Northey: Aid available for water quality protection brings together both point sources, such as municipal wastewater treatment plants and industrial facilities, and nonpoint sources, including farm fields and urban stormwater runoff, to address these issues.

The initiative seeks to harness the collective ability of both private and public resources and organizations to deliver a clear and consistent message to stakeholders to reduce nutrient loss and improve water quality.

In addition to statewide cost share, 16 targeted Water Quality Initiative demonstration watershed projects have been funded to help implement and demonstrate water quality practices. The state has provided $7.4 million in funding to support these projects and has leveraged an additional $11.7 million in additional funding from partners and landowners. More than 95 organizations are participating in these projects.

Nine Urban Conservation Water Quality Initiative Demonstration Projects have also been funded.

The state has awarded $655,194 in funding and partners and landowners participating in the projects will provide $2.43 million to support urban conservation efforts.

Farmers are also encouraged to visit their local Soil and Water Conservation District office to inquire about additional opportunities for cost share funding through other programs offered at their local SWCDs. The cost share assistance was announced on May 12. Since then, the Governor has signed into law $9.6 million to support the Iowa Water Quality Initiative, which is an increase of $5.2 million from the $4.4 million provided last year.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship also received $6.75 million for conservation cost share, a portion of which can be used on management practices such as cover crops.

In the last two years this program has been available, over 1,400 farmers put in new nutrient reduction practices on over 144,000 acres. The state provided about $3.4 million in cost share funding to help farmers try a water quality practice for the first time and Iowa farmers provided at least another $3.4 million to support these water quality practices.

Background on Iowa Water Quality Initiative The Iowa Water Quality Initiative was established in 2013 to help implement the Nutrient Reduction Strategy, which is a science and technology based approach to achieving a 45 percent reduction in nitrogen and phosphorus losses to our waters. DES MOINES — Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey reminds Iowa farmers that funds are available to help install practices focused on protecting water quality. Practices eligible for this funding are cover crops, no-till or strip till, or using a nitrification inhibitor when applying fertilizer.

The cost share rate for first-time users of cover crops is $25 per acre, no-till or strip till are eligible for $10 per acre and farmers using a nitrapyrin nitrification inhibitor when applying fall fertilizer can receive $3 per acre. Farmers are eligible for cost share on up to 160 acres.

First-time users who apply by July 24 will be the first applications funded. First-time users who apply after July 24 will still receive priority consideration, but funds will also be made available to farmers that have used cover crops in the past for cost share assistance at $15 per acre.

“We already have $1.6 million in applications from more than 700 farmers interested in doing more on their farm to protect water quality. This includes first-time uses of cover crops as well as farmers who have tried them before and are willing to do even more,” Northey said. “Fortunately, as a result of the significant increase in funding for water quality, we have additional funds available. I hope interested farmers will contact their local Soil and Water Conservation District soon to learn more about the assis-

Rural Minnesota showing more income inequality

By NANCY MADSEN Mankato Free Press MANKATO, Minn. — Falling median income and wages and an aging population are driving the growth of poverty and inequality in rural Minnesota, local experts say.

Inequality in the Mankato region and state generally increased from 1999 to 2012, according to a report from Growth and Justice, a St. Paul research and advocacy group that promotes policies to raise the fortunes of low- and middle-class Minnesotans.

The group compiled poverty rates,

median incomes and inequality, measured by the Gini coefficient, for all of the counties in the state.

“Median income is going down, poverty is staying the same or increasing and the Gini coefficient is getting worse,” Growth and Justice President Dane Smith said.

Statewide, Minnesota had a poverty rate of 8.1 percent in 1999, No. 2 lowest in the country, which grew to 11.4 percent in 2012, No. 7. In 1999, Blue Earth County’s poverty rate was 12.9 percent, tied for No. 2 highest among the counties. In 2012, it was 19.4 percent, No. 8.

Median income has fallen from $64,819 in 1999 to $61,795 in 2012.

Inequality is measured by the Gini coefficient, which looks at the evenness of household incomes. If all household incomes were equal, the Gini would be 0.0; if one household collected all incomes, it would be 1.0. Across the country and the state, inequality has been increasing. In 1999, Minnesota’s Gini coefficient was 0.42, when it was No. 9 most equal among states. In 2012, it was 0.44, when Minnesota ranked No. 16. In 2012, Nicollet County’s Gini coefficient was 0.374, No. 7 most equal among counties.

“We’re still better than other states, as Minnesota has been a more equitable place,” Smith said. “Minnesota has been getting less equal. We’re headed in the wrong direction on key things.”

Rural suffers Rural Minnesota, especially northern Minnesota, suffered the most over the time frame and continues to suffer.

“The findings are not shocking to people who are well versed in public policy,” Smith said. “During the recession, economic distress was generally most problematic in rural areas and in the urban core. The exurbs and suburbs are the most affluent part of our state.”

“There is an aging population that is more prevalent in rural Minnesota,” said Brad Finstad, executive director of the Center of Rural Policy and Development. “There are pockets in rural Minnesota where there is a generational transition so that over onethird of population is over the age of 65. That means more and more folks are put on fixed income.”

It’s harder for rural areas to bounce back when an employer closes or leaves. And many young people leave for areas where they can work the same level job and earn significantly more, he said.

Agricultural areas were more of a mixed bag, said Thomas Legg, a senior lecturer at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, who compiled the research for Growth and Justice.

“In rural areas, where there were increases in median income, they were in agricultural counties,” he said.

“Where there were reductions in poverty and inequality, they were in agricultural counties, but not all of them.”

So improvements to commodity prices or a stronger agricultural market may have rippled out to improve

the local economies.

In south-central Minnesota, three counties saw improvements in their inequality measures: Le Sueur, Nicollet and Sibley. Nicollet carries the lowest inequality score, while Blue Earth carries the highest.

Student context Jonathan Zierdt, president and CEO of Greater Mankato Growth, said that these statistics need to be considered in a larger context. For example, the business group recently argued that Blue Earth County had a high young adult population primarily due to the student numbers at Minnesota State University. And young adults in Blue Earth County had a high percentage at the poverty rate. Students are not excluded from collection in these statistics, the researchers said, if they claim Blue Earth County as their home.

“The high student population makes us look poorly in data like this,” Zierdt said. “But if we can isolate the young adults who are living here and working full-time, we can see more clearly what kind of income disparity do we have at this point.”

Jim Gehrke, awareness coordinator with the Minnesota Valley Action Council, said Blue Earth County is largely representative of what’s happening across the country.

“The student population has very, very little to do with the overall poverty rate,” he said. “You look at the number of homeless children in the school system or the number of children who qualify for free and reducedcost lunches and you can see the increase.”

He blames 30 years of policy.

“When we have better-paying jobs, you have less inequality in general,” he said. “You have to provide some level of adequate living.”

For their part, Growth and Justice advocates for putting state resources into social safety net systems, education, environmental protection, health care, transportation and broadband Internet development as methods leading to more equality. Smith criticized the results of this year’s legislative session.

“Despite the new attention to greater Minnesota that we started with, I don’t think the goods were delivered to greater Minnesota in a way that would provide more equity,” he said.

“We got a little over three inches of rain” in the last two weeks, Rodney Froemming told The Land on July 2, but he wasn’t going to let the rain slow him down. “We’re still working on hay; got a lot of custom stuff.” Meanwhile, “the corn is about chest high,” he said, and “our rye is really starting to turn now.” Froemming believes

that the crop is about a couple weeks away from harvest. “The wheat is starting to turn,” and the soybeans are “looking really good, pretty much canopying now,” said Froemming. He estimates that the beans are eight to 10 inches tall. The crops are growing and the haying is slowly but surely getting done on the Froemming farm.

The Thorpes Canby, Minn.

“The crops are looking really good,” reported Nathan Thorpe to The Land on July 10. The corn is at least a week ahead of schedule, and Thorpe said he expects “to see tassels next week.” The soybeans look good, he said, and the crop is “filling in nicely.” Thorpe will be cultivating beans in a couple places to deal with water hemp. He said “it’s a wait-and-see game” for spraying. Overall, Thorpe said, “The crops are

sitting as good as we could ever be hopeful for this time of year.”

The corn that took a beating two weeks ago is making a comeback on the Marble farm. The Land spoke with Harlan Marble on July 10 and he was thrilled to report “the corn is pretty much up straight.” He estimates that eight percent of his corn was damaged in that June 22 storm. Marble predicts that if the weather stays

warm, the corn will be tasseling by next week.

Meanwhile, the soybeans are “absolutely fantastic; it’s unbelievable what’s going on.” He plans on spraying beans next week for white mold. Marble said the rain has helped keep the aphids and corn borer moths away. Right now the corn is rebounding and the soybeans are flourishing, and Marble is optimistic that things will continue to stay that way.

been nice, with temperatures in the 80s. Things have slowed down a bit on the farm so Haarstad said he has been “cleaning signs at our sign shop.” He was also looking forward to spending sometime at the lake with his family over the Fourth of July weekend. Haarstad said he is pleased with the crops — “We’ve caught up after being behind.”

Things are starting to heat up on the Lee farm, and that bump in temperature is helping the crops come around. The Land spoke with Joan Lee on July 2 as she reported that while the corn wasn’t going to be knee-high by the Fourth of July, she believed that in some spots “it could be fairly close to that.” Meanwhile, “The soybeans are looking really nice; the stand looks really good,” Lee said. Over in the small grains, the

“The dairy story isn’t so sweet. It is such a cyclical market. But where there are beef cattle, business has been fantastic. Also dairy farmers are always looking for ways to put up better quality hay faster and do it cheaper. So we have to keep up with those challenges.” ❖

This lets us empty some of our manure pits and get that knifed into the soil after the pea harvest. We also plow up about 150 acres each year so we get about three years on most of our alfalfa stands.”

The operation produces lots of milk.

The herd average is around 28,000 pounds of milk. Some cows are on 2X milking; the higher producing younger groups are on 3X. And those critters are doing about 90 pounds of milk per cow daily.

Milking time for those 3X cows is 6 a.m., 2 p.m., and 9 p.m. Every 24 hours the facility shuts down for about a four-hour “wash up” effort. Even so it boils down to about 20 hours of milking per day. ❖

Each time they host a show, David said they learn more things and it gets easier. That’s not saying they’re signed up for a future hosting, but a good hint that if asked, the Hernke crew would likely be on the agenda once again.

Cover story: Taking control through weed science

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor WASECA, Minn. — As several weed species are becoming resistant to multiple classes of herbicides, farmers are looking for new weed control tactics.

That’s why roughly 45 producers and agribusiness representatives attended the Advanced Weed Science Day at the University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center in Waseca July 9. The event focused on giant ragweed management and a demonstration of the new Enlist corn technology.

The takeaway was to build a system: rotate chemistries, use a preemergence herbicide, and time your post-emergence spraying.

“You can’t say that Roundup will kill it anymore,” said Mike Ide of Lester Prairie, Minn. His family farms corn, beans, sunflowers and wheat.

University of Minnesota Extension scientists led a field tour to demonstrate pre-emergence options and the timing of post-emergence applications. Agricultural practices were also explored.

“It’s all about trying to find the right steps to take to prevent it (weeds),” said Ashley Dowse, seed coordinator for Northern Country Co-op in Rose Creek, Minn.

Pre-emergence Tom Hoverstad, SROC research scientist, and Fritz Breitenbach, Extension integrated pest management specialist, led one of the tours.

The group viewed soybean and corn fields, where pre-emergence soil applications, also known as residual herbicides, were used alone. They saw fields

where only glyphosate was used postemergence. They also saw fields where a combination of preand post-emergence chemicals were used.

“When you use a ‘pre’ Fritz Breitenbach you shrink the range of ragweed sizes that you have to deal with,” said Breitenbach.

Pre-emergence herbicides need moisture to activate in the soil so the effectiveness rate varies. Even so, they help to lower weed population to make control more manageable.

“Another important aspect is they control many other weeds than what your target might be,” he said.

To reduce resistance, Extension educators advise using different herbicide classes. Having more than one strategy places different selection pressures on weeds, which makes it difficult for weeds to adapt.

“Sometimes the only way that you can use different classes is if they are soil applied,” said Breitenbach. “Rotate your chemistries.”

Giant ragweed is easier to control in corn than in soybeans.

“If giant ragweed is an issue,” Hoverstad said, “one of the best options is to plant corn.”

“Multiple years of corn,” added Breitenbach.

“If you are going to use this technology, don’t think of it as a rescue treatment,” he said.

Dow’s research resulted in a mix with reduced odor, drift and volatility, but Gunsolus cautioned that it must be used exactly as directed.

The EPA placed conditions on applying Enlist Duo, including a 30-foot no-spray buffer zone around the application area and no application when the wind speed is over 15 mph. Spray nozzles less prone to drift are required and the spray tank must be rinsed three times with the rinse water applied to fields.

In the trial, Enlist trait corn was planted May 21.

A pre-emergence application was done the same day. At the V4 stage on June 16, Enlist Duo herbicide was applied.

Breitenbach was impressed by the ease of handling and lack of odor and off-target movement of Enlist Duo. Lisa Behnken, Extension crops educator, concurred that Enlist Duo was very effective and a good player where there is resistance, but to make the product sustainable, it can’t be used everywhere.

She also advised making a three- to five-year plan for chemical use and agricultural practices.

“Be better stewards of the technology,” said Breitenbach.

Breitenbach challenged growers to ask “What nonchemical weed control options am I going to implement?”

He said we have become chemical-dependent and it may help to look at robust crop rotations and cultivation.

One practice producers have gotten away from is spring tillage.

“Spring tillage is a weed control operation,” said Hoverstad. “Talk to organic growers. Very few plant in early spring. They rely on cultivating to take out the weeds.”

Spring tillage and later bean planting can help manage weeds, especially early emerging weeds.

John Frey, a Blue Earth County corn and soybean farmer, planned to take the researchers’ advice to increase spring tillage and apply a pre-emergence herbicide.

Enlist Duo The field day included a trial of the new Enlist corn technology from Dow AgroSciences. Sponsored by Dow, the trial followed the company’s protocol.

Enlist Duo is a blend of 2, 4-D and glyphosate intended for use on Dow’s Enlist genetically engineered corn. It was approved to manage resistant weeds by the Environmental Protection Agency in October 2014.

Gunsolus said the pattern in herbicides from 1990 to 2010 was that each new technology got used and used big, which has led to weed resistance. Between the EPA and the public sector, there are lots of eyes on Enlist technology, he added.

After soybean planting, growers have three days to apply soil-based chemistry so they need to have a “game plan,” said Hoverstad.

In trials, Hoverstad also sprayed glyphosate when giant ragweed reached two, four, six or eight-inch heights. This was done with and without pre-emergence soil applications. The fields are an educational tool to view weed management effects, see how the treatments work, and learn how to use the treatments together.

Based on research, Extension scientists know that spraying weeds at three to four inches tall is the most effective time for weed control, said Jeff Gunsolus, Extension weed scientist.

“If you remove weeds from the crop at that size, it has less impact of diminishing crop yield,” he said. “It always maximizes crop yield and gets rid of the weeds.”

While giant ragweed is still manageable with glyphosate at the SROC site in Waseca, giant ragweed is resistant to glyphosate in Renville County, the Willmar area and pockets in southeast Minnesota.

“We’ve gotten comfortable using glyphosate and not much else,” said Hoverstad.

Agriculture practices Hoverstad also is testing 10-, 20- and 30-inch row spacing in soybeans. The 10-inch soybean rows may impede ragweed growth by providing a shaded crop canopy. Narrow-row soybeans also have a yield advantage.

Man, dog to canoe 100 miles of Boundary Waters

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer You can’t help but wonder about a guy planning to climb into a canoe with only his dog for company and embark on a 100-mile journey paddling across the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northeast Minnesota’s “Arrowhead” region.

You wonder even more when you learn this journey includes a whopping 50 portages and 47 lakes.

Bob Welsh is the man with the plan.

He’s 50, lives in Cedar, Minn., with his wife, Jan, and 16-year-old son, Tory. Welsh, an operations support unit manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, has a job that may make him more qualified than most for this tremendous journey, which begins Aug. 5 at Morgan Lake near Grand Marais and ends at Farm Lake near Ely.

Houston is a veteran canoe traveler with the Welsh family.

“He lies in the bottom of the canoe, he acts as ballast, he gets in where you tell him to, He knows what to do,” said Welsh. “In all of our Boundary Water trips we’ve always had a dog with us. They’re great company. And I think he’s extra insurance in keeping bears out of camp.

“I can technically call this a solo trip yet enjoy his company. He won’t talk back; he won’t laugh at me if I cry. Since we first started talking about this trip it was always me and Houston.”

Bucket list Welsh was about 14 when the idea of a solo trip in the BWCA started fermenting. His first taste of overnight camping was a frigid experience. It was January and he convinced his parents that he was going to trek out across the Kettle River in Pine County for a solo camping experience.

“It got 20 below zero that night,” he said. “I got pretty cold but stuck it out and trekked back to the house the next morning.”

Soon he got involved in Junior Naturalist and other related activities where he “took a shine to canoeing.”

However, when Bob was 16 his parents moved to Renville County where canoeing and nature activities are more limited. That interest rekindled when Welsh went to college at the University of Minnesota, Morris. That’s also where he met his wife, who was a novice — but soon very interested — canoeist.

Welsh: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m calling this my mid-life crisis vision questâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the Welsh family it was time for their second dog.

Houston and Tory have forged a strong relationship. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So over the past six years Tory and I have always had Houston with us on each of our Boy Scout trips into the Boundary Waters,â&#x20AC;? said Welsh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tory thinks itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really cool that his dog and his Dad are doing this together.â&#x20AC;?

In his late 20s, he and three others did an extended canoe trip into northwest Ontario. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For about a week in that territory we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see a soul. It was a complete wilderness experience,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Recently I turned 50 and that suddenly seemed like a wake-up call to my early desires of wanting to do a solo trip into the BWCA. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had been taking Boy Scouts into the Boundary Waters for several years. Part of my challenge to these young scouts was to do some hard treks. So I quickly realized that I better be able to walk the walk. I also realized now is the time. In essence, I told myself itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now or never.â&#x20AC;?

Welsh bounced the idea off his wife. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She was okay but somewhat tentative,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At one point she even suggested she would like to go, too. But then I was apprehensive, suggesting thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not exactly what my dream was. She suggested something shorter, like only four or five days.

I reconfirmed that this was something I had to do â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a solo expedition as I had first dreamed way back when I was a young teenager.â&#x20AC;?

Well, not exactly solo.

A Golden Lab named Dallas was a regular canoeing companion when the couple had done their earlier canoeing expedition. Dallas passed on, thus the entry of Houston about six years ago. Tory was 9 or 10 and the old adage â&#x20AC;&#x153;every dog should have a boyâ&#x20AC;? convinced

If weather ever does get to be an issue, he’ll hunker down in his tent and sleeping bag for a bit.

His bigger concern is rolling an ankle on a portage.

“That surface can be rocky, slippery, sometimes unpredictable,” he said.

“I’m being honest now when I say I’m feeling my mortality much more. That could be part of that turning age 50 syndrome. If that were to happen now I’ve got some gear at one end of the portage; some gear at the other end and here I am with a twisted ankle sitting in the middle of this portage.

So that’s my biggest issue. I am going to carry a satellite locator so if needed, I can press a button and call for help.”

This device also connects with his cell phone. And this gadgetry will permit Welsh to set up a blog so he can document what he is doing each day.

People can follow Welsh on his adven-

ture and check his progress daily.

He recently checked his daily journal from his trip into the Northwest Territory 20 years ago.

“It was really interesting to read through the emotional changes that were part of my life on that trip in the company of three other guys,” Welsh said. “I’m curious as to how my emotions will read on this adventure. I’m going to get lonesome. I’ll talk to my dog but he won’t care much what I’m saying. So my blog reports should be interesting.”

When doing a single-person portage it means just what it says. That person carries the canoe plus all the provisions needed — food and bedding. His canoe weighs about 40 pounds; his food pack will start out around 60 pounds and decline daily; the rest of his gear, another 40-50 pounds.

“I’ll carry the 40-50 pound pack and my canoe my first trip; then walk back and carry my kitchen pack the second trip,” he said.

pounds per trip will be his load. And Houston, too, will be doing two trips per portage. That’s upwards of 40 to 45 pounds that Welsh doesn’t have to carry. Of course Houston’s pack will lighten each day because he will be chowing down his grub as well.

“Houston knows this routine to a ‘T’,” he said. “I’ll fasten his pack on him first, then pat him on his butt and say ‘go.’ He’ll take off on that trail to the next water, then sit down and be waiting for me to take his pack off. He knows the drill and gets a lot of fun out of this each day.”

Well-traveled The first portion of his trek will have some well-traveled areas so people will be present. But when the trail loops up towards the Canadian border the trail is considerably more difficult so Welsh figures two or three days with no people.

But traveling and portaging the last five to six lakes will be busy with people.

Welsh carries matches and a very small white fuel stove as a backup in case it’s too wet to start a fire.

“I pride myself on always being able to kindle a fire.”

His tent is a light-weight nylon fourperson A-frame by Alpine Meadows.

Houston will likely sleep in the vestibule

of this tent. Welsh doesn’t give a second thought to the possibilities of other animals in the BWCA woods. His concern with bears is that if they are accustomed enough to people they may be persistent in getting to your food pack.

But Welsh has been traveling to the Boundary Waters since the mid-’90s and has yet to have a bear in camp.

He’s never been without a dog, either.

He’s been doing Scouting trips for five years now, generally over each Memorial Day weekend. This year there were 43 Boy Scouts from six troops. Nine people and four boats per group are BWCA rules, but Welsh had more with this year’s group so he proposed different maps requiring different skill levels.

“This played out real well,” he said.

“They separated themselves out so we didn’t have any problems with the rules.”

His reward is being able to tell Scouts that they accomplished something they will remember the rest of their lives.

Chances are good that Welsh will also remember his solo expedition for the rest of his life.

Grain Angles Managing market risks

The following market analysis is for the week ending July 10.

CORN — After the raucous ride in the market last week, corn fell early in the week, before recovering to surpass last December’s high before the release of the refreshed U.S. Department of Agriculture balance sheets on July 10.

In the lead-up to the monthly crop report, outside factors were also at work on commodity prices.

After Greece’s inability to make their $1.7 billion loan payment to the International Monetary Fund and their subsequent rejection of a proposed deal with the Eurozone, the situation is still unre- PHYLLIS NYSTROM solved as of this writing. European Union finance ministers will meet on July 12 to discuss a new proposal from Greece. It’s a toss-up on what the outcome will be.

Another outside issue for commodities was the stock market plunge in China. Its stock market plummeted over 35 percent in a month. Over 45 percent of the listed stocks halted trading despite the government’s stepping in and pumping money into brokerage houses to stifle the exodus. Up until the topple, China’s market was up 60 percent year-to-date on an increase in margin lending and the opening of mainland markets to new money. Once the market began to decline, it fed on itself as cash left the market.

New government policies were beginning to work as we headed home for the weekend and China’s stock market had recovered nearly 10 percent of the decline. The government essentially told “large shareholders” of stocks that they couldn’t sell those

The month of July has had an interesting start as cash and futures markets seem to be at times going in opposite directions. The uncertainty in these marketplaces seems to stem from the continuing struggle between supply and demand for both cattle and hogs.

Nothing seems more evident of the struggle between supply and demand as in the cattle market.

The number of cattle remains tight, however on the other hand, demand continues to be depressed.

This has the cash market and the futures market at odds.

Many believe that because of the JOE TEALE tight numbers prices should be on Broker the rise. The futures market has the Great Plains Commodity notion that demand has been Afton, Minn. shrinking for months and therefore takes a more defensive posture toward future prices. The recent collapse in the beef cutouts would suggest that for the time being the futures market is more an indicator than the cash market.

There is no doubt at this juncture that cattle numbers will continue to be as tight as expected. The problem will arise if beef demand does not increase substantially in the foreseeable future than live cattle prices will struggle to maintain current levels. The main problem behind that struggle to maintain current price levels is the competition with other sources of meat protein which are far less expensive per pound.

It appears that demand will be a major determining factor to future price direction in the months ahead, more so than the number of cattle available for slaughter. Producers should keep aware of the market conditions and protect inventories as needed.

In order to take advantage of these times we must understand and prepare ourselves.

No one can tell us what the markets are going to do, if history repeats itself some farmers will do nothing and wait for prices to hopefully go higher. Instead of doing nothing on the next rally, I thought it may be helpful to outline a couple tips to consider in developing risk KURT LENSING management strategies.

• Understand what basis, market carries, and spreads are telling you. Learn to “listen” to the market. Some examples: what is the historic data on basis in a short/or long crop year? Does the market show enough carry to pay for storing corn?

• Sell in increments, a very simplistic example: 25 percent before or during planting, 25 percent in the summer, 25 percent in fall/winter, and the last 25 percent before July Fourth, following harvest. Some marketing plans elect to sell bushels earlier if a pre-determined profit goal is triggered, avoid delaying a large majority of your crop sales late in the marketing year.

Rain in Corn Belt prompts heavy fund buying NYSTROM, from pg. 15 stocks for six months. The rebound in China’s market is supportive to the commodity sector as it keeps their demand on track.

There were reports this week that a corn boat had loaded in Brazil and was destined for the U.S. East Coast for mid-August delivery. While destinations can change, the math works, confirming the world has adequate corn supplies. Safras raised its 2015 corn production forecast for Brazil by 3.2 mmt to 85.6 mmt. Conab’s Brazilian corn production forecast is 81.8 million metric tons, up from 80.2 mmt previous and USDA’s 81.0 mmt projection. Weekly corn exports were a non-event with 21.1 million bushels for old crop and 5.9 million bushels for new crop.

We ended the week on a high note in response to the USDA July crop report. Revisions to the 201415 balance sheets included feed/residual up 50 million bushels, 25 million added to both ethanol and exports, and ending stocks falling 97 million to 1.779 billion bushels. The pre-report ending stocks estimate was 1.811 billion and last month stocks were 1.876 billion bushels.

The 2015-16 balance sheet saw planted acreage revised 300,000 acres lower to 88.9 million acres, yield was left unchanged at 166.8 bushels per acre (165.4 bu./acre estimated), production 100 million lower at 13.53 billion bushels (13.44 billion estimated). The feed/residual and export categories were each cut 25 million and ethanol was increased 25 million bushels. The 2015-16 ending stocks were pegged 172 million bushels lower than last month at 1.599 billion bushels (1.54 billion estimated).

National average farm prices for 2015-16 were increased 25 cents on each end to a range of $3.45$4.05 per bushel.

Hog numbers up; market sluggish TEALE, from pg. 15 recent sell-off in prices. Hog numbers appeared to tighten enough that packers had to be more aggressive in accumulating inventories in the early part of July. At the mid point of July, numbers appear to be increasing once again and the hog market is now looking a little sluggish.

Pork cutouts are struggling at current levels indicating demand for pork at higher prices is meeting some resistance. If hog numbers remain at current levels or increase slightly in the weeks ahead, it is likely one could expect further slippage in live prices.

A major component in the recent strength over the past few years in hog prices has been the export market. Because of the waiving world economies at present and the stronger U.S. dollar, the outlook for continued strength in the export market comes into question. Without a strong export market, this could weaken the outlook for hog prices into the future.

Producers are suggested to keep market conditions appraised at all times and protect inventories if required. ❖

World carryout numbers were friendly for both crop years. For 201415, stocks were 193.95 mmt versus 197.02 mmt previously; for 2015-16 stocks were 189.95 mmt compared to 195.19 mmt last month.

OUTLOOK: Hefty grower sales in the past week have satisfied demand. Basis levels have softened and until those sales are absorbed, basis levels may stagnate.

SOYBEANS — The surge in soybean prices came to a screeching halt as traders returned from the Fourth of July holiday weekend, only to find legs in the latter half of the week on the rallying cry of “rain, rain, go away.”

The pre-June 30 report low in November soybeans at $9.71 1⁄4 per bushel beckoned to prices leading up to the monthly crop report on July 10 after crop conditions were unchanged on the July 6 conditions report; but forecasts in the latter half of the week for more rain in the eastern Corn Belt prompted heavy fund buying to regain three days of losses in just one session. A bounce in China’s equity markets and firmer basis levels also contributed to the recovery.

Soybean conditions as of July 5 raised eyebrows when they held steady at 63 percent in the good-toexcellent category. Conditions are expected to be lower on the July 13 report. The 8 percent collapse in crude oil prices to begin the week also weighed on the soy complex.

A weaker Brazilian real versus the dollar contributed to the competitive edge to Brazilian soybeans. There were reports that Brazilian soybean processors have reduced their crush rate on narrowing refining margins.

On the positive side, as of July 5 there were still 3.2 million acres soybeans left to plant with 1.55 million of those acres located in Missouri. The USDA will resurvey soybean acres in Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri, but results won’t be seen until the Aug. 10 crop report.

Weekly export sales were nothing special, but at least old crop sales were not negative. Old crop sales totaled 1.5 million bushels and new crop sales were 7.4 million bushels. Sales for 2015-16 continue to lag well behind last year. We have total commitments of just 233.1 million bushels when last year we had 430.7 million bushels on the books. Trade chatter indicates that China has been buying fall time slots from South America, a time period bushels are usually sourced from the United States. We did see 376,000 metric tons of 2015-16 bean sales to

unknown announced this week, something we haven’t seen in a few weeks.

Soybeans rallied in post-July crop report trading, but were unable to entirely erase weekly losses. The 2014-15 balance sheet changes included crush and exports each raised 15 million bushels, seed up 1 million and residual showing a huge 44 million bushel increase to 82 million bushels (overestimated crop?). Ending stocks for 2014-15 fell 75 million bushels from the June 330 million bushel forecast to 255 million bushels this month when the trade was anticipating stocks of 287 million bushels.

The 2015-16 balance sheet saw planted acres revised a half million acres higher to 85.1 million acres. The yield for 2015-16 was unchanged at 46.0 bu./acre (45.0 bu./acre estimated). Keep in mind that three states will be resurveyed for the August crop report due to wet conditions and since 1996 the July bean yield has only been changed three times, lowering them each time.

Production for new crop was up 35 million bushels to 3.885 billion bushels when 3.776 billion was expected. Imports were revised 4 million bushels lower and crush was raised 10 million for a 50 million bushel reduction in ending stocks to 425 million bushels (370 million estimated). The 2015-16 average farm price was increased 25 cents to a range of $8.50-$10 per bushel.

Ending stocks on the world balance sheets were lower than expected for old crop and in line with estimates for new crop. Global ending stocks for 2014-15 were 81.68 mmt (82.93 estimated) and 2015-16 ending stocks at 91.8 mmt versus 91.89 mmt projected.

OUTLOOK: Fund selling, last week’s stabilizing crop conditions, concern about China’s economic growth, and a higher U.S. dollar were detrimental to prices; fund buying and additional rainfall were supportive. The trick is determining which will dominate. In general, the trade will be expecting soybean stocks to decline on the Aug. 10 crop report when excessive rains’ effect on planted acres and yield are taken into account.

The first upside target in November soybeans is last week’s high at $10.40 with first support at $9.78 3⁄4 per bushel. August soybeans were down 6 1⁄4 cents this week at $10.32 and November soybeans were down 8 cents at $10.22 1⁄4 per bushel. June National Oilseed Processors Association crush numbers will be released on July 15. Look for increased volatility as we move forward through the summer. ❖

The cash dairy market had a hard time making up its mind this week as traders awaited Friday’s WASDE. Cheese prices, which had shown some weakness as product, particularly barrel cheese, flowed to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. But, prices strengthened and the block Cheddar closed the week at $1.7250 per pound, up 10.5 cents, but still 24.5 cents below a year ago.

The Cheddar barrels closed at $1.66, up 7.75 cents on the week but 32.75 cents below a year ago, and 6.5 cents below the blocks. Seven cars of block and 12 of barrel traded hands on the week. The lagging National Dairy

Products Sales Reportsurveyed U.S. average block price slipped 0.6 cent, to $1.7466 per pound, and the barrels averaged $1.7058, down 2.3 cents.

■ Favorable weather is continuing to aid cow comfort and crops through most of the Midwest, according to Dairy Market News. Dairy manufacturers are experiencing some seasonal declines in milk intakes and in milk components. However, milk is still readily available for cheese production.

Consumer demand remains steady for most varieties of cheese.

Western manufacturers suggest that although export cheese sales have dropped a little this year, strong domestic demand has helped make up the difference. Cheese production has

remained strong in the region, with milk readily available.

Butter lost some ground the week of July 6, closing Friday at $1.92 per pound, down 2 cents on the week and 45.25 cents below a year ago. Only two cars traded hands on the week. NDPSR butter averaged $1.9294, up 2.6 cents.

Butter sales to retailers have started to increase for some manufacturers, reports Dairy Market News. Cream supplies tightened as processors started up after the holiday weekend.

Some butter makers are buying cream from the West. Western butter output has slowed as some manufacturers are willing to sell cream and milk. The seasonal increase of ice cream production has pulled cream from butter making, while milk is being diverted to keep cheese production full, according to Dairy Market News.

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 79.5 cents per pound, down 3.75 cents on the week, 94 cents below a year ago, likely the lowest level ever, and would be a half-cent below the government support price if the Support program was still in effect. Eleven cars traded hands this week at the CME.

NDPSR powder averaged 87.70 cents per pound, down 3.4 cents. Dry whey averaged 40.90 cents per pound, down 0.4 cent.

■ The Dairy and Food Market Analyst’s Jerry Dryer stated in Friday’s DairyLine that there are a number of things going on that are “out of character.” The butter price has been running relatively high, despite some slippage, he said, while powder has been rock bottom.

“The Class III cheese price has been relatively high, zigging and zagging, but higher than most people expected.

The whey price has been very low and crashing. The spread between U.S. cheese and European cheese is huge and yet not much product is coming into the United States. There’s a large spread between U.S. butter and butter around the world and yet there’s very little fat coming into the United States.

“Can these kinds of things persist,” he asked. “I don’t know and the market is trying to figure some of that out.”

Cottonseed supply down; prices to spike in fall Keeping an eye on the feed side of the equation, the latest Crop Progress report shows 14 percent of the corn crop is in excellent condition, unchanged from the week before but compares to 21 percent a year ago.

Fifty-five percent is rated good, up one percent from the previous week and one percent ahead of 2014.

Eleven percent of the soybean crop is rated excellent and compares to 15 percent a year ago. Fifty-two percent is rated good, unchanged from a week ago but down five percent from a year ago.

Cotton is rated excellent on 11 percent of the crop, but two percent below a year ago. Forty-six percent is rated good, unchanged from the previous week but four percent ahead of a year ago.

Cotton Incorporated warned in a press release last week that cottonseed production is projected to be down resulting in strong prices this fall. USDA issued its Crop Acreage report last Tuesday and CI’s Tom Wedegaertner reported in last Friday’s DairyLine that it painted an even bleaker picture.

He said the United States has the lowest cotton acreage in 30 years so the cottonseed supply will be

greatly reduced, plus weather is raising more concern, with drought in California and excess rain in Texas, where most of the cotton is grown. “That has made the crop mature much later so we will have to watch the weather closely this fall and make sure we get this crop harvested without frost, etc.”

Plentiful global cotton supplies have also put market prices below the cost of production so growers are committing to fewer acres of cotton, Wedegaertner said. “There’s a lot of cotton on the planet and we’re just not making clothes, the textile industry is not using that cotton fast enough so the price of cotton is low.”

He advised dairy producers to purchase their cottonseed needs rather soon as the transition period between old crop and new crop this fall is “going to be kinda crazy” and “old crop prices will probably be spiking, waiting for that new crop to come in.”

■ FC Stone dairy broker Dave Kurzawski wrote in his July 8 Early Morning Update that the trade “continues to acknowledge bearish external factors as well as a domestic picture that has seen a healthy dose of physical cheese being brought to the exchange reinforcing the reality that inventory has swelled in recent months despite current milk production drop offs due to weather post flush.”

He stated that “A bearish shadow continues to hang over the entire complex and without some external catalyst the bull will likely continue to slumber. At face value, it has been widely broadcast that the Russian dairy ban, the abolition of EU quotas, the absence of Chinese purchases, as well as a strong greenback have all emboldened the bear camp and until a fundamental shift takes place and these dynamics will continue to dominate price action.”

He adds that Brazil and Russia are on the verge of a trade agreement that would allow Brazilian dairy into Russia and Russian wheat into Brazil.

Change up your garden with eye-catching plantings Adding interesting features to your flower garden is a way to change the scenery from year to year to create a fresh look. Visiting gardens is a favorite pastime and I am always surprised by the creativity displayed by novice as well as experienced gardeners.

One year when Larry put up a fence behind one of our new gardens I found a way to make it inviting

by creating a “flower fountain” using a wall pocket planter. Purple petunias, yellow pansies and marigolds make a pleasing color combination and with the addition of some variegated Vinca vines it seemed to cascade into a half circle of retaining wall blocks stacked on the ground. Adding a sun face at the top completed the look and made the new fence a backdrop for the flower fountain garden feature.

Readers ask: What are these black hairy worms with blue stripes on their sides that are all over in my yard this year?

The forest tent caterpillar is likely what you are describing.

(We used to call them army IN THE GARDEN worms.) Information from the University of Minnesota Extension says these caterpilBy Sharon Quale lars have outbreaks every 10 to 16 years that last for about four years before subsiding.

By mid-July the worms should be pupating in their silky cocoons. A few weeks later a yellowish-brown moth emerges and lays eggs which overwinter. Forest tent caterpillars are considered more of a nuisance than a serious pest on trees and shrubs. Defoliation is usually not harmful to mature trees because they can replace the lost leaves.

My big basswood trees in the back yard were ragged-looking from all the caterpillars munching on them but now have started to grow some new leaves.

Control of these pests can be done without the use of insecticides. Remove and destroy the egg masses and webs in early spring and remove the cocoons in early summer. In times of heavy infestation chemical treatments can be used on fruit trees and small ornamental shrubs. Most large deciduous trees will recover after the caterpillars quit feeding on them.

Meet the people, cows behind great dairy recipes Cookbook Corner

By SARAH JOHNSON The Land Correspondent Was I ever excited to receive a review copy of “The Dairy Good Cookbook.”

Readers of this column may have noticed a slight tendency toward cheese, butter, cream sauce, ice cream, half-and-half, heavy cream, smoothies and shakes. All I can say to that is: Yummers. Dairy is my favorite category in the food pyramid. I’m eating a big bowl of extra-creamy macand-cheese right now as I type this masterpiece. Coincidence? I think not.

So imagine my glee in getting my cheesy mitts on this sure-to-be-a-classic cookbook featuring real dairy families and actual cows getting together to produce wonderful goodies which are actually eaten by real people.

pizza dough Flour, as needed 3⁄4 cup chopped red, green, yellow or orange bell pepper 2 green onions, sliced 1/3 cup sliced black olives Preheat the oven to 300 F. Spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray; set aside. Combine the cheese in a large bowl; set aside.

Whisk the eggs with salt and black pepper in a medium bowl. Spray a medium nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the eggs into the skillet and cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until firm but still creamy, three to five minutes.

Roll out the dough on a floured surface to a 12-by-8-inch rectangle, about 1/8 inch thick. Scatter the cheeses evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving a 1⁄2-inch border around all edges. Spread the scrambled eggs evenly on top of the cheese. Scatter the bell pepper, green onions and black olives over the eggs.

Roll up the dough very tight from one long side. Brush water along the edge of the dough and pinch tightly to seal. Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the roll into 12 pieces, about one inch wide. Place the pieces, cut side up, in the prepared muffin cups.

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown. Cool the rolls in the pan on a wire rack for five minutes. Remove from the pan and cool on a rack for 5 minutes more before serving.

■ You can use canned salmon for the next recipe — but it could also be a

great use for leftover salmon from last night’s dinner. This simple recipe, basically just onions and potatoes and milk and fish with minimal seasoning and a lot of butter, works well with other types of firm fish and seafood, too (try clams, oysters, shrimp or crab).

Pearline’s Salmon Stew 4 tablespoons butter 1 large sweet onion, chopped 5 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cubed 2 (14.5-ounce) cans salmon, drained, liquid reserved OR 1 1⁄2 cups cooked salmon 6 cups milk 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Fresh snipped chives and oyster crackers (optional) Melt the butter in a stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, four to five minutes. Add the potatoes and just enough water to cover, about 3 cups.

Bring to a boil. Lower the heat and cook, covered, until the potatoes are tender, 10-15 minutes.

While the potatoes are cooking, transfer the salmon to a plate and remove any skin or bones. Rinse the salmon and, if necessary, break it into large chunks. When the potatoes are cooked, add the salmon, the reserved liquid from the canned salmon (if using), the milk, and the salt and pepper. Heat on low, stirring occasionally, until the soup is heated through. Garnish with chives and oyster crackers.

■ These sweet-and-spicy cookies are sure to win the hearts of nut lovers.

Fragrant with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, they get an extra zing from black pepper, an unusual ingredient in a cookie. Give yourself time to let the dough rest for an hour.

COOKBOOK, from pg. 22 Beat the butter and powdered sugar in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract. Beat until combined.

Sift the flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, pepper and salt together.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter-and-sugar mixture, beating and scraping down the sides of the bowl once or twice as necessary. Add the walnuts and mix on low speed just until combined. Cover and chill the dough until it is firm but still pliable, about an hour.

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Scoop out walnut-sized pieces of the dough. Roll them into balls and place on a large nonstick baking sheet. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the bottoms of the cookies are lightly golden. (The tops will be set but still fairly pale.) Immediately coat each warm cookie with sifted powder sugar. Transfer the coated cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Right before serving, reroll the cookies in additional powdered sugar.

■ Skip the tortilla chips and use chicken fingers as the base of your “nachos” with the next recipe, topped with an adventurous assortment of crispy pickles, peppers and tomatoes and drizzled with an easy homemade cheese sauce. This dish brings the party wherever it goes.

rand Entrance is at 1 p.m.,” announces emcee Murphy Thomas.

The raising of the flags to honor the veterans who have passed has just been completed. As the three American flags were raised the drum group thundered and sang and the people danced a circle around and around them. Young and old danced to honor the veterans and over head a troop of white pelicans sailed in their circle. They, like the people, felt the drums in their bones.

Summer, pow wow committee member Margaret Charwood said, is pow wow season for many people across Minnesota. The 12th annual Waa Wiye Gaa Maag (Round Lake) Traditional Pow Wow was held at S Lake on the Leech Lake Reservation June 19-21.

“Our communities at Leech Lake have pow wows all summer,” said Charwood. “They start with the Memorial Day Pow Wow in Cass Lake and end with the Sugar Point Pow Wow on Sept. 18th.”

“I’ve been dancing since I was five years old,” said Julia Pacheco, who recently graduated from Cass LakeBena High School with honors. “My family goes to a pow wow every weekend.”

Pacheco received her intricate and colorful regalia from her mother as a graduation gift.

“We worked on it together for three months and than she gave it to me,”

she said.

“We don’t call them costumes,” Charwood said. “They are regalia.”

As people register to dance in the Grand Entrance and Murphy Thomas reminds them to gather at the arena, the soft sound of human voices joins with the growing tingle of jingle dresses as people come together.

“The jingle dress came to a man in a dream,” Pacheco explained.

“In those days women could not dance but this man had a very sick daughter. He had a dream that the women wore jingle dresses and danced to heal his daughter. That is what happened and now the women dance that way.”

“We need another volunteer to carry the Leech Lake staff,” Thomas announced.

The people have gathered in all colors of the rainbow at the east entrance and there is jingling, smiles, and seriousness. The pelicans turn over head. The drum waits in the arena.

“OK, we have a volunteer,” Thomas said.

And the drum thunders and the singers sing and in come the people.

The grass dancers. Jingle dancers.

Shawl dancers. And many others.

“I am happy we can celebrate our culture,” Pacheco said. “Not so long ago we couldn’t.”
