John Rowley Long-standing hot rodder John Rowley passed away at the end of March. John was proper old school, very clever and mechanically talented. He was also an all-round good bloke and a true salt of the earth. Best known for the Austin Dorset he built a good few years ago, John will be missed by many but fond memories of him will live on. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP John.

Craig Breedlove NORMAN CRAIG BREEDLOVE SENIOR, the first person to surpass speeds of faster than the 400, 500 and 600 mph speed marks, has died peacefully aged 86. His hunt for speed began in 1955 when aged 18 he rebuilt a ’34 coupe and ran 152.80mph on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Progressing to jet power Breedlove went on to become a five-time World Record setter. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Craig.

Pete Edwards STALWART OF THE NORTHERN HOT ROD SCENE and a true gentleman, Pete Edwards has passed away. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Pete and he would always go out of his way to help, whether that be as part of the NHRC or NSRA Blue Crew, or simply as a friend. Pete will be remembered for always smiling and laughing, along with his love of a cuppa. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Pete.

Steve Bird STEVE BIRD HAS PASSED AWAY peacefully following an 18-month battle with brain cancer. Steve will be fondly remembered for many things, most notably his blown ’32 Ford pick-up that graced the cover of the February ’05 issue, the miles he covered and the speeds at which he drove it, his willingness to help others and, of course, his colourful language. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Steve.

Being given a free hot rod to ride around in sounds like the ultimate dream. But when you have to give it back afterwards, there’s only one thing to do

O

ne day in 2016, Graham Solomon was pottering in his front garden when he heard the unmistakeable rumble of a V8. It might not have been mistakeable to everyone who potters in their garden (we know of somebody who thought their neighbour was mowing his lawn when it was in fact the sound of a Lamborghini warming up), but Graham is a man who knows a V8 when he hears one. ‘I first got interested in “different” cars back in the early 70s in Ipswich, where I was living, as there were lots of American cars driving around due to the air bases in the area,’ he explains. ‘But for me, after passing my driving test it was to be Dad’s Vauxhall Viva HC – a car I bought off him and kept until it rusted away in the mid-90s.’ There wasn’t much ‘different’ about a Viva back then, except perhaps that his one lasted so long. But Graham was keeping his eye in. ‘I used to buy all the mags back in the day – Custom Car, Hot Car, Street Machine etc. And I used to go to Santa Pod with my brother in law Bob quite a lot.’ So when he heard that V8 rumble, it immediately had his full attention. ‘I looked up and a purple Ford Pop came in to view,’ he remembers. But it’s what happened next that made that day in 2016 into such a very special one. ‘Much to my surprise, it pulled into my driveway! And then to my even greater surprise, out jumped Bob. He was home on holiday from abroad, where he was working, and had just bought the car from a dealer near Chelmsford.’

Halcyon Days

Bob wasn’t there just to show off his new toy. He remembered those halcyon days at the Pod too. And his by now ex brother in law was part of his plan. ‘It was great fun driving around in a hot rod for the first time as a passenger,’ says Graham. ‘But when he was due to go back abroad, he asked me: “If I put you on the insurance, would you drive it round the block now and again?” ‘Obviously, I needed time to think it over. About one millisecond was enough…’ That was good, but it got better. ‘Later, he said it was fine for me to take it to a few local meets. So we started going to Great Yarmouth and meeting up with the East Coast Pirates on the sea front. The car created a lot of interest, as it was the Pop built by Edd China for the TV programme Wheeler Dealers.’ Not a bad little nugget

of provenance to drop in at the end, that… though we have no doubt that people would have loved it anyway, TV star or not. But all good things come to an end. ‘Now retired, Bob moved back to the UK and reclaimed his car. So we were left with a Pop-shaped hole in our lives.’ Now, here’s where the year 2016 comes back into the story. That was when Karl Bell finished work on a 1956 Ford 103e Popular of his own, built on a Charlie Pop chassis and powered by a Rover V8 running a Borg-Warner 35. It went on to be owned by first Derek Cope and then Paul May, both of whom did more to it – though Graham says that by the time it came up for sale at St Andrews Autos in Chelmsford, coincidentally the same place Bob’s car had come from, it had never actually been on the road. Graham was just the man to put that right. Well, first he had to buy it, but with that minor formality taken care of he and his wife Bridget were no longer Popless.

Halcyon Days

As we’ve just mentioned, what he got was a 1956 Ford 103e packing a Rover V8. The venerable 3528cc Buick lump is not exactly

‘Bob moved back to the UK and reclaimed his car. So we were left with a Pop-shaped hole in our lives’ the liveliest thing in the world in standard form, but it’s known for its tuneability and with a Holley 390 carb, Mallory distributor, MSD Street Fire Ignition Control, stainless steel headers and side-exit exhaust, this one’s a fine example of that. Behind it, the Borg-Warner 35 runs a B+M Quicksilver ratchet shifter. This version of the ubiquitous auto box originally ran without an external oil cooler, but with a V8 on its case Karl drilled his to take one. The back axle is a narrowed Volvo 240, while up front Ford Cortina Mk3 hubs have been drilled out to the 5-stud Ford pattern. Disc brakes are fitted all round, and the whole lot is hung on a chassis whose front and rear ends were custom made by Charlie Pop. Said rear end runs a rose-jointed four-link set-up, with Gaz coilovers taking the strain all round. Charlie Pop also fitted the vehicle’s body, which is almost all steel – only the rear wings

are made of fibreglass. Talking of glass, the side windows have been properly smoked, not tinted with film. The devil is in the detail. Talking of details, there’s a lovely touch inside the cabin. Mounted ahead of that B+M shifter is a Radiomobile MW/LW period radio. And not just any old Radiomobile period radio, either – it’s only the actual one from the old Viva that was Graham’s first ever car. ‘Ideal for Radio Caroline on 648khz, plug plug!’ Elsewhere inside the Pop is a pair of seats from a Mini (a modern one, not the Issigonis original), along with a set of instruments from Omega Kustom, a GPS speedo and, where you might fondly have imagined there would be a rear bench, a flip-up lid for the battery and kill switch.

Sensible Range

The same can be said of the boot, which houses a 10-gallon alloy fuel tank. This

10-gallon stainless steel fuel tank lives in the boot, on a sole occupancy basis

allows a sensible cruising range, or a less sensible having fun range. ‘The car drives really well,’ says Graham. ‘It tracks nice and straight, keeps up with traffic and returns about 20mpg if a light right foot is used. If not, this drops to about 15mpg.’ We suspect that might happen every now and again… ‘We are the first to have it on the road and so far have racked up about 1500 miles,’ Graham continues. ‘We meet up with the East Coast Pirates at the Joyland American Diner in Great Yarmouth a couple of times a month and have done a couple of the Knuckle Busters meets at Stonham Barns, where we were interviewed by John Price!

Those tyres are 165/80R15 Toyos at the front and 255/70R15 Hercules at the back. That paint is Audi Beryl Green. And that body was fitted by Charlie Pop; it’s almost all steel, with just the rear wings being made of ‘glass

‘We also did the Sizewell Classic Vehicle show in 2022 and much to our surprise we won the public vote for “Vehicle I would like to take home.” People seem to really like this Pop and we get plenty of comments wherever we take her. They love the colour, the paint quality and also the fact that it has not been messed about with too much.’ Since you asked, the paint in question is Beryl Green. Sounds like a character from a Carry On movie, but in fact it’s an Audi colour, and it’s been applied beautifully. So now Bob has his Pop, and Graham has his Pop, and you can guess the rest. Graham simply says his plans for the future

are ‘more of the same please – sunny days and car shows, you can’t beat it!’ We can all agree with that. And we suspect that from time to time, if you see this distinctive Pop on display there may well be a very well known purple one parked right beside it.

Thanks “I’d like to thank my wife Bridget, she’s as keen as me to take Beryl out for a spin, to Lee Effeny for his enthusiasm in all matters hot rod, to Alice Fairhead for the ‘photoshoot great fun. And to my old mate Bob for the loan of his Pop which started all this”

GOOD FRIDAY AGREEMENT ■ Words and pics: Dave Biggadyke

F

or many people, Wheels Day is as much a part of Easter as a chocolate egg and lasts far longer. This year was up there as one of the best of them and, following days of inclement climates in the run-up to the Bank Holiday weekend, the weather gods were in an agreeable mood on the day itself. Rushmoor Arena was buzzing from the very off, with the sheer volume of traffic descending on the venue at the same time inevitably causing some delays in accessing the site. That was nothing more than a minor inconvenience though and the guys and gals from Surrey Street Rodders and associated helpers did a sterling job keeping things moving, albeit a little slowly at times. Hats

This year was up there as one of the best of them

off to each and every one of them, especially as they put in all that time and effort for free to provide a great day out for everybody – raising a considerable amount of money for charity along the way. Around 1200 vehicles representing all genres of ‘interesting motoring’ were on display and it was immediately evident that the quality was of a very high standard. Spare a thought for the judging panel who really had their work cut out in compiling a list of winners embracing the

broad spectrum of potential candidates. Those winners are pictured here, with the exception of Daryl Mills’ ’76 Cadillac Eldorado (Classic American Pick) and Top Ten winners Adrian Malthouse (Mini Cooper), Becky Mealyer (VW Lupo) and Adam and Paul Stevens and Nathan Dixon (’61 Dennis Fire Engine). We did say the spectrum was broad. John Price and Nitro FM and Radio Caroline’s Rob Ashard kept everyone informed and entertained, and Surrey Street Rodder presented cheques totalling more than £3000 during the day. Everyone we spoke to was in agreement that Wheels Day was a great way to kick off the Easter Weekend and herald the beginning of the 2023 show season. CC

ormed in 1909, the Hupp Motor Car Company was a star that shone briefly but brightly in the American motor industry of the inter-war years.Building a reputation as a maker of cars that were basic and affordable but very well made. Backed up by one of the first warranties in the business, the Hupmobile 20 started to find homes almost as soon as the company had been founded. Two years later it was followed by the 32, one of the first vehicles anywhere in the world to be built using an all-steel body. Sadly, though, none of the engineerings leading the project thought to patent it. How different today’s automotive landscape might have been but for that oversight… With Ford and Chevrolet selling far more than Hupp could ever hope to, in 1925 the

company’s executives decided to pursue a new strategy. This would see it pursuing a more lucrative market for premium cars, powered by six and eight-cylinder engines as opposed to the four-pots it had previously used. This saw a radical transformation in the company’s design language. The 20 and 32 bore more than a passing resemblance to Ford’s Model T – but for its new Model K, which featured a large wooden frame wrapped in sheet metal, the company hired a young unknown by the name of Raymond Loewy to look after its styling. Loewy, who went on to become famous for his work with Studebaker, had arrived in America in 1919 after serving throughout the war in the French army. At the time of his Hupmobile engagement, he had

just started receiving commissions as an industrial designer; other work at around the same time included a Gestetner duplicating machine and the iconic Sears Coldspot fridge, as well as a range of streamlined ‘torpedo’ locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Model K was his first foray into car design – and for Hupp, it was transformative.

Swooping Panels

Nicknamed the ‘Cyclefender,’ the new Hupmobile Model K was an eye-catching sedan whose swooping panels and sky-high waistline became synonymous with 1930s’ America. It ticked every box, but there was a problem. Hupp already had a loyal customer base among people who bought four-cylinder cars; the Model K, however good it might have

JUNE 2023 CUSTOM CAR 27

6pp Hupmobile.indd 27

27/04/2023 21:49

been, was like Vauxhall putting a V8 in the Omega. Which it did, and guess how many people bought one… Abandoning its existing clientele was ultimately to be the mistake that brought down Hupmobile. The company soldiered on until 1939, even buying the tooling for the Cord 810 in a bid to recreate that vehicle’s unique style in a more affordable package, but the damage had been done. Production came to an end a few days before the outbreak of WWII. What this all means is that a late Hupmobile is a very rare thing. Not many were made in the first place; most people know the name, even if it’s only as a result of being forced to read John Betjeman’s poetry at school, but far fewer have ever even seen one. And fewer still have seen one like this. A Hupmobile today is quite the commodity; those that are still in working order tend to

be in the hands of collectors, and none are really suitable for any kind of normal use on our modern roads. But for a few very, very rare exceptions. And this is one of them.

Mob Rule

It’s known as ‘The Gangster.’ You can probably see why. It’s a customised ’33 Model K whose unique body is still recognisable from Loewy’s original design – but now wouldn’t look out of place in the hands of Al Capone or Charles ‘Lucky’ Luciano. Large, powerful and robust, vehicles such as the Model K (which has a massive wheelbase of 121 inches) had everything a mobster could hope for in a car. Their speed made them ideal for getaways; their interior space made them ideal for shootouts; and their massive trunks made them ideal for disposing of corpses, or people who were soon to become one.

The ’28 Cadillac Sedan was a favourite of Al Capone, the Lincoln Continental Mark III and the Ford Model 18 V8 are all classic examples of the gangster style in 1930s’ cars. In fact, organised crime gave birth to some of the original modding, way back before hot rods were invented, with Al Capone famously kitting out his Cadillac with police radios, thick glass to protect his mob from gunfire and cut-out ‘peepholes’ to use when firing upon enemies with their tommy guns. Thankfully, the Gangster is customised for much friendlier activities! It’s owned by California native Antonio Lopez, who purchased the vehicle around 25 years ago in the sort of deal that will make you jealous. ‘I got the Hup for $8000 in a trade for a ’48 Chevy Fleetline,’ he tells us. ‘I kept the car for a few years and during that time we were offered a ’39 Chevy and a ’58 Impala for it.’

You do see Hupmobiles with visors, when you see them at all. This one is definitely not a factory accessory, unless you’re talking about the Gangster Factory. The top-hinged windshield is original spec, though – and with some work on the surround it’ll be looking that way too

Famed designer Raymond Loewy penned the Hupmobile’s stately front end, only to come back a couple of years later with a steeply sloping grille for the ’34 Model K Aerodynamic. The extra driving lamps are ideal for dazzling the Feds at roadblocks; the extravagent horn trumpets are original but look right at home with the car’s new image

That’s got to be one of the coolest hood ornaments of all time. Below it, the level of detail in the Hupmobile badge defies belief

Plenty of stowage room for your own personal arsenal (or for fellow Bad Guys who you’ve just used it to ventilate)

Inside, it’s largely original. Gangster rather than Gangsta, you might say. No peepholes for tommy guns, though This was an even better deal. So Antonio traded the Hup – on the condition that he and his wife would get have first refusal should its new owner ever decide to sell it in the future. He didn’t have to wait long, because three years later he got the call. The Hup’s owner wanted to sell – and Antonio wasted no time in buying it back. Of course, being more than 70 years old meant the car wasn’t exactly road-friendly. So Antonio and some of his friends put their heads together to see what magic they could create. Antonio’s sons joined in, too – which is where things get interesting, because they have a custom shop called Barn Yard Customs. The first area to address was the outdated parts. Just a few small things were needed, like an engine, drivetrain and suspension, otherwise it wouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

So out came the 228ci straight-six L-head. In its place, Antonio dropped in another six-pot, a Chevy 250ci dating from 1969. Dishing out 155hp in standard form, which is more than half as much again as the original, this was mated to a five-speed tranny from an ’82 Camaro. The wheels it turns are custom 16-inchers shod with Remington whitewalls.

Close To The Ground

You’ll have noticed that the Hup sits low on these. That’s because the semi-elliptical leaf springs that once held it up have been cast into a scrap bin somewhere and replaced by a ’77 Mustang front clip and airbags all round. No 1930s’ mobster ever rode so close to the ground, but even with its entirely peaceful intent the car looks meaner than anything Al Capone ever rode in. Inside, it’s largely original. Gangster rather than Gangsta, you might say. No peepholes

for tommy guns, though. The seat and door trims have been redone, with new mohair skins being applied by California Upholstery, but that apart the only mod here was the addition of a modern sound system mating a Sony head unit and a 100W amp to a Kenwood speaker array and a pair of Bazooka bass tubes. So if you happen to be in Antonio’s neighbourhood one of these days, you’re most likely to hear his coming before you see him… but when you see him, he definitely won’t be keeping a low profile. It could be said that with its lavish lines and huge proportions, not to mention suicide doors already fitted as standard, the Hupmobile Model K was made to be rodded. The only problem being that by and large, it wasn’t made at all. The Gangster may look mean but really it’s just there to be noticed – and being based on such a rarity makes it more noticeable than ever.

Above: Antonio has detachable fender skirts to make the Hup look more sinister than ever. We didn’t check to see whether they’re bulletproof

Below: Original leaf springs have gone and the Hup now rides on air with a Mustang front clip. Anything other than whitewalls would look like negligence here

Above: California Upholstery was called in to redo the fabrics inside, finishing off the seats and door cards in a very period-feeling beige mohair. You can just about make out the Sony head unit here – it feeds out to the world via a 100W Kenwood amp and twin Bazooka bass tubes

TROG Flabob Airport Drags ’23

SoCal Diaries I

Former Custom Car editor Tony Thacker lives in California these days, and this month he’s been enjoying the sound of flatheads…

Brit Jay Dean, owner of Nostalgia Ranch in Fallbrook, California, is an avid racer in the Hop Up Special, his Offenhauser-equipped, flathead-Ford-powered ’25 T. Unfortunately, Jay cracked a cylinder wall in the semi

t seems like only moments ago that we were attending the last and first Flabob Airport Drags, organised by Race of Gentlemen creator Mel Stultz. The December ’22 event was killer, no doubt due to a lot of pent-up desire left over from the pandemic. People wanted to take their rods out and play with them – simple as that. To have another event in less than six months might have been pushing it in the jaded Los Angeles market. But despite some heavy rain just a couple of days prior, the sun shone on Mel and his team. Things were a little different this year with many of the show cars parked outside the main area, a smaller swap meet and very few vendors – but a lot of traditional hot rods racing. Mel said 250 had signed on and I have to think there were probably 200 on site – and they put on an inspiring, non-stop show. Racers came from as far north as Portland, Oregon and Washington State – and in the case of Stefan Immke, all the way from Cologne, Germany. I have to hope this event becomes annual and as we went to press, TROG announced dates for their signature Wildwood, New Jersey event. The beach race that started it all is scheduled for 29 Sept to 1 Oct this year. You can learn more at www.theraceofgentlemen.com.

It doesn’t get much tuffer than the heavily hammered, louvered, Elmer Speed Equipment ’34 3-window powered by a Jimmy-blown Hemi riding on pie crusts and 12-spokes

The boys from Bedlam are a very active car club in Los Angeles and this shiny black ’31 riding on Deuce rails and whitewalls is the property of Alex MacDonald

Old race cars continue to surface and somebody was the lucky finder of this original ’27 T Roadster sitting on an A frame and powered by a set-back Olds just visible under the cowl

This tri-carb’d flathead-powered Deuce Roadster appeared to be another mash up of parts from its DuVall-style split windshield down to its channelled body

This original Navarro-headed, flathead-powered belly tank found in Brooklyn, New York, is owned by TROG creator Mel Stultz. While it ran, it was unsuited to running on a strip and really needed pushing off. Looked cool though

Stefan Immke came all the way from his home in Cologne, Germany to race his rail job prepared by Jay Dean of Nostalgia Ranch. The Offy-quipped flathead is equipped with a very early Hilborn fuel injection unit and won the dragster class

Lots of ladies find the 1/8-mile drags something they can enjoy and here is owner Kim McCullough, Vice-President of Marketing for Jaguar Land Rover. This historic Deuce was last seen at the Grand National Roadster Show

They say you can’t have too much patina, whoever they are, and this ’30-’31 Model A coupe had it in spades from the missing roof down to the checked firewall. Headlight had to be removed for racing

Looking more street or resto rod than yer average TROG racer, this full-fendered ’32 3-window nevertheless smoked the tires and hauled ass when the flag went down

Although seen by many as the ugly duckling of the late-thirties Fords, I’m kinda partial to the ’38 and I particularly like Ford’s treatment of the grille bars

Shades of the ‘Happy Days’ TV show in the far lane and I believe that was the original roadster pickup up against that Jimmyblown, flathead-powered ’32 5-window from the Thunderbolts Car Club of Sacramento, California

Getting a little smoke from those cross-plys, this ’34 3-window was powered by a 346ci 42 Series Cadillac flathead V8 that had a G for Government designation – as fitted to a lot of WWII tanks, including the British CPT 20

Another lady racer is Stacie Depner who gives it her all in her quad-carb’d, Chevypowered primered Model A Roadster on Deuce rails with whitewalls on chrome reverse rims

A ’30-’31 Model A coupe body on a Deuce frame is not all that unusual. The use of the pressed steel ’32 truck grille is perhaps not so common but here the combo looks good

Scallop-style paint jobs are not something you see every day, especially in this style, but they work on this Hemipowered A-bone featuring pinstriping by the legendary Harpoon

Tom Branch gets off hard in his deeply channelled Deuce Roadster ‘El Dorado’, powered by a rare ’63 304ci Studebaker V8 fitted with an even rarer Spencer intake and four ‘backdraft’ Studebaker Stombergs Those wot know will know the name M&V Automotive who built this Model A roadster pickup back in the sixties. Second owner ‘Hudson’ Joe christened it ‘Hanoi Hustler’ in honor of original owner Ed Woodward, who was drafted to Vietnam in ’63

Lots of neat work on this four-cylinder banger-power T-modified from the punched out aluminium grille insert to the lightened I-beam, the wide-bolt Ford wheels and the traditional scallop paint

Brit Simon Gluckman was racing his chopped ’32 5-window and having a lot more luck and fun than he did at the Mooneyes New Year’s Party. Unfortunately, he did blow the V-belts off his Jimmy-blown 324ci Olds

Right: As featured in Hot Rod Magazine, Troy Ladd, owner of Hollywood Hot Rods, was there racing his Jimmy-blown, Hemi-powered Model A coupe built in about 21 days. With a six-pack of Stromberg 97s, the coupe was hooking up Right below: It’s a 1000-mile haul – each way – from Portland, Oregon to Riverside, California. Nevertheless, Estranged Car Club member Robbie Davis brought his ‘as found’ ex-drag racing ’32 Tudor ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ but was dissuaded from pulling wheelies

I’m partial to T-modifieds and this stunning example powered by a Navarro-equipped flathead was built by Mike Santiago for Paul Reichlin. And I’m loving that ’37 smiley axle and the plated Whippet grille

Kris Henderson spent years on a mission to see it hit 200mph out of a Mk1 Jaguar – while all the while keeping it on the street Words and pictures Tony Thacker

kies were grey with smog. People were grey with nicotine. Even the cars were grey. In fact, life in fifties’ Britain was pretty grey all round. However, in 1955 a ray of sunshine appeared in the shape of the new Jaguar Mark 1 saloon. This was powered by 2.4 or 3.4-litre twin-cam straight sixes based on the XK120 sports car engine. In 1956, The Motor magazine ran a 3.4 up to 119.8 mph; the car was loved by cops, robbers and racecar drivers such as Sir Stirling Moss, Tommy Sopwith, Roy Salvadori. Mike Hawthorn, too, though tragically he was to die in his. He wasn’t looking for one, but Kris Henderson found his Mk1 in the Oklahoma

City Trader Post in 1987 for a mere $800. Back then, it was powered by a Chevy six and Kris drove it that way until Hot Rod magazine’s ‘Dare to be Different’ campaign inspired him to turn the ‘Jagrolet’ into a street legal race car. His ride at the time was a ’73 Vega wagon powered by a 327/Turbo 400 combo. He quickly pulled this and readied it for install into the Jag along with the Vega’s gauges, shifter and rims. Kris, meanwhile, was teaching high school auto mechanics. And along with his high school friend Ray Nelson, who built dirt track cars, they fabbed a full-tube chassis. Up front, Kris fitted it with salvaged early Mercury Capri struts and a home-made four-link system.

The Jag has had at least ten different engines, not including the original. It first hit 200mph powered by a 572ci big block; the current unit is a 6.0-litre LS with twin 78mm turbos

Far Left: The Jag panels are hung on a full tubular chassis, which up front supports a custom four-link suspension set-up running salvaged early Mercury Capri struts Left: Built on a very tight budget, the Jag runs a 12-bolt GM rear axle with 4.11 gears which Kris picked up at a swap meet for just $250

Kris was on a tight budget, so pretty much everything was found in salvage yards or at swap meets. For example, the 12-bolt GM rear axle with 4.11 gears was picked up at a swap meet for just $250. In total, Kris built Jaguar gen 1 for a mere $4000 and its best ET was 11.70, or 11.20 on nitrous. In 1994, the 327 was replaced with a 350 which, with N2O, turned a credible 9.89/137 mph. In 2003, Kris drove in the Hot Rod Power Tour from Nashville, TN to Fort Worth, TX and the following year decided to try his hand at land speed racing at Maxton, NC. First time out, with 2.56 rear end gears, he went 159mph and 172 with nitrous. Kris returned to Maxton for several years trying to break 200mph but failed. Determined to break that barrier, he installed twin turbos

and bumped his speed to 182mph. Then, with a 400hp N2O, he went 189mph but melted two pistons.

Close But No Cigar

He wasn’t done yet though, and with the help of his friend Daryl White he built a 572ci Chevy that made 850hp naturally aspirated. That combo went 195 mph at Maxton – close, but still not the magic 200 he was looking for. Then in 2011, Kris participated again in the Hot Rod Power Tour, completing 1100 miles. With a 5.3-litre LS and a single turbo, he turned 11.20s. Unfortunately, Maxton was closed and the ECTA moved its operation to Wilmington, NC. There, with a 150 shot of N2O, the 572 finally

went 204mph. After 10 years of trying, Kris had finally made it into the 200mph club. He also raced the Arkansas Mile at Blytheville Aeroplex, where at the first event he exceeded 200mph again. Meanwhile, at Beech Bend Raceway he ran 9.50/150mph in the quarter. Over the years, the Jaguar has been powered by a variety of Chevy engines from the original straight six through a 283, two different small-journal 327s, a 350 with N20, a 6-71 blown 350, a 400, a 572 big block, a 5.3 LS with a single 78mm turbo and a 6.0 LS with twin 78mm turbos. His plan now is to drive from his home south of Nashville, Tennessee to Blytheville, AR, run the Arkansas Mile – and, of course, go 200mph. We have no doubt he will. Does this look like the sort of car you could built for $4000? Kris bought it for $800 just over three and a half decades ago and embarked on a journey that reached its goal when he hit 204mph at Wilmington

Nationals treasure Despite the best efforts of the weather prior to the event, the re-scheduled Springspeed Nationals offered a golden opportunity for racers

A

side from one of the Bug Jams of old, we can’t recall too many instances in Santa Pod’s history when an event has had to be re-scheduled due to weather. Or one when there has been no camping available to the public due to waterlogged fields, or one when the organisers have had to dramatically alter the running sheet at the last minute. But such was the fate of the 2023 STP Springspeed Nationals. Re-scheduled to 7-9 April (the original date of the Festival of Power), only without the Pro Mods, Top Fuel, Nitro and Nostalgia Funny Cars or jet cars that were on the original event card, it was a very different line-up. Having made that difficult decision, the Pod crew must have had their hearts in their mouths when they woke to yet more rain on the Thursday test day. But by 2.30, the track was dried and conditions improved from there on in, remaining chilly in the mornings but dry and warming nicely each day – before the heavens opened again on the Monday after the racers had packed up and left. The end result was a packed entry

■ Words: Mike Pye Pics: Julian Hunt

‘Huge thanks to all the Pod team for pulling a great weekend out of a very soggy bag’ card of some 270+ racers and some superb racing (including a packed card of bike classes, though space dictates we leave coverage of those to the two-

wheeled magazines). Huge thanks, as always, to all the Pod team, especially the track crew, for pulling a great weekend out of a very soggy bag.

STRANGER BUT TRUE Things went a bit pear shaped after we put Steve Hall’s Pro Mod ’55 on the cover of the June 2014 issue, and the car later came up for auction. Fresh from a full rebuild at ARRC, and now named Stranger Thing, David Smith is behind the wheel of the beautiful Pro Mod. Smith started easy with a 14.47 licensing pass on the Saturday, but screwed that down to 9.051 / 100 by the end of the day – which proved his best pass of the weekend. We’ve no doubt a lot was learned

Pic: David Smith

and we’re looking forward to seeing the team’s progression this year.

ModUrStang Pro ET With 45 entries, it was always going to be a fight for the 32-car break. But that didn’t put off ex-Junior Dragster driver Jess Bishop, who bagged a perfect ET award (9.110 / 153 on a 9.11 dial) and made it to the semis on her debut in the class in the ex-Allan Schofield Nightmare II dragster. Another new entry from the Junior Dragster ranks was 16-year-old Harley-Jay Darby, whose first full pass in dad Lee’s Chevy 3100 netted an impressive Dave Rudd but too quick 8.786 / 155 (on a 10.00 dial in), leaving him as an elated alternate. Other rookies to mention are Stevie Gates in the 540ci Plymouth Duster and Jack McClure in his golden 350ci Ford 100e, as well as the extraordinary Rednek Redemption 460ci V8-powered Mk2 Golf van of Jake Fronda. A number of Nostalgia Superstockers also came out to play and Adrian Portelli nailed his Charger to the tree early on with a 10.817 / 123 on a 10.80 dial in, securing the number one spot in qualifying one. Behind him were Chloe Wilkins, Bob Molden and 29 others, including 2022 champion Brett Featherstone, right down in the number 31 spot, with Dan Holloway happily bringing up the rear having run his first eight in the Rattler Altered (8.964 / 149 on a 9.00 dial in) before a holed block ended his weekend’s fun. The top three positions were traded back and forth throughout qualifying Harley-Jay Darby between Bishop, Portelli, David Rudd, Darby (now with a more appropriate 8.82 dial in), Marc Huxley and Stuart Thompson in the NSS Duster, and going into eliminations the top 12 were all within 0.01 seconds of their dial ins. Seasoned campaigner Leigh Morris cut it closest of all to the wire, just squeaking through into eliminations in the final session and leapfrogging from 35 to 12 with a 10.018 / 133 pass on a 10.01 dial in. After that, he never looked back, going all the way to the final via Darren Huxley (break out), Wilkins (red light), Don Scott (holeshot) and Tom Watkins (red light), before beating Neill Watkins (10.357 / 113 on a 10.04 vs 11.292 / 114 on an 11.27) to Dan Holloway clock up an incredible 27th event win in the class. Mackenzie Love

The Junior Dragsters kicked off proceedings on the Friday morning with a massive entry of 30 cars, including newcomers Emmy Crundwell and Emilie Moore. Kai Cooper set the pace from the start, qualifying in number one position with a perfect light, and in qualifying two Richard Wilcox clocked the first 0.00 reaction time in the class. Ada Casisi then made a late charge into the number three position in the last round of qualifying. Emilie Moore The big Emmy Crundwell surprise, though, was 2021 champion Harry Redshaw who, after cutting four red lights in the early stages, Ada Casisi proceeded to make his way up the ladder and then carve through the field, despatching Ellie May Brown (holeshot) in round two, Max Taylor (red light) in round three, Luke Mugridge (break out) in round four and Mackenzie Love in the final (8.363 / 76 on an 8.31 dial vs 8.049 / 80 on an 8.10 dial). Currently the 2023 points leader, Redshaw is undoubtedly hoping to see out his final season in the class in style.

Hutchinson & Dibley Sportsman ET

Gary Lake vs Michael Franklin

A total of 27 cars, with eight newcomers and a lot of very consistent passes, meant it was anyone’s game in this competitive starter class. Chris Cresswell held tight to the number one spot throughout qualifying, with Kirstie Tramm and Steve Mellors in hot pursuit, and stayed in the running until the semis. But it was Gary Lake in the third-gen Firebird who emerged victorious come Sunday afternoon, just five hundredths ahead of Michael Franklin’s Range Rover. Yep, you read that Liam Sturman right. There was drama in Friday qualifying when Brian Huxley’s V8powered Focus blew chunks on the line,

WINNING COMEBACK

A total of 11 cars lined up for the always fiercely competitive 9.90-index Super Gas class. Among them, back in the hot seat after a 10-year absence, was Stuart Morrice in the family ’69 Camaro. After clocking 9.965 / 150 in testing, he qualified first and went on to win the event – while also running in Super Pro ET and having to repair the car’s sump along the way. That’s what we call a comeback. Another returnee after more than a decade away was Wayne Hiscock, pedalling the Kieran Turner 572ci Chevelle that he ran in Pro ET before, while new to the class was Kieran Turner in the Chevy S10, who quickly discovered just how consistent you have to be to succeed in Super Gas. Likewise Dan Page in the ex-Jon Morton No Hair Racing Camaro, who clocked a too quick 9.683 / 154 in Thursday practice. First round of qualifying saw Andy Harrison on top (9.934 / 142), followed by Andy Dibley, Marc Huxley and Bob Molden, the latter two also double timing in Pro ET, while Stuart Doignie got to grips with his new-to-him Brogie T. Both Morrice and Molden then ran superbly through qualifying, trading the number one spot, until Hiscock jumped from 10 to snatch it in qualifying six (9.912 / 97) – only to be outdone by Dan Page (9.908) and then Morrice (9.903) in the next session. By the end of round one of eliminations on the Sunday, the field was down to Morrice, Dan Page Bob Molden Molden, Harrison, Hiscock, Doignie and David Fulton – with two breaking out, leaving Dibley to line up against Doignie and Morrice against Hiscock. As noted earlier, the final went the way of Morrice (10.011 / 146) versus the losing 9.993 / 132 of Dibley.

the exiting gearbox fluid igniting and causing impressive smoke bomb. Other interesting class debuts came in the form of Liam Sturman’s Jaguar XK8, Jack McClure’s sweet 350ci-powered 100E and Matt Halsall’s rally-spec Mk2 Escort. All of these took on various front and rear-wheel drive British, Japanese and German models, the occasional American… and even a Tesla. Let’s not go there…

Mixing up an already eclectic class this weekend were Supercharged Outlaw stalwart Andy Hadfield in the Twister T, Wild Buncher Rob Brown in the Rebel slingshot (8.382 / 158) and Steve Saunders in the fresh out Model B-bodied Altered (8.469 / 157 best). And talking of Altereds, Allan Schofield is now behind the wheel of the ex-Dave Gibbons Rough Diamond T (8.053 / 163 best). Of those, the Fadster Andy Hadfield deserves a special mention for clocking a new PB of 7.430 / 182 first time out on Thursday practice, though engine damage sidelined the Twister team after that impressive start. Likewise the M&M Racing team, who stepped up to a 10/71 blower and methanol injection in place of nitrous on the big-block Supra. A holed cylinder on the Saturday brought their weekend to Mark Turner an end, but a 7.61 / 173 pass put a big smile on Mark Turner’s face. The fresh paint on Mark Coulsell’s Ball Breaker slingshot surely helped him bag the number one spot in Friday qualifying one (8.294 / 157), with Barry Giles and Stuart Morrice close behind, but he was soon usurped by Matt Peters in the Lucas Oil dragster. Meanwhile, Alan Didwell Tom Atkinson was coming on strong with a string of PB 8.3s, culminating in an 8.330 / 163, as were Alan Didwell, Lee Huxley and Andy Thetford in the Black Pearl Camaro (multiple PBs and an 8.262 / 173 best). In eliminations, Kieran Astley bagged his first seven (7.954 / 177) – form he continued into round two, which saw Brown, Huxley, Morrice and AC Bell all head for their trailers. With Dave Russell a no show in the quarters, Peters, Atkinson and Didwell went through. And Atkinson continued to take the win from Didwell in the finals, elated to have achieved new speed and ET PBs (8.306 and 163mph) along the way. Mark Coulsell

BFastR Super Comp Leah Kellett came out strong in this 8.90-index class with an 8.905 / 164 to lead the field in Friday’s qualifying, while Stuart Doignie was back out campaigning in his old class with a 515ci motor in the Brogie ’27 T that was previously Simon Fulton’s ride (while also doing double time in Super Gas). Richard Tunstall was hauling in the beautiful, Kevin Cerasale-built Brogie T, carding 8.875 / 142 in qualifying three. Steve Field held second position Richard Tunstall vs Paul Hudson (9.285 / 155) until Steve Hudson took the throttle stop off and came blasting Steve Hudson through in qualifying four (8.920 / 167), just ahead of Paul Hudson.

Stuart Doignie

Leah Kellett

Then Tunstall started to turn up the pressure, moving up into fourth and seeing off Kellett, who ducked out with engine problems in round one of eliminations. Both Hudsons went through, but it was Paul who came up against Tunstall in the final – only to pull a red and let the T do the talking (9.300 / 133 vs a quicker 9.025 / 153).

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator Though some were taking it a bit easy after winter rebuilds and upgrades, a 13-car field in Street Eliminator is impressive – even if was reduced somewhat after Tony Higgs, Graham Smith and Al Williamson all had to miss the mandatory cruise due to mechanical issues. Rob Carter put his 427ci Volkswagen Passat into top spot after round one (8.472 / 163), with Tony Higgs hot on his heels in the rapid Capri (8.922 / 153). However, it didn’t take Andy Bond long to find Andy Bond his form, stepping confidently into the number one spot in round two of qualifying with a 7.652 at 196mph, while the likes of Rob Slater, Joe Stevens and Ashley Cooper all worked steadily James Murray to conquer new set-ups. By round three, Al McSweeney was second into the sevens (7.820 / 173) and in second place, while Mark Sheridan saw 182mph on his ticket after a huge top end charge. Higgs matched Sheridan’s terminal speed on Saturday morning, joining the seven club with a 7.908 in qualifying five for third Graham Smith position, though Sheridan bumped his terminal massively to 197.13mph. Rob Carter Later rounds saw a new PB for Ricky Hale (10.5461 / 132) in round six and multiple side-by-side sevens, though still Bond held his lead. Then the attrition started… Come eliminations, Andy Bond took his top qualifier bye in round one and then kept the Ugly Sister ’56 ahead from there on in. On the way he saw off James Murray in the turbo LS-powered Mk2 Cortina, then Rob Slater’s ’57 in the semis and Al McSweeney’s Volvo in the finals, where he carded a 7.402 / Ricky Hale 204 weekend best.

Outlaw Anglia Despite a small field of just six in the ever-popular Outlaw class, there was no let up in the action. Mick Taylor and Jon Webster were on form from the start, the former going 8.461 / 166 and the latter 8.664 / 106 in round one qualifying, with Ben Kennedy, Doug McClure and Wayne Power in their wake. Reigning 2022 champion Rob Stone joined the party in qualifying five after a delay reaching the track, and went straight into the number two spot with an 8.299 / 159 PB pass. But Webster’s 7.511 / 152 in Fast Company Too remained the time to beat. Unfortunately, mechanical issues and tyre trouble sidelined both Taylor and Webster in eliminations, leaving the door open for Power and Kennedy to capitalise on their solos in round one. But it was Power, with a bye in the semis, who surprised himself by beating an ailing Stone in the finals (10.620 / 123 vs 16.302 / 58), making all the work done to the car over the winter surely feel thoroughly worthwhile.

7.239 PB Dan Williams debuted his new LT1 350-powered second generation Camaro, running under his 11.20 index with an 11.05 first time out – but then lunched second gear in the transmission, ending his racing. Chris Todd’s Fiesta also went out early doors with engine problems. Behind Williams in the number two spot in qualifying was the insane front-wheel drive, turbocharged Escort van of Terry Newton, running consistent 9.1-9.3-second quarters all weekend, while David Swift was trying out a new two-stage nitrous system on his turbocharged AMX. When he gave it both barrels, he recorded a PB 7.380 / 181 – but then kept improving to a best of 7.239 / 190. Great work. Dan Williams First round of eliminations saw Spencer Tramm, Kev Jenkins (getting to grips with a new FuelTech fuel delivery system in the Fraudster Escort) and Newton go through, but it was Nic Williams who was really on a roll. With a 427 now under the bonnet of his ’69 Camaro, he clocked 9.55, 9.50 and then a 9.477, lining himself up for the final on Sunday afternoon – where he met another ’69 Camaro of team mate, Spencer Tramm. When Tramm saw red, Nic took the event win with a 10.124 / 96 pass.

Out & About Words and pics: James Webber Now in its ninth year, including being safely run during the pandemic, the Classic and Vintage Vehicle Rally in Wadebridge has established itself as a firm favourite in calendar for car enthusiasts in the South-West. Organised by Jason and Emma Goss, the gathering is fast becoming the show season opener in many people’s diaries down here, and one which many people plan well in advance to attend. Held at the Royal Cornwall Showground each year over Easter and again on the August bank holiday, the show is free to enter for any vehicle built before 1995 (if attending from 10-4) while the public pay £5 on the gate. Camping is available for exhibitors wanting to make a weekend of it, which many now do and there’s a select group of caterers on site to keep everyone topped up with bacon and caffeine. To make it a bit different, the Showground also hosts a collectables fair at the same time. This is run separately to the Rally, but with a variety of antiques and curios available to browse and purchase it adds another dimension to the weekend. I was only able to attend on Good Friday, but there was already a great

Springtime shows always provide the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends who have brought their cars out of hibernation selection of American’s and classics on display. Springtime shows always provide the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends who have brought their cars out of hibernation – or in some cases those going out for a test

run in their new winter purchases. The show is a really relaxed day out with plenty to do, and is well worth looking into if you are in the area. There’s a Facebook group page (Wadebridge Classic and Vintage Vehicle Rally) which you can join to get info and dates, along with pictures of previous events that have taken place. Jason and Emma also run a Facebook page called South West Classic Events Calendar, which has all info on shows and rallies taking place in the South West, where organisers can promote their events free of charge. the Custom Car years JUNE 1980: A dip into history from Custom Car and the rest of the world Birmingham, 8 June: British Leyland unveils the new Morris Ital, fooling absolutely no-one into believing it’s anything other than a rehashed Marina

Chicago, 20 June: The Blues Brothers premieres before opening across the US. At the time, it sets a new world record for the most cars destroyed in the making of a film Rome, 22 June: Horst Hrubesch scores a late winner as West Germany beat Belgium 2-1 in the final of the European Championship New York, 23 June: The David Letterman Show is broadcast for the first time

Warp Factor Three IN 1977, BOB WELLSTEAD BOUGHT A 1935 HILLMAN MINX… OR RATHER, THE REMAINS OF A 1935 HILLMAN MINX. What he got was a rolling chassis, an incomplete body and a worn out 283 Chevrolet engine. He proceeded to clean up the body as best he could, welding up the numerous holes and duff seams. After that, he then went on to chop the roof by three and a half inches, section the body by five inches and extend the rear wings by six inches. As if all that wasn’t enough, he decided he’d like to convert the four-door body to a twodoor version, meaning that somewhere along the line he would have to lose a couple of side windows. The front end was missing completely, so Bob made a new bonnet in four sections from 18-gauge sheet aluminium. It works just like the real thing and the flat side panels are notable for some nice louvring – though if you think the bonnet panelling is good, you should take a look at the radiator shell. This was completely fabricated from sections of 18-gauge mild steel which were formed to shape and then welded together. The only part of the original running gear Bob bothered to salvage was the front axle, a dropped tubular Jago item,

which was promptly chromed. And moving on down the chassis we find a Westminster rear axle mounted on Spax adjustable shocks. To round things off, he made his own sunken floor panel, built a fuel tank and stainless steel firewall and, one nice final touch, frenched in the sidelights. We mentioned that the original 283 Chevy was knackered, and indeed it was beyond salvation. Bob replaced it with another 283 from a ’63 Impala. The gearbox behind this is a two-speed aluminium cased Powerglide auto. Originally, the car was red with black arches and running

boards and went under the name of Moulin Rouge. But Bob had it repainted in his own wondrous colours – sort of black and silver with orange and yellow pinstripes along the side. So, what does all this have to do with Warp Factor Three, computer-stylee lettering from the days of James Burke and a picture of Bob’s Minx being menaced by what looks like an alien spacecraft? Simple. The June 1980 issue of Custom Car had a sci-fi theme involving laser guns, intergalactic travel and, mainly, norks. And some very cool motors – of which Bob’s was one of the coolest.

Geneva, 23 June: Computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee begins work on a system called ENQUIRE – which will go on to become the forerunner of the World Wide Web Chalfont St Peter, 23 June: Dad’s Army star John Laurie, famous for his catchphrase ‘we’re doomed’, dies aged 83

We are not alone JOE CORTESE IS A GUY who has a small business in West London called Transcontinental. He’s connected with some people in America who use one of these new-fangled things called a computer. What they do is record details from car dealers and newspaper ads of all the cars for sale they can find for sale in America. The records are updated daily and if you know who to speak to, you can find any kind of American car you want – if it’s for sale anywhere in America, they can locate it. All you need to do is enter your requirements into the computer, being as specific as you like: make, model, year, colour, colour of seats, price range, whatever matters to you. The computer runs a check and if it finds what you wanted, then zappo! If it doesn’t succeed first time, it will go on looking until it finally finds the right car for you (or until you amend the details, or just give up and ask it to stop). Once the computer has thrown up a car which seems to fit, Transcontinental will offer the details to the customer. If he’s interested, an engineer goes to examine the car, does a full report and sents it across to England by telephone or telex. The customer says yes or no, until he finds exactly what he wants. Transcontinental then

buys the car, ships it across to England and away goes a happy man. Joe says this makes it possible for someone in England to buy the best possible product at the very best price, and that if you do it properly you can’t go wrong. People know exactly what they’ve bought without ever needing to see it or go through the hassle of travelling and searching for it themselves. He reckons it can’t fail. Transcontinental’s sales ledger for 1979 makes interesting reading. Just look at some of the things they brought in that year, and at ridiculously cheap prices: mint ’59 Corvette convertible, £5400; ’59 Cadillac convertible (power hood, seats, windows, cruise control,

you name it), £3200; pink ’59 four-door Caddy, £1700; ’60 T-bird convertible, Chargers, ’57 Chevy. Dodge show van, ’70 Caddy convertible, ’65 T-bird convertible (£2700), ’73 Z28, anything you like. All those beautiful old cars just lying about in America waiting to be whisked across the sea to England. All you need to do is get hold of Joe and say ‘get me,’ oh, let’s see, ‘get me a Roadrunner. The type with the big wing. I’d like it low mileage if possible, a dark colour with a white interior, and no accidents in its history’. It’s a brilliant idea, we reckon. Space-age in its vision, in fact. Who would have thought that these new-fangled computer things could be so useful?
