Letter: Farmers must work together To the Editor: If you live in the upper Midwest you have probably heard that there is a huge crop being harvested. But the headlines do not tell the whole story. Yes, I will admit that physically there will be a big crop, but it is not in the bin yet.

The farmers have done a good job, as they always do — they purchased the right inputs, applied them at the right time, at the proper rates. God did his part as well; most of the Midwest had sunshine and rain at the right time in a healthy balance for crop development.

There are many reasons why a person farms, perhaps they are born into it, they may like to be outside, they do not like time clocks, etc. Certainly among the reasons that people farm would be to make a living, to feed and provide for their loved ones.

That is where the crop failure part comes into play.

After making scheduled payments, and paying for

crop input costs, most farmers will not have money left to provide family living expense.

The bushels will be there, but the dollars will not.

To a large extent, this is due to farmer’s lack of discipline in marketing and their failure to work together.

Many businesses know their cost of production and they know what they want for profit. When they market their goods and services they know what price level they need to attain this, this price is paid before the goods or services change hands. Too often farmers go to the marketplace and say “what will you give me?” Obviously that will not work this year.

If farmers would work together and use collective bargaining they could make this a bumper crop. God has done His part; will farmers work together to finish the job as breadwinners for their families?

To the Editor: I see that a recent letter-writer is upset that the Pollution Control Citizens’ Board was disbanded. I, too, am pretty upset about it. But the blame needs to go where it belongs. DFL State Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk is the reason we no longer have a Citizens’ Board.

If you will remember, we didn’t get the minimum wage raised until Sen. Bakk got his office building. And it’s

been downhill since then. Gov. Dayton has expressed several times that Bakk was working against him. At the end of the legislative session, Bakk sold out the DFL party on several issues. One was the Citizens’ Board.

What really upsets me is that Sen. Bakk has not been removed from his leadership position.

Even as this bigger picture shows no blue sky for our red ink problems, our red and blue politicians still see today’s budget problems as red and blue. Even worse, most see the solutions as red and blue, too: deep cuts to major programs or big additions to government debt.

What would, say, a 10 percent cut in today’s federal farm programs, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security mean to the overall well-being of rural America? It would sting. A lot.

For example, a 10 percent cut in key federal programs to South Dakota, a largely rural and largely red state, would mean its 165,499 Social Security recipients would receive $192 million less each month — or $2.3 billion less per year — while its 60,000 or so farmers and landowners would see their annual farm program benefits cut by $61 million.

Also, the state’s 143,771 Medicare recipients and its already-stretched-thin rural health care network would face $100 million in cuts to its nearly $1 billion cost each year and another $80 million cut in annual Medicaid spending.

Add ’em up and even this small cut to these four federal programs would slice about $2.5 billion a year out of South Dakota’s rural economy. Would any politician in really red South Dakota — or deeply blue Illinois for that matter — vote to make deep cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or farm programs?

Of course not, but it’s not just for lack of guts. The bigger cause is that their constituents — you, me, red, blue, and every color in between — would vote ’em out if they did cut programs that more and more rural Americans depend on. As such, we inherently know these complex problems have no simple answers.

So why do we listen to politicians who yell “Red!” or “Blue!” when we know the answers are not black and white?

Because we’ve met the reductionists and they are us. Until we recognize that in ourselves and change, don’t expect our representatives to change.

Production levels key to lamb profits

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer Philip Berg, lamb and wool management instructor at Minnesota West Community and Technical College, was raised on a Pipestone, Minn.-area sheep farm and continues to work with his familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sheep operation.

The college is known for The Pipestone Lamb and Wool Management Program, an education and consulting program. This sheep management system is based on achieving optimum production of a quality product with maximum profit being more important than maximum production. The system is based on low-cost feed ingredients, efficient labor use, low input costs, high production levels and intensive management.

Berg has boiled down flock performance to this basic mathematical criteria: If your goal is to generate a $40 per ewe return to labor and management, and your anticipated market price on a 130-pound lamb is $150 per hundredweight, these benchmarks need to happen: â&#x20AC;˘ Ewe conception rate should be 95 percent or better. â&#x20AC;˘ Lambing percentage (both marketed and retained) should be 142 percent or better. â&#x20AC;˘ Pounds of lamb marketed per ewe should be 185 pounds or better. â&#x20AC;˘ Feed efficiency should be 3.2-to-one or better. â&#x20AC;˘ Feed cost per ewe should be no more than $70. â&#x20AC;˘ Direct expenses plus depreciation should be no more than $100.

Ewe production level is the key (pounds of lamb marketed per ewe). Producers can manage more production through genetic selection, nutrition and management. Increasing production levels will generate more revenue with similar input costs. Market price is also important, but sheep producers have much less control over market price. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Labor can be a big item,â&#x20AC;? said Berg. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Devise both feeding systems and lambing schedules that minimize labor. Ask questions and keep seeking information.â&#x20AC;?

Diverse industry The Minnesota sheep industry is diverse. The wool industry focuses on hand spinners and weavers. The industry also includes club lamb or the show industry for both young and older producers and commercial feeders with market lambs as their primary revenue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the sheep business today is interesting and dynamic,â&#x20AC;? Berg said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of good reasons to raise sheep. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a diverse industry. Right now

The industry may be a good opportunity for young people, with growth in fiber and wool, show and commercial meat production. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They (young people) come in without any baggage, without any traditions, which sometimes is very beneficial for them as they work their way forward,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Also this is an age group that is not scared to work but they definitely want to feel certain that what they are doing is making them some money.

In crop farming, the trend continues to be bigger and fewer but not so in the sheep industry. Berg pointed out that about 95 percent of people with sheep have flocks of 20 ewes or less. That segment will prevail for a long period, said Berg.

Current information suggests there are few large lamb feeding operations. Percent lamb crop is one of the key factors in profitability. Percent lamb crop is the number of quality lambs marketed per breeding ewes. For most producers, a 200-percent lamb crop is realistic. Some operations are routinely doing better. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing that in both big and small operations,â&#x20AC;? said Berg. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Good records, good management, and time on the job are how these things happen. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a quick-fix industry.â&#x20AC;?

He sees the sheep industry continuing as a viable part of Minnesota ag business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right now thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of economics to understand before jumping in,â&#x20AC;? he said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an excellent place for young people to get involved in agriculture.â&#x20AC;?

The Froemmings Garfield, Minn.

The end of harvest is almost here for Rodney Froemming. When The Land spoke with Froemming on Oct. 22, he reported, “We got about 25 acres left (of corn).” Soybean harvest went well. “Overall we had a little over 50 (bushels per acre) average.” The harvest went smoothly with “no delays at all.” Froemming is

also finishing up some custom corn harvest today as well. “We do quite a bit of custom work,” he said. The custom work Froemming does is “not as much corn but a lot of beans.” Froemming’s average corn harvest start date for the past 40 years is Oct. 21 so he’s definitely ahead of the game this harvest. “It’s probably one of the best falls I’ve had.” As for how the harvest is going: “Excellent. I don’t think there’s anybody in this area that would disagree.”

The Thorpes Canby, Minn.

Three hours was all that was left of the 2015 harvest for Nathan Thorpe when The Land spoke with him on Oct. 19. He was about to wrap up corn harvest. “It’s been very good; couldn’t ask for better harvest weather,” he said. As for the crop itself? “It’s an excellent corn crop; it’s a bin buster,” Thorpe said. It gets better. The corn was dry enough that it wouldn’t have to spend any time in the dryer. After he’s done combining corn,

he said, “We probably have two weeks of tillage ahead of us.” The harvest this year was ahead of schedule. “I think we’re two weeks ahead of normal,” he said. Harvest has been aided by Mother Nature — “It’s been beautiful weather.” With the harvest almost done, Thorpe is thrilled with the results. “The yields were the best we’ve ever had.” started on Sept. 28 and went 17 days straight.

Heuisinkveld “got corn all out and field work all done.” When The Land spoke with Heusinkveld on Oct. 18, he reported that corn harvest went well, with “above average yields.” They began Oct. 12 and wrapped up in just four days. “It was a good harvest,” Heusinkveld said. There’s been no rain which is helpful for harvest, but he would like a little moisture now. The wind, however, seems to be in

abundance on the Heusinkveld farm. “It’s been blowing nonstop.” There is some manure to haul and vaccinations for the cows yet to do on the dairy side. This fall has “kind of had the perfect weather.” With an early finish to harvest and good yields, this fall is shaping up to be a great one for Heusinkveld.

People are needed to haul grain, keep bins or corn dryers running and bale the corn stover until the snow flies.

There are livestock chores to do at home while people are in the field, and meals on wheels to be delivered to farmers who have already worked a 12or 13-hour day by 6 or 7 p.m. For farm families, fall tells the story of decisions made all growing season long.

For young children, fall is a season of great excitement as they see those combines do their thing. A 90-mile trip to my parents’ farm one October prompted a new game for our (then) very young children. Everyone was

Farm to School is win-win for children, farmers

By MARIE WOOD The Land Associate Editor CHASKA, Minn. — At Chaska West Middle School, Alisa Katane added a slice of watermelon and corn on the cob to her tray while Shane Wein chose a slice of watermelon and a spoon full of corn.

Sixth grader Blanca Meza chose baby carrots and sliced apples with her chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes and gravy.

“They’re good, healthy and I like them. I eat a lot,” said eighth grader Wein.

Good news for kids like Wein is the students can choose as many fruits and vegetables as they want, said Jan Young, site manager at Chaska West Middle School.

“The fruit is bigger, but I only got two things, because I don’t have enough space on my tray,” said Katane.

Fresh fruits and vegetables grown by Minnesota farmers are more abundant at Chaska West Middle School thanks to a $50,000 Farm to School grant from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture in 2015. New hot and cold wells now display locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Jan Young, site manager at Chaska West Middle School in Chaska, Minn., has seen kids choosing more fruits and vegetables.

“Our grant was used to redo this entire serving line,” said Roxanne Williams, Nutrition Services Manager for Eastern Carver County Schools.

In addition, the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota awarded the school with $8,500, as part of a commitment to help

schools meet the requirement for matching dollars, which brought the school’s price tag down to $41,500. The partnership is unique in that it brings farmers, health care and schools together.

“We recognize that kids spend a lot of time in school,” said Janelle Waldock, Director of the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. “What’s great about the farm to school program is that during these formative years, they learn to make choices that are healthy for them.”

Farm fresh As students go through the line, cold fresh fruits and veggies are offered first. A “Today’s Local Produce” sign identified carrots from Ed Fields and Son Farm; apples and corn from Sponsel’s Minnesota Harvest Apple Orchard in Jordan; cucumbers, peppers and acorn squash from Svihel Vegetable Farm in Foley; and cherry tomatoes from Akerberg Acres near Carver.

Darcy Akerberg of Akerberg Acres has been involved in Farm to School for about five years, first with the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage school district and now with Eastern Carver County Schools.

“I think it’s wonderful. It supports the local farmers and it gets our kids eating better in our schools,” said Akerberg.

She has even been a guest server.

“It’s rewarding to see the kids’ faces,” she said.

From September to early November, Akerberg Acres provides potatoes, winter squash, tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, cucumbers and apples to the school. Akerberg lets them know what’s available week to week and they order what matches the menu.

“It’s worked out so well. We just love doing it,” said Akerberg.

The kids are eating it up. Young, who is called the “awesome lunch lady” by a coworker, has seen an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables.

For instance, she served crinkle cut cucumbers. In a single lunch period, students gobbled up as many cucumbers as the school would normally go through in an entire multi-lunch-period day.

“Just having the display a little more attractive, being able to put more out there, more colors; It’s made a huge difference,” said Young. Chaska West Middle School serves 515 complete meals per day.

While parents and students were impressed by the new lunch line at back-to-school night, a table of eighth grade girls said they “hate school lunches” and bring their own in colorful insulated bags.

“In sixth grade, we all got it (school lunches). Then they went all healthy on us,” said Joce Lane.

Lane is right. In 2012-13, the U.S. Department of Agriculture implemented new standards for school meals, championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The guidelines call for daily fruits and vegetables, whole grain-rich foods, fat-free or low-fat milk, proper portions, reducing amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium. The guidelines were phased in over three years, starting with lunches.

For instance, Bix Produce Company, a major distributor throughout the Twin Cities, is a vendor for Eastern Carver County Schools. The company, known for a strong commitment to Minnesota growers, distributes local produce April through October.

“We want these dollars going to Minnesota farmers,” said Paul Hugunin, supervisor of the MDA marketing division.

Hugunin credits the Farm to School Leadership Team for helping make the program successful. The team includes the University of Minnesota Extension, Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota School Nutrition Association.

Grain Outlook Livestock Angles Harvest curbed Rapid movement corn rally continuing The following market analysis is for the week ending Oct. 23.

CORN — Traders returned from a heavy harvest weekend Monday to lower markets, only to rally at mid-week before setting back once again as it followed soybean’s footsteps and the U.S. dollar surged higher.

For the week, December corn finished three cents higher at $3.79 3⁄4 per bushel. The July contract was down 1⁄4 cent to settle at $3.99 per bushel. Fund selling, harvest considerations and a rallying U.S. dollar limited upside potential this week, but a lack of actual farmer sell- PHYLLIS NYSTROM CHS Hedging Inc. ing narrowed the spreads, St. Paul firmed the basis and allowed for the mixed weekly closes.

The lack of export demand is being countered by domestic end users lack of coverage. Corn from the upper Midwest pencils, or is close to penciling depending on freight costs, into the eastern Corn Belt, which is what the market should be reflecting.

Our corn exports continue to struggle with only 9.8 million bushels this week, a marketing year low.

Total export commitments are down 35 percent from last year and the second lowest for this time of year in the last 13 years. Sales need to average 31.6 million bushels per week to make the USDA’s target. The USDA is projecting less than a one percent decline in exports year on year to 1.85 billion bushels. Many will be looking for a cut in the export category on the November U.S. Department of Agriculture report.

The only thing you can say about the livestock markets at this point in time is markets go up and they go down. However, most markets are not moving with the drastic daily moves that the livestock markets have in recent weeks. The likelihood of this type of rapid movement continuing is very likely in the days ahead.

The cattle market after making a rather severe drop during the month of September has now apparently found a low in the first few weeks of October. This movement in the cash and futures markets reflected the changes in the supply and demand for beef during the same JOE TEALE period.

Broker Great Plains Commodity Beef cuts made a major drop Afton, Minn. through September and demand for beef slowed because of the price of beef in relation to other competitive meats.

Also aiding in the weakness in the cash side were the heavy cattle that were producing much greater tonnage of beef for the market to absorb. When the beef cutouts reached a point that was more in line with pork and chicken prices, the buyers returned to accumulate more loads of beef. This return of demand and the still tighter supply of animals caused the packer to become more aggressive in purchasing live inventory. Thus the sharp rally off the lows made at the beginning of October.

The outlook for the battle between supply and demand for beef will likely continue as prices fluctuate in both the beef cutout and the cash price. In other words as prices go up the demand will shrink and as prices go down the demand for beef will go up.

Grain Angles Evaluating input costs With harvest winding up, your sights will move to next year’s crop and the opportunities that a new growing season brings. It is time to evaluate.

If you decreased the amount of fertilizer on your fields this year, was that a good decision? Did you get the yield you expected? If you decreased fertilizer, how will it impact your 2016 fertilizer plan?

Did you change seed corn varieties to a lesser cost alternative and did that decision result in a negative or positive in your bottom line?

These things need to be considered as you prepare for 2016.

As we move towards year-end, it will be decision time on whether you prepay for your inputs or hope they decrease in price through spring. Start the dialogue with your input suppliers now and get their thoughts on the trends in the inputs and their availability this fall compared to next spring.

The final major input cost, land cost, will need to be evaluated. Are you paying the same rent for lower quality land as you are for higher quality land?

A producer needs to look at the yield on each field and determine if his rent for that farm is in line with its overall profit potential. If you are not diligent on determining your breakeven on each farm, you may be subsiding a specific farm which impacts your total farm breakeven.

The supply of hogs seems to be expanding which has made the packers become more cautious in their price discovery. The fact that pork cutouts have also moved to much higher levels is also a concern as demand for pork is slowing signs of fading. From a seasonal standpoint, this time of year has in the past been a negative for hog prices and could have an adverse effect on hog prices.

Producers are urged to consider market conditions and protect inventories as warranted. ❖

It seems the opposite has been true for the hog market in comparison to the cattle market. The hog market has been rallying since August and it has now appeared to find a top during the middle of October.

Demand for pork has been very good which has allowed the packer to be fairly aggressive in accumu-

31 and must be harvested by May 5. In addition, the planting of two bean crops during the same growing season is prohibited. In 2014-15, 120,000 hectares were planted to a second crop of beans in the state. Growers may face a fine for infractions. Mato Grosso is the only state with these regulations, so far. Parana has already announced they will prohibit the planting of a second crop of safrinha crop beginning next year and other states are likely to follow. Mato Grosso’s bean planting was estimated at 20 percent complete as of Oct. 23 and Parana at 57 percent complete. Brazil’s overall bean planting was pegged at 20 percent complete vs. 30 percent on average.

OUTLOOK – Export demand is holding, domestic users would like more coverage, and growers would like a better flat price. This may set the soybean market up for a move higher as the bin doors slam shut, but it doesn’t have to happen immediately or be as big a rally as some would like. Longer term, if the projected South American production is realized, the world will have plenty of beans. Remember, the USDA is predicting a carryover of 425 million bushels this year in the United States, more than double the 2014-15 carryout. Beginning in November, the daily trading limit for soybeans will be 60 cents per bushel, down a dime from the current limit, meal will go to $20 per ton from $25 presently, and bean oil’s daily trading limit will be unchanged at two cents/pound.

Funds were net short 10,043 contracts of soybeans as of Oct. 20, according to the latest COT report. With first notice day in the November soybean contract at the end of October, we’ll turn our attention to the January contract. For the week, January soybeans closed down six cents at $8.96 per bushel. First support is $8.75 and resistance at $9.25 per bushel. ❖

As harvest moves into the last 15 percent, grower selling remains slow, basis levels firmed and spreads narrowed. Weekly export sales were impressive at 74.6 million bushels, a marketing year high. Our total sales to China now total 12.45 mmt versus 19.60 mmt last year at this time. U.S. export soybean sales need to average 17.1 million barrels per week to achieve the USDA’s forecast of 1.675 billion bushels.

China cut their interest rates by .25 basis points this week for the sixth time in less than a year. This comes on the heels of their third quarter Gross Domestic Product report that indicated 6.9 percent growth vs. their growth target of seven percent. They are trying to bolster their economy, which usually means a stronger demand for imports, i.e. our exports. The jump in the U.S. dollar, however, lent pressure to the soy complex and countered the higher interest rate. Comments from the European Central Bank president late in the week suggested they may institute more stimulus measures at their December meeting.

Turning our attention to South America, Argentina’s Oct. 25 presidential election will be watched closely. If the winning candidate cuts export taxes, we could see a pick up in Argentine farmer sales and more competitive offers out of that country.

If a run-off election is needed, it is expected to be held Nov. 22. Argentina’s bean planting has yet to begin.

Brazil started the impeachment process of their President early in the week. This may lend pressure to the Brazilian real in the short run; but if the impeachment is successful it could mean actual change for the country. The dry area in northern Brazil is forecast to receive needed rain to move on with soybean planting prior to the end of October.

AgRural reported Brazilian soybean planting at 20 percent complete at week’s end compared to 30 percent on average over the last five years.

Another thing to watch, rumors surfaced that China may investigate United States dumping dried distillers grains into their market. China imported 933,500 metric tons of DDGs in September with their year-to-date imports up 3.9 percent.

In its twice a year daily trading limit refresh, beginning Nov. 1, the new limit for corn is 25 cents per day, down from 30 cents. For Chicago and Kansas City wheat, daily limits will drop from 40 cents to 35 cents per bushel.

The cattle on feed report released Oct. 23 was termed neutral. Cattle on feed was 102.3 percent of last year vs. the 102.1 percent estimate, placed on feed was 95.9 percent vs. 95.4 percent forecasted and marketed at 97.6 percent compared to 97.5 percent projected.

OUTLOOK: December corn has been contained in the $3.60 to $4.00 range since Aug. 13. This week’s action was relatively flat as harvest entered what is likely the last big weekend of receipts. The weekly Commitment of Traders report as of Oct. 20 showed funds reversed their net long position to net short 26,693 contracts. Slow grower sales and limited commercial ownership prompted firmer basis numbers centered mainly in the eastern Corn Belt and narrowed the board spread. Harvest is expected to be entering the final quarter as of Oct. 26. If space is a problem, selling should perk up; but so far no forced sales are anticipated. The strong dollar and tail end of harvest will give us a slightly bearish tone in the very short term.

SOYBEANS — Soybeans traded higher and lower this week only to end up close to where they finished last week. November soybeans fell 2 3⁄4 cents for the week to close at $8.95 1⁄2 and the July contract dropped eight cents to $9.07 per bushel. Export interest was impressive for the week with sales totaling 916,000 mt to unknown and China

High butter, cheese stocks may be bearish for markets

Spot butter fell to $2.42 Wednesday but rallied Thursday and closed Friday at $2.47 per pound, up two cents on the week and 66 cents above a year ago when it dropped 19 cents to $1.81.

Eighteen cars traded hands this week at the CME. Butter is “rebelling against conven-

tional wisdom that prices must fall seasonally,” says FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski in his Oct. 20 Early Morning Update, but he credits America’s “fat demand renaissance” for the strength.

■ Checking the cupboard; cheese and butter stocks are well above year ago levels, according to USDA’s latest Cold

Storage report. The Sept. 30 butter inventory stood at 187.5 million pounds, down a healthy 24.7 million pounds or 12 percent from August, but are 35.1 million pounds or 23 percent above September 2014. It’s the largest monthly butter inventory since March.

American-type cheese, at 698.9 million pounds, was down 10.1 million pounds or one percent from August but 67.6 million pounds or 11 percent above a year ago. The total cheese inventory stood at 1.15 billion pounds, down 18 million pounds or two percent from August but 135.6 million pounds or 13 percent above last year.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski called the cheese data “bitter,” being “above our expectations and at all-time record levels for the month of September.”

HighGround Dairy’s Eric Meyer wrote: “We find the lack of significant drawdowns in any category somewhat surprising and casts a bearish shadow across both markets (butter and cheese).”

Revisions added 15 million pounds to the original August 23-state tally, now put at 16.3 billion pounds, up 0.9 percent from a year ago.

September cow numbers totaled 8.63 million head in the 50 states, unchanged from August but 41,000 more than a year ago. Output per cow averaged 1,805 pounds, down 86 pounds from August and 1 pound below September 2014. Minnesota was up 2.2 percent on a 35 pound gain per cow.

■ The USDA’s latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook raised its 2015-16 corn price forecast from last month to $3.50-$4.10 per bushel. The soybean meal price forecast was unchanged at $310-$350 per short ton. The alfalfa hay price fell from $169 to $159 per short ton from July to August.

his church has been through the mill. The people who built these churches were just incredible. They had the fortitude to keep going after it got blasted down twice.”

Lutheran Church, was expressing her admiration for people who lived long before she was born. She and Terry Johnson, who grew up in the congregation and has been its janitor for 34 years, were standing in the third building constructed by the members.

The first church building built in 1891 was destroyed in a March 1905 tornado. A second wooden structure erected that year was struck by lightning and burned in 1926. They responded in 1927 by erecting a brick building.

“It amazes me when I think that they were on their third building, and how much they put into this structure,” Johnson said.

“They didn’t spare anything.”

Sunlight filtering through huge colored glass windows on both sides of the cruciform-shaped sanctuary cast a brilliant light on the polished wooden pews. A colored glass window depicting Jesus kneeling in the Garden of Gethsemane graces the wall above the altar.

The interior was further beautified by the wood carving of Pastor Allen Erickson, who served in the 1970s. Four arches with colors and carvings depicting seasons and holy days of the church year are in the front of the sanctuary. On either side of the altar, large carved wooden letters proclaim, “Praise Ye The Lord.”

Originally named the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Louisburg, they have the expected lutefisk supper. Instead of the 700 they used to serve, it is now for the first 100 people to buy tickets, and usually there is a waiting list. (With such soughtafter tickets, scalping is possible but unlikely. Lutefisk eaters are not known to give up tickets at any price.)

Like many rural congregations, the oncefilled pews now offer spacious seating for worshippers, which these days average 25 per Sunday. But the members continue to be faithful to the Lord who brought the congregation through two disasters in its early history. And they worship in an uncommonly beautiful sanctuary for a back roads congregation. ❖
