Make Your Holiday Happier: Cut Your Own Tree By Barbara Neville-Wilson Have you noticed that pivotal point in Christmas TV specials when the main characters fetch their Christmas tree? Suddenly true feelings reveal themselves, rifts are healed, and a Scrooge-like exterior melts away. Sappy (pun intended) though it may be, it seems Hallmark writers are onto something. According to a study published by psychologists Leaf Van Boven of University of Colorado, Boulder and Thomas Bilovich of Cornell in 2003, “…individuals will live happier lives if they invest in experiences more than material possessions.” So in this season of hustle and bustle, parties and happenings, “to-do” lists and gift lists, functions and family, where can you go to experience the joy of picking and cutting and hauling your tree? Lakes Region Christmas tree farms offer a wide variety of experiences. Many are mom-and-pop family operations, open on weekends and sometimes selling on a cash-only basis. It’s wise to call or email ahead for details. Barnstead Neva Dun Farm has been a family destination for 30 years. Known for organic trees, they also offer wreaths up 60-in. diameter and cross-country skiing, conditions permitting. Call 603-776-7000. Bristol The Bristol Rotary Club Christmas
Tree Sale is held at Bond Auto across from the Bristol Fire Station in the downtown area. Trees are fresh, NH grown and proceeds benefit local Rotary projects. Call 603-744-2713. Gilford The Gilford Rotary Christmas Tree Sale takes place through December 11 daily at the Gilford Cinema 8 Plaza on Rt. 11 in Gilford. A variety of trees will be available and shoppers can warm up with hot cocoa, chowder and hot dogs. Details are available at Gilford Rotary’s Facebook page. Liberty Hill Farm, located on Emerson Road, is run by Greg LeMay. Contact: greglemay@metrocast.net or call 603-455-5150. Muehlke Family Tree Farm is located

on the Gunstock Mountain hillside on Belknap Mt. Road, on land once home to the world’s longest rope tow. Boasting a new blade for every tree, the Muehlke’s offer a free tree removal bag or gift, and a chance to unwind with hot mulled cider. Email info@ MuehlkeFamilyFarm.com or call 603524-9507. Moultonborough Joal Tree Farm is a perennial favorite among locals on Lake Winnipesaukeee. Located off Green’s Basin Road, it offers no digital presence, so be sure to call ahead for hours at 603-253-9937. Plymouth Glove Hollow Farm has been run by the Ahern family since 1897. You’re sure to find a tree you like when you
have more than 75,000 to choose from. Open every day between Thanksgiving Friday and Christmas Eve, they also offer horse drawn hayrides the weekend of December 10 and 11, and tractor hay rides at all other times. Everyone in the family is sure to be intrigued by “secret” viewing tunnels and the new viewing tower. Relax next to the bonfire with seasonal refreshments. For information, email mikeahern172@ gmail.com or call 603-520-9096. LeBlanc’s Christmas Tree Farm is open daily, Thanksgiving Friday until Christmas. Their Facebook page says, “Our family has been growing Christmas trees for 38 years. Our farm is located on the hillside overlooking the mountains near Plymouth, NH.” Dleblancski@gmail.com; 603-5361496 or 603-254-8111. Tuftonboro Bald Peak Christmas Tree Farm has been a tradition in Tuftonboro for decades and offers “trees of all shapes and sizes,” they say. Opens in December. 603-544-7364. Wolfeboro The Rotary Club of Wolfeboro sponsors a fundraiser by selling Christmas trees. Stop by the Clark House Museum Complex at 233 S. Main Street in Wolfeboro to view a wide selection of trees including Balsam Firs, Frasers and Canaan Firs ranging in sizes from 6 to 10-ft. The Rotary Club’s men and women sell

5th Annual Gilford Candlelight Stroll On December 10, Gilford Village will, for the 5th year, be lit with over 1000 candles. Come experience a horse drawn wagon ride from the Gilford Public Library to the Rowe House, or make S’mores with Gilford Fire Department. Thompson-Ames Historical Society will have all three of the historic buildings open with demonstrations, entertainment, and holidays treats. The Gilford Library will feature Bonnie and the Line Dancers, crafts for kids, an open house, and much more. Visit with the owners of the Gilford
Village Store, or folks along the village roads. This event is free to all, with donation baskets located at the three Thompson Ames Buildings. There is a lot to see and do as you stroll along the village. Santa will be at the Bandstand; Kathy Denutte, candle maker, will be on hand; and student carolers will be roaming the village. See Officer Adam VanSteenberg with his K9 Ike, Walt Stockwell, Gilford’s Flagman, and roast chestnuts with the Hildreth Family. This is always a fun-filled evening you won’t want to miss!

trees Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Members are there to help you find the perfect tree and help load it onto your vehicle. Visit www. wolfebororotary.org. A bit “up north” in New Hampshire, you can find the most rustic and economical experience in the White Mountain National Forest. Because the forests belong to the citizens, the Forest Service considers us all part owners of the individual trees. For the small price of a $5 permit bought at the Saco Ranger Station, a family can cut their own tree from any of the Forest’s nearly 800,000 acres of public lands. Some guidelines apply, including that trees are for personal use only, cannot be taken from areas in regular public use and should not be larger than eightin. in diameter at chest height; stumps left behind must be less than 10-in. high; and only hand tools can be used
for cutting the trees. Slogging through rough forest not for you? The Rocks Estate in Bethlehem has partnered with more than 20 local inns to offer a Norman Rockwellesque experience without the muss. Accommodations range from standard hotel rooms to suites with kid-friendly lofts. Visitors can select a fresh cut Christmas tree and also a decorated wreath. The Rocks has thousands of trees from which to choose; cut your own or the staff of the Rocks will do it for you. The tree will then be baled and tied onto your car by their experienced staff. The Rocks marketplace and gift shop is available for scrumptious locally made food and handcrafted items. And on weekends, guests can enjoy a complimentary horse drawn wagon ride. Whether your perfect Christmas tree is a Fraser fir, balsam, Scotch Pine, or blue spruce consider cutting your own this year. Science says the experience will make yours a happier holiday!
Christmas Bells in the Village A ‘Christmas Bells in the Village’ concert will be held at the First Congregational Church of Wakefield, UCC on December 10 at 5:30 pm. Please plan to attend the beautiful and uplifting hand bell concert to usher in the Advent season. The Hand Bell Choir is celebrating its 28th anniversary this year and has been preparing for many months for the joyous event to ring in the Season of Light and Christ’s Peace. The doors will open early to the Fellowship Hall for a warming welcome and to showcase the missions
of the church and the many options for Alternative Giving. The Wakefield Inn and Restaurant will be offering a special pre-concert dinner at 4 pm. You may call them directly for reservations at 603-522-8272. The First Congregational Church of Wakefield, UCC, is an open and affirming church located at 2718 Wakefield Rd., Wakefield, NH and may be reached at 603-5223189. The suggested donation is $10. Proceeds to benefit the Wakefield Food Pantry and Ministries of the Church. The snow date is December 17.

The Nutcracker Brings Ballet to Wolfeboro Northeastern Ballet Theatre (NBT), New Hampshire’s premier ballet company, will present the holiday classic, The Nutcracker, on Saturday, December 10 at 7 pm at the Kingswood Arts Center in Wolfeboro. Under the directorship of former Boston Ballet prima ballerina, Edra Toth, NBT’s The Nutcracker takes the audience on a magical journey with Clara and her Nutcracker as they venture through the Land of the Sweets. The roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier will be reprised from 2016 by Lissa Curtis of Dover as the Sugar Plum Fairy, and a guest performer as her Cavalier, Barrington Hinds, who now resides in New York City. Ms. Curtis has starred in many Northeastern Ballet Theatre ballets such as Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and most recently, Dracula. Barrington Hinds is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida. He began his training at the School of Ballet Florida under the direction of Marie Hale, and also attended Alexander Dreyfoos School Of The Arts. Barrington holds a BFA in dance from SUNY Purchase College and has also trained at the Taipei National University of the Arts during a semester abroad in Taiwan. He has worked professionally with VERB Ballets, the North West Professional Dance Project, and performed in the ensemble of the national tour of Twyla Tharp’s Broadway show, Movin’ Out, where he understudied the lead role of Tony. Cramer of Bethesda, MD also said, “My niece and daughter left with stars in their eyes and a memorable lesson of the accessibility of ballet.” Mrs. Cramer, who has been a Boston Ballet aficionado for many decades, also stated, “Now the Northeastern Ballet Theatre Nutcracker is our new and eagerly awaited tradition. I am thrilled to share the magic of such a superb ballet performance with the fourth generation of our family.” For tickets and more information, visit www.northeasternballet.org or call 603834-8834. Calling All Tuba, Euphonium and Baritone Horn Players The 13th annual TUBACHRISTMAS concert in Wolfeboro will be Saturday, December 10, from 2 to 3 pm at All Saint’s Episcopal Church, 258 South Main Street. The popular holiday event is sponsored by the Harvey Phillips Foundation, and the concert is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in performing in the concert should contact the local TUBACHRISTMAS coordinator, Joe Ewing at 603-569-3861 or visit www. tubachristmas.com. Registration for performers will be in the choir room of All Saint’s Church between 9:30 and 10 am on Saturday, December 10, and the rehearsal will be from 10 am
until noon. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided during registration, and there will be a break for lunch before the concert. The Wolfeboro TUBACHRISTMAS concert is a regional event that welcomes all tuba, sousaphone, helicon, baritone horn and euphonium players from community, university, and high school bands as well as professional musicians, both working and retired. Nancy Donahue, an accomplished low brass performer, will conduct and encourages all that play an upright low brass valve instrument, be it their primary instrument or one played only on occasion, to consider this opportunity.
Experience All-Day Comfort ProXP
According to Ms. Donahue, ”The arrangements are fresh and appealing, as they focus upon the melodic capabilities of the instruments and the rich mellow sound when played together in close harmony. For the audience, it’s very much like listening to familiar music being performed in an interesting new way. These arrangements are of musical interest to the most skilled performers, but not too difficult for those that consider themselves a student of the instrument. As well, there is only one group rehearsal, so other than personal practice, it’s definitely not time consuming.” TUBACHRISTMAS was founded in 1974 by Harvey Phillps, renowned tuba virtuoso and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, School of Music. He conceived it as a way to honor the great tubist and teacher, William Bell, who was born on Christmas Day in 1902. The famous American composer, Alec Wilder, liked the idea and agreed to arrange carols for low
brass ensemble, and the very first concert was held on the Ice Rink Stage of New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza in December of 1974, with over 300 participants. Since then, the popularity of TUBACHRISTMAS has grown considerably among performers and audiences alike, and in 2016, there are over 200 scheduled concerts in cities and towns across America, plus several foreign countries. The public is cordially invited to attend the Wolfeboro TUBACHRISTMAS concert, which will begin at 2 pm in the sanctuary of All Saints’ Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 10. Monetary donations will be accepted and will go directly to the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry to help provide needed food and other necessities for area residents. If you have never heard a TUBACHRISTMAS performance before, you are in for a musical treat, so mark your calendar, bring your family and invite your friends.

ing, embroidery, sewing or other fiber arts-related project to work on as well as a small donation to leave in the community center’s donation box at the end of the evening. If you have a question about your project, there is sure to be someone in attendance who can provide assistance. Stop by either or both days, even if all you care to do is listen for a while. All ages and stages are welcome. For more information please call 603-284-7120. Senior Meals are held each Wednesday at noon at the Benz Center on Heard Road in Center Sandwich. It is always a well-balanced and delicious meal. Ages 60 and older are targeted and a small donation is requested The Sandwich Singers are rehearsing Saturdays from 9:15 to 11:30 am at the Methodist Meeting House in
Center Sandwich. Concerts will be in December. If you are new to the group, please call Peggy Johnson at 603-3238877 for details, and so there will be enough music at rehearsals. They are looking forward to another season of celebrating together in song! Season 4 of Roger Sorlein’s Wednesday night music series at the Corner House Pub in Center Sandwich
is underway. As in past years, Roger will be joined each week by the best folk musicians in the region. Roger and friends will do their best to escort you safely through the fall of the year, the bleak mid-winter, and past the Ides of March. Enjoy music and friends Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 pm in the pub.

with rich green, red, pink, burgundy and white colors that enrich everyone’s holiday décor. For best results when your poinsettias arrive home, keep away from drafts, near a sunny window, (six hours of sunlight is the best). Ideal temperatures would be 70° in the day and below 65° at night. Poinsettias do best with a moist soil; not too wet and not too dry. Water thoroughly when the surface of
the soil feels dry. Water until it begins to seep through the drain holes at the bottom of the pot. Discard any standing water at the base. Dana Cunningham and guest to present holiday concert Celebrate the coming of Christmas and winter with some of the season’s most evocative music, when pianist Dana Cunningham and cellist Max Dyer, along with singer Leah Morrow, perform in concert at Eaton Village’s distinctive landmark Little White Church at 4 pm on Sunday, December 11. The excitement of the holiday season often can make it difficult to quiet our
spirits, so we may enjoy the natural stillness and beauty of December. For many fans, Dana’s deeply expressive annual December Sunday afternoon concerts are a can’t-be-missed tradition. Her beautiful original arrangements of classic seasonal compositions, such as “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Carol of the Bells,” take us to a special place where we remember the real reasons that our hearts celebrate this time of

year. The Little White Church is the perfect venue for this special concert, elegant in its simplicity. The acoustics are such that the crystalline musical notes seem to resonate long in the air, inviting the audience to explore the meditative silence between those notes. Dana’s performances with Max in the 1800s church are everything a concert of the advent season should be…warmly intimate, calm yet joyful, and an invitation to open the door to Christmas love and peace. Cunningham is a well known locally based pianist, composer, recording artist, and public speaker. She loves performing most of all and intersperses the music pieces with the spoken word, including poems by the ancients like Rumi or contemporary voices, such as Mary Oliver. She says of her performances, “My intention is to cultivate a greater sense of the present moment, inviting the listener to open more fully to his or her own experience.” Dana released her new recording, “Above the Field,” this past year. It will be available for purchase at this performance, along with her other CDs. “Above the Field” features her signature piano style on a collection of 14 hymns, including such familiar classics as “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” and “Abide With Me.” Dana’s aspiration for this project is to provide the listener with a new accessibility and inspiration to the time-honored pieces. Her accompanying musicians on this recording were Max Dyer and saxophonist Mike Sakash. Dana has recently announced that arrangements for her compositions on the CD “Silent Night” will be available in sheet music for download through her website. Max Dyer is a cellist with nearly 35 years of professional experience in the United States and abroad. An
Bradley’s
unusually versatile cellist, he is fluent in many musical styles and has many different ways of playing in public – from traditional concerts and recitals to multicultural, jazz and world music performances at festivals, clubs and churches. An experienced recording artist, he often collaborates with producers and musicians from his own Cellomax Studio. He performs with the Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Symphony, and in many freelance situations. He has contributed to hundreds of recordings in many genres, both as a musician and as a producer. The delightful singer, Leah Morrow, will be featured on several pieces at this performance and will lead the audience in singing Silent Night. Leah grew up in a musical family and trained with Ralph Farris, before completing her musical education at Westminster Choir College. Currently a resident of Freedom, she has performed locally on a number of occasions, including several concerts at the South Eaton Meeting House featuring the compositions of Levis Hampton, and as the choir director at St. Joseph’s Church in Ossipee. An after-concert reception in the church undercroft will provide an opportunity to chat with the musicians, purchase CDs, and enjoy amazing refreshments made by Barbara Holmes. Seating is quite limited at the Little White Church, and the performance usually sells out, so advance purchase of tickets is strongly recommended. Tickets are sold at White Birch Books in North Conway (603-3563200) and at the Eaton Village Store. Tickets also can be purchased at www. danacunningham.com. For more information about the performers, go to Dana’s website above or Max’s website at www.maxdyer. com.

Conway’s Bolduc Block and George Washington House named to National Register of Historic Places The New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources announces that the United States Secretary of the Interior has honored the Bolduc Block in Conway with placement on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is significant both for its architecture and as an example of an early 20th century mixed-use commercial space. A long-standing local landmark that replaced several buildings destroyed by fire in 1923, the Bolduc Block was designed to have four shops and a theater on the first floor and offices on the second. It was home to the first purpose-built movie theater in Conway. Bolduc Block’s Art Deco and Art Moderne features include a flat brick exterior, a stepped parapet and projecting storefronts. The theater entrance is easily identified by a prominent marquee, echoing the original, that extends over the sidewalk and gold-painted wooden frames designed to hold movie advertisements. The New Conway Theatre – which was later renamed the Majestic Theater – opened on June 24, 1931, showing a cartoon, a short comedy, a Technicolor geography lesson and the MGM comedy “Stepping Out,” starring Charlotte Greenwood and Reginald Denney. Throughout its history, Bolduc Block’s storefronts were occupied by a variety of businesses, including a pharmacy, grocer, department store, sewing store, telephone business offices and

An articulated bay window, octagonal turret and wraparound porch are major features on the front of the house. As with many Queen Anne style homes, the exterior is covered with both clapboards and decorative shingles in different patterns on each floor. The home’s floor plan divides formal and daily living, with large ornate rooms in the main part of the house and smaller, simpler rooms in the ell. Much of the original interior detailed woodwork is still varnished or shellacked, and many original details, including electrical features from the 1920s and stained glass windows, are still in place. The Noyes House’s high-style urban barn is typical of the late 19th century, located behind the house with its gable end facing the driveway. Designed with carriage space in the front and stalls in the back, its exterior follows similar patterns as the main house, using both clapboards and decorative shingles. Its large sliding door and smaller sliding hayloft door still use their original hardware. • Historic Places Continued from page 25 Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation and is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect our historic and archaeological resources. Listing to the National Register does not impose any new or additional restrictions or limitations on the use of private or non-federal properties. Listings identify historically significant properties and can serve as education tools and increase heritage tourism opportunities. The rehabilitation
of National Register-listed commercial or industrial buildings may qualify for certain federal tax provisions. In New Hampshire, listing to the National Register makes applicable property owners eligible for grants such as the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program or LCHIP (lchip. org) and the Conservation License Plate Program (nh.gov/nhdhr/grants/ moose). For more information on the National Register program in New Hampshire, please visit nh.gov/nhdhr or contact Peter Michaud at the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources at 603-271-3483.

Community Christmas Service at Historic Center Tuftonboro Church The First Christian Church of Center Tuftonboro will celebrate the season with a traditional Community Christmas Service on Sunday, December 11 at 5 pm. The public is invited to join Tuftonboro neighbors and experience the joy of the season in the warm glow of oil lamps just as Americans did in the 19th century. The service will include the singing of carols, the reading of verse, a meditation by Rev. Kent Schneider and special music will be performed by an ensemble ofl local musicians. The call to worship will be announced by the tolling of the steeple bell at 4:30 pm, and the musical prelude will begin at 4:45 pm. This year's prelude will feature music by French composers, including Fauré, Satie and a haunting native-Canadian Christmas chant transcribed by a French priest in the 17th century. Rev. Kent Schneider, pastor of Farmington NH, United Church Of Christ, will conduct the service. Rev. Schneider, an accomplished trumpet player, along with other local musicians, will lead the singing. All attending are invited to stay for light refreshments, which will be served following the service. This historic church, built in 1869,
is a wonderful surviving example of the many rural churches which dotted the New England landscape in the 19th century, and it remains today little changed from its original design. The church is heated by a wood burning stove which was installed at the time it was built. It also features embossed tin walls and ceiling with an oil lamp chandelier and traditional seasonal decorations will be in place for this service. The church no longer has an active congregation but continues to be maintained by a board of trustees, and now provides a venue for various music and other community events. Current music events include occasional concerts and a weekly country, bluegrass and gospel jam session. The opening of the church for this year’s Celebration of Christmas is an opportunity to see and enjoy one of the unique structures and traditions in Tuftonboro, and all are invited to come to this special service. The church is 5 miles north of Wolfeboro on Route 109A across from the Tuftonboro General Store; parking is available and in the event of a winter storm, the service will be December 18. For more information about this service call 603-569-3861.

12 Days of Christmas … and More at the Capitol Center The “Twelve Days of Christmas” returns to the historic Capitol Center for the Arts (CCA) in downtown Concord on Friday, December 9 at 7 pm and Saturday, December 10 at 2 pm. This year marks the fifth annual performance of the family-friendly holiday event. The “Twelve Days of Christmas” features more than 100 young performers from across New Hampshire, and includes students of Eastern Ballet Institute, Concord Community Music School African timbre drummers, aerialists, and live musicians. Complementing the vivid choreography and costumes will be a spectacular 18-ft., light-up pear tree with a dancing partridge in her nest. The evening will feature everyone’s favorite holiday tunes and includes a heart-warming sing-along. Tickets for the two performances may be ordered by calling the Capitol Center for the Arts at 603- 225-1111 or at www.ccanh.com. Tickets may also be obtained at the CCA’s box office at 44 South Main St., Concord, NH, which is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm. Gian Carlo Menotti’s beloved children’s opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors, will be performed at the Capitol Center on Tuesday, December 13 at 11 am. The performance is part of the CCA’s Lincoln Financial School Series and is open to opera fans of all ages.
Amahl and the Night Visitors are coming to the Capitol Center for the Arts on December 13. This will be third year in a row that Opera North has produced the familyfriendly opera. One of the most popular holiday classics of all time, Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of a miraculous encounter between Amahl, a boy with a lame leg, and the Three Kings. The moving tale is a timeless and inspiring message of how faith, charity, unselfish love, and good deeds can work miracles. The familyfriendly holiday classic is a one-act, 45-minute opera, sung in English, and performed with a chamber orchestra and professional soloists. This year, local favorite mezzosoprano Erma Mellinger returns in the role of Amahl’s mother. Dr. Mellinger has been a faculty member of Dartmouth College since 1996 and has been a principal artist with many major opera companies. Baritone Trevor Neal, tenor Martin Clark, and baritone Javier Ortiz will play the Three Kings. Mr. Neal and Mr. Ortiz are returning from last year’s production of Amahl
and the Night Visitors. Mr. Neal, Mr. Clark and Mr. Ortiz also had roles in main stage productions of Opera North’s Summerfest 2016. Tickets for the December 13 performance may be ordered by calling the CCA at 603-225-1111 or online at www.ccanh.com. Opera North is also providing financial assistance to make it more affordable for school groups to
attend this performance; contact them at www.operanorth.org for details. The award-winning Capitol Center for the Arts inspires, educates, and entertains audiences by providing a quality venue for the performing arts as well as an eclectic variety of professional-level, artisticallysignificant presentations. The Center is conveniently located off Rt. 93 in downtown Concord, New Hampshire. The facility first opened in 1927 as the Capitol Theatre, a prime stop on the Vaudeville circuit; it later became Concord’s premier movie house and concert hall. After closing in 1989, it underwent a multi-million dollar renovation / modernization and reopened in 1995 as the Capitol Center for the Arts. Today, the Capitol Center is home to the 1,304-seat Chubb Theatre, the Spotlight Café, The Governor’s Hall ballroom, and the Kimball House, a stately Victorian mansion.

Local Homemade Soaps Make Awesome Gift By Sarah Wright A few years ago, I bought my first locally made soap, and it became the first of many such purchases. For me, the best part was that I felt clean, but my skin wasn’t left dry or tight. I also felt good about the purchase, supporting a local business and a product that didn’t have a lengthy list of unpronounceable ingredients. My favorite scents tend to be fruity or citrusy, a great pickme-up on a sleepy morning. But there are countless fragrances available—everything from herbals and florals, to fresh scents that make you think you’re on a beach vacation. And for those who’d rather not have any fragrance at all, you

can find that, too. With the holiday season upon us, why not add some homemade soap to your gift list? There is plenty of great soap makers right here in the Lakes Region. Christine Wittmann of Cats in the Cradle became interested in herbal medicine and skin care after several years of writing for Herb Companion and Herb Quarterly magazines. A friend to animals, Chris was taking care of several homeless and injured cats, and looking for a way to help raise money for their care. She started making soaps in 1991, after a friend showed her a basic recipe. From there, Chris began coming up with her own formulations, adding essen-

The soaps were a miracle for her own sensitive skin, and she hasn’t used commercial soaps since. Her soaps include Bay Rum, Pumpkin, Lavender, Rosehip and Oatmeal, Milk and Honey, New England Farmgirl (lavender, vanilla, and chamomile), Gardener’s Soap for dirt and grime, and the popular Kitchen Soap for removing onion, garlic, or fish odors from your hands. Other than soap, Chris also makes her own herbal salve and lip balm with herbs from her farm and other organic farms. “I love working with natural ingredients and creating new products,” says Chris, “I also enjoy working with antique and vintage images on the product labels.” That’s evident on her website at www.catsinthecradlesoap.com, where you can see the beautiful vintage packaging for yourself. in the Cradle soaps are also sold at Zeb’s in North Conway, Canterbury Shaker Village, Artisan’s Corner in Wolfeboro, and The Edge in Meredith. Susan Berry at Winnipesaukee Soap Company says that her soaps will “take you to your happy place!” With a background in holistic healing and aromatherapy, Susan first started out making soap as a hobby. As the “mother” of three Labrador Retrievers who were in the lake most of the year, she noticed that they were often dirty, wet, and stinky. She wanted to create a natural soap for them that also worked to repel fleas and ticks. So she got to work! The formulas for her successful Cool Dog Duke Brand and The Dirty Stinky Dog soaps are safe even for the sensitive skin of puppies, older dogs, and those with • Soap Continued on page 31

December, 2016 • Soap Continued from page 30 allergies. The soaps were selling well, but customers began asking if she was planning to make products for people, too. Turns out that many customers were already using the “dog” soaps themselves, and loving how they made their skin feel. Thus, the Winnipesaukee Soap Company was born! Susan still sells the Dirty Stinky Dog soap, but there are now over 30 seasonal varieties of soap for people, created in small batches. You can choose from goat’s milk soaps, yogurt soaps, soaps made with hemp seed oil or cocoa butter; soaps with healing salts, clays, and minerals; soaps with bits of almonds in them, oats, herbs, or even seaweed and coffee beans for gentle exfoliating! Her Made in the Shade soap, scented with a grapefruit citrus blend is right up my alley. “Essential oils are carefully blended to relax, rejuvenate, and restore your body, mind, and spirit,” says Susan, “just like a day at the lake.” Her soaps are available for purchase in Wolfeboro at Harvest Market and Butternuts, and in Gilford at the Gilford Country Store. The Winnipesaukee Soap Company also sells soap at holiday craft fairs and farmers markets to benefit the End 68 Hours of Hunger charity, which provides food to local school children that may not have food on the weekends. In the summertime, the soaps are available at The Libby Museum to benefit kids’ programs. You can also shop online at www. winnisoapco.com. There are two soaps specially made for the season in Candy Cane and Happy Holidays fragrances. Perfect for anyone on your list this year! Beveridge Craft Beer and Soap Company at 51 North Main Street in Wolfeboro, offers beer tastings at their popular soap store, where you’ll find soaps with names like Man Cave, Dude, Intoxicated, Beach Bum, and Happy Hour. Soaps are made using the finest nat-
ural oils and butters, and of course, beer. You might ask yourself, “Why beer?” “Well, there are actually many benefits to using beer in a soap recipe instead of water,” says soap maker, Lisa Beveridge, “The hops in beer have soothing properties for irritated skin, amino acids to soften skin, and polyphenols, which have an anti-bacterial effect.” I like their Citrus Soap of course, which contains Sam Adams Summer Ale. Visit them online at www.beveridgecraftbeerandsoap.com or call 978-880-3013 for store hours. Lilly Glatz of Cardigan Mountain Soapworks has been making soap for over 30 years, first starting when she was pregnant with her daughter, because she wanted her new baby to have the most natural products available. Years later, Lilly has three young granddaughters who have only used her soap since their first baths! Business has been booming, with new products like custom soaps for weddings and showers, and an adorable retail shop in Alexandria. She sells over 80 kinds of soaps with plenty to choose from, but her most popular soaps are Oatmeal Almond Honey, Lemongrass-Sage, Lavender Oatmeal with shea butter, and the energizing Morning Wake-MeUp. She also makes natural “Bugs Away” and “Ticks Away” repellent sprays, along with other botanical
products. Her newest product is a gift box containing tiny bars of soaps that have encouraging quotes on their labels. “So many people I know are going through difficult times,” says Lilly, “I wanted to give
them something that could offer a little encouragement along with aromatherapy.” The Cardigan Mountain SoapWorks store is located at 464 Mount Cardigan Road in Alexandria, and is open from 11 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Sunday. There are soaps for everyone on your list, with floral varieties, herbal formulas, earthy scents, winter-themed scents, fruity fragrances, and aromatherapy blends. Lilly also carries plenty of other gift items, including lip balm, essential oils, bath salts, lotions, local honey, maple syrup, items for pets, candles, and various teas. Visit the shop, or order online at www.cardiganmountain.com. If you have any questions, call 1-888-288-2248. Support local Lakes Region businesses this holiday season, and treat your skin to a wonderful, homemade soap!
