The Series II marked the beginning of the 2.25 era for Land Rover, however the engine wasn’t quite ready in time for the earliest models. That left a number of very rare second-generation Land Rovers with genuine 2.0 petrol motors lying around…

rossovers are all the rage in 2018 and over the last decade is ne ype o ’ has taken the motoring industry by storm. These would-be 4x4s play on the senses, by having all the looks of a machine capable of surmounting more than a humble roadside kerb, but in reality they are nothing more than your run-of-the-mill two-wheel drive hatchback on stilts. ’s i e pu ing e eard o an a, on y o nd ou your mi man as a sec ond job. He might be great at bringing the milk and croissant to your door, but is e rea y going o drop a ne e Christmas tree? A croissant… sorry, bad habit – a crosso er asn’ a ays us a raud in an ’s sui o armour, oug ere have been plenty of different crossovers in the past, often through the necessity in rolling out a model as soon as possible, or while a manufacturer streamlines their model range. ome e amp es do you remem er the Defender before it was the Defender? The Ninety and One Ten carried the asis or e e ender, ic as na y given its name in 1990, but for those interim six to seven years, the models have been dubbed as crossovers, whilst Land Rover worked out how to put a proper engine in them.

Be ore a , you a e e age , which was a real crossover in terms of design, as it carried new design cues that would be adopted by the aforementioned Ninety and One Ten – such as the grille – yet the split screen and eries door and es remained in p ace for the time being. And in more recent history, Land o er ro ed ou e isco ery por i e o d ree ander engine in stalled, before bringing out the Ingenium range of motors just months later. ’s no e rs ime a ne engine asn’ een ready, ei er Bac in e ae s, e in roduc ion o e eries II was supposed to signal the beginning of a new era of powertrains. The 2.25-litre units would be a huge part of and o er’s u ure, on y e rs o e breed – the petrol variant – was running late for its debut. onse uen y, a num er o ear y e ries mode s s ipped e ne ’ and ad to make do with the outgoing 2.0-litre petrol motor that had been powering the eries or e as e years or so didn’ a e ong or e i re pe ro o s ar appearing in e eries , ie e diesel version would come along later with the launch of the IIA. Nevertheless, that brief crossover period gave Land Rover just enough of a window to assemble this beauty.

The Land Rovers at the West Midland Safari Park are more than just transport. At times, they need to intervene between a charging rhino and its intended target! On a visit to the park a few years ago, one keen animal-lover in particular took us on a very different kind of safari… or such a big off-roader, it was surprisingly nimble, and moved effortlessly across the wet grass. Grip and directional ability were precise and the target destination would be achieved without any need to select low range. It was then that the Land Rover intervened, gently

encouraging the massive two-tonne rhino to slow down and alter course, the big off-roader slamming on its brakes whilst giving out something of a disgrun ed u ’… We were sitting watching this from the safety of a battered and bruised Land Rover Discovery. The rhino in

question had been ambling, with surprising agility, towards a young giraffe that had lolloped away rather quickly. The ranger in the Land Rover Defender 90 had seen the potential problem and encouraged’ e massi e orned eas to change its mind, and direction. Just in case, the Land Rover had a substania u ar r ino ar ’ a e ron , but somehow, if it ever came to it, you knew who would come off best. Indeed, one camel-coloured Discovery also had a misma c ed ac door ino dam age,’ e p ains Bo a rence, irec or of Wildlife. The Land Rovers at the West Midland Safari and Leisure Park have a tough life, and are worked hard; much like every one of the rangers driving them. Bu i cou d a e een o so di er en ad Bo no recei ed a nudge in the back whilst playing football. The resultant fall caused severe spinal damage that led to one doctor sugges ing e oo or a des o , i a sui a e c air’ er one gra s,

spinal fusion, and the injection of bone granules from a German cow (some 25 years e ore e disco ered B , e fact that he actually managed to walk again was a surprise to the medical sa nice seda e o ce o as sug ges ed ns ead, Bo oo is sis er’s ad ice and en or a o s e’d seen advertised. It involved him getting on

his motorbike and driving from Kent to the Midlands, still in his medical spinal corset, to start work at the park on ris mas ay e’d ne er een o a oo in is i e… round years a er, oug , Bo nds imse responsi e or e i d i e at a park with a yearly animal food budget of £200,000. He is also respon-

Despite never going on the public roads, the tyres only last around 10,000 miles, ra er ess en ey ge c e ed y a ion’, Bo commen s aconica y The actual origins of the park go back a lot further than is perhaps obvious en you rs isi a egins ac in the 18th Century and a local businessman who made his fortune through the manufacture of dyes and sulphuric acid. He built the original Spring Grove House and had the land around it andscaped y apa i i y Bro n e whole estate remained in private hands right up to 1970, and was opened to e pu ic in y e ipper e d Organisation. Visit that year and you ou d a e me Bo , on e ron ga e handing out Johnny Morris cassettes, as ey didn’ a e a prin ed guide oo n , e o e par as a en into private hands and further developed. Today, Spring Grove House has been refurbished and offers wedding receptions, dinner dances, and all the associated additional business that is vital to keep the park functioning and the animals well-fed. specialist consultant veterinary staff e par uses or speci c anima s and conditions, especially for the breeding programmes. Drive around the park and you will see university students spending weeks sitting in cars watching animals like the cheetahs, or the rare white lions, to study animal behaviour. No less than 25 of the species at the park are in the international active reeding programme er our day i Bo , e as o o ermany o oo a a pack of wolves that they were thinking of bringing to the park. The international breeding programme means he is o en in ami ia ere’s so muc going on e ind e scenes’, missed y e many id and’s sc oo c i dren that were also enjoying a day with the animals during our visit. s you ou d e pec , spending a ascina ing day i a man i e Bo and the anecdotes become infectious; he enjoys telling them, and we enjoyed listening. There was the time that the local police called him in the middle of the night to dart and tranquilise some 26 Rottweilers that had got loose. Then

there was the time when the park had a dri e roug ’ mon ey e i i s ever, the monkeys loved the cars and would pull anything off that was loose. One of the rangers noticed that when one monkey pulled off the rear number plate of a car, it revealed another num er p a e undernea uic ca to the local police discovered that the car was stolen. The police were waiting at the end of the drive to apprehend the anima o ing car ie o may a e c anged during Bo ’s tenure at the park, with the place transorming rom a c ao ic andscape ed somewhat randomly with wild animals, to an international zoological respected ins i u ion Bu one cons an in a o is is Bo ’s dedica ion o e par , and is admiration for the animals – and Land Rovers – that roam it. In 2016, Bob retired from his post as Director of Wildlife, after 40 years of service to the West Midland Safari and eisure ar . e’d reco end a visit, just beware of those short-sighted off-roading rhinos!

Getting a Grip Our project Freelander 2 gets a new set of boots – and owner Tim Gibson is delighted with their performance any years ago, I was deputy editor of a forerunner o is pu ica ion’s sister magazine, 4X4. The maga ine’s i e as Total Off Road and we focused our attention on gnarly offroad heroes that would swallow your average soft-roader for breakfast. With such a role came a sense of duty to own a vehicle that was suitably rugged, but the budget of a en y some ing mo oring ac didn’ stretch far. I made do with a 1994-reg Suzuki Vitara, shod with oversized Cooper mud-terrain tyres and a threeinch lift. Whisper it softly, but that little Suzuki was nigh on unstoppable. I would expose my failings as a driver far earlier an reac ed e e ic e’s imi s, and it routinely kept up with trucks that were much more extreme in their countenance. But thanks to the deep welts in its rubber ware, it was hell to drive on the asphalt. So when it came to sourcing new tyres for my Freelander 2, I had a c oice o ma e ’m eager o ma e i a credible performer off-road. But I rely on it for daily drives that frequently cover many hundreds of miles. I needed to compromise. I settled on an all-terrain pattern, with an even bias between off- and on road use nd ecause ey’d

M

always provided a brilliant combination of value, longevity and performance on my pre ious s, didn’ oo muc further than Cooper Tires. A wise decision in the end: Cooper is one of the few manufacturers to offer an all-terrain tread in the size I needed for my Freelander 2 (235/60R18). These take the form of the XL Discoverer A/ T3 Sport Owl, and I duly swapped out all four of the Goodyear Wranglers that were in situ to ensure consistency in handling and performance. en say ’, mean immer, one of the mechanics at Rudkin Vehicle Services who do such a splendid job of caring for my ageing Landy. It took im a o minu es o and a ance the new tyres, and I was ready to test them out. A minor excursion up a local green lane on the way home revealed the isco erer ’s po en ia en conditions get challenging. It was a dry a e summer morning so ere asn’ much gloop. Even so, I felt far more con den an i e orn ood years in place. s or on road per ormance, can’ au e oopers ere’s per aps e slightest amount of feedback under acceleration at around 65mph. But it soon passes, and is no more an ’d expect from tyres that have a surprisingly aggressive tread pattern.

But for now, Cooper has more than lived up to expectations, and the tyres fully justify my decision to make the sensible choice of all-terrains over mud-terrains. Mind you, the more extreme tastes of my Total Off Road days have left a mark. When asked whether I wanted the raised white lettering on the sidewall facing in or out, I paused for at least a minute before agreeing to hide it. I guess everyone has to grow up some day, eh? Next month: travel woe and a burst turbo pipe On the pull: in last onth’s e la nation of towing weights, I neglected to make clear that the limit for towing if you passed your test after an uary 1997 is a combined Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of 3500kg for car and trailer. Which means that to tow most caravans, a Freelander 2 like mine (with a MAM of around 2.5 tonnes ould be too hea y and you’d need to obtain an additional cat egory driving licence. Syncro Shift Up a Gear: Part Eight Team Syncro Racing enter their final challenge of the year, as they do battle in Poland for the prospect of an Ultra4 rostrum finish Words: Kim Sammons Pictures: Journaldu4x4, Pawcio Frackowiak and TSR his year we have followed the guys at TSR as they worked effortlessly to build their race truck up from a bare chassis to a race-ready warrior, in time for competing at both the King of France event in May and the King of Britain event in June. But now we join TSR on eir na race o is years’ ra Europe race season, 1000 miles away in Poland! The King of Poland race was held at Olszyna Motopark, where TSR would race in four heats across two days, i e ope o a podium nis or e race and u ima e y or e ra European Championship. Prior to the showdown, both the team, drivers and truck were feeling con den ey cou d de i er as een a an as ic year,’ s ared a s iercy, dri er n o e other races the truck was not set up correctly, so we were hindered with many issues a o races, u na y now we start the race with a truck that is ready o per orm ’ Joining Shabs in the hot seat was Si Sagar, who was stepping in as co-driver for TSR at the King of Poland event. Si has many years of experience in teaching off-road driving for Land Rover Experience so the team were excited for him to be part of the crew. With 23-degree heat, the guys were blessed with hot, dry and sunny

weather – unexpected for this time of year. Dry conditions also meant lots of dust, with drivers having to take extra precautions around the track to avoid driving blind into dust clouds left by their competitors. Heading into Race Day 1, the track at Poland had lots of fast sections, gnarly rocks, thick forest sections and deep valleys – the perfect platform for exciting racing. TSR managed to get in all of eir aps in e rs ea , u un or u nately had brake issues on the second meaning some running time was lost. ne o e ra e ines arced on e winch terminal leading to a rupture in the line, so we needed to do an “in-theed ,’ said i nder ra ru es e dri er and co dri er mus is emse es en out on course, so there can be no outside assistance, which was frustrating for the TSR pit crew who were watching the action from feet away. With a temporary in p ace, a s and i se off to try and get in their last lap before time ran out. With everyone cheering and watching the clock anxiously, unfortunately ey crossed e nis ine seconds over time, but in the hope to make it count, they managed to knock a sizeable 1 minute 10 seconds off their fastest lap time. A long night ahead was in the air for TSR, who worked tirelessly on the truck

The second day of racing was ac ion ed or e eam e ruc as ro ed in e as e d sec ion and they were plagued by steering issues throughout the second day. e ere a ing o pi a er eac ap o re e s eering i uid,’ said a s n spi e o e regu ar pi s ops, the team kept decent lap times to ac ie e an o era posi ion ou o seven in the Legends class for the King of Poland race. With the award ceremony held at the beautiful Czocha Castle, TSR against all odds managed achieved a podium position for the European Championship! Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. s ’s engineering gi es i a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’ as readi y a ai a e as ey once
