Land is your legacy. Give your acres for good. Acres for Good is a succession program focused on preserving one of southern Minnesota’s greatest assets: your farmland. By donating land, you can keep your farmland farming, while using the income generated to impact causes you care about for future generations. Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) recognizes the link between land and legacy. If you’re a landowner without an heir, consider leaving your land to your community as a lasting legacy; to be farmed, to be grown, to give back. SMIF’s Community Foundations:
“I grew up on a small farm outside of Kiester, Minnesota. So for me, farming is personal. The Acres for Good program is an opportunity to invest in local communities while safeguarding your farming legacy for generations to come. - Tim Penny, President & CEO Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation

This summer, Minnesota soybean farmers – with the help of the soybean checkoff – are stepping up and saluting frontline workers by donating pairs of soy-based Skechers shoes to local health care facilities. As a bonus feature, the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council is also encouraging community members to nominate a health care worker who is most deserving of a free pair of shoes. Nominations will be accepted through August 4. Be sure to stop by the Minnesota Soybean tent #620 at this year’s Farmfest to learn more. Scan for nomination form

Demonstrations all three days at UMASH Pavilion The Upper Midwest Agriculture Safety & Health Center (UMASH) brings the Farm Safety Pavilion back to the attendees of Minnesota Farmfest. Their focus is to provide up-to-date safety and health information for farmers, farm workers and their families in
an effort to prevent and/or reduce injuries and illness on farms. Each day of the show, there will be grain handling, ATV and UTV, tractor rollover and confined spaces safety demonstrations at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m and 2:00 p.m. Exhibit areas in the pavil-

ion will feature giveaways including sunblock, prescription deactivation kits, and more from Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation, personal protective equipment giveaways, and resources in respiratory protection, grain bin health and safety, mental health, ATV and UTV, and youth farm safety. Confined Spaces The manure pit safety program is intended for workers and managers in agriculture ... including pumping companies, farm operators and agriculture business owners. It will identify hazards associated with confined space work and help understand the process for confined space entry and lockout procedures. It will also show where to look for OSHA references and resources related to confined space entry in the confinement industry. ATV and UTV Safety Attendees can view safety demonstrations in the pavilion at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to learn about ATV and UTV safety for both adults and youth. Visitors can use both a tilt table and full-size ATV tilting trailer to do the following: Choose the correct PPE and proper body attire. Determine the size appropriate ATVUTV. Understand the concept of center of gravity and correct body positioning. Discover the burn points that can injure the lower leg. Learn proper use of a safety flag.
Tractor Rollover Rescue Eighty percent of all accidents on a farm involve a tractor. Rollover accidents are the leading cause of tractorrelated deaths, and rollover accidents occur faster than our human capacity for reaction. This demonstration will help visitors understand tractor stability, that tractors are top heavy and can easily be tipped. Firefighters will share the proper tools and training to properly “right” the tractor as more harm can be done to the victim if not done correctly. Grain Handling Safety Demonstrator: Jim Zwaschka, Fire Instructor, South Central College Ag Instructor and Assistant Chief, North Mankato Fire Department This demonstration will highlight examples of best practices for grain bin and machine safety. The instructor will use examples and provide explanations of lockout tagout for entry and what harnessing and anchor systems can do to make environments safer. Attendees will learn what planning should take place on the farm before the event of an emergency to ensure first responders have needed information. Experts will also share insight on respiratory protection and air monitoring and how it can be applied on the farm. Additional support provided by Minnesota Farm Bureau Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. v

Woman Farmer of the Year (continued) Nancy graduated from Boise State University with a Bachelor’s degree Social Science. She moved back to Pipestone for what she thought would be only one planting season, but had her love of farming reignited, starting her on a new career path. She grows corn and soybeans exclusively and is the sole operator of her farm. Nancy manages the farm, handling planting and harvesting, hauling grain and working ground, and sustaining a large vegetable garden.
Nancy enjoys contributing to her community and serves as the treasurer for the Pipestone County Troy Township Board of Directors. She also volunteers with the local 4-H clubs and hosts farm tours for these youth groups. “She belongs to the land, rather than the land belonging to her, as with the animals she raised, she cares for her land like her own child. She is the caretaker of the land for the future of her family and the next generation of farmers,” stated her nominator. v

U of M salutes 2022 Farm Families of the Year ST. PAUL, Minn. — Eighty-five farm families and operations will be honored in August by the University of Minnesota at the 2022 Farm Family of the Year ceremony. The farms will be recognized in a ceremony beginning at 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 4 in the Wick Buildings Farmfest Center. Those honored cover a wide spectrum of farming, from traditional crops and livestock to community-based ventures focused on organics and traditional
native foods. They were chosen by county-based local University of Minnesota Extension committees based on their demonstrated commitment to enhancing and supporting agriculture. “This year’s Minnesota’s Farm Families of the Year reflect the breadth and variety of agriculture in our state,” said Extension Dean Bev Durgan. “The University of Minnesota is proud to honor these families and their innovation and dedication to Minnesota agriculture.” v
Dawn Breitkreutz, Redwood Falls, Minn. Dawn grew up in Redwood Falls with no farming background, then served in the Air Force. On the farm, Dawn does a little bit of everything — although her focus is more on cattle management and operation. She is in charge of
the daily moves on pasture; checking and fixing fence; and running the swather and baler for feedstock. Dawn is very active in the agriculture community and is always looking for opportunities to share with others. Her leadership roles include Soil Health Academy President and Minnesota Soil Health Coalition mentor. She is also involved with the Minnesota State Cattlemen’s Association and serves beef sandwiches at Farmfest every year. Another indirect contribution Dawn has made and continues to make is her past service in the Air Force and current position as finance officer for the local American Legion Post #38. Her nominator wrote, “The passion Dawn has to share the story of her family’s farming journey with others is of great value to the future of agriculture. She was the spark that ignited the positive changes not only to the farms economic bottom line but also to their environment.” v

The questions will be asked by Thiesse rural leaders and will focus on variety of issues affecting the agriculture industry and greater Minnesota. Farmfest will host a special First District Congressional Candidate Forum for candidates from Minnesota’s First Congressional District. The forum is scheduled for Aug. 2 at 9:30 a.m. and will feature Republican Brad Finstad and DFL-candidate Jeff Ettinger. At the conclusion of Miller’s presentation, the five finalists for the 2022 Farmfest Woman Farmer of the Year Award will be introduced, concluding with the announcement of this year’s winner.
