The UK’s largest range of Land Rover chassis
Series 1, 2, 2a, 3 Defender Discovery 2
It seemed unbelievable once. But as the latest model becomes more distant than ever from what a Land Rover once was, the first-gen Sport now looks almost truck-like. And yes, there are ways in which you can turn one into a green lane weapon to reckon with…

Even the toughest nuts in the Army might shudder at the prospect of deep wading in the sort of water temperatures that go with a climate knocking on for fifty below. And this version of the Wolf was equipped to do it at a depth of up to 1.5 metres. Five feet, in other words. There are snorkels, and there’s the snorkel on this thing. If necessary, in the space of about an hour the Waterproofed Wolf could be prepared to operate while completely submerged. Obviously, once the driver’s head was under the surface he would have no way of knowing how close it was coming to the air intake somewhere above him, and there’s also the small matter of being able to breathe, but for short bursts of action the capability was certainly there. Another interesting feature of these Defenders is that they were built with struts to keep their tailgate down during wading. This was to let water flow in to the back body, thus preventing it from floating away, and also to let it pour back out again as quickly as possible once reaching land. Hard-top models were fitted with an escape hatch about the driver’s and passenger’s seats. Preventing the engine from sucking in water and suffering a catastrophic hydraulic lock is the most critical matter when you’re wading a vehicle, but protecting it long-term is every bit as important. Hence the use of grease

Land Rover Yearbook
?ioning all ioned: oesn’t time fly? Remember when the ‘new’ Defender came out? And here we are celebrating a 75th Limited Edition. Gazes into whisky glass, frowning slightly and feeling slight befuddled. Perhaps the second dram was an error. What year is this again? What did you say, the Year of the Tiger? How is that helpful? Yet here we are. And, more to the point, here is the Defender 75th Limited Edition. Is this a new model? Well, no not really, so what’s the point, I ask somewhat querulously. Ah, Land Rover says this is ‘a highly collectible Defender’. Ah, right, see what they’re doing now. Taps nose. So what has Land Rover done, apart from cover everything that isn’t moving or soft in Grasmere Green paint? Jolly fine it looks too, it must be said. Ah, the company can kit me out with a matching watch ‘featuring two straps’ (eh?) plus backpack and clothing, all with 75 graphics and detailing. Somehow I sense members will look down their nose if I arrive at White’s so attired. (Don’t look up my club, it doesn’t even have a website.) But everyone at White’s (and everyone there is someone) has or has had

a Land Rover, so perhaps they might find it amusing. But if I start talking about ‘Resist Ebony’ I might get blackballed. However, that’s the colour of the seating inside so what can I do? Some of the fellow members were probably members back in 1948 when the first Land Rover appeared – certainly a few of the members don’t seem to have moved since then. Back then of course any talk of electric power focused on the rather inadequate battery. Yet here we are, in the Century of the Fruitbat, looking at the P400e Electric Hybrid or the D300 mild hybrid. Whichever you go for, it’s all in the best HSE high-spec taste, with an absolute steamer trunk full of stuff that is now standard, including head-up display, 3D surround camera, configurable terrain response and lots of other kit that would be of considerable help at White’s when you want to navigate to the Gents at the end of a long evening. The memsahib would be absolutely tickled too to enjoy the folding fabric roof or the sliding panoramic roof, below which we could sit in some comfort whatever the weather, thanks to the heated electric memory seats, heated steering wheel and three-zone climate

control. Don’t get those at White’s either, damn those wingbacks. Oh and Land Rover has also thrown in all kinds of options such as the towing pack, Secure Tracker Pro, headlamp power wash and oodles more. Now, we don’t want to get all trade and start talking about costs because that would be vulgar, but should you be searching for an amusing runaround to add to the stable then prices start at an astonishingly reasonable £85,995 for the 90 version and £89,995 for the 110, although obviously you’d want to add more since nobody wants a ‘starting’ price Land Rover do they? Anyway, for that sort of money you could only get a decent dinner at Rowley’s and a night at the club, so why not? Here’s to the next 75. Cheers!

Do you know where this Series IIA lives nowadays?
he former owners of this 1969 Series IIA Safari Staion Wagon are appealing for help in finding out where it is today. Dan Kelland says ‘Larry’ was part of his family throughout the 1980s but was sold in 1990 – and like so many former Land Rover owners, he’d like to track it down. First registered in June 1969, the truck is recorded by the DVLA as having a 2286cc petrol engine. Its colour is given as white, as shown in Dan’s picture, though as always with Land Rovers there’s no way of telling how
T
many more coats of paint have gone on in the 32 years since he last saw it. Dan says he believes the vehicle may have been exported to Africa, though it’s currently on SORN in the UK and shows its new logbook as having been issued in 2012. So while it may have left the country temporarily, as far as the official version is concerned it is still here somewhere. Do you know of its whereabouts? With the owner’s permission, let us know at enquiries@assignment-media. co.uk and we’ll pass it on.

Warrantywise names Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in list of most unreliable nearly-new cars
YOU KNOW HOW THIS GOES, because it goes the same every single time. Yup, no spoiler alert, the least reliable used vehicle is the previous generation of Range Rover. Yes, it’s in top spot of the Warrantywise, the company providing extended warranty plans. They surveyed over 130,000 vehicles, all less than ten years old but out of warranty and all selling reasonable numbers. Nowhere to hide. Range Rover No 1 spot. BMW’s M3 takes second but don’t despair – there’s another Range Rover, the Sport, in No 3. Two podiums, yay. Nonetheless, were you to look at the Top 10 you’d see no less than nine premium vehicles in it. And an inordinate number of them are SUVs, too. It wouldn’t be fair to get the knives out for the Range Rover without also asking what this might say about the methodology that puts such elevated machines at a disadvantage.

Gibson’s Gab Life Sentence
It may be outmoded to think you’ll keep a car for the long term. But a Range Rover Classic would make a smart choice for a lifetime’s motoring Words: Tim Gibson WE LIVE IN AN AGE OF BUILT-IN OBSOLESCENCE. Our mobile phones are expected to last a couple of years max, our computers are out of date before we even open the box and our cheap clothes may as well be made from tissue paper for all their longevity. It’s the same with cars. When I was a kid, my Dad’s Shogun was a stalwart of our lives. When the arches rusted, he had them welded. When the clutch went (halfway up a Yorkshire hill with a twin-axle caravan on the back), we had it mended. When the seats got saggy, we shoved in a couple of scatter cushions and hoped for the best. Look at photographs from my youth and that trusty old straight-diesel high-
roof Mitsubishi import is ever present. It was a friend for life and only left us when the call of the scrapyard became impossible to ignore. Nowadays, though, few expect to keep their car for the long term. The average new-car buyer in the UK upgrades every two years – giving a good indication of our changing attitude towards ownership. Witness the rise of leasing and PCP deals. They promise the opportunity to drive a brand-new motor pretty much all the time, and the car-buying public is well and truly addicted. For many, such an arrangement represents the only realistic way of affording an all-electric car – which, as I’ve said before on these pages, gives the lie to the notion that they’ll green up the automotive sector.
But that’s an issue for another day. Because I want you to suppose, just for a moment, that you’ve decided to take on a car for the long term. A decade minimum, maybe 15 or even 20 years. A car that your kids can drive when they pass their test; one that becomes a member of the family. Maybe even acquires its own pet name. Where would you look for such a vehicle? Whisper it softly, but my own driveway bears witness to the suitability of a certain Japanese rally-inspired 4x4 estate car for this purpose (it’s the missus’ motor, honest). But there are plenty of options if you’re a green oval lover, too. Take the 200 Tdi Range Rover Classic I saw advertised recently. At 30 years old, it could already have served
one owner for life. But I reckon, with the right care, it would see me through to retirement. Simple mechanics, easy-to-replace running gear and doughty reliability – all for an asking price of £10,000. Sure, you could very easily double that spend once you get the vehicle up on a ramp to fettle for daily use. Even then, you’d have a beautiful piece of Great British automotive history for Ford Focus money.
When push came to shove, though, I didn’t seriously contemplate viewing this vehicle. I’m sure someone has snapped it up by now, probably to park up in a barn in the hope of making a few quid. And in the time it’s sat there quietly accruing value, I’ll probably go through five or six vehicles, losing thousands with every change. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it, if we’re making any progress at all.

W
hat is it about old Land Rovers that makes them so hard to forget? I don’t mean ‘old’ as in the Series I your neighbour has spent the last decade restoring – I’m talking about the one you used to own, back in the day, but you sold it to fund a house purchase or whatever and you’ve been missing it ever since. I’ve told the story before of M146 HPL, the 90 that was my company car when I was editor of Land Rover World back in the 1990s. I had it from new when I got the job, and over the next few years the adventures we had together bonded us forever. I bought it when I left the job and meant to keep it forever, but it was the only way I could raise the cash for the deposit on my first flat – and the night before it went to its new home, I looked into its headlamps and cried. That was in 1999, and I still look in the listings every few days hoping to see it for sale. It’s a forlorn hope, probably, but perhaps one day we’ll be reunited. So anyway, that’s why it rings so true to me when I come across stories of people trying to track down their old Land Rovers. You may already have read the article on the previous page, about a chap who’d like to find the IIA his family owned when he was a kid, and I absolutely get how he feels. The bizarre thing is that almost no other kind of vehicle has the same effect on people. I’ve owned a Porsche in my time, a Corvette, an MR2… not to mention a couple of Discos and a Range Rover. And none of them have a place in my heart like my old 90. It’s been said that a Land Rover is less like a car and more like a family pet, and I think that’s spot on. Except unlike family pets, you never have to say goodbye. Unless the circumstances dictate, of course – which perhaps makes it more painful than ever, because the loss comes with the feeling that you’ve made a terrible mistake. In these times of financial peril, it’s a mistake many of you may be considering making. And ultimately, it might be the only way to stay afloat. But take it from me. Cashing in on your Land Rover really should only ever be the last resort. Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk

Final batch of 110s from Twisted Automotive’s collection of last-run Defenders gets ready to go on sale
Equipped with Land Rover Dealer Software This means we are able to diagnose and repair any Land Rover model up to the present year! We believe in a one to one service with a considerable saving to your pocket compared to that of a main dealer.

Unit 4, Fernhill Street, Bury, Lancashire, BL9 5BG Land Rover is a registered trademark of JLR Ltd
n 2015, Charles Fawcett, founder and MD of Twisted Automotive, went on a tour of Land Rover not long before the production lines fell silent for the last time. He focused on the line producing 110s. He took out his titanium-plated cheque book and bought 200 Defenders. As you and I don’t. Most were converted and sold through Twisted, but 16 of them went into a barn where they were not forgotten. Gradually they amassed a small patina of dust, nostalgia and £50 notes. Now, with the patina thick enough, those 16 are for sale. They won’t be sold as stock but as Twisted Land Rovers, twisted to the individual owner’s requirements. Let’s get this out of the way for dreamers. Prices start at £135,000 + VAT and rise to £185,000 + VAT. All 16 were registered in 2016, after production had ceased, and were chosen for their chassis numbers and build dates. These really are unique models, which is why, once they have had the Twisted treatment making them even more individual, the vehicle run is called One of One. Twisted is one of those companies that sensibly and cleverly rides on the raft that is the Land Rover heritage. But they add a modern pointy end so that you can actually enjoy all that heritage in the 21st Century. Take one example. Twisted say this about their interiors: ‘One of One is stripped out, panels are realigned and the vehicle is made thoroughly
I
waterproof. Once completed, Twisted’s dual-layer soundproofing is fitted.’ Imagine saying you’d had to realign the panels or whatever if it was a Toyota Land Cruiser or similar. Naturally the interiors will be complemented in leather with buckets of electronic aids, many of them for communication or for listening to your favourite music – Twisted can’t help with your musical taste so Engelbert Humperdinck it is then through the eight-channel premium audio system. Naturally you’ll need to turn it up rather less thanks to all the sound-deadening and thick carpets, but the noisy thing at the front will still make its presence felt. Thankfully, in some good ways. The TVS 2.3-litre four-pot turbocharged petrol engine will pump out 308bhp and 350lb ft of torque through the six-speed manual box. You
get benefits like forged steel crankshafts and conrods but, on a mundane level, this vehicle is ULEZ compliant so you can drive into London in style. Or you could go for the 174bhp 2.2-litre turbo-diesel with 310lb ft of torque, also firing through a six-speed manual gearbox. As a consequence of more go, there’s more to stop it all, with six-pot front discs and four-pot rears. The uprated suspension also aids control, with dual-rate springs, custom shocks and uprated anti-roll bars. There’s a lot of detailing that goes into a Twisted Land Rover, so you’d need to go and talk through all the attention to detail you’d be buying for your, gulp, 200 grand. If you want to talk that talk then check out www. twisted.co.uk or send an email to info@twistedautomotive.com.

art of the annual Royal Welsh Smallholding and Countryside Festival at Builth Wells, the 2022 Welsh Festival of Land Rovers turned out to be a great success. The event saw around 80% of previous exhibitors returning to help the hosting South Wales Land Rover Club and the Family Land Rover Club of Birmingham put on an outstanding display. Between them, the clubs had a superb array of vehicles ranging from Series Is through to more modern Freelander 2s and Range Rover Sports. In addition to these, there was a fantastic set of specialist ex-military vehicles on show – including Lightweights, a Wolf FFR rebuilt after being almost totally destroyed in Afghanistan and two rare Marshalls 127 ambulance camper conversions.

From Series One to Defender, our replica harnesses are handmade at our British manufacturing site

Other highlights included a fire engine and a Series I currently undergoing a superb nut and bolt restoration – which was brought out unfinished only because no rain was going to get into its as-yet unprotected electrics. Also joining the show for the first time were the Project Jay Preservation Group with their early Discoverys. They were able to sign up a new member on the weekend, because 12-year-old Rhys Williams of the SWLRC is Discovery 1 mad – to the point that his mum has persuaded his dad to purchase one, which the two of them will rebuild and have ready for when he is old enough to legally drive it on the road. A highlight on the Sunday was the arrival of ‘Fluffy,’ a 101/110 hybrid camper conversion. Her owner was originally planning to be there for the whole weekend, complete with the family Freelander 1, however this was sadly involved in an accident on the Friday night. The whole show was in raptures when the two vehicles showed
up on the Saturday evening, with the Freelander’s front end having been rebuilt by Zeb (father of Xavier, who had been driving at the time) – an incredible feat of hard work! The show’s fundraising efforts were equally well received, with club charity heroine Pauline joining in the display drives and the Royal Welsh Show’s Ambassador joining her in another Series I to help pull out the winning raffle ticket. Withe more than £150 raised for the air ambulance fund, it was as worthwhile as it was entertaining! The Welsh Festival of Land Rovers was hosted by South Wales Land Rover Club (www.swlrc.co.uk). With thanks to the Family Land Rover Club of Birmingham (www.thefamilylandroverclub.com) and the Project Jay Preservation group (pjpg.co.uk).

Unit F2, Swinton Bridge Industrial Estate, Whitelee Road, Swinton, Mexborough, S64 8BH
APOLLO TYRES HAS LAUNCHED its first dedicated all-terrain, the Vredestein Pinza. Designed to be ‘comfortably rugged’, this is an all-weather, all-terrain fitment for Land Rovers and other 4x4s that are used on and off-road. The tyre is based on a three-ply carcase and features a three-pitched shoulder and sharp edge blocks for efficient self-cleaning and additional grip on loose surfaces. It’s also designed for low noise and good road manners, in particular for all-round grip and responsive steering. Already well established in the USA, the Pinza is available here in two forms: ‘P’ and ‘LT’. The latter is intended for working vehicles which are primarily used in more demanding offroad conditions, with the ‘P’ has a more road-biased design to suit passenger-carrying SUVs. In each case, the Pinza carries the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake logo, meaning it’s approved for use as a winter tyre in nations where this is a thing. It’s initially available in 24 sizes, with more to follow.

CHRISTMAS MIGHT STILL SEEM reassuringly far away, but it says ‘December’ on the front of this here copy of The Landy and you don’t need to spend much time in the shops to see that Slade are going to be launching a renewed assault on your eardrums any time soon. So it’s that time of year again when you start thinking about what to buy for the Land Rover fan in your life who already has everything. A brand new Land Rover may no longer be on the agenda, with interest rates the way they are. But thanks to Britpart, you can have the next best thing. No, not a nearly-new Land Rover. Though that would be good too. The range of die-cast models you’re looking at here is detailed and collectable, and it covers a number of Land Rovers you’re probably only ever going to be able to afford in 1:76 scale. The full list is: Discovery 4 (Firenze Red) Range Rover Sport SVR (Indus Silver) Range Rover Sport SVR (Fuji White) Range Rover Velar SE (Fuji White) Discovery 5 (Namib Orange) Defender 90 (Pangea Green) Defender 110 X (Gondwana Stone) Defender 110 (Indus Silver) We’ve just looked on Google Earth and there’s nothing very silver about the Indus at all, in fact it’s a rather worrying shade of brown. And Fuji is very dark grey, even if the top bit tends to have snow on it. Which brings us back to Christmas. The Land Rover fan in your life who already has everything is about to have a little more besides.

From London life to lockdown project
After the Army kept this 110 confined to the capital, it settled into an easy life on civvy street – before being turned into an expedition truck with equipment and character in equal measure Words: Tom Alderney Pics: Mark Woodland
ilitary Land Rovers are always very well looked after, but there’s always the nagging worry that they might have been hammered without mercy in between all the services. When Mark Woodland bought his 110, however, he could be fairly sure that it had had an easy life – because for the seven years during which it served in the Army, it was stationed exclusively in London. ‘The vehicle served its time in the military from 1991 to 1998, when it was first registered for the road,’ says Mark. ‘All in London – so no war stories, unfortunately!’ He probably doesn’t mind too much when he climbs underneath the truck to see a chassis which, in his own words, ‘is like the day it left the factory, with no rust underneath at all.’ Between that and a nice low mileage (a mere 74,000, or more accurately 119,000 kilometres), he’s the owner of what’s looking like a very lightly used Land Rover. Its engine is a 200Tdi (with PAS and a five-speed box), so those practically count as running-in miles. Certainly this is sort of Defender you can just own and enjoy – or treat as the perfect base for a project. Which is what he did. Specifically, what you’re looking at here is what Mark did in lockdown. Which was to turn the 110 into a very cool and extremely well equipped expedition vehicle. Starting from the ground up, he ordered a set of 265/75R16 BFGoodrich
M
All-Terrains. An old faithful among the expedition set, this – strong, hard-wearing and great both on and off-road. Being a standard size, there was no need for any messing around with the suspension, but Mark fitted a set of Old Man Emu springs and shocks to make it that much more robust – no small matter when his plans included adding a great deal of weight to the vehicle. Some of this came from a steel bull bar up front, a roll cage up top and a set of rock and tree sliders along the sides. On went a set of diff guards, too. Plenty of metal there, and the vehicle also runs a long-range fuel tank and 100-litre water tank – both of which, when full, add significantly to its weight. But we’re not here to talk about how heavy Mark’s 110 is. We’re here to talk about how cool it is. And when you look up top, you see the adventures stretching out ahead of you like the Great Rift Valley on a clear day. There’s a Mantec-style snorkel, of course, redolent of heart-in-mouth experiences as you brave the crocodiles to ford the Luangwa on your journey through Africa. Then there’s an Expedition Roof Rack by Terrafirma, on top of which Mark installed a 2.4-metre Howling Moon tent and awning combo. Fast forward to nights spent tucked up in the Ngorongoro, listening to lions roaring in the distance, and chilled evenings watching the sun set over the wild lands of the Khan Kentii. Interestingly, Mark has also set up
the interior of the vehicle with a double bed in the back. This converts into seating when he needs it to, so in theory four people could travel together on board without anyone having to lose a night’s sleep. It might get a bit snug, though, when you consider what else there is on board. Like a 32-litre 12/240v Engel fridge/freezer, for example. There’s also a T-Max split-charging system, with two leisure batteries and one starter, as well as solar charging, on-board air and a 3000W Inverter with four outlets. ‘It runs a kettle or Nespresso coffee machine,’ says Mark, getting right to the heart of what matters most to overland travellers. Something else that matters is a good pair of seats, and the 110 has been fitted with leather-trimmed recliners which started life in a Toyota Celica, of all things. Combining them with a wood-rimmed steering wheel makes for a quaintly old-school cabin, though with the MOD lighting console now housing an Alpine stereo and a reversing camera mounted on the dash-top above it, it’s modern enough too. The latter item is flanked by a CB
radio and a monitor for the split-charge system, too. Then, more or less everywhere you look, you’ll see either LED lights or USB sockets. Or both. You can never have too many of either, and Mark chucked in as many as he could find places for. And this is a 110, a thing with a lot of places. Oh, and did we mention the Focal speakers and Alpine sub? When those lions roar, this Defender can roar back. Well, it could, but Mark admits that he’s only taken it as far as Wales. Add in a couple of trips to Silverstone for the Grand Prix and you could definitely argue that he’s been underusing his Land Rover just a bit. ‘Sandy (his name for the truck) deserves to be taken on serious road trips like to Scotland or Morocco, or driven to Cape Town,’ he admits,
which is one of the few times you’ll see Marrakech and Motherwell being referenced in the same sentence. And he’s right; there’s more to be done before it’s ready for a full expedition, but all the basics are in place here – along with plenty of the right details, too. So when’s he going? He’s not. Having put in the time and effort (and money) it takes to build a Land Rover like this, he’s after moving it on. Why, we don’t know, but someone’s going to be very happy they picked up this copy of The Landy. Is that someone you? If you’ve got £25,995 knocking about and you can get yourself down to Lightwater in Surrey, it might be. But first, you need to get yourself to the classifieds on page 28 of this issue. Don’t expect war stories, but do expect a lifetime of adventures to lie ahead.

THE GREAT BRITISH LAND ROVER SHOW
NAEC STONELEIGH
20 NOVEMBER 2022
L ’ eople said 2022 was going to be rough. And how right they were. But despite all the bad news coming at us from seemingly every direction, the Land Rover scene continues to be buoyant. And as always, the response we’ve had to the Great British Land Rover Show, from traders and punters alike, has been phenomenal. Last year, the show posted its highest ever attendance. This year, it’s looking good to be better than ever. Our big autumn event has become the traditional way of bringing down the curtain on the Land Rover show season, seeing familiar faces one more time before winter and getting great deals on the kit you’ll be bolting to your truck while it’s squirreled away in your garage. The venue is, as usual, the NAEC in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. The date is Sunday 20 November. And the event is a festival of all things Land Rover with more to see, and more going on, than ever before! As always, there’ll be a wide range of trade stands in the exhibition halls
P
waiting to tempt you with some of the best products on the market. And we’ve reserved a section for the clubs that are the lifeblood of the Landy scene – providing the perfect place to meet old friends after what’s been a long time away. Our ever-popular off-road course will be in action again, too, once again run and marshalled by the All Wheel Drive Club. And new for this year, there’ll be three levels of difficulty to suit every kind of Land Rover. Land Rover Experience will be back, too, to offer you the chance for a passenger ride on its unique Terrapod. And also new this year is a kids’ driving course in mini Landies, right next to the main entrance to the show halls. We’ve got VIP Land Rover parking, too, and visitors will vote for their favourite from every vehicle in this area – with prizes from Paddocks 4x4 for the winners. There’s a full run-down of the attractions overleaf. And don’t forget – you can save money by purchasing your tickets in advance when you visit greatbritishlrshow.com. See you there!

THE GREAT BRITISH LAND ROVER SHOW
NAEC STONELEIGH
20 NOVEMBER 2022
More to see and do than ever before!
Off-Road Trail – sponsored by Terrafirma Are you looking to prepare your Land Rover for serious action? Whether its for laning, playdays or cutting-edge competition, follow our Off Road Trail, sponsored by Terrafirma, to find all of the latest equipment you’ll need for your off-roading thrills.
Land Rover Experience With intense inclines, dramatic descents, sideways tilts and more, the Land Rover Experience is all about experiencing our vehicles’ signature capability first hand. After all, where’s the fun in flat? Be driven round the Land Rover Experience by one of Land Rover’s specialist instructors. The Dynamic Display Equipment has been designed to showcase the technology and capabilities of all Land Rover products. Each piece of equipment in the portfolio brings its own obstacles and dimensions to your Experience. The pieces at this event will include: Mini Terrapod 2, Articulating Ramps and Side Slope. Extreme articulations will enable the vehicles’ suspension systems to extend and traction systems to initiate. Hill climbing ability, Hill Start Assist and Gradient Release Control – allowing the gradual release of the brakes for a composed and controlled descent – are just a few of many features that can be seen during the activity. On some obstacles, the vehicle is taken through the unit as well as over it. As the vehicle drives through the centre of the Mini Terrapod 2, it must negotiate
its route across a set of rollers. This perfectly demonstrates the ability of the Land Rover range to tackle low grip surfaces and showcases features such as Electronic Traction Control. Ask the Experience’s knowledgeable instructors about technology, features, extras and vehicles past and present. They know their stuff and will be more than happy to help! Tickets for the Land Rover Experience at the show cost £5 in advance or £7.50 on the day.
The course is suitable for all levels of driver ability and experience. And marshals from the All Wheel Drive Club will be on hand to offer advice and tips on how to drive off-road – as well as helping you out should you be unfortunate enough to become stuck! Advance tickets are only £10 (£15 on the day) and can be purchased at the same time as your half-price advance tickets for entry to the Great British Land Rover Show. Advance booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment and to be able to select your preferred start time around the course.
Adventure and Outdoor Leisure Trail Maybe you’re looking for your next adventure, whether it be on a tour in the UK or abroad led by an expert tour guide? Or perhaps you’re wanting to buy the latest kit for your own overland expedition. Either way, follow our Adventure and Outdoor Leisure Trail to find everything you need…
Miniature Land Rovers Does your little one want to drive a Land Rover like their parents? Then
now’s their chance… New for 2022 is the chance to drive a mini Land Rover round a mini course located in front of the entrance to the show.
NEW! VIP Land Rover parking and ‘Best in Show’ visitors’ vote – sponsored by Paddock Spares Coming to the show in your Landy? For an extra £5, limited parking is available adjacent to the show halls for Land Rovers only – and all vehicles parked here will be entered into a visitors’ vote to find the stars of the show! The competition is sponsored by Paddock Spares, who will be providing prizes for the most popular Land Rovers.
Land Rover Clubs Area – sponsored by Paddock Spares
Off-Road Course – run by the AWDC Our ever-popular off-road course gives you an opportunity to put your own Land Rover through its paces. And new for this year, you can choose between three levels of difficulty – meaning it’ll be a challenge for everything from a factory-fresh Range Rover to a hardcore modified 90.
Clubs are the lifeblood of the Land Rover scene. And once again, we are offering free space to promote your club, attracting new members from the thousands of visitors to the Great British Land Rover Show! The club section of the show, sponsored by Paddock Spares, has limited capacity and all spaces are available on a first come basis. All clubs with a club stand at the show will receive: • Enough space for two vehicles along with 4 exhibitor passes • A listing on the show website • An exclusive link, in conjunction with Paddock Spares, for your club members to buy advance tickets at only £5 each! And it’s not too late for clubs to get involved. Contact Ian Argent on 01283 553242 or email ian.argent@assignment-media.co.uk to register for your club stand – but don’t forget, it’s first come, first served!

chassis are manufactured in the UK at our own factory near the ‘steel city’ of Sheffield, using locally sourced parts and materials. Over the years we have gathered a huge amount of knowledge
and experience, which has helped us to become the largest manufacturer of aftermarket Land Rover chassis. We are constantly investing in improving our processes and products – in the last few years we have completely redesigned and rebuilt all of our main assembly jigs and manipulators, and have installed a new fibre laser with a 4m bed. This investment has enabled us to improve both product quality and productivity, allowing us to manufacture up to 50 chassis each week. We offer a very wide range of chassis, from the very earliest Series Ones to the last of line Defenders, as well as Series 2a/2b Forward Controls and Discovery 2. With our newly revised jigs we also have the ability to fully jig certain ‘custom’ chassis, such as 6x6, and winch challenge chassis, and are happy to work with our customers to develop other bespoke chassis, for example for Land Rover based electric vehicle builds.

I’m sure many people will be pleased to know that we will very soon be manufacturing bulkheads. We’ve been working closely with our toolmaker for the last two years to develop what we believe will be the best bulkhead on the market – all of the panels are fully

pressed to provide a product which is as accurate as possible to the original with a high degree of precision and repeatability. We will initially be producing bulkheads for Defender 2.5NA, 200tdi and 300tdi, with further variants coming soon after.

You don’t often see Range Rover Sports being used off-road. But with the same underpinnings as the Discovery 3, Land Rover’s original premium soft-roader was actually a very capable vehicle – and with a few well chosen mods, it could turn out to be all the lane wagon you’ll ever need ur first experience of the Range Rover Sport was on a press launch in Spain. Land Rover must have been worried about the media not taking the vehicle seriously as an off-road machine, because we were treated to a pretty eye-popping set of challenges which, carefully stage-managed though they were, left no-one in any doubt as to what it could do.
Nonetheless, seeing one actually being used off-road is something very few of us have ever done. If you’re going to use a modern-era Land Rover the way you used to use proper ones, odds-on it’ll be a Discovery 3 or 4. Yet as we all know, both models were made of the same stuff underneath – so why not? That’s a question which becomes a little more rhetorical when you see this
one. Built a few years ago by James Holt, it’s a 2.7 TDV6 HSE from the 2007 model year. As it demonstrates, a certain amount of kit does exist for turning this kind of vehicle into, well, THIS kind of vehicle – and while it’s by no means a full-house machine, it has enough going on to turn a Chelsea tractor into a highly capable lane machine. If nothing else, what it makes clear is that it only takes a few
well chosen improvements to liberate a remarkable amount of the off-road potential built in to the engineering down below. During the half-decade during which the Rangey had been in James hands by the time we caught up with him, he had put 92,000 miles on it. Often with smelly labradors in the back, says James. Ripe for off-roading in every sense, then…
James, who describes himself as a ‘part-time farmer’, says the Sport was his first proper off-road vehicle. He had previously owned a Volvo XC70 (‘for what they are,’ he says, ‘fitted with M S tyres they will go down most lanes’) and he must have liked it as he replaced it with another one used mainly for motorway miles. Each to their own, I guess – but anyway, the Rangey is very much his workhorse.

‘Being a farmer means I have to do a lot of towing,’ he points out. ‘As it also involves driving in muddy fields, I set my Range Rover up to be as practical as possible for what I need it to do. I’ve since joined Bonkas 4x4, so that I could truly understand its capabilities with a fun group of experienced offroaders. I’ve done pay’n’play and some lanes – plus obviously also plenty of driving around boggy fields.’

you’re talking about rocks or sand, but definitely wasn’t a combination chosen with mud in mind. The good news is that the tyre industry has caught up with the SUV boom, and these days you can get a set of all-terrains or even mud-terrains to go around those alloys. James’ Sport, for example, rolls on 19 rims – and he’s got not one but two sets of
So how do you prep a Range Rover Sport for this? We’re talking about a high-spec luxury SUV built for motorway cruising and one-upmanship on the school run, after all. The first answer is that the vehicle does have some pretty stunning ability in standard form. However it also has big alloys wrapped in wide, low-profile tyres – which isn’t so bad if

Sport into the latter, to be fair – and anyway, it’s not what James was trying to achieve in the first place. For a combination of playdays, laning and an all-round job of work down on the farm, these tyres are more than enough – and they stop well short of being silly, too, which is no small thing. Obviously, lifting a vehicle with allindependent air suspension isn’t as straightforward a business as it is on a less complex Land Rover, but it can still be done. One answer is to replace the air springs with coils, but James was more adventurous and fitted an Easy Lift kit. This is an electronic module which takes control of the air suspension, allowing it to be cycled through a range of seven programmable heights from -35 to +75mm. Made in Italy, the kit also offers a self-levelling function, allowing owners with a roof tent to sleep in it even when they’re parked on

uneven ground, and it can be operated using its own controller or an app. Up front, the engine is standard but for an EGR delete. Ahead of it is a lowline Warn winch mounted using an original equipment Land Rover cradle – not something you see every day, but with the Range Rover Sport’s history as a G4 Challenge vehicle this is the sort of kit that had to be developed for it. There’s also an aluminium sump guard up front, as well as a Trust AL1 towbar at the back. In between, one of the most vulnerable areas on a vehicle like this will inevitably be its sills – hence the appearance of a set of tree sliders from Landy Spares/AJS Fabrications, part of the company’s range of off-road equipment for the Range Rover Sport. All this happened slowly over time as James developed more and more of an understanding of the vehicle, what it can do and what else it needed to get the best from it. He says he does some of his own spannering, but that he also has ‘a great local mechanic’ who looks after the vehicle – and given the way it’s set up, you’d have to

acknowledge that he appears to look after it very well. As the original Range Rover Sport gets older and more affordable, will we see a flood of them starting to be used as off-road toys? Unlikely, you’d have to say, though if we don’t see a flood then at least the drip might turn in to a trickle. The fact that there are still loads of Discovery 3s out there is likely to mean that what you’re looking at here will always remain a rarity, though. Maybe it’s not just the vehicle that’s rare, however. Maybe it’s an owner who recognises the limits of what he wants or needs to do off-road and is happy to stay within them, building a Land Rover that makes the right compromises to do all its various jobs really well. It might not make sense if what you want is a hardcore 90, but if that’s NOT what you want then it makes a great deal of sense indeed. Which, you could say, has always been the Range Rover way. That Defender with the 37 tyres will always make it further into an old quarry – but next time you’re setting off on a six-hour journey for a weekend on the lanes, just think about James’ vehicle and ask yourself who’s going to come home with a bigger smile on their face.

Last of the leafers
A
fter 35 years of leafers, Land Rover introduced the 110 in 1983. A year later, the Series era came to an end – but there are a few vehicles left from the period when ancient was in the process of giving way to moden.
Whether it’s an early 110 or 90, or a late Series III, any Land Rover from back in the early 1980s is going to be a classic now. Or if it’s not, it’s going to be a classic in waiting. If you’ve got the ability to restore a Landy, doing so is of course immensely
Series I (1948-1958)
The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of
all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands
Series III (1971-1985)
The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical
terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular
Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands
90/110 (1983-1990)
This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can
also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.
rewarding – and potentially lucrative, too. A really good one, returned skilfully to its original condition, can £25-30,000 easily, and for a concours example with provenence you can be looking at twice as much. Leaving the filthy lucre to one side, a nicely restored Series truck is a cheap, charming and easy vehicle to live with as an everyday motor, so long as you don’t rack up huge mileages. And a Series III
£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s
£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models
£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A ’ ’ E over regular models means they command a price premium
£3000-£26,000 A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: E E U potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition
Insure an 88” Series III with Adrian Flux from £75 from after the dark days of the 1970s, but late enough to have the updated version of the 2.25 engine, is as good as it gets.
• Based on a restored 1984 Hard-Top. Valued at £25,000, limited to 4000 miles a year. 50 year old driver, fully comp, £150 excess
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
£2500-£40,000
much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of
refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing
Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)
£2500-£15,000
The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries
Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real
rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by
101 (1972-1978)
Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when
£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures
127 (1985-1990)
The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which
having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop… Pros: A Land Rover like no , ’ Cons: E ,
and fittings from their Army life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards. Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V E sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running E ,
£7500-£25,000 took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a 127 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 127 is more of an enthusiast’s
motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: E limitless potential and character Cons: U S had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£35,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)
The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for
decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 300. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.
Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)
The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though
the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve
Defender TDCi (2007-2016)
The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and
smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been
The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R380, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around
£4500-£40,000
When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the
130 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.
Defender Td5 (1998-2007)
become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road… Pros: Strength and simplicity. P D Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory
The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s

As a result, you’ll find many more original(ish) 130s than 127s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further. Pros: A proper truck with huge capabilities in every area Cons: ’ ’ actually need that much size

a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis. Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can
still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles

to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,
making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value long-term the way an original-shaper does, either. But this is still a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks ’

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)
The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.
It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much
£400-£5500 more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively
Freelander 2 (2006-2015)
The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model
£2000-£18,500
it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a
bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: R , , economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing
Range Rover Classic (1970-96)£5000-£265,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000
The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there
are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.
Range Rover L322 (2002-12)
The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-
liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…
RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)
The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s
a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.
RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)
When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting
the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and
An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models
£2250-£28,000 This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs
£12,500-£25,000 You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. E
£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with 4WD. Pros: E , , concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport
A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to
own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t
Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £22,000-£180,000
The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the
range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.
RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)
The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than
the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.
RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on)
Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new
The Velar a competent cruiser and has received numerous accolades
other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price
The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,
Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price
£22,500-£160,000
Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild
Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £30,500-£95,000 Discovery 1 (1989-1998) because of its particularly handsome exterior. It’s based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace but has greater off-road ability and is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with
spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get. Pros: Luxury, price, a Land R ’ Cons: E
with the same 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,
The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: P , , glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run
£31,600-£55,000 hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 Evoque escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive. Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid
£800-£18,000 and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts E Cons: T ’ been doused in sea water

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most
most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat
Discovery 5 (2017-on) The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple. There’s no end of electronics working
£1000-£12,000 models had air-suspension, with all the horrors that brings. Mainly, D2 owners will tell you about rogue electronics. And leaky sunroofs. They still love their trucks, though, which says a lot. Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, lots of choice Cons: Chassis rust, electronics, leaky sunroofs, air suspension
£24,500-£80,000
Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)
The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road
and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area. The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always
Discovery Sport (2015-19)
away in the background, but the effect is very convincing – as is an interior that’s very well into luxury car territory. Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery
The Discovery Sport packs seven seats into a Freelander-sized body and dishes up an appealing all-round blend of comfort, kit and general driving manners. The third row of seats is only suitable for little ‘uns, though, and off-road it’s a Discovery in name only.
Discovery Sport (2019-on) The second-generation Discovery Sport arrived only four years after the first. That’s because once again, it’s related to the Evoque, which was launched several years earlier and was therefore ready for a full new model in 2019.
£2450-£34,000 be maintenance costs – infamously, the timing belt is a body-off job, and rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too. Pros: All-round ability, stunning practicality, luxury and kit on high-speccers Cons: Cam belts, handbrakes air suspension… the list goes on
£13,000-£33,000 It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque – and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes. Pros: Seven-seat practicality. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models
£21,000-£52,000 The Disco Sport is a premium medium-sized SUV. It’s available with seven seats and, by the standards of the competition, models with four-wheel drive offer a decent level of off-road ability. It’s a massively popular choice
for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid early last year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of
excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing pre-
mium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models

Are Wolf LIVE, DREAM, DRIVE prices starting ZEUS BRAKE CONVERSIONS for Classic Land Rovers to soften?
OVER THE LAST YEAR or so, Wolf prices seem to have gone through the roof. The military version of the Defender is highly desirable – and that’s reflected in the sort of money people have been asking for them. So we’ve been surprised to see this 90 HardTop hanging around, even though its asking price of £15,500 looks a lot more attractive than what some dealers were wanting for similar vehicles earlier in the year. You do see rough ones up for sale at less money, but tidy examples were moving well at usefully more than twenty grand until very recently and even with a six-figure mileage under its belt this looks like a tidy one. It started life in 1999, serving with the Defence Support Group before moving on to the Tactical Supply Wing. It was posted to the mechanical transport section at RAF Boulmer in 2013, where it remained until being disposed of in 2019. As befits a Wolf, the 90 has a strengthened chassis, heavy-duty axles and roll cage – as well of course as a 300Tdi engine, which when combined with Army servicing means its 115,000 miles should be no cause all all for concern. It’s also had the REMUS upgrade, converting its rollover protection to a full cage, adding acoustic matting and protecting its chassis with a full dose of Dinitrol. In addition, during lockdown its owner gave it a thorough clean-down, treated it with Waxoyl and replaced and replaced parts including the rear shocks, swivels and wheel bearings. Despite all the protection, the chassis did need one new outrigger, and the footwell above it wanted a patch welded in. To make the vehicle even more appealing, it’s a Winterised one – complete with heated screen, a snow cowl, radiators under the rear seats and a Webasto engine heater. If that’s been used properly, the Tdi lump will have had a easy time of it. At the time of writing, the 90 had been for sale for more than a month. That outrigger definitely asks a question, but you’d expect to be taking this home for fifteen grand tops – which for any kind of Wolf short of a full-on wreck sounds like a price to pay attention to.
