake and is a lifelong resident. “My parents have a place in Alton Bay and I have enjoyed being on the water for years.” While Sheri could easily have gone out and bought a kayak, she went a different route after learning about the boat building classes offered by the NH Boat Museum each summer. The Boat Museum (located in Wolfeboro) has many classes and programs – for children and adults. The boat building class Sheri decided to take was for women and that also appealed to her. The chance to network with other women and to meet the challenge of creating her kayak was attractive. “I called my older sister, Nora, and invited her to do the class with me,” Sheri recalls. “She was excited too!” Although Nora lives in Rochester, NH, she was eager to take the boat building class and didn’t mind the drive to Wolfeboro. Since it was a five-day workshop, participants were making a bit of a commitment to be at the Boat Museum grounds (the class took place under a big tent) from about 8:30 am to 3 pm for the five days. “Boating on the lake is a family thing. I had never taken a sailing lesson
Kayaks Sheri Thomas and her sisters built reflect the personalities of their makers. and when I tried sailing it wasn’t my thing. But I love kayaking; it is leaner and faster,” Sheri explains when asked why she chose to build a kayak vs. a modest sailboat or canoe. Sheri and her sister took the course in 2009, and the classes have morphed over time. This summer, the Boat Museum offers two classes: Adult & Family Boat Building from July 8 to 16, running 8:30 am to 3:30 pm; Youth Boat Building will run from July 31 to August 11 with the hours of 9 am to 3 pm. The first class will be for adults and families (Adult & Family Boat Building), and adults can work individually or as a team with family and/or children. Adults can choose between making a one-person canoe,
a one-person kayak, a Paddleboard, a Bevin’s Skiff, and an Opti Sailboat. The museum will have all the tools, supplies and expertise to help build the boat. Depending on the type of boat you select, you may be finished with your project prior to the end of the course. The second session (Youth Boat Building) is for children age 12 and up. Both boys and girls are encouraged to apply. Children will be taught the safe use of hand tools and a limited number of small power tools. Students can choose from the one-person canoe, the one-person kayak, and the Bevin’s Skiff. At the end of each session, a special launching on Lake Wentworth will be held to celebrate the completion of the craft.
Kits expected to be available for purchase are: Six Hour Canoe: A oneperson plywood canoe; Kayak: One person Kayak – max weight 160 lbs.; Bevin’s Skiff (11 ft., 6 in. skiff that will accommodate several adults and can be adapted to handle a small outboard motor.); Optimist Sailboat Dinghy. “I chose to make a Chesapeake 16, which is a 16-ft. kayak made of mahogany plywood. The Boat Museum volunteers had the patterns all cut out for us. They offered us a lot of help, but I must stress they did not do the work for us!” Sheri laughs. Sheri had taken a half-year of woodshop in high school, so she was not unfamiliar with being around power tools and wood. Serendipitously, Art Brunt, her high school shop teacher, was one of the volunteers for the boat building class. This likely put Sheri a bit more at ease, along with her can-do and easy-going attitude. The week was a busy one…and a lot of fun. “We started with coffee in the morning and went over basic safety. Each participant had a one-on-one volunteer and everyone, as it turned out, was making a kayak.” Obviously eager to get started, the participants laid out their kayak pieces (the kayak comes in kit form and pieces are fashioned together during the class). When asked if all went smoothly, Sheri recalls, “I did something terribly • Boat Building Continued on page 4

• Boat Building Continued from page 3 wrong with mine at one point. I was trimming the front of the boat with a power tool and by mistake, I punched holes in the front of the boat! But our volunteer instructors were great and they helped me use epoxy to fix it.” The kayaks were held together with nails and epoxy; a sheet of fiberglass is affixed to the bottom of the kayak. There were daily goals to be met as students tried to get to a certain point due to the time factor. For example, epoxy was left on overnight to dry. The finished kayaks could be left in a natural wood or the trim painted in a chosen color, such as blue or red. Sheri took a week of vacation time from her job to take the class and she has always been glad she did. The seven women who took the class clearly bonded over the experience of building their own kayaks. “We still stay in touch and for example, soon we are going for a paddle on Squam Lake,” Sheri says. “And we meet up for a Lake Wentworth paddle in July.” Why Lake Wentworth? Because that is where the class launched their completed kayaks. On the Saturday morning at the close of the week’s class, all participants and volunteers met at Albee Beach to launch their kayaks. Sheri says it was a great feeling to launch a kayak she had actually made, and she could tell right away that her kayak was going to handle well. And indeed it has stood the test of time. Sheri and her sisters go out often for paddle adventures. Her two other sisters heard about the success Sheri and Nora had and they saw the beautiful kayaks and decided to take a boat building class at the Boat Museum
as well. Sheri, her sisters - and sometimes her fellow participants from the boat building class - get together for paddling on Winnipesaukee and other area lakes. “My kayak is lightweight and I can haul it myself,” Sheri adds with pride in her voice. “My fellow boat building classmates were business people and one young woman was a teacher. We had some retired people as well; it was really a great diverse group. My sister is not an outdoorsy type and I think she was brave to take the class and to build her kayak.” What would Sheri say to those who might be considering taking the class? “It was very empowering and the oneon-one personalized help during the process was great. The volunteers/ instructors didn’t do the work for us, but they helped us a lot. They didn’t take over and do it for us but they were patient and worked with us.” If you happen to see a group of women in beautiful kayaks on the water this summer, it just might be Sheri and her sisters and/or their fellow classmates from the NH Boat Museum Boat Building Class. Reflecting on the class, Sheri concludes, “I have a lot more confidence to build things now, which is great.” There could be no better compliment to the NH Boat Museum than the finished kayaks that hold up so well and the students who find joy when launching on the lakes each year. (For information on the boat building classes at the NH Boat Museum, call 603-569-4554, email museum@nhbm. org. Classes do fill up, so call soon! Some scholarships for children are available. The NH Boat Museum is located on Center Street in Wolfeboro, NH.)

Summer Concert Series at 19 Mile Bay Beach The Carolyn Ramsay Band will rock the pavilion at 19 Mile Bay Beach in Tuftonboro, on Thursday, July 6 at 6:30 pm, the first of four free concerts being held at the pavilion in July. The Carolyn Ramsay Band, (CRB) is a collaboration of musical talent brought to life by Carolyn Ramsay lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Jessica Ramsay - lead vocals, harmony and rhythm guitar, Chuck Farrell - lead guitar, Bud Clark - bass guitar, and Mike Chatigny - percussion and backup vocals. After knowing one another for years, the group formally became a band in 2012, with the goal of doing what they are passionate about and bringing music to central New Hampshire. Picturesque Wolfeboro is home to CRB, whose style of music mimics the beautiful environment. With roots in rock and folk music, their soulful style leaves a joyful impression on their
audiences. Next in the series is the Sweetbloods on July 13. Janet and Phil Sanguedolce are a local acoustic duo from Meredith, NH. Their music is well known in the Lakes Region/White Mountains area, and they specialize in blending tight vocal arrangements with tasteful guitar accompaniment. The series is presented by Meredith Village Savings Bank, and coordinated by Tuftonboro Parks and Recreation. All concerts begin at 6:30 pm, and seating is on the lawn or beach so please bring your favorite chair or a blanket. While the concerts are free to the public, a free-will offering will be accepted and concessions sold, with proceeds benefitting the Tuftonboro Scholarship Fund. Cabaret Fundraiser with Rebecca Robbins Desserts, drinks, a silent auction… and a special Cabaret style show as the sun sets over the lake. On the evening of Thursday, July 6, Great Waters Music Festival will hold a fundraising event at the beautiful Pinckney Boathouse on the Brewster Academy Campus in Wolfeboro. The event starts at 7 pm and will feature desserts, a cash bar, silent auction and a very special Cabaret style performance by Broadway star Rebecca Robbins. Broadway singer and actress Rebecca Robbins will share an intimate evening of songs and stories about her adventures while on tour with The Phantom of the Opera. From being in Cleveland when the Cavaliers won their first NBA Championship, to Louisville for the funeral of Muhammad Ali, to performing at The Kennedy Center for Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber himself, her stories are told through an eclectic mix of music that includes songs from Broadway as well as Johnny Cash, Adele, Paul Simon, and many more. Come experience this love letter to some of America’s greatest cities as seen through the mask of the Phantom. Rebecca will be joined by her friend and collaborator, Dr. Christopher Shephard, who will be accompanying her on the keyboard. Rebecca comes directly from a fourmonth run of Jerry Herman’s musical revue, Jerry’s Girls at the historic Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia.

Prior to that she toured North America for almost two years with The Phantom of The Opera where, along with playing her roles as Madame Firmin and The Confidante, she has also played opera diva Carlotta Guidicelli at theatres across the country, including The Kennedy Center, San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre and Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre. Prior to joining the tour, Rebecca was a member of the Broadway company of The Phantom of The Opera, playing the Majestic Theatre for almost three years. Other Broadway/off-Broadway credits include A Tale of Two Cities, My Fair Lady (NY Philharmonic), The Pajama Game, Fiorello, Fanny, Music in the Air and The New Moon (City Center Encores!), as well as Wallace Shawn’s The Music Teacher, which she recorded for Bridge Records. York City, she has performed at such legendary venues as The Friars Club, Birdland, Sardi’s and The Metropolitan Room. In 2015, Rebecca made her network television debut on “The Late, Late Show with James Corden” in a segment where James joined the cast of The Phantom of The Opera as Fop #2 in a live performance at The Hollywood Pantages Theatre. She also lent her voice to the soundtrack of the multiple award-winning film short, The Secret of Joy, a film raising awareness for pediatric cancer directed by Max Bartoli, which featured Doris Roberts and Jack Betts. A very special soloist who has ties directly to the beautiful Lakes Region, Rebecca first visited Wolfeboro with her family when she was eight years old. She and her family immediately fell in love with the area and have returned every summer. In 2004 her parents finally decided to become home owners in neighboring Tuftonboro, a home which she has since inherited
and still enjoys coming to whenever she can. Rebecca fulfilled a childhood dream in 2013 when she performed at The Great Waters Music Festival with the Hillyer Festival Orchestra. The response from those who attended was so overwhelming that Great Waters asked her to return for a special performance with the Festival Chorus Orchestra 2014. Even the production crew and volunteers were impressed with her extreme enthusiasm and effervescence. Smiling and laughing and happy to meet fans in the lobby for autographs and pictures, long after the end of the performance, is proof that Rebecca is the type of performer everyone can’t help but love. Rebecca is an alumna of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and also holds a BA in music from the University of Charleston. She is a proud cancer survivor, an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and when not on the road performing, she can be found relaxing in a hammock at her home in Tuftonboro. For more information, visit www.rebeccarobbins.com. The special event is sponsored by Fidelity Investments, Maxfield Real Estate, Northeast Delta Dental, GI Plastek, and The Granite State News. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Information and tickets for all performances are available at the office at 54 North Main Street in Wolfeboro, by calling 603-569-7710, or online at www.greatwaters.org.

Melvin Village Church Requesting Items for Auction/Fair! Have you enjoyed attending the Melvin Village Fair/Auction in past years? Do you have used items that you might like to offer for a good cause? If so, please mark your calendar for the drop off days of July 8 and 15. This is the second year of having both the Auction and the Fair on the same day at the Melvin Village Church. The Fair takes place on Saturday July 22. Say a committee member, “We greatly depend on the kindness of
contributions from you, the wider community, to accomplish our goal to provide the area with familiar activities and offerings for this annual event.” The fair begins at 9 am with an 11 am with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the event, and then this signals the start and it lets the public loose to enjoy the fair! In past years, the morning event included such things as interactive games and challenges for children, tasty foods to purchase, used

books and DVDs, videos, and even records for both adults and children, a collection of china and glassware articles, furniture, toys, tenting items, exercise machines, plants, household items, skis, crafts, baked goods and art items. Throughout the day, plan to walk the short distance to Willing Workers Hall for a Boutique, where you can treat yourself to a fine assortment of clothing and household linens for the family, too. Come to find treasures and bargains. To bring some toe-tappin’ sounds to the event, the three-person Moose Mountain String Band will be playing between 9 and 11 am. From 11 am until all items are gone, take a seat under the canopy and try your hand at bidding for some select items at the auction. In past auctions, shoppers have been able to win major items, such as gift certificates, antiques, boat trips, old cars and other motor vehicles, tea parties, dinners, services such as baking, yard work,
tools, skiing equipment, furniture, artwork, or whatever creative articles people wish to contribute. Do you have something to offer to this event? Please check through your closets, drawers, extra rooms, cellars and offices for articles you don’t use, but ones that might become “other people’s treasures” for the fair sale of the day. Your contribution of articles to this event will be greatly appreciated and help us to raise even more funds for the church and community causes. The Barn across from the Melvin Village church will be staffed to receive donated items from 9 am to noon on July 8 and 15. All articles in good condition are accepted except televisions, computers, sewing machines, pianos, pillows, mattresses, baby furniture and upholstered furniture. Please do not leave articles outside the door or shed areas, but come in person on the above dates. Arrangements can also be made to have larger articles collected at your house by calling 603-544-9661.

Beauty and the Beast to be Presented by Gafney Library The Gafney Library in Sanbornville is pleased to present “Beauty and the Beast” performed by the Hampstead Stage Company. The play will be performed on Saturday, July 8, at 10 am, in the Wakefield Opera House in Sanbornville. All ages are welcome to attend free of charge. “Beauty and the Beast” is a classic French tale of a young girl, Belle, who is sent by her father to live in a beautiful palace with an outwardly
terrifying beast. The Beast must help Belle to discover his inner beauty and to help her break the spell that has kept him locked in his beastly state. This interactive play, including children and adults from the audience, is performed by professional actors, in full period costume, playing multiple roles. The play is one of the many programs scheduled during the library’s 2017 Summer Reading Program “Build a Better World”. Information

New Libby Museum Program Immerses Teens in Outdoor “How-Tos” By Barbara Neville Wilson Photos courtesy School of the Forest The early-teen years are magical for discovering oneself outside the cocoon of the familiar. We’re lucky in the Lakes Region. “Free range” children are more the norm than the exception. Bike rides downtown, maiden voyages on the lake, and hiking expeditions to territory outside the realm of Mom and Dad create wonderful memories, build independence, and hone skills transferable to school, relationships and life. This summer, Wolfeboro’s Libby Museum has partnered with the School of the Forest on a new program that takes “free range” in the outdoors to the next level. Titled simply “Outdoor Skills,” the program introduces 11- to 14-year-olds to base skills for survival outdoors. How do you cook? How can you protect yourself in the wilderness? How do you keep yourself and the environment around you safe? From August 14 to 20, participants will do wood carving projects, experiment with cooking skills and equipment, and learn how to build weatherproof camp habitats at the Libby. Led by Christopher Russell, an environmentalist by academic training and an alum of the Jack Mountain Bushcraft School of outdoor “How To,” the program will introduce young people not only to facts, but give them the first tools to “live in the outdoors,” says Christopher. They will not just learn how to “live in it” or “just

the ecology, but they will know the environment and their place in it.” According to his biography, Christopher is “a passionate outdoorsman, photographer and writer who enjoys having the opportunity to share that passion with young people. He has solohiked half the Appalachian Trail, canoed in the north Maine woods and camped out anywhere he could find a flat site for his tent, including the hills of Arkansas, the mountains in Nova Scotia and as much of his native Maryland as possible.” Perhaps because of the voracious appetites of tweens and early teens, Christopher predicts the cooking

portions of the program will be particularly popular. “We’ll attempt friction fires,” he says. “It’s a pretty hard thing to learn how to do, but kids love trying,” and they will make birch bark bowls and boil water in them. The day camp, running 10 am to 3 pm, sounds like it will fulfill the dream of anyone who has ever read the perennial favorite “My Side of the Mountain,” by Jean Craighead George, or imagined leaving civilization for long periods. And although this class is strictly for young people, it came out of conversations between Christopher and Tim Smith, a Wolfeboro

resident, registered Maine Guide, founder and head of The Jack Mountain School of Bushcraft in Masardis, Maine. He was described by the “Discovery Channel” as “the most accomplished backwoodsman you will ever meet.” After becoming discouraged working in the non-profit world, Christopher had taken Tim’s Wilderness Bushcraft Semester at the Jack School to get back in tune with himself and his surroundings. He found the Jack school online, applied for and received one of its rare scholarships, and soon found himself immersed in bushcraft, education about edible and medicinal plants, tracking, weather prediction, orienteering, off-grid homesteading, hunting and fishing, and life without the trappings of modern life. Well, one semester led to another opportunity, the Boreal Snowshoe Expedition, to another, and finally Christopher was one of Tim’s star pupils. One day, they were talking, and both said they wished they had had something like the Jack School around when they were younger. Talk turned to action and suddenly they found they had planned a full program semester for youngsters called The School of the Forest. It launched with day programs this spring, and an after-school program is planned for Wolfeboro. “It just made sense to be in Wolfeboro,” Christopher says. “The New England area offers so much versatility.” The Outdoor Skills program at the Libby is a modified • Libby Continued on page 18

Hike and Fish with the Squam Lakes Association Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Friday, July 7 from 9 to 11 am for a morning walk at Whitten Woods to discuss native plant species of the Squam Lakes area. SLA conservation intern, Tamara Few, will talk about the important role native flowers play in regard to pollinator species, the physical characteristics of native plants that benefit the environment, and why native plants should be incorporated into home gardens. Native plants and flowers are fundamental to the workings of an ecosystem such as a forest or prairie, and have been evolving since the last glacial retreat around 18,000 years ago. Plant species in the Squam Lakes area have also evolved over time and wildlife, such as pollinators, have specially adapted to the changing plants, climate, and soils of the region. Due to the relationships between plants and wildlife, native plants are key to the overall health of an ecosystem. While hiking in Whitten Woods, participants will walk the trails and identify native plants that showcase the role they play in the environment. Participants will leave with an understanding of native plant species and basic identification skills of common flower species in the region. For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology Program, visit www.squamlakes. org or contact the SLA directly at
603-968-7336. The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology trips throughout the summer. Every Friday, from June 16 through August 18, the free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Squam Conservation interns who spend their summers on Squam performing important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission. SLA Announces 3rd Annual Bass Fishing Tournament Series The Squam Lakes Association announces the 3rd Annual Squam Canoe Classic bass fishing tournament series of 2017. The first of two tournaments is quickly approaching on Saturday, July 8. The fishing series is all about the love of the lake, having a great time on the water, and landing the big one!

Returning this year is a special partnership between the Squam Lakes Association and Eastern Adaptive Sports (EAS), allowing adaptive anglers the opportunity to fully participate in the event. This tournament series is a motor less event and will be open to any vessel that’s completely human powered with the exception of the Adaptive Angler category. This is an opportunity to test your skills in a laid-back way and to introduce beginner anglers to the art and pleasure of recreational fishing. Seasoned pros alongside the most amateur anglers will love this event. • Libby Continued from page 11
version of the longer programs. Christopher is excited about working with the Libby this summer and the opportunities he and the School of the Forest will offer in after-school programs and through Global Awareness/Local Action (G.A.L.A.) this fall. Not all kids like to do sports, he says, but these programs let kids get outside and enjoy the outdoors while learning skills they’ll be able to practice all their lives. One thing Christopher has learned in the first short programs the School has offered is a need to be flexible in his planning. “It’s sort of impossible to predict what will take the keen mind of a kid,” he says as he recounts an incident during a Plant Identification and Pressing Workshop. “There was a kid up from Boston.” He was the littlest kid in the group, just kind of tagging along because he had older siblings there, “and I just sort

The two-part fishing series is a very approachable bass tournament experience with plenty of goodnatured sportsmanship to go around. Load up the canoe, kayak, float tube or any style of human powered watercraft and head out for a day of timeless moments on Squam Lake. Quietly ease up to that favorite fishing hole and use all your skill and cunning to hook yourself a winner. The tournament series will be open to any vessel completely powered by human effort such as a canoe or kayak. Participants must fish with lead-free tackle such as steel, tungsten, or any other environmentally safe products. It will be a catch and immediate release tournament. Anglers will document their catch by measuring and taking a photo and then release the fish back into the deep where the legend can swim on. of mentioned that 100 years ago, people would boil pine needles to make tea. It’s a great source of Vitamin C.” After that, the boy was fully engaged, stuffing pine needles into his father’s pockets to make tea later, picking up samples and asking Christopher if they’d make a good tea, too. “There’s something to be said for getting outdoors, and being able to be comfortable in it, and doing it earlier rather than later,” he says. Often people tend to think of an outdoor activity as a time to “conquer” nature. “Tim and I see it as more of a ‘romance’ with nature. We just want to be in it.” And encourage others to feel the same. To register an 11 to 14 year old for “Outdoor Skills,” which takes place from August 14 to 20 at The Libby Museum, call museum director, Alana Albee at 603-569-1085 or email director@thelibbymuseum. org. Summertime Churches Bring Charm to the Lakes Region By Sarah Wright You can’t miss it. Summer residents and tourists have arrived in the area. It’s fun to see the various license plates, and my sons always comment on the faraway ones. “Wow, Wyoming! They’ve come a long way!” But who wouldn’t want to visit the Lakes Region at this time of year? There’s really nothing like it, with all the natural beauty and myriad of things to do. Some local town populations grow by the thousands at this time of year. And you may not know it, but there are churches that are just opening their doors, coming out of hibernation in time for the summer season as well. One such church is St. John’s-on-theLake Chapel on Bear Island in Meredith. For obvious reasons, this church is not open in the wintertime, but from late June through August, pastors from local churches take turns leading Sunday morning worship. There’s an interesting history behind the church as well. The idea of having a church on the island began back in the early 1920s. The Rt. Rev. Edward Melville Parker, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire and the Rev. Kenneth Ripley Forbes of Stamford, Connecticut and Birch Island, thought that a summer chapel should be built at the highest point on the island. An observation tower, which was built around 1900, was already standing at the spot. In 1926, after Bishop Parker’s death, a piece of land was purchased by the Rt. Rev. John T. Dallas for the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. He had the observation tower repaired and enclosed, and then local stone was used to build the sanctuary in the summer of 1927. The church was meant to be a religious center for the scattered island residents, regardless of religious affiliation. Rev. Kenneth Ripley Forbes was in charge of weekly services, and
Ripley Forbes, the son of Rev. Forbes, took on the position of President of the Association. Regular services were held and led by clergy of various denominations, making it a more ecumenical church. That same year, a new 200-lb. bell was donated to replace the original tower bell, which had been stolen. An organ was donated in 1967. The beautiful chapel, with an altar and lectern made of white birch, is a sight to behold. The church also contains 10 Roman Arch memorial windows. In August of 1976, the deed to the church was turned over to the St. John’s-onthe-Lake Association for one dollar, with the stipulation that the church will revert to the Diocese if it is ever used for anything other than religious purposes. Worship services at St. John’s-onthe-Lake Chapel are held on Sunday mornings at 10 am, and well-behaved dogs are welcome. The Chapel will celebrate its 90th birthday on July 23. This year, there will also be silent meditation at 4 pm on Sundays, as well as yoga classes at 10 am on Mondays. A full summer schedule can be found at www.stjohnsonthelake.org. The sched-

Worshipers from the Weirs would show up by boat and park at the church docks in Deep Cove. At this point, the church did not have an organ, so the Reverend’s wife would lead the hymns. At the end of each service, parishioners would climb up the tower stairs to enjoy the view from the top. After Rev. Forbes resigned, regular services ceased; World War II gas rationing made things difficult as well. In 1954, the St. John’s-on-the-Lake Association voted to provide funds to keep the church open. The Association, working with the Diocese, took over the church’s financing needs and

• Churches Continued from page 19 ule includes visits from ministers of the Episcopal, Methodist, American Baptist, and Catholic faiths, among others. To reach the chapel, transportation by boat is necessary. Docking is available at the church docks, located on the north shore of Deep Cove, on the south-west side of the island. A marked trail leads from the docks some 1,000 ft. up the hill to the chapel. (Other paths are marked from locations around the island.) Another summer island church is located on Squam Lake, in the town of Holderness. Called Church Island, it is a non-denominational chapel located on Chocorua Island. A beautiful and peaceful place for worship and meditation, this outdoor chapel welcomes all who would like to attend services on Sunday mornings from late June until the first Sunday in September. (During inclement weather, services are held at the “Playhouse” of the Rockywold-Deephaven Camps.) This year marks the 114th season of
Church service at St. John’s Chapel on Bear Island. (Courtesy photo) the church located on the site of America’s first resident boys’ summer camp. The camp was established in 1881 by Ernest Balch and was in operation until 1889. Religious services were an important part of the camp’s activities. orua Chapel Association, “for the purpose of religious services according to the form of the Protestant Episcopal Church.” Clinton Crane, the owner of the island, made it available for worship services, and in 1928 he generously donated it to the association for that sole purpose. For 38 years, Dr. Clifford Twombly, one of the founders of the Association, conducted services. Since 1941, services have been led by clergy of various denominations, many being summer residents of the Squam area. (A list of preachers and pictures of the original boys’ summer camp are in the Memorial Book near the entrance to the chapel.) The number of people dedicated to the chapel’s care and operation has grown over the years, and the desire for natural simplicity has endured. Services are held on Sunday mornings at 10 am. Ministers on the schedule this summer include those from the Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and United Church of Christ faiths, among others. A detailed schedule is available at www.churchisland.org. The Chapel Association permits the quiet, limited use of Chocorua Island by visitors will-
ing to respect it as a religious sanctuary. The island docks are closed between sunset and sunrise. A limited number of wheelchairs, specifically configured for the rough natural terrain, are available on the island by request. The outdoor chapel is only accessible by boat. Transportation to Church Island services is available to the public through a pontoon boat shuttle provided by Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. The cost for the round trip is $10.00 per person and it leaves from the launch on Route 113 across from the Science Center parking lots at 9:30 am. Reservations are recommended by contacting the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center at 603-968-7194 or at www.nhnature.org. Take a drive along rural Route 109, through Mirror Lake, and the 1864-era community church will welcome you to town with its architectural simplicity and beautiful hydrangeas. Now under the control of a local council, the Mirror Lake Community Church was once the Second Christian Church of Tuftonboro. Since then, a number of improvements have been made to the building and the Mirror Lake Church property, located on the corner of Tuftonboro Neck Road. In recent years, a parking lot was constructed in the back of the church, and, following the end of the 2015 season, the church steeple was renovated. Services at this summer church are held from late June until September with guest ministers and local musicians offering inspiration. All non-denominational services start at 10 am, with refreshments and fellowship following every service, often outside in the shaded church yard (weather permitting). For further information, call 603-569-6541. Take in a part of our local history and visit one of these beautiful churches this summer. It’s truly a unique experience!

For the second week in a row, the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand will be welcoming a new act to Cate Park for the free Saturday night concert series. On Saturday, July 8, Acoustic Radio will take to the bandstand for the second concert of the summer season. Acoustic Radio is a Seacoast-based band consisting of four musicians who bring a combined century-plus of live performance experience. The band consists of Rick Twombly (who played with Heavens to Murgatroid, It Figures and Monday Men), Don Berrios (who played in 3rd Degree and Gang of Weasels), Chris Boyle (who played in It Figures and the Fabulous Watermans) and Mike Waterman (who played with the Fabulous Watermans). Although the name is new, the players are well known and have a large following around New England. They feature strong vocals and harmonies and a diverse set list, making for a party atmosphere wherever the band performs. The band’s influences vary, running the gamut of everything from alternative to classic rock and country, which gives the band a good base to entertain any crowd. The band recently released its debut CD, “New Breed”, and it has been met with local and national independent radio play and downloads from around
the world. The set list is quite varied and offers up a unique grouping of songs. Songs that may be featured on Saturday night in Wolfeboro could include hits from classic rockers Steve Miller Band, Bryan Adams, The Who, Eagles, Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones, as well as songs from country artists Zac Brown Band, Darius Rucker, Big and Rich, Garth Brooks, John Denver and Kenny Chesney. The list could also include songs from recent acts, including the Lumineers, Green Day, Kid Rock and Semisonic and the addition of Jim Croce, Van Morrison, REM, the Monkees and Jimmy Buffett; there’s bound to be something for everyone when Acoustic Radio takes the stage. Acoustic Radio will play at 7 pm on Saturday, July 8. The Saturday night concerts are presented free of charge by the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand, start at 7 pm and run to 9 pm. There is a pass-the-bucket offering taken at intermission to help the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand continue to provide these free concerts each week. If there is the threat of bad weather, the concert will be cancelled and a sign will be posted at the entrance to the park near the town docks. There will also be announcements placed on the band’s website at wolfeborobandstand.org.

Lawn Diseases Flourish in
Wet, Humid Weather
Fungal lawn diseases such as leaf spot, red thread, summer and brown patch thrive in moist environments. Damage can range from aesthetic concerns to thinning or significant turf loss. Avoid mowing lawns when wet and don’t water in the early evening. In serious cases, a fungicide application may be warranted either as a preventative or curative spray. Think your lawn has a disease? Young Emerging Artists Exhibit at the Libby Museum through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. The Libby is a place to explore the wonders of nature and art, either in a formal activity or by wandering through the museum and the grounds. More information about museum
happenings can be found at www. thelibbymuseum.org, on Facebook, or by calling 603-569-1035. Located at 755 North Main Street in Wolfeboro, the museum exhibits a collection of natural history and wildlife from New Hampshire and around the world.
Young emerging artists (left to right) Erika and Jenna Burgess and Nicki Aponas will exhibit their original artwork at the Libby Museum during July. Three local high school students will exhibit their photography and art at the Libby Museum in Wolfeboro throughout July. The show is titled, “Young Emerging Artists” and will highlight the work of sisters Jenna and Erika Burgess, and Nicki Aponas. All three young women are Gold and Silver Key winners, chosen from more than 2,000 participants, in New Hampshire’s 2017 Scholastic Art Awards Competition. All three are also from Wolfeboro. Jenna Burgess is a recent Brewster graduate and will attend Maine College of Art in Portland in the fall. On exhibit are her digital illustrations, paintings and cartoon portraiture which are unique and intriguing. Her illustrations have a lively accompanying story and her delightful cartoon illustrations raised over $150.00 at the school’s auction. Jenna also does portrait work (commissioned).
Equally talented sister, Erika Burgess, finds her passion in photography, experimenting with double imaging, and levitation photography, and pushes her compositions to find the most interesting format. Nicki Aponas, won four awards in the scholastic competition and gold key awards; her work is elegant and brilliant. New Libby Museum director Alana Albee came up with the idea to feature young artists. “When I saw the students’ work at Brewster’s art award ceremony, I was amazed and thought they deserve to be seen more widely. As director at the Libby Museum, I’m delighted to host the young artists. Encouraging young artists is definitely in keeping with Dr. Libby’s flare for art, and much of the students’ work shares his fondness of the beauty of our local area.”. The show is on view during regular museum hours, Tuesday

Carrying on a 20-Year Tradition with the Jewish Food Festival By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper “It started 20 years ago as a light fundraiser,” recalls Irene Gordon. “We served Borscht (beet soup) and blintzes and knockwurst.” Irene laughs as she remembers back over the 20 years of the very popular Jewish Food Festival. “Come early!” she stresses. This speaks to the popularity of the event, which takes place on Sunday, July 9 from 11 am to 2 pm at Temple B’nai Israel at 210 Court Street in Laconia.
Temple members refer to Irene as the matriarch of the event. She shakes her head and seems embarrassed, but indeed her contributions have been many. She is obviously a great cook and willing to share her recipes and expertise and her sunny personality makes her a magnet for those who wish to participate. “We have a lot of great cooks in our membership,” Irene explains. “They share their own recipes from their own cookbooks and we have adapted some of them.”

Irene stresses that each dish is made from one recipe, such as the blintzes are made in huge batches, but from one recipe for consistency. At the Temple, Irene and fellow workers are cooking just about every day, as well as pricing and boxing up items for the white elephant portion of the event. The volunteer chefs start cooking well ahead of time and the smells wafting from the Temple’s kitchen set one’s mouth watering. “We are the only Temple in NH to do a festival like this,” Irene continues. “Our Temple has been here since 1937; before it was built we met in individual people’s homes.”
Jewish cooking, according to Irene, represents many cultures and it blends those cultures into the recipes used for the large variety of foods. The volunteer chefs – about 25 of them – work in teams with team captains and all food is made right in the Temple kitchen. “We cook authentic foods, but we do buy pastrami, corned beef and tongue,” Irene says. The list of foods for sale at the Festival include knishes (potato and meat); blintzes; sandwiches – corned beef, pastrami and tongue; chopped liver; half sour pickles; • Jewish Food Continued on page 33

Tuftonboro Library Gears Up for Summer There’s lots going on at Tuftonboro Library (TFL) this summer, with special programs and events for all ages and interests. The library’s Summer Reading Program for kids, Food for Friends, will again match youth readers with adult sponsors, who agree to donate one item per book read to the Lakes Region Humane Society. Kids who sign up to read for pleasure will get a reading log, pencil, and bookmarks, and can post an autographed “dog biscuit” on the door every time they come in. Adult sponsors will receive a shopping list of the Lakes Region Humane Society’s mostneeded items to fulfill their pledges. Sign up at the circulation desk. The library’s two book groups for adults will continue to meet
throughout the summer. The newly formed Readers’ Book Group gathers on the third Wednesdays at 10 am. The book for July 19 is “March” by Geraldine Brooks, and copies are now available at the desk. The History Book Group meets on the last Wednesdays at 7 pm and for July 26, they are reading “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging” by Sebastian Junger. Advance copies now available. Both groups welcome new members. The Saturday Writers’ Group will also continue to meet weekly throughout the summer, from 10 am to noon. All ages are welcome. Please bring a sample of your writing in any genre to share with the group. You can count on helpful feedback.
Through August 11, Friday mornings at 10 am are reserved especially for kids. On July 7, Squam Lake Natural Science Center naturalists will introduce three live creatures of the night, and provide a close look at these elusive nocturnal animals. July 14 brings Mad Science to the library, with robots, rockets, kung fu, and more. Remember that albino python? Reptiles on the Move makes a return engagement on July 21. Learn how to knot your own authentic paracord bracelet at the Cool Craft Workshop on July 28, and on August 4, make an original puppet and stage a play. On August 11, the library will pack up all of the Food for Friends donations, present SRP certificates, and celebrate with ice cream sundaes. No registration is necessary for these programs, but early birds will get the best seats! Freestyle Family Crafts are on offer Saturday mornings through August 12. Drop in any time from 10 am to noon, and make something fun to take home. Different craft options are offered each week, and it is always something even the youngest crafters can manage. And everyone can beat the blues with Rainy Day Family Movie Matinees at 11 am and 2 pm. The movies are served up with popcorn and lemonade, of course!
TFL celebrates Tuftonboro Old Home Days with a very special Book & Author Breakfast on Saturday, August 26 at 9 am. Enjoy assorted pastries, bagels, quiche, fresh fruit, and beverages, and meet Hal Lyon, award-winning author of “Angling in the Smile of the Great Spirit: Six Centuries of Wisdom from the Master Anglers of Lake Winnipesaukee.” Hal will share stories (okay, whoppers!) from a lifetime of fishing on the Big Lake, including a few of particularly local interest, and books will be available for sale and signing. July’s Artist of the Month is Nick Moore, a fine woodworker whose artistry with a lathe is well worth checking out. A wide range of unique, locally made art and crafts will be on display during August, for the library’s annual Art & Artisan fundraising raffle. Tickets are a bargain at 3 for $10, 9 for $20, or 27 for $50, with all proceeds benefitting the Library Building Fund. Please note that the library will be closed on Tuesday, July 4. Wifi will be accessible from the library grounds, and all remote resources will be available through the library website. For information, call 603569-4256.

Reaching Toward Perfection: Peaceful Shaker Village Story & Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Everything the Canterbury Shakers did was aimed toward perfection. They had an orderly way to go about their days, right down to the way they set a table for dinner or conducted
themselves when speaking to others. While set rules governed their lives, there was nothing fanatical or rigid about their beliefs. Peaceful. Gentle. Loving. Humble. These words are apt descriptions for the way the Shakers lived and the manner in which they approached their religious beliefs. They weren’t out to

prove they were better than anyone else but rather to reach for perfection in everything they did. In spite of the fact that the Shakers at Canterbury have all passed on, their peaceful manner of living can still be felt when you visit Canterbury Shaker Village. Everywhere one looks the Shaker philosophy of making things to last is obvious and their creed passed down from Shaker spiritual leader Mother Ann Lee about work is quite thoughtful: “Do all your work as though you had a thousand years to live; and as you would if you knew you must die tomorrow.” In other words, take your time and make things right, but savor each job and live in the present as if this was your last day on earth. On an overcast Friday in June, I took a few hours respite and headed to Canterbury Shaker Village. Even though I live in the modern world, now and then I find a visit to this special place is a reminder to slow down, look, listen and relax. I traveled Route 106 from Laconia to Belmont and then took Shaker Road, a right turn off the village’s main street area. Shaker Road is rural and very
pretty any time of year, but especially so in summer and when autumn’s foliage sets the trees ablaze. This was not my first trip to Canterbury Shaker Village; each time I visit I get a peaceful feeling when I spot the many buildings and old stonewalls on the property. But first, I passed the very simple, large cemetery that is the final resting place of many of the Canterbury Shakers. A large and well crafted stonewall encircles the cemetery and there is but one large headstone in the center of the burial site with one word – Shakers – carved onto its surface. The cemetery is in keeping with the Shaker belief that the collective community was the most important thing. Just past the cemetery, I took a right hand turn into the big parking lot, with views of the green pastures and forest beyond. A group of cows grazed in the field the day I visited, and they seemed as much a part of the picturesque scene as the greenery and cloudy sky. Canterbury Shaker Village is situated on both sides of Shaker Road, • Day Tripping Continued on page 37

July 3, 2017 and today serving as an exhibition area focused on Shaker furniture and design. The large museum exhibit space houses a lot: old photographs of Shaker men and women, some of the beautiful furniture they made and used, their sewing kits, wooden buckets, cloaks, bonnets and so much more. I gazed at the faces of the Shakers in the old photos and wondered what they would think of modern day folks, with our cell phones and busy lives. “Slow down and live in today,” I could almost hear them say as they smiled gently at me from photographs taken so long ago. In the next room, a video played on a large screen, and it related the story of the Shakers. A few visitors sat rapt as they watched the history of the Shakers at Canterbury and elsewhere unfold. I was particularly enthralled with the next room where children’s toys and a very old child’s bed and crib took center
stage. I gazed at the toys and thought about the many frightened, confused orphans or poverty-stricken children who came to the Canterbury Shakers, unsure of their welcome or what life held in store. Happily, they were loved and cherished and raised with gentle care; just watch the video section of Sister Gertrude Soule speaking about children to feel the Shakers’ love of “little ones” as she called youngsters who were raised among the Brothers and Sisters. (It was the custom for individual Shakers to take an assigned child under their wing rather like a second mother or father.) Some buildings were not open on the weekday I visited, but I was happy to wander among the whitewashed, beautiful old buildings and to walk the roads and paths the Shakers once trod • Day Tripping Continued on page 38

It is here one can pay the admission charge, wait for a tour led by a volunteer or staff member and browse in the gift shop. I think the gift shop is a great introduction to the Village and the Shakers. It is artfully laid out and full of wonderful books, herbs, soaps, handmade Shaker-style wooden boxes, holiday ornaments and other great items. The music playing in the
background the day I visited was soft and melodic. All gift shop items were well made and carefully chosen, in keeping with the Shaker theme and philosophies. My visit took place in the presummer season (a weekday in mid June), and visitors wandered happily through the buildings that were open, but there was certainly the chance to sit quietly here and there and reflect and take in the beauty and serenity of the village. My first stop, across Shaker Road, was the Carriage House, built in 1825

July 3, 2017 It reached its present size by 1837. It was here, on separate staircases, at gender-segregated tables and in areas for socializing, as well as in sleeping quarters, that the Shakers resided. (Men and women worked together, but intimate contact and marriage was against their belief system. Segregation was by gender. (Racial prejudices were not tolerated among the Shakers, who truly believed all were equal.) The building also housed a chapel; today the Dwelling House is open for tours and it is an unforgettable place and a must-do for any visitor. The kitchen at Shaker Village is a vast place, once the location of hustle and bustle, day and evening. Feeding 100-plus Shakers at the height of the community meant big utensils, lots of food and big ovens and shelving. But this was no cafeteria, feed-em-and-getem-out type of cooking and serving. The food prepared here was famed for its flavor – it was delicious, as well as healthful. The Shakers ate plain fare but it was seasoned accordingly and prepared artfully. (One such dish, Eldress Bertha Lindsay’s Rose Water Apple Pie, is famed and quite unique
• Day Tripping Continued from page 37 in their day-to-day lives. (Small lawn flags indicated which buildings were open for viewing.) I History and traces of lives once led were everywhere I turned, but it was a very, very peaceful feeling. Nearby, the Creamery building was open and I stepped right into the history of farming. No one was in the large room and I had the place to myself (I must stress that this was a quiet, rainy preseason day and normally there are tours and visitors enjoying the many features of the village). I gazed at everything, from the posters that explained the dairy industry at the village right down to the super-soft and smooth gold latch on the giant refrigeration wooden door. I marveled at the many hands of Shakers brothers and sisters who turned the latch to open the door as they carried out their chores. There is no doubt the huge Dwelling House is one of the most eye-catching structures at Shaker Village. The building was constructed in 1793 and expanded several times.

Beautiful old buildings at Shaker Village. and tasty, for example.) Used for demonstrations and on the tour, the kitchen is open for visitors. I found it a bit poignant that this space, once so busy, was now so still. It was as if Bertha or one of the other fine Shaker cooks has stepped out of the kitchen and would soon return. The stillness of the rooms and the stoves, now cold, that were once fired up so as to bake the breads and pastries, seemed to slumber, waiting too for the Shaker cooks to return. I moved on and wandered from building to building, until I felt the rain start to fall in a light mist. I was determined to make it to the beautiful, large gardens, once the prize of the Shakers who tended them, before the rain became heavy. I walked the path and there it was, the garden still tended each year by village staff and volunteers. At one time the garden was the salvation for the Shakers; food was expensive and hard to come by during the Depression and World War II years, and the garden provided much-needed food. Knowing the kindness and caring for others that the Shakers practiced, I imagined no neighbor or traveler in need of food was turned away empty-handed when that garden was burgeoning with fruits and vegetables. Beyond the fields the woods beckoned. “Come, walk here,” they seemed to invite. I shook my head, knowing I would be drenched if I did not seek shelter. Regrettably, I had an afternoon appointment, and I did not have time to wander to the Meetinghouse, which many visitors feel is the most spiritual

and historically significant building at the village. It is very old, and has wonderful views of the field beyond. I decided, since it was lunchtime, to eat my mid day meal at the Shaker Lunch Box in the large barn structure across the street. The counter helper greeted me with a smile and told me the soup for the day was chicken dumpling and the other hot food was chili. I chose a squash roll (another fine Shaker recipe!) and the chicken dumpling soup. Sitting at a wooden table, I took my time with my meal and relaxed in the peace and utter quiet of the special place. My afternoon appointment meant I could not spend the entire day at Canterbury Shaker Village. But I planned to return, as I do each summer and fall. Driving onto Shaker Road, I thought about Eldress Bertha, a woman I would have liked to know. I greatly admire her striving for perfection and her gentle kindness toward others. And I like the philosophy of the Shakers to do it right and with care that is so apparent in their buildings, stonewalls and their cuisine, but most of all in their spirituality. I nodded a silent thank-you to the many Shakers who now rest in that big cemetery. I think they would be very pleased to know so many visitors find peace and quiet at Canterbury Shaker Village. For information on Canterbury Shaker Village, visit www.shakers.org or call 603-783-9511. The village is open for tours and to the public with special events; call for admission and hours of operation.

Explore Gilmanton with the Gilmanton Historical Society The Gilmanton Historical Society, celebrating its 50th year in 2017, offers special summer programs featuring the history of the town. All are free and open to the public. Donations to support the Society’s work are always welcome. Explore iconic Gilmanton Corners Village with a walking tour on Tuesday, July 25 starting at 6 pm. Beginning at the Gilmanton Academy building, now the Town offices, the tour will explore the history of the Academy and its neighboring residential buildings. The
Academy is located on NH Route 107, just north of the intersection with NH Route 140. On Saturday morning, July 29, the Society will display a selection of vintage clothing from its museum collection. The exhibit will take place at the Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works from 10 am until noon. All of the items, once worn by Gilmanton residents, have been donated to the Society’s collection. The Old Town Hall is on NH Route 140 in the Iron Works village.
Time for a Traditional Ham and Bean Supper Mark your calendar - put it in your phone – Thursday, July 13 is the date for the next traditional ham and bean supper presented by the women of the Union Congregational Church in Wakefield. The menu will include two kinds of homemade beans, ham, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, rolls, assorted homemade pies, coffee, and lemonade. The cost for this traditional dinner is just $8.00 per adult and $4.00 per child. The meal will be served family style and there will be two seatings: at 5:30 pm and at 6:15 pm. No reservations are taken – it’s first come, first serve, so come early! The dinner will be held in the Reunion Grange-Hotchkiss Commons, across the street from the church. The
ladies of the church have prepared these suppers for many decades, and the meals have become a popular summertime tradition because guests know the food is homemade and the price is low. The Reunion Grange – Hotchkiss Commons is located at 71 Main Street, in the village of Union in the town of Wakefield. There is plenty of parking along the street and behind the church. (Hotchkiss Commons is handicapped accessible.) All proceeds are used by the Women’s Fellowship for outreach within the community and for mission projects worldwide. For more information and directions, call Jennifer at 603-522-6713.
Gilmanton has long been known for welcoming summer visitors. On Tuesday evening, August 22 at 7:30 pm at Old Town Hall, the Society’s vice president, Pat Clarke, will tell us about Gilmanton’s summer hotels which flourished in the late 19th into the
early 20th centuries. The Society’s museum, on the ground floor of Old Town Hall in the Iron Works, is open Saturdays from 10 am until noon during July and August. It is open every other Saturday from 10 am to noon during the rest of the year.

Mill Street Meat Market celebrates a decade of deliciousness Off the beaten track, but worth the stop The Mill Street Meat Market, a favorite among locals and seasonal visitors alike, is celebrating 10 years in business this summer with an expanded product line, a full array of premium beef, lamb and pork – and seafood, including live lobsters for sale. Market founder and owner, Ryan Crowder, launched the combination butcher shop and specialty foods store, located at 67 Mill Street, in Wolfeboro in April 2007 after perceiving the need in the area for a quality butcher shop. He gained his knowledge of the meat and food services business from other butchers and at his parent’s Wendy’s
Restaurant franchise in southern New Hampshire. Growing up in the Nashua, Crowder frequently shopped at the Brazilian butcher shops in the area. Those specialty shops inspired him to open his own shop and, ultimately, he chose to locate it in Wolfeboro, where he has summered with his family since he was a boy. “I practically grew up here – I love this place, absolutely,” he said in a recent interview at the shop, where topquality meats and seafood are chilled under spotless display cases. After conducting a market study and writing

The market, which sells meat, seafood and specialty food items, is located at 67 Mill Street in Wolfeboro. (Courtesy photo Larissa Mulkern) a business plan, Crowder purchased the building at 67 Mill Street, where he then established the shop at street level and saved a bundle in living expenses by moving into the upstairs apartment with his wife, Andreza. Living upstairs from the shop also allowed Crowder to put in the extensive amount of time required to launch and grow the business. “I was able to work a lot, pretty much around the clock, for the first half year,” he said. For a portion of his start-up funding, he turned to the Wolfeboro-based Wentworth Economic Development Corp. [WEDCO], a private nonprofit regional development agency whose mission is to promote and
support businesses and the creation of employment opportunities by providing development assistance and financing. “I wouldn’t be here without them,” said Crowder of the assistance WEDCO provided. In the spring, he said that once the summer season kicks in the shop will employ 11 workers, all trained to provide a high level of customer service. Four employees work year-round. “WEDCO was awesome. They matched the SBA’s [Small Business Administration] loan terms and were instrumental in getting the initial • Mill Street Continued on page 45

I would not have been able to do that without their help,” said Crowder. Growing local business — and the jobs that come with that growth — is what WEDCO is all about. Celebrating a 10-year success story with the Mill Street Meat Market is WEDCO Executive Director Denise RoyPalmer. “WEDCO takes great pride in recognizing the success of its clients and all of the various initiatives we participate in — all to the benefit of stimulating economic development in the region,” said Roy-Palmer. WEDCO provides financing for business and real estate acquisitions, machinery and equipment, working capital, gap financing, renovations and construction and other qualified uses. Its service area includes Brookfield,
Effingham, Farmington, Milton, Middleton, Moultonborough, New Durham, Sandwich, Tuftonboro, Wakefield, and Wolfeboro. Over the years, the shop’s product line has expanded beyond premium meats to include a range of seafood, a live lobster tank, selection of wines, condiments, infused olive oils and vinegars, and other specialty items – enough of a variety within the store for one-stop shopping for an at home meal or barbecue. Top sellers at the Mill Street Meat Market include steak tips and chicken in a variety of marinades. “Marinades are the life blood of the shop,” Crowder added. Many of his products are locally sourced and from farms throughout the northeast. The market’s location offers ample parking, an advantage to not being located downtown, especially during the summer, noted Crowder. “People can pull up, park, shop and go.” The Mill Street Market building includes another unit, once occupied by a local bakery that has since
moved into a larger space. The space is available for rental. This season, Crowder decided against reopening the seasonal annex shop in Wakefield, but he anticipates another busy season in Wolfeboro. In the decade since first opening his doors, Crowder’s family has grown as well. He and Andreza are the proud parents of two young boys, Sam, age 9, and Vincent, age 3. His marketing plan includes local signage, radio, TV and newspaper ads, as well as a commitment to community support and service with gift card donations for benefit auctions and the like. “We support many charities and schools. We’re giving money and gift cards back to the community. I think that is key, especially in a small town.” Aside from stocking delectable edibles, the shop sells t-shirts with fun slogans such as, “We Meat Your Expectations,” and “All About the Meat.” The Mill Street Meat Market, located at 67 Mill Street off Main Street in downtown Wolfeboro, is open every

Exploring the Roots of Rock & Roll in Plymouth The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth presents Texan Los Lonely Boys on Thursday, July 13 and New Orleans based Subdudes on Friday, July 14. Los Lonely Boys’ “Texan Rock n’ Roll,” as the band is described, combines elements of rock and roll, Texas blues, brown-eyed soul, country and Tejano. The Grammy Awardwinning rock band was thrust upon the national scene with the chart-topping hit, “Heaven.” While maintaining that infectiously melodic fusion of styles has long endeared Los Lonely Boys to critics, it’s their live shows that forge a fiercely loyal fan base. “We want to make music that brings people together,” said bass player and vocalist Jojo Garza. “We want to create music that’s about the love and the energy and the spirit that we all carry as people.” If that’s not quite your style of rock, the very next day showcases the

musical gumbo of The Subdudes. The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness - not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear. The finale of each show is a muchanticipated part of the live performance when The Subdudes unplug from the stage and join the audience on the floor to play an intimate and rousing acoustic set. “We get a new life going when we’re out in the crowd singing,” said John Magnie. “Some songs from our eight albums go over really well live - especially when we’re out in the audience playing.” For more information on upcoming shows or to purchase tickets call the box office at 603-536-2551 or visit www.flyingmonkeyNH.com.
