For some, the joy of restoration is an obsession and without it there is a sense of emptiness. Stuart Keeves has experienced this. But when he set his sights on refurbishing this Series II, he pushed himself to put together a vehicle that would trump all those gone before.

Charity Land Rover Run Reaches 10th Anniversary Words: George Dove Picture: John Stokes
L
and Rovers bring the best out of people. One fine example of this is the annual Charity Land Rover Run – a convoyed trek for classic Landies all in the name of charity. This year, celebrating its 10th anniversary, the convoy will head to Le Touquet and consists of 31 vehicles. Along their travels, the Run will be raising money for their chosen charity, which this year is Cancer Research UK. Over the previous nine outings, the Land Rover motorcade has managed to raise £52,000 for various charities. The run has gathered money in support of many charities in the past, including the Make a Wish foundation,
the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, Children in Need and the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust. It isn’t always France that they head to, either, having also ventured to Belgium, and the fact that it is fully booked once again is testament to both the organisation of the trip and the commitment of Land Rover owners everywhere to helping others. Sponsored by Identity E2E, the event has its own designated Just Giving page, which can be found by searching ‘10th Anniversary Charity Land Rover’.

LRLRC to Host Off-Road Oasis Words: George Dove Picture: Tony Birch Photography
T
he Leicestershire and Rutland Land Rover Club are laying on a weekend of off-road activities that ticks all the boxes for down and dirty Green Oval enthusiasts. On the 22 and 23 June, there will be two off-roading day events for Land Rover enthusiasts at Stainby Quarry, starting with a time trial on the Saturday and an off-road promotional day on the Sunday. The time trial is specifically for specialist cross-country vehicles within the scope of the Association of Land Rover Clubs Ltd. Spectators will be accommodated in designated viewing areas, from which they can safely watch the action unfold free of charge. Competitors who want to take part will have to enter beforehand, with the £20 fee for each vehicle being paid in advance. On the Sunday, the off-road promotional day will not just be aimed at
lovers of the Land Rover marque, but to off-road enthusiasts besotted with vehicles wearing all badges. There will be a pre-set course around Stainby Quarry, with deviations from the set route for more experienced drivers. Passengers are welcome to go along for the ride and don’t inflate the £15 participation fee per vehicle. Every participant must sign in before beginning driving, as to be covered by the event permit. Following this, participants will be taken through the rules of play before a member of the Leicestershire and Rutland Land Rover Club rides around the circuit at least once, to verify the driver’s ability to control their vehicle and their knowledge of the course. After this, drivers will be free to go around the course as many times as they please. As with any good off-road event, there will be a burger van on site, plus the requisite toilet facilities. The club will be camping on site on both Friday and Saturday night, for which there will
be a £10 charge per unit for the whole weekend. Anyone wishing to camp that isn’t a member of the Leicestershire and Rutland Land Rover Club will be issued a social membership to comply with the caravan permit, which will be a £10 charge.
For any avid off-roaders who want to secure their place for the action-packed weekend, the place to do this is www. lrlrc.co.uk or get in touch with the club by emailing andy.d.lester@gmail.com. Either way, you’ll be buying a ticket to a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.
Evoque gets five-star crash rating
Having gone through the Euro NCAP crash test, the new Range Rover Evoque has emerged with a five-star rating. Its scorecard read 94% for adult and 87% for child occupant protection. These scores were complimented by emergency braking, lane keep assist, front and rear parking aids and a rear camera – all as standard.

Can I have a word...
P
hotos on social media have emerged this month showing the underside of what appears to be a new Defender mule testing over in the USA – but specifically in Moab, right on the doorstep of the Jeep Wrangler’s stomping ground. Clearly, Land Rover is making a statement with its upcoming Defender, laying down the gauntlet and telling Jeep it will try and beat the Wrangler not only around the world, but also on its home turf. What’s interesting about the frenzy that has been going around on social media, though, is that the images focus on the fully independent suspension setup that is visible underneath. Actually, it’s not so much the images as the comments surrounding the photos. People seem to be surprised by the fact the new Defender is more than likely to feature a fully independent set-up, but also utilise air suspension in the process. Manufacturers don’t have the luxury of developing one platform to solely be used on one vehicle anymore. They have to share components and parts, more so than ever. Which is why when you look at what else Land Rover make, vehicles like the Range Rover, Discovery and Velar are all using that style of set-up. So what else would the new Defender use? Whether that configuration can actually beat the Wrangler, or even the old Defender, when the new one arrives still remains to be seen. But for now, I believe we need to accept that the new Defender will feel very similar to the products already being produced at Solihull. How could they feel like anything else? The very latest gear you need for your Land Rover
Lumen Heck, That’s Bright Land Rovers go hand in hand with adventures. They will march on through or over anything, whether that be day or night. However, in the last of those scenarios, you may need to call on some form of backup. As you’re traversing treacherous territory in the dark of night, you’ll find few things as useful as the Lightforce HTX. The hybrid lighting solution comprises of a 70W HID bulb within a 170mm reflector, along with 20 genuine Lumileds LEDs providing a flood beam pattern. Pairing the LED and HID light sources means that the HTX poses the instant flood given by light emitting diodes and the unrivalled range of the high intensity discharge lamp. With them both singing from the same hymn sheet, the HTX kicks out 1 lux at a distance of 1768m. It’s tough, too, with a nylon composite housing filled with lightweight glass and the aluminium is 6063 extruded to maximise heat dissipation. It comes with a high-current waterproof connector and a waterproof
membrane with a mechanical seal, so just like your Land Rover, the HTX (aka Hybrid Technology Xtreme) is made for

He’ll say that he spilled his coffee, to which you point out he didn’t bring a coffee. He’ll continue, exclaiming that he doesn’t know how it got there or what it is. You stare back, staring the shrivelled character in the eyes. He doesn’t know what to say, but one thing is for sure. You’ll be replacing the base of that seat. As always, Britpart are on hand to assist, with their deluxe County Grey central seat base, tailored for Series models. Problem solved. There are, very broadly speaking, two types of Land Rover owners. Some will sit and polish their vehicles for hours on end, keeping them pristine, enough so that they can see their reflection in the bodywork. And there’s those who don’t. If you fall into the former camp, then the news of Autoglym’s Polar Series will be music to your ears – and may convert those in the latter. The range covers your vehicle from the stage of pre-wash all the way through to postwash protection. Initially, the pH neutral Polar Blast is applied via pressure washer and easily covers the vehicle. It then rests for a convenient period of up to ten minutes, leaving you just enough time to make a brew. Whilst you’re waiting on the kettle, the foam draws the bigger particles of muck from the surface of your Landy, and is then simply washed off. Then the new Polar Wash gets to work, again applied via pressure washer. Sadly, though, to get the most from it you need to don the mitt and massage it into the metalwork. It’s worth it though, as this process is what gives your pride and joy its glossy finish. Spray this off, again with the help of the pressure washer and watch the water roll off the corners of the bonnet bead by bead (this is optional and may slow the process). Finally, the also new Polar Seal protects the, albeit easy, work you’ve done so far. Helping justify the pressure washer purchase again, use it to apply the Seal, avoiding only the windscreen, rinse off once more with the trusty water sabre and there you have it – a proudly pristine vehicle that will repel both water and dirt for a long time. And the process was quick and easy, plus you got a cuppa out of it. www.autoglym.com

Completing a restoration can give you a sense of achievement, but also leave you at a loose end. When Stuart Keeves finished his first rebuild, he quickly wanted to come back for more – and set his goals at the highest possible level…

hen some people conclude a restoration, there is often immense relief – especially on the wife’s part – when you finally apply the finishing touches to the project you’ve been working on for months, or maybe even years. Reflecting on all the hospital visits to reattach fingers and the constant profanity that has seen your neighbours leave their homes in search of a life away from blue clouds, it’s difficult to see why you’d want to undertake such a hardship once more. But then you get twitchy, unable to deal with the withdrawal symptoms, and then suddenly an idea pops into your head, you explain it to your wife, she throws her hands up in despair and files for divorce but before you know it, you’re back on the straight and narrow, covered in oil and up to your neck in Land Rover parts, wondering how they all once made a complete vehicle. This isn’t quite the narrative Stuart Keeves can relate to, but he did find himself struggling to fill the void after the completion of his TR6. ‘I had the TR6, finished off that and was wondering what I could work on next,’ recalls Stuart. ‘I was on eBay one night (always dangerous) and saw a Land Rover with a new chassis up for
sale, so thought I’d put a £500 bid down just for the crack.’ Much to Stuart’s surprise, he won the auction. This was December 2013 and Stuart’s conquest continued to sit on his driveway for another 18 months. Cue the disgruntled ‘better half’. Given the meagre expense, Stuart hadn’t planned for the Landy to be anything more than spares. However, after some consideration, he decided to put this 1960 Series II back on the road. Things didn’t start well, with the chassis turning out to be rotten and having endured some ‘interesting repairs’. ‘I decided to order a new galvanised replica Richards chassis, but also a Pegasus bulkhead – the reason being
that these bulkheads are bespoke to the model and year,’ explains Stuart. ‘These are both significant outlays, so to do the rebuild justice, I needed to do the best job I could.’ Understandably, the restoration turned out to be a more extensive process than originally thought. For example, Stuart wasn’t content in just replacing the tired 151 engine with a generic donor, which meant he would have to travel long and far to find components like the big end and mains in order for the motor to be rebuilt. The attention to detail didn’t stop with the engine, either. Stuart adds, ‘I’ve gone to great lengths to get age-related parts. Like

it now has the right age glass for the doors etc. It’s not original, but everything is original spec, right down to the threads and nuts, for example.’ At the end of a four-year restoration that has seen the kitchen dishwasher being used to wash Land Rover parts, Stuart (and hopefully his wife, too) is now revelling in the results. ‘I’m quite pleased with it,’ beams Stuart. ‘That is my usual statement I give people! I get a buzz from people coming up and saying, “You’ve done a bloody good job.” That never used to be me; I never did the shows or anything. But now I like taking it around the show scene, there’s that feeling of pride and achievement.’ In testing himself to see just how good a restoration he could do, Stuart has found the experience to be one fantastic ride. There were challenging times, of course, but throughout there has been a real enjoyment in putting together a pristine 1960 Land Rover. ‘I enjoy the mechanical side of things more than doing the bodywork and particularly enjoyed when I first started it up after the rebuild – when you get that new smell,’ says Stuart. ‘You take a step back and think, “I did that.”’ And now, having seen Stuart’s handiwork first-hand, I can safely say he has succeeded in what he set out to do. The Series II looks like it could have rolled out of a showroom yesterday, while the hard work put in also means Stuart has put together a Land Rover that will be mechanically sound for decades. This rebuild isn’t just Stuart’s personal best – it’s also one of the best you’re ever likely to see.

Coming of Age
Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Land Rover

hen the Range Rover Evoque emerged in 2011, few could have foreseen how influential this compact SUV would be – including Jaguar Land Rover itself. The Evoque became the fastest-selling Land Rover of all time – a level of success which JLR will no doubt be hoping to replicate with this new one. So what exactly is new? Well, the Mk2 Evoque uses Land Rover’s new PTA platform (it stands for Premium Transverse Architecture, though no doubt plenty of owners will be on a Parent Teacher Association too), the reason being that it was designed with electrification in mind. All but the entry-level front-wheel drive 148bhp diesel model will be mild hybrids, using 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines along with a 48-volt electric motor to aid acceleration and reduce emissions.
The front-wheel drive diesel comes with a manual gearbox, whereas all other versions have a nine-speed ZF auto driving all four wheels. There’s a range of three diesel and three petrol versions: D150, D180 and D240, and P200, P250 and P300, all of them named for their power output. A plug-in hybrid will also be available later this year. On the outside, the Evoque’s exterior mimics the larger Range Rover Velar. In fact, whereas the old model had more of a Freelander-come-over-all-tarty vibe, if you think of this one as a more compact, scaled-down Velar, you’ve got the gist of it. To my eye, the design suits the Evoque’s proportions even better, too. The body itself is 13% stiffer than before and, even with the introduction of hybrid technology, has only grown 1mm in length. There’s been some clever packaging work going on at Land Rover, as the wheelbase has grown by
21mm, yielding 20mm more legroom in the back and a 10% improvement in luggage capacity. It all sounds like intelligent progress and that’s because this is a worthy evolution of the old car rather than a wholesale revolution. Open up the Evoque, using the Velar-inspired retractable door handles, and you’ll step inside a spacious cabin that has a premium feel and finish. There’s the usual abundance of leather around the interior, but this can now be substituted for sustainable textiles, including suedecloth, wool blends and even eucalyptus. The latest infotainment from JLR has been installed, with the Touch Pro Duo set-up donning neat graphics. it’s not the fastest system on the market, but no options are more than a couple of touches away. The steering wheel controls have a satisfying operation and the seats can be adjusted electrically in up to 16 different ways. There’s no doubt the interior is a step up over the outgoing model. Once on the move, too, an improvement in refinement is clear to behold, with minimal interruptions from wind and tyre noise. The highest compliment that I can award the new Evoque is that it now feels like a proper Range Rover. The refinement doesn’t just stop with the cabin environment, either. The Evoque’s ride is well damped and in corners there’s only a hint of body roll. We tried the P200 version finished in SE trim: it’s the entry-level petrol model and is likely to be one of the top-selling versions. While the engine was quiet and worked well in the background with the auto box, however, it never felt as quick as its on-paper stats would have you believe. I was disappointed with

The Mk1 Evoque was a huge success, lifting the Green Oval to new heights and bringing the Range Rover name to the masses. So, small shoes for the new Evoque to slide into then?
Above: First seen in the Velar, the Evoque gains the Touch Pro Duo system, while cabins can now be specified with sustainable materials its economy, too, especially as this is meant to be the most frugal petrol unit in the range, blending a state-of-theart Ingenium engine with JLR’s latest hybrid technology. A return of 27mpg is just not acceptable in something that is supposed to be a usable compact SUV. My advice would therefore be to stick with either the D180 or D240 models, which will certainly return better fuel economy while also delivering some additional low-range shove. If you do, you’ll be getting a fantastic car. The Evoque is a wonderfully comfortable vessel, reminding me of how easily the Discovery 5 covers ground. It always remains composed, no matter what stretch of road lies ahead – and it manages to retain its heritage when you leave the tarmac, too. With a revised version of Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 technology, indeed, the baby Range Rover is
incredibly capable off-road. Traction is never in doubt as the four-wheel drive system just works out what to do and pulls the car forward. And even if things get tricky, there are plenty of features to help the Evoque out. Hill Descent Control gives confidence on steep slopes, while All Terrain Progress Control acts as a form of cruise control for rough ground. There’s a maximum wading depth of 600mm, too, while new gizmos such as Ground View technology make their first appearance on the Evoque. The latter uses cameras to project the illusion of an invisible bonnet on the touchscreen, so drivers can see clearly what lies next to their front wheels and in front of the bulkhead. Other neat new touches include the ClearSight rear-view mirror. This can be activated by toggling the traditional rear-view mirror into a HD video screen featuring a wide-angle picture from a

Above: The Evoque’s Ground View technology brings clarity to off-road situations camera on the rear of the car, meaning you can always have good visibility even if you’re carrying large items or have a tall passenger in the middle rear seat. The ClearSight mirror is a £315 option on our SE-spec test car, which brings us nicely on to kit levels. Prices for the new Evoque start from £31,600 and even the basic S models come with LED headlights, heated windscreen, rear Isofix mountings, front and rear parking sensors, a rear camera, DAB radio, Bluetooth, cruise control and Lane Keep Assist. SE versions have a powered tailgate, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added into the mix, alongside 20” alloys, the Touch Pro Duo upgrade from the entry-level 10” screen and a wealth of safety features such as Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Traffic Monitor and a 360-degree parking aid. Finally, HSE models gain keyless entry, Windsor leather, an interactive display and Connect Pro, turning your Evoque into a Wi-Fi hotspot – and a saint for keeping children amused. An R-Dynamic option is available across all versions for an additional £1,500, which essentially adds more stylish elements to the Evoque’s already handsome exterior. Whatever version you pick, there’s no reason to go beyond a list price of £45,000. The Evoque has just been awarded the full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP and residuals are expected to lead the class. Now, at last, it feels like its bigger siblings, carrying over the Velar’s stunning looks and interior while maintaining the impressive on and off-road manners its heritage demands. The baby Range Rover is a baby no more. Below: It may now have hybrid technology, but the Evoque has lost none of its off-road pedigree, now boasting the latest Terrain Response 2 algorithms

Earning your Keep A Wolf is a rare Landy and something that could easily be stored as an exhibit in a museum. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find some still being used as a proper Green Oval
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
W
ith more and more vintage Land Rovers being restored and kept as potential investments, you can understand why some of these relics are stored in garages and only being brought out for the odd sunny Sunday. However, you can still find some rare metal being used as the versatile vehicles they were designed to be. A Wolf 90, for example, is one of the more exclusive military vehicles to be produced in Solihull, manufactured for a short spell at the end of the Nineties. These were ideal candidates for the military, as they were tough vehicles that were bolstered further by heavy-duty components over the regular military Defenders. And with a 300Tdi engine rumbling away under the bonnet, rather than a breathless 2.5 NA diesel, it’s easy to see why these Land Rovers are sought after and retain respectable values. Peter Wales was in the market for a usable vehicle a couple of years ago, and that’s exactly what he found down at the Peterborough show. ‘Witham Specialist Vehicles, who specialise in the ex-MOD machines, were exhibiting down there and had a
couple of Wolf Land Rovers available,’ says Peter. ‘The 90s were made in less numbers than the 110s, which makes it a little more exclusive.’ Because of their larger frame, the 110 models lent themselves to more applications, such as the WMIK versions, so more were produced as a result. But for collector, Peter, he saw the merits of having a Wolf 90 as a valuable addition to his fleet, as well as being a dependable workhorse. ‘The attraction was the 300Tdi, meaning you can get 30 to the gallon in it and comfortably run at 60-70mph on the motorway,’ explains Peter. That’s not something you could do in most classic Land Rovers. ‘It’s used as a daily and helps with carting stuff about and any towing I need to do. I’ve used it a couple of times over on the continent.’ The Wolf that now resides with Peter was based out in Iraq after it went into service in 1996. It then came back in 2002 and lived over at the MOD base in Salisbury until 2007. Peter is the second civilian owner after its previous keeper just wasn’t using it. ‘It ticked all those practical boxes and I like the look of it, with the tyre on the side, the pickaxe and the camo
netting on the bonnet,’ continues Peter. But rather than being his main passion, the Wolf is just an extra string to Peter’s fanatical Land Rover bow. We’ve featured Peter’s two-door Range Rover previously, but also his Minerva, a Series I dressed up for Belgian service. The beauty of the Wolf is Peter can drive it to a show, all whilst towing one of his other classics on the back, killing two birds with one stone. ‘I have a Willys Jeep and the Minerva, so the Wolf is another military vehicle to add to the collection. I took the Wolf to War and Peace, and when people see the tyre on the side they start asking what it is - it gets a fair bit of attention itself. ‘I’ll continue to take it around the shows and I’d like to get the Wolf, Jeep and Minerva together at a show at some point – that would be nice.’ When the Wolf isn’t wowing crowds, though, the Wolf is earning its keep as a dependable workhorse Peter can rely on for all the eventualities he might face on a day-to-day basis. Whether it’s getting Peter about in the winter months or aiding him in towing another Land Rover to join the collection, this Wolf won’t be retiring from service any time soon.

later in this article. Barrie and Active 4x4 Adventures will be appearing a lot more in The Landy as part of being our adventure correspondents. The destinations covered by the company range far and wide, with an environment and vista to suit all different tastes. However, this month we will be looking at what makes the Alps so special –
especially whilst being guided by Barrie and the team. The Alps is a vast landscape, but the Active 4x4 Adventures trek is based on an anti-clockwise circuit of the French and Italian sides, venturing between the magnificent Val-d’Isère in the north and Nice in the south. Along the way, expect to experience wild camping, a
mixture of adventure activities and access to three national parks, including the Vanoise, Ècrins and Mercantour. However, this 10-day tour all starts at a charming campsite situated along the banks of the River Arc in Lanslebourg, complete with a barbecue and introduction of what will be witnessed in the days ahead.

Above: You won’t be short on spectacular views from the driver’s seat On the first official day of the tour, following a nutritional breakfast of cereals, granolas, wholegrain flapjacks and the necessary tea or coffee, you’re only minutes from your first ascent leading up through pine forests and onto the first of many mountain passes. Bewildering views wait in store above the turquoise Lac du Mont-Cenis, where gravel tracks will then whisk you away to an ancient Roman road so you can follow in the footsteps of the legendary Hannibal – Barca, not Lecter – who it is believed crossed the Alps with African elephants in order to declare war on Italy over 2000 years ago. Lunch ensues in the shade of chestnut trees, with fresh baguettes, salad and a selection of cold meats ready to be savoured. And what could be better after lunch than heading out across one of Europe’s most majestic off-road routes, the Colle delle Finistre. More spectacular trails follow, including the Strada dell’Assietta that provides the location for the first wild camp of the tour. And dinner? Well, you’ll be treated to a hearty beef and vegetable stew to help keep you warm as the temperatures cool into the evening. Not bad for the first day of adventure! The ski resort of Sestriere and beautiful Lago Nero await your arrival on day two, before things get more technical on the trails in the afternoon and there’s an opportunity to see what your Land Rover can do in its lowrange setting. In the evening, there’s a campsite on the River Durance calling your name and a charcoal braai will see to it that you get your fix of ribs, steak and other grilled delights. Of course, being an active 4x4 adventure, there are other activities throughout the trek for you to participate in. There’s a spot of river rafting on day three that features roasted marshmal-

Above: Throughout the trek, you will be exposed to some of the finest meats you can experience on a braai Right: From off-roading in your Land Rover to heading downhill on offroad scooters, it’s all here scape of immense beauty, but when they just keep getting better, it’s hard to stop your jaw from anchoring time and time again. On day four, that jaw will surely drop for the impressive glacial valley spread out before you, as you stand thousands of metres above on a rocky precipice, admiring the natural world in all its splendour. There are more tracks to be travelled in the afternoon prior to reaching a special campsite run by a very friendly elderly couple, who really go out of their way to make you feel right at home. The next day you’ll make progress through the Alps towards Lac de Serre-Ponçon, a reservoir with infinite pebble beaches and water warm enough for an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming. Relaxation is key here, because on the morning of day six you’re likely to experience a rise in your heart rate. Meandering up the extreme 14km track towards the Tunnel du Parpaillon, there is a surprise in store as you reach the tunnel, for the descent will be undertaken at the seat of specially designed, large-wheeled, oversized, all-terrain downhill scooters. You’re free to head back down the trail at whatever pace you prefer, but after lunch you’ll be driving back up
and over the other side, down on the equally exciting track towards the second night of wild camping. The vistas come thick and fast on day seven, and while the trails won’t give you cause for any damage on your Land Rover, there is enough to keep you preoccupied behind the wheel. Running adjacent to the Ubaye, through the Mercantour National Park to the Lac des Sagnes, a lunchtime pause and some hiking with scenic waterfall views is the ideal respite. Moving onto an evening in Jausiers, there will be ample opportunity to enjoy the local beverages for those who are thirsty. From Jausiers, the Col de la Bonette leads you away on day eight, which is renowned for being the highest surfaced road in Europe. Extending above 2,700 metres, the altitude will leave your Land Rover a little breathless, while the views will do the same job to you. The River Tinée is your guide en route to St Etienne where you stop for lunch, prior to further waterfall exposures and a drive to Val Cavera for the final night of camping out in the wild. Old military forts look over proceedings while those still
hungry for adventure can take a hike up the mountain ridge nearby. San Damiano Macra is the next waypoint after heading through Zona di Pascolo, and it presents the chance to restock on fuel and supplies ready for another bout of off-road action. The final day serves up a real treat, with views of Mont Blanc rewarding a technical drive, but also the bilberry bushes situated along the route. Once at the campsite, preparations get underway for the trip home, although there’s still time for one more farewell braai. If the mountains are where you and your Land Rover feel most at home, then it’s difficult to ignore the lure of the Alps. It goes without saying that the scenery up at such elevations have to be seen to be believed, while the extraordinary range of mountain passes will live with you and your Land Rover long after you’ve come back down to earth. For an overland trip that will keep you actively on your toes and provide you with a true exploration into the Alps, Active 4x4 Adventures will make sure you’re suitably catered for. www.active4x4adventures.com

f you’ve never come across a leaking Land Rover, then you’ve never come across a Land Rover. They are notorious for leaving their mark, but often its in more ways than one. Of course, while we can all find it slightly endearing for a Land Rover to spill its heart out all over your driveway, it’s normally worthwhile trying to actually get to the bottom of the issue and work out why the thing is leaking in the first place. There can obviously be a whole list of potential problem areas, but the one we’re looking at this month with

The Landy Buyer
All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy
Riches for Rags
T
he Land Rover market is an ever-changing one and while prices of vintage Landies continue to rise, the new breed start to represent better and better value by the day. Or do they? The problem is that while many of
them are now affordable in terms of purchase price, some of the electronic issues and mechanical faults can mean you need to set the same funds aside again just to cover any hiccups. But, an early Range Rover Sport can now be picked up for less than £5,000.
A D3-based platform and therefore capable machine lie underneath, plus it’s not like the Sport is a shed to drive. Sat-nav and heated seats aren’t the sort of thing you’ll find on your Series III. And considering the low cost, you could feasibly keep a rainy day fund to one side.
Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike.
Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then if you can source all the bits you need and come up with a finished example, it could well fetch mega bucks.
Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts.
The prices are on the increase, however, as these 60-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as an investment and collector’s item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and rather noisy.
Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top
of the bulkhead – we’re not sure it’s the full five stars on the latest Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a
Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance
Insure your Range Rover Sport with Adrian Flux from £330
that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover own-
* Based on a 2007 2.7 TDV6 HSE covering 10,000 miles per annum, 45-year-old office professional, green lane, off-road cover and £250 excess.
£7000-£75000 Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?
£3500-£35000 The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the hood, but also underneath the body.
£2500-£25000 more durable five-bearing crank rather than the three-bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.
£3500-£25000 ership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of.
Versions: 80” (‘48-’53), 86” (‘54-’56), 107” Pick Up (‘54-’56), 107” SW (‘54’58). 88”, 109” Pick Up (‘56-’58). 1.6 4cyl petrol (‘48-‘52), 2.0 4cyl petrol (‘52- ‘58).
Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80”s Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘58-’71), 2.0 4cyl diesel (‘58-’61), 2.25 4cyl diesel (‘61-’71), 2.6 6cyl petrol (‘67-’71 (109” only). Pros: As a resto it’s a sound investment, some examples now MOT exempt, more desireable than SIII Cons: Bulkheads can rot with ease, check suspension leaves for seizing
Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol, 2.25 4cyl diesel. 2.6 6cyl petrol produced until 1980. Stage One V8 used detuned version of the 3.5 V8 (‘79-‘85). Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership, still has the Series pedigree, parts still widely available Cons: Not as desireable as earlier Series models Versions: 88”. IIA (‘68-’72), III (‘72-’84). 2.25 4cyl petrol engine.
Pros: Not like all other Series Land Rovers out there, military background, uses lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Styling isn’t to everyone’s taste, can be pricey owing to their exclusivity over regular models

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted and it takes real commitment to stick with one. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit
of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun.
Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition, because they’re starting to be a real
collector’s item. However, you’ll likely be searching far and wide for that pristine example. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were
Defender Tdi (1990-1998) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine. Replacing blown units with a Disco
200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got. After the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability. Properly maintained, they can last for decades. Look around for one with
Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done
properly before you take the plunge and purchase. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few examples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequent-
Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its
days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there for obscene money. If you like paying
Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership.
There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust.
£8000-£35000 If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101 Forward Control. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?
£5000-£13000 still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 NA version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.
£4000-£22000 full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after. If you can find one, you’ll have a workhorse set for life.
£6000-£30000 ly been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces. Bar the Tdi, the Td5 is up there with the best.
£10000-£80000 thousands of pounds for some bucket seats and additional leather, then go ahead. You will pay a premium for a Puma, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...
£400-£5000 The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy a Freelander 1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes. It just might not have the credibility of other Green Ovals...

Pros: Good ones are now worth saving, same ability as Tdi Defenders Cons: Not many left in good condition, engines underpowered Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (1990- 1998). 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘90-’94). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98). Pros: Excellent off-road, arguably the very best engines, old-school electrics Cons: Units are getting rare, many have been used hard; Tdi it might be, but that doesn’t mean rustproof Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (1998-2007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (2007-2016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).
Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same offroad prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05).
Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the Freelander 1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the
Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there... generally.
Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they
can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s in good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors and even untidy examples are starting to demand reasonable values.
Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good
working order, it’s still a sensational car to own, even today. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon
Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch.
Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land
Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further than the current Range Rover. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although
owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your
RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013) Much of the first-generation Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s Sport uses the same foundations as the L405. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and at-
tempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle. It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then
£2500-£21000 Do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.
£5000-£60000 Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.
£1500-£11000 and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find a limited edition anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...
£3000-£30000 Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic and any issues you’re like to encounter will require deep pockets. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.
£27000-£200000 alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with either a link to the royal family or the drugs trade. If you fit into some of these categories, then we envy you.
£4000-£30000 you need to love it for itself, because a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. Perhaps the only issue with the Sport – and it’s a big one – is that is shares all the problems the D3 experiences.
Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.
Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).

Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07-’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper RR

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor.
Some won’t like the lurid posture, while others will love it. But no one can knock the Sport for its performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane.
RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-2019) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses. And given that the Evoque was, and still is, their fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner.
They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham had something to do with it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender. It’s actually still capable off-tarmac, but would rather not go there. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because
RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-present) A new Evoque has hit the roads, but you’d do well to tell the difference between it and the old one. Most Range Rovers look the same at the front now, but the new Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar.
It’s not just the exterior that mimics the larger Velar, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The majority of the range is made up of mild hybrids, with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor.
£25000-£155000 The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing organs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years for depreciation to do its thing. Its recent update has seen the Velar cabin tech filter through to the Sport.
£10000-£47000 there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. The Convertible was launched in 2016, and there are three and five-door versions. We say stick to the latter, and avoid the 2WD model. What’s a Range Rover without four-wheel-drive?
£31600-£55000 Only the base front-wheel drive D150 Evoque escapes the electrification. Our first drive review of the new Evoque appears in this issue of The Landy, so head to page 16 to find out whether the new baby Range Rover is any good...

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands. It’s a vehicle designed to fill the gap between the smaller Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport. It’s a competent cruiser and has received numerous
accolades because of its particularly handsome exterior. The Velar is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace, but has greater off-road ability than the aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which
Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Land Rover Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. And the Solihull outfit succeeded. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement
and a driving experience more suitable to families, including seating for seven, but all without a steep Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable
Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it
does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly before purchasing. You can also buy a V8, but the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body,
Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8
petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the
Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched a couple of years ago, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the utilitarian Land Rover into new territory. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, along with
introducing new engines, they’ve taken one huge step towards doing so. Having driven the latest Discovery, we can confirm that it has lost none of its versatility and is comfortably the most capable Land Rover currently on sale today. All of the engines have great flex-
Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a
Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the next-generation Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval.
£38000-£85000 combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...
£700-£10000 all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.
£1500-£8000 especially towards the back end. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have been dipped into the sea. However, not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks, too.
£3500-£40000 timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! Rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too. The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.
£34000-£80000 ibility and, along with its increasingly upmarket – and Range Rover-esque – interior, the new Disco 5 is one of the best machines to cover long distances in, whether that’s on the road or not. Like most new Land Rovers, it’s easy to overspend on the options, but a well-specced Sd4 is all you really need.
£16000-£50000 It’s a more usable vehicle than the Range Rover Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the baby Range Rover. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech model and you could find yourself with a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality, comfort Cons: Has lost its sense of value, steps on the toes of the Rangey Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 / SD4 / eD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel, Si4 2.0 4cyl petrol.

Extend the life of both engine and transmission... Lubetrend Analysis is the complete fluid analysis programme performed by the number one oil condition monitoring laboratory in the UK with over 35 years of experience in monitoring all types of fluid lubricated and insulating oil systems; giving you the confidence to act. Regular checks on the condition of the oil can extend the life of both engine and transmission and help spot potential problems long before they materialise. Our aim is to help you succeed in making the most of your vehicles and machinery through reducing unplanned downtime, extending oil drains and detecting potential future failure - before they happen. Essential not only for all aspects of motorsport - we’d recommend taking a sample after each event - but also recommended for your everyday transport as part of the annual service. The price includes the sample kit and the full analysis report. Only the postage to the laboratory is your responsibility.
