Belcher’s T

Pic: Bonhams Goodwood Revival Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia

I

t almost slipped under the radar that the iconic Jaguar V12-powered Ford Model T built by the late Gary Belcher was listed in the Goodwood Revival Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia auction in early September. When we did get wind of the listing, it was too late to give readers advance notice. We can tell you that the Model T now has a new owner though. Having made its debut in 1979, the car features a scratch-built chassis, Jag V12 engine and manual transmission, a dropped I beam front axle and a Jaguar IRS. Every part of the car is detailed to the max, and the T debuted in 1979 – winning many awards at the Custom Car Show and gracing the cover of that year’s May issue. The T also had a place on the cover of the December ’91 issue after it had been named in the Custom Car Hall of Fame.

Subsequently, the T was displayed for almost 30 years at the Haynes Motor Museum and, more recently, returned to the Belcher family. It is still in excellent condition, in running order and recently serviced. The sale lot included many of the awards the car had received over the years, plus assorted magazine features. The package did not, however, include the iconic registration, 15 ROD, although that would be offered to the winner via private negotiation. The guide price was £25-£35k, with the hammer falling on a final bid of £38k. The questions now are; who bought it, will it be stored away once again or seen in public at shows and, will it still be sporting that iconic registration number? If you are the new owner, please get in touch to fill in the blanks. Rest assured, we will only spill whatever beans you want us to.

Barry Flood

Long-standing hot rodder and frequent crosser of The Solent, Barry Flood, passed away in mid-August following a long illness. Barry was one-of-kind, much like his unmistakable extended cab Model A pickup, a vehicle he regularly brought over to shows on the mainland for his home on the Isle of Wight. Barry was ‘of that era’, he had time for everyone and will be sorely missed by so many. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Barry

Frank Griffin

Drag racing stalwart Frank Griffin sadly passed away early in September. Moving on from being a long-time racer himself, Frank progressed through to assisting his son Cliff in following in his tyre tracks. Ever helpful and supportive, Frank always had time for anyone involved in drag racing in whatever way. He was such a huge character in the sport and his passing leaves a hole in the hearts of many. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Frank

Julie Wilcox

Another untimely passing is that of Julie Wilcox, following a short illness. NDRC/ NDRA and SCR/APIRA marshal and official, Julie had been a valued member of the Long Marston team since the midPic: Jerry Cookson eighties. With a constant smile on her face, Julie marshalled in a firm but fair way which racers and teams respected. Constantly on the go, Julie’s energy was infectious, and she even found time to run in the NDRC Steet Class at Long Marston and Blackbushe. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends. RIP Julie

Alternative testing

New from Laser Tools is this user-friendly battery and alternator tester, suitable for use on both 12V and 24V DC systems. Featuring an easy-to-read LED display, the tester is used with the vehicle’s engine running by connecting the black crocodile clip to a suitable earth point and then pressing the red positive probe on to the battery positive terminal. It offers two alternator readings: alternator over-charging and alternator OK (13.5V), as well as three battery status readings: Good (≥ 75%), Fair (≥ 25%), and Poor (<25%). It is fitted with a large magnetic strip on the rear allowing for it to be attached to the inside of the engine bay or bonnet for hands-free operation and is supplied with an 820mm red positive test lead with probe and a black negative test lead with crocodile clip. www.lasertools.co.uk

Something for the weekend? Not just a picnic

Sunday 29 September is also the day for the Yorkshire American Car Club (YANCS) show at Fort Paull near Hull. Contrary to social media rumour mongering in recent weeks, the organisers would like to confirm that the Fort is still open and the show is most definitely going ahead. All American vehicles, classics, bikes, trikes and trucks are welcome, with admission for show car occupants priced at £3 per person. Please note that whilst the Fort IS open, it is devoid of exhibits at this current time. Facebook: yancs Yorkshire / yancs1@yahoo.co.uk

Sunday 13 October is the date for this year’s Surrey Street Rodders Picnic. The day promises a gentle run out to some lovely places, with small but sensible B roads being the order of the day. The start point is The Jack Phillips in Godalming (GU7 1DY), where good-priced breakfasts are served from 8am. The picnic will head off around 10am (note, this will be from the rear car park, not Main Street) and there will be a mid-point coffee / rest stop. The total route covers around 50 miles, and the final destination is in a lovely area with plenty of old stuff to see – we are assured that isn’t a reference to some of the SSR members. A BBQ will be provided, so bring along something to slap on it and SSR will supply the soft drinks, salad and even sauces. Let

Inside, a tilt column is topped off with a ’40 Ford wheel, the dash houses Stewart Warner gauges and the sound system incorporates Bluetooth controls. Everything on the car is brand new, and Alan had it

extensively inspected before he bought it. The car is UK registered, has a current MOT certificate and has never made its UK debut. The family is looking for around £33k for the Model A. Please respect that the Model T is most definitely not for sale, so don’t bother asking. Carol Spittle – 07709275533 / carol.spittle@sky.com

Fort America Period swapping If it’s not already on your radar then fear not, as if you’re reading this issue promptly you can still make it along to the VHRA Swap Meet on Sunday 29 September. It takes place at The Camp, Ramsey, Cambs PE26 2XB and runs from 9am through to 2pm. Staged in conjunction with The Ford Model A and Early Ford V8 Clubs, this is the event for those looking to buy or sell parts for period rods and customs – so if you’re after billet dress-up parts, our advice is that you stay at home. www.vhra.co.uk

Before he passed away, Alan Spittle imported another hot rod as a stablemate to his cherished Centre-door Model T. Making more hay

The guys and gals behind the Hot Rod Hayride have publically thanked all those who made it such an incredible success this year: the reception staff, the marshals, the security, the bands and DJs, the PA and stage crew and of course the Detonators Car Club (who made sure everyone raced round in mostly the right direction at the Oval Track). They would also like to thank the Bisley Staff who looked after everyone and are happy to do so again next year thanks to the respect shown to their beautiful site. And, of course, thanks to the Hayriders who transform the site into the incredible, colourful, moving art show of pre-’66 machinery. Make a note in your diary, because the Hayride will be back at Bisley on 1-3 August 2025. www.hotrodhayride.co.uk

Funny business

The Speedghost Motorsport Team was also running the numbers at the Euro Finals. A storming run in Nitro Funny Car from Patrik Pers carded a 4.1746 / 299.69 in the Dodge Charger, setting a new European ET and speed record. Congratulations to all involved with the Swedish-based Speedghost Motorsport Team.

Creating Havoc

During Dragstalgia in July, Nick Davis broke the European Fuel Altered record he’d set 15 years previously when he ran Havoc to a 6.0440 / 237.43. At the Euro Finals in September, he not only broke the record again, he broke it twice. On Friday, Nick ran a 6.0391/239.85. But he saved the best to last and carded a stonking 5.9838 / 237.32 the following day. Truly amazing, and all credit to Nick and the team. Word is the little green car will now be put out to pasture, but we’ve heard that before. Whatever the future brings, the team can only be proud of all they’ve achieved.

Northern swapsie

News that the NSRA Northern Swap Meet was returning to the Magna Science Centre, Rotherham S60 1DX this year broke too late to give readers advance notice. That’s far from the case for 2025 though, as the date for that has already been confirmed as Sunday 26 October. That, too, will be at Magna. www.nsra.org.uk

Sexy flexy

‘Clearly the superior choice for quality and precision.’ That’s what Serck Motorsport says about Meziere’s 168-tooth billet flex plate for big and small-block Chevy V8s. Machined from 4340 round bar, these promise the strongest gear teeth, least runout and the best longevity on the market. Based in Escondido, CA, Meziere has been doing its thing for 27 years – following a philosophy which is to do, in its own words, ‘just a little more’ than its customers expect. Sounds good. As does a one-piece flex plate that’s 0.17” thick and concentric machined to 0.005″, with chamfered gear teeth to provide the best possible engagement. The plate has a 12 pitch tooth profile and weighs 6.3lb. It’s currently on offer at Serck, meaning you can get it for £393.28 including VAT – that’s 30% off the headline ticket. Stocks are limited, so get on down to serckmotorsport.co.uk.

A sight for sore eyes

Dedenbear’s L2 Lightning Plus delay box features an enlarged display – ‘making it the easiest to read delay box that Dedenbear has ever manufactured.’ If you find yourself doing that arm’s length squinting thing with the menu at restaurants and are thinking that right enough, your box is getting harder to read with every passing season, welcome to our world. Ain’t none of us getting any younger. Anyway, the L2 is exactly the same size as the L1 (3” x 7.5”) but has a 250% larger viewable area. The control keys and display are backlit, too, so you don’t have to strain those poor peepers if it’s a bit dark in your cabin. The unit has four different delay modes and two timers, each allowing you to adjust your delay to increments of a thousandth of a second. It has all the features you’d expect of a modern delay box, like start line control, adjustable trans brake output and independent line lock output. But mainly, it’s old bloke friendly. It’s also poor person friendly (just as well, now they’ve stopped your winter fuel allowance) as Serck Motorsport is currently offering it at a 30% discount. This means you can get one for £592.02 including VAT, a saving of £211.44 – you can read about it, hopefully without squinting, by visiting serckmotorsport.co.uk.

n the feature on his Pop pick-up that we ran in the August issue of CC, Mike Pye made reference to owner Steve Smith being a director of a tyre company. Mike went on to say that Steve can be seen in one of a number of different cars at shows promoting the Nankang tyre brand. The Pop pick-up is one of those cars, another being this tasty ’62 Chevy II Nova. Steve’s association with the Nova began way back in mid-2010, following a late-night dalliance with the Rods’n’Sods internet forum. “I came across a Ray’s Classics ad

The front end was stripped in readiness for the IFS and new engine. The Heidts kit includes new bolt-in front chassis legs, making for a straightforward conversion

for a ’62 Nova,” he recalled. “This was a car I’d had in my head for quite a few years and, having told my wife Caroline it was cheap and just needed putting together, I struck a deal with Ray. It turned out his description of the car was spot on, although I have to confess my interpretation to Caroline may not have been quite so accurate. “The Nova arrived and was just as described, with solid metalwork and no evidence of rust. It was, however, in bits right down to the ‘screens being duct taped in place. That suited me though as prior to it

“It would be on the road in no time”

landing, I’d arranged for a local paint shop, Shorade in Cannock, to take it straight in and get it painted. Then with the car put back together, it would be on the road in no time.”

Handling issues

However, you may have deduced that the reality wasn’t quite as straightforward as that. By April 2011, the car was pretty much back together with the rolling stock spec reading small block Chevy, TH350 transmission, stock suspension and drum brakes all round. On paper that reads okay but the truth was the handling was far from ideal, with the Nova being all over the road. Steve felt the responsibility for that lay firmly with the front suspension. The

16. Steve described the Audi A5 seats as being trimmed in hard leather, but that’s no longer the case

11. With the running gear stripped, the bulkhead and underside were painted

14. The team at Retro Barn also fabricated the stainless steel exhaust system

16/09/2024 17:37

“It’s a complete reverse-built car” following year, the trim and bumpers were in their rightful places and, having sourced an Audi A5 interior that maybe nearly fitted, Steve settled for an on-the-road-in-2013 plan in his head. He did, however, have a few shows to go to that year, and another truck he had that was already on the road needed a little work. With that, 2012 was over. The following year, Steve purchased another project, but the month he’d set aside to complete that one turned into the whole year. Now, where have we heard that story before? That meant the Nova’s

The paint colour, Audi Quartz Grey, was applied more than 13 years ago. Steve was right when he commented that the project was a reverse-build – first paint the body then change the entire running gear, including tubbing the rear end…

questionable front suspension still needed rectifying. While at the Hot Rod Drags that September, he got into a conversation about how bad it was and the name Heidts was mentioned a few times. That was dismissed, however, as the cost of importing a kit for the conversion would be prohibitive. The thought of such a set-up providing the car with rack and pinion steering kept going around in Steve’s head, though. Sometimes, life circumstances can take an unexpected twist and sometimes that twist even proves advantageous. And that’s

just what happened. Come 2104, a friend was on the lookout for a ‘50s truck project and Steve came across just what he was looking for – at Ray’s Classics, again. When helping out, following his own experience of shipping a vehicle from the States, that previously discarded notion of a front clip popped into Steve’s head once again. “I suddenly had a revelation. I could ship a complete clip kit over in the back of the truck. A phone call to Heidts resulted in everything I needed being delivered to Ray’s prior to the truck being shipped to the UK. As

soon as it was over here, the Nova’s original front suspension was removed and the transformation began.”

Impulse buy

The front clip wasn’t the only twist in the tale, however. In 2015, Steve visited Stateside Autos in Atherstone to pick up a couple of parts he needed and came home with a 5.3-litre Vortec truck engine. We’ve often heard of rodders getting carried away when buying parts, but maybe that was taking things to the extreme. Consequently, that added another item to Steve’s ever-expanding shopping list as he now needed a fresh transmission to suit the new power plant. That issue was easily

Right: Fully adjustable bonnet hinges feature gas struts for easier opening

resolved though as, when he was chatting to the late Steve Fletcher at a show, it

workshop, a fresh trans’ tunnel was formed and fitted to fill the bulkhead void and fit

transpired that ‘Fletch’ had just removed the 6-speed T56 manual ‘box from his Woody, and that was a match for the Vortec. A year later, attention turned to the rear axle as what was already there was no longer fit for purpose considering what Steve had in mind. After giving it some thought and digging around, Steve arranged a slot at Hauser Racing to get the axle narrowed. In the end, it was deemed more practical to build a fresh axle, some three inches narrower than the original, with Hausers also sorting out the installation and suspension having dumped the original leaf springs. Whilst the Nova was in the Hauser

around the fresh gearbox. The rear arches were also cut out in readiness for fitting the larger rear wheels Steve had in mind. Steve’s next move was to take the Nova to work for a few weeks while an F100 project moved into his garage at home. He did get that truck finished, only to sell it on for whatever reason and buy another. The upshot of that meant the few weeks he’d initially set aside stretched out to a couple of years, and it was 2019 before the Nova finally returned home. The pedal box situation did get resolved that same year though. With the switch to a manual ‘box three pedals were needed, Steve sorting that

Finishing line

Moving on to 2020, Steve made contact with Dave at the Retro Barn Motor Co in Wolverhampton. The car was relocated there for a full custom exhaust, brake and fuel line installation, wiring and rear tub fabrication and fitment. Steve had also asked Dave to

sort out a few other items and generally get the car over the finish line. To that end, they whipped out the engine and gearbox to paint the bulkhead and refresh the paint on the suspension components. Little did they know that in the meantime Steve had visited Craig at Dyno Torque in Birmingham. It was in all innocence of course, until Steve mentioned the Nova would be on the road in a couple of week’s time. With that Craig

pulled him to one side saying, “I’ve got just the engine for you.” That turned out to be a lighter LS1 V8, together with an Emerald ECU. That immediately went into the back of Steve’s van for delivery straight over to Dave at Retro. Covid and its aftermath slowed down the availability of some parts and, coupled with Steve giving them a list of more and more things to do on the car, 2020 soon disappeared.

The lightweight LS1 engine has been left pretty much as bought, as was the T56 manual ‘box. Aftermarket headers feed the full stainless steel exhaust system fabricated by the Retro Barn Motor Co. For improved drivability, a Fly-by-Wire throttle control has been fitted

“It was very cheap and just needed putting together” Steve got the car back in January 2021 and on 21 June that year, it was finally on the road. Some 13 years after the car rolled out of the paint shop, he was actually behind the wheel and driving it. While the project had thrown up no actual horrors, the build had become somewhat protracted for a variety of reasons. Steve summed it all up perfectly: “It’s a complete reverse-built car that has seen three engines, two gearboxes, coil

spring suspension, air bags then air struts and at least four sets of wheels.” After all that has gone into the build, we were keen to hear Steve’s response when we probed about how the car drives. “It’s getting better all the time. The car’s now got air ride height sensors which sets the suspension to a specific height rather than a pre-set pressure. That works much better and has transformed the ride. I do plan to give the

headlight bezels some attention in the near future, and the interior may get a bit more lairy. That’s all really, unless I change the wheels again…” CC

Out & About

Pure extravagance

Words & Pics: Dave Biggadyke

One of the UK’s longest-running rod runs, hosted by Kings Lynn Kruisers, was held in glorious sunshine at the end of July. While the main focus of the weekend is the Sunday show, nowadays known as the Extravaganza, for many regulars it is a must-do weekender.

The old school approach and atmosphere are a throwback to the eighties when such events were held the length and breadth of the country. The Kruisers aren’t living in the past, though, and the weekend has kept up with the times. Entertainment, a cruise out on Saturday and plenty of laughs combine to make the weekend what it is. On Sunday, the focus shifts to the show, and this is when the event really shines. In years gone by, it was restricted to rods, customs and vans, but those constraints have been lifted. Classics, modifieds, bikes

and so much more are now welcome, with anything embraced by the extravaganza umbrella being made at home. The show attracted more than 300 vehicles, spanning many eras from the late twenties through to the modern day. There was also a special guest welcoming visitors and posing with them for selfies. I confess to not seeing her myself but, as I’ve never watched the Channel 5 TV show Hell on the Highway, I wouldn’t recognise Hayley Obeirnes anyway. I’m sure she was a big hit with a number of show visitors though.

The KLK Extravaganza is all-embracing when it comes to show vehicles. The Escort RS2000 of Steve Carter was placed in the Top Ten

Another name on the list of Top Ten winners was Philip Horn with his ‘68 Moggy van

Another top job by the KLK crew, even more so as it means the club’s charity donations will continue for another year. Well done guys and gals.

The Extravaganza always turns up vehicles rarely seen elsewhere like this pair of Austin hot rods, a ’38 sedan and a ’50 pick-up…

…and even a ’69 Bedford van, a vehicle you could easily think is a nicely restored classic at first glance. There’s more to this sleeper than first meets the eye though

The team from Wisbech Engineering was at the show and selected Mick Dearing’s ’47 Dodge pick-up as their pick of the bunch

Can anything top having your lifelong dream turned into a reality by a close family member you have a special bond with? Words: Dave Biggadyke Pics: Alan Kidd

Despite their back-to-back pose, this is one father and son duo that has tremendous respect for each other

B

ack in 1981, Kevin Barnaby had a warmed-over Mk2 Ford Zephyr and spent many a weekend running it at Santa Pod. Often, he was paired against one of the Z car legends of the era, the Harris brothers, but never managed to card a win. Time moved on and Kevin was on the lookout for a Mk1, but that never became a reality. He came very close on one occasion, but his haulage business always came first. About to seal the deal, one of his lorries broke and the funds had to be diverted to get it back on the road and earning its keep. One thing Kevin did do though, was to introduce his stepson Stuart Laird to colourful character and hot rod builder, the late Dave Haskell. Stuart recalls Kevin’s ulterior motive behind that introduction. “Dad asked Dave to take me on a sort-of work experience basis for a couple of weeks. He guessed I would have had enough by then and I would come back asking him to take me on in the haulage business. But I stayed for about four years and became Dave’s apprentice, during which time he became like a second father to me.” During his stint at Dave Haskell Hot Rods, Stuart had a hand in several notable cars that went through the workshop. Amongst his many other skills and talents, he became very adept with a spray gun and painted Ian Burton’s ’33 sedan and Malc Clarry’s ’32 Standard to name but two. It was that particular skill that ultimately led to Kevin getting the Mk1 he had lusted after for so long. “I was asked to paint an El Camino,” Stuart explained, “the owner of which also happened to have a Mk1 that was surplus to requirements. “A deal was struck whereby I took the car as part payment for the paint job. I then gave it to Dad for his 55th birthday, which was 12 years ago. The plan was to turn it into a strip car, one that would give those Harris boys a run for their money.

The heavily narrowed Ford 8.8 inch rear axle is stuffed with a Moser Engineering diff and internals and was put together by Steve Large. The twin pipes exiting below the bumper perfectly complement the build style of the car

“We had the car blasted and when we got it back, it looked just like a tea bag. Dad’s immediate response was that it was only fit for scrap. I had other ideas though, and told him I would carry on with the build – only with the work it now needed, it was no longer going to be an out-and-out race car. As the project progressed, so did the future plans for it – it just went further and further.”

Inches matter

The first task on the list was to fabricate a fresh chassis, a job that Stuart tackled himself using a combination of 3 x 2 inch box section for the main rails and CDS tube for crossmembers and the multi-point roll cage. At the front, Stuart attached a purpose-built IFS fabricated by Wayne Clark at Oddrods Customs, and out back he hung a Ford 8.8-inch axle located by a 4-bar and Panhard rod. Stuart stretched the wheelbase by locating the rear axle 2 inches further back; this not only centres the wheels in the ‘arches, it also enables the fitting of a rear seat – usually a no-no in a tubbed car. For motivation, Stuart slotted a big block Chevy between the rails, with a TH400 transmission bolted to the back of it. A dual servo brake system was fitted, utilising an under-floor mounted Wilwood master

cylinder, a bulkhead-mounted Wilwood reservoir and a hybrid Wilwood / Camaro pedal. The steering features an Oddrods supplied manual rack, now assisted by a Vauxhall Corsa electric powered column section with the motor mounted upside down behind the dashboard. Dave Haskell had an input with that particular installation, advising Stuart to “mount it wherever it will f***ing fit.” With the underpinnings sorted, Stuart focused on the bodywork, or perhaps the lack of it. I interrupted him listing the panels he’d replaced by asking what of the original car remains. His answer was succinct, “the middle of the roof, B and C pillars, the front scuttle panel and the dashboard are still there. The rest of bodywork has either been replaced or extensively repaired.”

Sign of the Zodiac

Before we get into the full extent of the bodywork repairs, it’s poignant to pause for a moment and reflect on exactly what this car is. The Mk1 Z cars rolled off the Dagenham production line between 1950 and 1956. The Consul was the first model to be introduced and can easily be identified by its rectangular vertical bar front grille. Conversely, the Zephyr front grille is far

Kevin truly is living the dream these days, with Stuart beside him all the way of course

more ornate and not dissimilar in design to the Aston Martin DB2. Initially the cars were badged as the Zephyr Six, simple nomenclature denoting that a straight-six lay under the bonnet. That power plant necessitated the metalwork in front of the bulkhead being 7 inches longer than on the 4-cylinder models, with the wheelbase being 4 inches longer. The icing on the cake, however, came in 1953 with the introduction of the Zephyr Zodiac – a bit like the Capri Ghia of its day. This top-of-the-range model featured a 71bhp high compression engine, two-tone paint and leather upholstery, and gold-plated badges. Although it didn’t look like it after blasting, Kevin’s car is a Zephyr Zodiac which rolled off the production line in 1955. The 69-year-old bodyshell now features a scratch-formed bulkhead, new floors, wheel tubs, fresh inner sill panels and a new rear The Gen IV 454ci big block Chevy had been fully rebuilt when bought, so its internals had been left alone. All Stuart knows is that it’s been stuffed full of gubbins to make it go faster. Externally it’s been treated to a March Performance pulley and belt system, along with polished finned rocker covers and air filter. A fully stainless exhaust system with remote cut-outs fabricated by Zero Exhausts in Ashford deals with waste gases, while an aftermarket radiator, the largest that would fit, handles the cooling duties. The transmission is a TH400 auto’ rebuilt by Alders Automotive in East Sussex

scuttle panel. The rear quarter panels have been stretched to conform to the extended wheelbase and the bottom halves are secured by hidden fixings for easy removal. The ravages of both time and the dreaded tin worm have been put right, the original roof gutters have been removed and replaced with a far more subtle drip rail, and all panels have been gapped with the seams altered to eliminate the wing piping. The metalwork didn’t just stop with what you can see on the outside, either. Inside the Zephyr, the dashboard has been extended and new switch panels and a gauge pod fabricated, and a steering column shroud and parcel shelf were formed from scratch.

Fuel consumption

It will be no surprise to hear that Stuart prepped and painted the body himself. With that done, it was just the simple matter of putting it all back together, but we all know that reality is far from simple. To keep things neat and tidy underneath, the fuel lines run through the chassis rails, with the rolling stock and underbody being fully painted and detailed. One of the last jobs to be done on the car was the wiring, and how very apt that this was handled by Dave Haskell in exchange

Just as you’d expect with a tubbed car, there’s room for little more than a toothbrush in the boot, especially as the Steve Large fabricated ali fuel tank is mounted in there. The boot does provide access to the rearmost lower quarter panel fixings, though

for Stuart putting the paint on Dave’s last full build, the Kaufman family ’34 Tudor. Stuart summed up the build in a few heartfelt words. “I’ve done all the work myself at home with the exception of the exhaust, interior and electrics. Along the journey, I was fuelled by coffee, fags and constant advice from Dave Haskell.”

The Zephyr made its debut at the Mk1 Owner’s Club (Five Stars) show at Battlesbridge in 2023, and we then came across it at the NSRA Supernationals a few weeks later. The Old Warden audience was extremely receptive to the car as it was rewarded with a place in the Top Ten, a performance it repeated a few weeks ago.

The rear light pods are NOS, while glass lenses are original. Stuart recalls the now re-chromed bumper came from something like a Trabant, which he lengthened by 4 inches and mounted so that it tucks into the body. Adding a touch of class is the paint that really pops in the sunshine, the colour being Rolls Royce Wild Berry

It’s not unusual to come across an extinguisher in a Pro Street-style car, but none so stylish as this polished Dunford one that dates back to 1955. Stuart came across it as NOS still in its box, but these days it’s for show only

The custom dash pod is home to the Classic Instruments gauges that are actually a package for a ’57 Chevy, although they look perfectly at home in the Zephyr. Stuart fabricated the part Corsa steering column and finished it off with a hand-formed shroud, and he picked up the wheel during a trip to the States

Out of focus, or a roa d movie ending wit h the heroes drivin a heat haze? Eithe g off in r way, it looks pretty much the same…

“It drives beautifully,” Stuart enthused. “It’s pretty much like a normal car, but it can be as aggressive as you like if you want it to be. It’s clocked up around 1500 miles so far and the only issue has been with keeping the engine cool, but I knocked up an ali radiator shroud to sort that. I also changed the diff from a 3.73 to a 3.07 to help with the cruising mileage, but that won’t help when it goes up the strip which will probably be at the Hot Rod Drags next year. “I’m really pleased with how the car has turned out. Dad has done a lot for me and the Zephyr is my way of giving something back to him.” It’s only fitting that the closing words of this feature come from Stuart’s dad Kevin. “I cannot thank Stuart highly enough for doing such an amazing job with the car.” Touching sentiments from father and son alike. Now, how great would it be to see the Zephyr paired against a member of the Harris family at the drags? CC

“Steve Large, Wayne Clark, Kevin at Zero Exhausts, the Five Stars Owners Club for help in sourcing parts, and an enormous thank you going to the late Dave Haskell – if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have got into hot rods. Mega thanks also to my mum Dee for the constant supply of tea, Kiann and Emmie for losing dad to the garage and my partner Rachel for putting up with all the long nights and weekends when I was working on the car.”

Grand Nationals

■ Words: Gary Noskill ■ Pics: Julian Hunt

A busy few months at Santa Pod saw the Sportsman Nationals, Summer Nationals and Greenlight Nationals sharing the calendar with all the other events at the home of British drag racing

Gary Lake took the Sportsman ET trophy at the Sportsman Nationals in his Trans Am when Darren Huxley red lit in the final

In a pleasing contrast to the weather that has blighted so much of this year’s meetings, Santa Pod managed to stage three Championship events over the summer with just one brief shower of rain to interrupt proceedings. June’s Sportsman Nationals and Summer Nationals were followed up by the

Greenlight Nationals in August, with each even showcasing a huge variety of cars and bikes. We’ll start with the latter, where Eliminations in the Greenlight Nationals saw a lengthy delay on Sunday afternoon after Chris ‘Bois’ Reed’s Super Street Bike lifted its front wheel around half track,

threw him to the ground then carried on to complete the run without him. Thankfully, he was as alright as you can be with fractures to your ribs, shoulder and pelvis, but at the time of writing he’s on course to be racing again at the start of next season. The bike was eventually rounded up and brought back to the pits while Bois was

Steve Clarke got things off to a blistering start at the Sportsman Nats, posting two PBs in quick succession during qualifying in Supercharged Outlaws. Scott Collin bagged a similar brace in the 100e Challenge, though his second PB followed the red light that cost him his chance in the final

The 7.60 Heads Up class saw Belinda Bull post a 7.6001 run at the Sportsman Nats – taking the Hayley Hadfield Perfect ET Award in the process

waiting for his ride on the air ambulance. Ever the racer, he’ll be disappointed that he had already lit a cherry on the tree at the start of his wild ride… Back on four wheels, and back a couple of months to the Sportsman Nationals, after the inevitable rain had got itself out of the way on Saturday morning there were PBs aplenty – including two for Steve Clarke in Supercharged Outlaws. Scott Collin did likewise in 100e Challenge, with

his second coming the following morning – albeit in vain as a red light cost him the final against Matthew Stanley. Elsewhere, Belinda Bull took the Hayley Hadfield Perfect ET Award with 7.6001 on a 7.60 dial in as she stormed to the top of the qualifying ladder in 7.60 Heads Up. And Terry Attree won the Bad Habit Racing Perfect Light Award, supported by Cath and Tig Napier, with a 0.0007 RT in Sportsman ET.

This was another class in which the final was decided by a red light, this one putting the mockers on Darren Huxley’s challenge and handing the win to Gary Lake. Other titles went to Tom Circuit and James Hodson in VW Sportsman and VW Pro respectively, John Sleath in 7.60 Heads Up and Mick Sharpe in Big Bracket. In addition to Stanley’s triumph in the 100e Challenge, further wins went to Steve Matthews in Gasser Circus, Adrian Portelli

Steve Matthews and Honky Tonkin’, his ’57 Chevy, held off the Anglia of Chris Layram to claim the Gasser Circus Crown at the Sportsman Nationals

Australia’s Adrian Portelli took a close-run victory in his Charger over Steve Lloyd’s Impala in the Sportsman Nats’ Nostalgia Superstock final

in Nostalgia Super Stock and Colin Millar in Outlaw Anglia. Three weeks later, the Summer Nationals added Pro Mod to the attractions. Here, Andy Robinson started off as he meant to continue, posting a new PB of 5.8207/245.04 alongside Bobby Wallace in his first qualifying run. The same two cars lined up the following afternoon to contest the final. And it was Robinson who took the honours, this time with 5.8200/245.13. The only name to appear on the top step at both the Sportsman and Summer Nationals was that of James Hodson in VW Pro. Jon Crawford won out in VW Sportsman, while Ben Kennedy prevented Colin Millar from making it two in a row in Outlaw Anglia. Gary Lake, too, fell at the final hurdle while trying to repeat his victory in Sportsman ET, beaten in the final by Peter Walters. Pro ET and Super Pro ET went to Daniel Giles and Paul Hudson respectively, while Gary Carr and Andy Bond took the honours

Colin Millar is never far from the sharp end in Outlaw Anglia. He won the class at the Sportsman and Greenlight Nationals but had to be satisfied with second at the Summer Nats

Mick Sharpe nailed his dial in the Big Bracket final to take victory in Detroit Hustle over Don Scott’s Superbird at the Sportsman Nationals

Andy Bond rarely puts a foot wrong in Street Eliminator, and he won through to the Summer Nationals final where a 7.339 / 206.00 run took the title ahead of Alan McSweeney

Luke Mugridge won the Junior Dragster trophy at the Summer Nationals

in Comp Eliminator and Street Eliminator. Stuart Morrice won it in Super Gas and Luke Mugridge in Junior Dragster, however the Wild Bunch trophy went unclaimed when Phil James suffered transmission issues in the Rampage flopper, Bob Hawkins came up against ignition trouble in his Time Traveller II slingshot and then Rob Brown pulled Rebel to the side of the strip in the semis. Rob was declared the winner for the purposes of the Spirit of Nostalgia Challenge, but with no cars still running the final was uncontested. Things improved at the Greenlight Nationals, with Peter Brown taking the Wild Bunch Crown – though his opponent in the final, Bob Hawkins, was once again put out of the running by a broken car.

Andy Robinson kicked off the Summer Nationals with a 5.8207/245.04 PB in Pro Modified. By the end of the event, he had turned that into a final run of 5.8200/245.13 to defeat Bobby Wallace and take the win

Rob Brown won the Spirit of Nostalgia Challenge at the Summer Nationals by being the last Wild Bunch competitor standing. But when he pulled Rebel over to the side of the strip in the semi-final, the class was doomed to be declared no contest

“Each event showcased a huge variety of cars”

Warren Watts, in the left lane here, red lit at the Summer Nats to lose the Super Comp final to Paul Hudson. But he was back in business at the Greenlights, opening up in Q1 with a new PB

Ben Kennedy’s Outlaw Anglia racer, Relentless, got its name after he vowed to come back from a heavy crash in 2021. It’s well suited, too: after taking outright victory at the Summer Nationals, he was back on it with a pair of PBs at the Greenlights. Colin Millar got the better of him in the final on that occasion, but Relentless is as Relentless does and you just know it’ll be back for more…

John Sleath won 7.60 Heads Up at both the Sportsman Nats and the Greenlight Nats – as well as securing the Perfect ET Award at the latter with a time of 7.6009

By now, the event had seen PBs for Scott Collin (again) in 7.60 Heads Up, Warren Watts in Big Bracket, Simon Gough in Outlaw Flat Four and Ben Kennedy, twice, in Outlaw Anglia. However Colin Millar was to get his revenge on Kennedy in the final as he returned to the top of the podium after his unfamiliar second place at the Summer Nats. Another double went to John Sleath, who this time has the distinction of achieving two perfect ETs in quick succession in 7.60 Heads Up. The first of these, 7.6009 on a 7.60 dial, saw him win the Hayley Hadfield Perfect ET Award for this event – and he was also to emerge victorious in the final when Belinda Bull red lit. Paul Robinson was another one to hand victory to his opponent in the VW Sportsman final, breaking out to repeat his silver medal finish from the Sportsman Nationals as Jake Fronda took the win. Both Joe Kellett and Matt McClure broke out in the Big Bracket final, with the former taking the win, while Kirstie Tramm triumphed in Sportsman ET after Troy Attree rolled the beams. Luke Stevenson was the winner in VW Pro and Darren Shepherd in Outlaw Flat Four, while Andy Robinson added the Greenlight Pro title to his Pro Mod victory at the Summer Nats. A fitting climax to a trio of race meets that brought together a few similarities, a great deal of variety and, mainly, a universal sigh of relief that an incident which could have been very ugly had instead ended up putting a big tick in the event safety box.

Joe Kellett and Matt McClure both broke out in the Big Bracket final at the Greenlight Nationals, with the former breathing the bigger sigh of relief as the numbers worked out in his favour

very now and then, we come across a car that straddles the border between classic and custom. There’s the scale of wild to mild, of course, but on the mild side of mild there are those which are, perhaps, personalised rather than customised. Obviously, the less radical a car is, the less chance it has of appearing on these pages. But when something is as good as Ritchie

Gee’s ’57 Lincoln Premiere, it hardly seems right to start splitting hairs. Though he’s done loads to it, he hasn’t changed anything fundamental – but that’s not the point. The point is that it’s jaw-dropping. It’s also dripping in details, which car builders are forever telling us is where the devil is. If details maketh a kustom, that’s what this is. ‘I remember when I was a schoolboy,’ says Ritchie. ‘I saw this big, blue and white

American car and I thought wow, I’d like to have something like that one day. ‘I know it’s taken a few years! But I certainly do now have something that I always wanted.’ Talking of a few years, the Lincoln was built in 1957 and, coincidentally, was 57th from the end of production for its year. That means it’s now 67 years old – with the last four of them spent as Ritchie’s project car.

You’ve probably heard of the Wildest Cats rock’n’roll weekenders. The man behind them is Ritchie Gee – and after four years of hard graft, now he’s got the car to match Words: Olly Sack Pics: Alan Kidd

A lot has happened in that time, but let’s rewind. The car’s first owner was a sheikh who had it shipped to Kuwait, where it spent its first few years. Then, some time in the early 1960s, it was brought to Britain by the owner of the California Ballrooms in Dunstable. ‘Apparently,’ says Ritchie, ‘he used to cruise down the Kings Road in Chelsea and had “The California Kid” inscribed in 24 carat gold on the driver’s door.’

Jump forward to 1979 and the musical connection cemented a starring role for the Lincoln in the video for one of the year’s most memorable singles. Go to YouTube and check out Milk and Alcohol by Dr Feelgood… you remember the song, almost certainly, but refresh yourself and you’ll see the distinctive shape of a ’57 Lincoln behind the band. You’ll also see that it was pink at the time. That’s how it was when Mr California sold it

on to 1970s’ motorcycle sidecar racer Mick Barton, who used to drive it to race meets, and when he in turn handed over the keys to Jeff Bayly, slap bass player from the legendary rockabilly band Restless.

Rockin’ and a-rollin’

Here’s where Ritchie comes into it. The Teddy Boy culture has been his life, and these days he’s responsible for the Wildest

Below: Having seen a Continental when he was a kid, Ritchie wanted the kit on his Lincoln. He brought it in from Canada then handed it over to Wayne Brown, who modified it to suit the Premiere

The engine, which is original to the car, is a 368ci V8 with overhead valves and 10:1 highcompression pistons. You might well have been expecting a full dress-up kit under here, but instead there are little touches of Ritchie’s own making – a dagger-handled dipstick, for example, and rings in the brake pipe which he wound around a rolling pin

If you don’t like chrome, we can’t be friends. There’s visual drama everywhere you look, and boy is it polished. Restoring and re-chroming it was more of a task than Ritchie was bargaining for, though, as a number of the parts were made from monkey metal

Cats weekenders that pull in teds from far and wide. The two of them go back a long way, and Jeff continues to play slap bass now for the American and European artists Ritchie brings here to perform. Anyway, the story goes back to 2019, when Jeff and Ritchie bumped into each other at a rock’n’roll event in Belfast. Jeff reminisced that he used to love taking the Lincoln out on the road and enjoy having people wave to him and give him the thumbs up as he cruised past, but that was then and this was now – and, truth to tell, the car was needing the love only a new owner could give. The schoolboy Ritchie once was put his hand up and reminded the grown-up version of him of the promise he once made himself. And so the project began. Normally, this is the point where we’d tell you about soul-destroying weeks and months of painstaking welding. Of chopping and channeling, of media blasting, of rust without end. Of seized engines and shot gearboxes, of clapped out interiors and fearof-God electrics. Normally. Then we’d get on to the fun stuff about new trim, fine details and a glory coat fit to make Picasso proud.

“I thought wow, I’d like to have something like that one day” This time it’s a bit different. What Ritchie bought was tired, but it wasn’t a basket case. It wasn’t the sort of car you send off for sand blasting and what comes back is mainly missing. So he was in the main able to skip ahead to the fun stuff. Even then, we’re talking about four years in the making. Quite a lot of that was spent scouring the internet for cool bits, but he got his hands dirty too. Out came the steering box, which was sent away to the States for reconditioning. ‘My lovely girlfriend Rosanna helped me put the box back in the car,’ comments Ritchie, which is the sort of thank-you we don’t normally get people coming out with. He replaced all the steering linkages, idle arms and joints, too, as well as the brake pipe from the master cylinder. ‘I renewed the brake pipe from the master cylinder,’ continues, ‘with three curled rings which I rolled around a rolling pin – a trick I read about in a 1960s’ customising mag from the USA.’ It looks the part, too – you’d think it came out of the factory that way. He also fitted a new external oil pump and had the water pump reconditioned, with a ceramic gland and a three inch long metal

tube pressed into the top of it to eliminate any seepage from the rubber hose. The Lincoln has three radiators and Ritchie had all three reconditioned. ‘I fitted all these myself and I have no leaks.’ There’ll be an engine under the hood, too. It’s a 368ci V8 with overhead valves and 10:1 high-compression pistons, giving it 300bhp – one way in which the Premiere was beefed up for 1957 compared to the ’56 model. Another, and this was the clincher for Ritchie, is that the ’57 had the biggest rear wings of anything Lincoln ever made. If you’re going to do a thing, do it right.

Right or not at all

Now here comes one of those details. ‘The mascot on the bonnet and the trunk really do look something special – 1950s’ car art at its best.’ But this is the mascot from a ’56 – because, once again, you need to do it right or not at all. ‘I found someone in the USA who had the old bonnet and trunk mascot. But they were really pitted. It took me two weeks to rub down the knight’s head – and the star and trunk emblem were in the same condition.

‘After I had finished rubbing it all down until it was ultra-smooth, I then found out that the original mascots were 24-carat gold plated! So I found a company in Birmingham to do this for me. They also took care of all the re-chroming.’ This involved many more hours of work for Ritchie, as he laboured to get parts ultra-smooth for chroming. A number of them turned out to be made from zinc alloy (there are various names for it including zamak in America and Mazak in Britain, as well as monkey metal and pot metal, though the former are product and brand names while the latter are colloquialisms for cheap stuff, often used in prototyping, which is melted down from non-ferrous factory scrap), which added a layer of pressure on top as some versions of this can be prone to breaking down either when the old chrome is being removed or its surface is being polished. Ritchie says simply that this took ‘hours of work.’ Hours which ganged up and became four years, indeed. Obviously he was doing other stuff during this time too, but when he look at the sheer amount of chrome on the

“The mascot on the bonnet and the trunk really do look something special – 1950s’ car art at its best”

Ritchie loved the ’57 Lincoln but didn’t like its standard wind mirrors. Enter stage left Lynn Peterson from Big Time Kustoms in Missouri, who had a set of brand new original jet wing mirrors on his shelf. The gaskets were made up by a 3D printer Ritchie found locally

car you can appreciate why it became such a mammoth task. There’s no better example than the rear bumper, which is to Lincoln’s Continental spec. Once again, this was the realisation of a childhood dream: ‘I remember when I was a schoolboy, I saw a car with a Continental kit. So I found a company in Canada that made one for me, then my panel beater and mechanic Wayne Brown made it perfect.’ It’s definitely not to everybody’s taste, but as with the car’s wings you just can’t help but smile at something so lavishly over the top.

Something else that came over the Atlantic was a pair of Joma rocket fender mirrors. ‘I’ve never liked the shape of standard wing mirrors,’ says Ritchie. ‘So I found a guy called Lynn Peterson, from Big Time Kustoms in the Missouri, who specialises in hot rods and sleds. ‘He told me that he had these ultra special jet wing mirrors in stock, rare as hen’s teeth and brand new – believe it or not, they had been sitting on his shelf for more than 50 years! They weren’t cheap, but I just had to have them.

The seats and door panels were reupholstered in light blue and white Italian leather to go with the paint colour – which, in turn, was a homage to the American car Ritchie saw way back when he was a kid and promised himself that one day he’d have one like that

Ritchie found someone in America that was selling the hood and trunk mascots – though they were badly pitted, so he had weeks of painstaking rubbing down to make them ultra-smooth. As well as the chrome plating here, the knight’s heads (and shoulders) are 24-carat gold plated. Car art at its best, as Ritchie puts it

The Premiere was incredibly far ahead of its time with some of the tech it carried. The Autronic Eye, which picks up other cars’ headlights coming towards you and automatically dips yours, stole a match of about half a century on the matrix LED systems of today. It’s not custom but hell is it cool

‘The rubber boot gaskets were missing, so I contacted a company that does 3D printing and they made up four gaskets complete with a little lip. The same company also came in handy for making rubber gaskets for the door handles.’

Definite ingenuity

There’s some real ingenuity on show here, even if the level of actual customising is as mild as they come (you can certainly picture it on bags, and really that’s about all it would take to make a kustom of it). Same

The original air-con unit is fabulously OTT. A belt-driven Lehigh V-93 compressor powers a massive condensing unit in the trunk. This pumps cold air along two perspex ducts which lead up through the parcel shelf, into the roof and then down through vents into the cabin

deal with the rocker sills trims, which were in a bad way – when Ritchie got the car, believe it or not they were held on with selftappers. ‘I made patterns out of cardboard and took them to a metal fabricating company to be made up in Stainless Steel. At the same time, I also had four stainless steel inner door plates made up.’ His next plan is to have the latter engraved. Since we’re now inside the car, the seats and door panels were reupholstered in light blue and white Italian leather. Ritchie also bought a new original headliner (another

purchase from the US) and, having taken the dash panel completely apart, used three old speedometers to recondition and repair the car’s existing one. The original radio was reconditioned, too, and retuned for UK airways as well as gaining a new electric aerial and, hidden away, a 200-Watt amplifier. ‘Perfect for cruising along listening to Gene Vincent and Crazy Cavan.’ Talking of sounds, in a previous life the Lincoln had a Norelco Auto Mignon record player fitted under its dash. It’s not there any more, sadly, and it sounds fabulously outdated. But everyone keeps talking about the vinyl revival, so who knows… That blue and white interior matches the body, which was taken back to bare metal then finished in a glorious two-tone colour scheme: Diamond Pearl White for the roof and rear fins, and a fine metallic special mix blue on the rest of the car. ‘I didn’t want the standard ’57 Lincoln Seascape colour,’ says Ritchie. ‘I wanted something that would stand out more, and boy it certainly does.’ More white comes from the tyres, which are radials – and, says Ritchie, you can really feel it in how much better they hold the road. Three star jet hubcaps don’t add grip but they’re definitely cool – as are the windows, all of which were replaced with 6mm greentinted laminated glass. To be fair, everything about the car is cool. Every part, every detail, the whole car itself and indeed its owner. What if it’s raining, we asked him when we were planning our photoshoot; ‘It’s fine,’ was the answer. ‘Just so long as my quiff doesn’t get wet.’ This is a man who’s lived and breathed the Teddy Boy lifestyle and shows no sign of getting boring with age. In fact, you get the impression that having the Lincoln as his ride after all these years of graft has given him a new lease of life. It may be milder than mild, it may just be details and paint, it may not even be a custom car at all in your eyes. But this glorious, glamorous leviathan is more than just a resto – and no way just an exhibit to be sniffed and judged by crusty old experts. Just like a rod or a custom should be, it was built to be driven – and Ritchie is loving life doing exactly that. CC Thanks to Marshall and John at Funland Hayling Island for the use of their car park as a lcoation for our photos. Funland is at funland.info – and it’s also home to Hayling Hotrods at the Beach, a monthly summer meet-up organised by Glenn Blake, where Ritchie’s Lincoln is now a regular sight

Eighth Amendment It takes guts to expand a highly successful one-day event into a full three-day weekender, but that’s what the guys behind the MPH Vintage Sprint did. And they did it with style… The peace and tranquillity of the Northamptonshire countryside was once again shattered when the MPH Vintage Sprint rolled into town at the end of June. This time round though, the rumble of V8s reverberated through the air for a full three days. Following the success of last year’s inaugural one-dayer, Deenethorpe Airfield played host to a whole weekend of hot rod indulgence.

Friday was arrival day, with people chilling out and cars getting scrutineered. Things were more serious on Saturday as the cars took to the eighth-mile sprint track. No times were recorded though, as this was all about the bragging rights for crossing the finish line first. Pairings were either random, decided by whoever happened to pull alongside at the start line, or by privately arranged grudge matches. The latter added more weight to

Many scores were settled in friendly grudge races, like this one between Colin Ayres in wife Sue’s ’37 cabriolet and Mick Harle in his ’35 coupe, another fresh build

the bragging rights, but only for those who were triumphant. The scene changed again on Sunday, with the track being transformed into a display area with plenty to suit all tastes. Our man behind the lens, Tog, summed up the expanded event perfectly. “It was a most enjoyable weekend, well organised and had a good atmosphere with lots of smiling faces. Topping that off was the excellent pizza wagon.” Says it all really.

Dave Cox was putting his freshly completed ’32 3-window coupe through its paces. Sadly, his enjoyment was short-lived due to a broken valve spring

In an all Originals pairing, Mark Gee in his ’32 coupe takes on the Chinese Bandit Topolino with Arron Haywood at the wheel

Sunday best

With racing confined to Saturday, the track was transformed into a static exhibition area for Sunday. Some of the cars that ran the previous day stayed on, with others turning up just for the show. The result was a mix of hot rods, customs, vans, American muscle and classics, and so much more. A fitting finale to MPH Vintage Sprint II.
