Even the toughest nuts in the Army might shudder at the prospect of deep wading in the sort of water temperatures that go with a climate knocking on for fifty below. And this version of the Wolf was equipped to do it at a depth of up to 1.5 metres.

Another interesting feature of these Defenders is that they were built with struts to keep their tailgate down during wading. This was to let water flow in to the back body, thus preventing it from floating away, and also to let it pour back out again as quickly as possible once reaching land. Hard-top models were fitted with an escape hatch about the driver’s and passenger’s seats.

Preventing the engine from sucking in water and suffering a catastrophic hydraulic lock is the most critical matter when you’re wading a vehicle, but protecting it long-term is every bit as important. Hence the use of grease

LAND ROVER HAS OVERHAULED its online buying portal, allowing customers three ways to get on board.

These include a full virtual showroom for those seeking to buy a Land Rover outright, as well as a monthly subscription service allowing six-monthly vehicle changes and what Land Rover calls Road Trip Rentals – a high-end car hire operation based in London and Manchester with vehicles being delivered to the customer’s door.

Describing the service as an ‘online concierge,’ Jaguar Land Rover says subscriptions are available from £850 per month.

olice in Surrey are seeking the rightful owners of several stolen Land Rovers, following a ‘forensic recovery’ of the vehicles from an isolated field in Runnymede.

At least five Defender 90s and 110s were found at the site near the village of Lyne. They were recovered in various states of destruction – one Td5 90, which had been reported stolen some three and a half weeks previously, was yet to be stripped for parts, however a 110 was recovered which had been reduced to little more than a chassis.

In the middle of the destruction, one of the most dispiriting sights to behold was a 90 which had just rebuilt by Retro Defenders in Harrogate. It had been reported stolen from Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor in early May – little more that two weeks before the recovery operation.

During that time, it had been stripped to a rolling chassis and its rear tub, with Exmoor seat runners and woodlined floor, dumped in the weeds.

A small amateur tool kit was also

found at the scene – as well as an engine crane.

While the second-hand parts market is a vital part of the Land Rover scene, owners need to be in no doubt that if they buy items from unknown sources, they are actively encouraging the trade in stolen vehicles. Of course, they also need to be aware that at any time, in almost any place, their Defender might be the next to suffer this fate.

Surrey Police is seeking information about suspicious activity in the Lyne area, and would also welcome tip-offs as to the identity of those who may be involved. Trek Weekend coming up at Land Rover Experience Scotland

I

f you’ve got a Land Rover but you’ve not yet plucked up the bottle to take it offroad, Land Rover Experience Scotland is organising the perfect event for you.

This is a trek weekend at which the centre’s instructors will be on hand to help you learn how to get the best from your vehicle.

The event, which is to be held on 30-31 July, will take place in the hills and forests surrounding the centre’s location near Dunkeld, about 15 miles north of Perth, in a glorious landscape often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Highlands.’ Guests will drive their own Land Rover on their choice of off-road driving routes – which have been designed to suit clients with differing levels of ability and experience.

It’s not just about getting to grips with your motor, though. LRE Scotland is quick to stress that the weekend will be of the family-friendly variety, with light-hearted competitions, a treasure hunt and a picnic in the hills amid the stunning scenery of what’s locally known as Big Tree Country. Safe to say the Defender in the picture was somewhere else.

Day one ends with a campfire hog roast and the option to camp or caravan under the stars or stay in a local hotel. AL Services in Poole recently had to deal with an extreme case of wheel bearing neglect. The vehicle’s owner had ignored the warnings for so long that when it finally let go, the repair bill was way bigger than it needed to be.

‘This wheel bearing was so worn that the excessive play caused it to overheat and burn off any remaining grease,’ the company explains. ‘The hub and stub axles were damaged beyond repair and needed replacing.’

Wheel bearings never last forever, but this kind of mess is so unnecessary.

If you hear a rumble when driving, it always pays to get it checked out,’ advises AL Services. ‘If caught in time, changing the wheel bearings and oil seals would have been enough.’

MPG? I’ll worry about that when the price of fuel comes down

When the cost of filling up your tank is huge, there’s no point fretting about fuel economy, says Tim Gibson Words: Tim Gibson WHEN THE SUEZ CRISIS WAS UNFOLDING IN 1956, the boss of the British Motor Corporation, Lord Leonard, ordered Sir Alec Issigonis to design a modest little car that would fairly sip fuel. His thinking was that the era of petrol rationing had prompted people to look more closely at their choice of vehicle. An economical runabout in the form of the Mini would be just the ticket for people worried about fuel shortages.

You may think a similar innovation would be inspired by the current costof-living crisis. As prices exceed £2 per litre for petrol and diesel, you’d think

everyone would jump into all-electric cars with the eagerness of a Number 10 staffer opening their third bottle of Chablis, thereby depressing the value of vehicles powered by the internal combustion engine.

Yet that doesn’t seem to be happening. While sales of electric vehicles continue to rise, the market for used petrol and diesel cars remains buoyant.

And, anecdotally, dealers have no trouble shifting the big-engined SUVs that you’d expect to be lame ducks in the current economy.

As someone who closely monitors the prices of used 4x4s (on some evenings, my ‘professional research’ – for

which read ‘time spent browsing on Autotrader’ – easily tops four hours), I can confidently support this by reference to pricing. Indeed, I’d say values of used 4x4s are stronger than ever.

Take the Freelander 2 as a case in point. I paid £8k for one in 2017: a 58-plate mid-miler TD4 SE with a full service history and tidy bodywork. Such vehicles are changing hands now for pretty much identical money. And the same is true of the Freelander’s thirstier relatives, including early Discos, Range Rovers and, of course, Defenders.

Some of this is due to the nostalgic love buyers have of the previous generation Land Rovers. I know of

several people who have sought out a tidy Discovery 4 rather than buying a Disco 5, on the basis that they much prefer the character of the earlier vehicle. So, too, the Freelander 2 versus Disco Sport, although fans are starting to see the latter’s appeal as it ages gracefully.

But there’s something else at work.

Because the strong residuals are reflected beyond our beloved green oval.

Across the board, the market for SUVs and 4x4s is lively, despite the extraordinary costs of fuelling them.

Stop to think about it, though, and it’s not so surprising. Filling up a car’s fuel tank – any car, no matter its size – prompts a universal reaction just now: ‘HOW much?!’ And if that’s how you

feel whether you drive a Fiesta or a Freelander, why wouldn’t you choose the latter?

For those of us who love 4x4s, the incentive to downsize is far less pronounced than it was, say, a year ago.

There’s a devil-may-care attitude that says since I’m spending an arm and a leg on fuel, I may as well drive a vehicle I love, cost be damned.

That’s how I feel right now, at any rate. I’ve gone from teeing up a frugal Focus or parsimonious Polo to eyeing a Disco 2 or maybe even a Range Rover.

Besides, with all these throwaway electric cars now hitting the road, I feel as if I ought to get my hands on an eco-friendly, drive-it-forever 4x4 while there’s still some available.

Will they ever stop stealing Defenders?

crotes, scumbags, villains, rats, pond-life… we’ve all got our own go-to word for people who steal Land Rovers. A good many of them are unprintable, of course, but the lower you stoop in your description of them, the closer you get to their level.

The latest example of the damage these low-lives do to honest folk comes from Surrey, where the police recently retrieved five 90s and 110s that had been stolen from their rightful owners and taken to a secluded corner of a field near the M3/M25 junction to be stripped for parts. One was still intact, one was all the way down to the chassis and the others were mid-way through the process of being butchered when the law intervened.

Seeing someone’s price and joy in this state is always painful. Even a ratty old 90 or 110 can still be a much-loved family member – just as much as the sort of street machine more and more Defenders are being turned into now.

Still, one of the most heartbreaking sights from this particular bust was that of a recently restored 90 that has been stripped down to its fresh galvanised chassis. Its rear tub was lying in the weeds next to it, with a beautiful wooden floor still in place. So much work had gone into it – and here it was, a couple of weeks after being stolen, looking like something from a scrapyard.

At least its engine was still in place, but at least one of the other vehicles’ had already been removed and, you have to assume, sold on. So someone out there is driving around in a Defender powered by what they know perfectly well is someone else’s property.

With Defenders becoming worth more and more all the time, perhaps people will come to realise that protecting them really does matter. A tracker is still an incredibly powerful way of preventing yours from being next.

But the most powerful thing of all would be if people stopped turning a blind eye to where the parts they’re buying have come from. Doing so is not easy, I agree – but the due diligence you do today could be the Defender of your own that doesn’t get stolen tomorrow.

Do Land Rovers rust faster by the sea?

I

t’s commonly believed that if you live by the sea, your car will rust more quickly. But research by classic Land Rover specialist John Brown 4x4 has shown that in fact, corrosion rates are less likely to be influenced by geography than by human activity.

Analysing corrosion rates for the 63 most populated areas of Britain, researchers found that Aberdeen is the rustiest place to keep a vehicle.

However the weather-beaten Scottish city is followed in the list by Barnsley and Belfast – with Doncaster, Glasgow and Wakefield also in the top ten.

At the other end of the scale, cities with the slowest corrosion rates include Swansea, Plymouth, Bristol, Exeter and Blackpool.

‘It is a common misconception that coastal towns experience the worst rates of corrosion,’ says Greg Hendry, Marketing Manager at John Brown 4x4. ‘As our data shows, coastal areas

such as Swansea and Plymouth show some of the slowest rates in the UK. ‘While there is no doubt that moisture contributes to rusting and salty sea spray catalyses the process, the vital role that air pollution plays in corrosion is often overlooked.

‘Airborne pollutants such as sulphur dioxide are actually some of the largest contributors to corrosion.

Industrial cities have a particularly high concentration of these chemicals in the air, which causes the rusting process to accelerate and brings metals to degrade at a faster rate.’

CUTTING CORNERS ON SERVICING is the biggest ever false economy. You’d think everyone would have learned that by now, but according to 4x4 Engine Rebuilds it’s actually quite common.

The company recently took in a Range Rover Vogue whose 4.4 SDV8 engine had ended up in a shocking condition thanks to a life that was heavy on short, local trips and light on oil changes. With the vehicle hardly ever getting up to its full operating temperature, carbon deposits in the engine had reached crisis point – and this was in a Range Rover with only around 60,000 miles on the clock.

To prevent this, the company recommends changing your oil and filter every 5000 miles – and, if you too use your Land Rover mainly for short hops, keeping carbon at bay by taking it out for regular runs on the motorway. Simple stuff – but still too much for an awful lot of people.

It’s a Defender to long for!

L

and Rover has unveiled the third and final member of the Defender family. The new 130 retains the wheelbase of the 110 but gains a longer rear overhang, with its body extended by 340mm (13.4”), allowing it to offer a larger load area and the ability to accommodate up to eight people in comfort.

Whereas the old-shape Defender was very much a utility vehicle in 130 form, this time the longest model in the range is presented under the ‘adventure for all’ banner, promising to be ‘perfect for all-terrain family expeditions.’ It comes with air suspension as standard and is priced from £73,895 on the road.

As this suggests, the 130 is every bit as much of a premium vehicle as the 90 and 110. More so, in fact, if anything. It comes as standard with light oak veneers, Windsor leather trim and an enlarged 11.4” media screen running the latest version of Land Rover’s Pivi Pro infotainment system – with what3words navigation allowing it to pinpoint any location on the planet with no need for a phone signal.

The 130 also features Cabin Air Purification Plus as standard. This constantly maintains the best possible air quality inside the vehicle while filtering out odours, allergens and viruses, and allows owners to prime the

condition of the cabin remotely via a smartphone app.

On a slightly less esoteric level, the extended rear can accommodate up to 2516 litres of cargo, or 1329 with the second row of seats in place. The vehicle is available in five and eightseat configurations; in the latter, even with all three rows in use it can hold 389 litres in the back. A payload of up to 750kg (8 seats) or 800kg (5 seats) allows you to make the most of this, though a towing limit of 3000kg will come as a rude shock to anyone used to assuming there’ll never be such a thing as a Defender that can’t haul the legal maximum.

In another departure from Defender tradition, power for the 130 comes from a choice of engines including two petrol units and one diesel. Again, this illustrates its position as a premium model within an already premium range.

The diesel option is the familiar D300, which produces 300bhp and 479lbf.ft, the latter from 1500rpm; the two petrol units are the P300 (300bhp, 347lbf.ft from 1500rpm) and the P400 (400bhp, 406lbf.ft from 2000rpm).

Land Rover quotes 0-60mph times of 7.1 seconds for the D300, 7.5 seconds for the P300 and 6.3 seconds for the P400. These are undeniably impressive figures for a two and a half tonne vehicle standing six and a half

feet tall and measuring seventeen and a half in length. All three engines are six-cylinder mild hybrids, with 48v starter-generators integrated within them for ‘seamless responses as well as enhanced fuel economy.’ Talking of which, the Defender 130 posts WLTP combined figures of up to 32.1mpg for the D300 diesel and 24.8mpg for both the P300 and P400.

The V8 and P400e plug-in hybrid engines are not yet available in this version of the Defender, though it would seem only a matter of time.

Off-road, the 130 features Adaptive Dynamics and the latest Terrain

Response system as standard to go with the aforementioned air springs.

The latter can deliver up to 430mm of articulation and lift the vehicle by 71.5mm at the front and 73.5mm at the rear, allowing it to ford up to 900mm of water. Ground clearance is quoted at 290mm, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 37.5°, 28.5° and 27.8° respectively.

The 130 will be available in HSE, X-Dynamic SE, X-Dynamic HSE and X specifications, in addition to a First Edition. This offers a choice of three colours – white with light grey leather and light oak veneer; grey with tan

leather and walnut veneer; and a new Sedona Red with black leather and dark oak veneer. First Edition spec is based on the HSE and adds matrix LED headlamps, heated second and third-row seating, four-zone climate control and premium ICE, as well as 20” alloy wheels as standard.

Prices for the First Edition start at £82,965, which gets you the D300 engine; it’s also available with the P400 unit, costing £84,715. The entry-level £73,895 figure gets you an X-Dynamic SE with the P300 engine, while at the top of the range (so far, at least) the P400 X will set you back £100,645.

ant a pick-up truck?

Want a flatbed? Want a van? Want a soft-top?

Want a chassis-cab?

If the answers were mainly yes, you’re going to have to spend an awful lot of money to get each of the trucks you’re

after – not to mention a bigger driveway to put them on.

Or you just need to buy a Land Rover and a bunch of spanners. The bodywork on a Series truck, and even early 90s and 110s, was famously modular – you could buy a truck-cab

and turn it into a hard-top, or a hard-top into a soft-top, or fetch the body off altogether and build your own from the bulkhead back. Station wagons were a little more tricky, with extra crossmembers for mounting those pesky seatbelts, but even these can

be reimagined with no more than a modicum of engineering.

And here’s a good example. This 109” Series III left the factory in 1974 and in the 48 years since then it’s had eight owners. We can’t be completely sure what body it had back then in the

days of Alvin Stardust and the Bay City Rollers, but today it’s a pick-up. And a hard-top.

The latest of those eight owners has both bodies in his possession, see.

‘The van roof with cat flap rear door is what came on the vehicle, and is in the same paint, so I presume it is original to the truck,’ he explains. ‘The pick-up roof I bought separately.

‘They can be unbolted and changed over in about one and a half hours. So you can change the configuration, or fit a canvas top – or even go without.’

Whatever body it’s wearing, anyway, the first thing you’re likely to notice about the vehicle is that it’s sitting on distinctly non-standard wheels and tyres. The latter are 235/85R16 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains, so basically a metric 7.50, which is close enough for most people, but the wheels are from a much later Defender. They’re painted in Winter Grey, which is interestingly unusual but matches the truck-cab – something that’s most evident when you see the spare mounted to the back of it.

Something else you’re likely to notice is that the vehicle sits a little on the high side. The owner (who politely asked us to keep his name out of the story) reckons it’s up by a couple of inches, which looks about right to us. This is the work of a set of parabolic springs, which are mated to more modern shock absorbers to do something about the 109’s traditionally agricultural ride.

If you’re the kind of Land Rover enthusiast who furrows their brow at the first sign of anything that’s not ‘right,’ you’ll already be scowling about all this. The military front bumper won’t have helped your mood, either.

everyone else, better. Specifically, under the bonnet, where the original 2.25-litre petrol engine has made way for a 300Tdi. This was installed using a full Steve Parker kit, which is always a good sign. It was done a couple of owners ago, but our man is full of praise for the standard to which it was done. Hardly surprisingly, of course, given that he bought it.

Behind the engine is a standard four-speed manual gearbox, which the truck’s owner thinks is original. He can be more certain about the transfer case, though, because he had an Ashcroft high ratio kit installed in it by a local Land Rover specialist.

Also presumed original are the axles, which are Rover up front and Salisbury in the back, both running 4.7:1 diffs.

One of the swivels had been rebuilt before the current owner bought the

vehicle and he’s done the other one himself, which is the kind of levelling up we can all get on board with.

So too is the other headline in the story, which is that the whole vehicle has been rebuilt on a galvanised chassis. Between this and the Tdi engine, some serious investment has gone into getting this 109 ready for the second half-century of its life.

‘The chap I bought it from had got it in an auction,’ explains its owner.

‘Clearly a previous owner to him had spent an awful lot of money and time doing the bulk of the work.

‘I bought it as a bit of a project, with the intention of using it as a work vehicle. I was originally going to have it signwritten and use it as my daily drive.’

Life gets in the way, of course, and signwriting a body that’s apt to be unbolted at any moment could be considered an extravagance. Still, there

can be few Series trucks out there that would be better suited to daily use than this one.

Of course, with all that’s been done to it you just know that if this were the tale of a 90 or 110, you’d be looking at an eye-watering confection of alloys, paintwork and fancy trim. The Series equivalent of that is to return a vehicle to showroom condition, of course, and all too often to strip it of its character in the process, but there are other ways of proving to the world that a Land Rover ain’t a rough one.

And by no means is this a rough one.

All the same, there’s a nice bit of patina to it that’s come not just from hard work but from previous owners’ attempts to hold back the ravages of time – which, however you look at it, is part of what makes an old ‘un what it is.

‘It appears to have lots of original paint,’ comments its owner. ‘I think

UNDERCOVER COVERS some parts have been resprayed in the past, but it has some age to it. The paint has patina and has some marks and dings – but it’s charming in its honesty and originality.’

Similarly, the body cappings are original but not showroom-original – and when a previous owner repaired the door frames, they took care not to mess up the exterior paintwork while they were about it.

‘The doors open and close correctly,’ says their proud owner. ‘They aren’t perfect in their operation… then again, it’s hard to find a Land Rover where they are!’

What we particularly like about this Land Rover is that despite all the time and money that’s been spent on it, it’s still the real thing. ‘Real’ as in honest and down to earth – you could argue that if you’re doing all that to a vehicle, you should also be making it pristine, but this is a story about someone who didn’t want a more valuable asset – they wanted a better Land Rover.

Team Gumtree 4x4’s hybrid Land Rover charges to success in Kenya

B

ritish based Team Gumtree 4x4 has completed a unique trio of sporting successes – by winning its class for the third time in the Kenyan Rhino Charge.

The team’s Land Rover is a classic ‘bitsa’ made from a 90 chassis, Series III bulkhead, 4.0-litre V8 engine, LT95 gearbox and axles containing a Detroit Locker at the back and Truetrac at the front. It qualifies for the Unmodified Class in the Charge mainly by not having portal axles or a twin-motor winch.

The Charge predates challenge events by years, but in some ways it’s similar in principle to the way they operate. Teams are given 13 checkpoints and 10 hours in which to visit them all; the winner is the team that does so while covering the shortest distance.

While this sounds simple enough, the distance between two checkpoints may only be a couple of hundred yards – but it might also be up a cliff or across a field of car-sized rocks. Teams have to decide whether to take the short, potentially extreme line or save time by going the longer way round.

To aid them in doing this, a team really is a team. As well as a driver and navigator, each vehicle carries a crew of runners whose job is to scout ahead for hazards and routes through the terrain. It’s like walking a trials course, but in real time and on a huge scale.

For Team Gumtree 4x4, the driver was John Bowden – founder of the

famous Sussex-based Land Rover specialist of the same name and a long-term supporter of the event’s charitable aims. He was navigated by Lorian Campbell-Clause, making full use of satellite images as well as an actual map, with the running done by Simon Davies, Hugo Potgieter and John’s eldest son, Lawrence Bowden.

The other vital team member is Chief Mechanic Chris Ballard, who preps the Land Rover every year to ensure it has the reliability needed to battle its way through the bush for 10 hours non-stop. The vehicle was originally built in Gumtree’s own premises, mainly by workshop maestro Martin Stapleton. It won the first UK version of the Rhino Charge in 1997 before being freighted out to Kenya in 2000, where it has lived ever since. This was Team Gumtree 4x4’s 23rd event in total, with the clock currently running at more than £160,000 raised for Rhino Ark. In addition to winning its class this year, the team was positioned 13th overall – a result which placed John and his crew ahead of more then 30 portal-axled rivals. As always, however, fate is a fickle mistress in the world of motorsport – and the outcome could easily have been very different.

‘Our fuel tank split at about midday after we landed the guard on a boulder,’ John explains. ‘We repaired it well enough to finish, but then we lost our brakes three sections from home, most

likely when a branch pulled the brake pipe off the rear axle.

‘It made less difference than I expected, actually. Though there was one hill I came down with never more than one wheel on the ground at a time!

John was also gracious enough to point out that had Petra Somen’s Bushbabes team not got stuck on some enormous lava rocks 150 metres from their last checkpoint, they would have beten him to the class victory. ‘They said it should have been called the Obelix Charge, because it looked as if he had lived there and been having fun throwing all these boulders around!’

Team Gumtree 4x4 was supported

by Britpart, which donated a 12,000lb winch and a number of other parts. In addition, Silverstone Tyres in Nairobi supplied six General Grabber X3s.

‘We really abused them,’ says John.

‘I had them smoking on rocks at one point, but they were faultless from the point of view of sidewall and tread damage, punctures and so on.’

John’s Land Rover covered exactly 35.92 kilometres while visiting all 13 checkpoints. This compared to a best possible distance of 20 kilometres as the crow flies – though when you learn that the winning vehicle, Sean Avery’s Series II/Discovery hybrid, only covered 24.72km, you can see the standard achieved by the top competitors.

This also equates to an overall speed of 1.5mph, which should also tell you something about how serious the off-roading is on the Rhino Charge. It might be a charity event – but it’s also one of the most challenging tests any Land Rover can ever endure.

ONE OF THE REASONS for the Rhino Charge’s enduring popularity is that it raises money for an extremely good cause. The Rhino Ark is a charity set up in 1988 in a bid to save the Black Rhino from being poached to extinction in the Aberdare National Park; thanks to its efforts, the entire park is now encircled by a game-proof fence designed to prevent poaching and illegal logging as well as keeping animals from damaging farms.

In more recent times, the Rhino Ark has expanded its efforts to support conservation in other mountain ecosystems, notably around Mount Kenya and Mount Eburu. This has made a real difference to the lives of people living alongside Kenya’s indigenous species, as well as protecting the animals against the worst of the human race – all of it made possible by fundraising donations which have so far topped £11million.

There has always been a great deal of British interest in the Charge, and a UK version ran for several years starting in 1997.

or every Land Rover enthusiast, sooner or later the time comes when you have to wonder whether your life wouldn’t be improved by the addition of a 101.

Many go on to discover that indeed, their lives wouldn’t be improved by the

addition of a 101. But for a hardy few, the forward-control ex-Army monster is just the truck for them.

It’s not hard to see the appeal. It’s a Land Rover only bigger, so there’s more of it to love. It’s hideously ugly, in a kind of magnificent way only someone who

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available.

Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks.

Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run.

In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings.

Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover.

Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world.

Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example.

These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

properly gets it will understand. And it’s Army-simple, with easy access to all the oily bits. Oh, and it’s got a V8.

If you even have to ask about running costs, it’s not for you. But aside from their quirkly appeal as classics, which covers the Land Rover and military scenes alike, its huge back body means the 101 is actually very practical. In particular, Ambulance-bodied examples used to be popular for camper conversions – these

The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon?

A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy.

The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body.

Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing

Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)

£2500-£15,000

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status.

By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale.

Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop…

Pros: A Land Rover like no other, if that’s what you want Cons: Especially brutal to drive, and to find parts

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real

101 (1972-1978)

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when

£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on.

Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

127 (1985-1990)

The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which

by Land Rover standards.

Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V8 soundtrack. Everybody who sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running costs. Expensive to buy, too

These days, it’s very rare to find a 127 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 127 is more of an enthusiast’s

motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too.

Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too.

Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money.

Pros: Enormous size means limitless potential and character Cons: Unwieldy. Sure to have had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£35,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock.

The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 300. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.

Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)

The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though

The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment.

The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,

making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value the way an original-shaper does, either. Be in no doubt, though – this is a superb vehicle.

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era.

It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres.

The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures.

Today’s replacements are much

£400-£5500 more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that.

Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model

it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality.

It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too.

But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays.

The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a

bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive.

Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having.

Pros: Reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

Range Rover Classic (1970-96)£5000-£265,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000

The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there

are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model.

It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.

Range Rover L322 (2002-12)

The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-

liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown.

The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class.

The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner.

It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road.

Nevertheless, it is economical

£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting.

There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with 4WD. Pros: Economy, handling, iconic concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to

own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong.

Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go.

Electronics are laughably flaky.

And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t

Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £27,000-£180,000

The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the

range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable.

It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace.

Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it.

Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on)

other models expected to follow the Velar in due course.

But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks...

Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you.

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality.

The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most

most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty.

Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here.

Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it.

All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

Quality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of

excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing pre-

DEFENDER-BASED CAMPERS come in many shapes and sizes. And, inevitably, some are a lot nicer than others.

This 2.4 TDCi 110 is about as nice as they come. It was built professionally, with a pop-top roof conversion done by German outfit Custom Campers which also carries trunking for demountable side and rear awnings, and down below it has a huge list of equipment installed to turn it into an all-terrain motorhome.

This includes a long-range fuel tank, two water tanks (15 litres filtered for drinking, 35 litres for washing), Webasto space heater, removeable bed and National Luna fridge-freezer. National Luna is also responsible for the split-charge system gov-

erning output from two Optima Red-Tops, which are aided in charging by two 600W solar panels.

There’s a lot of weight in all this, so the 110 is held up at the back by Air Top springs. This helps level up its suspension, which gives it a 2” overall lift; a snorkel, various pash plates, rock sliders and a rear NAS step go with a set of six BFGoodrich All-Terrains to give it a solid level of ability wherever the owner fancies pitching up.

That could now be you, as the 110 is making way for a new vehicle. £35,950 is a lot for a 143,000-mile Puma – but if you can’t see past that the joke’s on you. It’s advertised opposite.
