Groups unite to repair lane Images: Supplied by GLASS ights of way users from the Green Lane Association and Trail Riders Fellowship have teamed up to fund repairs on a popular unsurfaced road in Monmouthshire. Chapel Hill Road, a classic green lane near Tintern in the Wye Valley, had become blocked by a landslip caused by water runoff, leading to the local authority imposing a temporary Traffic Regulation Order and seeking to pass the cost of repairs on to an adjacent landowner – until motor vehicle users, led by Kelvin Varney and local GLASS Rep John Askew, stepped in. An engineer from Monmouthshire County Council inspected the road on 31 December 2018 and reported that it needed to be closed to traffic ub se uently, a six week temporary TR came into force on 30 January. It was around this time that Kelvin became aware of the problem. A long standing member of the TRF, he had also joined GLASS towards the end of last year, and his efforts were to prove instrumental in getting the lane open again as quickly as possible. first became aware of the issue on anuary,’ says elvin From Facebook posts, it appeared the local GLASS Rep John Askew was already aware of the issue. It was also evident that John had good links with Monmouthshire County Council and had made contact with the engineer in charge and together had visited the site to establish what needed doing. eparately, Rod ones, a member of West Gloucestershire and Forest of Dean Motorcycle Club, and also a TRF member, had been chivvying the council to make progress. Rod, being this year’s lerk of the ourse for the yegate long distance trial, knew that the lane is a key feature of this classic event. At least one and sometimes three of the sections are marked out on the lane. This year, the trial was scheduled for the end of April. If I wanted to ride Limekiln in the Wyegate this year, I needed to do something to help get it open again!’ The plot thickened on 3 Febru ary when the local newspaper, the Monmouthshire Beacon, ran an article reporting that the owner of the land on the side where the landslip had occurred had been told by onmouth shire County Council that he would be held responsible for the cost of the repairs. Following this, the inevitable anti vehicle bile started coming out,

R

with a subsequent edition of the paper carrying letters from people complain ing about motorised use. Thanks to ohn’s efforts, the newspaper went on to publish a balanced response putting forward the vehicle user’s point of view. Rights of way are often at their most vulnerable when they fall out of repair, and the letters in the local paper were the background to a edgling move ment aiming to challenge the road’s status as a vehicular right of way. The longer it remained unusable, therefore, the greater the danger. Thus GLASS took up the cudgel, arranging for groundworks contractor AP Price to visit the site and quote for the repair work. The Association then contacted the TRF to discuss sharing the cost. Reading the conservation section of the TRF website led me to think that we could do this by raising funds via ust iving and the TRF’s matched funding scheme,’ says elvin set about compiling the Just Giving page and promoted it on the TRF Trail and local TRF group’s Facebook pages, as well as through est loucester shire and Forest of Dean Motorcycle Club, and was staggered to have the required £750 in just over 24 hours! submitted the application for matched funding to Dave Carling, TRF Conservation Director, and he replied that this was just the sort of initiative that the scheme was set up for. GLASS/Treadlightly footed half the contractor’s cost and the TRF members and West Gloucestershire and Forest of Dean MCC members the other half ’ In addition, Monmouthshire County Council agreed to provide the stone needed to grade the lane, which as well as being blocked was muddy in places. The contractor was offered volunteer help, although declined this as frequent machinery movements within the confines of a narrow working environment would create inevitable safety concerns. With all this in place, the work was scheduled to get underway at the start of March. The landowners on both sides of the lane trimmed their hedges unprompted a few days before, which helped with access – presumably at least one of them was absolute ly overjoyed at the way things had panned out, given that they had just been spared a bill for several thousand pounds – and the stone was dropped at the top end of the lane in perfect time for the work to begin.

nfortunately it wasn’t so much dropped as dumped, completely blocking the entrance to the lane, so the contractors’ first ob was to clear a path through the middle of it. Safe to say they had the right kit for this… They also had the right kit (a digger and dumper) to level the surface of the right of way, distribute the soil from the landslip and back fill the softer, more uneven parts with stone They also re moved the remains of the tree stumps that had slipped into the lane. The landowner, meanwhile, re cruited labour to trim the trees on the northern side of the lane in preparation for re fencing at a later date The bank along this side does remain sus ceptible to water erosion around the sunken section of the route; with the trees having been cut back at this time of year, it’s to be hoped that this will promote root growth and help to bind the bank soil. The work by the contractor took three days to complete and, on 9 March, just nine weeks after the original landslip, the council inspected the lane and removed both the TRO and the road closed signs. Late April saw the Wyegate Long Distance Trial visit for two sections – with Kelvin Varney among those competing. A fitting reward for the effort he put into getting Chapel Hill Road open again in such quick time – and for all those who, whether by making donations or simply through their GLASS and TRF membership fees, help keep ritain’s rights of way open for all to enjoy.

Can I have a word...

ach month I enjoy seeing the variety of Land Rovers coming together to create the issue. From the clunky and charming old Series and Rovers, right through to the fresh off the line helsea tractors They all have a place in The Landy. But one vehicle in particular stood out this month for being a bit of a character, or rather the fact it was owned by one Narveer Rai’s Range Rover P38 (page 18) used to belong to a certain Noel Edmonds and, to put in lightly, back in the Nineties, he was downright obsessed with Range Rovers. The one featured in this issue centres on Noel’s inputs under the umbrella of his old Unique Technic division of The ni ue roup won’t give the story away, but essentially whilst working alongside and Rover’s own pecial Vehicle branch, the two parties were able to put together the world’s most expensive Range Rover of the day. £450,000 That’s right t was supposed to be an Autobiography model, only taken to the nth degree and boast state of the art technology throughout the luxury SUV, in order to provide the occupant with connectivity to anywhere in the world. Laptops, phones, a fax machine – it’s all there in this cra y throwback to premillennial tech. Which is why P38 fan, Narveer, was so thrilled when the opportunity came up to be the owner of such a machine. The fact he won it in an auction on e ay is uite the coup, but if you’re going to own a Range Rover, you may as well make it the one that really is unique and has never been topped in terms of price tag. Exclusive or what.

Glamping

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott and Rovers are born with adventure at the very heart of their personality. But while they may be prepared for the most extreme conditions, as humans we can be a little fickle when it comes to the great outdoors. s currently look outside the win dow, can see a bright blue sky and the odd cloud oating around, indicating that it would be an excellent time to be camping in the likes of the ake District, Cornwall or the depths of Wales. Just imagine sitting outside your perfectly erected tent, the sun pouring down with enough warmth to make a t shirt the only re uirement, but not so hot you could end up looking like a breathing bucket of overcooked F t’s a vision that’s all very well and idyllic, but the reality is that more often than not you’ll actually look like a mad man who’s started a fight with a tent and is struggling to finish it – let alone win The rain will be bouncing off you like miniature bombs and your family will be trying not to look you directly in the eyes whilst they spectate with interest from the rear seats of the and Rover A caravan could be a better option, but then you’re either forced to pay site fees or tow the thing around with you, which adds hours to any journey and frustrates everyone else on the roads. It sounds hopeless. However, there is a solution.

Something Old, Something Hired

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Holden & Jones Photography, Joel Skingle Photography

When you hear the wedding bells ring, there’s only one vehicle you need to get you to the church on your big day

raditionally, on your wedding day you want a mode of transportation that carries elegance and sophistication, but also reliability o your first thought

T

may not be to seek the services of a Land Rover. The last thing you want on your big day is a blushing bride arriving on the back of an AA truck. But Yorkshire Vehicle Hire specialises in wedding day transportation and their entire eet is made up of Green Oval machines. The key word is indeed eet’, as it means at least when one of the Land Rovers goes AWOL, they always have a back-up plan ready. nd in reality there’s no cause for concern, because the brains behind Yorkshire Vehicle Hire are those of Tom and Sophie Waters, a couple who are well acquainted with the idiosyncrasies of Land Rovers and actually set up the business following their difficulties in finding the right vehicle for their own magical day. For our own wedding we want ed something a little different to the usual wedding car’ and as we looked around we realised it was very difficult to find a company which offered and Rovers for weddings,’ explains Tom e’ve had and Rovers in the family for as long as I can remember, ’ve grown up with and Rovers, they were the car of choice for my father and grandfather. Sharing their passion for Land Rovers and turning it into a business was a natural progression ’ Tom and Sophie run the business

together, with Tom covering the marketing and some of the driving, alongside his other role as a Transport Manager. Sophie then takes care of the admin side of the company whilst also looking after their little boy. ithin their special eet lies a Twist ed Defender 110, which not only gets plenty of coos from the congregation, but in typical Land Rover fashion can still turn workhorse and carry up to six passengers at once. The favourite is definitely our 50 80” Series I – it is the vehicle we used to drive across the North Yorkshire oors on our wedding day,’ relives Tom t’s better now than it was when

it was built and really is something special – a true ritish icon ’ Just like Tom and Sophie, more and more couples are looking for something different to the traditional wedding cars for their big day and what could be better suited to the Yorkshire countryside than a Land Rover. eing part of someone’s special day and seeing them happy inside one of our vehicles – it is great to see and the best part of what we do,’ states Tom And on the reliability front, do you think they’ve ever had any issues f course,’ laughs Tom, Everyone who owns a Land Rover will have a story about a reliability issue!

Above: Is there a better way to start married life than by driving off into the sunset at the wheel of a Land Rover? n one occasion, we were doing a wedding on a hot summer’s day, we took the bride and father to the church in the Series I, but as we went to start it again to put into place for when they came out the church, it wouldn’t start! t was never a real problem, as we had a Range Rover Sport on hand which took the newly married couple to their reception – which they were thrilled with That’s the beauty of our eet we always have a back up plan ’ The Series I eventually made it to the party and everyone could then get their photos with the car after it had thrown its minor wobble. The truth is that many vintage cars can have their moments, but at least with a Land Rover, whatever the conditions and whatever the terrain, you know you’ll reach your destination. And the same applies to Yorkshire Vehicle Hire. Come rain or shine, Series Land Rover or Defender, they will make sure the show goes on and you will have your perfect wedding. I

There have been plenty of limited edition Range Rovers over the years, but none are as Unique as the one we have here – and none have demanded such a price tag either…

Words and Pictures: Mike Trott wning something exclusive is part of what makes that object feel more special and in many ways better than comparable items. I remember once owning a limited edition Xbox controller. It was red and when I held it in my hands I felt that bit more invincible while playing FIFA. I had a deep conviction that it made me a better player, which lasted right up until the four-year-old on the other side of the world lobbed me from the halfway line. The controller was no more.

O

An Xbox controller is one thing, but when it comes to a limited edition Range Rover, we’re lucky enough to have been (ironically) spoilt for choice over the years. Think of the likes of the Holland & Holland models, the CSK, or the 1992 LSE Range Rovers and each has emerged with bespoke features or sometimes just minor details to set themselves apart from the regular mush. Each has been made in small numbers – that’s the point – but then surely the smaller the production quota, the better the machine?

Left: A laptop offers connections to the outside world – even when running Windows 95 Above Left: Processing power ’ B super computer was needed in the boot Above Right: T HS Right:

’ BE M

f that’s the case, then theoretically what we’re looking at here is the best Range Rover ever made. And this unique Range Rover was once owned by a household name of the Nineties – Mr Noel Edmonds. The Range Rover is now owned by Narveer Rai, a P38 fan who grew up dreaming of a Mk2 Range Rover. He now owns the most exclusive one around and can shed more detail on this unusual and exceedingly rare machine. Autobiography versions were available of the P38 from 1996 onwards,

designed and engineered to be the most luxurious derivatives on sale. However, one particular Autobiography car was pulled to one side by Land Rover and used in a joint project with Unique Technic as a prototype vehicle for new Autobiography features. The car was a test pilot and designed to be the cream of the crop with regards to technology and automotive luxury,’ says Nav The idea was that you could be anywhere in the world and you could communicate with anyone ’ ere’s some background information you may find interesting ni ue Technic was a division of the Unique Group, formed by Noel Edmonds himself in 1985, and specialised in broadcasting systems. The division worked with Land Rover’s pecial ehicles branch to cre ate a new breed of Autobiography P38, but with a price tag of £450,000, the project was deemed too expensive to be a realistic and marketable product. The car was owned by and Rover for the first 4 months of its life and then Noel Edmonds owned it after that,’ re veals Nav hether he bought it or was given it by Land Rover is unclear. He was in his peak at that time, though ’ hat started as an ordinary 4 litre 8 Range Rover uickly developed into a mobile office riginally the car was black, but was given the sky blue colourway and also police-spec fuel injectors and BECM (Body Electronic Control odule The ni ue’ P38 gained a laptop, printer, fax machine and became the first car to carry onboard nternet ep, it wasn’t always this way kids

t’s got an in car phone and voice recognition, a reversing camera and security system – so it will record any thieves attempting to steal the vehicle, telling them to step away,’ continues Nav nd to account for all the electrics, it has two extra batteries!’ Besides Nav appreciating the idea of Noel Edmonds receiving a text and video from the immobiliser system when someone is trying to steal his lavish Landy, Nav is also a straight up P38 fan. t was the P38 that started it for me that combination of ruggedness and luxury,’ explains Nav Everyone has their generation: some like two-door Range Rovers some would covet the CSK Range Rovers above all else. I like the P38, though, and it’s more authentic to the original than the diluted L322. y uncle had an utobiography in ’ 8, which was a ritish Racing reen colour, and then my dad had one when was aged three ’ Having always wanted a nice P38 to call his own, Nav struck lucky on eBay of all places when he stumbled across this P38 – and fortunately for his wallet, the auction closed at a fraction of the original £450K price tag. Some limited edition vehicles can be a bit lame. They can often just be a marketing ploy with no more than a different colour or wheel option dressed up as something much more. Though with Nav’s one off prototype Rangey, he not only has the exclusive P38 he’s been looking for, but also a vehicle with a fascinating backstory for good measure.

Land Rovers come in useful for all sorts of jobs. However, you might not have an old Series Land Rover down for being the perfect accomplice for when the use of stealth is paramount Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

Land Rover working for a living is nothing unusual, but sometimes you might be confused as to why they’ve been called upon for a particular role. t’s confusing when Donald Trump is elected President of the United States and confusing to learn that Kim Kardashian is studying to become a lawyer, and you may be even more surprised to learn that Justin Bieber not only has a knack for churning out hit singles, but also for solving the Rubik’s ube learly, people can end up in roles, or possess skills, you wouldn’t initially associate with them. And seeing as Land Rovers are some of the most colourful characters from the automotive world, it’s no revelation to discover that they often have more than one side to their personalities, too.

Split Personality Old Series Land Rovers tend to bumble along the road with all the finesse of a hammer They clunk about and bounce passengers around until you either sustain an almighty head injury or you earn a backside that feels like it’s more bruised than the reject fruit everyone is avoiding at the supermarket. Handling Difficulties

In this month’s edition of The Landy, we’re following Marrion 4x4 in the replacement of a D2 steering box, after a leak was detected by the team Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

ome jobs on Land Rovers can be incredibly infuriating, ultimately because it’s a ob on a Land Rover. However, there are some mechanical undertakings that won’t see you posting a classified for your andy within five minutes of starting the task. The Discovery 2: a likeable machine on the most part, but one that still car ries a fair few niggles that will occasion ally need sorting. In this instance, the steering box has suffered a leak and as is often the case, replacing the entire

S

unit is easier to do and better practice for maintaining a healthy Land Rover. The fresh unit being drafted in here is a reconditioned steering box, offering a more viable solution, but one that will work ust as smartly as a brand new version. So, on with the job itself. Replacing the steering box is the sort of thing you could do on your driveway, although having access to a garage can have its advantages and ease the process in areas f you’re looking for a garage to complete the work for you, always remember Marrion 4x4.

Be careful not to move the pipes too much as they frequently become brittle through corrosion. Simply make sure they are not in the way of removing the steering box

All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy Insure your Disco Sport with Adrian Flux from £340

Old Sport

W

ith the Discovery Sport due for its major facelift and scheduled to hit the roads later this year, it’s time to look at the early models as a potential solution to the daily driver in your life.

This seven-seat compact SUV is a valuable addition to any family, with a exible interior and decent running costs compared to the rest of the Green Oval range The early 2 2 D4 models use the old Freelander 2 engine, while the ngenium powerplants started to filter in

from ugust 20 5 and offer marginally better economy and refinement Prices are now down to around £ ,000 and most models carry reasonable e uipment levels, alongside the 5 2 seating ith the new car approaching, look to the old port

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oo es heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80 guise – is arguably the most sought after and Rover for purists and collectors alike

ts 40’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then if you can source all the bits you need and come up with a finished example, it could well fetch mega bucks

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) n 58, the second generation and Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts

The prices are on the increase, however, as these 0 year old vehicles start to come into their own as an investment and collector’s item 2 25 petrol 88 would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2 0 litre diesel, were underpowered and rather noisy.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the eries , the eries emerged in with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model. eadlights were shifted out to the wings in line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top

of the bulkhead – we’re not sure it’s the full five stars on the latest Euro N P scale, though The eries wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2 25 litre engines throughout its production, although in 80 the 2 25 motors switched to a

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the eries and Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the eries ightweights These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance

that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the T – built from 2 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings These eries ightweights throw up an extra dimension to and Rover own-

* Based on a 2015 2.2-litre SD4 covering 10,000 miles per annum, 45-year-old driver, with green lane, off-road cover, agreed value and £300 excess

£7000-£75000 Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets ut can you really put a price on such an icon?

£3500-£35000 The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra thin layer of refinement over the eries hile the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly e thorough in your checks, both under the hood, but also underneath the body.

£2500-£25000 more durable five bearing crank rather than the three bearing setup The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

£3500-£18000 ership, with military history and touches often machine gunning the vehicle t means you get a and Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here wnership of any Forward ontrol is not for the faint hearted and it takes real commitment to stick with one These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, uite frankly, a bit

of a nightmare! lubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world This is and Rover at its best a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you ust about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and ne Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition, because they’re starting to be a real

Defender Tdi (1990-1998) n 0, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. f you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine Replacing blown units with a Disco

200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got fter the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability. Properly maintained, they can last for decades ook around for one with

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, and Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 8 to 200 The engine is arguably and Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – ust make sure that any mods have been done

properly before you take the plunge and purchase. Remaps, E R valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples of what many have been subject to ots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequent-

days They were fitted with six speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the Defender a nice place to be ut they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there for obscene money f you like paying

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) e haven’t always held the Freelander in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. ith examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander represents a cheap gateway into andy ownership

There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles The 8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.

£8000-£35000 f you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 0 Forward ontrol ou’ll have a 8 engine harping away underneath you literally and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors urely that’s reason enough to buy one?

£5000-£13000 still terribly underwhelming – and off road capability that has still yet to be matched today. very early 2 25 petrol 0 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too ut perhaps try for a 2 5 N version with low miles and good history They’re robust and as simple as they come.

£4000-£22000 full service history and you could find yourself a keeper Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. f you can find one, you’ll have a workhorse set for life

£6000-£30000 ly been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. ith minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a D machine and you’ll be working on one of and Rover’s most notable masterpieces ar the Tdi, the Td5 is up there with the best

£10000-£80000 thousands of pounds for some bucket seats and additional leather, then go ahead. You will pay a premium for a Puma, especially since the end of production ut if you can grab a 2 2 TD i and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation e’re no financial advisors, though

£400-£5000 The is thirsty and the 2 0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the in ectors first uy a Freelander and you even get a andy that’s decent off road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes t ust might not have the credibility of other Green Ovals...

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true and Rovers ut while you should turn your nose up at the Freelander , the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think ecause of it being replaced by the

Discovery port, the F 2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2 2 litre four cylinder turbo diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there generally

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover lassic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 2 st entury f you’re running a 8, however, that may not be such a wise idea lassic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they

can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo diesel examples That said, if you own one and it’s in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors and even untidy examples are starting to demand reasonable values.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) any people believe the P38 Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely ustified ights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure the list can start to look like a cartoon bill till, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38 n fact, if you find one in good

working order, it’s still a sensational car to own, even today. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some diagnostic e uipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a saloon

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) ompared to the P38, the 322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four wheeled motoring The Td receives mixed reviews some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch

ommon sense would steer you towards a TD 8, either the 3 or 4 4, but these are the 322s holding out for strong money Notably, the petrol 8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. s with many 2 st entury and

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further than the current Range Rover The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s agship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although

owning one of these suggests that your cash ow isn’t particularly an issue This is the last word in elegance and ma estic motoring ll the engines supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the 405 hasn’t lost any of its off road pedigree even if taking one off road is like asking your

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013) uch of the first generation Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s Sport uses the same foundations as the 405 Nevertheless, and Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and at-

tempted to make a handler out of it To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off road like the best of them. f you’re going to buy one, then

£2500-£21000 Do be aware of the rear diff and aldex unit for costly outlays Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £ 0,000 you can now get a capable all rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

£5000-£60000 Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. hile an early 0s lassic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an e ually tidy investment

£1500-£11000 and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries o for a 4 E, it’s actually more economical than the 4 0 8 and you’ll get all the toys working or not r you could try and find a limited edition anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

£3000-£30000 Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic and any issues you’re like to encounter will re uire deep pockets Drivetrain faults are becoming more fre uent, so you need to look for that F s a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need

£4000-£30000 you need to love it for itself, because a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige Perhaps the only issue with the Sport – and it’s a big one – is that is shares all the problems the D3 experiences

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-present) The second generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, ust like the current daddy Range Rover, the 405 That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the D motor

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) nd so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of and Rover’s sub brands t’s a vehicle designed to fill the gap between the smaller Evo ue and larger Range Rover port t’s a competent cruiser and has received numerous

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Land Rover Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper class Range Rover nd the olihull outfit succeeded t carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement

and a driving experience more suitable to families, including seating for seven, but all without a steep Range Rover price tag lessed with the same wonderful Tdi engines, the Discovery saved and Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first generation Discovery, in 8 and Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5 The engine is arguably and Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2 TD engine although the thirsty 4 4 8

Discovery 5 (2017-present) aunched a couple of years ago, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the utilitarian and Rover into new territory. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, along with

Discovery Sport (2015-present) rought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery port was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the next generation ngenium Td4 engine and Rover is now churning out substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evo ue for pace as one of the fastest selling vehicles to carry a green oval

£38000-£85000 combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is and Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the elar in due course. Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks

Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality, comfort Cons: Has lost its sense of value, steps on the toes of the Rangey

Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel an - ug , D D eD Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel, Si4 2.0 4cyl petrol.

Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of top models

Make Defender driving more of a Pleasure... The Red Booster servo clutch kit makes your Defenders clutch much easier to press. This kit will make your driving a more pleasurable experience and reduce the effort you’d normally put in from driving your Defender. No more painful knees or feet when you are stuck in slow moving traffic! Designed, engineered and manufactured to the highest standards, Red Booster is a mechanism system that makes it possible for all Defenders to have a servo assisted clutch. Working in a similar way to the braking system with a servo assisted system, it is mounted between the pedal and master cylinder and uses a vacuum from the inlet manifold to reduce the amount of pressure needed on the pedal to operate the clutch. The left hand drive version - works similar to the right hand drive system. The location of the clutch pedal of a left hand drive Defender is on the far corner of the vehicle and with hardly any space the entire unit had to be redesigned to fit without cutting and drilling your vehicle.
