irst, a story of hard work and disappointment from the NSRA. Despite working hard behind the scenes to secure a suitable venue the decision has regrettably been taken that the club’s Fun Run will not happen again this year. The committee has explored venues in Peterborough, Bedford, Lincolnshire, Northampton, and Cambridge but none have worked out for a variety of reasons. Disappointing news indeed, but the committee hasn’t given up and will continue with the quest to find a suitable venue. That doesn’t, however, put an end to all the fun on the NSRA event calendar for this year. For those who like their fun with added sand, then Fun on The Beach in Great Yarmouth is
just for you. It takes place over the weekend of 13-14 July and the NSRA has made sure there will be plenty of fun ingredients for you to enjoy. With plenty of hot rod parking on the seafront, you can enjoy a leisurely Saturday making the most of the delicious eats and live music on offer at the diner. It will then be time for a cruise along the coast, where you will find yet more live music. Sunday is show day, with awesome prizes and ultimate bragging rights. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, how about rodders taking over the cinema and enjoying the best hot rod-inspired films all weekend? What’s not to like about a fun-filled hot rod weekend at the seaside? www.nsra.org.uk

Funny times
In the first qualifying round for Motorsport UK Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car on the Friday at the Festival of Power, Tim Garlick clocked the fastest-ever NNFC run in Europe. Tim piloted Apache to a 5.9406 / 239.89, setting ET and speed records and carding a new SPR track record for the class. Later in the day Tony Betts ran his first official run of the event and broke the European record once again, albeit unofficially. Venom clocked 5.5958 / 250.64, the first-ever run over 250mph. The car ended up in the field at the end of the track, but both it and Tony were okay. With the meeting being curtailed due to bad weather, neither run was backed up to set a new MSUK record but a new SPR track record was carded – twice in the same day. Amazing.

News & reviews Media power
Following a weekend away at the Nostalgia Nationals, Nick Barnett went to take his ’32 roadster back to his workshop but found that it wouldn’t start. Tracing the problem back to an electrical fault he opted to leave the car on his driveway overnight, safely blocked in by his wife Rachel’s daily driver. Off he went to work, returning home at 3:00 am. Rachel then woke him up at 7:30 am,
asking if he had moved the roadster as it wasn’t on the drive. The horror that must have caused is unimaginable. Phone calls to the police and insurance company followed immediately, as did sharing news of the theft on social media. Facebook came up trumps as a lady messaged saying she had found the car just a few streets away. The doors, bonnet and
boot were open and the seats and interior panels had been removed, with the thieves presumably looking for a tracker. Fortunately, there was no damage, and the roadster was soon safely back in Nick’s workshop. Despite the car being immobile and blocked in by another vehicle it was still stolen. Let Nick and Rachel’s harrowing experience be a wake-up call to us all.

News & reviews Charitable grand
The generous boys and girls of Surrey Street Rodders have been at it again. Despite this year’s Wheels Day not exactly being a financial success, as you’ll read in our event feature, the club has already announced the first charity recipient of a £1,000 donation in the run-up to WD50. With honorary club member Russ Carpenter in mind, the chosen charity is Prostate Cancer UK. Russ was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer during Covid but it was caught early and he’s happily been cancerfree since his treatment finished. That understandably makes Prostate Cancer UK very close to the club’s hearts. Although SSR doesn’t usually support such a large organisation, we heartily agree this is a very worthwhile cause to donate to in the lead-up to such a milestone Wheels Day. Top job as always guys.
Forward planning
There’s nothing like having plenty of advance notice of a new event on the calendar, and that’s just what the guys behind the Herts Auto Show Channel have done. The inaugural Custom and Classic Show will take place on Sunday 22 June 2025, yup 2025. Full details will be announced in the near future so keep an eye on the event website. www.customandclassicshow.co.uk

When Mike dropped in the Lotus twin-cam engine all those years ago he also grafted on fibreglass Ford Escort bubble arches…
…which shrouded a set of ubiquitous Wolfrace slot mags
A large cut out allowing the shotgun scoop to poke through
So far Mike has been content with going cruising in the Anglia, but his plans include at least some quartermile action. With a car that looks this tough, it would be rude not to
S
“
o,” I asked Mike Zschorn as my opening question. “How many modified cars have you owned?” “Just the one,” was his immediate response. “Mind you, I have owned it for nigh on 50 years now.” Few of us can lay claim to owning a vehicle for anything like that long – nor
indeed to only having had one modified car in our lifetime. Mike bought the ’67 Anglia 105E as a stocker and used it as his daily driver, leaving it just as it was for a while. After all, it was less than 10 years old when he bought it. He recalls it needing new front wings at some stage, so he dropped by his local Ford dealership, Busseys in Norwich, and
purchased a NOS pair off the shelf. Those were the days, eh? Eventually, temptation at work took hold and he could no longer resist taking advantage of staff discounts to give the Anglia a bit more pep in the go department. Reason being that in his twenties, Mike worked at Lotus Cars and found that one of the company’s famed twin-cam engines

With the monocoque floor cut out, a box section chassis was fabricated and the Hauser Racing rear rails were attached
slotted nicely into the Anglia’s engine bay. Widened arches and slot mags gave the car the de rigeur look of the era, with Mike still using it as his daily – only now a daily with added cool. Around 20 years ago, Mike decided the Anglia needed freshening up and turned to his friend John Stearman of IR Body Repairs (IRBR) in Norwich when it came to having it
An 8-inch Ford rear axle was initially fitted, but that has since been replaced by a beefier 9-inch
resprayed. John, a long-standing hot rodder, agreed to do the job but had one stipulation: “I’m not doing it unless you put a V8 under the bonnet.”
Clip joint
Mike didn’t need much persuasion. But rather than simply dropping in a small block, he chose to go down the Pro Street route.
Not only does the roll cage tie in the front and rear chassis rails, it also provides the top mounting points for the Escort front struts
With John Stearman enlisted to tackle the fabrication and welding, work began on the mild-to-wild transformation. But Mike then took a job working offshore, and with him being absent for long periods of time the project was put on hold indefinitely. Much later, with Mike’s offshore duties completed, work could resume – with the basis for the Pro Street conversion being

Strictly a 2-seater thanks to the intrusion of the wheel tubs and rollcage, the Anglia sports a pair of Jaz bucket seats. The transmission is stirred into action by a B&M shifter, although that could have been replaced by a Hurst Pro Ratchet shifter by the time you read this
a Hauser Racing weld-in rear chassis clip with 5-link axle location, coilovers and wheel tubs. Don’t for one minute think this was simply a back-halving job though, far from it. John fabricated a new 3 x 2-inch box section chassis, to which he attached the Hauser ‘rear clip’. The body shell was then welded to the fresh chassis, and a complete new floor was fabricated from sheet steel. John also modified and welded in the six-point rollcage
The fabricated sheet steel dashboard is home to a set of TPI-Tech gauges, the stainless steel steering column came from Pop’ Browns and the 11-inch Mountney wheel is the largest possible due to restricted knee clearance. Just visible is the only piece of original Anglia interior furniture still in place, the handbrake lever
that Mike had sourced from Safety Devices in Newmarket. Initially, the axle of choice was a Ford 8-inch, but that has now been junked in favour of a Hauser Racing-built Ford 9-inch with a 3.1 PowerTrax diff. Uprating the front-end suspension was a more straightforward operation. The spec now reads Mk2 Escort struts with 300lb springs, along with a Mk2 Escort steering rack. The Anglia runs Wilwood discs and
4-pot calipers all round. When it came to choosing a V8 to meet the criteria laid down by John Stearman, Mike opted to tread the ever-popular proven route of small block Chevy with TH350 transmission.
Smooth operator
Body-wise, things were less conventional. A close shave came first with all the bumpers, handles, trim and even the roof guttering disappearing. For a yet smoother look, the
The custom front grille and prominent bonnet cowl and shotgun scoop radically transform the Anglia’s front profile, while the rollcage hints that it’s not just for show. The registration number isn’t just for show either – it’s a pukka plate that Mike bought a few years back

The Anglia’s rear profile provides the most prominent display of the Pro Street build style. John Stearman formed the smoother rear panel which dispenses with the number plate recess
The rollcage provides a convenient mounting point for a Sim Racing Type R tacho and shift light
body was de-seamed and a new rear panel fabbed to replace the factory original which incorporated a number plate recess. Moving to the front of the Anglia, the body mods are far more pronounced. An induction-style bonnet cowl was formed in steel with a large cut out allowing the shotgun scoop to poke through. The bonnet opens via electrically activated struts, which were painstakingly slow in operation when I first came across the car in Peterborough
The door cards were trimmed in black vinyl by Gary Sergent, the fitment of electric windows giving a cleaner look with only the need for door handles
three years ago. Thankfully, that issue has now been resolved by fitting a different pair of struts. Conscious of the need for maximum airflow directed at the radiator, it was felt that the Ford-designed front grille needed work. The redesign resulted in a much deeper, almost open-mouth-looking opening. This more rounded approach greatly improves the flow of cooling air, and the distinctive void was enhanced by the fitting
of a Jaguar-esque stainless steel mesh insert, sourced from The Mesh Company in Warrington. To round it off, John formed the horizontal twin bar finisher which provides a mount for the Ford oval badge, all painted red of course. A full stainless steel exhaust system was fabricated and fitted by A TM Engineering in Norfolk, with Mike highly praising their work. A Toyota Yaris that John happened to be breaking for spares at the time donated

The small block Chevy he’d bought in good faith turned out to be dodgy
Under the rear lurks a Hauser Racingbuilt Ford 9-inch axle with a PowerTrax diff and 5-bar location. The subtle body mods and suspension set-ups combine to give the Anglia a perfect stance. The all-steel body is lavishly coated in Ford Radiant Red, sprayed by John Stearman just as he promised all those years ago
Based around a +30thou 400ci small block built by Paul Wayling, the Chevy V8 boasts a new crank, pistons and rods together with AFR ali heads. An MSD ignition provides the spark, a Holley 750 double pumper provides the fuel and a pair of eBay-sourced ram horn headers feed the waste gases to the custom exhaust system. Dominating it all is a shotgun scoop that menacingly pokes its head out of the bonnet opening
its door latching and electric window mechanisms, the wiring was based around a fuse box from Car Builder Solutions, and the inside of the bodyshell was liberally smothered in Dynamat. Gary Sergent of Sergent Auto Trim in Horsford, Norwich was appointed to upholster the interior, and his first was to add yet more Dynamat, a sound decision on his part.
Dodgy business
The fresh look Anglia was completed and on the road in early 2001, and was displayed on the red carpet at the National Hot Rod, Custom and American Car Show in Peterborough that summer. Initial cooling issues were resolved by the addition of an
oil cooler, along with the fitment of a larger custom radiator. But the car then had to come off the road for about a year after Mike discovered the small block Chevy he’d bought in good faith turned out to be dodgy. The answer to that issue came in the form of a replacement block that Mike sourced from Chris Goodale, and having a fresh motor built by Paul Wayling. This new engine has been dyno’d at 350bhp with 475lbf.ft of torque, which Mike tells us is more than enough for a car the size of the Anglia. Backing up the engine is a rebuilt TH350 transmission fitted with a B&M shift kit which was also sourced from Chris Goodale. Mike beamed as he told me the Anglia drives like a dream. “It runs straight and
doesn’t drift, making one-handed cruising a pleasure. You do have to be wary about booting it too hard with that locker diff though. I may switch to street and strip tyres sometime in the future, but that’s all. I’ve no plans to change anything else. “All is good, it’s just as I wanted. I do intend to run it up the strip though, just to see what it will do. Besides, I want to get a picture of it next to Ron Bartlett’s Super Pro ET Anglia…” CC

Carry on regardless… …and that’s just what Surrey Street Rodders did on Good Friday ■ Words: Dave Biggadyke and Whiff Smith ■ Pics: Richard Agar, Surrey Street Rodders
For almost half a century, Surrey Street Rodders have encountered pretty much everything while staging Wheels Day. There have been highs and there have been lows, all of which SSR has taken in its stride. Glorious sunshine, rain, flooded show fields and even snow have all featured over the years, as have changes of venue and landowner interference. Despite it all, with the understandable exception of the Covid years, the show has always gone on, much to the credit of those behind the scenes.
Straight from the outset, changes were once again afoot in 2024. Together with providing a great day out for both participants and exhibitors, Wheels Day is about raising money for deserving charities. Unfortunately, however, following discussions with the land agents, it was apparent that staging the show at its spiritual home, Rushmoor Arena, was no longer financially viable. Undeterred, SSR came up with a Plan B – although this did mean a move away from Surrey. At least it was still in the Home Counties, though.
Many would have called it a day after the weather took its toll the day before. But not the hardy souls of Surrey Street Rodders
Graham Howard-Wall’s ’49 Cadillac Coupe DeVille took the Classic American Pick trophy…
…while the NSRA Pick silverware went the way of this ex-CC featured Flathead-powered Fordson van
The stage was set, and Wheels Day 2024 was confirmed as being scheduled for Newbury Showground on Good Friday. All was looking good… until the weather gods played their joker. SSR stalwart Whiff Smith takes up the story. ‘At 6pm on the Thursday before Wheels Day, the Surrey Street Rodders were on site, huddled behind a rental van watching the last of the club’s four marquees being ripped to shreds. Wet and cold, with two members injured from one marquee that took off like a rocket 30 feet into the air and a mangled PA system, we

The event artwork, a product of the skilled hands of Tootall Paul, was in keeping with this particular staging of Wheels Day and depicted a well-known car produced in 1949

were trying to decide whether Wheels Day should be cancelled. ‘Money was going to be lost on this one. There was nowhere for the band, the kids’ entertainment, the PA and John Price, there was no club hospitality and a few traders had decided to call it quits. There was every chance there would be little else other than a few cars braving everything nature could throw at them. ‘The club voted unanimously, and the decision was made. We’re British, and we will carry on regardless! This was going to be a show for real car guys…
Dave Nuthall came along in his recently finished Chevy C10 pick-up and drove home with a Top Ten trophy at his side
‘Amazingly, 635 show cars turned up, along with another handful of traders and a few thousand spectators. John Price and Rob Ashard did a sterling job operating the remains of the PA from the confines of an SUV, and the new venue with its network of roads proved popular. ‘Thanks to all the hardy souls who did venture out to attend Wheels Day 2024. Fortunately, Surrey Steet Rodders have had a contingency plan in place for some time, so we’ll be back. Indeed, the countdown for the 50th Wheels Day in 2025 has already begun!’
Chris Palmer’s tasteful and classy ’36 Ford 5-window was a well-deserved Top Ten winner
When we featured Andy Smith’s chopped Mk1 Consul in the February ’19 issue, he mentioned the black paint had served its purpose. True to his word, it’s since had a makeover. If you recognise Andy Simmons Hodge’s Top Ten placed flamed ’55 Ford Pop, it may be because it featured in a recent episode of the TV programme Car SOS
Above: Darren Kavern waits in line in his ’38 Chevy sedan delivery before being called around to receive a Top Ten award Left: With all they had to contend with, SSR can be excused for not logging the owner’s name of this ’70 Audi 100. They did place the car in the Top Ten though

Dan Clare is one of Britain’s most prolific traditional hot rod builders. He always starts with a late ’27 Model T frame… and he always has the kettle on. Our kinda guy Words and Pics: Tony Thacker
W
henever I’m in the UK, I try to visit Dan Clare. One of my favourite hot rod builders, he doesn’t do it professionally – but he certainly builds prolifically, and every time I swing by hsi place he’s got a new brew on the boil. Dan builds traditional-style, open-wheel, Model T-based roadsters that he drives the snot out of. This latest black brew is based, as are all of his builds, on the late ’27 T frame that is a little heavier gauge than the earlier frames, and this one is widened to take a V8.
He suicided the front end and, ahead of that, suspended a smiley ’37 tube axle beneath a neatly tapered British transverse leaf spring, with reversed eyes by Jones Springs in Darlaston. Mini tube shocks are a nod toward modern technology but not so the ’32 Ford mechanical brakes, converted to hydraulic using VW cylinders. Out back, there’s a ’48 banjo hung on a high-arch Model T leaf spring with two more Mini tube shocks. A short, open drive shaft connects the rear end to a Type 1 Capri 5-speed that is bolted to a French flathead. This has a 3 5/16 bore and a Merc 4-inch
crank, for a capacity of about 276 cubic inches. Dan also used iron Merc 8CM heads, which he says were a direct, bolt-on fit. Engine accessories include a VW generator, an old fifties Fram oil filter assembly and a Holley 94 carb atop an aluminium intake. The engine sits behind a brass, bullnose Morris shell with a sprint car style grille hand-made by Dan. The radiator was custom made by Custom Rads in Derby and employs an electric fan. Moving rearward, the cowl is a genuine ’27 T item that has been narrowed and lowered.
Tapered transverse leaf spring has reversed eyes by Jones Springs of Darlaston and runs with tube shocks from a Mini. Brakes are ’32 Ford, with VW cylinders converting them to hydraulic

The windscreen posts are genuine ’27 T, but Dan hand-formed the remainder of the body in aluminium. Dan always seems to excel when it comes to his Edwardian-inspired interiors and this car is no exception as it features an original 1920s’ spring steel steering wheel, a hand-made column and a reversed Corvair steering box. The hand-shaped aluminium dash sports an eclectic assortment of instruments, switches and that giant brass kill switch. Poking up through the floor are original Model A pedals. The clutch is connected by a cable and the brake operates a fifties’ Ford truck master cylinder. Tucked away under the hand-made seat is an Odyssey Extreme battery. Out on the extremities are 16-inch redpainted Kelsey-Hayes wires fitted with Blockley tires: 5.50x16 up front and 6.50x16 on the rear. Dan has about a six-pack of these homemade Modifieds under his belt and they are little belters, getting driven hard and put away dirty. I can’t wait to see what my next trip brings, as I know he is working those long winter nights. And that he’ll have the kettle on. CC
Original 1920s’ spring steel steering wheel, on a hand-made column, is a highlight of a wonderfully Edwardian interior. Here comes the sun After a soggy start to the season, the Nostalgia Nationals finally saw Santa Pod blessed by a bit of good weather. And the sun definitely shone on the righteous as the past came out to play Gasser Circus
Nostalgia racing doesn’t get more iconic than this, and 19 cars went into battle – though that number was almost immediately reduced by one when Christian Wilson’s blower threw its belt during his first pass. It was all about Ray Turner, however – 40 years on from his debut aboard Green Onions, his 327ci ’55 Chevy, still showing them how it’s done by topping the table in qualifying and scoring a best RT in the process. With the forecast not looking too pretty for Monday, the first round of eliminations was brought forward to Sunday evening. And Turner was still on form, taking out Adam Kruczynski’s Chevy 210 in a round which also saw Simon Prest score a perfect ET with 11.0026 on an 11.00 dial. Both were to exit in the next round, as Sean Milsom and Jason Hollamby progressed to semis with Chris Layram and Sam Glenn respectively. Glenn walked it when Layram broke out, while Milsom took the holeshot win that saw him into the final. That was to be an anticlimax, however, when Glenn’s 389ci Austin pickup refused to start in the pairing lanes, leaving Milsom’s Morris Z-Type van to claim the honours on a solo pass.
Celebrating 40 years in Gasser Circus, all of them aboard Green Onions, Ray Turner dominated qualifications before losing out here to Jason Hollamby in the second eliminating round Sam Glenn made it all the way to the Gasser Circus final and was waiting in the pairing lanes when his 389ci Pontiac-engined Austin truck refused to fire up. Heartbreaking
Above: Sean Milsom’s Morris Z-Type van took the honours unchallenged with Sam Glenn broken down in the pairing lanes. He’s not one to dial down on the spectacle, though

If the soggy conditions that laid waste to the Festival of Power (twice) made you nostalgic for summer, this year’s Nostalgia Nationals had the answer. The early May Bank Holiday served up plenty of sunshine – allowing Santa Pod to serve up three full days of action, with five competitive classes mixed in among all the pre-’73 RWYB fun.

Nostalgia Superstock
Plenty of wheels-up launches in a class full of big cars with even bigger engines, with Chris Goodale putting on a series of mighty ones in the recently CC-featured Russo’s Rat. The Rat eventually qualified 8th, one place behind the Challenger of Dave Billadeau – who oversaw the project to rebuild it. Dan Sanderson, meanwhile, topped qualifying in his Mustang. Sanderson was among the winners in the first round of eliminations, as was Dan Williams – who hobbled up the strip with mechanical issues but got lucky when Glynn Dunford broke out next to him. Williams’ luck was to run out next time out, though Sanderson’s very much held when
Bringing back the spirit of the early days was a strong field of Wild Bunch, Nostalgia Superstock, Outlaw Anglia, Supercharged Outlaws and Gasser Circus racers. In addition, the NSRA had its eye on the RWYB entries as it looked for worthy winners of its Quick Six gongs. Numbers seemed to peak over the weekend days, perhaps in response to the sunny weather. Monday was quieter, with a forecast threatening rain – which held off long enough to allow the event to run to its conclusion but may have put off some prospective day visitors, particularly
with the final-day deluge at Festival of Speed still fresh in people’s memories. Unlike some other forms of classic motorsport, this is the real thing – the camaraderie is great in the pits, but out on the strip you’re in it to win it. A perfect example is Ray Turner, who arrived at Santa Pod celebrating 40 years of competing in his Green Onions ’55 Chevy. It was already almost 30 years old when he bought it, and here it is on the eve of its 70th year – and still not just taking part but going hard, leading the field the whole way through the qualifying rounds and only succumbing in the second stage of eliminations. That’s the kind of spirit that makes nostalgia racing what it is. And as always, the racers put on one hell of a show for everyone in the crowd, with hard racing and big burnouts aplenty over all three days. NOW it feels like the season is properly up and running!
he broke out – only for Alan Huckle to save his skin by lighting a cherry. Matt Dowdy, meanwhile, was seeing off Lee Chiles with a perfect 11.1264 on an 11.12 dial. All this was packed in to the Sunday, with the final three rounds of eliminations scheduled for Monday before rain was expected to start falling. Jack Bishop had been putting on a great show in his Barracuda and he kept it up to to set up a semi which he won when Jake Cawthorne broke out – as did Chris Tyhurst, making it Bishop versus John Sleath in the final. This too was decided by a breakout, Bishop being the overeager one as Sleath posted 9.7833 on a 9.73 dial to take the win.
Above: Russo’s Rat is one of the most popular cars we’ve featured over the last year, and now it’s back in action Chris Goodale is driving it the way it was built to be driven
John Sleath fought his way through to the latter stages in Nostalgia Superstock – then had it easy, winning his semi and then the final on breakouts

Colin Millar dominates this heads-up class, which is never short on spectacle, though it was Ben Kennedy that led the board after the first round of qualifiers. Millar got into the groove after that, moving up to the top spot and never looking back after a bye saw him safely past the first round of eliminations. An 8.7087 PB for Kennedy took him past Luke Hoskins and into the semis, where a bye saw him line up against Millar in the final. Here, the man from Glenrothes leant a little harder on his 632ci mill to nudge his way down into the sevens – still not as fast as the Flyin’ Fyfer has gone in the past, but more than enough to take yet another convincing win.
Ben Kennedy posted the best time in Q1, but thereafter it was the Colin Millar show. The two were to meet in the final, where the Flyin’ Fyfer ramped it up a notch but still took home the honours with a bit left in reserve

Springbridge Direct Wild Bunch
Nostalgia doesn’t get any better than when the Wild Bunch club get together in their dragsters, altereds and slingshots from the early days of racing. And five rounds of time trials on the Saturday and Sunday saw Ruaridh Hart post no less than three PB speeds in Bravehart, culminating in a 124.18. Alan Skipp was doing something similar in Chasin’ Time, busting 150mph for the first time at this meeting and finishing up with 153.68 as his new PB. There was a PB pass of 11.1064/122.43 for Pete Whitfield in Rowell Rail, and Bob Hawkins put down his quickest ET yet of 6.4368 in Time Traveller II. Further PBs in the comp rounds saw James Griffen post 9.0875 in Kiss My Gas while Hart did it yet again, this time producing both speed and ET bests with a 10.5376 / 125.26 run. First place, however, went to Dan Wilson’s Antique Toy, with a variance of just 0.03317 averaged over three runs – included one on which he was just 0.0008 over his dial. Andy Roy was second on average variance and James Auld third, with the latter also returning the best RT of the event.
James Griffen scored a 9.0875 PB in the Wild Bunch, while Kiss My Gas took home the special award for best appearing car
Wild Bunch is all about staying as close as possible to your dial. Bob Hawkins didn’t win, but he ran a PB pass of 6.4368 in Time Traveller II as well as reaching 206.81mph, the highest speed recorded for the event
First place among the Wild Bunch went to Dan Wilson in Antique Toy, whose average variance of just 0.03317 included one in which he was just 0.0008 over his dial
The PBs were coming thick and fast in Wild Bunch, none more so than from Ruaridh Hart – who broke his own records for speed and/or ET a total of four times
Left: Fresh from its starring role on the cover of our May issue, Bryan Whitfield was continuing with test launches in High Spirits – the first of the OSCAR nitro altereds to break cover. One of them almost ended up with an excursion into the wall, but Bryan managed to save it and was out again the next day Left Supercharged Outlaws is as free of rules as it can be – if you’re safe, blown and fast, you’re in. That’s why you’ll see such a huge variety of cars taking part, with the likes of Bob Glassup’s Capri mixing it with rails, slingshots, floppers and more
Supercharged Outlaws
Is there any other form of motorsport with as much variety as this? If its blown and fast enough, it’s in – which means rods and customs, rails, slingshots, altereds, funny cars, you name it. It’s been called a show class, which hardly does justice to how competitive it is, but these guys sure do know how to please a crowd. Witness Simon Boot pulling seven wheelies in his first run for drama, and Bob Glassup’s Capri lining up next to Mick Hannah’s slingshot for variety – not to
mention Keith Freeman’s epic half-track burnout for spectacle and Brian Wilson and Roy Wilding running side by side sevens for competition. Aaron Windridge laid down a 7.4731 / 178.52 PB in Grim Reaper, while Rob Grabham’s 198.98mph in Freddy’s Revenge was his new best speed. It came at the cost of engine damage, however, which meant playtime was over. Bryan Whitfield had a close call when High Spirits veered to the right and flirted
with the wall, but the car lived to fight another day – that day being the next one, actually, when it was back out again as its development, and that of the OSCAR nostalgia nitro racing scene, continues. Finally, though, it was Luke Watts and Mick Checkett in the final battle for Outlaw honours, with Checkett taking it on a 7.6503 / 163.07 pass. Freeman and Gary Parkes faced off for third, the former taking the bronze medal aboard his unmistakable yellow ’32.

ost of you will be familiar with the Chevrolet C10 pick-up. But how about its successor, the C20? Well, there’s not a lot of difference between them, as the C10 was a huge success and, as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The C20 was the third generation of the C/K range. It was a 3/4 ton, rear-wheel drive pick-up that came with options of inline six and V8 small and big-block power plants. And this one in particular caught its current owner Nathan Pedersen’s eye almost before he first saw it. Nathan has had a varied history when it comes to cars. It all began with an early Citroën Saxo on 20” rims, then he moved into the air-cooled VW scene with two ’64 Beetles, one of which came from Sweden. Next were GTI versions of the Polo and Lupo, followed
by S8 and S4 Audis, a track-spec Mini JCW and a BMW E38. A whole lot of nothing you’re ever likely to see at the Supernats, then, but if you love cars you love cars and with such varied tastes he was bound to end up owning a custom sooner of later. ‘I had always fancied a truck but never thought I would have the money as they were increasing in price,’ he admits. ‘But I had a lot of interest in the BMW and once that sold, I had a look around to see what was available. ‘I was looking at Lincoln Continentals and Cadillacs as well as pick-ups, when I came across this C20 not too far away from me in Bournemouth. It had already been bagged, with a manual two-switch air ride set up and a lot of other work done as well. I went with my old man and came away with a lot going through my mind – but deep down I knew it was the one, as two days later I paid
a deposit. And on New Year’s Day 2022, I picked her up and became her owner.’
Godsend
The truck came with a Chevy 350 SBC motor, rather unusually mated to a four-speed manual of unknown origin. Behind it was a Chevy 10-bolt rear, which Nathan liked for when work needed to be done. ‘I’m no mechanic, and luckily I found Craig Diaper of Poulten’s Garage in Woolston, Southampton, who is an absolute godsend. Even the silliest things, I can ring him and he can sort it out for me.’ The more Nathan looked at the truck, the more he realised where he wanted it to be. And where he wanted it to be was so far down in the weeds it was almost underground,. Which meant a serious amount of cutting and fabrication was going to be required. Fortunately, he came across

the right guy for the job. ‘I found Josh Gresswell, who had just decided to open his own shop, Gresswell’s, in St Neots. We had a chat about what I wanted, which was for the truck to sit right on the ground when it was completely aired out. ‘We both seemed to hit it off, and he really understood what I wanted to achieve. So he took the truck in and set about making the vision a reality.’ Over to Josh to describe what he did to achieve the truck’s low-down stance. ‘It would be easier to tell you what we didn’t do! Basically, me and Nathan wanted to get the truck as low down as possible but without doing a body drop, so it has a stock floor and drives like a dream. I started off by notching the chassis at the front and a big one in the rear, then I raised the sub-frame, steering box, engine and gearbox, gearbox tunnel, front
“Josh and I both seemed to hit it off, and he really understood what I wanted to achieve” shock mounts, centre chassis cross bracing, rear shock mounts and metal bed floor. ‘I then made some custom drop pocket control arms, a custom steering column and custom lower bag mounts. Next, I modified the inner arches and bonnet hinges, made some big lowering drop blocks and shortened the tubs in the rear. ‘We had to have some drop spindles imported from the States as the C20 has a specific lug pattern. They were expensive, but necessary to get the truck low – and we’re both really pleased with how it has come out.’
Helping out
Josh also fitted the Watts linkage on the rear axle, which was made by a company in the States Nathan found by the name of Alex V Metalworks. ‘I was there every other week to help out with Josh and get involved,’ he admits, ‘however it turned out I was more of a hinderance – to the point of Josh politely telling me to stay away and leave him be.’ Fair cop, but it was still a team effort. ‘The first day of stripping the truck,’ continues Nathan, ‘my partner Shannon took the wood from the bed, sanded it all
No sooner had Nathan started stripping the truck than his partner Shannon was sanding down the wood from the bed and finishing it with decking paint and clear coat. Team work makes the dream work

The Watt’s linkage on the rear axle came all the way from America, where Nathan found it on sale from the manufacturer Alex V Metalworks Josh did everything you can think of to lower the truck. Modified inner arches and hood hinges were part of it, but very much only a part of a much wider suit of work
Nathan reckons this could be the world’s lowest C20. We don’t know how much competition it has for the honour, but you’d need to be packing some serious stance to mess with it
down and then applied some decking paint and clear coat.’ After four months of cutting and fabrication, the truck was ready and Nathan had booked it in to a big show for its debut. And what happened? It decided to not play ball and threw a tantrum. ‘Josh had taken it on a test drive,’ he explains, ‘and while he was out the dizzy decided to let go. Being an SBC, you can’t just go to your local car parts shop and grab one, so I had to order one and wait – meaning the truck missed her debut. I was gutted, but I’m pleased to say that (crossing fingers and touching lots of wood), she has been faultless ever since.’ If you don’t recognise the paint on the truck, there’s a reason for that. The main colour is Honda Championship White, while
the pinstripe is a shade found on a Fiat Bravo. Wheels are stock steelies painted in VW gloss white with Chevy hubcaps and Whitewall inserts, while the tyres come in at 215/65R16 up front and 215/70R16 out back. ‘I’m really pleased with it and how she looks,’ continues Nathan. ‘It’s so cool to air her out and look back and see how low she is – we believe it is the lowest C20 in the country, possibly the world. ‘I love being able to get in and take her to shows, or trips to the beach at Bournemouth and have a BBQ watching the sunset. Depending on finances, I possibly want to have the bench seat recovered and fit a decent sound system. Possibly some wheels, but to be honest I really like how she is and how she drives.
Boggo steelies were painted in VW gloss white then adorned with Chevy hubcaps and whitewall inserts. When the truck’s parked up, you can barely see the ones at the back, but those up front are a bit more visible
‘I would like to thank my partner Shannon for helping out and putting up with me. Josh Gresswell for the hard work and graft that made my vision a reality. Craig Diaper of Poultens Garage for the mechanical stu, and anyone else who has helped out.’

Festival of Showers Postponed from Easter to let the Santa Pod car parks dry out, the Festival of Power finally got underway in late April. But the Great British weather wasn’t finished with it yet… Santa Pod’s ever-popular seasonopening event was postponed from its original date this year, thanks to persistent winter rainfall which left the site’s car parks waterlogged into the spring. The Festival of Power Rescheduled finally took place over the last weekend of April, and guess what? It rained.
Things did start quite promisingly, with sunny weather providing ideal conditions for racing on the Friday morning as competitors in 15 four-wheeled classes looked forward to the first of two qualifying days. But Saturday morning was all but wiped out by rain – and though the afternoon was a success, it came back with a vengeance overnight
and into Sunday. The situation was bad enough for Santa Pod to issue an urgent communication asking day ticket holders not to travel, as the car parks were once again waterlogged – and after a miserably wet morning, the event was finally abandoned altogether just after midday. Thus there are no final results to show for the event, with points being based

A fire under Jason Phelps’ nitro flopper left Patrik Pers as the only runner in the rest of qualifying. But he didn’t run very far in the next round, when a safety cutout popped his chutes at the wrong end of the strip
on the final standings in qualifying. As always, though, there were several performances worthy of note from throughout the many classes. These included PBs for John Sleath and Joe Kellett in Peter Nee Super Pro ET, as well as Jack Williams’ first ever 180mph run and Bob Doyle’s quickest pass since 2010. This was one of only two classes that managed to make it as far as their first elimination round, the other being Modurstang Pro ET – which even managed to complete a full set of pairings before the fun was unceremoniously washed away (Super Pro ET was two short at curfew on the Saturday night). Nick Mugridge had just posted his fastest ever time at this point, breaking out in the process but recording a win over Laura Baynton who obligingly also beat her index. This after another display of virtuoso wheel-standing by John Bean
Tim Moore led qualifying from beginning to end in Super Gas – and came away with the Perfect ET Award after running 9.9005 against the 9.90 class index
Tim Garlick piloted Apache to 5.9406 / 239.89 – a new Santa Pod record in Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car
throughout a qualifying session that was won by Leigh Morris in the Green with Envy Jag. Nic Williams was on top in Track Worx Comp Eliminator after some strong wheelies of his own – and a new PB of 7.9186 / 172.95 in the Williams Bros’ Copo Camaro. Rouven Dawson, also in a Copo, had earlier pushed it into the 8s for the first time. Rob Carter had an eventful time of it in Pro Race Engineering VW Pro, blowing his tyres straight off the line in the third qualifying session – but then coming back strong to post a new PB 7.5295 / 185.10 in the fourth.

Michael De Souza is a new face in Street Eliminator aboard his 408ci Zephyr
Scenes of joy from Tony Betts’ crew after he sent Venom down the strip to a new European record of 5.8959 / 250.64 – the first ever 250mph pass in Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car. He didn’t just send it down the strip but straight off the end and into the field, but no harm done
There was drama in Nitro Funny Car when fire erupted beneath Jason Phelps’ Gladiator, leaving just Patrik Pers in the running. Motorsport UK Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car, meanwhile, saw Tim Garlick post a new Santa Pod class record with 5.9406 / 239.89, the fastest ever class time in Europe – only for Tony Betts to come out for the following session in Venom and set a new European record of 5.8959 / 250.64. That was the first ever 250mph pass in Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car, though it ended in some drama of its own when the vehicle overshot the end of the track and ended up in the field. These records were not backed up and therefore remain unofficial, as was Carter’s aforementioned PB pass – which was the fastest ever in VW Pro. Andres Arnover scored a Santa Pod track speed record for Pro Mod, too, with a PB of 252.41mph. This came after Jon Webster launched into second in qualifying with a 5.9095 / 247.67 PB of his own, taking advantage of a mishap for Jean Dulamon whose tyres hooked up during the burnout, putting him into the wall. That was nothing compared to the weekend Stu Doignie was having, though. Having won out in Tony Morris Carburetors Super Gas last time round at the Easter Nationals, he couldn’t be at Santa Pod for the Festival of Power because of a house fire on the eve of the event. Nobody hurt, but a nightmare nonetheless. Also in Super Gas, Tim Moore won the Hayley Hadfield Perfect ET Award for a 9.9005 / 144.38 run on the 9.90 class index. Pro ET racers Bob Molden and Dave Fulton won the Photo Finish Award, supported by Bob Roberts, after crossing the line a mere 0.0201 seconds apart,
while Nigel Gregson, in Quantum Leap Racing VW Sportsman, took the Bad Habit Racing Perfect Light Award with a RT of just 0.0003 seconds. No shortage of excellent racing while the track was dry, then – but unfortunately no shortage of rain, either, resulting in a Festival of Power which in the end will be remembered for what went wrong rather than what went right. CC
Plenty of big wheelies from John Bean in Pro ET, just as there were last time out at the Easter Nats
Reigning Comp Eliminator champ Nic Williams got off to a winning start in the previous round and was well on target for more success, topping qualifying from start to finish
Jack Williams was one of several drivers to post new PBs in Super Pro ET. His was particularly notable as he breached 180mph for the first time

The 303ci Oldsmobile V8 came into Nic’s life with tube headers and a ’57 Rochester 4-barrel carb. Now, it’s running an Edelbrock OL4-96 intake head and four Stromberg 97s, which he reckons will get more than 180bhp from it. As always, it’s a work in progress – the next job is to create a flatter housing design for the air filters so that the tall Strombergs will fit under the hood

You can see here why some rethinking is needed for the air filter housings. The chromed air filters look sensational, but Pendine regs say you’ve got to run with a hood in place – and right now, the Strombergs are saying this engine bay ain’t big enough for the two of us

’d always been interested in Pendine Sands,’ says Nic Rossano of his 1931 Model A Ford Roadster. ‘The history, the land speed records and the place itself. I spectated at the Vintage Hot Rod Association (VHRA) event in 2014 with my family and that was it – I said to myself that one day, I was gonna do that!’ Nic had a long-held interest in hot rods, having built his first, a 1948 Vauxhall Velox with a Rover V8, when he was 24 years old. ‘After rebuilding the Velox for the fourth time, my wife Celena and I took it to the 2015 Hot Rod Euronationals in Avoise, north-western France. While we were there, I saw this very nice ’29 Model A Roadster that was traditionally built and that got the old juices flowing.’ In January 2020, Nic was hunting around on the internet, as we all do at times. He
casually put in some search terms on an online auction site and up came this 1931 Model A – which was at the time a partially completed project in Connecticut. ‘I was looking for something that was not too much money. The car also had the Oldsmobile Rocket engine – I thought that was a good power unit. ‘I put in a bid for it but didn’t meet the reserve price. I got in touch with the owner and, after some discussions and a bit of to and fro, we did a deal. ‘The car was originally built in the 1960s, with the chassis work professionally done, and the engine was fully rebuilt in 2017. For some reason, further work had stopped and there had been more done recently to make the car saleable. I was chuffed to have bought the car and organised for it to be shipped to the UK, however with various
hold ups it didn’t arrive until May 2020.’ Not your typical lockdown project, then, but very much a project during lockdown. ‘A friend and I drove to Southampton with a trailer to collect the car and I was a bit nervous. The warehouse foreman checked the paperwork and said “quite often they don’t start, so we have to get them out of the container with a forklift,” – which didn’t help my nerves! But then he disappeared off and I heard a car start up. It sounded fantastic. I looked at my mate and said ‘I hope that’s mine!”’ Indeed it was. And Connie, as the car has been named, had started the first time after many weeks in storage. It was a good sign.
Boxed and tubed

been fully boxed and tube strengthened. Some further ’32 parts complete the bodywork – a modified hood, along with the cowl and dashboard. The car is powered by a ’49 Oldsmobile 303 V8 from a Rocket 88. ‘It’s a wellengineered power unit and straightforward to work on,’ says Nic. And it sounds fantastic, don’t forget. Until very recently, there was a ’60 Saginaw four-speed manual transmission, but for this year Nic has replaced it with a Muncie M21 close-ratio gearbox on the basis that this will be better suited to racing on the sand. The engine originally had tube headers and a ’57 Rochester 4-barrel carburettor. This was the set up that Nic used when he first ran the car at Pendine Sands in June last year – however since then, he has
sourced an Edelbrock OL4-96 intake head and fitted four Stromberg 97 carbs, a set up which he hopes will give the engine greater power. The set-up hasn’t been tested yet but Nic reckons it’s good for more than 180bhp. The Strombergs are taller and, although the new chromed air filters look fantastic, they don’t fit under the bonnet so another solution is needed. Nic is currently designing and building a flatter metal air filter housing for the carbs that will fit under the hood, as the cars have to run with an enclosed engine at Pendine. A 1960 Lincoln Ford 9” rear axle puts the power down, with the original transverse leaf spring holding it in place and drum brakes slowing things down. The front axle is a Superbell I-Beam with Buick drum brakes and another transverse leaf spring,
while steering from a Chevy Vega has been modified to fit. Nic has a couple of sets of wheels and tyres for the car. ‘I tend to use a set of 16inch wire wheels adapted to fit white-wall cross-ply tyres for shows. When I’m racing, I put on 15-inch steels as they are much more robust.’ In order to take part in VHRA events, further safety equipment has been fitted. Mark Huxley at Huxley Motorsport manufactured and fitted the roll over bar, with a diagonal brace. ‘A VHRA participant saw the car at Bidford Wings and Wheels,’ says Nic. ‘He mentioned that the rear brackets had to have three bolts instead of two to suit IOPD regulations. ‘I went back to Mark, who kindly modified them – he was surprised at the stringent VHRA regulations
52 CUSTOM CAR JULY 2024

23/05/2024 22:50
Nic took the ’31 to Mark Huxley at Huxley Motorsport, who manufactured and fitted the roll bar. He’s a man who builds tagged cages for drag racing, so he’s pretty much at the top of the game – but even he was surprised to learn that VHRA regs demand three bolts, not just two, on the rear brackets
as he builds full tagged drag racing roll cages.’ The seats have been strengthened and a five-point harness added. The seats and door cards were upholstered by Wendy and Chris Bond, and the interior was finished off with some practical rubber flooring.
Life’s a beach
The annual Pendine Sands Hot Rod Races are the VHRA’s blue riband event. They are run on a section of the seven mile long beach at Pendine, on the south coast of Wales. In the early 1900s, the Sands were used for car and motorcycle races and later, famously, land speed record attempts. Once the tide has gone out for the day, the sand is naturally flattened. The course is marked out and the various classes of
cars are timed over a half-mile section. Nic was running in a Vintage OHV Class which is abbreviated to V8/R, as the engine in his car is pre-1954 (V for vintage, 8 for the number of cylinders and R for Roadster). He had asked some of his VHRA friends for guidance, having never driven at Pendine before. ‘Their advice was to start in second gear and keep the power on, especially if the car starts to move around a bit. You aim between the timing flags and put your foot down. It sounds simple but driving on sand feels different, especially as I was the second from last to run and the surface had been churned up a bit. ‘My son was watching my first run and he’s always joking with me. He ran over and said “you’ve got the class record!” I thought
he was having me on. But he was insistent – “go and look at the timing board.” So I went over and there it was – 92mph. I couldn’t quite believe it – I had managed to get the V8/R class record! ‘I went faster on the next few runs. On my fourth, I managed to get the record up to 93.46mph, then we had some rain which made the sand less grippy. I guess I should be happy with that, but I was keen to get to 100mph. So that’s the aim for next year. ‘There’s a group in the VHRA that have run at 100mph plus. You get a T-shirt, and I’d love one of those!’ The 11th running of the VHRA Hot Rod Races will take place on Pendine Sands over the weekend of 22-23 June 2024. With luck, for Nic it will be a case of ‘been there, done that… and got the T-shirt.’ CC

PART 3: TOPPING OUT
L
ast time out, we left the Model A with its body having been chopped and freshly blasted in readiness for attention to be directed at the roof – or rather the lack of it. Fabricating a new roof was a major undertaking but one that Buckland Automotive carried off with aplomb, forming a jigsaw of sheet steel panels that came together perfectly. The fresh metal was underpinned with wooden ribs to complete the new top. The wings and running boards were then repaired and modified as necessary before being bolted into place. With the sedan then pushed out into the sunshine, it was time to take a step back to fully appreciate the extent of the transformation. The stance and profile are spot on and the blown Hemi up front provides a menacing focal point. The car looks killer in bare metal but will be absolutely stunning when painted. July or August are the target dates for its debut – and we can’t wait.
With the fragility of the roof being an issue, the internal box section bracing structure was left in situ inside the sedan body
It was a daunting task ahead, as whichever way you looked at it…
…a new roof was needed. The problem was there wasn’t much left of the original for reference
The only option was to bite the bullet and carefully replicate the panels one piece at a time

First, though, a flashback moment. With the plan being to reuse them, the ‘screen visor and gutter rails had been removed prior to the roof chop. It wasn’t a hard job
The roof side section panels were cut from 1.2mm thick sheet steel and formed on the metal shaping wheel, accurately replicating the profiles of the originals
…and a perfect job that made of it – proving that the right tools, along with knowledge and experience, do indeed make life easier
The individual panels were all formed before assembly commenced
…with considerable attention being paid to ensure each panel lined up perfectly
A replica wood roof rib kit was sourced from a restoration shop in the American Midwest, with the header bar being added at this stage to provide a datum point
The roof insert panel, also cut from 1.2mm sheet steel, was shaped on the wheel and then tack welded into position
The insert panel was then planished to get a perfect crown before being fully welded and hammer planished 20mm at a time to avoid excessive heat build-up
Custom-made tooling was used in the Pullmax to form recesses for the gutter rails…
One by one, the roof side panels were tacked into place with a TIG welder…

With the metalwork completed, the wooden roof ribs were fitted
Far left, left: The original ‘screen visor was also refitted after it had been repaired, as were the gutter rails and the original firewall, which was reversed to aid clearance for the Hemi Above: The front wings were repaired and extended by 2” on their trailing edges to match the chassis lengthening covered in part 1 of last month’s double-bill

With the rear wings and running boards repaired and refitted, the sedan was ready for the next stage of its journey to a new life

Putting on the ritz
SoCal P Diaries
Former Custom Car editor Tony Thacker lives in California these days, and this month he’s been to the source of early US hot rodding…
Below: Open engine overhead valves were not strictly the order of the day, but I really liked this Nailhead-powered ‘bare nekid’ well channeled ’30-31 coupe with patch panels
Owning one, I’m kinda partial to ’27 Roadsters atop Deuce rails and this fl atheadpowered example owned by Tom DeJohn had exactly the right early look
asadena, a ritzy town north east of Los Angeles, was one of the original hot beds of hot rodding. Pasadenian Earl Mansell hosted the first organised lakes meet, the Southern California Championship Sweepstakes, at Muroc in 1927. The city was also home to early speed shops including Blair’s, the world’s oldest continuously open speed shop that opened in 1945 and is still going today. Pasadena was also home to some of the earliest hot rod clubs, including the Night Flyers and the Velociteers. The Night Flyers were involved with dry lakes racing before the formation of the SCTA in 1937. In October 1945, the Flyers and the Velociteers joined forces to form the Pasadena Roadster Club (PRC). The PRC worked hard to counter the bad Dave Williamson, ‘Traffi c Violator’ rap that hot rodders got and one of their makes it to the fi nish line in his ’30-31 main activities was their annual Reliability Roadster complete with a Deuce grille Run (RR) that started in 1947. The PRC was reinvigorated in 2002 as a club for early-style hot rods, primarily roadsters. They held their first RR in 2004, covering the original 1947 route. This year saw the 12th running of the event with more than 70 hot rods covering the two hour, 100-mile route up into the San Gabriel Mountains. As befits a reliability run, no-one broke down.
Remember when hot rodders drilled everything including the brake drums for lightness? I don’t think it made much diff erence, especially when you have a heavy ol’ steel Deuce
Brian Bauer has plenty of provenance that his A-V8 on an A frame was a race car back in the day. His roadster sports a rare, original Super Bell 5-inch dropped tube axle
You can always rely on Tom and Diana Branch of the Immortals to be out driving their Deuces. Up front is Tom and his daughter Delia, with wife Diana bringing up the rear in her Tudor
Left: Robert Maciel brought along his fullfendered A-V8 roadster pickup. Interesting how many shades of green there were in the fi eld of seventy cars
Above: I have no idea who owned this fourdoor ’56, as it was not offi cially entered and just tagged along for the fun of it. And that’s what these runs should be about

Below: Sorry about the focus on this shot of Sam Davis’ fl athead-powered Deuce but I just loved the look of this 5-window with its piecut slicks and red details
Above: This nicely chopped banger-powered ’28-29 Model A Roadster pickup on A rails and owned by Dominic Malfi tano was really nicely detailed and painted
Alec Harrell is a direct descendant of the Harrell family who operated one of LA’s fi rst speeds shops dating back to 1932. Alec has slowly been putting their line of fl athead parts back into production
Another one of many roadster pickups on the Reliability Run and another not entered, but full fendered and I especially liked the 5-spokes
Lots of originality going on with this Deuce Roadster, from its headlight bar to the fl attie with Edelbrock script heads to its Off enhauser fi rewall-mounted oil fi lter
Old Crow Speed Shop proprietor Bobby Green built this tribute to Babe Stapp’s Mines Field racer of 1933. Note the nerf bar made out of some fl at steel bar and the accessory ‘Speedlights’ The Hot Jaz Spl owned by PRC member JD Massey harks back to the very early days of lakes racing, when a fenderless Model A with a banger and shaved running boards was the way to go
Larry Metz is the owner of this ‘PHLTV8’ 5-window that is obviously fl athead powered. Incidentally, the car was for sale… but then everything is for sale
It’s hard to fault Ford’s ’34 Roadster and this one belonging to John Carillo tugs at the strings with its chopped rag top and louvered hood
1949 ‘Shoebox’ Fords are always going to get your attention, but especially when they are chopped and dropped and bright green. I like the way the owner left the ‘FORD’ script
I’m partial to tubs and these two were exceptional. The one in the foreground belonged to Mike Johnson while the one with the Deuce truck grille belonged to Chris Kiernan
No doubt one of the coolest ‘36s on the scene is this 3-window owned by Manuel Reyes, whose name you might recognise as the pinstriper of Pete Chapouris’ The California Kid
First home though not necessarily the winner was the ‘Adler Special’ boat-tail roadster. Owned by Doug Adler, it was originally built and raced by Chuck Manning in the very early fi fties
Eric ‘The Wheelsmith’ Vaughn turned out late, but better late than never, in this Deuce Roadster with Hailbrand dog-dish wheels – it just sits right
