Make Christmas Memories at Castle in the Clouds By Barbara Wilson Photos by Maggie Stier It’s a late November afternoon. The recent call to “fall back” for Daylight Savings Time makes the shadows long on Moultonboro’s mountains. The road to Castle in the Clouds opens to public parking with spectacular views of a cold, but not yet iced Lake Winnipesaukee. Anticipation builds as I approach the Carriage House to meet the trolley. I’ve toured Thomas Plant’s “Lucknow” in spring, summer and fall, but what will I find at Christmas? Open for holiday tours for just the last two weekends in November, the Castle celebration actually starts weeks, even months, earlier with hundreds of hours of preparation in the 16-room mansion by museum curator Michelle Landry and her decorating team, local craftspeople who will exhibit at the Artisans Fair, musicians practicing holiday tunes, and Chef Gretchen Shortway and the Carriage House restaurant staff creating unique seasonal dishes. When I visited Christmas at the Castle last year, I was struck by the beautiful weaving of natural decoration with Jazz Age glitter. We drew up to the front door and stepped from the trolley to be greeted by warmly lit balsam-wreathed windows. The heavy wooden front door swung slowly open and we entered the foyer to be greeted by hanging pine, festive ribbons, and jewel-toned light. It is said Castle creator Thomas
Plant scoured Europe looking for a perfect location for retirement before accepting his niece’s suggestion of this tract of land in the Ossipee Mountains. Were the holiday garlands, ribbons, metallic and feathers, reproductions of decorations he brought back from the continent? Would his guests in the early 1900s have seen ornaments like this? I asked Landry and executive director Charles Clark. Their answer surprised me. When the fabulously wealthy Plant ran into financial problems just a few years after his estate was complete, he produced a meticulously staged marketing book showing many of its magnificent features. Although he mentioned outdoor winter activities, he was strangely silent about holiday celebration. Research has revealed little or no reference to how the Plants
brought Christmas to their mountain. Perhaps I should not be surprised. Outward facing displays of holiday cheer are a fairly modern innovation. Public Christmas trees were put up in New York and Boston for the first time in 1913, just a year before completion of Plant’s mansion. The lack of specific information may be a boon to the Castle staff, however. It allows them creative leeway in their displays. Last year Landry and eight dedicated co-workers and volunteers worked nearly non-stop for three weeks to bring the spirit of Christmas indoors. My eyes were rewarded by the sight of 12 decorated trees, 20 wreaths, 150 feet of sumptuous garland, countless feathers, pearls, spools and spools of ribbon, and an abundance of silver and gold, bringing the spirit of 1920s Christmas to the Castle.
This year, Landry tells me, it has taken a month to create “a modern take on Christmases past with inspiration from Lucknow’s interiors and Mr. and Mrs. Plant’s lifestyle on the estate.” Dominating the décor are “gorgeous flowers—an homage to Mrs. Plant’s love of gardening and her 100 foot long greenhouse that once wrapped around the lake side of the mansion.” The Castle Preservation Society has been carefully restoring the home to its 1924 appearance. Special projects this year have included restoration of the Master Bedroom. Its magenta and purple Christmas tree is coordinated with reproduction wallpaper, curtains and purple taffeta bedspreads that are expected to arrive soon. That colorful tree is not a standalone, though. Landry says, “Almost every room will feature a Christmas tree (or two!) that takes its inspiration from the color scheme of the room…reds and golds in Mr. and Mrs. Plant’s library, stunning greens and chocolate browns in the Main Hall (matching the emerald green marble on the fireplace and pool table, as well as the deep brown of the original oak wall paneling), and the gold, blue, and purple hues of the Tiffany glass skylight in the Staircase Hall.” Guests are invited to tour the mansion at their own pace while enjoying sounds of the season by local musicians. Christmas at the Castle is not all

Christmas in Effingham The South Effingham and West Parsonsfield Citizens Org. will present an annual Christmas in Effingham on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 at Taylor City on Route 153 in Effingham. All proceeds from the event will benefit the South Effingham Church and its restoration. Bill Taylor of Ye Olde Sale Shoppe is the primary sponsor of this annual event; his assistance and support have provided the impetus to make Christmas in Effingham a growing and happy experience. The newest attraction this year will be the Christmas Mailbox for letters to Santa Claus. Any child who wants to write to Santa can deposit a letter in the box and Santa’s elves will deliver them to the big man. Don’t be surprised if
you hear from him so be sure to include your name and address! The mailbox will be on the corner near Ye Olde Sale Shoppe so it’s easy to find. In the morning coffee, muffins, etc. will be available in the Taylor City Store from 11 am on, and lunch will be served. On Saturday, November 26, there will be a Christmas Concert in the South Effingham Church at 6:30 pm presented by Bradigan. The concert will end just after 7:30 pm, at which time a bagpiper will lead everyone in the church out to the square to join the crowd waiting there. More music and the dramatic countdown will result in the lighting of the Tree of Lights. The tree, now 60 feet tall, is draped with 1,200

lights in various colors and presents a spectacular sight as one drives up the highway. The Story of the Tree of Lights In 1964, Lee Judkins organized a group of IAH boys and girls who met in the South Effingham Church. They committed a great deal of time to the community of Effingham, including repairs and renovations, yard work, whatever was needed. One of their final projects in 1964 was the planting of the evergreen tree at the corner of Route 153 and Hasty Road. Each year they lit the tree as a gift to Effingham until 1980 when the group had become adults. In September, 1989, Steve Smith, one of the original members of IAH, died very suddenly. It was then that the “Tree of Lights” had its origin – the Star, purchased by Lee Judkins, was placed on the tree and dedicated to Steve’s memory. Anyone who wished
could reserve a bulb in memory of a loved one. Today 1,200 bulbs light the tree. The income provides care for the tree year round and for replacement of bulbs and other equipment. Other funds are added to the restoration plans for the church. Additionally, it also helps to provide a Christmas party for the children of Effingham and a Christmas concert and service. The Tree of Lights is a true memory of those who went before us and started the beautiful tradition and those who will follow and care for our tree. On Sunday, November 27, carolers will entertain in the square from 1 pm. During this time, Erik Jones, representing Friends of the Effingham Library and the Effingham Historical Society, will present a reading from Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol in the South Effingham Church.

Friends’ membership is open to all, and not only affords opportunity to attend Christmas at the Castle at night on November 18, but also gives member discounts on items purchased at the gift shop and admission to the Castle and designated special events. Christmas at the Castle is open the weekends of November 19 and 20 and and 25 through 27, 10 am-4 pm, with the last tickets sold at 3 pm. Online prepurchase of tickets and plans for early lunch are strongly recommended. For tickets, more information, and to become a Friend of the Castle, go to www.castleintheclouds.org.

There are activities for all ages, including craftmaking, carriage and horseback rides with Riding in the Clouds, holiday shopping at the locally-sourced Artisans Fair, and luncheon served 11:30 am to 4:30 pm at the Carriage House. For the first time, too, there will be an opportunity to experience Christmas at the Castle at night. At an exclusive event Friday, November 18, Friends of the Castle will see the home’s seasonal decorations and inherent beauty magically magnified by darkness all around. “Imagine the soft glow of Lucknow’s original Arts and Crafts

November art exhibit at Gafney Library Three artist friends are exhibiting at the Gafney Library in Sanbornville during November. Labeling their exhibit “L’oiseau” or “The Bird” (English translation of the French for those of you who need it!), Judy Brenner, Darlene Bean and Norman Royle have truly covered the walls of the library with “les oiseaux” (that is, more than one bird). Loons, hummingbirds, owls, herons, wrens, kingfishers, bluebirds – so many birds in so many art mediums – etchings, sculpture, lithographs, oils and watercolors – are candy for the eye. Posed on the library mantle are two sculptures by Judy Brenner of a snowy owl, a loon, and - ok, not a bird, but a dolphin in alabaster. Both Brenner and Royle broke theme by introducing at least one “non-birdlike” item. In Royle’s case, he has included one of his iconic antique watercolors of an old car and titles it “Bat Wing – 1959 Chevy.” Darlene Bean, however, stuck to the theme with her photographs of “Taking Flight (Burrowing Owl),” “Napping (Flamingo),” “Snoozing (Great Egret), “Loon with 2 Chicks” and “Young Barred Owl.” Darlene cajoled her brother, Russell Doane, who had a degree in photography, into teaching her the basics. She enjoyed working with the camera so much that she read everything she could get her hands on about photography, joined several local camera clubs, took online classes and even began to teach her own online class. Her art has been featured at
the Garvin Gallery Five and she has the

Three artists are exhibiting their work of “Les Oiseaux” at the Gafney Library in Sanbornville during the month of November. (Left to right: Darlene Bean, Judy Brenner, Norman Royle.) Art in the Park Festival in North Conway. Judy Brenner grew up in an agricultural environment and was influenced from childhood by wild flowers, open fields and animals. She graduated from UNH, where she studied art history, printmaking, painting and sculpture. Brenner has studied plein-air painting with Eric Aho and sculpture with Antoinette Schultz through Sanctuary Arts. Known for her wildlife etchings, Brenner offers many pieces to please. Norman Royle spent his career as an Executive Graphic Designer at Digital Equipment in Maynard, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Vesper George School of Art in Boston and studied under the late Philip Parsons
the leader of the Plein Air Art Group of Wakefield and Wolfeboro and was director of the Garvin Gallery in San-
bornville. He earned first place in oils at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Royle’s watercolors, acrylics and oils in this exhibit will continue to please his many followers. A Musical, Theatrical Holiday Season By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The holiday season is the most beautiful time of the year and it is filled with special music and events. The area has an abundance of holiday concerts and happenings in November and December. The Rochester Opera House is a wonderful place, offering plays and concerts year round. Just in time for the holiday season, the Strafford Wind Symphony features an Annual Holiday Pops Concert on Saturday, December 3 at 7 pm. The concert offers familiar favorites old and new, and a special narrated piece. Participate in the fun of a popular gift basket raffle and get in the spirit with the music of the season. Nothing says Christmas like the beloved traditional ballet The Nutcracker. The Rochester Opera House features Tchaikovsky’s glittering ballet with the Sole City Dance troupe performing on Dec. 10 and 11. (Other performance dates are December 15 and 16.) The ballet tells the story of Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, capturing the magic and wonder of the holiday season. Sole City Dance pulls out all the stops with elaborate sets, costumes, special effects and outstanding dancers. The story is full of charm and excitement with a captivating cast of characters to entertain young and old. On December 8 to 23, Dickens’ traditional holiday story, A Christmas Carol, takes place at the Rochester Opera House. Christmas just isn’t

Christmas without revisiting the beloved tale of the penny-pinching miser, Ebenezer Scrooge and the awakening of his long-forgotten festive spirit. The ghostly tale featuring the Past, Present and Future is brought to life in an exciting new musical adaptation. Keeping true to the original text, it draws upon the themes of time, family and society’s ills to warm even the coldest of hearts. Bringing the atmosphere of Victorian Christmas traditions to the stage, the joyous musical colorful characters and ghostly guardians, and it is the perfect way to get you into the Christmas spirit. Tickets for all shows can be obtained by calling the Rochester Opera House box office at 603-335-1992, emailing roh2@metrocast.net or visiting www. rochesteroperahouse.com. Get into the holiday spirit with holiday concerts at the beautiful Little White Church at 2371 Eaton Road (Rt. 153) in Eaton. On December 9 and 10 at 7:30 pm, talented musicians Dana Cunningham, pianist/composer and singer/songwriter Carol Noonan will present a Holiday Concert. Also on December 10, a craft fair and holiday luncheon with the Eaton Community Circle takes place at the church from 11 am to 4 pm. This is a chance to get some holiday shopping completed, and enjoy a great lunch with friends. If you love tranquil and beautiful holiday music, mark your calendar and plan to be at the Little White Church • Musical Continued on page 7

A Lot of Good stuff happening in Greater Ossipee The Greater Ossipee Valley Chamber of Commerce recently held their annual meeting to a likely record crowd and spirits are positive among local area businesses. The overall feeling is that our area is on the cusp of significant growth. One area of growth for people who’ve been around awhile is the addition of Eastern Propane in Tamworth. The New Hampshire owned family business was honored as business of the year. Anyone who meets this talented team of local people find them to be passionate about customer service and safety. It’s no wonder that their largest turnover of employees comes from retirement. If you talk with one of these employees while out doing their job, you may notice, they seem very happy to be working with this family owned business. Also honored with the Business Person of the Year Award was Vince Vaccaro of TriTek Events. In 2006 Vincent turned his passion of running into a business, with his company TriTek Events. Since its inception TriTek Events has organized many annual events such as the the King Pine Triathlon, the Camp Huckins Triathlon and the Beech River Run, which have brought thousands of people to the community. In the last three years, TriTek Events has helped raise an excess of $100,000 for charities; just another example of how local family owned businesses are giving back to the area and benefitting from local Chamber of Commerce membership. Another example of faith in the fu-

This business, established by Dr. Deane M. Chamberlain in the late 1960's has been at the current Water Village Road location since 1976. It was previously purchased by Dr. Richard M. Seibel, III in 1981. Dr. Lord purchased the business this past August. Dr. Lord attended Ossipee Central School and Kingswood Regional High School. She first worked for The Kindness Animal Hospital in high school as a kennel attendant. Now a
veterinarian, Dr. Lord brings her experience back to the team. She attended
The University of Vermont, completing a Bachelors of Science in 2006 and Masters of Science in 2009. Dr. Lord attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine with a clinical rotation at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2012. If you’re looking for a great place to start or grow your business, you owe it to yourself to look at all the benefits of locating in Eastern Carroll County, New Hampshire and then benefitting from joining the local Chamber of Commerce. The office formally located next to the great folks at Watson’s General Store, have recently relocated to a less congested area next to Adventure Boot Camp and the Hairitage House, just south on Route 16. You’ll also find the Chamber online at www.ossipeevalley. org.
