Twisted Automotive expands operations in North America with opening of New Jersey facility

IT’S STILL LESS THAN TWO YEARS since of the launch of Twisted USA, the North American arm of well known Defender tuner Twisted Automotive. But the company continues to expand – to the extent that it has just opened a 100,000 square foot workshop in New Jersey, giving it three separate US sites. The new operation, which supplements existing premises in Texas, is a step on the road to Twisted USA’s goal of being able to deliver four vehicles a month by the end of this year. These will be made up of the NA-V8, its top-selling product, and the electric Defender EV which is built using all-new components. The company currently has a staff of 47, with seven of these in the UK and the remainder in America. However as it grows during 2022, this is anticipated to more than double. The first of the newcomers, a key appointment operating from the New Jersey site, is Alex Wharton. Previously an OEM Master Technician, he has joined Twisted as Technical Manager, concentrating on technical development with a brief covering product improvement, problem solving and future proofing. ‘We have already had significant interest in the New Jersey site,’ comments Twisted USA’s Chief Executive Officer Tom Maxwell, ‘with lots of visitors touring the facility to see what we are capable of, which demonstrates that there is a big appetite in North America for the iconic Defender. ‘Bringing Alex into the team is part of our ongoing growth plans to ensure we’re at the forefront of the market in

terms of product development – as well as enabling our technical team to be the very best it can be, producing Defenders that are modified to be infinitely more powerful, better designed and more comfortable.’ Maxwell inaugurated the Twisted USA-LLC Group in April 2020 after

securing a seven-figure sponsorship deal to take over Twisted’s licences for North America and the Middle East – in addition to the growing electric vehicle arm of the business. Twisted USA’s NA-V8, which was created specifically for the American market, retails from $250,000.

YEAR 2022

welve months ago, at the end of its first year on sale, the Defender surprised no-one when it won the title of 4x4 of the Year for 2021. These awards almost invariably go to newly launched models, and nothing else had come close to matching the impact made by Land Rover’s brilliant newcomer. But now the Defender has pulled off a seismic shock – by winning the overall title for a second year in a row. In the face of stern competition from across the market, the Defender retained its crown in the Off-Roaders class before seeing off the challenge of rivals as diverse as the Dacia Duster, Skoda Enyaq iV, Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT to claim the top step on the podium for a second time. Indeed, one of the Defender’s closest challenges came from the Discovery – whose latest updates meant it once again won the Large SUVs class, despite fierce competition from across the spectrum of prices.

T

The awards, which are organised by our sister title 4x4 magazine, are recognised as the definitive expert barometer of the new 4x4 market. ‘Having waltzed off with the 4x4 of the Year title last year, if anything the Defender’s position is even stronger now,’ said the judges. ‘Land Rover has done so much with it in the last year – it’s been like a whole new launch. ‘The V8 and P400e PHEV engines have taken most of the headlines. But as far as we’re concerned, we’re totally sold on the Hard-Top models. And the new D250 diesel is one of the very best engines we’ve ever experienced, in any vehicle of any kind.’ On the Discovery, judges praised the output and refinement of the vehicle’s various engines, as well as its interior layout, material quality and overall practicality. They commented that almost every kind of road feels like its natural habitat – and that offroad, it’s ‘little short of mesmerising.’ In addition, the Discovery Sport, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport

SVR were all shortlisted in their own categories – the latter two despite now being on run-out. But it was the Defender which, once again, led the way for Land Rover – and indeed for the 4x4 market as a whole.

‘It’s not for want of competition that the Defender has made it two titles in a row,’ said the judges. ‘And it’s got some serious new rivals on the way. But you wouldn’t bet against Land Rover making it three in a row.’

In addition to the Defender’s overall victory, the Discovery was named Best Large SUV in the 2022 4x4 of the Year awards. And the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport SVR and Discovery Sport were all shortlisted in their categories

ights of way users often assume that landowners will be nothing but trouble. For responsible 4x4 drivers, however, the opposite is frequently the case. This was perfectly illustrated recently when members of the Northern Monkey 4x4 Club spent a day repairing Snape Rake Lane in Lancashire – and creating barriers to prevent irresponsible drivers from leaving the right of way to damage the adjoining woodland. The group’s leader Nathaniel Holloway, who is also the Lancashire Rep for the Green Lane Association, was contacted by the landowner and his wife, Mr and Mrs Fitzherbert-Brockholes, following previous maintenance days on which local 4x4 drivers have

helped with repairs to the lane. These repairs have held up well – however the landowners’ call came after the vandals had returned to destroy all the work that had been done to block access to the adjoining river bed. ‘Myself, my youngest lad Isaac, my assistant rep Ali Burgoyne, along with his son Morgan, and fellow Northern Monkey 4x4 member Liam Greenwood had a productive day,’ Nathaniel reports. ‘We’ve blocked off the “off-piste” entry where undesirables have been driving down the river and under the bridge. We’ve shored up the banking and added defences preventing further access to the river upstream of the ford, and we’ve tidied up the boggy mess of wheel ruts.’

Keeping on top of the damage done by the rank criminality of this kind of 4x4 driver is a bit like painting the Forth Bridge. And when the vandals’ arrant selfishness is matched by the archopportunism of a certain kind of landowner, responsible users can be caught in the sort of downward spiral that has been the death of many muchloved lanes in Wales, Derbyshire, Surrey and Yorkshire, among other parts of the country. With luck, however, the team’s efforts will yield long-term rewards. ‘We also now have wildlife cameras installed and I’ve got some signage coming in the post,’ says Nathanial. ‘So once it arrives, I’ll go back down and fit them and hopefully find our hard works paid off.’

Gibson’s Gab

The best 4x4xFar – and then some The Defender has just been named 4x4 of the Year for the second time in a row by our sister magazine. Could it be the greatest 4x4 ever? Words: Tim Gibson DO YOU REMEMBER when Land Rover’s slogan was “The Best 4x4xFar”? I do. Had it plastered in various forms all over my bedroom: stickers, posters, a T-shirt. Even a drinks mat on my desk. And for a long time, it certainly rang true. The Defender was the ultimate off-roader: live axles front and rear, torquey and reliable engines (once the 200 Tdi arrived, at any rate) and fantastic credentials in terms of approach, departure and ramp breakover angles. Indeed, there wasn’t much available in the UK that could beat a Defender in the rough stuff. But then the 1990s arrived, and with them a host of serious competitors.

Jeep entered the UK, and Japanese manufacturers like Mitsubishi and Nissan shaped what would become the SUV revolution. Suddenly, Land Rover’s claim looked rather grandiose. Sure, the Defender was still the best of the bunch off-road. But the others had plenty of capability in that arena, and were often a country mile better on the tarmac. It’s not that the Defender’s core identity as a 4x4 changed, therefore. It’s that the definition of “4x4” adjusted. Now, legendary ability through ruts and deep mud wasn’t the be all and end all. Buyers wanted an all-rounder, and my bedroom walls bore witness to the change. Alongside the pictures of Defenders appeared Patrols, Shoguns,

Cherokees and even the occasional – whisper it softly – Vitara. The world had changed, and the Defender hadn’t kept pace. You know the rest, right? After too many years, Land Rover ditched the vehicle, which had by then become something of a self-parody. The Defender went away for a while and some of us wondered (most probably in these very pages) if it would ever appear in the same guise. Which of course it hasn’t. Because it’s come back as a better vehicle than ever: the consummate all-rounder that still has the beating of its rivals in the mud while being a genuinely pleasurable vehicle to drive on the road, and with all the practicality you could wish

for from a daily driver. Witness the success of the new Defender in various automotive industry awards – not least our sister magazine’s 4x4 of the Year, which it has won for the last two years on the bounce. Looking at the likely competition for 2022, I reckon a hat trick is in the offing, and it would be very well deserved. The Defender is every inch the vehicle it always has been, as the photos I saw recently on the Gumtree 4x4

Facebook page evince. They were of a brand-new 90 up to its wheel arches in mud, interior looking like the outtakes from an episode of Total Wipeout and its owner smiling from ear to ear. One of the reasons for his pleasure is the thought that, with a bit of a wipe down, his steed would be the perfect companion for the asphalt-based journey home. And that, surely, is the holy grail of 21st century off-roading. Best 4x4xFar? You bet – and going

pologies for the unsavoury image, but I’m writing this from my sick bed. I went to see Mansfield v Swindon Town the other day and came away with 1) a lingering sense of outrage, because that was never a penalty, and 2) Covid. It’s going to find us all sooner or later, I guess. Of course, being laid up gives you the opportunity to do a number of things. One of them is of course to pore at length over endless small ads for Land Rovers, and at the time of writing I have a wish list as long as… well, as long as this bloody quarantine feels like. I’ve found a Disco 4 I like the look of, a very nice galvy 110 with an original 200 Tdi in it, a low-mileage P38A… There was a time when I’d have told you that if I ever said I liked the look of a P38A, it would have to be because I was delirious with some sort of virus. Anyway, something I’ve noticed is that a remarkable number of people seem to be selling 110 campers and expedition trucks at the moment. As a person who’s eternally perving at Landies for sale, obviously this just gets me fantasising about carefree independent travel to fabulous places where my family would be so enchanted by nature that they wouldn’t even think to ask where the nearest theme park is or why is there no wi-fi here. But as an observer of all things Land Rover, it worries me that these are lockdown projects which were built on dreams and are now being sold because reality has kicked in and it doesn’t look so pretty. Having spoken to a couple of sellers, they do have other reasons to be getting rid. Which is a relief, to be honest. Because for overlanders, Land Rovers have always meant freedom. During the pandemic, that made them something to hold on to; ‘one day, when all this is over, I’ll climb aboard and take off,’ that kind of thing. People are saying 2022 is going to be a tough year. To me, disappearing in a Landy would be the perfect response. Like me, you might find that family life stops that. But dreaming costs nothing, does it? And it’s a great excuse to keep on poring through those small ads… Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk FP_LRO_458361id4668191.pdf 21.07.2021 12:29

The latest and best kit, tools and accessories for Land Rover owners New Outpost All-Terrain from Nokian promises to combine dependable on and off-road grip with the sort of ruggedness you need from an all-round truck tyre

www.osram.co.uk/ledriving-lights

IF YOUR LAND ROVER is the kind which rolls on tough, hard-wearing tyres that can take everything a knockabout life can throw at them, the new Nokian Outpost AT is likely to be on your list next time you go shopping. Designed ‘to make work productive and leisure limitless,’ this is an all-season, all-terrain tyre for trucks and SUVs that spend their lives on a mixture of on and off-road surfaces. The Outpost is the successor to the well known Rotiiva AT, but it’s more than just a like-for-like replacement. Its tread is significantly deeper, at . mm mm on LT fitments), allowing greater grip than before as well as prolonging its service life. The tyre’s sidewalls are constructed with puncture-resistant aramid fibres embedded beneath the tread, providing what Nokian calls ‘extreme resistance’ to punctures caused by terrain elements like rocks and exposed roots. This also reinforces the sidewalls to help prevent blowouts from pot-holes and other road hazards. On the tread surfaces, meanwhile, the Outpost AT features what Nokian calls ‘Gravel Guards’. These strengthen the bottom of the tyre’s grooves, boosting its protection against rocky terrain and, in Nokian’s words, ‘allowing it to comfortably carve through rugged surfaces.’ On that subject, a series of sub-shoulder peaks which Nokian calls ‘Summit Sidewalls’ promise extra grip when the tire sinks into soft surfaces. They also ‘provide an aesthetically striking design that symbolises the rugged ambitions of the tyre’s drivers.’ The shoulders themselves are notched, encouraging them to cling on to the terrain, with ‘Canyon Cuts’ where they meet the tread. As you’d expect from a tyre made in Finland, the Outpost is an all-weather fitment carrying the three-peak mountain snow ake emblem. Nokian says it’s ‘crafted to combine the versatility of an all-season tyre with winter handling capabilities.’ it’s also designed for efficient running, with a durable rubber compound chosen to minimise rolling resistance and, in turn, emissions. Nokian’s patented Driving Safety Indicator meanwhile, displays the percentage of available tread remaining as the tyre wears, so you can clearly see when they’re on the way out. ‘We crafted the Outpost AT to thrive on mud, snow, gravel and asphalt,’ says Nokian’s R D boss Olli Sepp l . ‘Because traction and grip don’t just reduce our limits; they help us push through our limits and enjoy our journeys.’ “Outpost AT is one of the toughest tires we have ever made. Durability is not only defined by withstanding today’s challenges, but also by providing confidence that the tire will tackle tomorrow’s obstacles.’ And there you were just wanting to know if they do it in a size to fit your Land Rover. find Stone 4x4 Accessories. Despite the distance, this isn’t one of those big multinational outfits that makes everything you can think of for every 4x4 in the world. It’s a husband and wife team who started fitting out a 0 for overland travel and, horrified by the cost, started making their own stuff for it instead. He’s a qualified engineer, so it’s not THAT kind of stuff. Instead, it’s this

kind of stuff. Gull-wing side doors for 90s and 110s: innovative, well made and they do the job. The doors are designed to replace the standard side windows with an easy means of access. Available for hard-tops and station-wagons, they have an aluminium frame and a choice of ally or polycarbonate covers – the latter with a clear or tinted finish. They’re latched from the inside and supported on gas struts when open.

Aluminium doors cost R5445, while polycarb ones are a little more at R 2 0. That’s 2 and 0 in a language you understand, though courier costs do have to be added on top and from South Africa that won’t be cheap. The company does have a dealer in Norway, though, which sounds like a good excuse for a road trip. Anyway, stone4x4accessories.com is your next port of call.

Full mounting kit from Britpart lets you install front-facing rear seats in Defenders from before the Puma era ONE OF THE MOST TIRESOME THINGS about owning a Defender from the otherwise halcyon days before the Puma era is that if you want to carry passengers in the back, the inward-facing seats mean you’re basically asking them to risk life-changing injuries every time they travel with you. Things get even more frightening if you want to carry children in your vehicle – but while many people would very much like a Defender with proper seats in it, the problem is that there are also many people who’d sooner chew their own arm off than drive a Puma. If you’ve researched the options, you may well have found that some of them are even more expensive than having the aforementioned arm sewn back on. The good news, then, is that Britpart’s enormous network of dealers and specialists now offers a solution in the form of its 2nd Row Conversion it. This includes a midcrossmember, two seat supports, two chassis bracket fixing kits and two panels for the front part of the rear wheelarch. You don’t get the actual seats, but what you do get is ‘an ideal kit to install 2007 Puma seats into your pre200 Defender.’ Typically priced at just under £500 including VAT, the kit is available through the usual enormous range of Britpart dealers. If you don’t already have a favoured one, just pay a visit to www.britpart.com.

Car makers like to go on about how their dinky SUVs are tough enough for the city streets. The rest of us know what a properly tough 4x4 looks like… and this smartly rugged 110 from Legacy Overland is a perfect example of how to create a Defender that will make its presence felt rban rugged’ is a phrase car manufacturers like to trot out to describe all manner of cringe-making SUVs and crossovers that get can’t make it up a raised kerb without getting stuck. Not the Defender, though. It’s not urban rugged, surely? It’s just rugged. Maybe that’s what Legacy Overland had in mind when it build the Adirondack 0. This is a thoroughly restored . -litre V8 that looks well on the way to being a hardcore off-road machine – but which the company instead chooses to call ‘unstoppable on the streets.’ Fair enough. It might be a highriding beast on 28 R Cooper Discoverer STT Pros, and you might be looking at it and imagining how nicely a winch, snorkel and exo cage would

This is in Legacy Overland’s own words a hand-crafted interior in high-resilience black leatherette with white accents’. But you can see that for yourself. In addition to the company’s signature white-faced gauges highlights include a charcoal grey alcantara headliner and a very cool Momo wooden steering wheel set if off. But the sense of purpose in its four-square stance gives it more than just off-road credibility. It’s one hell of an imposing sight on the road, too – which, you can’t help but feel, is where its new owner is going to want it to excel. Just to clear up any possibility of a misunderstanding, though, when they describe the 0 as being ‘unstoppable on the streets,’ this isn’t a reference to its brakes. These have been upgraded to discs at the rear, with the calipers painted red to prove the point, so the vehicle is set up to stop the way later ones do. Giving it some motion for the calipers to bite on, the . -litre Rover V8 has been completely rebuilt. It runs on carbs rather than fuel injection, keeping it nice and simple for the future, and it’s mated to a five-speed LT8 Santana gearbox and LT2 0 transfer case – both of which have also been rebuilt. All good and original, then. The driveline is admirably standard, too, with the emphasis having been on refurbishment rather than replacement – though at the end of the axles, those big ” tyres are wrapped around a set of ” Sawtooth alloys. Plenty of work done so far, then, but not too much in the way of major modifications. Yet this is a Defender that bristles with presence nonetheless. An SV grille helps here as do a galvanised steering guard and a powder-coated front bumper with daylight running lights. At the back, meanwhile, there’s a NAS-spec bumper and a full set of LED tail lights. The body cappings are painted black, as is the rear door –

which is very much part of the overall colour scheme. Continue upwards and you get to a black roof, while the bonnet is this colour too – all of it

contrasting with a nice Anvil Grey body. Urban rugged, yeah? Inside, it looks quietly classy – but as with the rest of the vehicle it’s rugged

This is what arrived at the Legacy Overland workshop back at the start of the pro ect. De ntiely rugged but not very urban. It looks pretty good from the outside but the cabin was a bit of a state we’re big fans of gaffer tape and the old-school four-spoke steering wheen from before the Defender era does have a certain charm but you’d be struggling not to look at this and not see an interior that’s ripe for reimagining. Which is of course what the company does so well

too. Legacy Overland describes it as ‘a hand-crafted interior in high-resilience black leatherette with white accents’; highlights include the company’s own custom white-faced gauges, a Momo wooden steering wheel and a charcoal grey alcantara headliner. There’s no small amount of tech in the vehicle, too, including a Sony double-DIN Bluetooth media receiver with Apple Car Play, a 0-watt Pioneer subwoofer, USB charging and a centre console carrying a range of Carling switches. At a slightly more immediate level, the old 0 has been upgraded with electric front windows and a custom air-con system which, unlike the typical units fitted on Defenders, is able to blow hot and cold. This isn’t what you’d call a Land Rover which blows hot and cold in any other sense, though. You might look at it and see a level of off-road intent that it wasn’t really built for, but the sense of

purpose is unmistakable. Mainly, it just oozes presence. As we all know, that’s what all the best Landies do. There’s no such thing as a meek Defender – no, not even an early 0 on .00x tyres – however some are more imposing than others.

This often comes from being built to go off-road, but here’s proof that it doesn’t have to be. There’s rugged, there’s Urban Rugged – and there’s Land Rover rugged. And then there’s this 0. Which is all three

New Golden Age

Words: Dan Fenn Pictures: Jasper Mowatt and Tom Wilkins

With its cab off and its windscreen down, this beautiful Series IIA evokes the golden age of motoring. And having just had a truly sympathetic restoration, it’s set to keep that golden age alive for decades to come

and Rovers were built to take the rough with the smooth. Which is good, because owning one is normally a very bumpy business indeed. But that’s all part of the fun, right? When the unexpected happens, you embrace the challenge and it makes you, and your truck, that much better. It’s fair to assume that when Tom Wilkins bought Dudley, a 1965 Series IIA Pick-Up, he didn’t know what was coming. But it’s probably equally fair to assume that having rolled with the twists and turns of what became a major restoration job, he’s pretty happy with the way things have turned out. For starters, he wouldn’t have expected that about three years later, he would now be its co-owner. But that’s how it turned out, and in a very positive way. ‘Tom bought Dudley from a chap whose father had bought it from new,’ explains Jasper Mowatt, who’s the other half of the co-ownership team.

L

‘He began restoring it and I started giving him a hand. ‘The workload became quite a lot when we saw how much was required. So at that point, I bought into it.’ Now, Jasper is not a bad bloke to have on your side in a situation like this. ‘The restoration has been completed as a hobby,’ he says, ‘so is not professional. But I have previously restored Land Rovers, Volkswagens, Morris Minors and Austins, so it has been done to a good standard.’ Of course, there’s the kind of restored classic that looks like it did when it first left the production line. And it’s easy to see, or at least assume, that those have been done well. But all the work Tom and Jasper have done on their 88 is cunningly disguised beneath a near-perfect skin of patina, the likes of which can only come from decades of real life. It could have been so different, though. ‘We spent the rest of the summer of 2020 doing the chassis and

There was plenty of rotten metal to be dealt with in the chassis and bulkhead alike. This was what prompted Tom to bring Jasper in as co-owner of the vehicle and a partner in the pro ect he’s restored several classics before so welding is not an unfamiliar business to him. Over time the rot was cut out and replaced with new steel then the whole lot was rust treated prepped and painted in readiness for a long and healthy life to come. The engine didn’t need ma or work but a whole new wiring loom was installed to bring the IIA up to date and allow it to run more modern electrical items

bulkhead,’ recalls Jasper. ‘But then winter hit. ‘We both knew that we wanted to have him drivable for the following summer. So we decided to skip the paint job and get him roadworthy. Over that winter, we redid the wiring, steering, brakes – and in the end we had him on the road by January 202 .’ Great going. But how did the lack of a paint job go down? ‘Everyone loved him with the patina effect,’ says Jasper. ‘So we decided to keep it.’ How many old Land Rovers down the years have had their character wiped out by overrestoration, you can’t help but wonder. Clearly, anyway, this is not one of them. Yet just as a slick new coat of paint can hide a shed lurking below, the patina of scars, dents and faded panels can disguise the truth of a vehicle that’s been brought back to better than new. And the more you look at Dudley, the more you see that this is what’s going on here. Wherever the chassis and bulkhead had rusted, it was cut out and replaced with new metal. After that, the whole lot was properly treated, protected and painted to keep it set for a long future. But in actual fact, rust apart the guys were starting from a pretty sound baseline. ‘The engine was in great condition,’ says Jasper. ‘So we did not do a strip down, rather just general routine maintenance. ‘He does run a bit rich, and he leaves a few oil drops when he’s been parked up for a while,

but no more so than is normal for a classic Land Rover.’ The 2.2 petrol unit also now runs a new Webber carb, and to add some stop to the go the braking system was overhauled and given all new lines. The wiring loom was also fully replaced, which was no small job. This allowed Jasper to add a modern fuse box, better lights, a cut-out switch for security and, most importantly, a Bluetooth stereo. Just what you need when the cab’s off ‘We have done our best to keep Dudley as original as possible,’ explains Jasper. ‘But we made upgrades where we felt it would add comfort.’ A new interior featuring leather seats from Exmoor Trim definitely counts as one of these, and Tom and Jasper also invested in a new set of mud-terrain tyres – on black steel modulars, thankfully, which do no harm to the shabby-chic image. Just imagine the havoc they could have wreaked with a set of blingy alloys As it is, Dudley looks good whether he’s smoking around the Dorset lanes, toting a mountain bike or shifting furniture. ‘The tub fits everything,’ says Jasper. ‘We even had a 0-foot book case in there once ’ They’ve used their truck as a wedding car last summer, and there’s not much that can fit the modern-day image of a classic Land Rover better than that. It’s not quite the same as the 88” Series IIA that starred in

Four Weddings and a Funeral (that was a Hard-Top with wing-mounted headlamps, a winch and original wheels), but is it any less cool? Unbolt the cab and, we’d say, quite the opposite is the case. ‘We’ve mainly used it for beach runs around the south coast,’ says Jasper. You’re picturing yourself doing just that now, aren’t you? Which could actually happen. Because much as the guys love their truck, they have it up for sale. Madness, huh?

‘I work abroad,’ says Jasper. ‘I was away in Brazil all summer last year. So I got jealous of Tom having all the fun ‘But Tom is busy with a few other things too. So essentially, we would like to sell as it will give someone else the chance to use him more than we are.’ Doesn’t sound like too much of a hardship, does it? With all the hard work having now been done, Dudley is a Land Rover with as long as life ahead of him as he has already lived. And just about the only thing that’s had fewer

owners since 1965 is Windsor Castle. It’s a blank canvas, or a Landy you can simply climb in and enjoy exactly as it is. Just make sure you think long and hard before putting a spray gun anywhere near all that precious patina. Could you be the person to give Dudley a o ans o o s s ion is a i ’s ans o the second is that if you drop us a line a n i i s assi n n ia o ’ o a i on

Wherever you rest your head…

Defender-based camper conversions are nothing new, and some of them are very good indeed. This one is a bit different, however – because it blurs the distinction between a camper and a fully fledged motorhome Words: Dan Fenn

ou could argue all day long about the distinction between a camper van and a motorhome. Size probably has a lot to do with it, but so does the extent to which a vehicle is fitted out. Unless you’re talking about very high-end conversions based on allterrain lorry platforms, most classic overlanding vehicles would fall into the camper category. Certainly, a Land Rover with a roof tent and a pullout kitchen is definitely more about roughing it than living a life of luxury on the road. But the Defender 0 you’re looking at here does a very good job of blurring the distinction. It’s still a Landy – but the conversion that’s been done to it is on another level entirely. Currently for sale at £49,500, the vehicle is based on a 2007 Defender 110 2.4 TDCi with heavy-duty suspension and a new set of Michelin Ls. It’s a complete one-off and, having been built over the course of the last year and a half, the motorhome part of it is brand new. The Land Rover itself is not, of course, having covered 122,000 miles over the course of a life approaching 15 years to date. As we all know, however, for a good Defender that has little meaning, and a quick look at its MOT history suggests that while it clearly has been used, it hasn’t been ragged. Most importantly, there’s no mention of any rust anywhere on the vehicle, so it was a good sound basis on which to build a home on wheels. Said home was constructed from insulated composite sheeting. These

Y

panels replace everything behind and above the doors and include a very elegant elevating roof which rises on gas struts to create a full-height living area. The windows are insulated, too, and have built-in y screens and blackout blinds.

Inside, there’s a ’4” double bed which turns into a settee and dining table when the vehicle is configured in day mode. Immediately behind the driver’s seat is a 0-litre fridge; a two-burner gas hob and sink unit is located at the back of the living area

on the same side of the body, and between them is a work surface with a pair of lockable pull-out drawers beneath it. If this is in danger of sounding like the version of English you hear from estate agents, that’s because the standard of the conversion, not to

mention the use of space within it, is so strongly reminiscent of the kind of work turned out by the giants of the motorhome world. There’s also a cupboard beneath the sink – while opposite it, beneath a mirrored bathroom cabinet, a ip-up

Space within the motorhome body is used with immense ef ciency to provide an all-round living area. The settee converts into a ’4 double bed and a deployable table is on hand to turn the kitchenette into a dining room. There’s a 30-litre fridge at one end of the galley and a combined sink and twin-burner hob at the other water comes from a 40-litre tank situated between the chassis rails for the best possible weight distribution. The idea of using the toilet in such an enclosed living area might perhaps feel a bit uncomfortable especially as it’s so close to the end of what’s designed to be a shared bed but if the alternative is to stumble outside in the middle of the night and get into an argument with a bear it’s probably not so bad after all

panel opens to reveal a toilet. Given the nature of the beast, you’d probably only use it as a last resort, and the roof tent brigade would probably just point to their shovel and say there, sir, there is your toilet, but a motorhome is a motorhome and when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. And of course this is a Land Rover, so you can go anywhere… Down in the depths of the vehicle, there’s a 40-litre fresh water tank mounted between the chassis rails – ideal for weight distribution, as well as putting otherwise dead space to good use. The gas bottle is housed in an external locker, as is the leisure battery – whose operation is governed by a

12-volt National Luna split-charge system. This all means the vehicle can go off-grid for spells in exaclty the way a Landy should be able to, but for camping closer to civilisation there’s a 240-volt hook-up option too. Definitely the real deal, this. As it should be, of course, at as good as fifty grand. But if there’s one kind of vehicle that holds its value, it’s a Defender. And if there are two, it’s Defenders and motorhomes. So there’s definitely a case for saying that if you can make the initial investment, an investment is exactly what it will be. The vehicle is based near York and you’ll find it for sale on page 4 of this issue of The Landy.

Words and Pictures: Raymond and Nereide Greaves truism you often hear from overlanders is that it’s not the getting there that counts – it’s the journey that you take to get there. Another is that over-

landers absolutely hate being thought of as tourists! Sometimes, though, for a whole lot of different reasons, doing it the touristy way is best. And always, while the

journey does clearly matter a whole lot, you need to be careful not to let the road ahead distract you from what’s around it. By the time our expedition from London to Cape Town had reached Nairobi or Nairobbery, as it’s affectionately known), we had covered 7500 miles. That’s approximately two-thirds of the way, if you were to drive there directly. But driving there directly was the last thing on our minds. We were a little behind schedule, but it was time to put the progress south on pause. There were two good reasons for this. The first was that our Range Rover, to the best of our knowledge the first L 22 ever to make the journey down through Africa, had been utterly brilliant up to now. After 7500 miles of deserts, mountains, bad roads, no roads and extremes of heat and cold alike, plus

lots of lots of dust, it hadn’t used a drop of oil or water, nor even needed any air adding to its tyres. And we wanted to keep it that way. Land Rover has always had a strong presence in Kenya and this would be the first place since Cairo where we could get the Rangie serviced and sorted, complete with full electronic diagnostics. Mike Dunlop, the service manager at the main dealership there, had shown a lot of interest in our trip and, crucially, he was prepared to allow us into his workshop to supervise. He also recommended a local fabricator who could make some bits to reinforce the front mounts on our roof rack, which had proved less than capable when the going got tough. And the second reason for taking a break from our unrelenting progress towards Cape Town? That’s where the

touristy bit comes in. We wanted to see the famous mountain gorillas which live, exclusively in the world now, in national parks on the border of Congo, Uganda and Rwanda. So it was time for an excursion! Now, this wasn’t going to be the sort of excursion you take aboard a large coach which arrives at your hotel and takes you to one over-priced trinket shop after another while your holiday rep stares into her phone and the driver tries to chat her up. No. To do this from Nairobi, you really must want to see gorillas. That’s because it’s a 00-mile round trip involving four days of solid slog over badly mashed up roads. Travelling back north to go round the top of Lake Victoria, the going was pretty good, but from here to the Ugandan border it deteriorated badly,

Journey to the centre of the Earth On any overland journey through Africa, there will be a watershed moment when you cross the Equator. There will also be a point when you really need to get out of your vehicle and do the touristy thing for a while. For a pioneering couple doing the journey in an L322 Range Rover, this meant checking in for a full service in Nairobi – and taking a break to go and chill out, as you do, with some gorillas… with astonishing potholes in places. We saw no less than three overturned lorries, too – what is it with truck drivers in Africa? Our route dipped into the Rift Valley before heading back up to nearly 3000 metres, then down again into the Ugandan lowlands. And we crossed brie y back into the Northern Hemisphere, too, which seemed a bit strange after putting in so much effort to make it south of the Equator! Shortly after entering Uganda, several olive baboons appeared from the bush. We stopped for a good look but, knowing how vicious they can be, we were glad to be making eye contact with them from inside the Range Rover. Further on, we noticed women working alongside the road wearing vibrantly coloured dresses with pointed shoulder pads. Some of them looked as if they should be attending a ball in their shimmering finery, rather than bending down in the reddish-brown mud raking the fields. The landscape, meanwhile, is magnificent. Winston Churchill once said

Uganda is ‘the pearl of Africa’; perhaps he was referring to the extensive green hills, vast lakes, wild animals and rainforest. We thought Ethiopia was impressive, but Uganda is even more so. It’s so vibrantly green, we mused that he should have called it ‘the emerald of Africa’ instead. Approaching the capital, Kampala, we drove through some extremely heavy rains. These seemed to have the same effect as snow does in the UK and everything came to a complete standstill. After an hour of getting nowhere, we decided to pass some traffic and ended up behind an articulated lorry that broke down just as we squeezed in behind it. All forty tonnes rapidly started rolling backwards downhill towards us… it was close, but we managed to dart out of the way just in time to avoid disaster. After that rather dramatic end to a ten-hour slog of a journey, arriving at the hotel we had booked in the middle of ampala definitely felt like reaching an oasis. It wasn’t a city in which to linger, though; a densely packed

population living in a lowland area next to a huge lake makes an excellent breeding ground for malaria, and sure enough it’s teeming with the mosquitoes that spread the disease. And we weren’t here for the mosquitoes. We were here for the gorillas. These intelligent, gentle, awesome animals are at risk of becoming extinct due to the cutting back of their jungle habitat for subsistence farming. There are approximately only 700 mountain gorillas left today, and the national parks clustered around the tri-border area between Congo, Uganda and Rwanda is the only place in the world where you can see them. To limit the number of tourists and finance conservation efforts, there’s a considerable price tag attached to getting a permit to see the gorillas. Even then, they roam freely and can cross national borders at will, so there’s no guarantee that they’ll be at home when you turn up to visit – though a team of trackers does keep tabs on where they are every day, so we were feeling optimistic.

For overlander travellers something like of Africa’s surface area is pretty much heaven on Earth. The other part is really quite a long way in the opposite direction. See if you can guess what it is about this picture that prompted us to make that analogy

To simplify our trip, and give ourselves a break from driving, navigating, planning and organising, we had booked a ‘tracking package’ included permits, local accommodation and a driver to the Mgahingra National Park. We met with our driver and his 4x4 minibus the next day – and embarked on a -hour, 0-mile adventure over endless rough, pothole-strewn roads, through a vast amount of roadworks and over narrow, unpaved mountain passes. The latter had no barriers are by the time we reached them it was dark. By the time we arrived at our accommodation, a simple hostel in

Kisoro, we had been shaken around so much we had literally come up with bruises on our arms and legs. But none of that mattered. The trackers had radioed down to the hostel to say the gorillas were sleeping only two hours trek from the park gates. So we would definitely be able to see them the next day! After a very early breakfast, we set off again in the minibus. To our astonishment, it was able to scale the track to the park gate, which was steep and rocky and looked impassible to us. Oddly, many of the locals along the roadside were giving us very

unwelcoming looks. This was unusual given the hospitality we had witnessed elsewhere in Africa. But then we arrived – to learn that we were the only two visitors that day, so we were going to have the experience all to ourselves! The walk up into the park offered spectacular views of the surrounding region and made us work up a real sweat as we pushed our way through the dense jungle in warm, humid conditions. After two hours, we discovered the area where the gorillas had slept the night before. They only sleep in the same place for one night before moving on, to allow the vegetation they feed from to regenerate, but they must now be close… We didn’t realise how close. Suddenly, a massive roar froze us to the spot. We had happened upon the gorilla family and a silverback (dominant male) was telling us to keep our distance. The trackers seemed completely unfazed by this and led us into a clearing, our hearts thumping. And sitting there, huddled together just a few yards away, were two females, a silverback and two youngsters. Our guide promptly started talking loudly on his radio, which annoyed both us and the gorillas. The females and youngsters moved away from us and up into the trees, leaving us with the silverback.

Lying facing away from us, he was absolutely huge – the trackers reckoned 250 kilos. We watched in hushed awe and then he turned to look at us. We stared straight into each others’ eyes… the memory of that moment will be with us for life. Towards the end of our allotted hour, we had inched towards the group to the extent that we now had two silverbacks to our right and two mothers and babies to our left. The gorillas did not seem to mind at all and were obviously very relaxed around people. However, we actually began to feel we were intruding on their privacy. Signalling to our trackers, we moved away to leave them in peace. We were fortunate enough to have seen six out of the nine gorillas belonging to this group. We could not believe we had been able to stand amidst them, so close and for so long. It almost felt like they had welcomed us into their home for a brief period. In return, we had given them nothing, which made us feel slightly guilty. We just hoped our tracking fees would be put to good use, to protecting their homelands and keeping them safe from poachers. Overall, this had been an amazing experience – a real privilege. On the way out of the park and back to the hostel, we noticed more locals giving us withering looks. Later, we

learned why: they had been relocated from their homes to accommodate the expansion of the conservation park. Although the local community is supposed to be given 25% of the park fees, it really felt as though they had received nothing at all from it. One young child even shouted ‘pay more money ’ after us. What he might not have realised is that to see the gorillas, we actually paid the equivalent of an average Ugandan’s earnings for the entire year, each. But instead of the local communities surrounding the park, much of the money was supposedly going to Kisoro, the nearest main town, for the development of roads, hotels and infrastructure. Not that you would know, given the state of it. Either way, we sure didn’t feel welcome. The next day, we returned to Kampala. Leaving Kisoro at daybreak, we were finally able to see the region that had been cloaked in darkness when we arrived. And it was absolutely stunning; vibrantly green, almost mountainous, the hills covered in a patchwork of small-scale agriculture and with lakes in some of the valleys. It was difficult not to compare it favourably with Switzerland. The landscape here was definitely a highlight of the dusty, bouncy 2-hour slog back to Kampala. We were very

Say what you want about low-pro le tyres but after 500 miles of deserts, rough tracks and roads containing a mi ture of HG damage e tensive litter and the sort of pot holes that could rip one of your a les clean off it speaks volumes for the Range Rover’s Goodyear MTRs that this was the rst at the team suffered. The e perience also demonstrated that wherever you are in Africa, and whatever happens there’ll always be someone ready to materialise out of nowhere to help you

pleased to be back in the smooth, cool, dust-free Rangie instead of the rattling minibus for the rest of the journey back to Nairobi! We made haste to reach Kenya the following day but came a cropper in a remote village about 70 miles before the border when we finally got our first at tyre of the trip. From nowhere, three young men appeared and assisted us with jacking the vehicle and replacing the wheel with one of our two spares. Unfortunately, the damaged tyre was beyond repair. And it’s always wise to maintain two spares when travelling

through Africa – which, given that we were on ” Goodyear MTRs, meant we were going to have to start thinking about getting one brought out by a courier. Damn. All this had cost us an hour, and we were already tight on time to reach the lodge we’d booked at Lake Naivasha, enya, before dark. We weren’t speeding – we knew better than to take that risk – but we were doing the speed limit of 80km/h when three policemen with a speed gun pulled us over. We were in a 50km/h zone, apparently – bizarre, because it was what

seemed like the only bit of dual-carriageway in the whole country! Laying on the charm, we waxed lyrical about how beautiful Uganda was. what a great time we had had seeing the gorillas and how everyone had been so friendly… and amazingly, we pulled it off ’Seeing as you are a visitor, we will let you off on this occasion and hope that you leave Uganda with a good impression ’ Job done, officer – we certainly did. We managed to keep the border crossing to just half and hour, then after another few hundred miles of pot holes

and truck ruts we were at last back on to smooth tarmac. Finally, we arrived at the turn-off for our lodge after ten hours of solid motoring. Oh dear. We had booked it without realising that it was about miles away from the road, on a truly horrendous track littered with sharp rocks and harsh corrugations. Not good when you’re down to your last spare tyre. To make matters worse, a sudden heavy downpour ensued and it grew dark rapidly. The road got steeper, rockier and even more deeply potholed. This was not fun.

29

Finally, after about an hour, we arrived at the lodge and a ood of staff rushed out to greet us. They’d have been better to hang back for a minute until our moods had calmed down… Driving on African roads all day can just grind you down until you are in a foul mood like this. Woe betide the person who then gets in your way! Fortunately, the staff had seen it all before, so they bundled us into the dining room for a proper home cooked meal which made us feel human again. We were staying at Olerai House on the shores of Lake Naivasha, which we

would recommend wholeheartedly. The food is amazing, the staff are experts in service and the rooms are bright and airy – and outside, there are acres of private garden in which to enjoy in the glorious sunshine. We sat down to breakfast overlooking the grasslands and watched gazelles shoot out across the plains with their distinctive tall black antlers and white striped bodies. We agreed to take a walk of the grounds down to the lake with Alfred, head of the lodge, and Lekoko, a true Maasai warrior. We were able to walk right up to a group of five giraffes a few hundred metres away from the lodge which stood chewing gently as they kept an eye on us – it’s not until you get this close that you realise just how graceful they are. Walking closer to the lake, we saw two big herds of buffalo grazing. Then, on the way back towards the lodge, six zebras emerged from the woods. Colo-

bus monkeys were scampering around in the trees, and to top if off a troupe of olive baboons raced across the horizon screaming and fighting each other. What a wonderful place! Actually, that’s not what topped it off. That evening, as we sat down to supper in the main house, out of the blue we heard a terrible, primeval roar. It was utterly chilling. Lekoko appeared and ushered us out into the garden, and shining a torch out into the darkness we could see the source of the racket. Hippos! Loads of them! Fifty metres away! Three of these enormous creatures raced out of the small lake in front of the house while several others, roaring at each other with their jaws wide open, fought together in the background. What an amazing sight! We had only planned to stay one night at Olerai but ended up staying two. It’s that sort of place. We needed to get back to Nairobi, however – be-

cause we had had an amazing piece of luck. Trying to figure out how best to get our hands on a new spare tyre, we had rung good old Mike Dunlop at Land Rover to see if he could get one couriered out to them – whereupon he explained that after he had seen our Range Rover, he was so impressed with the tyres we were using that he had ordered a large batch for his customers and they had just arrived at the main Goodyear agent in Nairobi Reeling in disbelief at our good fortune, we headed straight back to Nairobi, bought the tyre and took it to Land Rover for them to fit it. By now it was starting to get late, and rush hour was in full swing outside. No thanks. So we opened up the Range Rover’s fridge and invited Mike to join us in a gin and tonic, then sipped our drinks surrounded by assorted Land Rovers in the workshop while laughing at the eccentricity of it all.

So now we had a full set of spare wheels once more, and we could continue on to Tanzania the following morning with a fully serviced and refreshed Range Rover. We were about ten days behind schedule by now, but we were in a good place. It’s not getting there that counts, after all – it’s the journey. And no-one should ever worry about arriving late when that journey includes a detour to make friends with the mountain gorillas of Uganda.

GREEN LANE GUIDE

North-East Norfolk

Late last year, a car manufacturer did some reasearch which found that 17% of SUV owners wish they could have more adventures in their vehicles. Well, if that’s you, and you bought your Freelander or Evoque because you loved the idea of being able to explore the countryside when you’re not doing the school run, this roadbook is ideally suited to you. It won’t get you muddy, scratch up your paintwork or have you shuttling in and out of low box all day long (or wishing you had it) – but it certainly is an adventure, tying together a wide variety of well surfaced farm tracks and quiet, narrow lanes in a gently scenic corner of rural East Anglia ROUTE NOTES START FINISH DISTANCE TIME TERRAIN HAZARDS OS MAPS TYRES WEATHER LOW BOX DRIVING DAMAGE

Brancaster (TF 774 438) Nr King’s Lynn (TF 670 199) 44.65 miles 3-4 hours Gently rolling farmland Walkers, cyclists and horse riders; Fast-moving road traffic; Farm vehicles Landranger 132 (North West Norfolk) Very low-profile SUV tyres might not like stony tracks Driveable in all weathers, but be sensible when very wet Not necessary Easy, but needs good navigation Minimal risk of scratching. No obvious risk of other damage unless driven without care

RESPONSIBILITY Irresponsible driving is a big issue on green lanes. In particular, you must always stay on the right of way. Never drive off it to ‘play’ on the verges or surrounding land, even if you can see that someone else has; doing so is illegal and can be tremendously damaging. This kind of illegal off-roading is a key reason why green lanes get closed. Drivers who do this may be fellow Land Rover owners actually, chances are their vehicles

The Landy Buyer

All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy

A Hidden Secret?

P

epole have Land Rovers for many reasons. But when all’s said and done, if you’re into them it stands to reason that you’re probably into off-roading, too. In which, case, you’re not interested in a Freelander, right?

It ain’t necessarily so. As Defenders have become too valuable to rag, and old Discos have become scarce, many people have turned to the early Freelander as an off-road toy. It has its limitations, of course. And its reliability record goes before it like the

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.2 -litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 80, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 2 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 0s and 0s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

sound of an advancing army. But you can modify them – mainly with ingenuity and DIY skills rather than a big wallet and a spanner man on call – and done right, the result is a stout little number with real off-road skills and the ability to take some hefty knocks without crying. It’s probably a one-way street in a way that off-roading a Defender isn’t. But when old Freelanders are so cheap as to be virtually disposable, there’s a lot of

£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s

£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models

£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Appearance isn’t to everyone’s taste. Exclusivity over regular models means they command a price premium

£2500-£19,000 A very early 2.2 petrol 0 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2. natasp diesel they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: Excellent parts availa ility. Easy to work on. Unlimited potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition

much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.2 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2 00 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.2 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop Pros: A Land Rover like no other, if that’s what you want Cons: Especially rutal to drive, and to nd parts

The Series II IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real

101 (1972-1978)

Only ever sold to the Army, the 0 became a cult vehicle when

£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were ogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA IIB FC, the 0 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

The 2 was built on a special production line in Solihull which

and fittings from their Army life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards. Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V soundtrack. Every ody who sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running costs. Expensive to uy, too

£7500-£25,000 took 0 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a 2 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 0, so the 2 is more of an enthusiast’s

motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 2 s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: Enormous si e means limitless potential and character Cons: Unwieldy. Sure to have had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£29,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes a tall order) and it’ll go round and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 00. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.

Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)

The 00 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though

the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 00 Tdi also brought with it the R 80 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve

Defender TDCi (2007-2016)

The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and

smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of ahn or Twisted have been

The LT gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R 80, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around

£4500-£30,000

When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the

0 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 2 , it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 0 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 0, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road Pros: Strength and simplicity. erhaps the de nitive Defender Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory

The Td engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s

As a result, you’ll find many more original ish) 0s than 2 s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further. a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis. Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td Defender can

still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well suited to eing modi ed Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles

£45,000-£105,000

to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,

making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value the way an original-shaper does, either. Be in no doubt, though – this is a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, rugged tness for purpose Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks the old one’s asic charm

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

The Freelander is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The .8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much

£400-£5500 more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model

£2000-£19,500

it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a

bargain search out one with the unpopular .2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – 0,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: Relia ility, re nement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £5000-£85,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000

The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there

are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CS and LSE can be a gold mine.

Range Rover L322 (2002-12)

The Mk Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-

liable than the P 8. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the . has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and

An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

£2250-£28,000

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to

own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably aky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t

Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £27,000-£220,000

This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs

The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the

£32500-£25,000

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)

You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery , it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. Expect horri c running costs

£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with 4WD. Pros: Economy, handling, iconic concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the amboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on)

Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new

The Velar a competent cruiser and has received numerous accolades

other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price

The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,

Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price

£22,500-£190,000

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £31,500-£95,000 Discovery 1 (1989-1998) because of its particularly handsome exterior. It’s based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace but has greater off-road ability and is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with

spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get. Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust Cons: Electrics. Be very afraid

with the same 00” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, exible cabin. It was well equipped and refined, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: erformance, re nement, glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run

£31,600-£55,000 hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D 0 Evoque escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive. Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid

£1000-£18,000 and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 00Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts availa ility. Epic off-road a ility Cons: The ody rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td engine, one of Land Rover’s most

most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

Discovery 5 (2017-on)

The Discovery is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it. All the engines in the range are refined and exible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

£1100-£9000 models had air-suspension, with all the horrors that brings. Mainly, D2 owners will tell you about rogue electronics. And leaky sunroofs. They still love their trucks, though, which says a lot. Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, lots of choice Cons: Chassis rust, electronics, leaky sunroofs, air suspension

£25,600-£80,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)

The Disco is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road

and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally at rear load area. The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always

Discovery Sport (2015-19)

The Discovery Sport packs seven seats into a Freelander-sized

body and dishes up an appealing all-round blend of comfort, kit and general driving manners. The third row of seats is only suitable for little ‘uns, though, and off-road it’s a Discovery in name only. It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque, and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes. You

Discovery Sport (2019-on) The second-generation Discovery Sport arrived only four years after the first. That’s because once again, it’s related to the Evoque, which was launched several years earlier and was therefore ready for a full new model in 20 .

£2950-£38,000 be maintenance costs – infamously, the timing belt is a body-off job, and rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too. Pros: All-round ability, stunning practicality, luxury and kit on high-speccers Cons: Cam belts, handbrakes air suspension… the list goes on

£15,000-£35,000 might shudder at the price if you’re buying new, though – but on the used market, there are some tidy looking deals to be had, even on high-spec examples. Pros: More practical than an Evo ue, and less vulgar. Seven seats. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models

£21,000-£52,000 The Disco Sport is a premium medium-sized SUV. It’s available with seven seats and, by the standards of the competition, models with four-wheel drive offer a decent level of off-road ability. It’s a massively popular choice

for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid early last year, as a company car. uality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of

excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing pre-

mium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models

LAND ROVER LOVES TO describe its vehicles as ‘the best 4x4xFar.’ Well, we’ve just found ‘the best build by far.’ That’s the claim this Discovery 2’s owner makes for it. And you’d do well not to dismiss it at first glance as just another of those headbanger projects you see being battered to death in quarries. For one thing, it’s the product of a full body-off restoration. For another, the guy who built it says the project took 12 months and involved some £6000 of parts. These include a 7” suspension lift and 3” body lift. Make no mistake, this truck is big. It’s rolling on a set of 33” CST Land Dragon tyres in the classic Simex pattern; that’s pretty tall stuff by Disco standards, but the amount of space even these leave beneath its wheelarches is almost comical. The front shocks are mounted in tubular towers, while the rear is coil-sprung and controlled by relocation cones and a high-angle Watts linkage. Elsewhere, the Td5 engine has been mapped for off-road use. Mated to a manual gearbox, i t breathes in through a snorkel and out through a side-exit exhaust – and, no small matter, there are ‘no nasty lights on the dash.’ Anyone who has off-roaded a Discovery 2 and is familiar with the infamous three amigos will know exactly what this means… Up front, a custom tubular bumper mounts a hidden Rhino winch between its swept, back end portions. The rear bumper is a custom job too, this time fabricated from steel plate, and in between is a set of heavy-duty rock sliders complete with tubular nerf bars. Down below, there’s a heavy-duty steering

guard at the front; both axles are protected by diff guards, while the rear portion of the chassis is skinned in chequer plate to help the vehicle slide over obstacles and also provide some extra armour for the fuel tank. Being from 1999, this is a fairly early Disco 2. Not that there’s such a thing as a recent one any more, obviously. But its owner stresses that all the welding has been done and that there’s ‘no rust or rot’ to be found anywhere on it. ’This has been modified to a high standard’ is his proud boast, along with the promise that it runs and drives ‘spot on.’ Most of all, he says, the Disco has never been off-road. Why go to all this time and expense to create such a capable looking truck if you’re not going to use it, we have to ask… the answer is normally that once you’ve finished the job, you find yourself unable to escape the conclusion that the vehicle is now just too nice to trash. Which means you, dear reader, get the chance to trash it instead. ‘Make an offer please’ is one of the most promising things we’ve heard in a long time from someone selling a Land Rover, and with an asking price of £7695 that leaves you plenty of scope to get a hell of a lot of truck for your money. Interested? The Disco is based in Calne, so you’ve got the odd couple of hundred miles of green lanes within a few miles of you once you’ve picked it up, and as you read this it’s a couple of page turns away.

Is it a V8, by any chance…?

THERE’S A CERTAIN KIND of Land Rover owner who loves badges and stickers. You always know you’ve found one when you see a completely standard Discovery 2 going up the road with the words ONE LIFE LIVE IT proudly emblazoned across its back window. It’s not limited to just Land Rovers, of course, far less to Camel casualties. But you know the kind of thing we mean. Lots of shouting and nothing to shout about is rarely a good look. So it’s refreshing to find a truck whose badges (and there are a whole lot of them) do actually have a point to make. In the case of this 110, the point is very much that it’s a V8.

We lost count at about 10, but there’s not going to be much doubt in anybody’s mind that this ain’t some smoky old oil burner. Dating from 1989, it’s a 12-seat station wagon with a proper 3.5 under its bonnet and it has covered just under 140,000 miles – while being fastidiously looked after by its current owner, who happens to be a mechanic and can therefore be relied upon to know what it takes to keep an old truck in good health. Said owner has a trailer to throw in too, should you want to make the most of the V8 engine’s undeniable grunt. And with ‘excellent history’ plus four brand new Toyo Open Country M/Ts under its arches, it promises to be good to go well beyond June, when its next date with the MOT man comes up. At £16,750, this is definitely not the cheapest 110 around. But it’s a big old truck for your money – and of course you get a load of stickers for your cash too. It’s advertised on this very page.
