The Thrill is On! ~ $2.6 Million Gunstock Mountain Coaster Opens for Real Fun Following two years of planning and public approval, and nine months of construction, Gunstock Mountain Resort’s $2.6 million Mountain Coaster is officially open to the public, and a Grand Opening ceremony was held on Saturday, August 13. This newest addition to the long list of gravity-based adventures at Gunstock was engineered and manufactured by Josef Wiegand GmbH & Co. Kg of Germany. As the most technologically advanced ride of its kind in New Hampshire, the Gunstock Mountain Coaster measures almost 4,100 ft. in length, descends more than 220 vertical ft. in elevation, and takes about six minutes to complete a full lap. The Mountain Coaster has several advanced safety features, such as autolock harnesses and intelligent distance control assist. Traveling downhill at speeds up to 25 mph, floating through the trees on twisting rails will give riders a fast and exhilarating experience. However, if the thrill gets too intense, riders can control the speed of their individual sled, and Wiegand’s magnetic braking system will keep the sleds at a safe speed as it continually monitors each sled along the track. “The addition of our new Mountain Coaster is vital to the strategic plan for economic sustainability at Gunstock. This attraction is a big deal for the community and I want to personally thank each of the many supporters who helped out with its planning, approval and construction,” said Greg

GAC commissioners John Morgenstern and Steve Nix with GM Greg Goddard and Gunny Bear. Goddard, general manager of Gunstock Mountain Resort. “This family friendly ride is incredibly fun and we intend to operate it winter, summer and fall, giving those who visit or live in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region a near yearround opportunity to enjoy the newest attraction at Gunstock.” “Everyone I talk to is excited to take their first hot laps on the new Mountain Coaster, and they’re going to be thrilled when they do,” said Mike Roth, Gunstock’s director of marketing and sales. “The Mountain Coaster is a blast to ride and we’ve made access affordable as guests can choose between single ride tickets, unlimited rides with a one-day Discover Zone ticket, and avid enthusiasts can even

Store Wide Sale!

select from a number of pass options to ride the Mountain Coaster, and to play at Gunstock all summer long.” Visit www.gunstock.com to learn more about the new Gunstock Mountain Coaster and all of the fun and adventure to be found at Gunstock’s gravity playground. Located in Gilford, New Hampshire, and boasting spectacular mountaintop views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Range, Gunstock Mountain Resort is one of the largest winter and summer recreation areas in the state. Affectionately known as “The Area” by long-time locals since 1937, Gunstock was the first New England ski area to install a chairlift, and it offers 1,400 vertical ft., 227 acres

and 55 alpine ski trails, plus 32 km of nordic skiing and snowshoe trails. In summer and fall, Gunstock claims New Hampshire’s largest aerial treetop and zip line complex, with 91 challenging elements, more than 1.6 miles of highadrenaline ZipTour™ zip lines, offroad Segway tours, and the new 4,100 foot Mountain Coaster. The Gunstock campground has 271 tent sites, cozy cabins and RV/trailer hookups, providing outdoor accommodation for kids of all ages when they stay and play at Gunstock. “The Area” also plays host to a growing number of signature events, such as the July 4th Craft Fair, Craft Beer Relay, Soulfest, and the IRONMAN 70.3 Timberman.

Willkommen to Cabaret! “What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play…” Sally Bowles, the legendary temptress of the Kit Kat Klub in prewar Berlin beckons the audience to join the fun in the classic musical Cabaret. The hit Broadway musical will take the stage at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith through September 3. Based on the book The Berlin Stories of 1945 by Christopher Isherwood, the story of Sally Bowles was original written as a play, I am a Camera, which became Broadway musical Cabaret in 1966 and an Academy Award-winning movie starring Liza Minnelli in 1972. The show got a facelift in the 1990s for a London and Broadway revival starring Alan Cumming. The new version, which will be presented by the Playhouse, was performed at Studio 54 in New York and, according to the director of the Playhouse’s production, Clayton Phillips, “kicks up the sexuality a notch more than the original. It more closely examines the seedy underside of the city.” Those familiar with the original production, or the movie, will get the same iconic Kander and Ebb music and will be familiar with the

storyline of the American writer, Cliff, who moves to Berlin and starts a relationship with the erratic Sally. Also present is the Emcee, the host of the Kit Kat Klub, along with the raunchy boys and girls who make up his ensemble. Another highlight of the story is the touching relationship between Fraulein Schneider, Cliff’s landlady, and Herr Schultz, a Jewish resident who is beginning to question his safety in Berlin. The set, designed by Melissa Shakun, will include a handful of “premium” seats for audience members, which will be at cabaretstyle tables next to the stage. There are a limited number of these premium seats available at each performance, allowing audience members the chance to feel like they are in the club. The admission

for the premium seats includes a cheese tray for the table and a drink for each of the ticket holders. Premium ticket holders will be the only patrons able to bring food and

drink into the auditorium! Sixteen talented performers make up the cast of Cabaret, under the direction of Phillips. Bryan Knowlton provides the choreography and Judy Hayward is the music director. Cabaret is the fifth production of the summer season performed at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse campus in Meredith. For tickets, call 279-0333 or visit www. winnipesaukeeplayhouse.org. The Winnipesaukee Playhouse also offers free educational programs in conjunction with each of the main stage productions. Visit the website for details.

Skywatch at the Gafney Have you ever wanted to see the moon up close or identify the Big Dipper? The Gafney Library in Sanbornville invites you to attend a Skywatch on August 23. Members of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society will return to present the Skywatch at 8:30 pm at Turntable Park in Sanbornville. Participants of all ages will be able to view the night sky through teleescopes. The night sky on any clear night offers an array of everchanging displays of fascinating objects you can see, from stars and

constellations to bright planets, often the moon, and sometimes special events like meteor showers. The cloud/rain date for the event is August 24. A telescope is available for checkout at the library to qualified patrons. For details about this event, drop by the Gafney Library on High Street or call the library at 522-9735. The library hours are 1 to 7 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 9 am to 12:30 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Late Summer Cruise on the Winnipesaukee Belle By Barbara Neville Wilson Lakes are for boating, and the Lakes Region has a long and storied nautical history. Go to the Libby Museum on Winter Harbor and see a Native American dugout canoe dating from the 1600s found beneath Rust Pond. Next year, or maybe the year after, you’ll be able to visit the Mini-Mount, a 50-foot 1/5-scale replica of the MS Mount Washington built in the 1990s, at the New Hampshire Boat Museum. But always better than gawking, is going, and on this Friday afternoon, I take a ride on the Winnipesaukee Belle, a handsome ship that resembles paddle wheelers that plied these waters a century ago. I arrive at the Wolfeboro Town Docks a bit after 1 pm and see the Belle at the docks, gangplank out at the bow. Spying no ticket booth, I ask the man in the Winnipesaukee Belle shirt if I get my ticket on board. He says, “yes” and invites me on. I enter the enclosed cabin on the main deck and join a few other travelers at the ticket counter that doubles as snack bar, too. “Sorry,” he answers a tourist’s question, “we only have cookies left. A group of campers on our 10:30 trip cleaned us out of chips. I can get snacks and drinks once we’re under way.” A little surprised at the reasonable ticket price ($16 adults/$12 seniors/$8 youth under 12), I see, too, that I could charter the whole boat for a wedding or special occasion for just $875 for three hours. Hmmm…divided by 100 guests, that’s not a bad price per head,

Wolfeboro as seen from the Winnipesaukee Belle. and as I head up the stairs to the open air deck, I see the view can’t be rivaled. I’ve ridden the M/S Mount Washington, and been on the lake in a variety of pleasure boats, but this is the first time I’ve been on the Belle. Here, from the second deck, I get a great view of dockside Wolfeboro. It’s sort of the Goldilocks of views: not too high, like on the Mount Washington where the people on land look speck-like, and not sitting directly on the water as in a personal craft, where I see a lot of legs and shoes. It’s just right; I observe without feeling removed.

I settle into a deck chair at a table and run through my last few phone messages before we get underway. Technology is wonderful, but I want to be totally present during our tour. I resolve to use my phone only for photos during the 90-minute cruise.

The covered upper deck is a comfortable temperature on a 90+-degree day. A breeze keeps the air moving while we sit at the dock waiting for the last few passengers. I can see the Belle could have a distinct advantage over some other boats if it were raining: fresh air, but protection, too. I feel the deck quiver as the big engines turn over. We start to back from the dock, and the captain sounds the horn several times. I see him look behind us and almost imperceptibly shake his head. A pontoon boat blithely crosses our path, not more than 30 feet from our stern. My driver’s ed teacher told us to allow one car length between us and the next car for every 10 mph of speed. I wonder what the rule of thumb is for boats the size of the Belle! Soon we hear the captain’s voice. He introduces mate Dick Curran and himself, Capt. John MacDonald, and welcomes us to the Winnipesaukee Belle, the second largest ship on the lake. He gives stats about Winnipesaukee—200 ft. deep in some places, with an average depth of 40 ft. Gilmanton Historical Society presents Gilmanton during World War II on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 pm.

Gilmanton in World War II What was it like to be on the home front in Gilmanton during World War II? On Tuesday evening, August 23, Gilmanton Historical Society vice president Pat Clarke will describe what life was like for the home folk in Gilmanton during the war years. The program, at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works, begins at 7:30 pm. Social hour and refreshments begin at 7 pm. The Society’s museum in the basement of Old Town Hall will be open at 7 pm. The program is the fourth in the Gilmanton Historical Society’s 2016 summer series. Programs are offered

on the fourth Tuesday of each month from May through September. The final program, September 25, brings a tribute to Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book and best known for her campaign to have Thanksgiving made a national holiday. The programs are free and open to the public. The hall is handicapped accessible. The Society’s Museum is open at 7 pm before the program, and Saturdays during the summer from 10 am until noon. Donations to support the work of the Society are always welcome.

We pass the largest home on the lake, Mr. Bahre’s, who brought NASCAR to New Hampshire. It’s for sale for only $52 million. Do you see the outline of the beaten path up to Mount Major? And now we’re in The Broads, the widest part of the lake. The captain points out the Ossipees, the Belknaps, the Sandwich Mountains, homes of note, and I see fellow passengers point to and take photos of their favorites along the way. I focus on the little camps, the places that look like they’re still the same inside as they were in the ’40s and ’50s. I’m probably mistaken; first glance is not always reality. Captain MacDonald reminds us of how people tend to groom their reality when he tells a tale of the press and summer visitor Madame Chiang KaiShek. When he was a child growing up in Wolfeboro, an article critical of her was printed in a national publication. He relates, “She had her employees go out early in the morning and buy all the copies in Wolfeboro so people wouldn’t see.” Magazines gone, her reputation was intact. Too soon, I feel the engines cut back as we re-enter picturesque Wolfeboro Bay. The captain says, “On behalf of the Wolfeboro Inn, Dick and myself, thanks for spending the last 90 minutes with us here on the Winnipesaukee Belle. Enjoy the rest of your summer.” The Winnipesaukee Belle offers public cruises Monday through Friday, 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, and on Sundays at 1 pm through September 4, and on September 5, Labor Day, at 1:30 pm. September 9 to October 16, she runs at 1:30 pm Thursday and Friday, Saturday at 11 am, and Sunday at noon. “Thirsty Thursday” live music cruises run from 6:30 to 8:30 pm through September 8, and charter cruises are available by prior arrangement throughout the cruise calendar. Visit www.wolfeboroinn. com.

• Winni Belle Continued from page 5 erupts in clapping. I take my eyes from the lake view and examine my fellow passengers. The 10 or so tables are full, but the deck doesn’t feel crowded. I see multigeneration family groups, peer groups, and a few couples obviously in love. People move their chairs to get better views, stand at the railing to take pictures or have their pictures taken, and others walk up to chat with the captain. The clapping table obviously includes Brewster alums. Although the hum of the engine drowns out their low murmurs, I wonder if they are some of the many international students the school attracts. Captain MacDonald’s monologue has gotten some attention, but everyone seems to really listen when he points out a home to our left. “That’s Governor Mitt Romney’s house there. He ran for president in, what was it? 2012. And the new construction to the left, that’s his son’s home. Does anyone know Mitt Romney’s real first name?” Our captain waits, then, “Willard, after Willard Marriott. Their families were very good friends. We’ll be passing near the Marriotts’ homes later on.” And so the cruise goes on. Moments to take in nature’s beauty, punctuated by interesting facts and a little name dropping, too: there’s Pond Island, bought by a group of musicians around World War II. They’d give concerts on Sunday evenings. When it was sold, it became known as Melody Island. Oh, and there’s the second largest house on the lake, recently sold by Mr. Appe to the Rothschilds. The president of France stayed there a few years back… for $30,000 a week. Here’s where they filmed the accident in the film On Golden Pond. This area here is prime nesting area for loons. Do you know loons are the only birds with solid bones?

Teen Auditions for Carrie the Musical The Winnipesaukee Playhouse Education Department is holding auditions on August 26 and 27 for teens ages 13-18 who are interested in being cast in October’s production of Carrie the Musical. Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, this newly reworked version of the musical thriller that debuted on Broadway in 1988 is set in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine in the present day. Carrie features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic film), music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment) and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose). Carrie White is a misfit. At school, she’s an outcast who is bullied by the

popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving but cruelly overprotective mother. But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it. Timothy L’Ecuyer will direct the production with music direction by Judy Hayward and choreography by Lisa Travis. Teens interested in auditioning should prepare a song and monologue to perform. They only need to attend one of the audition sessions. For more information, including a rehearsal schedule, or to sign up for an audition slot, visit the Education menu at www. winnipesaukeeplayhouse.org.

Loons of Lake Massabesic On Thursday, Aug. 25, John Rockwood will present a slideshow at the Loon Center in Moultonboro showcasing New Hampshire’s loons with a focus on the loons of Lake Massabesic. Following the slideshow, LPC Senior Biologist/Executive Director, Harry Vogel, will present trends in New Hampshire’s loon population and preliminary statistics on how loons fared in the state over the last year. Held at the Loon Center by the Loon Preservation Committee, the Summer Nature Talks are given every Thursday evening at 7:30 pm during the months of July and August. All programs are open to the public

and have free admission. Come early and browse The Loon’s Feather Gift Shop. Proceeds from the gift shop help fund the important work of the Loon Preservation Committee. Since 1975, the Loon Preservation Committee has worked to preserve the Common Loon and its habitat in New Hampshire through research, education, and management activities. To reach the Loon Center, take Route 25 in Moultonboro, turn onto Blake Road at the Central School. Go one mile to the end and turn right onto Lee’s Mills Road. The Loon Center will be on your left. Plan a Trip to The Libby Museum and See What’s New By Sarah Wright I remember the first time I took my sons to The Libby Museum at 755 North Maine Street in Wolfeboro. I couldn’t believe how many interesting artifacts and animals were packed into the small space. The taxidermy specimens are beautiful, and give the viewer a rare look at some of our local species. Then there are the Native American artifacts, like arrowheads, and a dugout canoe. There are plenty of other artifacts from Dr. Henry Libby’s life as well, including dentistry tools and other popular items from the late 1800s and early 1900s. A recent addition to the unique collection is an old photo album that was found in the attic of Dr. Libby’s former home across the street from the museum. For art lovers, there is a changing art display that currently features patriotic photography by Patricia Smith and primitive art by Frederick Foley. My kids loved the table where they could look at rocks and gems with a magnifying glass or dig for shells in the sand. When I was there to celebrate the Karner Blue Butterfly Family Day last month, we were excited to try out the new Libby Woods Walk, next to the museum. This was the dream of Executive Director Lauren Hammond, and after cutting

some branches and receiving wood chips from the town, it officially opened this season. It’s a short loop through the woods, and even toddlers can manage it. On the day

we were there, the kids participated in a scavenger hunt on the trail, looking for facts about the Karner Blue Butterfly hidden among the trees. It’s also an interpretive trail,

so everyone can learn about and identify the native plants and trees that Dr. Libby originally planted there years ago. Eventually, the museum would like to incorporate some of Dr. Libby’s poetry into the trail. There’s also an area of the woods with a ramp that leads to an old barn’s foundation, and the museum is already envisioning it as a great spot for painters or children’s story time. Dr. Libby’s old hunting lodge is also visible from the trail, although the building is now used for apartments. The story of Dr. Libby is fascinating. I’m sure many people know that he attended Brewster Academy, but did you know that he married his Latin teacher? To make money, they moved to Boston, where Dr. Libby became a dentist, first learning as an apprentice and then later getting his degree from Harvard. He was also an inventor of sorts, devising a method of filling teeth with gold and then discovering that he could burn gypsum in a kiln to make plaster of Paris (which can still be seen at the museum). Dr. Libby and his wife, Hattie, continued to summer in Wolfeboro, eventually moving his house across the ice to where it stands now, across • Libby Continued on page 11

the street from the museum. At the time, he owned much of the coast line as well as Rattlesnake Island. Dr. Libby had always been interested in science and nature. He started making little nature boxes of his collections in order to study them more closely, and then moved on to skeletons and taxidermy. (Most of the animals on display at The Libby Museum are from his original collection.) News of his hobby spread and soon the townspeople were bringing Dr. Libby new artifacts, animals, plants, or bugs to add to his collection. After a while, he decided that he no longer had enough room to house the items, so in 1912, he set about building a public museum to display them. He supposedly used wood from trees on Rattlesnake Island to construct it. The museum was an instant hit, as everyone wanted to take a look inside. Dr. Libby’s father liked to sit out front to greet visitors as they filed in. One particular story that I learned from Sheryll Ross, CoDirector of the museum, was the sensation caused by the “Wolfeboro Cootie.” Now, what on earth is that, you might ask? Well, during World War I, a woman in Wolfeboro received a letter from her son who was on the battlefield. A little licelike bug was in the envelope with the letter. The woman brought the bug to Dr. Libby to display at the museum, and it’s still there today! At the time, it served as a connection to the war, no matter how small. People wanted to see it. Over the years, The Libby Museum has expanded its offerings to include numerous events and

programs. Summer day camps for kids are very popular, with the Lil’ Sprouts science program for younger kids, and the Kidventures history program for older kids. Every Wednesday throughout the summer, a crowd always shows up to see the free Wildlife Adventures show, where visitors can get up close to live animals and learn fascinating facts about them. The free family day event is always a big hit, and this year the museum also hosted a tour on Molly the Trolley to the site of Governor Wentworth’s mansion. It burned down years ago, but the tour group was treated to a wonderful talk and tour by Mr. Frederick Foley. “Mrs. Libby” also gives tours around the museum every now and then, and even hosted a tea this summer for visitors. Next on the calendar for the museum is their Annual Meeting on September 15 at 6:30 pm. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to attend. After the meeting, guest speaker Dennis Walsh from New Hampshire Fish and Game will give a talk about bears in New Hampshire. Raffle tickets are also still available for a beautiful quilt, featuring the Karner Blue Butterfly. The winner will be chosen on October 9, and you do not have to be present to win. The Libby Museum is currently open from 10 am to 4 pm on Tuesday through Saturday, and from noon to 4 pm on Sundays. From Labor Day to Columbus Day, the museum will limit its hours to Saturday and Sunday only, before closing for the season. For more information, call 569-1035 or visit them online at www.thelibbymuseum.org. You can also follow them on Facebook.

Captain Leander Lavallee and the Governor Endicott Talk on Aug. 24 The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in Weirs Beach is hosting a presentation, “Captain Leander Lavallee and the Governor Endicott” on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 7 pm. Leander Lavallee was one of the most famous and beloved steamboat captains on Lake Winnipesaukee. He owned some of the most important steamboats on the lake, including the Governor Endicott, the Uncle Sam mail boat, the Marshal Foch, the SS Mt. Washington and the SS Mt. Washington II. David Warren will present an historical look at the steamship “Governor Endicott.” Warren, through his research, will discuss Lavallee’s career and connection to others in the steamboat business as well as his time on the lake. The Steamship, the “Governor Endicott,” was Leander Lavallee’s first big command on Winnipesaukee and will be a highlight of this lecture. In addition, a scale model of the boat will be on display as he speaks about the “Governor Endicott”. David Warren’s interest in Winnipesaukee steamboat history stems from his 60-year ship modeling

hobby. Models on exhibit at local museums include the Lady of the Lake, the Chocorua and the SS Mt. Washington at the NH Boat Museum, three destroyers, two aircraft carriers and an oil tanker and a diorama of the Bath Ironworks shipyard at the Wright Museum, and the mail boat Uncle Sam, the Chateaugay, the SS Mt. Washington II, and now the Governor Endicott at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum. His current project is a large-scale cutaway model of the James Bell. Articles about his work have appeared in Classic Country Life magazine, the Union Leader, the Weirs Times, the Laconia Citizen, the Baysider and the Boathouse News. David speaks throughout the Lakes Region about the area’s steamboat history. He lives in Melvin Village and Mirror Lake with his wife, Rae Lynn. The event is free for Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society members; for non-members there is a $5 fee with all proceeds going to benefit the Historical Society’s ongoing renovations. The museum is located on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, next to Funspot. Please RSVP to 366-5950.

Nuno Felt at the League The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Fine Craft Gallery invites you on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 9 am to 3 pm to create your own unique Nuno Felted Scarf with individual class instruction provided by juried artisan, Melinda LaBarge. Melinda is a silk and wool artisan specializing in the Nuno felting technique. ‘Nuno’ is the Japanese word for cloth and the technique bonds loose fibers, such as hand dyed silk, merino roving, silk roving, printed silk materials, and other dyed locks onto a sheer fabric silk. The use of floral silks in unique color palettes produces a handmade product that is reminiscent of impressionist paintings. If you have never felted before or if you are looking to take your skill to the next level, this class is for you. Melinda will meet students at their skill level and work with them individually. No felting experience is necessary. There will be an abundance of materials available for students to choose

from to create their own special scarf in whatever design and color they wish to make. View examples of design options at www.meredith.nhcrafts.org/ classes. Additional materials will be available for sale, if students wish to make more than one scarf. Students are encouraged to bring a lunch or snack to satisfy themselves through the sixhour class. Students should bring the following materials/tools to class: three to four bath towels, scissors, pen/paper to take notes, camera (optional) to document process, rubber mat (optional) to stand on and wear comfortable shoes. Please note that this class will be held in Meeting Room B at the Meredith Community Center, which is located at 1 Circle Drive in Meredith, NH. Tuition is $60 per student and a materials fee of $35 paid directly to the instructor on the day of the class. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. Call 279-7920.

New Mount Chef Brings Fresh Approach and Taste When Kevin Fisk joined the M/S Mount Washington crew as head chef and director of food operations earlier this season, he brought with him a new menu, new approach and many years of culinary experience. Fisk has worked in some very notable restaurants since graduating from the University of Las Vegas, including Stouffer’s Restaurants in Princeton, New Jersey; Marriott Hotels in Washington, D.C.; Charley’s Crab in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Legal Seafood in Boston, Massachusetts. He ran his own restaurant, Kevin’s Café in Moultonborough, from 2006 until 2014 and was most recently head chef at Rossi’s Italian Restaurant in New Hampton. In 2014, he launched Lakes Region Catering, where he supplies delicious food for area events and organizations. Fisk brings a love of fresh seafood and his popular “Chef Kevin’s Famous Crab Cakes” to the M/S Mount Washington menu. There will be some staples on the dinner menu, including prime rib and fish, but Fisk plans to switch up the accompaniments and use local ingredients. He has also revamped the Mount’s Fan Tail Grille menu, which offers breakfast and lunch selections to daytime cruise guests, including salads

and homemade sandwiches. “I’ve always enjoyed dining on The Mount,” says seasonal homeowner Rita Johnson of greater Boston. “This year has been the best yet. We love bringing our guests down to the Weirs to dine aboard the Mount Washington.” “I like to keep the ingredients fresh and local when creating any of my food dishes,” says Fisk. “My motto is ‘keep it fresh and simple,’ which is what makes food so much fun to work with. It is always changing, and it is exciting to create new dishes that people will enjoy.” The M/S Mount Washington, and her sister vessels, run until October 16 offering daily cruises from its summer port of Weirs Beach and servicing the ports of Alton Bay, Center Harbor, Meredith and Wolfeboro. Cruising times and options vary, depending on the day and can be found at www. cruisenh.com. Options include daily scenic, sunset dinner dance and island mail delivery cruises. To learn more about the various vessels (Mount Washington, Doris E. & Sophie C.) and to view a more complete schedule with cruise times and ticket prices, visit www.cruisenh. com or call 366-5531.

Eight years later, they were inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame. They also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. The Kingston Trio & America’s Folk Culture The Kingston Trio returns to The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 pm. The trio is widely considered pioneers in the American Folk revolution. These days, it can be rare for a musical act from the mid-20th century to resonate with contemporary audiences. The Kingston Trio is one of the fortunate few that have enjoyed longevity in the music industry. With their vibrant delivery and classic lyrics, the trio has roused audiences worldwide for more than 50 years. The group was the overnight success that sparked a folk revival

and influenced such legendary musicians as Bob Dylan, The Byrds, and Joan Baez. They have recorded over 400 songs, including “Tom Dooley,” which earned them the Grammy Award for Best Country and Western Recording in 1959. That same year, Billboard magazine listed four of The Kingston Trio’s albums among the Top Ten, a feat unsurpassed for more than 50 years. Other hits include the fanciful “Mr. Reverend Black,” the freewheeling “The Tijuana Jail,” and “MTA,” a lively ditty about a man who boards a bus and disappears. The Kingston Trio weaves vivid tales with universal appeal, and

Day Tripping to Franklin Falls Dam Story and Photos By Thomas P. Caldwell In the cool of the morning, shortly after the sun comes up, a short trip with my dogs to Periwinkle Field can provide a positive start to the day. Arriving that early, ahead of the other groups that will come to the Profile Falls recreation area in Bristol, my wife and I can let the dogs off their leashes so they are free to run ahead of us and dash off into the underbrush in pursuit of an animal that left its scent during a nocturnal journey or upon awakening to a new day. Once we reach the field, the dogs will bound through the grass and scrub vegetation while we humans make a loop — or two, or four — around the quarter-mile circle that cars and trucks follow to reach the canoe and kayak launching site or the picnic tables placed alongside the river. Periwinkle Field is a fairly recent addition to the Franklin Falls Reservoir, a section of the Pemigewasset River Valley that came under the control of the federal government following the flood of 1936 and the Hurricane of 1938. Because the Pemigewasset joins the Winnipesaukee River in Franklin to form the Merrimack, a river that continues through New Hampshire into Massachusetts, the downriver towns and cities that were flooded

Part of the solution was the Franklin Flood Control Project. The government bought up homes along the river, and even had the village of Hill pack up and move to higher ground in order to create a containment area for the water that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would hold back with a dam it would build about three miles upstream from the confluence of the two rivers. Related projects were the Blackwater Dam in Webster and dams at Hopkinton

and Everett lakes which, along with Franklin, help to control flooding in the residential and industrial centers downstream along the Merrimack, including Manchester and Nashua in New Hampshire and Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill, MA. Work on the dam got underway in November 1939 and it was completed in October 1943. An earth-fill dam covered with stones to protect the slopes, the dam is 1,740 feet long and 140 feet high, with two gated horseshoe-shaped conduits and a chute

spillway of rock and concrete. The cost at the time was $7.9 million. The dam creates a 440-acre pool that is about seven feet deep, but is capable of holding back 50.2 billion gallons of water on 2,800 acres, extending 12.5 miles upstream — through Sanbornton, Hill, and New Hampton, to Ayers Island dam in Bristol. With the associated lands the government purchased, the project encompasses 3,683 acres. That land, when not flooded, provides an assortment of recreational uses, ranging from walking to bicycling, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, and sled dog racing. Those interested in the dam itself can take a tour or volunteer for some of the educational programs conducted by Franklin Falls Dam. They include trail walks, water safety demonstrations, Junior Ranger programs, and internships for students from local school districts. Access to the dam is from Route 127 in Franklin. The NH Department of Resources and Economic Development’s Division of Forests and Lands works in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to manage the land, planting trees and other vegetation to serve as habitats for birds and other

In addition to the launch site at Periwinkle Field, there are sites at Shaw Cove Recreation Area in Sanbornton and Coolidge Woods Road in New Hampton. Small motorboats also can launch from Shaw Cove. For those interested in picnicking, there are tables at Profile Falls, Periwinkle Field, Overlook, and at the dam, with grills at the dam and at Profile Falls. There are several trails close to the dam, some for hiking and some for biking. Hiking trails range from the short, 1.8-mile Piney Point Nature Trail, with interpretive signs, to the Heritage Trail, which runs the length of the property. Those bringing dogs, as we like to do, will find convenient plastic bag dispensers on the dam side, for picking up after the animals, and bins for disposal. The New England Mountain Bike Association developed a 10-mile trail system for bicyclists, much of it suitable for mixed skill levels. The faster trails are Moose Gully, Pine Snake, Bee, Lost Wall, Rusty Bucket, and Stump. Sniper offers undulating terrain that still offers fast riding. Salmon Brook Trail offers more of a challenge, with steeper pitches, tight switchbacks, bridges, and rock gardens; and Mighty Chicken is a natural half-pipe that has the trail going up and down the ravine walls, with a series of drops and berms. Any of these activities will make a

Kayakers enjoy a day out on the Pemigewasset River, downstream of the Franklin Falls Dam. great day trip, and the dam entrance is particularly popular because of the number of activities offered. While we have hiked many of trails in the flood control area, we had never hiked one of the earliest, the Piney Point Nature Trail, which is on the downstream side of the dam. So, on a hot Monday afternoon, we decided to make a day trip and see what the other side of the dam looks like. Because the day was so hot, and because we weren’t sure what the trail was like, we decided to leave the dogs at home for this hike. It turns out, they would have had a wonderful time, for the trail runs along a peninsula, with plenty of places where they could have entered the water to cool off. With so many other popular trails, Piney Point does not see the traffic it once had. The trail is slightly overgrown, and we encountered two downed trees — one of them a huge pine — that blocked the trail. Surprisingly, while the trail appeared little used, with an ancient picnic table covered in pine needles alongside it,

there were fresh signs of mountain bike use. How the bikes got there, on a section between the two downed trees, we could not figure out, unless they had landed a boat on the point and had bikes with them. Nevertheless, it was a delightful walk among pines, paper birch, and hemlock trees, with still water at the side of the trail. In one spot, a group of kayakers passed downstream, taking advantage of the cooling breezes that blew down the valley. After finishing that loop, we walked along the paved road across the top of the dam, looking down at where we’d been and getting a closer look at the huge concrete gatehouse on the north side of the dam. At the end is a beautiful gazebo, perfect for a picnic lunch and relaxation before turning around and walking back to the parking lot. We did not recall seeing a playground on the property in the past, and it looked quite new, although it was not in use on that Monday afternoon. Most of the trails are on the other side of that playground, and perhaps people do not

usually come by with their children. Those we saw walking along the paved road were adults, out for some healthy exercise. We also like to enter the flood control area from Hill Village or an entrance off Route 3-A in Franklin, and walk along the road through the Old Town, where stone foundations and patches of pavement indicate where the old village of Hill used to sit before it was moved — including its cemetery. At the Franklin end is the stonework for the gates that once led to the Golden Rule Farm, known as New England’s “Boys’ Town” where boys from many walks of life worked together for “an experience in good living.” After it was removed to make way for the dam, the Golden Rule Farm continued to operate elsewhere until 1958 when it merged with the Daniel Webster Home for Children as a new non-profit organization, the Spaulding Youth Center of Northfield. For the hunters, Old Hill Village provides a great place to go after deer and game birds. The NH Fish and Game Department stocks upland game birds and administers a fur-bearer trapping season, as well as maintaining waterfowl nesting boxes in the flood control area. Franklin Falls Dam and its impoundment area offer multiple choices, and the Army Corps of Engineers welcomes other suggestions, as well as making provisions for special events, from Scouting activities to fishing derbies to fire department training. It’s definitely worth a visit, making it one our favorite day tripping destinations.

Only 321 Minutes from Broadway By Barbara Neville Wilson Once upon a time, in the days before the Internet, a theatre-loving young woman in New York pondered a job offer in Wolfeboro, NH. Should she take the job? What was the town like? She flipped pages of the Information Please almanac and discovered the region had a long tradition of community and professional theater. Sold! She moved and lived happily ever after. 2016’s summer shows will soon be filed under “Memory,” but theater continues all year long. Whether you want to join the fun onstage or backstage, get some training, or just want to see a live show, you can find it in the Lakes Region or just a little farther up the road. Wright Museum Commemorates 70th Anniversary of Attack on Pearl Harbor with Photo Exhibit Infamy: December 7, 1941 December 7, 1941, marks a seminal event in American history. At 7:48 am, Hawaiian time, 353 Japanese aircraft attacked the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor, plunging the nation into World War II. The Wright Museum will commemorate the 70th anniversary of that event with a special photography exhibit, Infamy: December 7, 1941. The 66 powerful and gripping photos that make up the exhibit were taken on the scene, during and after the attack. The exhibit will run from August 29 to October 24. The exhibit was developed by the National War Museum of World War II, New Orleans. It is made possible by Pratt & Whitney. Intent on conquering Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, the Japanese launched the surprise attack to cripple the U.S. Pacific Fleet, hoping to prevent America from interfering with their plans. The attack was one of a series of almost-simultaneous strikes on the

American-held territories of Guam, Wake Island, and the Philippines as well as on territories held by the British. The attack shocked Americans everywhere and resulted in some of the country’s darkest days. The attack also pulled the country together and launched America into World War II, putting it on the track to emerge as the leader of the Free World. The Wright Museum of World War II is open to the public for the 2016 season daily through October 31. Museum hours are Monday to Saturday 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday noon to 4 pm. The Museum is a not-for-profit institution focusing on the American home front as well as the war front during World War II and is located at 77 Center Street, Wolfeboro, on Route 28. For more information, contact the museum at 569-1212, Michael. Culver@WrightMuseum.org, or visit www.WrightMuseum.org, or via Facebook.

Shakespeare…and More in the Lakes Region On August 26 at 7:30 pm at the Arts Center at 12 Main in Sandwich, the final event in the summer Studio Theatre Series will be Shakespeare’s Legacy—a montage of Shakespeare clips from Advice To The Player’s (ATTP) history honoring long-time leader and former Producing Artistic Director Becca Boyden. During the performance, see snippets from favorite ATTP actors and roles from the canon as we celebrate the 400-year legacy of Shakespeare and Becca Boyden’s legacy leading ATTP. Please attend to celebrate the past 400 years of Shakespeare’s legacy as well as another 400 for Advice To

The Players, Sandwich’s Shakespeare Company. On Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4, at noon (each day) the Friends of ATTP are hosting a rummage sale at the Arts Center at 12 Main. All of the profits will go to ATTP. Hidden treasures abound when ATTP trustees and supporters clear out their attics and barns at the end of the season. Host a table by emailing jessie@ advicetotheplayers.org or stop by that weekend and be part of the fun. Watch ATTP’s Facebook page leading up to the sale for a preview of some of the wares and items available.

research strategies and interviews to genealogists in seventy-five countries around the world. Cooke is the author of multi-media materials including the Genealogy Gems Premium website, the books Turn Your iPad into a Genealogy Powerhouse, How to Find Your Family History in Newspapers, The Genealogist’s Google Toolbox, and Genealogy Gems: Ultimate Research Strategies, and the video series Google Earth for Genealogy. New Photography Exhibit at The Art Place Nature and landscape photographer Sarah Cail will be the guest artist at The Art Place in Wolfeboro from August 27 through September 10. Her exhibit at The Art Place will open on Saturday, August 27 with a reception for the artist from 5 to 7 pm. The opening coincides with the Wolfeboro Art Walk. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited. When given a “point and shoot” camera seven years ago, Sarah never thought that it would change her life. She planned on taking family and vacation snaps, but it was when she started to really observe the local landscapes, that she became obsessed with creating images. Sarah believes that her ability to reside in both Florida and New Hampshire has contributed to her desire to become a nature and landscape photographer. The mountains, lakes and wildlife of New Hampshire are her subjects while she is here. The four seasons are her motivations. Her perfect day is spent capturing the predawn skies, sunrises, and sunsets as she drives back roads in search of new vistas. Her subject matter is not just the flora, fauna, and scenery of New Hampshire and

Florida. Sarah also travels extensively to photograph. She has traveled to places like the South of France to photograph the iconic white horses of Camargue. Wherever she travels, her camera follows her passion. Sarah states, “Photography is my way of sharing the beauty that is to be seen in the world in an admittedly optimistic point of view. My creative perspective is often ‘up close and personal’ because I love the almost intimate details that we don’t normally attend to in everyday life. My goal is to evoke an emotional response in the viewer that parallels the sense of reverence, or even humor that helped me to ‘see’ the moment of magic that is now captured in time.” Sarah has found inspiration in many photographers, but her mentors have most notably been Rick Samon, known as today’s father of photography; Jared Lloyd, whom Sarah took a workshop from on the Barrier Islands; and John Lopinot, a well-known bird photographer. The Art Place is located at 9 North Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH. Call 5696159 for further information.

Chicken Dinner and Contra Dancing at Tuftonboro Old Home Days Tuftonboro has a weekend full of fun events planned for its first Annual Old Home Days, including an ice cream social, a movie under the stars, a 5K road race, antique car show, cardboard boat race, scavenger hunt and more. After a full day of activities on Saturday August 27, who wants to cook? Head over to Tuftonboro Central School’s Dining Room (205 Middle Road, Rte. 109A) from 5:30 to 7:30pm for a Baked Chicken Dinner complete with salads, rolls, iced tea, lemon aide and desserts. The cost is $5 per plate, to go boxes are available, but who would want to miss the contra dance immediately following the dinner? Tuftonboro Old home Days is pleased to have renowned musician and caller Dudley Laufman along with his wife, Jacqueline, lead the dancing on Saturday August 27, at 7:30pm. The Contra dance will be held at the

Tuftonboro Central School Gym. All dances will be taught. No partner or prior experience is necessary. All ages are welcome. Soft-soled, non-marking shoes are required. Dudley Laufman has been dubbed an “elder statesman of the American Folk Dance scene,” having called his first dance in 1948. He is the bridge generation between the old-time New England village dance tradition and the counterculture revival of contra dancing which began in the 1970s. Laufman has remained true to the historic tradition dance throughout his musical career and he remains a vital and active member of the New England dance circuit. He received the nation’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts in 2009: the National Heritage Fellowship, awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, one of only three New Hampshire recipients over

See Magician TJ Tana Fold A Banana! Story and Photo by Dan Smiley When your kids are almost 5 and 7 and you happen to live 30 minutes from Story Land, you can’t help but end up going nearly every year. In fact, the annual season pass purchase is a great value for our working family budget. One of the many great attractions our boys enjoy most each year is Loopy Lab. This Nerf®-style, ballpit allows children a variety of play activities that kids from 3 to 13 really enjoy. The covered dome structure allows mom, dad and the grandparents to get out of the sun for a little while

too. It’s perfect. Attached to the side of the dome is the Imagination Theatre which annually presents a magician. In the last 5 or 6 years I’ve seen them all; repeatedly. Which is why I was so pleasantly surprised by this year’s performer. At 23 years old, TJ Tana is an upand-comer: the best magician to play this well-trodden stage in at least a half-decade. Age appropriate humor mixed with enough, “how did he do that”, will keep kids from 3 to 93 amazed. The Long Island native Tana started his affair with magic at the age of four and has performed at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas and in Europe

Museum Of Art, UNH, 7,000 Miles From Durham and Alumni Photography Exhibition Two new exhibitions will be on display at the Museum of Art beginning August 31 and running through October 16. A public reception will be held on Thursday, September 8, from 6 to 8 pm. The Museum is open to the public and free of charge. In conjunction with the University’s 150-year anniversary, the museum showcases two exhibitions celebrating scholarly, professional, artistic success for UNH students, faculty, staff and alumni. The first exhibit, 7,000 Miles from Durham, Margaret Carson Hubbard in Africa and Marion E. James in India, guest curated by Catherine Hunter, features work highlighting African and Indian material culture. The works were donated to the Museum of Art by two scholars and intrepid travelers with close ties to the University. Hubbard, a highly regarded African specialist, collected and documented utilitarian and ceremonial

objects made in the 1930s by the Lozi People of Barotseland, while James, professor of history, acquired colorful Mughal and Rajput paintings from the seventeenth to nineteenth century that depict court-life and illustrate literary scenes. This exhibition is funded in part by the Margaret Carson Hubbard African Studies Fund. Also on display, the Alumni photography exhibition will display fifty-five prints by University of New Hampshire graduates. The work is a wide variety of aesthetics and practices from snap shots to professional images. Selections were made by Kristen Gresh, ’97, Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Assistant Curator of Photographs, Museum of Fine Arts Boston. This exhibition and accompanying programs are supported by Friends of the Museum of Art and Public Value Partnership Grant, New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.
