Preserving Beautiful Wooden Boats By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Photos courtesy Harper Boat Sales and Restoration There is a line in the song by country and western singer, Alan Jackson that goes something like this: “You can’t beat the way an old wooden boat rides.” Certainly Jerry Harper of Harper Boat Sales and Restoration in Meredith, would agree wholeheartedly. Jerry spends just about every day, year round, restoring old wooden boats, as well as buying and selling boats and leading interested customers to just the right boat to suit their particular needs. With a lifelong interest in boats and a skill at fixing just about anything (ask Jerry about his hobby of collecting and fixing intricate antique clocks!), Jerry has the knowledge and talent to turn an ailing, paint-peeling, very distressed old wooden boat in need of extreme TLC into a shiny, gorgeous, smoothrunning boat that turns heads wherever it goes on the lake. From his shop on Plymouth Street in Meredith, Jerry is currently working on a variety of old boats, in varying degrees of disrepair. Never fear, when he is done working his restoration magic, the boats will gleam and be the pride of their owners. “I grew up around boats,” he says. “My dad was a boat builder and I had boats before I had cars.” Growing up around a parent who could fix things was a good influence

on Jerry and by age 14 or 15 he was picking up boats and working on them right along with his Dad. After high school, in Massachusetts, Jerry managed gas stations and continued to work on boats on weekends and after work in the evenings. Jerry had vacationed in New Hampshire and loved the Lakes Region for the obvious reason that there are many boats on Winnipesaukee, as well as the area’s scenic beauty. He moved to the area permanently in 1978 and worked on boats for many people. Along the way, his reputation as a skilled boat builder and restorator

grew. There isn’t anything Jerry cannot build or fix and he laughs as he says he even installed the barn boards on the walls of the old Mame’s Restaurant in Meredith. Over time, his business picked up and he opened a boat shop on Rt. 3 across from the former JB Scoops ice cream shop. A self-made businessman, Jerry lists some of the wooden boats he has restored, owned and sold. He had a 35 foot Hacker Craft that was originally built for President Roosevelt. He restored it and made it into a runabout. And he had a 39-foot Hacker that was

built originally for Al Capone! He restored and sold those boats, among others. What is it about wooden boats that so appeal to many people, and thus creates the work for Jerry (it is not uncommon for the boats to be in disrepair)? “It is the quality and workmanship that people like. A wooden boat is an investment.” When asked if the boats are difficult to repair due to their age versus a fiberglass, newer boat, Jerry explains, “I tell people I restore wooden boats and I repair fiberglass boats.” That isn’t to say Jerry dislikes fiberglass boats; in his shop presently is a huge fiberglass boat that he is working on. When finished, it will surely be a work of art as are the wooden boats he restores. Why do the old boats fall into such disrepair? “Well,” says Jerry, “people let them go. They don’t keep them in top notch shape.” Before they know it, the older boat has peeling paint, engine problems, leaks and who knows what else? A few years ago, Jerry purchased a charming Cape house and large workshop property on Plymouth Street in Meredith. He moved his shop to that location with ample room to work on more than one or two boats at a time. Jerry’s website is full of before and after photos and also includes a step-

• Wooden Boats Continued from page 4 by-step “story” of taking aging boats to full restoration. One boat offers a look at the intensive work Jerry does when restoring a boat. “We started off with a 1983 18-foot Century Resorter open utility fiberglass ski boat. We discussed with the customer making it into a mahogany runabout with a fiberglass hull by putting mahogany floors, seats, inside of sides, 1/2-inch decks and dash. We painted the hull burgundy to look like wood and went from an open utility

with a motor box to a split cockpit with an engine hatch.” The job began with stripping out the inside and all the hardware off the decks. After that, Jerry put down mahogany floorboards and striped the floorboard with 1/8-inch black stripes. Next came detailing and painting the engine and installing it. Other work on the boat included adding a mahogany dash over the original fiberglass one and also building new seats, constructing the engine hatch, sanding down the fiberglass deck to make it bondable for the epoxy to bond the new mahogany to the fiberglass deck.

The work goes on until the boat is ready to be put into the water so Jerry can see where the waterline will be. The boat is then complete, with seats, the water line all done and the bottom painted. Harper Boat Sales and Restoration offers a good selection of Classic Runabouts for sale; major wood repairs and refinishing, upholstery and canvas work, storage and brokerage of classic boats, engine overhauling and four, six and eight cylinder engines. In his spare time, Jerry has a new hobby that would at first seem just the opposite of his work on wooden boats. He collects, sells and repairs antique clocks. The clocks in his collection are breathtaking and some are very old. If they are in disrepair, Jerry, with skill at taking something broken and making

it beautiful once again, does necessary repairs. “I find a lot of the clocks online,” Jerry adds. He has taught himself to fix broken clocks of all sizes and shapes, from all over the world. This proves that the skill Jerry has repairing wooden boats can be transferred to just about anything he gets his hands on! If you are looking for a vintage wooden boat, a fiberglass beauty…or a unique and old clock…visit Harper Boat Sales and Restoration. If you already own a boat and know it’s time to repair it, visit Jerry to discuss his ideas on bringing that old wooden boat back to its former glory. After all, you can’t beat the way an old wooden boat rides… (Visit www.harperboats.com or call 279-8841.)

The Lakes Region Fine Arts and Crafts Festival … and its Origins By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Labor Day weekend has historically been a busy time in the Lakes Region. It offers a last hurrah for families before children head back to school and older kids leave for college. The area’s population swells, no matter if it is sunny or rainy, because everyone wants to wring the last bit of summer fun out of the late August/early September days before autumn arrives. Most likely that was the reason three hardworking and industrious Mereditharea residents decided to hold the first fine arts and crafts festival in Meredith on Labor Day weekend. (This year’s Festival will be held on August 29 to 30 in Meredith.) Thirty-five years ago, the Lakes Region Fine Arts and Crafts Festival launched in downtown Meredith on Labor Day weekend with the reasoning that it would be a busy time in the area and that the Festival would offer visitors something new to do. The Festival would be a way to bring something wonderful to the town at a time when summer would typically be winding down. The founders of the Festival knew visitors to the area would be drawn to the high quality of the artist’s and craftsmen’s work in the show. This was a time when the handmade movement was starting to gain in popularity. The Festival founders were correct in that assumption and the turnout for the first event was good, although all those years ago, the concept of an arts

and crafts fair on the Main Street of Meredith was an untried idea. “Three local women organized the Festival,” explains Sue Cerutti, executive director the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce. (For a number of years, the Chamber has been responsible for the fair.) The women, Bobbi Jo Free, Marilyn Ambrose and Mary Guariglia, were all Meredith-area residents. Marilyn Ambrose, with a dance background, has always been a strong supporter of the arts and when asked by Bobbi Jo Free to help plan and execute the Festival, Marilyn was happy to help. “I assisted with the planning,” Marilyn remembers. “The event was Bobbi Jo’s idea and she had the inspiration to do it.” (Marilyn continues

to reside in the Meredith region and is a supporter of arts in the area.) The Festival was a new concept and certainly unique in that the event would see individual artisan’s booths set up on the Main Street. The street would be closed to traffic for the Festival and that was also a new idea! The first Festival was a success and showed what could happen when a group worked together to bring something creative and fun to the town. According to Sue Cerruti, the original idea was to hold a fine art festival on the Main Street in Meredith in order to showcase the work of artists and to provide an outlet for them to display and sell their work. There were about 30 artists the first year (1979) and their booths were

set up on the Main Street area. There were indeed few such events in New Hampshire at the time; perhaps the only larger, successful fair was the annual League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair at Sunapee in the New London, New Hampshire area each summer. The timing was right for a Lakes Region arts and crafts festival, because handmade items were definitely gaining in popularity. “This was before the Mill Falls Marketplace was created in the downtown area,” Sue adds. Once the Marketplace came into being, it attracted an even larger audience. Marilyn recalls that the goal was to offer a premier fine arts and crafts event and she stresses the word “fine”, meaning that quality work was very important. Eventually, the Festival became a much-anticipated yearly happening in its own right and the Chamber made the decision to move the event to the weekend before Labor Day. It was a wise decision and the Festival stands on its own today, attracting many to the Main Street area of Meredith. From the start, the jury process was strict and spaces filled up fast. “Back in its day, the Festival was the only one around and many artists wanted to participate,” Sue explains. The three women who started the Festival ran it for a number of years and then the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce took over the reigns to coordinate the event. Sue was hired

Capitol Steps Coming to Great Waters Musis Festival On Friday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 pm, Great Waters Music Festival will present The Capitol Steps at the Kingswood Arts Center in Wolfeboro. Over 30 years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest, Mock the Vote. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. The Capitol Steps started in December 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began, so co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could

become politicians, then politicians could become entertainers! Their first idea was to stage a Nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin! So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and created song parodies and skits, which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor that was as popular in Peoria as it was on Pennsylvania Avenue. Most cast members have worked

Big Trees of New Hampshire If you want to learn about New Hampshire’s biggest trees, be sure to go to the presentation at the Gilman Library in Alton Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 1:30 pm. Kevin Martin will show and discuss these trees as described in his new book Big Trees of New Hampshire. Attendees will hear how Martin got involved with finding the trees, how lumber from similar trees is used in his

on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats, some for Republicans, and others for politicians who firmly straddle the fence. No matter who holds office, there’s never a shortage of material. Says Elaina Newport, “Typically the Republicans goof up, and the Democrats party. Then the Democrats goof up and the Republicans party. That’s what we call the two-party system.” Although the Capitol Steps are

based in Washington, DC, most of their shows are out-of-town or for outof-town audiences, whether it’s the National Welding Supply Association, a university audience, high schoolers, or State Legislators. In fact, the Capitol Steps have performed for the last five Presidents (six, if you include Hillary). The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program! No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy? Fidelity Investments, Ballentine Partners, HUB International, Baker Newman & Noyes, NHPR and Northeast Delta Dental sponsor the performance. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Information and tickets for all performances are available at the office at 15 Varney Road in Wolfeboro, by calling 569-7710, or online at www. greatwaters.org

boatbuilding work, and how wildlife will use these impressive parts of our landscape. The discussion will cover trees on public land in all parts of the state and where trees are located so you can see them for yourself. City tours of Portsmouth, Nashua and Concord are also described. Books will be available after the presentation for those interested.

Those who play golf may be familiar with the name Donald Ross, the highlyrespected golf course architect and planner. Plan to be at Kingswood Golf Club in Wolfeboro on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at noon for a lunch and unique presentation on Donald Ross at the Kingswood Greenside Tavern. Brad Klein, the author of Discovering Donald Ross, will be the featured speaker. Donald Ross had a hand in the design

of Kingswood’s golf course; Mr. Kline’s presentation will highlight the club and other fine Donald Ross golf courses. A luncheon of shrimp and beef skewers, salads, and dessert will be offered. There is no better way to continue Kingswood Golf Club’s Centennial Celebration than by enjoying a trip back through the history of golf course design Guests are welcome. Please call to reserve; the event is $45 per person. Contact General Manager Wendy Pack at 569-3524.

Cup & Crumb fills a Niche in Moultonborough and Beyond By Larissa Mulkern, Special to The Laker

The aroma of espresso and scrumptious baked goods fresh from the oven greets customers as soon as they cross the threshold of the new Cup & Crumb café and bakery at 84 Governor Wentworth Highway in Moultonborough. Cup & Crumb owners Kimberly and Mike Prause opened the café just in time for the 2015 summer tourism season. They have transformed a 103-year-old vacant building into a business that fills a niche in the community. The business was several years in the planning stages, Kimberly, a former English teacher and Assistant Principal at Moultonborough Academy, envisioned a relaxed setting that offered more than drive-through service or a convenience store counter. “I wanted it to be cozy, different from what we already had in the area. I wanted it to be somewhere I would want to hang out,” Kim said. After purchasing the 1,200-square-foot building and eventually obtaining a variance from the town’s zoning board of adjustment to open a commercial venture, the owners hired Moultonborough-based Lacewood Construction to oversee the building renovation. But first, Kim and Mike needed to obtain bank financing to supplement their own investment into the new business. Kim said they applied for a construction and equipment loan from Meredith Village Savings Bank (MVSB) with assistance from MVSB banker Charlie Gorhan, who “did the legwork.” (It was Gorhan who informed them about another financing resource, the Wolfeboro-based Wentworth Economic Development Corporation (WEDCO), a private nonprofit 501 (c)(3) regional economic development corporation serving businesses of all sizes in Brookfield, Effingham, Farmington, Middleton, Milton, Moultonborough, New Durham, Sandwich, Tuftonboro, Wakefield, and Wolfeboro.) Through WEDCO, the owners secured a $65,000 loan that was applied towards the MVSB construction loan. With its motto of, “Our business is helping business,” WEDCO offers two business-financing programs, the Revolving Loan Fund and Intermediary Lending Program, with the common goal of retaining or creating jobs in the region. WEDCO Executive Director Denise Roy-Palmer lauded the Cup and Crumb endeavor as one with multiple benefits. “This is a perfect example of members of the community having a vision for a vacant underutilized land/building located on a main thoroughfare, and transforming it into an aesthetically pleasing property that serves as a home for a great new business, becomes a destination for residents and visitors alike, and creates employment opportunities,” she said. “WEDCO is proud to be part of it,” she added. Even prior to loan approval, the couple started preparing for their financial future. Kim said they got used to living off Mike’s salary from his own company, Calico Graphics in Wolfeboro, and prepared for the financial obligations of a new business venture. Mike’s experience as a self-employed business owner provided the confidence and expertise to pursue Cup & Crumb. These days Kim gets a sense of satisfaction by seeing her business plan come to fruition – and by recognizing that the Cup & Crumb is already attracting regular customers. On a recent Friday afternoon, the café was busy with both sit-down and take out customers. The interior design is rustic chic and relaxed, with a built-in gas fireplace, several seating areas and an L-shaped counter constructed in painted blue/gray barn-board. Full-time pastry chef Jennifer Clifford is the maestro in the bakery, creating the menu assortment from scratch daily for the café as well as for custom orders through her baking business, For Goodness Cakes, she runs from the café and her home kitchen. Kim actually taught Clifford at Moultonborough Academy, and got to know about her talent when the student job-shadowed local well-known pastry chef Donna Love. Clifford, who has been baking since she was eight-years-old, starting working for Love part time during the last two years of high school and upon graduation worked at Donna’s bakery, Love Bites, and Love’s Quay in Wolfeboro. Coming to work with and for Kim at Cup & Crumb and For Goodness Cakes is both creative and professionally satisfying. “Kim is awesome to work with and we get very creative here,” said Clifford. “It’s not a cookie cutter, same thing every day, business.” The Wentworth Economic Development Corp., Inc. Moose Mountain Jazz Band at Wolfeboro Bandstand The Moose Mountain Jazz Band has traditionally been one of the most popular offerings on the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series. After not appearing last year, the band is back this year to entertain audiences on Saturday, Aug. 29. The Moose Mountain Jazz Band has been performing at events all over the region since 2001, when the group originally got together to play a Dixieland Night at the Wakefield Historical Society. The band officially formed in February 2002 and has been bringing the sounds of Dixieland jazz to locals and visitors alike for more than 10 years. The band is led by Lance MacLean, who has been playing music of some kind most of his life. He began with a ukulele at age 8 and at age 14 picked up a banjo and has been playing it ever since. Wayne Mogel has played for numerous bands, including the Glenn Miller Band, the Air Force Band and many Motown bands, including The

The contents from this Estate are from the house of former President Grover Cleveland’s youngest son, Francis Grover Cleveland and his wife, Alice Erdman Cleveland, and their daughter, Marion Cleveland Cohen. The house stands atop Cleveland Hill Road in Tamworth and was built in the early part of the 20th century by First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland as a summer cottage. Francis and Alice Cleveland used it as their summer home beginning in the 1920s. Its contents are an eclectic mix from generations of the Cleveland and Erdman families.

The proceeds from this lot will go to benefit The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, which Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland founded in 1931. The Barnstormers is one of just two professional theaters in New Hampshire and is among the oldest summer theaters in the country. It has been the launching pad for dozens of professional theatrical careers as well as home to many well-known veteran actors. Today (August 29) is the close of the 85th season. The Beauty of Cut Flowers Spider Web Gardens Cut Flower Gardens are now open for the late summer/early autumn season. The cutyour-own flower garden is planted with over 50 varieties of flowers and there are over 10,000 plants. Customers can check in at the shop to borrow snips and choose what they want for 25 cents a stem; it is suggested that customers bring their own bucket or pail. The experience of choosing each perfect flower, trying new color and texture combinations, and being out-of-doors on a beautiful day is unique. Flowers are not only beautiful and provide joy for our eyes, but they can also be medicinal and culinary and used cosmetically. One of the cut flowers in the garden with an interesting history is the lovely calendula officinalis, which has been used in cooking for centuries. The flower was a common ingredient in German soups and stews, which explain the nickname “pot marigold.” The lovely golden petals were also used to add color to butter and cheese. The flowers are traditional ingredients in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. Calendula tea provides health benefits as well as being delicious. The beautiful flowers were once used as a source of dye for fabrics. Calendula is native to the Mediterranean region and has spread throughout the world

because the plant tolerates many growing conditions. During the Civil War, American doctors relied on its antiseptic properties and packed open wounds with calendula leaves. Calendula was historically significant in medicine in many cultures, and it is still important in alternative medicine today. Cosmos is another cut flower with an interesting history. Spanish priests grew cosmos asteraceae in their mission gardens in Mexico. The evenly placed petals led them to christen the flower Cosmos, the Greek word for harmony or ordered universe. Cosmos originated in Mexico and South America. Freshly cut cosmos blooms make a bright, airy bouquet and an arrangement can last for seven to 10 days. Select flowers whose petals have just unfolded; they will open fully once cut. Cut the flowers in the morning when their water content is highest and immediately place them in a deep container of tepid water. Before arranging, strip foliage from the lower portion of the stems. If leaves are submerged under water, they will decay quickly, shortening the life of the bouquet. Cosmos flowers are also suitable for drying. Spider Web Gardens is open every day from 8 am to 5 pm, located at 252 Middle Road in Tuftonboro. Visit www.spiderwerbgardens.com for more information.

Wellness Wednesday Runs Through September Every Wednesday through September 30, the public is encouraged to stay active, eat healthy and love the life they’re living (which isn’t too hard when you’re surrounded by amazing views from the Castle estate). From healthy meals in The Carriage House Restaurant to activities on campus, locals as well as visitors from all around the world are invited to get fit at the Castle. Greet the day by enjoying yoga on the Lawns of Lucknow. Experienced yoga instructor, Kelly Libby of Sacred Space Studio, will lead enthusiasts of all levels in morning yoga. Relish the tranquility that comes from doing yoga in a beautiful outdoor mountain setting. Remember to bring your mat with

you. Space is limited to 25 participants per session, so call 476-5414 to reserve a space. (Reservations are highly recommended. Use Ossipee Road as the Main Gate will be closed.) A trolley to the Castle will meet yoga participants at the Carriage House at 8:15 am. Yoga classes are $15 per person per class. For those who want to stay active, what better way than taking a hike on the Castle property? The Lakes Region Conservation Trust owns and maintains more than 25 miles of free hiking trails that traverse the mountaintop estate. Take a family-friendly stroll along several cascading waterfalls or opt for a more invigorating hike up Mount Roberts, Bald Knob or Mount Shaw. Try a new hike each week to stay fit

and active this summer and fall. Make sure to practice safe hiking skills: bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, know your route, let friends and family know where you’re going and how long you plan on being out. For your safety as well as the safety of our visitors, please never hike on paved roads (especially the Scenic Drive) – stick to the trails. Learn more about the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, including a link to buy a trail map, at lrct.org. And remember, if you’re coming to hike you should park outside the gate atop Ossipee Park Road in the hiker parking lot so you don’t get locked in if you’re on the property past the 6 pm closing time. Grappone Automotive Group and

Huggins Hospital generously sponsor wellness Wednesdays. Castle in the Clouds is located off Route 171 in Moultonborough. Take Route 25 into Moultonborough, then south on Route 109 to Route 171 – for Yoga, enter via Ossipee Park Road off Route 171 and follow signs to the Carriage House. Castle in the Clouds is a not for profit organization owned and managed by the Castle Preservation Society and dedicated to the interpretation and preservation of the historic Thomas G. Plant Estate. Beer on Tap…and In Your Soap? By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The idea of making soap isn’t a new one. People (mostly housewives in olden days) have made soap for centuries. Mix a few ingredients and maybe add some flowers for a nice scent and viola! You have a batch of homemade soap. These days Lisa Beveridge has elevated the art of soap making to a new level and the product has been gaining in popularity. Customers travel from near and far to buy the beer soap that is a staple of Beveridge Craft Beer and Soap Company on North Main Street in Wolfeboro. While customers are in the shop Wolfeboro to get soap, they can linger and sample some craft beers in the tasting room and if it’s lunchtime, Lisa might be serving her favorite Fluffernutter sandwiches or other tasty lunchtime foods. But making soap with beer seems such an oddity; one has to wonder just how Lisa (who owns the shop with her husband Brad) came up with the idea of beer soap, which goes hand-in-hand with the craft beer shop. Laughing, Lisa says, “I have sensitive skin, so about 13 years ago, when I lived in Massachusetts, I decided to make my own soap. I’ve always been crafty – I always hand made gifts for my family, so I thought I would give soap making a try.” She adds that there is a steep learning curve when it comes to successfully making soap and it isn’t a quick and easy process. Probably because she is a creative person, Lisa mastered soap making so successfully that she began to give soap for gifts. It was a quick jump from making soap for herself and family to selling soap at craft shows, farmer’s markets and expos. About seven years ago, Lisa came up with “a cool idea. I heard that beer makes hair shiny. I thought, ‘Why not try to add beer to soap I was making?’ I was into craft beers, so I added some beer to a batch of soap.” The beer soap was a success, and lest one assume Lisa’s soap will make you smell like beer if you use it, that could not be further from the truth! She adds all natural essential oils and fragrances and the beer is an ingredient that softens the skin. “The hops and grains in beer soften the skin,” she adds. “And there is protein and vitamin B in beer.” According to information at www. beveridgecraftbeerandsoap.com, “When beer is added to the soapmaking process, rather than water, it adds many benefits. Hops is an ingredient found in beer and is known for its relaxing properties. Other great benefits to hops are: it soothes irritated skin, and contains polyphenols thought to account for its anti-bacterial and preservative effects (beer’s long life) and it also contains skin softening amino acids. Depending upon the beer that we use, the amounts and types of hops, grains, malts, fruits and/or nuts used when brewing the beer, each will have its own signature light scent and different degrees of creaminess in the bar of soap, with a subtle yet sweet

A selection of Craft Beer Soaps made by Lisa Beveridge. undernote due to all of those beneficial beer ingredients. Do not worry, you will not smell like you just bathed in a bottle of beer—you will just feel the added benefits and your skin will thank you! Each batch of artisan soap is made by hand the old-fashioned way in small batches. I use all natural and some local ingredients to ensure the finest quality. Each bar is hand-cut and then cured for at least four weeks. No animal testing is conducted, except of course on my very willing family members and friends!” Lisa asked permission from some craft breweries to use their beers in her soap and most liked the idea very much. They were also curious and wanted to try the beer soaps. New England breweries Lisa works with include the Woodstock Inn and Brewery, Sam Adams and Smuttynose. Lisa moved to New Hampshire’s Lakes Region in 2003 and continued to make and sell soaps. Her husband, along the way, made her the molds she uses for her soap making. Residing in the Wolfeboro area, Lisa noticed a shop space was available on the Main Street and wanted to open a place to sell her soap. “I was a firsttime business owner and I knew I needed to do more than offer soap. Thus, I decided to sell beer as well,” she says. “Selling beer” is an understatement indeed. Lisa and Brad offer a wide variety of craft beers. According to www.beveridgebeerandsoap. com, “We offer a great selection of local brews and brews from around the country and the world. All who enter the shop are taken away with the amazing selection of beer. Don’t expect to make it a quick visit; there are too many things to check out to make that perfect selection. We focus mainly on local beer, wine and mead. We offer over 18 local New Hampshire brews, mead from the Sap House Meadery and Wine from Sweet Baby Vineyards and Hermit Woods Winery.” The shop encompasses a few rooms – one for a wide variety of beers and other beverages for sale, as well as the soaps. A cozy and funky Tap Room has a bar and seating and it is here that beer lovers can get their favorite craft beers, or just sample something new. Lunch is offered in the Tap Room as well, so get ready for that New England childhood sandwich, a Fluffernutter or other food of choice!

Smiling, Lisa says of the Tap Room, “People seem to like to hang out with us! We have seven brews on tap (most from New Hampshire breweries). “We have grown a lot. People see the sign or they find us on social media and they are curious,” Lisa explains. “We had a beer festival last summer and an ice festival right out on the ice on Lake Winnipesaukee last winter. Both were very well attended.” Community spirited Lisa and Brad donate to Camp Sunshine in Maine and the Granite State Adaptive Sports, supported by the beer festivals. Why the big attendance at these events? Lisa says it is because people like to meet the breweries that produce their favorite beers and if they like good beer, they can socialize with others who share their passion. While chatting, Lisa mentions she is busy with a Beer Festival that is coming up in mid August. Other tastings take place at the shop, and are popular. If Lisa and Brad’s son Austin happens to be home from college, his band might play during

the tastings, which add to the festive atmosphere. Lisa explains that Austin works in the shop with them, and is an integral part of the business. “We couldn’t do it without him. This is indeed a family business.” Lisa makes a lot of the beer soaps in the off-season, usually a few times a week. She has loyal customers who come from all over to stock up on a variety of beer soap. Some come once a year and order a lot of soap, and some just stop in when their soap supply is running low. “I use a different beer and a different scent for each batch, so it keeps things new and interesting,” Lisa says. “I have about 30 different beers I use for the soaps and I usually offer about 12 to 15 soaps in the shop at any time.” When it’s soap making time, Lisa gleans about 140 bars of soap from one batch, but it is an intensive process: it takes about a month for a batch of soap to cure. “I also make hops infused lotions, lip butter and beard oil,” she adds. When asked what her future plans might be, Lisa’s eyes light up. “I have a lot of plans!” The public will have to wait and see what might be coming next for Beveridge Craft Beer and Soap Co. It is possible there will be further expansion, because craft beer is very, very popular with a wide range of people. And even weddings are seeing more use of craft beers. Lisa says she has couples in the wedding planning process stopping by to place orders for craft beer for their wedding receptions. The shop/tap room is open six days a week; to learn more, visit www. beveridgecraftbeerandsoap.com. The shop is located at 51 North Main Street

Long Live the League! By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Creativity thrives in the rural communities of the Lakes Region. For decades, local people have been making pottery, braided and hooked rugs, baskets, forged items, prints and a lot more. Some of the handmade work reaches a high level of quality and the items are sold in the most prestigious New Hampshire outlet, the League of NH Craftsmen. The League of NH Arts and Crafts was founded in 1932 and the first official League shop started in Wolfeboro. Today the League of NH Craftsmen is a thriving statewide crafts organization with many juried craftspeople. League shops have sprung up around the state since the 1920s; some shops have grown, some have closed and other shops have opened. Among the first efforts to sell handmade items in the method that would become the League of Craftsmen was an event organized by Mrs. J. Randolph Coolidge (a Sandwich summer resident). She fell in love with and saw the value of hooked

and braided rugs made by Sandwich women. Mrs. Coolidge organized an exhibition of locally made rugs and brought an expert from Boston to give a talk on the practical aspects of making and marketing rugs. According to League Beginnings in Sandwich by William C. Greene, the rug expert commented on the locally crafted rugs, pointing out the quality of some of the rugs and the pleasing colors and designs. The talk got local craftspeople excited and it led to the formation of a cooperative venture. What if, these artisans wondered, they pooled their handmade goods and opened a shop in their rural community? The crafts shop was opened one summer in the 1920s for the purpose of selling locally made handicrafts and it was a support to the local economy. As well as opening a summer shop in a storefront in town, a tea room was also added to lure travelers and summer vacationers. The proceeds from the tea room helped pay the rent on the shop. As a precursor to today’s League shops, the first season inventory included rugs,

embroidery, knitted goods, woodwork, baskets, candles, children’s dresses, and very popular cornhusk doormats. Soon, ironwork, pottery and jewelry were added to the list of locally made crafts. Education has always been important at the League; in the early years of the Sandwich Home Industries, there was instruction in many crafts, among them hand weaving and woodworking. Printed materials from the early days of the Sandwich shop show many local crafts, including baskets, woodworking and furniture, woven textiles and the hooked and braided rugs that were the original impetus for the shop. (Originally, many League shops had a specialty craft: weaving in Sandwich, metalwork in Wolfeboro, etc. Eventually the shops diversified, and began selling and teaching about a greater variety of products, including quilting, furniture making, pottery, and carving.) After a successful first season with sales of over $1000.00, the newly formed Sandwich Home Industries (the name of the group before it became the League of NH Craftsmen) had the lucky situation of being offered a building on the Main Street of Sandwich. The shop and a tea room were operated at the spot until the building burned to the ground during the Great Fire of 1934. (Saturday night baked bean suppers also were offered from time to time.) At the same time Mrs. Coolidge and her group were working at the new Sandwich village shop, A. Cooper

Ballentine was organizing craft classes in Wolfeboro. According to www. nhcrafts.org., with similar goals to promote the work of NH craftspeople, Coolidge and Ballentine joined forces and started a crafts movement that soon caught on around the state. In 1931, the pair got approval for the creation of the NH Commission of Arts and Crafts, the first such effort in the country. The League of NH Arts and Crafts was founded in 1932 and the first shop to open under that name was in Wolfeboro. The first Craftsman’s Fair was held in 1933; the movement started by Coolidge and Ballentine really took off at this point. In 1935 a new building was constructed on the Green in Sandwich. The charming little shop looked like a modest whitewashed cottage or Cape style home, but it had been designed expressly for the Industries. (This quaint cottage style architecture would be repeated at other League shops over the years.) The building houses the Sandwich Home Industries, one of the first League shops. In the early days, not every community was fortunate enough to have a League shop. By 1935 there were many people interested in the arts and crafts movement in New Hampshire. Their focus was to educate the public through crafts classes, so local townspeople could enjoy working with their hands and also make extra income. Small shops sprang up wherever there was a space:

in the front room of private homes, in a barn during the summer months and anywhere there was a visible spot to offer handmade items for sale. If there was no possibility of a community having a shop, the craftspeople of that town sold their goods at the nearest League shop. In 1932 and 1933, larger shops opened in Concord, Conway, Meredith and Wolfeboro. At the time the shops were called Home Industries. After World War II, the League realized that the home-based shops could benefit from more space. Wolfeboro moved into a small shop on the town wharf in 1948 and Bristol in the Newfound Lake area opened a League shop in 1950. In 1946 the Conway area shop opened after years of being transferred from one craftsman’s home to another. An artisan who exhibited in the Newfound Lake area’s Bristol shop recalled, ““I took many arts and crafts classes at the shop. Before I was involved in the League, the shop was located near the downtown Bristol area in the 1950s. Then the shop was moved nearer to Newfound Lake. The highway was a busy one during the 1960s. The shop was open year round and was very busy, even in the fall. “I took Early American Decoration classes and learned the craft. I remember the shop sold pottery, lots of weaving, painted items, woodwork, leather crafts and braided rugs. At that time, League members sold their crafts in the shop nearest their town. Once I passed the League’s jury, which was pretty strict, I exhibited and sold painted items in the Bristol shop because I lived in that town.”

As the crafts movement spread across the state, the League felt people could benefit from a craft center in northern New Hampshire. To meet that need, the Franconia Craft Center opened its doors in 1946. The center was located in a refurbished railroad station. Other League shop workers and members were very excited about the Franconia Center and they pitched in to help. For example, the Concord Home Industries shop raised funds for the interior painting of the Center and the Wolfeboro League shop had a foodless food sale, which raised money for the Franconia Center’s doors. In 1967 the Wolfeboro shop was relocated. The new League shop had room for classes and a wonderful pottery laboratory. Also in the Lakes Region, the Meredith League shop was in need of more space. In 1973 the shop (the only shop of the early 1930s still in its original building) got a full-time director. The interior of the shop was redecorated and insulated so the sales season could be lengthened. (The shop also extended the hours of operation in 1973 and stayed open until the Christmas season.) Wolfeboro followed suit by staying open into the fall. The Meredith shop is today located next to Church Landing on Daniel Webster Highway and is open year round. It retains the charming cottage style, which was the symbol of the League. Today there are many thriving League shops around the state. The public continues to recognize the fine handmade items created by those who live in rural New Hampshire communities.
