Farmfest is back in person for 2021
IDEAg Group is pursuing all programming and show grounds preparations in anticipation of holding Minnesota Farmfest in-person, Aug. 3-5, 2021. The show opens and closes daily at 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. In the state of Minnesota, as of May 28, 2021, nearly all state Covid-19 restrictions have come to an end — including all capacity limits and distancing requirements (both indoors and outdoors). The Farmfest team’s focus is to ensure visitors feel safe when visiting Farmfest and to provide an engaging show experience for all attendees and exhibitors. Food vendors practice strict and safe food handling guidelines. There will be hand sanitizing stations throughout the grounds and open areas where guests can rest while also being socially distant and away from crowds. There will not be a mask mandate on the show grounds. For attendees new to the show or for anyone needing a refresher, below are some details to know about the show. The old favorites are back in 2021
Farmfest has long been known for its community, connection and ag industry expertise. But, the nostalgia of 40 years of Farmfest often comes in the form of food, festivities and fun that attendees come to expect year after year. If you’re an early bird who enjoys a hot stack of pancakes, then Wednesday morning, August 4 at 8 a.m., will be the day you’ll want to visit Farmfest. Back again this year is the Minnesota Farm Bureau pancake feed! Chris’s Cakes will be on site to put on a, flapjack-flipping
show. But not to worry, food safety in a post-pandemic world is of utmost importance to us. All guidelines set forth by the CDC and the state of Minnesota will be followed. And while we’re talking food, don’t forget to swing by the Minnesota Farm Bureau booth to pick up a porkchop on a stick. Or, grab a beef sandwich from the Cattleman’s Association. Plus, Linder Farm Network hosts the noonday show in the Wicks Building Farmfest Center at noon everyday where they also hand out
some yummy ice cream treats on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some of the annual Farmfest experiences are back as well. Don’t miss the ride and drive demonstrations that put attendees in the driver’s seat of the latest equipment brought to Farmfest by Ziegler Ag Equipment. The cattle chute demonstrations will happen twice a day in the livestock tent. Plus, all the forums that cover the hot topics facing the ag industry today will take place in the Wicks Building Farmfest Center. v

Cookbook’s focus is on the food and the farmers By KRISTIN KVENO The Land Staff Writer Minnesota chefs and farmers coming together to tell the story of how food goes from farm to table is the theme of Minnesota Farmers Union’s new cookbook. “The Farmer and the Chef: Farm Fresh Minnesota Recipes and Stories” was a labor of love for the author, Claudine Arndt, and photographer, Katie Cannon. “This cookbook has a little something for everyone,” Arndt said. Arndt is the manager of Minnesota Cooks, a program through MFU which celebrates the relationships between farmers in the state and those in the local restaurant industry who utilize farm fresh products. Cannon is the photographer for Minnesota Cooks along with running her own photography business. “Every year we feature 12 farm-totable partnerships,” Arndt said. Minnesota Cooks asks chefs, cooks, bakers to submit a recipe. Those recipes, along with food and farmer photographs, are compiled into a calendar. Minnesota Cooks started in 2003 and for quite a while they toyed with the idea of creating a cookbook. “Globe Pequot Press found us, approached us and asked if we wanted to do a cookbook,” Arndt said. “It’s a massive project.” Undeterred by the amount of work it was going to take in creating the cookbook, the focus was intently on giving the readers both chef and farmer components to the book. “It’s chef-driven recipes, farmer-forward stories,” Arndt said. There are 90 recipes and 20 farmer stories in the book. Arndt and Cannon looked through the recipes which had been featured in the calendar throughout the years. “We had a couple hundred recipes. Obviously, we wanted a nice variety of recipes,” Arndt said. “We were looking at our farmers, mak-
which follow life on the farm: daybreak, tractor meals, summer harvest and Sunday picnics. “It’s the moments we’re trying to capture,” Arndt said. Arndt has worked with Cannon for 10 years. “Her photography is incredibly stunning. It’s a really important part of the cookbook,” Arndt said. “I hope the reader gains a deeper appreciation for the source of their food.” Arndt would like people to consider spending their money locally as that helps strengthen our communities. For Cannon, taking the photographs, she wanted to show the story behind the food in picture form. “It’s not just about the food grown, it’s the work that goes into it.” Cannon understands farming isn’t a nine-to-five job and these recipes reflect that. “A farmers’ office can be everywhere. Those are the meals that are a little easier to eat on the go.” The photograing sure the farmers were represented,” Arndt said. With such an array of food produced by farmers in the state, it was vital to display that wide range in the book. “We wanted to show the diversity of what Minnesota produces,” Arndt said. Minnesota Cooks hired two home cooks to test the recipes as they wanted to ensure the recipes are home-cook friendly. The cookbook is filled with 150 photographs illustrating life on the farm and of the food in the recipes. For Arndt, working on this project was the perfect fit for this avid cookbook fan. “I’m one of those people that love reading cookbooks. That actual physical book still holds a special place.” The book is broken into chapters

phy is a great medium to tell a story. “In many cases they were chosen as they (farmers) were leaders and change makers in the local food scene,” Cannon said. For Cannon, working on this project with Arndt allowed the full range of story-telling in both written word and in the photography. “Claudine is a wonderful listener and is able to get the story behind the story, tell the deeper moments.” The emphasis on the visual aspect was the farms. “We really knew we wanted a lot of farm pictures,” Cannon said. “Claudine and I had so much fun creating this cookbook. It was a privilege,” Cannon said. For both Arndt and Cannon, the creation of the cookbook went beyond wanting to fill pages with recipes, it was uncovering the stories behind the people that grew the food that was featured in the recipes as well as honoring those chefs, cooks and bakers that find great value in cultivating culinary creations utilizing locally grown fare. v

Preparing the Farmfest grounds takes teamwork, planning By PAUL MALCHOW The Land Managing Editor MORGAN, Minn. — All is quiet at the pastoral Farmfest grounds outside of Morgan, Minn. The exhibit and parking areas are still appear to be closely mowed — the result of a lack of rain during the past six weeks. The corn, soybean and hops exhibit plots are just hitting their stride and the hemp plot was just planted. There is no sign of the impending chaos which will descend upon the area in about 40 days. But it’s organized chaos — a five-ring circus of trucks, equipment, and yes … even tents. The ringmaster of Farmfest is Taylor Anderson, operations manager for IDEAg. Anderson has already been hard at work organizing the 2021 edition of Farmfest for several weeks. “There’s an ebb and flow,” Anderson said. “There’s always something to do. We get recommendations from attendees and exhibitors and we’re always incorporating new ideas. We want to keep it interesting.” Anderson rolled out a large map of the Farmfest exhibit area showing each permanent structure and exhibit space. Many companies and organizations are already penciled in. The map fills as exhibit applications arrive. “The majority come back to the same sites,” he explained. “Some might drop out, some might want bigger or smaller spaces. It’s first come, first served as the applications come in.” The seed companies’ exhibit plots measure 60 feet by 130 feet. They are worked up in the spring and Anderson helps exhibitors get planted. “We have an eight-row John Deer planter and each plot takes about an hour to plant,” said Anderson. “Other than that, we stay hands-off. There’s no extra watering. The seed companies know the farmers know it’s dry, so they want to present an honest picture of what their product looks like in those conditions. We definitely need five inches of rain. At Dakotafest the soil isn’t as rich and we need to water.” Anderson said after the show, the crops planted in the plots don’t mature, but are chopped for silage. “All of these plots have different maturities, so it doesn’t make sense to wait until everything matures and then try to harvest.” Around mid-July, Anderson’s summer staff begins to arrive to get the grounds

into shape. He expects to have 15 people. “We have a core group that comes back every year. Some are farmers in the area, some are retirees. We’re always looking for more.” “We spruce it up a bit,” Anderson continued. “We pressure wash the buildings, spray the thistles, weeding, weedwhip the fence lines. There are a few buildings IDEAg owns. Some companies hire someone to come out and clean up. We’ll paint the electrical boxes, fences and ticket booths.” Anderson has a company come in July to handle dust control for the ribbons of gravel road which crisscross the grounds. Gravel is brought in to touch up here and there. Lincoln Tent, Inc. sets up the large white “Ag Tents” used for exhibit space a week before what Anderson calls “moving week.” Sunrise Gardens comes in to landscape exhibit areas. In the meantime, Anderson and his crew are measuring and marking. Each foot of the 49-acre grounds is accounted for. If you visit the grounds, you may notice metal disks on the ground — usually on each corner of the gravel road intersection. From these points, each exhibit area is measured, marked with spray paint and staked with identification markers. “Yep,” Anderson shook his head and chuckled. “We have a 300-foot tape and we measure each
lot. The corners are staked with the lot number. It takes two-and-a-half to three days. When the big equipment starts coming in, we remove the stakes so they don’t get run over. Then we restake the lots.” “Dealers start showing up a week before the show,” Anderson explained. “Some companies start before that. Monday (before the show) is pretty hectic. But a lot of returning exhibitors have their routine down. I’ll help place equipment with a fork lift. Electricians are here for the set-up. Every hook-up has to be inspected. Garbage cans are the last thing to go out.” Anderson said his crew starts out working 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. days; but “the closer we get to the show, the longer the days,” he admitted. “The day before (opening) is a late night.” Anderson is no “Taylor-come-lately” when it comes to Farmfest. “I started when I was 15 years-old,” he smiled. “Part-time staff, mowing and a go-fer. I worked every summer. They made me assistant operations manager in 2015 and in May of 2019 I got promoted.
Wayne Koenig had this job for years and I learned so much from him.” In addition to Farmfest, Anderson oversees operations for Dakotafest in Mitchell, S.D., which gets underway just 12 days after Farmfest, and the Amarillo Farm and Ranch Show which is held at the end of November. So with Dakotafest looming, it’s no surprise Anderson is making a quick departure from Morgan to Mitchell at the end of the show. “Most of the exhibitors are cleared out by Saturday afternoon,” said Anderson. “They’re going to the next show.” When the dust of Dakotafest settles, Anderson will be back at the Farmfest site tying up loose ends and evaluating the 2021 shows. He said things won’t settle down for him until the Amarillo show wrap-up. “It slows down a little in January and February,” he said. “But in March we’re back at it again to give it another go.” v

Land is your legacy. Give your acres for good. Acres for Good is a succession program focused on preserving one of southern Minnesota’s greatest assets:
your farmland. By donating land, you can keep your farmland farming, while using the income generated to impact causes you care about for future generations. Southern Minnesota Iniative Foundation (SMIF) recognizes the link between land and legacy. If you’re a landowner without an heir, consider leaving your land to your community as a lasting legacy; to be farmed, to be grown, to give back. SMIF’s Community Foundations:
“I grew up on a small farm outside of Kiester, Minnesota. So for me, farming is personal. The Acres for Good program is an opportunity to invest in rural philanthropy while safeguarding your farming legacy for generations to come. - Tim Penny, President & CEO Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation
