Last year may have been a lot of things to a lot of people but one thing it surely wasn’t was predictable.

I mean who foresaw last year’s record-setting high in the U.S. stock market, the plunge in global crude oil prices, Russia’s naked grab of Ukraine’s sovereign territory or the Obama administration’s FARM & FOOD FILE reaching out to Cuba?

By Alan Guebert Not me; I was a solid “Wow,” “Whoa,” “Nyet,” and “Really?” on four of the biggest events to rock both the United States and its farmers in 2014.

This year I’m not taking any chances and announcing 2015’s first big global event, the already announced (on Dec. 5 by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization) “International Year of Soils.” The goal of this yearlong, worldwide emphasis, explains the U.N., is “to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions.”

You would think that everyone in the world might already be aware of how this thin layer of life-giving skin separates humanity’s continuing rise from its complete collapse or that our future is rooted in how we responsibly and sustainably treat the very ground we stand on. After all, it’s not like soil conservation and soil health are dirty little secrets. The science underpinning both is well known and widespread.

What may be even less secret but far dirtier is how deeply and how long we’ve abused soil. We don’t just treat it like dirt; we treat it as though it’s less than dirt.

For example, according to a 2001 report published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, the yield reduction in Africa due to soil erosion already stands at more than 8 percent.

That irreversible loss doesn’t sound like much if you farm in the black earth country of Illinois or the yards-deep soil of the Pacific Northwest’s Palouse.

It’s life and death, however, if you live — or hope to live — in Tanzania or Kenya. The story is the same in many of the world’s key farming regions. According to the same NRCS study, the “annual loss in productivity” due to soil erosion and degradation in southern Asia is equal to “36 million metric tons of cereal equivalent.”

In U.S. terms, 36 mmt “cereal equivalent” is 65 percent of the entire 2014-15 American wheat crop.

We in the United States have no room to brag. “It is estimated that the total annual cost of erosion … is about $44 billion per year or about $247 per hectare

Taken across the globe, total soil erosion and soil degradation numbers are knee-buckling: “The annual loss of 75 billion tons of soil costs the world about $400 billion per year, are about $70 per person per year.”

Changing the perspective doesn’t change the importance of soil or soil erosion. According to USDA, only three percent of Earth’s surface is “considered as prime Class I land … (while) another eight percent is in Classes II and III. This 11 percent of land must feed … the 7.6 billion expected in 2020 …”

But “high population density is not necessarily related to land degradation; it is what a population does to the land that determines the extent of

degradation.”

And population continues to grow; the amount of arable land does not. Writing for the Dec. 22 issue of Agri-Pulse, Marshall Matz, the former counsel for Senate ag committee, cited European data that shows the amount of arable land per person today is equal to 0.4 acre, or a patch 40 meters by 40 meters. By 2050, with 2 billion more in population, that tiny parcel will shrink by 30 percent.

Small? You bet. But it’s bigger than the six inches of thin-and-getting-thinner topsoil that separates success from catastrophe if we don’t take better care of the gift we’ve been given.

We can. We must. Now. This year.

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer The Iowa Soybean Association is working to increase grower profits from crop production by using information and data generated by on-farm trials and testing through its OnFarm Network program. Improving yields and profits begins with monitoring and analyzing your soybean strategy.

“The number one recommendation is to evaluate and validate everything you do in your soybean strategy,” said Pat Reeg, researcher and director of On-Farm Network Pat Reeg for the Iowa Soybean Association, based in Ankeny, Iowa.

Technology has equipped farmers with combine yield monitors, GPS for accuracy of field measurements, and planters capable of doing variable population on the go.

“So whatever you are doing, evaluate each strategy to see if there are opportunities to improve,” Reeg said.

In 2005, at least two-thirds of yield trials across the state had 60 bushel and higher yields. Reeg found that excess moisture in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013 was often limiting yields.

“Weather extremes are always an issue, but when a farmer asks me how to grow bigger yields I ask him a series of questions. When do you plant your soybeans? Most say after corn is planted, so that tells me they don’t prioritize soybean planting yet there is a lot of data suggesting four-bushel better yields by planting early.

“Then I ask what row width and it’s usually 30 inches, the same as corn. Yet we have lots of data indicating narrow rows are another yield increase strategy. Then I ask about fertilizer for their soybeans. Again we know corn gets the fertilizer with maybe some residual fertilizer available for the soybeans.

“Also we don’t put as much time and effort into evaluating soybean varieties as we do corn hybrids. I suggest that growers take a closer look at soybean varieties. There are differences, especially in how they work across various soils. I’m not making excuses, but because there are so many variables we need to explore as many as we can,” said Reeg.

Reeg said that 150-bushel soybean yields are possible, but more isn’t always better.

“A few growers have done it (150-bushel yields), but the bigger question is whether it is profitable.

One thing we stress in our research and hundreds of replicated strip trials across the state is to look at the profitability. Just getting more bushels doesn’t necessarily get you more profit,” said Reeg.

Anderson: Farmers are quick on acceptance. Academics want to repeat things over and over before they publish and share. So we remind our academic researchers that farmers want things as soon as possible. But even if they are quick on new technologies, farmers want it demonstrated to them also. They know their investment is big and it also needs to be worthwhile.

Q: How does this relate to new varieties in the marketplace?

Anderson: We continue the argument between conventional soybeans and traited (genetically modified organisms) soybeans. As long as markets persist in Europe and Asia where we have to worry about those issues, then I think farmers need to be watching for these issues also. But if we go through the regulatory processes correctly and work with these countries properly so they will accept our products, then we should be fine.

Q: Is genetic gain still the main priority of the academic world or is it now private industry?

Anderson: We’re trying to engage

everybody in those discussions.

Depending upon whom you talk with you get an answer either way. We all have a place to fit into the research spectrum, but if you’re just talking about good gene discovery and genetic improvement, I think even industry folks would tend to agree that responsibility is still up to the universities.

Q: If we grow less corn next year because profits have disappeared, how much more soybeans are we likely to grow in 2015?

Anderson: This year’s increase across the board for both soybeans and corn was terrific in terms of meeting domestic and world markets. But I’m not a marketing guy. It’s anybody’s guess for 2015. However based on a growing China and other Asian market demand, I think we’ll have the opportunity to grow even more soybeans in 2015.

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — Southern Minnesota farm families accepted the challenge to create a legacy farm at the Transitioning Your Farm Workshop at South Central College in December. Using tough talk, anecdotes and humor, David Broderius Iowa farmer and family business consultant Jolene Brown motivated 130 farmers to plan now for retirement, incapacitation and death.

“The adult child living closest to the one in need are the ones that are getting written out of the will because they get mad at you,” said Brown.

Taylor Broderius Brown offered tools and worksheets to assist farmers in developing a successful business worth passing on, creating an estate plan and an ownership transfer plan. The workshop was sponsored in part by the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association.

Today many farms are incorporated as a limited liability corporation or S corporation while others are trusts and partnerships. Many families do not follow procedures of annual meetings and filings.

“You must operate as your structure,” reminded Brown.

Brown advises awarding sweat equity — earned capital in lieu of wages — to farming children at the annual meeting.

“You do not reward sweat equity at death,” said Brown.

At workshop close, Brown asked farmers the “keeper” they learned and their plan of action.

“The big takeaway is a lot of communication in the family,” said David Broderius, a farmer near Hector, Minn., who plans to get together with his family.

David attended the workshop with his son, Taylor Broderius, who was home from the University of Minnesota where he is majoring in agricultural industries and marketing. After college, Taylor will work with his dad to manage the farm and accept the reins when his dad “retires.” Taylor hopes to eventually have his own family who will continue to farm.

As a boy, Taylor worked with his dad in the fields — sugar beets, corn, soybeans, sweet corn and peas — and always wanted to be a farmer. These days, he’s a “farmhand” building up his sweat equity.

Meanwhile, Taylor’s younger brother is not interested in farming. A key topic throughout the day was how farming and non-farming siblings can be compensated equitably.

Attorney Kaitlin M. Pals, of Gislason & Hunter Attorneys at Law in New Ulm, made the point that while the farming kid must have control of the farm, they don’t need to keep the entire economic value.

According to the panel, the best way to find good help is to talk to neighbors and look for professionals who specialize in agriculture.

ment to the younger generation. Selling farmland and cashing in insurance and IRAs may be possibilities. A buy-sell agreement is often a component of a farm exit strategy in which there are many options for the farming and non-farming children.

For some farms, creating a business continuation plan separate from the estate plan takes some of the emotion out of the process, advised Peterson.

Long-term care insurance also should be considered. According to the University of Minnesota Extension Service, one in two Americans over the age of 65 will have an extended nursing home stay, with the average nursing home stay of two-and-a-half to three years.

Willour asked the audience if they could afford $14,000-$20,000 per month for long-term care.

‘Outstate’ legislators to focus on infrastructure the gas tax is not an option to pay for rural roads and bridges. He suggested bonding for local roads to come out of the $1 billion surplus or put bonding into local roads and bridges.

“People in my district don’t really support that. We need to search for a different way to fund rather than Tony Cornish a gas tax,” said Cornish.

Rep. Paul Torkelson, R-District 16B, said there are three pieces of good news: $1 billion surplus; every-

body is talking about transportation; and he and his counterpart in District 16A have been appointed chairperson and vice chairperson to the House bonding committee so there may be a rural emphasis.

“Everybody is in total agreement that infrastructure needs to be addressed,” said Gunther.

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — Rural legislators are heading back to work this month to face the tax burden of farmers, rural transportation infrastructure and over-regulation. Despite a $1 billion surplus, securing funds in Greater Minnesota will still be a challenge.

At the Rural Legislative Panel held in December at South Central College, Southern Minnesota state legislators answered questions about the 2015 session.

Senator Julie Rosen, R-District 23, said that the legislative session will be a fight between rural and metro Minnesota for project funding. Rosen said eliminating the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Citizen’s Board is a priority.

“That has affected the dairy industry immensely,” said Rosen.

Julie Rosen The MPCA permitting process is also holding up mining in northern Minnesota, home to one of the largest copper and nickel deposits in the world. Supporters say the mining industry could bring in 3,000 good-paying jobs.

Rep. Clark Johnson, DFL-District 19A, said fully understanding the effects of agriculture and mining on the environment is more important than rushing into projects.

“Issues on water are particularly complex. Who doesn’t value clean water? It behooves us as a state to do it right,” said Johnson.

Clark Johnson Johnson added that science shows there is a problem with agricultural runoff. Since producers care for the land and water, he would like the ag community to use science-based evidence to take the lead in achieving mutual environmental goals.

“Golf courses in the Twin Cities use more water than all our livestock and ethanol producers down here,” rebutted Rosen.

Rep. Bob Gunther, R-District 23A, said he will be looking at efforts to stop the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus. The subject was absent in the last session.

Minnesota also has a shortage of agriculture teachers, but Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall is in the process of starting an ag educators education curriculum.

“We need to keep ag strong,” said Rosen. “All of the institutions realize how important that is. We need hands-on, boots on the ground in agriculture also — not just research.”

Jensen called on rural Minnesota to unite and create a cohesive plan instead of towns competing for funding. Often funding goes to metro transportation because the Met Council has a plan.

College costs The panel addressed student loan Vickie Jensen debt and rising tuition costs. Gunther said employers are willing to help pay the tuition for skilled workers for a tax credit.

“We have employers waiting for trained employees,” said Gunther.

As an academic advisor for Minnesota State University Mankato for 30 years, Johnson said the biggest challenge for students was paying their bills due to rising tuition especially over the last 15 years.

In 2014, a tuition freeze was passed, but a major effort must be made to reduce tuition, which means increaing the state’s share, said Johnson.

Rosen suggested loan forgiveness with the promise to provide services in your home area while Jensen suggested loan consolidation to combine loans and pay at a lower rate.

Ag strong Legislators listed concrete actions they will take to keep agriculture producers and agri-businesses from exiting Minnesota.

Torkelson is introducing legislation to eliminate the MPCA Citizen’s Board. He said a large dairy exited Minnesota due to an unfair permit ruling.

Johnson reminded the audience that as a whole Minnesota is doing well with a $1 billion surplus and the lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Johnson cited a 2014 bill that established a renewable mandate for bio-fuels, which promotes agriculture Cornish contended that many Minnesota farmers could be doing better. Expansion and permitting is easier in Iowa, explained Cornish.

Rosen’s goal is to reach a balance.

“I don’t think Greater Minnesota has been treated fairly,” said Rosen. “My other goal is to give you kids an opportunity to take a job where you want a job.”

Permitting regulations need to get some “sensibility back,” said Rosen, who plans to school legislators on the importance of ag to the state’s economy.

“If you start to fail out in Greater Minnesota, in agriculture, then you’ve got some serious issues,” said Rosen.

Rosen is confident that the Legislature will act on transportation and adjusting farm property taxes.

Jensen said she would tackle the estate tax so that farmers can afford to pass on their legacy farms. She was unable to save her husband’s family farm in Minnesota. She became choked up when she talked of her son attending school to work on diesel tractors. Her son has lost the opportunity to farm.

“I will fight every day to try to make sure that we will keep agriculture in Minnesota and keep it strong,” said Jensen. ❖

Fit for a Queen Green Chile Soup 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 2 pounds lean pork loin, cut into 1⁄2-inch cubes 1 cup flour, mixed with salt and pepper to taste, for dredging the pork 2 tablespoons minced garlic 2 cups diced onions 3 cups diced tomatoes 2 cups canned green chiles, seeded and diced 1 cup tomato juice 1 cup water 1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce 1 tablespoon coriander Salt and pepper to taste In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat the oil.

Dredge the meat in the flour until well coated. Add to the heated oil and brown on all sides. Add the garlic and onion to the meat and simmer until the onions are tender. Stir often, getting all the bits from the bottom of the pan.

Add the tomatoes, chiles, tomato juice, water, Tabasco sauce and coriander. Simmer until the meat is tender, about one hour. Add salt and pepper if necessary. Serves 6-8.

While that wish may not have come true for the majority of dreamers, it’s still fun to learn about the cowgirl life — which was a lot more sweat and dust than lipstick and pretty fringes.

Experiment with coffee cake mix-ins COOKBOOK, from pg. 13A This simple six-ingredient cake is deceptively decadent, with loads of sour cream, fruit and nuts. (Experiment with dried cherries, craisins or other fruit if you’re not a fan of raisins; use chopped pecans, almonds or mixed nuts if walnuts aren’t your thing.)

This cake would freeze well so you might as well plan ahead and double the recipe.

Liz’s Crummy Coffee Cake 2 2/3 cups brown sugar 4 cups flour 1 cup margarine 1 pint sour cream 1 pound raisins 1 cup nuts (walnuts are preferred) Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine brown sugar, flour and margarine in a medium bowl. With your hands (wash them first after riding, Liz cautions!), crumble all until it is ... well, crumbly. Remove 1⁄2 cup of the crumbles and set aside.

To the mixture remaining in the bowl, add sour cream, raisins and nuts. Stir and blend well. Pour batter into an 8x8 buttered ovenproof dish. Top with reserved crumbles. Bake for 80 minutes. Serve warm with strong black coffee.

■ Traditional scrapple is made with some pretty hor-

rifying ingredients, otherwise known as offal; if you don’t know what that is, go ahead and Google it but I won’t go into it here because I don’t want to lose my appetite for the next week. The following recipe, however, is a very NICE version with lovely fresh, wholesome ingredients and not a nasty-chewy-meatish bit anywhere. I fried it up one recent holiday morning as a side dish, and it was very well received, especially considering it was “new” and “different,” two adjectives that don’t always go over so well at my table.

Scrapple 1⁄2 pound ground pork sausage seasoned with sage 1 cup yellow cornmeal 3 cups water, divided Salt and pepper to taste Bacon fat or vegetable oil Pour the cornmeal into a saucepan and add 1 cup of water. Mix until smooth. Add the sausage and remaining 2 cups of water. Cover and cook on low heat until thick, about 25-30 minutes. Pour mixture into a greased loaf pan (9x5x3) or a 5-pound coffee can, washed and rinsed. Cool. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Remove scrapple from pan or can. Slice 1/3 inch thick and fry in a small amount of bacon fat or oil until brown and crisp around the edges. Serves 6.

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer ST. CLOUD, Minn. — With sleeves rolled up and pointer in hand, David Kohl talked hard and fast about the commodity super cycle burnout at an AgStar event in St. Cloud in December.

“That super cycle of the past four David Kohl years … None of us saw it coming so rapidly. Also it lasted longer than any previous cycle. And today there’s enough bumps in the road ahead to suggest equity might be a real issue for agriculture, not just farmers but the input suppliers too,” said Kohl.

Kohl, professor emeritus at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., is an in-demand speaker who has traveled across America and Canada talking to farm audiences, agri-business leaders and agricultural lenders. At Virginia Tech, Kohl taught agricultural and applied economics.

To define benchmarks of the super cycle burnout, Kohl tracked the farm equipment and seed industry.

“All the majors have reduced their work force.

With less money in the checking account, farmers are also sending signals of using less fertilizer. Seed companies will have some battles getting their $300 trait-enhanced hybrids out there. And it appears farmers may do some swapping of corn acres for soybean or even wheat acres ... sort of as a means to lessen the pain,” said Kohl.

Kohl said 10 percent annual growth rate across most of the free world during the super cycle has slowed to less than 4 percent today.

“Emerging nations, which were fueling our agricultural explosion because of their growing appetite for U.S. farm goods, have slowed considerably,” said Kohl.

Q: Is the slowdown in our U.S. farm economy happening elsewhere?

Kohl: Yes, what we are seeing is a bifurcated world economy. It’s split. The United States is probably the best economy in the world whereas the emerging nations like Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are slowing down. That’s critical because their growth was driving our ag and rural economy. They were demanding food, fiber and fuel. They still are but not always at our prices.

Q: Has there been too much supply?

Kohl: Everyone talks about over-abundance of supply. But it’s actually a demand issue. To some extent our ‘good times’ priced ourselves out of some markets.

Other countries have stepped up to fill that gap.

Q: We now have the millennials stepping up to the plate. Because they are mostly underfinanced with heavy debt loads, are these younger folks going to get squeezed even harder in this agricultural slowdown?

Kohl: The millennial is defined as a person less than 34 years of age. They haven’t yet taken an economic punch, particularly here in the agricultural

They’re here in our audience today. They’re continually searching for more information. They want to learn how they too can hunker down and adjust in these tighter economic times.

Q: But is an exodus from farming inevitable?

Kohl: That is a continuous process even in socalled good times. Not everyone survives. The consequences of bad judgment are costly in an industry as competitive as agriculture. But this super cycle brought a lot of millennials into agriculture and a lot of older folks stayed in agriculture because financially it’s been the best time of their lives.

However as the economic adjustments start being made we’ll see some of these older folks gravitate out of agriculture. And that can and will create opportunities for other individuals if they have properly positioned their business.

Q: Why the on-going confusion about the new farm bill?

Kohl: Primarily because a lot of people don’t yet know the implications. They have not studied; they have not gone to information sessions. ... The reality of making a five-year decision is somewhat overwhelming to some ... at least at this stage. It’s obvious that a lot of education is needed. I tell people

this: Government is something you can’t manage; you’ve got to manage around it. If you stick to your basics of finance, marketing and management you’re probably going to do OK. Q: Is this projected world population of 9plus billion people by 2050 going to exceed our food production capacity?

Kohl: We’re told that by 2050 we’re going to need 70 percent more food, fiber and fuel. But these same experts are saying we’ll only be using 70 percent of the resources we are using today. So obviously more food per acre is going to happen. My answer is yes.

We will feed the world in 2050. But the problem is one of infrastructure and distribution. Getting the product delivered to the people that need it. We’ll continue to have military, political and social issues in these countries that need the food so these barriers will have to be lessened. The reality is that there will always be shortages of food because of extraneous factors.

Q: Are farmers in other parts of the world catching up with technology and the ability to produce like American farmers are doing?

Kohl: It’s no doubt that American and Canadian farmers are ahead of the pack. It takes a complete system. We not only have the technology, we also have the can-do attitude and the education within

our farming ranks … partly due to University and private industry companies that do the research and launch these new techniques. The problem in many areas of the world’s farming belt is that they now have access to the technology, but they don’t have the skill base amongst their producers. They don’t have those supportive components that bring that productivity to fruition. North America is still a global economic leader. Yes, China has moved into those ranks also but their internal issues of air pollution, fouled water supplies, and growing disgust within the rank and file of their population is a huge cloud overhanging the future of China.

Q: The Ukraine is locked up in political disputes. Will they emerge as a primary grain and livestock powerhouse once again?

Kohl: They are on the verge but internal conflicts are strangling this potentially rich country. Today 60 percent want to go with Europe; the other 40 percent with Putin. Also they have been under centralized control for so long that they aren’t yet thinking like capitalists. So economic incentive seems stymied.

They have great resources but their central control thinking will keep them bogged down. That somewhat is the issue in Brazil and Argentina also.

Grain Angles China approves GMO trait

The following market analysis is for the week ending Jan. 2.

CORN — Corn rolled over this week, closing lower for four straight sessions in the holiday-shortened week. Funds exiting long positions every day and a strong U.S. dollar were factors in the corn sell-off, as well as weakness in wheat. The U.S. dollar surged to its highest level this week since December 2005, adding as a drag on commodity prices in general.

Comments from Europe indicate they are considering taking further quantitative easing measures soon on increasing risk of PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. deflation. Wheat had provided St. Paul support for the corn market when there was anxiety over what Russia would do to slow their exports.

Once Russia released new regulations on exports, it was a classic “buy the rumor, sell the fact” type scenario that eventually began to pressure corn prices as well. Thin trading volumes were noted with many traders extending their holidays.

Weekly export sales provided a small bright spot to the week when they were released a day late due to the New Year holiday, but weren’t good enough to turn the market higher. Weekly export sales were 35.2 million bushels, higher than we need on a weekly basis to hit the U.S. Department of Agriculture 1.75 billion bushel forecast and on the high side of estimates. We have 63 percent of the USDA’s export projection currently on the books.

The battle of supply versus demand in the cattle market will continue as we move into the new year. Another thing that seems to have changed in the cattle market is the psychology. There seems to be a more negative attitude toward the market’s ability to sustain any further price appreciation. With ample supplies of competitive meats at prices significantly lower per pound, the consumer may turn to these lower prices for protein. Thus the struggle between supply and demand will likely continue into 2015.

Producers should be more attuned to the market as we move into the new year and protect their inventories as the market conditions dictate.

After a long slide in hog prices since the month of July, the market appears to be finding some support as prices are now nearly steady on a day to day basis.

Last fall Chinese officials started rejecting corn and distillers grains containing the “unapproved” genetically modified trait called MIR-162. Rejections of over one million tons of corn and distillers grains have impacted exporters along with farmers here in the United States. Costs of the rejections are estimated to be near $1 billion dollars. Following these rejections major grain exporters have filed suit for damages.

Since China is in the top three corn exporting destinations, recent rejections of corn had a negative impact on prices. Since the crop was not segregated in the commodity supply chain, it’s extremely difficult to ensure the trait is not in bulk shipments sent to export channels destined for China.

It should be noted that the trait has been approved for nearly four years here in the United States. Until last year, rejections for containing the trait were unheard of to most.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that China has finally approved the MIR-162 GMO trait from Syngenta along with two other GMO soybean trait approvals for DuPont Pioneer and Bayer CropScience. Recently Syngenta confirmed they have received a safety certificate for the MIR-162 trait which formally gives import approval. This news is welcomed by the export community, however China’s current large domestic corn supplies

Weekly ethanol production slipped this week, down 20,000 barrels per day to 972,000 barrels per day.

Stocks were up 479,000 barrels to 18.1 million barrels and the biggest stocks number since October.

Out of Purdue University, per-acre profit for corn in 2015 is anticipated to drop 28 percent from 2014 to around $194 per acre. Costs are expected to hit $450 per acre. For soybeans, profit is expected to fall to $253 per acre, the lowest since 2009. Dr. Good from the University of Illinois is projecting corn prices in 2015 to average near $3.50 for the 2014-15 crop and average near $10 per bushel for soybeans.

Bean prices in 2015-16 could average in the upper $9 level.

OUTLOOK: March corn hit a new recent high at $4.17 this week before retreating lower. It closed the week at $3.95 3⁄4 per bushel, down 19 cents. The first resistance will be around the $4 area, then $4.06 1⁄2, with support at $3.75 1⁄4 per bushel.

December 2015 corn was 19 1⁄2 cents lower at $4.19 1⁄2 per bushel. On the weekly chart, corn established a key reversal lower. For the year, nearby corn fell 6 percent. Funds are still holding net long positions and the tide is favoring the lower side. We could see further liquidation when all the traders return next week. The next driver for price direction will be the Jan. 12 crop report and how/if acreage and yield will be changed.

MARKETING

SOYBEANS — Soybeans set the weekly high on Monday and moved lower throughout the balance of the week. March soybeans posted a key reversal lower on the weekly chart. South American weather has cooperated for crop development to keep high production forecasts intact. Weekly export sales were within expectations, but on the low side at 22.5 million bushels. We have already sold 85 percent of the USDA’s export projection.

The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange pegs Argentina’s bean planting at 90 percent complete versus 76 percent complete last year.

Brazil has harvested early beans which are showing a yield of 51-52 bushels per acre, according to some reports. China’s growth is attracting some attention. Its purchasing managers’ index for manufacturing for December dropped to its lowest level in 18 months to 50.1. A number under 50 indicates contraction.

OUTLOOK: March soybeans fell out of the recent range by gapping lower on the first trading day of 2015. The gap from $10.22 to $10.22 1⁄2 will act as

first resistance with first support at $9.91, then $9.79 3⁄4 per bushel. March soybeans closed the week down 46 1⁄2 cents at $10.07 1⁄2 per bushel with the November 2015 contract 35 3⁄4 cents lower at $9.93 1⁄4 per bushel. For the year, nearby soybean prices dropped 22 percent. Without fresh bullish input, such as a weather event in South America, lower prices could be expected prior to the Jan. 12 crop report.

Nystrom’s notes: Contract changes for the week ending Jan. 2: Chicago March wheat tumbled 29 1⁄2 cents lower, Minneapolis fell 20 1⁄2 cents and Kansas City dropped 27 1⁄4 cents. February crude oil hit its lowest level since May 2009 at $52.03 before closing $2.04 lower for the week at $52.69 per barrel. Ultra-low-sulfur diesel declined 8 3⁄4 cents, reformulated blendstock for oxygenate blending skidded 9 1⁄4 cents lower and natural gas closed down 3 cents. The next USDA crop report is Jan. 12 which will include the final acreage and yield numbers for the 2013-14 crop year. ❖

Hog versus cattle GMO acceptance ongoing issue prices stabilize TEALE, from pg. 17A The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the Hogs and Pigs Quarterly Report on Dec. 23. The results were as follows: All Hogs 102 percent, Kept for Breeding 104 percent and Kept for Marketing 102 percent. The report was seen as slightly negative by the trade. However, little reaction was noted in the futures market on the days following the release of the report. Primarily since the futures were already discount to the cash in advance of the report.

Another thing that is helping to stabilize the hog market is the disparity of price between hog and cattle prices. This relationship has gone to new highs in the difference between finished cattle prices and finished hog prices. This is also reflected in the large difference in the beef and pork cutouts which has created more featuring of pork by the retailers.

This does not necessarily mean that hog prices will rally significantly in the near future, but the possibility of further support may lie below the current price structure. Producers are urged to remain cognizant of market conditions and protect inventories as warranted.

The December U.S. average all-milk price, at $20.30/cwt., is down $2.70 from November and is down $1.70 from December 2013. The All Milk Price averaged $23.97 for the year.

December corn, at $3.77 per bushel, was up 19 cents from November but 64 cents less than December 2013. Soybeans averaged $10.20 per bushel, unchanged from November, but $2.80 per bushel below December 2013. Alfalfa hay averaged $183 per ton, down $1 from November, and $3 per ton below December 2013. Corn averaged $4.11 per bushel in 2014, soybeans $12.47, and alfalfa hay averaged $200 per ton.

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the report shows the preliminary December cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $116.00/cwt., $32.60/ cwt. above December 2013. Milk cows averaged $1,935 per head in 2014.

■ Cash block Cheddar cheese starts the New Year at $1.57 per pound, up 7.5 cents on the New Year’s holiday-shortened week, but 47.25 cents below a year ago. The Cheddar barrels finished at $1.54, up 12 cents on the week but 38 cents below a year ago. No cheese was sold in the spot market on the week.

The market tone for Midwest cheese is steady with heavy production due to additional milk volumes, reports Dairy Market News. Many manufacturers took on additional milk supplies at $6.50 under Class. Buying is slow due to cheese prices dropping, while inventories are building.

Kurzawski: Cheese prices may hit bottom by February MIELKE, from pg. 19A Cheese production in the West continues to focus on fulfilling contracts.

The 2015 contract negotiations are still underway, with some manufacturers choosing to pursue different pricing methods. Cheese prices are unsettled as producers and manufacturers wait for the market to settle. Prices are at a level where manufacturers are comfortable keeping inventories. Recent price decreases have helped demand for domestic and export markets.

Price uncertainty is a concern throughout the industry, says Dairy Market News. Demand is expected to be good, at least through the football playoff season until the Super Bowl. After that, multiple factors such as the anticipated continuing strong milk supply, international pricing, and potentially weaker demand are increasingly discussed as matters of concern.

■ Cash butter closed Jan. 2 at $1.5550 per pound, unchanged on the week but a penny and a half below a year ago. Two cars found new homes on the week, both on Jan. 2.

Cream supplies were readily available and at reduced pricing this week, according to Dairy Market News. This led some butter churn operators to purchase additional spot loads along with more manufacturers electing to use cream internally instead of selling supplies in the spot market. Given the cream availability, churn rates are picking up.

The majority of production is directed toward 80 percent domestic butter with a few international orders being completed. Retail orders improved this week from reduced sales last week. Demand for bulk butter is light to moderate as prices range from market to 6 cents over the market, with various time frames and averages used. The market tone is unsettled. Manufacturers look to restock inventories.

Western butter prices remained steady as the year closed. Butter production is increasing as cream is available. Some butter churns were churning bulk butter to build and store inventories for the new year while others are looking to clear out stocks on hand.

The market is unsettled as both buyers and sellers attempt to determine the market direction.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk finished the week at $1 per pound, unchanged on the week. No powder was sold in the spot market this week.

■ I talked about the dairy markets on New Year’s Eve morning with FC Stone dairy broker Dave Kurzawski before USDA announced the December Federal order Class III milk price, ending the biggest profitable year for dairy farmers ever.

The discussion aired on Friday’s DairyLine and Kurzawski admitted that the news is “very bearish right now.” He stated that, in a worst-case scenario, he could see cheese prices falling to the $1.30s per pound level and called the uptick Tuesday and Wednesday as “window dressing for the end of the year.”

MARKETING

“There wasn’t any real trading,” he said, “And, when the sellers come back we could see things pull back, but we have to remember we have come off of record prices of $2.40.”

“That’s a big move,” he said, “but you have to recognize that demand at $1.50 is going to be plentiful domestically even as we roll into a historically quiet demand time period.”

But, he warned that the $1.30ish bottom could be reached as early as late January or early February.

The cloud on the horizon remains the export market. When asked when he thinks the international market will turn around, Kurzawski replied that there’s a camp of dairy market participants that believe the recovery won’t happen until the second half of 2015 as Chinese and Asian demand returns, which will impact the U.S. market.

He said there is no one smart enough to know exactly when that will happen, but he looks for it in the first half of 2015 and he bases his assumption on the Global Dairy Trade.

He admits that GDT price levels are depressed “but they are stable,” and he sees that holding for First Quarter “as there is no impetus for buyer worry out there to push prices up, but I don’t see them going down a whole lot more on the GDT and I think that some time in the First Quarter, maybe early Second Quarter you’ll start to see demand start to perk back up.”

ook! We’re going faster than those cars on the highway,” my wife exclaimed. “Isn’t it wonderful not to be driving!”

Inspired by a brief ride on the new Green Line light rail in St. Paul, my wife and I decided to take a trip that would have us traveling on all of Minnesota’s connected passenger trains. In early November we took the North Star from Big Lake to Target Field in downtown Minneapolis. From there we boarded the Green Line and rode it to the end of the line at St. Paul’s recently restored Union Depot. At the Union Depot we rode the rails of Amtrak to Winona, Minnesota’s gem on the Mississippi. Upon getting off the train, Amtrak station manager Dave greeted us.

“Some people think I talk too much and they back away from me,” Dave said. “But my job is to make sure passengers have a safe, economical, and enjoyable trip.” Most of the Amtrak stops in Minnesota are unmanned so Dave’s presence in Winona is a gift. He called the rental car company for us, gave us economical travel tips, and told us train stories.

He even walked all of us passengers across the dark and wet platform to the train on our return trip to Union Station.

“Be careful. It could be slippery,” he warned.

If Dave had been the only highlight of our train trip that would have been good enough.

An additional pleasant surprise was that, even though we planned on the Amtrak being late, it was on time both ways. We found the light rail easy to ride and passenger-friendly. The cars are bright, clean and roomy. Tickets are shockingly inexpensive.

Each ticket is good for two hours and allows you to get off for lunch or visiting, and to reboard again. We got off twice on our return trip. The North Star commuter train is equally clean, bright, user friendly and inexpensive. A trip from Big Lake to Minneapolis is only $7; $6 for seniors. Riding the North Star Link bus from St. Cloud to Big Lake costs less than $2.

North Star conductors are helpful, too. A conductor showed us how to use the ticketdispensing machine. Later he announced the stops: Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka.

“If Anoka is your absolutely favorite spot in the world you’ll want to get off at the next stop,” he joked over the intercom. ❖
