Get ready for the 2019 Minnesota Farmfest For the past 36 years, the Minnesota Farmfest show has brought together area farmers and top agribusinesses for three days of networking, policy discussion, and special events. Join us August 6-8 to see the best and newest products on the market and learn new ways to advance your business.

Getting around There are plenty of ways to get around the 50 acres of Farmfest. Take advantage of the many convenient transportation options provided.

On-site shuttle: A complimentary on-site shuttle will be circling the show grounds throughout the three days. Look for the Farmfest Shuttle Stop signs and hop on for a ride around the perimeter of the show.

Parking lot shuttle: A shuttle will run through the parking lot during the show days to help you get from your car to the entrances and back again.

Shuttles will make multiple stops throughout the parking lot.

Golf cart rental: To reserve a golf cart, please contact Toby Bertsch of NB Golf Car at (605)-2754653 Golf carts are provided on a first come, first serve basis. Please call to reserve your cart.

Parking Free attendee parking is available on the south and west side of the show grounds.

Exhibitor parking will be located on the east side of the site across County Road 13, in the area next to the field demonstrations.

Wellness checks offered Minnesota Farmfest is offering a convenient way to get a free health screening during the show August 6–8.

On Aug. 6, the Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield is providing free blood pressure and glucose reading checks from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The HealthFair11 Community Healthmobile is doing blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), glucose and cholesterol readings on Aug. 7 — also from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Aug. 8 the Dermatology Interest Group of the Masonic Cancer

Center from the University of Minnesota is providing skin cancer screenings from 8 a.m. to noon.

On all three days, the screenings take place at the Farm Bureau Financial Wellness and Safety Pavilion.

In addition to health screenings, this new area will showcase live farm safety and rescue demonstrations and over 20 exhibitors with up-to-date agricultural safety and health information on a variety of topics. v

Farmfest to feature industrial hemp demo plot IDEAg Group, producers of Minnesota Farmfest, will showcase an industrial hemp demonstration plot at the Aug. 6-8 show.

Hemp crops are currently growing on 7,200 square feet of land and will be ready to display to Farmfest attendees by the opening day of the show. Three hemp varieties are represented — one fiber and two grain. Legacy Hemp, Bija Hemp and Hemp Genetics International provided the seed for the demonstration plots.

“We are excited for farmers to come to Farmfest to learn about hemp production,” said John Hendel, director of event sales for IDEAg Group. “Attendees will learn how to plant and nurture different varieties of the crop, in addition to uses for harvested hemp. We understand the enormous interest and curiosity around this new crop.”

In addition to planted hemp, the demo area will include potted cannabidiol plants for attendees to examine.

Hemp experts Matt Little and Garth Carlson from Midwest Hemp Farms, Charlie Levine from Hemp Acres, John Strohfus from Minnesota Hemp Farms Inc. and Bryan Parr from Legacy Hemp will be on hand to meet one-on-one with attendees and answer their questions about growing hemp.

“Minnesota is in its fourth year of the hemp pilot program and we are continuing to get calls from farmers expressing interest and enthusiasm in placing this crop in rotation but many still know very little,” said Margaret Wiatrowski, industrial hemp program coordinator, Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

IDEAg Group, producers of Farmfest, will showcase a hops demonstration yard at this year’s event.

This is the first year that hops are growing on the Farmfest grounds. The yard features two hop varieties: Cascade and Centennial, and will showcase optimal growing practices according to the most recent research and studies.

“Farmfest is the perfect venue to demonstrate hops production in an under-represented area of the state,” said John Hendel, director, event sales for IDEAg Group. “Visitors to Farmfest will be able to to see what hop production looks like and learn about the crop from area experts.”

In addition to seeing the hop yard on

the grounds of Farmfest, experienced hops growers and members of the Minnesota Hop Growers Association will attend to answer questions about the production of hops.

“Hops are a great way for farmers to work on diversifying their crop portfolio,” said Josh Havill, a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota and vice president of MHGA. “Craft beer has had a renaissance and brewers have a desire to keep their ingredient sources local,” he added. “Local growing and farmer practices can influence the flavor and aromatics of the final product.

U.S. Ag Secretary Perdue to appear at Farmfest Word was received July 17 that U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue will attend Farmfest on Aug. 7. Perdue will be taking part in the U.S. House Ag Committee listening session scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

The listening session forum will be part of an exciting line- By Kent up of feature forums at Farmfest this year. The forums will deal with key topics and policy issues affecting farm families and rural communities. All forums will take place in the Wick Buildings Forum and Education Center.

The U.S. House Ag Committee listening session will be hosted by U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chair Collin Peterson. Peterson is the Democrat congressman from Minnesota’s Seventh District. Other members of the Minnesota congressional delegation who will be participating in the listening session include U.S. Senator Tina Smith; Second District Congresswoman Angie Craig; First District Congressman Jim Hagedorn; Third District Congressman Dean Phillips; and Eighth District Congressman Pete Stauber. Attendees of the listening session will have an opportunity to ask questions and make comments to the Committee on issues related to ag policy and the farm economy.

Several prominent agricultural leaders will be participating in the feature forum on Aug. 6, entitled, “Ag Policy Discussion with National Ag Leaders”.

The forum will include a discussion of several important ag policy issues, including ag trade issues with China, the new USMCA agreement, MFP and disaster aid payments, implementation of the new farm bill, immigration reform, rural health care and infrastructure improvements. A panel of national leaders in various farm organizations and commodity groups will be present to discuss the issues. The panel includes American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall, Senior Vice President for National Farmers Union Rob Larew, Executive Director of Minnesota Agri Growth Tamara Nelsen, National Corn Growers Association Board Member Harold Wolle, and American Soybean Association Board Member Joel Schreurs. The forum begins at 10:30 a.m.

On Aug. 6 at 1:10 p.m., Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will deliver a keynote address followed by a feature forum, “The State of Rural Minnesota and the Agriculture Industry.”

This will be an opportunity to learn more about the roles and Thiesse responsibilities of the various departments within state government. The forum will be hosted by Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture Thom Petersen and will include nine other state commissioners or deputy commissioners from Minnesota. The panel includes Laura Bishop, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency; Cynthia Bauerly, Minnesota Department of Revenue; Jennifer Leimaile Ho, Minnesota Department of Housing; Steve Kelley, Minnesota Department of Commerce; Margaret Anderson Kelliher, Minnesota Department of Transportation; Nancy Leppink, Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry; Steve Gove, Minnesota Department of Economic Development; Barb Naramore, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; and Courtney Jordan Baechler, Minnesota Department of Health.

The 1:15 p.m. forum on Aug. 7 is “Battling ASF and other Pandemic Livestock Diseases.” This session will focus on the animal health concerns and preventative measures, as well as the financial challenges, associated with African swine fever and other high-profile livestock diseases. Panel members will include Executive Director of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association Dave Preisler; State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health; Veterinarian and National Pork Producers Association Board Member Dr. Gordon Spronk; Dr. Jerry Tonnison, director of the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Lab; and Mark Schultz, marketing consultant with North Star Commodities.
