Letter: Don’t criticize U.S. farmers with your mouth full

To the Editor: This is a response to the letter with the headline “Stop squealing about ag welfare” published in the Dec. 4 edition.

The letter writer’s vituperative remarks were a harangue by a person seemingly enamored by his own voice.

The letter writer did, however, neglect to mention at least a few things.

First, farmers are taxpayers too. We pay real estate taxes, income taxes, self-employment tax, and sales tax just like everyone else.

Second, taxpayer subsidies of airlines, car manufacturers and banks don’t seem to bother him; that’s the trouble with possessing such a vast amount of knowledge — it gets in the way of simple things — like common sense.

I hope the next time the letter writer complains about farmers — who feed the world — he will be gracious enough to not talk with his mouth full.

Guebert opens mail bag to criticism

over Hoover Dam.” Shortly thereafter an administrator was hired, “then an office building complete with a copper roof” was built, and the checkoff, through Congressional action, became “mandatory so even more money could be played with.”

The result? “…Per capita consumption of pork did not increase… margins tightened to lead to consolidation… China became the largest pork producer in the United States.”

“The lesson,” he concludes, is that “if you want something screwed up, get the government involved.”

OK, but someone invited the camel, government, into the checkoff tent and that someone was the NPPC. The invitation eventually paid a dividend — a fat, $60 million dividend — that NPPC then used to largely transform itself from a Midwestern hog grower group to a Capitol Hill political organization.

For every criticism or complaint received since June, many others arrive with praise. Some, like a late November e-mail from Tom in South Dakota, came with both.

By most personal and professional metrics, 2015 was one for the books. On the figurative side, since late May coauthor/daughter Mary Grace Foxwell and I have talked, read, and signed our way through nearly 70 events highlighting our book, “The Land of Milk and Uncle Honey,” from Bismarck, N.D., to New York City.

By Alan Guebert thousands of miles we traveled and the thousands of readers who gathered to listen, chat, and ask questions about farming and food, only one mildly disparaging remark — aimed more at me than the book — was heard.

Not so with this weekly effort. Letters, telephone calls, and e-mails from Maryland to Montana arrived daily to comment and question, debate and deflate.

Twice a year these writers get their due, like Clarence from Illinois who began a September e-mail to me with, “You disappointed me, Alan.”

Clarence’s disappointment arose when, in noting the rise of corn and soybean production in his native North Dakota, I had “assume(d) that wheat production there was seriously declining.” In fact, “Hard red spring wheat was grown on nine million acres” in the state last year as its farmers continued to “diligently seek INCREASED diversification!”

Clarence did close on a sweeter note, however: “Don’t worry, I will continue to read your articles; and I’m sure you will try to be accurate with your facts.”

I’m sure.

Another e-mailer was more direct: “Regarding your July 10 article… you are slipping. A 15-paragraph column without mentioning your beloved Uncle Honey? You should be ashamed. Ask your priest for a proper penance.”

Slipping or not, I’m pretty sure we Lutherans remain priest-less.

An August e-mail from a Wisconsinite began with kudos on the book before offering a 1,000-word editorial on why I should limit any enthusiasm about “consumers (who) vote with their dollars…” because decades in the animal feed business had shown him that “…when given an option, the consumer doesn’t give a rip.”

That may be true of the fogey generation — his and mine. Younger generations, however, care deeply.

Twenty years ago organic food was for hippies; today it’s a $40 billion market that will grow by eight percent in 2016.

Another e-mailer wrote to comment on two columns that examined the checkoff’s $60 million purchase of the slogan “Pork. The Other White Meat” from the National Pork Producers Council.

The checkoff, he recalled, began when a group of mostly hog farmers “got together in Moline, Ill., to see if something could be done about” losing ground to “the Tysons of the world with broilers. That was the embryo of the NPPC.” All “committed to participate in collecting a voluntary checkoff” and, soon, “money poured in like water

Expected grain prices below breakeven prices

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer Local cash grain prices in southern Minnesota started 2015 at about $3.70-$3.80 per bushel for corn, and from $9.50-10 per bushel for soybeans.

Local cash prices dropped to near $3.30 per bushel for corn, and below $9 per bushel for soybeans by August of 2015. Regional cash grain prices are near $3.40-$3.50 per bushel for corn, and $8.00-$8.30 per

bushel for soybeans, as we end 2015.

New crop prices for the fall of 2016 at local grain markets are very close to the current cash prices for both corn and soybeans. Breakeven grain prices in southern Minnesota for the 2016 crop year, based on average crop yields, input costs, and land expense are expected to be near $4 per bushel for corn and over $9.50 per bushel for soybeans.

Theisse’s message tells farmers what they suspected all along.

Growing crops in 2016 looks to be an exercise in rust prevention. Virtually every acre in production in Kent Thiesse 2015 will likely be right back at it again in 2016. We’ll continue to have too much supply for world markets. And the pain continues.

There may be some reshuffling of corn acres to soybean acres because farmers are likely to lose less money growing soybeans.

Input costs may be slightly down. Fertilizer prices are lower: Nitrogen and potash prices are down 40 percent; phosphate average prices are down 30 percent. Charlie Head, agronomist for Western Consolidated Cooperative in Holloway, Minn., reports fertilizer prices are some of the lowest in 10 years.

Rents Do you have a ‘fair’ farm rental agreement? University of Minnesota Extension and educator David Bau wrapped up a statewide series of Fair Farmland Rental Agreement Workshops.

In Olivia, Minn., Bau presented a hypothetical 2016 corn/soybean budget. He estimated input expenses for seed, fertilizer, land cost, insurance, hired labor, fuel, and machinery. Next was projected yields for each crop. His next batch of arithmetic was breakeven prices. For corn, that figure was $4.57; for soybeans it was $10.94.

The elephant in this process continues to be land costs. Flexible agreements based on commodity prices and actual yields seem to be a starting point suggesting the importance of beginning with a base rate component of dollars per acre.

Bau urged landowners to pick an option and work through it with renters. He also encouraged both parties to do a written lease. He stressed the importance of covering your land with liability insurance in case an accident were to occur.

So what’s a fair rent? There is no fair rent that fits all parties. It’s a matter of sitting down and talking; getting figures on a piece of paper; negotiating on what those figures should be; checking with your farm management contact; then agreeing with a hand shake and a written contract. saw some potential and he pushed me. I owe him a lot of credit.”

She soon couldn’t be in the art room enough. As a senior, she won a Congressional Institute sponsored competition in her congressional district and had her work on display for a year in the U.S. Capitol.

Going for it When she went to South Dakota State University in Brookings, she had to choose between art education and ag education and chose art, but after a semester: “I decided I wanted a job when I graduated and the first things schools cut are art and ag.”

In 2010, she graduated with an advertising major, and marketing and sociology minors. Weber got a job at an area publishing company and did graphic design at a computer. It was a good job, but not satisfying to an art-loving farm girl. She painted whenever she found time.

While working on the painting of a newborn calf called “A New Beginning,” Weber posted progress photos on Facebook. The progress was followed by Amanda Radke, a writer, blogger and author she knew somewhat from college. Radke had written a children’s book called “Levi’s Lost Calf,” and needed an illustrator. They connected and Weber did 20

paintings for the book in less than a month while still holding her job.

“Art was always in the back of my mind, and I did it as a hobby,” she said, “but when I started posting some of my paintings on social media sites like Facebook, it skyrocketed.”

The exposure on social media and from illustrating Radke’s book led to a growing number of requests. In 2011, she decided to quit her job and make a career out of her art.

“Thank goodness for good in-laws,” Weber said.

She told them, “I don’t know if this is going to work, but I want to give it a shot. I don’t want to look back five years from now and wish I had done it earlier. I’m probably going to need some help, and I’m willing to work.”

She worked almost full-time on the farm for a year while building up her business. Now those roles have switched and she works full-time doing custom paintings while helping out on the farm when needed. She is also grateful to her parents, who have always backed her in her decisions.

Instead of telling her to play it safe, “they encouraged me, and told me if I think I can do this, I’d better work hard and see where it goes.”

Dream job It has gone extremely well. Weber’s work is almost exclusively on commission, doing custom paintings from photos. On average, she has 15-20 projects awaiting completion. If someone needs a painting for a special occasion, they need to plan ahead.

That’s old advice, but Michelle Weber is a new rural voice proclaiming it.

Weber’s dream was to find a way to build a life around her two inter- Michelle Weber ests — agriculture and art. She feels blessed that her real life has surpassed her dream.

Weber lives in the country and works with her husband, Jesse, raising Red Angus cattle, and at the same time has started her own business, Weber Custom Painting. Customers supply her with photos, which she uses to produce original oil paintings.

“The root of all my work is agriculture in general,” Weber said, “but cattle are what I specialize in.”

She has helped her husband and in-laws with raising cattle, and has seen the cycle from breeding to birth to their sale across a wide area of states. “(What I like about cattle) is probably the beauty of the natural life process. But then who doesn’t like the view of looking out and seeing a bunch of red cattle on green grass,” Weber said.

That is a view that Weber can enjoy as she works in her home studio near Lake Benton.

Growing up as a farm girl from Windom, she was an avid 4-H participant, so it is not surprising that she would like agriculture and marry a farm boy from Lake Benton. She met Jesse through college friends at the Minnesota Beef Expo.

The art element didn’t come so naturally. Her first art class was as a junior in high school.

“I hated that class, because I didn’t think I was good at it,” she said. “But my art teacher, Mark Nass,

Weber creates custom paintings from photos ARTIST, from pg. 7 painting she did for the family of Brent Beitelspacher, a young cattleman who died in a plane crash. She is still moved when she talks about it, feeling God was working through her hands, and through the whole project.

The request came on a weekend she had planned to be gone, but plans had changed and she was home to take the call. She had just purchased acrylic paints, which dry faster than the oils she normally works with, so working day and night she completed the painting in two days. Even the framer happened to have an assembled frame of the size and color she needed. The framed painting was delivered in time for the funeral.

“It was like God was working,” she said.

She thinks that doing commissions keeps her work fresh.

“I never know what’s going to be in my in-box,” she said. “People send me pictures that I wouldn’t have thought of painting, but they’re all special to someone. Upcoming paintings are a tractor pull, another memorial painting, cattle in a pasture — such a wide variety that it keeps me inspired and fresh. I’m always doing something different.”

There were times when she questioned if she could do what people were asking, but she always pushed through and challenged herself.

“I’m always up for a challenge. I never want to back down because that’s part of my job, too, always

“My dream was to work in art or ag,” Weber said. “but I’ve been able to tie them both together! I work out of my home, so when Jesse needs me on the ranch I’m right down the road. I truly have my dream job.”

It’s time to think about soybean seed purchases and variety selection. If you are like most, you’ve already spilled coffee on the seed catalog, thumbed through it, read which variety has the best yield, and learned how each company has the solution for everybody. The problem is; you are not everybody.

My approach is slightly different. First, make a list of the fields where you plan to plant soybeans next spring and list the issues with each field. Next ask yourself questions like these: • Will that southern stretch be planted first, last or somewhere in the middle?

• Did that western old field have iron deficiency chlorosis develop in the beans the last time it was planted?

• Didn’t that northern field have an aphid outbreak in the neighbor’s beans?

• Wasn’t there soybean cyst nematode in the eastern field last time we planted to soybeans?

Once you determine the problems, review the solutions (i.e. varieties) that will best help you manage those problems. Fourth, focus on yield potential between the varieties, and which varieties solve your multiple issues. Lastly, pick the varieties that provide the best solution to your problems.

Try to use honest, unbiased information, such as the University of Minnesota Variety trials, to make your decision. However, no one source has information on all varieties available.

Necessity requires the seed company to be the solution to common problems. They have a good product, but their publications are designed to service the many.

You have to determine your problems, and then find solutions. You don’t need to purchase a solution looking for a problem.

Soil safari captures soil health across country

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer A quick and convenient way to learn about the soils of America is to sit in on a power-point presentation

by John Heard who wears the title Farm Production Extension-Soil Fertility for Manitoba Farm Production Extension. Heard kicked off the John Heard Conservation Tillage Conference, Dec. 15-16 in Willmar, Minn.

He shared his obsession of hunting state and provincial soils. But his hunting weapon is a threefoot soil augur. Soils are pinpointed with local guides, dug out, photographed and released. In two years the safari has captured soils from 27 states and four provinces.

His day job currently is being Soils Extension Agent for the province of Manitoba. But his twoyear safari, capturing the many soil types across America revealed a tremendous variety of soils as one might expect based on the original source of these soils. For instance, Minnesota’s designated state soil is the Lester soil, predominant in the rolling terrain of south central Minnesota.

How does a soil become a state soil? In 1985 the Minnesota Association of Professional Soil Scientists voted to designate Lester as the state soil. No word as to how many other soils were considered by this group but online information says Lester got 37 percent of the votes cast and that was enough. It wasn’t until April 28, 2012, that Governor Mark

Lester soil was identified in 1939, in McLeod County, near Lester Prairie. According to the Minnesota Soil Scientist website, Lester has been mapped in 16 Minnesota counties. Described as welldrained and formed in loamy, calcareous glacial till, Lester is a dark, grayish brown loam surface with properties developed from both grassland and forest environments.

Iowa’s State Soil is the Tama, first identified in Black Hawk County in 1917. Today the Tama soil is found on more than 933,000 acres in 28 counties.

The top soil and subsoil are textures of silty clay loam and extremely productive. Tama soils are

formed in wind-blown, predominantly silt-size particles, known as loess and are more than 60 inches deep.

On the hunt Traveling across the United States hunting our soils, John Heard sees how soils are used and sometimes abused.

Heard says that without proper care we could be wearing our soils out with intensive row crop production in some parts of the country.

“In Manitoba we’ve seen a large adoption of corn and soybeans in recent years. We’ve got 1.3 million acres of soybeans just in our province now. And we’re noting that growing a warm season crop in a cool environment causes our growers to do more tillage,” said Heard.

“So as a result we are seeing some erosion issues.

But we are showing them how to grow soybeans in a reduced tillage system and that is catching on good.

We are fortunate. Our soils are still young enough so they are still quite resilient.”

Heard explained that in black dirt farming further south, the corrosive impact of soy crops is more evident.

University extensions preach minimum tillage and rotation systems, but Heard says that in his area, growers have too many crops so rotations are a challenge and so is tillage.

“In the area around where I work and live, a farmer can grow from 12 to 15 different crops.

Canola, flax, sunflowers, potatoes, soybeans, corn, dried beans, wheat and all the cereal crops so often there is no standard rotation,” he said.

Heard also grows sweet corn on his rural acreage.

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer OLIVIA, Minn. — Olivia Realtor Roger Heller has growing concerns about Minnesota’s escalating property taxes plus the state’s tax burdens in general are sending the wrong message to prospective farm land buyers. So he sent a letter to State Representative Tim Miller, R-Prinsburg.

Miller met with Heller at his office in November.

The tax discussion also prompted former Olivia insurance agent Bob Porath and auctioneer and farm realtor Gary Hotovec to sit in on the two hour meeting.

Property taxes aren’t likely to recede because federal and state aid is drying up so counties have no alternative other than to increase property taxes.

With the significant increases in farm land values bumps in real estate taxes seem inevitable in the minds of most legislators, said Miller.

“We have about $1.7 billion surplus in the state treasury right now. But if there was an effort to use that surplus on everything everyone is requesting it would balloon to $8 billion. It appears to me everyone is using the surplus as a reason to spend more money on just about everything,” Miller said.

“The bind for counties came with the shifting of state mandates to each county. Plus we have an aging population in rural Minnesota, coupled with a declining population.”

Heller countered that because of Minnesota’s high tax reputation capital is fleeing Minnesota.

“Land investors are heading to Iowa and South Dakota. Both states have more favorable property taxes,” Heller said. “Plus Minnesota has estate taxes, now indexed at $5 million. Some states, South Dakota for example, don’t have estate taxes.”

Miller was emphatic on one issue; there will be no new tax on gasoline. Minnesota House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, said the same at a recent Hutchinson conclave.

“Transportation will be a major issue when we reconvene next March. But we won’t be moving on a gas tax. The money is there. It will be that perennial issue of where should it go,” said Miller.

Heller said, “Our twin city politicians can’t keep building more light rail unless there is proportional spending in rural Minnesota.”

Miller responded that according to the Governor’s Highway Transportation Committee, Minnesota should be spending $20 billion on roads and bridges over the next 20 years. He indicated House studies say it is more like $8 to $10 billion.

“Call me, write me, e-mail me. Or just get to St. Paul when we’re in session. And I strongly encourage the voices for Minnesota agriculture to become more vocal. We’re being drowned too often by the voices of the non-ag people,” said Miller. “Speak up. We all have a say in how our state should function.”

Conservation tillage alters Midwest environment

By DICK HAGEN The Land Staff Writer WILLMAR, Minn. — The Conservation Tillage Conference, held Dec. 15-16 in Willmar, Minn., was an information-jammed session on issues, advances, technology, breakthroughs and new twists in rippers, coulters and applicators to get it all done.

About 210 people were in attendance.

The conference was a combined project of North Dakota State University Extension Service and University of Minnesota Extension Service. Speakers included farmers from North Dakota and Minnesota and specialists from Iowa State University, U of M, NDSU and University of Wisconsin.

Bruce Potter, insecticide and pesticide management specialist at the University of Minnesota’s Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton summarized the focus of the conference.

“Basically we’re looking at changing the environment, perhaps just a little, perhaps quite a lot depending upon differing situations. We’re modifying tillage systems across much of our Midwest landscape these days,” he said.

“That has an impact not only on the crops we grow but also on the weeds, insects, pathogens and visual strength of our landscape. These changes mean producers are going to have to do some things a bit differently.”

— Bruce Potter The squeeze across the farm belt may be driving some of these decisions. As farmers strive to reduce production costs in every conceivable and practical way even the cropping sequence may be altering.

Already the crunch on corn profits is generating talk on less corn and more soybeans for 2016.

“There’s more interest in soybeans, less interest in corn — especially going away from the corn on corn agenda that has been the popular play with many,” Potter said. “I think that will be good for both crops.

It gives producers a bit more hedge on money management. Because of significant reductions in production costs per acre for soybeans, risk management is lessened in the marketing procedures.

“However I think we will need some modifications in how we grow soybeans and pay more attention to rotations because of soybean cyst nematode problems. Watching how often we put soybeans into the rotation becomes more of a challenge.”

Are cover crops part of this new landscape?

Potter recognizes value in the role of cover crops but the questions of how do you get them established and how do you take them out persists with most farmers. At the Lamberton station, scientists are investigating the connection between cover crops and insects.

“At the Station we’re taking a closer look at how cover crops interact with insects. We’re seeing some evidence of black cutworms and army worms coming into these cover crop fields,” Potter said. “So it potentially means some thinking on how to adapt our insect and disease management strategies to take care of them.”

Soil health Potter noted growing interest within the soil health industry of developing certain biological organisms be that specialized fungi or bacteria. He cautioned that because these are biological organisms they react to the environment much like the crop and insect react.

“And that is why it’s a bit more difficult to get consistent results from some of these new products we’ve engineered. Biologicals like certain temperatures, certain moisture regimes and because they are interacting with another living organism there has to be a good fit,” Potter said.

Estimates vary, but there are more microbes in one gram of soil than people on the earth. And many of those billions of organisms are in some way affecting the plants with which they come into contact.

“They all interact with the plant in some way.

We’re looking at utilizing what nature gave us, identifying and singling out the microbes that have a benefit on certain crops in certain conditions. There are billions of opportunities,” said Colin Bletsky, Novozymes vice president, in a recent SeedWorld article.

Though not a tillage specialist, Potter is cognizant that as climate changes minimum tillage is likely to develop as a means to conserve moisture, improve soil health and rebuild organic matter content. He suggested warming temperatures will make reduced tillage easier because you’re not having to deal with colder soils and the potential of slower crop emergence.

Following a near ideal cropping season across much of Minnesota in 2015, with record yields of corn and soybeans as ample proof, have precipitation patterns been good enough to recharge soil moisture in Minnesota?

Speaking for the Lamberton area, Potter thinks soil moistures have mostly recharged even though tile lines are moving little or no water as of early December.

“We’re in good shape moisture-wise but it would be okay to get some cold weather to knock back some of these pathogens. I think they’re mostly still in Missouri or Iowa right now but that will change. What we don’t want is a wet spring,” Potter said. “This past spring we got off to a good start because cold, wet soils weren’t an issue. Plus we had good moisture all summer and plenty of mineralization in our soils was providing good N release.”

Use caution Potter also talked about the challenges facing farmers. For instance, some farmers have looked to planting non-genetically modified organisms seed, but that can come with new challenges.

Potter suggested the GMO advent was the easy button.

“On one side we’ve lost some of the efficacy for western corn rootworm so we could get into a low spot for European corn borer issues. So a shift back into non-GMO seed could trigger a rebirth of corn borer populations. Growers will have to do some scouting. They recognize that corn borers are easily controlled with an insecticide application if needed,” he said.

“Cutting costs is a high priority item for producers.

But I caution producers to not abandon corn rootworm and corn borer control without knowing what’s in your fields. Also cutting fertilizer when you need it isn’t good strategy.”

What you desire needs to be worth what it’ll take to get there. It needs to profoundly matter to you and those you love. What you want has to be important enough to take action that pushes through obstacles and perseveres through storms. Here’s the reality. No one drifts into strong endings or meanders their way into finishing well.

But let’s be honest. We don’t always feel like working hard. Sometimes we’re tired, sick of the task at hand or life in general, or are distracted by a thousand little things that keep us from the main thing. There’s nothing like the beginning of a new year or when death feels a layer closer in a hospital waiting room, the scene of an accident, or someone else’s funeral to bring clarity to what matters most.

Today is one of those days. We’ve been gifted a new day to make a slight shift or an about face to the end of our story with the choices we make today.

In the book, “21 Great Leaders: Learn Their Lessons, Improve Your Influence,” Pat Williams ask two questions: What is your dream? What is your vision for the future? Larry and I have been ardent conifer connoisseurs for over 15 years now and we add to our collection with new specimens every year.

Cookbook celebrates Minnesota farmers markets Cookbook Corner

Thanks to your healthy eating habits, as well as your delight in eating locally produced food, the number of farmers markets in the state has tripled in the last decade, from 45 in 2002 to more than 150 today.

Grill up a Lamb Kebab marinaded in garlic, lemon erator one hour to overnight.

If you use wooden skewers, soak in water half an hour beforehand. Thread cubes of meat onto skewers, alternating with onion and lemon wedges.

Push the pieces tightly together on the skewers.

Light charcoal grill and wait for coals to ash over, or heat gas grill on high for 10 minutes. Grill skewers, turning once, for 10-15 minutes, until they reach an internal temperature of 135 degrees. Remove from grill, tent loosely, and let rest 10 minutes.

Livestock Angles Marketing year in review The year of 2015 was a very interesting and at times very volatile in the price movement in livestock.

The year will end with livestock prices lower in all categories including live prices and wholesale prices. The only area that didn’t see lower prices were the retail prices which were either steady to slightly lower or higher than a year ago. This in the face tight supplies of live inventory in some instances and over abundance in other instances throughout the year.

As for the cattle market, this year has been nothing more than a battle of tight supplies of animals vs. ever decreasing demand for beef. When all is said and done the declining demand for beef has so far won the battle.

JOE TEALE This decline in beef demand is the result of several facBroker tors such as the strength in the U.S. dollar which made Great Plains Commodity U.S. beef more expensive in the world market and this Afton, Minn. caused a decline in exports.

Another major reason is the disparity of beef prices in comparison to pork and chicken prices. Beef in relation to these competitive meats is too high on a per pound basis especially in a weak economy. The prospect for this disparity to change in the months ahead does not look particularly good for the cattle market. This is not to say that prices will not rally from time to time. However, the overall picture would suggest that prices are likely to remain defensive in the months ahead.

The hog market has struggled throughout the past year as numbers have been on the increase. The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture Hogs and Pigs report suggest that numbers are still increasing. From a supply picture this does not reflect well for any major upward move in price.

The good news for the hog market has been a constant or even slightly increasing demand for pork. It appears that the disparity in price of beef to pork has benefited the pork industry more by being a better value to the consumer. As long as this disparity continues the hog market should benefit. It may not come through much higher prices but more of a stabilizing of hog prices. This will allow for rallies from time to time, but the overall picture continues to look as if prices will sag through the year.

Grain Angles Grain marketing basics In today’s agricultural industry there continues to be a growing interest in improving one's education and skills in selling or marketing grain. Topics that are commonly discussed include developing a marketing plan, understanding costs, learning about pricing tools, and how to work with a commodity broker.

Developing a marketing plan Getting started is probably the most difficult part. The first rule is to understand no one can tell you what the markets are going to do. Does this mean we should stop listening to markets on the radio, magazine, or online? No. Market experts can help you better understand what the market influences are and what impacts they could have to price.

But, ultimately, prices are predictably unpredictable.

Instead of trying to shake our crystal balls in hope, fear, or KURT LENSING greed, let’s focus on what we can control, or at least influ- AgStar Assistant VP & Industry Specialist ence.

I’ve broken down the basics into three sections. Two factors we can control, and one we can influence: When to Sell: This does not mean trying to guess sales dates or picking the “top of the market.” This does mean understanding and training yourself to sell in increments, or at historically better times of year. For example, understand local market and basis and price trends. What does it cost you to store grain per month?

How to Sell: Are you using the right grain marketing tools? Many use cash sales and forward contracts. Other’s use “hybrid elevator contracts” or futures and options. Sometimes selling your grain and owning “paper” grain offers the right amount of risk-to-opportunity ratio for the operation. The farmer of today and tomorrow will be competing with those who continue to educate themselves on how to manage price risks.

Returns: Can we control the return on each dollar invested? Probably not, but we can greatly “influence” the farm’s returns. Commodity prices are one aspect that we can only control how and when we sell. Costs and yields are aspects that we can control. This is the tough one, as no banker, advisor or farm marketer has the answer. However, each business partner you work with should be helping you put these pieces together to enable you to make the best decision on your farm.

Keep your eye on ethanol and DDG exports to China basis premiums due to poor regional production. The most profitable ethanol margins in the western Corn Belt are 70 cents higher than the worst margins in the eastern Corn Belt.

Nationally, ethanol plants are averaging above breakeven margins despite lower ethanol prices needed to compete with cheaper gasoline.

According to a Dec. 17 article from Rueters: “China has formally accepted a petition from Chinese producers of distiller’s dried grains (DDGs) seeking anti-dumping duties on imports of the feed ingredient from the United States, according to a report by U.S. agricultural attaches in Beijing.”

to find processing in the Central region. “Butter makers indicate the market has them in a quandary.

Although prices have declined from the $2.90s, there is no sure price direction for the beginning of 2016.

Should stocks be purposely built up and held with confidence, or should churn operators lighten holdings before prices further deteriorate? “ Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk ended Dec. 24 at 76 cents per pound, down a half-cent on the week and 24 cents below a year ago, on one car sold this week.

Speaking to the powder, FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski says; “Coming up on the holiday break there won’t be much action as buyers are well covered for their short term needs. Demand from bakeries is winding down seasonally as well. The question to consider is will Mexico continue buying large volumes which was spurred by low prices? Or are they sitting on some comfortable inventories at this point and will be more patient if we experience a price rally? Otherwise other key markets such as the Middle East and North Africa are in a quandary as their wallets are much thinner with their low oil revenues.”

■ According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest Cold Storage report, Nov. 30 butter stocks totaled 132.7 million pounds, down a hefty 46.1 million pounds or 26 percent from October, but 25.1 million pounds or 23 percent above Nov. 30, 2014.

HighGround Dairy’s Eric Meyer doesn’t see the 23 percent increase in butter stocks from 2014 as a concern. Speaking in a DairyLine interview, Meyer said stocks have been running ahead of a year ago for quite some time but November stocks being down 46 million pounds from October was more attention getting.

That drawdown is fairly normal, he explained, but a little more than anticipated, and “Given that we’ve come off quite a bit on the butter prices, this may cause some time for stabilization. We may not see those numbers that we’ve seen in years past come January. We may see much more elevated levels on the butter side and our expectation is, due to the lack of production and relatively decent demand for domestic butterfat that is going to be the bullish surprise of 2016.” He admits that imports are arriving but he still sees prices elevated vs. prior years when we’ve had these kinds of stocks.

Meyer is not so optimistic on cheese, reasoning that stocks through summer, fall, and now early winter have remained elevated versus the prior year.

Total natural cheese up 13 percent from a year ago is more concerning to dairy farmers, he said, in that stocks didn’t move much from October.

Expectations were for the drawdown to be a few percentage points, he said, but “we got nothing. That, I think, is a concern going into the end of the year and First Quarter.” He also warned that “could put more pressure on cheese prices, even from where they are at low levels today, in the next 30 to 60 days.”

When asked about Super Bowl coming to the rescue, Meyer said most orders are already in the pipeline.

ast Father’s Day 85-year old Long Prairie resident Chuck McMurray received an unusual gift from his son Brian. The wooden box had a rainproof roof, two shelves, and a door with glass in it. Those are the basic requirements for a Little Free Library. Once Chuck and Brian had it mounted on a post near the sidewalk and Chuck had filled it with books, that’s exactly what they had.

That day Chuck and Alice McMurray, who have lived in their Lake Street home for half a century, joined an estimated 25,000 other Little Free Library Stewards around the world. The idea of the legion of Stewards is simple but grand. Literacy, community, and friendship can all be increased by the simple act of offering a free book to a neighbor or a passing stranger. If that person wants to leave a book in an exchange they are welcome to do so.

“They aren’t required to leave a book,” Alice says.

The McMurrays, who enjoy a wide range of books, join LFL Stewards in Monticello, Faribault, Mankato, Winona, Northfield, and numerous other towns across the region. Many of the Stewards are, like the McMurrays, retired. But in Clear Lake, Iowa, Nick Chizek built one as part of his quest to become an Eagle Scout.

Clear Lake Library Director, Jean Casey, supported young Chizek’s efforts. When she was asked about the possibility of book theft from the Little Free Libraries she paused and then said: “You can’t steal a free book, so we just don’t worry about that.”

Librarians have embraced the concept because it increases access to books. In Clay County, in northwestern Minnesota, the Lake Agassiz Regional Library System co-sponsored an LFL architecture project during the summer of 2015.

The McMurrays library drew visitors throughout the summer of 2015.

“Whenever I saw someone I knew I would go out and talk to them,” Alice said.

“A friend of mine really enjoyed the science fiction titles that he found,” Chuck said. “He left some books too.”

Chuck says he’s also found some very interesting titles in the library and has enjoyed reading them.

“We’ve found some really nice books for our nine great grandchildren as well,” Alice said.

With the onset of cold and damp weather, the McMurrays temporarily closed their Little Free Library.

“We found that the covers of the paperbacks curled in the cold weather,” Chuck said.
