ultimate Discovery 2 – how new range of to uality hel create an off road icon

errafirma has launched a major new range of off-road accessories for the Land Rover Discovery 2. Designed to help turn the vehicle into a workable alternative to the old-shape Defender, this includes suspension upgrades, armour, recovery equipment and more. ‘With Defender values skyrocketing and their owners feeling precious about getting them dirty,’ explains Terrafirma, ‘the Discovery 2 now has a lot of appeal. It’s relatively easy to work on, comfortable, capable and affordable. ‘Land Rover directed a lot of effort into improving the road manners of the D2 over its predecessor, to such an ex-

T

tent that some of its off-road credentials were compromised. This has provided the development team at Terrafirma with the perfect opportunity to enhance its off-road performance with not just the target of matching a well set up Defender, but also to create a brand new look.’ Leading the way on the latter point is Terrafirma’s new ‘Raid’ style winch bumper. With tubular construction and infill panels with swaged holes, this was inspired by Baja and rally raid spaceframe vehicles whose design combines light weight with extreme strength. Terrafirma’s bumper improves the Disco 2’s approach angle while also offering

good protection against impacts and a sturdy mounting point for a winch. There’s also a matching rear bumper, which will accept the vehicle’s original tail lights and can incorporate both standard towing equipment and Terrafirma’s own receiver hitches. In addition, it can be specified with a swing-away spare wheel carrier on one side and a jerry can shovel and high-lift jack carrier on the other. Both bumpers are fitted with swivel recovery points. And to complement the Raid bumpers, a new set of rock sliders has been introduced to create a barrier between the Disco 2’s sills and any ill-intentioned rocks or tree stumps.

You wouldn’t expect all this to come without a suspension lift, and Terrafirma offers a solution here too. More than one solution, in fact. ‘To follow a Defender through the rocks,’ it says, ‘a brand new set of ” travel -Stage Adjustable Remote Reservoir shocks have been specified which when fitted can enable the D2 to flex with the best. Add front and rear hydraulic bump stops and you can tackle obstacles in full attack mode. ‘For something less extreme, the ” -Stage Adjustable Shocks give four levels of damping from comfort through to sport, while significantly increasing wheel travel.’

Good suspension is not just about the springs and shocks, of course, and Terrafirma offers everything you could imagine in the way of associated hardware. High-angle watts linkages, caster correction bushes, dislocation cones, anti-roll bar links, extended turrets, crossmember spacers… there’s a world of ways in which you can make a Disco 2 better off-road, and they’re all covered here. On the steering front, Terrafirma’s well known RTC damper can be fitted using a kit tailored to the Disco 2. And since stopping matters every bit as much as going, the company’s wavy-edged CDG brake discs are now available for the vehicle. These promise significantly improved stopping power, especially when combined with Terrafirma’s Performance brake pads and 2” or ” long stainless brake hoses. As always, braking can be an easy area to overlook when you’re speccing up an off-road project. But it doesn’t take much of an increase in tyre size to make brake fade an issue – we used to run one a Disco 2 with a V engine, auto box and no compression braking at all – and even just on 2 R1 s, we’ll never forget how alarming things could get on the way down long hills. Terrafirma recommends that to avoid rubbing, 2 R1 is indeed the ideal size for a Discovery 2 built using its new range of kit. You won’t need to worry about messing up your overall gearing at this size, either – and though a height of 1. ” sounds like not a lot compared to the madcap Defenders you still see from time to time, in the real world and in the right hands that’s more than enough for a Disco 2 to be able to follow almost everywhere the heavy mob can go. Further items in Terrafirma’s new range include a spare wheel mount to let you fit a tyre of this size on the Disco 2’s back door. And of course there’s always room for a snorkel: also new to the range, this has a reversible ram air intake made from high grade UV and temperature-stable rotational moulded plastic. ‘Terrafirma’s new range of Raid Inspired accessories and long-travel suspension set-ups will give your Discovery 2 a fantastic new look and incredible off-road capability,’ says the company. If you’re decent with the spanners, you should be able to instal everything you see here on your driveway, and Terrafirma promises that in doing so you’ll only need to make the minimum in the way of cuts or mods to the vehicle itself. You can find out more by visiting terrafirma x .com.

Defender shows its star quality on Dark Sky mission to the Scottish Highlands recent expedition to the Highlands of Scotland saw three Land Rover Defenders leave the road behind in search of Britain’s best location for stargazing. Exploring the 14,500-acre Ben Damph Estate on Upper Loch Torridon, the vehicles ended up eight miles from the nearest road at a point where, with no trees to obscure the view and a complete lack of light pollution, the conditions ticked every box laid out by consultant expert Dr Jennifer Milard for an ideal view of the skies. Unlikely though it may sound, Britain is home to some of Europe’s largest areas of Dark Sky – officially designated reserves with low levels of light pollution. This means that even if you’re not able to travel into a massive private estate in search of the perfect place for viewing the heavens, you’re still likely to have great locations nearby – and of course owning a Land Rover means you can find better ones than everybody else. You don’t even need to take a telescope with you. Dr Milard explains that even with the naked eye, you can see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn (easily identifiable as ‘stars’ that don’t twinkle), distant constellations, nebulae and star clusters, the Milky Way galaxy and regular shooting stars, as well as a surprising level of detail on the surface of the moon.

A

Arm yourself with a pair of binoculars and you can see Neptune and Uranus, lunar craters and four of Jupiter’s moons, as well as much greater details of more distant objects like stars, galaxies and nebulae. With a telescope, meanwhile, celestial wonders like Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s stripes, Mars’ polar ice caps and even distant comets can become visible. All of this depends on the view not being polluted by local light, which is

why being able to find the right Dark Sky locations is so important – and Land Rover has provided a list of ten of Britain’s best. In addition, Dr Milard advises that once you’ve arrived, it takes around half an hour for your eyes to become fully ‘dark adapted’ – so get your face out of your phone, use a red-light torch and switch off your Land Rover’s headlamps. Yes, even the kind you get on old Series trucks will hamper your eyes’ ability to see the stars. For the same reason, moonless nights are best for seeing what else is in the sky. Then, with things like star maps and a compass to aid you (there are stargazing apps too, but again only use them in conjunction with a red-light filter on your device), you can start checking out the wonders above. Dr Milard does have one other tip, though: wrap up warm. Stargazing involves a lot of standing still, and of course you do it at night, so it’s easy to get cold. And the last thing you want is to be scurrying back off to the comfort of your warm Landy just when things are starting to get interesting… especially if it’s the aforementioned Series truck and all you’re going to get is a burnt shin for your troubles.

Urgent action needed to save unsurfaced rights of way from threat of mass closure LAND ROVER OWERS, and all those who believe in the value of freedom, are being urged to respond to a government consultation on banning the use of motor vehicles on green lanes. Part of DEFRA’s Landscapes Review, the consultation was originally intended to advise the government on how best to manage England’s national parks. However it was later adapted to include explicit reference to green laning. This provides a clear opportunity for the anti-vehicle movement, a well funded and influential assortment of rich landowners, quasi-environmentalists and organisations purporting to represent other user groups. While Land Rover drivers and organisations like the Green Lane Association (GLASS) have become known for upholding a code of conduct, abiding by voluntary restraint and even offering labour to help keep rights of way in good repair, those opposed to motor vehicle use have continued to be absolute in their refusal to tolerate sharing the countryside. As well as its unwillingness to compromise, the anti-vehicle movement is characterised by the extreme dishonesty with which it paints all 4x4 users as vandals and hooligans. While a criminal fringe does exist, those opposed to freedom are never slow to present them as the norm – something which, like all fake news, is all too easy for an uncritical public to believe. As a result, anti-4x4 sentiment is rife among people who, in their own minds, simply have no reason not to believe the militants’ propoganda. And with those same militants rallying as many of their supporters as possible to respond to the consultation, the Landscapes Review now presents

what GLASS describes as ‘a clear and present danger’ to Land Rover owners and other motor vehicle users. ‘Anti-access organisations are seeking to end or seriously reduce our access rights by lobbying at local and national level,’ says GLASS. ‘Their aim is to rally as many sympathetic antis as possible to submit responses. It is therefore VITAL that we respond to protect our interests. Please make every effort to respond. ‘A public consultation should not be about simply counting the number of responses. But the weight of responses

will be an indication of the strength of feeling. Those opposed to motor vehicle use will certainly aim to respond in large numbers and so we need to counter that potential threat.’ The web address for the consulation is too long to include here, but if you search for ‘Landscapes Review consultation’ it should appear at the top. It was still open at the time of going to press, though it will close at 11.45pm on 9 April; if you have got your hands on this issue of The Landy in time, please do take the time to make your feelings known.

Advice from the Green Lane Association on completing the DEFRA Landscapes Review consultation • Be polite • Concentrate on the benefits of green laning and why you love it • Be succinct; don’t rant, or attack others • Use your own words • If you have needs that mean using a vehicle is vital, explain why motoring is essential to you and how it helps you access the countryside • Talk about any activities you have undertaken that benefit the countryside, such as volunteer work, 4x4 response/rescue, lane repairs, litter picking, sharing advice and education with others and reporting incidents • Provide estimates to show how much money you spend in the rural economy when green laning • Mention any professional interest you have in green lanes • Be an advocate for access without prejudice. Make your arguments positive and in favour of access for all users

NERC2: NOW THEY WANT TO CLOSE ALL THE LANES

B

ritain’s green lane users are bracing themselves for another assault on the nation’s byways and unsurfaced roads. The Government’s Deregulation Bill, which is meant to simplify the way laws are made, contains a section on rights of way – and anti-4x4 campaigners have already made efforts to hijack the process. The Green Lane Association warned its members in January that anti-4x4 groups had proposed additions to the draft bill that would turn all BOATs and UCRs into restricted byways. This would outlaw green laning. The committee handling the bill has noted that although rights of way is only part of it, the subject accounted for more than 50% of the responses

to its first draft. The brief it set itself was to resist any attempts to modify the purpose of the bill, but it has been startled by the level of controversy over rights of way: ‘Given the level of public interest in rights of way… we draw to the attention of the Government the wider rights of way concerns raised in the course of this inquiry and urge them to take action to meet them.’ This points to a major battle to come, but GLASS is urging its members not to take their eyes off the ball in the short term. ‘We have to make sure that all MPs are fully informed as to the real facts about green laning, with good reasons for not adding restrictions. ‘You may not see the point in writing to your MP. But the other side do, and

have. The number of anti green laning submissions made to the committee has brought the desired result for the antis. Unless we ALL take the trouble to write, we will see no green laning left at all.’ Following the bill’s first reading in the House of Commons, GLASS reported DEFRA’s view that policy on motor vehicle use should be subjected to a full public consultation. ‘It seems to us that the government don’t want the hassle of this in the Deregulation Bill,’ it says, ‘but are open to changing legislation in the future.’ With the threat of hijack ever present, GLASS will continue to monitor the bill as it progresses through Parliament. But the real battle does seem to lie

£2500 for a Wolf?

ahead. ‘Therefore,’ it concludes, we must work together to stop the people who abuse unsurfaced roads and seem hell bent on getting us banned from driving them.’ BLOCKED: Illegal obstructions are already common on Britain’s byways. If the antis get their way, there won’t be rights left for anyone but them

Project-ready 90 crops up at tiny cash. But there’s a catch…

DATELINE 2014 Headline stories from Issue 1 of The Landy

IS THIS THE CHEAPEST WOLF OF ALL TIME? Leavesley International is currently holding this 1998 LHD 90 soft-top prior to offering it for sale – at around £2500. Even a heavily crashed Wolf can make strong money, so what’s the catch? It’s this: the 90 comes without a drivetrain. Look under the bonnet, and there’s no engine to be seen. Same goes for the gearbox, transfer case and props. But although the vehicle could use a little love inside and out, whoever buys it is going to get an awful lot of good stuff. Like a Wolf chassis and crossmember, obviously. A Wolf bulkhead, Wolf axles, Wolf springs and shocks… basically, many of the features that make this vehicle so much more desirable than your average ex-military Defender. Just the two shocks, though – the ones from the back are added to the list of bits posted AWOL. With 300Tdi engines and R380 gearboxes fetching nothing like as much as they used to on eBay, putting this truck back on the road shouldn’t cost you more than about another grand if you’re willing to get your hands dirty. Definitely the most exciting projectready Defender we’ve seen in a while.

Don’t like the new Defender? Tough.

L

and Rover’s design boss Gerry McGovern spelt out the company’s plans for the new Defender at the recent New Delhi Auto Expo. And if you think the truck looks fine just the way it is, the message is blunt: things are going to change.

And you’re going to have to lump it. Quoted by the Headlineauto news agency, McGovern appeared to confirm that the Defender’s replacement will be revolutionary in terms of appearance and engineering. The reason is simple: the current one doesn’t sell enough.

Solihull currently builds around 20,000 Defenders a year, but McGovern said this number needs to increase dramatically to make the project worthwhile. ‘We are still making the business case. Ultimately, the new model will have to wash its face. We need to be looking at 100,000 vehicles a year – and so we have to broaden its appeal.’ More than two years have passed since Land Rover horrified traditionalists with the DC100 concept. That vehicle was a clear statement that the Defender’s future lay in mass-market appeal, and McGovern backed this up at the time: ‘There’s no point trying to replicate a vehicle that was designed sixty years ago. Legislation has changed. People’s expectations have changed. We need to create something that’s modern, contemporary and

absolutely relevant to a world that’s changed considerably.’ Today, the starkness of McGovern’s message couldn’t be clearer. ‘What we

are working on is something that will be more desirable to look at. The traditionalists might not like it – but they’ll have to live with it.’

SO IS DC100 REALLY THE NEW DEFENDER? ‘A Defender doesn’t have to look overtly functional,’ insists Gerry McGovern. ‘We are taking a more sophisticated approach.’ Land Rover was stung by the strength of feeling against the DC100 concept from among traditional Defender owners. But business realities mean appealing to a wider, more modern audience. And that could be bad news if you like your 90s and 110s just the way they are. ’The important thing is to get the proportions right,’ says McGovern. ‘Give it a distinctive silhouette and wider appeal. ‘We need to make the Defender more aerodynamic. But it will still be as capable as before and there will be references to the old model. It might even have a spare wheel on the back!’

Green lanes £1000 better off after North Somerset LRC makes major donation to GLASS fighting fund

DATELINE 2014 Headline stories from Issue 1 of The Landy

MEET THE LAND ROVER CLUB that gave away a grand. Inspired by the Green Lane Association’s successful legal challenge to three TROs wrongly imposed by Powys County Council, the North Somerset LRC voted on a proposal to donate £1000 to its green lane fighting fund – and it was approved unanimously. The donation, which was made just before Christmas, wasn’t the result of any kind of charity fundraiser. Instead, every penny came straight from the club’s own pocket. It came about after the club’s longest-serving active member had attended her first annual general meeting as a member of GLASS. Marilyn Davies was also one of the first individuals to join the organisation after it was set up back in 1995 – and having seen it in action, she decided to propose the move at the NSLRC’s own AGM in November. ‘We have for many years enjoyed regular green lane trips in the South West and Wales,’ explained Club Chairman Tom Parkes. ‘Over these years, we have collected a small annual membership fee, but as we mostly go green laning there has not been much to spend the money on. We thought it was time we should, as a club, put something back to support the lanes we love.’ ‘I got the impression that Tom was going to do it anyway,’ adds Marilyn. ‘But having been so impressed by GLASS when I went to their AGM, I suggested this was particularly well worth supporting. ‘All the same, I thought that maybe we would donate a few hundred pounds. I was astonished when Tom suggested a sum of £1000 – but I was delighted that it was approved 100% unanimously.’ The TROs which will be quashed as a result of the Powys case apply to lanes including the famous Moelfre City and Water Break Its Neck. ‘We have been particularly pleased with GLASS’ recent success in Powys,’ comments Tom. ‘We hope this will have a significant impact on the number and quality of lanes accessible to us in Mid-Wales.’

Avoid the two-car trap… With rising fuel prices, you may be tempted to invest in a “sensible” car and keep your Landy for fun. But you won’t be any better off Words: Tim Gibson ABOUT 100 YEARS AGO, I was the deputy editor of a magazine called Total Off Road. My boss was a certain Alan Kidd, already a towering figure in the world of 4x4 journalism and someone whose work I’d admired since the age of about 13. I well remember Alan and me sitting around in hotel bars after various muddy adventures and wondering how long it would be before our luck ran out and we had to do some boring journalism job that didn’t involve getting paid to go laning. For Mister Kidd, that day is yet to come. It’s no mean feat that The Landy is now on its 100th issue, or that the

other title he oversees, 4x4, is about to celebrate 40 years in press. Turns out he’s pretty good at this malarkey, evincing that old dictum associated with the golfer Gary Player: “The more I practise, the luckier I get.” But, so as to quickly draw a veil over the implications of these anniversaries for our combined ages, let me get to the point. You see, back in those heady days I worked my way through a variety of tricked-up off-roaders that were truly horrible to drive long-distance and cost an arm and a leg to fuel. So I hit upon the bright idea of buying a second car. It was a burgundy Ford Focus LX estate that sipped fuel, stayed unerringly in-lane on the motorway and had the world’s comfiest velour seats.

My bright idea was to use my off-roader for muddy adventures and drive the boring Ford the rest of the time, thereby reducing fuel bills and easing fatigue on my frequent long journeys. The second half of that plan worked out just fine. Having grown accustomed to arriving in places like Thirsk after a drive from the South West with aching limbs, red eyes and teeth on the verge of falling out, I was initially surprised to reach my destination with a pleasing sense of calm, as if I’d just spent a week on a silent Buddhist retreat in Pembrokeshire rather than bouncing around the UK’s public highways. But the cost-saving part of the plan certainly didn’t deliver. Far from reducing my bills, the second car made me

poorer than ever, with double expenditure for everything and – ironically – an increase in my overall fuel costs. I mention this because I can see the temptation of adopting the two-car strategy in the current economic climate. You see the cost of filling your Land Rover and think it’d be better to park it up for weekend fun and buy a cheap little runabout. But I urge you to resist. The only way to save money is to lose your Landy altogether, and that’s a step that most will find intolerable.

Like our friend Mister Kidd, for example. Far from divesting himself of gas-guzzling vehicles, he’s just added to his fleet with a Discovery 2 which, he learned on the way home, costs north of £140 to refuel from empty. Which just goes to show. He may be an extraordinarily talented journalist and editor – the best I’ve worked with during 25 years in the trade, in fact. But when it comes to making cost-saving car-buying choices… well, let’s just say he needs more practice.

Wouldn’t it be nice if peace broke out?

SUPERIOR ROOF TENT omething like a dozen years ago, on an episode of The Apprentice, the contestants had a task about launching a free magazine. Someone in our company saw it and started having ideas – and eventually, those ideas turned into The Landy. The idea was simple. More and more publishers were turning to free distribution as a way of giving advertisers the sort of readership figures they wanted. So let’s do that, we thought. But how do you get a free Land Rover publication into people’s hands? You make it honest and down to earth and you hook up with someone who’s already delivering stuff to Landy owners every day of the week, that’s how. And so our partnership with Britpart was born – a partnership which has now yielded 100 issues and counting. It’s been tough at times, I have to say. When we were new, we had some pretty filthy tricks played against us. Naming names would be uncool; not as uncool as the lies a few people told in a bid to stifle us at birth, but I’m above sinking to that level. Safe to say, we prevailed – and now, by dint of our free distribution model, The Landy is the most widely read publication of its kind. That’s a story which has developed over the years, and so too is the one you may already have read on the preceeding pages. By one of those gruesome ironies, in Issue 1 of The Landy we reported on the anti-vehicle movement’s latest efforts to have green laning banned: and in Issue 100, here we are having to do it again. I appreciate that not every reader or advertiser is into laning. Back then, we even had one distributor return all his copies because we were ‘those idiots who destroy the countryside.’ The actual idiots who destroy the countryside are no friends of ours, of course. Nor indeed are people who think the countryside will be aided by purging it of Land Rovers. That’s why I would urge you to read the article on page four and, if it’s not too late, make your views known via the government’s current consultation. Wouldn’t it be nice if peace had broken out in time for issue 200? Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk

SOME OF US still find it hilarious that Defenders can have windows that go up and down rather than sliding back and forward. Or, rather, sticking and eventually falling out. Or in. If you’re more in tune with the modern breed of Land Rover, you may find it similarly hilarious that they only have electric windows at the front, not the rear. If so, this comprehensive rear window kit from Britpart will calm your troubled soul. Suitable for all Defenders from 2002 onwards, the kit comes with everything you need in order to instal it. It’s typically priced at a little more than £ 00 including the VAT; you can find it by paying a visit to www.britpart.com.

SOME COMPANIES HAVE NAMES that tell you literally nothing about what they do. Accenture is a good example, or Stellantis; both sound like they might be greyhounds running at a shabby dog track in a dodgy part of London, but the former is something expensive to do with politics and the latter imports everything from Jeep to Alfa Romeo to the UK. Then there are companies like Defender Rear Tubs. If you can’t figure out what they do, you’re definitely not trying hard enough. ‘We specialise in making replacements for Defenders whose rear tubs have worn out over the years,’ says the company. ‘This gives our customers a stronger and longer lasting tub and brings new life to old Defenders.’ Based in Worcestershire, Defender Rear Tubs boasts more than 0 years’

experience of top-end engineering and fabrication. ‘When looking at buying replacement panels for our own Land Rovers,’ it says, ‘we found that some panels weren’t available – and those we could source were very costly. So we set about making our own ‘Over time, we have developed the panels to provide a quality body using modern methods and technology while retaining the original features and authenticity.’ Sounds good. The tubs are supplied as a bare, unpainted shell made from 2mm commercial grade aluminium. ‘We use traditional methods for fixing panels together, alongside modern bonding technology,’ says the company. ‘We maintain the authentic spot weld markings which Land Rovers are renowned for.

‘For the main floor, wheelarches and bulkhead we use lock pin and collar aerospace structural fixings and fully sealed pop rivets,’ it continues. ‘For securing side panels and other subcomponents, we use Thatcham Insurance approved twopart panel bond.’ The tubs come pre-drilled with all the necessary holes for bolting up the door components. It’s a different matter at the back, though, where the holes for the rear crossmember are left up to the customer – the reason being that different manufacturers made them with different hole centres. Tubs are currently available for 90s and 110s powered by the 200 00 Tdi, TD and TDCi engines, and a fitment for the 1 0 is in development. Built to order for full compatibility, they come serial numbered and covered by a year’s warranty and can be specified with or without cappings fitted; these can also be supplied loose for you to fit yourself. In addition, Defender Rear Tubs says it can modify standard units if required. Prices are on application, but it’s a customer-focused business so you needn’t fear an immediate assault on your trousers. To find out what this means in pounds and pence, you’ll find their contact details at defenderreartubsltd.com.

DATELINE 2014 Headline stories from Issue 1 of The Landy

A classic… and then some!

Churchill 4x4 has just finished restoring this 1961 Series II. It’s every inch a classic – but it’s far from standard… Words: Robbie Ronson Pictures: Steve Taylor

he world of old Land Rovers is littered with ex-projects. Tinkered with, chopped about, molested, call it what you want – these long-suffering Landies start off

T

as a great idea but all too often wind up in the corner of a field. The Series II in this story never quite sunk that low. But if you’d seen it half a decade ago, you’d never have believed

that one day it would look this good again. This good, and this original. You might be surprised to learn that this 88 has spent more than half its life on coil springs. If you like them original, that’s bad enough. But there’s more, too – the guy who did that to it also replaced its classic front end with one from a Stage 1 V8. That’s not the most startling fact about it, though. How do we know that the home-brewed suspension and front end conversion were both the work of the same owner? Simple: because this Land Rover has only ever had one. It came out of Solihull in 1961, the year when the Series II became the IIA,

and was bought by an engineer who owned it all the way up until last year – when he decided it was time to give up driving. By that stage, he’d also given it a V8 engine and, would you believe, an automatic gearbox. With the passing of time, though, the vehicle itself started to tire. Five or six years ago, with the engine freshly reconditioned, it was taken off the road as the chassis was getting decrepit. Then last year, its owner passed it on to a friend – who happened to be Jonathan Churchill, proprietor of noted restorer Churchill 4x4. That’s why we’re happy to call this a one-owner truck. Jonathan wasn’t the

type to just spruce it up and start driving it: instead, he set to work on giving it a complete chassis-up restoration. That meant taking the vehicle back to the days before it gained its coil-springs and Range Rover running gear. ‘He would only sell it on the condition that his suspension was destroyed,’ explains Jonathan. ‘Although his work was sound, as you’d expect, he didn’t want it being blamed for anything in the future. But that was fine, as I wanted to return it to looking like a standard Series II.’ Which, by and large, is exactly what it now does, of course. Not that it just looks standard, though: it looks very handsome indeed.

Left: You don’t want frills here, ust good solid metal. More modern seats don’t go amiss, though, and the addition of ower steering means the wheel doesn’t ha e to be as enormous. Oh, and what’s that thing where the gearstic should be ? Right: All the body ca ings were re gal anised during the build, and the chassis is a brand new unit from Richards. It’s not ust been built to a high standard, it’s been built to stay that way

To advertise in The Landy, call our team on 01283 553244 w w w. t h e l a n d y. c o . u k We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk The 3. litre carb fed Ro er V was tted by the ’ original owner after he’d already owned the ehicle for more than two decades. It was lightened and balanced as art of a full reconditioning ob about 0,000 miles ago

This is a tale of restification, however, rather than mere restoration. A glance at the Landy wouldn’t necessarily lead you to think it was anything more than a really nice looking 88, but under the surface it is, in Jonathan’s words, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Concours judges, look away now. Beneath its immaculate bronze green bodywork and period deep side sills, this is still a V . And, that rarest of things, it’s a Series II whose transmission tunnel is home to the shifter for a Torqueflite 3-speed auto. People have been fitting V s in Series IIs and IIAs for coming on half a century since Land Rover’s North American importer proved it could be done by building Golden Rod in 1966. So it would be misleading to compare the two – not least because that vehicle, pioneering though it may have been, was also a chromed-up style wagon with fat tyres and a look-at-me interior. This one is near-standard to the eye, but when you look deeper it’s more than just the engine and gearbox that have changed.

That decrepit old chassis, for example, has been replaced by a galvanised unit from Richards Chassis. The bulkhead’s galvanised, too, and the steering column running through it turns a Defender PAS box. Underneath, parabolic leaf springs are controlled by uprated shocks and long-wheelbase brakes are fitted all round. The tyres are taller than original at . 0R1 , but they’re not all fat and lurid, either. It all goes together to make the sort of Series II that you might imagine would have been top of Land Rover’s own range back in the 60s, if suitable technology had been available at the time. More than that, though, it’s been rebuilt not just to enhance Solihull’s original design, but to keep it good and healthy for another lifetime to come. With re-galvanised body cappings to go with the chassis and bulkhead, this truck is a turn-key classic that’s been brought into the modern age and proofed against the future. A turn-key classic? Yes, exactly that – because, as we mentioned earlier, selling Land Rovers is part of what

Jonathan does for a living. Churchill 4x4 restores them to customers’ order, too – so however unique this Series II might be, in terms of the standards it achieves it’s nothing out of the ordinary. All the same, an asking price of £18,000 is pretty breathtaking for any Series II. You can normally rely on a concours example from very early in the production run to make the strongest money, but this one’s value is in something else altogether – its usability. Would it be stretching the point to ask if you could get a better 90 for this money? Maybe, but there’s a lot of outstanding kit here and the workmanship that went into restoring it is top-notch. We’d be tempted to wave the LPG wand at it, since it’s so very non-standard anyway, creating a classic-looking Landy that’ll last longer and cost less to run than any standard 90. It’s tax exempt too, don’t forget, and far easier to work on than a more modern vehicle. Does the price still sound quite so breathtaking with all that in mind? Perhaps, perhaps not. But this is a truck to dream about, and one thing’s for sure. It’s a breathtaking Land Rover, too. is arti le was rst ublis e in so t e an o er as long sin e been sna e u w i is a s a e beause t ese a s or a e i le o t is stan ar soun s li e an absolute steal. s i to ro e t e oint ur ill is urrentl selling a er si ilar eries II at . ou’ll n t e at www. ur ill . o.u .

Aged to perfection Since we’re in the mood to celebrate anniversaries this month, here’s a look back to Arkonik’s 150th Land Rover restoration – a 110 with one of the most beautiful interiors we’ve ever seen Words: Dan Fenn Pictures: Arkonik

ejo means ‘aged’ in Spanish. In much the same way that until recently, ‘Defender’ had come to mean ‘aged’ in English. And here we present a 110 that’s both. Like so many of the coolest restored Defenders, it’s the work of Arkonik. The Somerset company specialises in sourcing all-original left-hand-drive Land Rovers in southern Europe and turning them into better-than-new vehicles for export to North America, and the A ejo was its 1 0th build. The phrase ‘better than new’ is a subjective one, and one which is frequently misused. Rarely, however, will you come across a company whose vehicles are more obviously worthy of such a description. We say this not just because of the vehicles themselves, but because of the process behind them – and, indeed, the development work instilled within it. Throughout each rebuild, Arkonik’s engineering standards and attention to detail are wholly appropriate to the prices their vehicles command. A vehicle like the A ejo, for example, might be expected to sell for ten times more than it did when new. Is this outrageous? It would be easy to assume so, but visit the company’s factory (as so many of its prospective

A

clients do) and you will see a highly skilled, highly motivated workforce hand-building vehicles using the bespoke techniques and assemblies of a boutique car maker. Take its wiring looms, for example. These are not the original items, nor are they bought off-the-shelf from a parts supplier. Arkonik has developed its own contemporary, high-quality assembly, not to mimic the job done by the original but to serve the needs of the modern vehicles it builds. This, and a scrupulously thorough approach to restoring the vehicles’ original chassis, engines and so on, is what allows the company to fulfil bespoke commissions, such as the A ejo, on the soundest of underpinnings. The result is a slow but steady output of Land Rovers whose uniqueness matches the endlessly diverse tastes of its wealthy clients. A good many of these 90s and 110s are finished in dark colours, both inside and out. The A ejo is rather different, looking as bright and breezy as a day at the beach and, on the inside, as vibrant as a Mexican cantina. Fusing English and Mexican influences could be considered a hard trick to pull off, but that’s what this Defender set out to achieve. And

whereas ham, egg and chips, plus a sopapilla on the side, might create an element of discomfort in your stomach, the combination of clean bodywork, a cool paint colour and a dramatic interior works rather wonderfully. The base 110 looks like an English treat, with its Sky Blue body and Chawton White roof. Up top is a Front Runner roof rack, while down below are Fire and Ice ebony side steps. Arkonik also fitted the vehicle with a ‘premium off-road package’. This includes a Warn eon 12-S electric winch, meaning the 110 can pull more than just admiring glances. Then there’s a set of Cooper

Discoverer AT tyres wrapped around white steel modular wheels, giving the vehicle an exemplary combination of doughty, hard-working toughness and dependable A-to-B tractability to go with its jauntily cool image. Then comes the Latino bit. Inside, the craftspeople at Ruskin Design were employed to trim the seats in a combination of Earthy Brown leather and bespoke Mexican blanket, which also appears on the headlining. It may not be very traditional, at least not in the Defender sense, and nor is it what you’d tend to call aged. But the combination of colours produces an absolutely vibrant atmosphere in the cabin. You don’t always climb aboard a 110 and smile instinctively, but this one really does have a happy feeling to it. Up front, the seats are Recaro Cross CS Sportsters. These are heated; not the first requirement on your list in Mexico, possibly, though to be fair the design theme doesn’t actually reflect the final destination in the A ejo’s journey as an Arkonik machine. In the rear, three classic low-back seats are followed by a pair of inwardfacing benches in classic 110 form.

That’s a whole lot of seats, and a whole lot of colourful fabric, and it lights up a cabin in which you’ll also find retro-fit air-conditioning and a magnificently elegant 1 ” Evander wood-rimmed steering wheel. Under the bonnet, a . -litre Rover V engine looks good as new – better, in fact, if a polished stainless steel air filter housing and colour-coded HT leads do it for you. Which they should. This 110 should do it for you, too. The Landy scene is a very varied one, and those within it who prefer honest, hard-working old trucks, showroomspec restorations or hardcore offroaders might imagine their ideal Defender in a very different way. But you can love any or all of those variations and still appreciate that this is a really, really nice one. It’s not an out-and-out off-roader, this, nor is it an out-and-out show pony. But rather than landing face first in no-man’s land, it doesn’t so much straddles the boundaries as bestride the territory stretching out to either side of them. It’s got a definite best-of-bothworlds thing going on – and, of course, it’s añejo to perfection.

THE GREAT BRITISH LAND ROVER SHOW

NEWARK SHOWGROUND

1 MAY 2022

Same great show – at an exciting second venue! he Great British Land Rover Show has been a red-letter event in the calendar for a long time now. So much so that two years ago, we decided to launch a springtime version to go with our famous autumn event. It was all set for April 2020… and the rest, as they say, is history! So we’re absolutely delighted to say that at long last, the Newark edition of the Great British Land Rover Show is all set to take place. Finally, the Land Rover show season has the curtain-raiser it deserves to go with the traditional end-of-year celebration our Stoneleigh event has become. Stoneleigh will continue as ever, of course (this year, it will be on 20 November). But for now, it’s all about our new date and venue. The date is 1 May, so nice and easy to remember. And the venue will need

T

no introduction if you’ve been doing Land Rovers for a while. Newark Showground is a large, modern and very well equipped site with everything you could ask for – including an excellent off-road course where you’ll be able to put your own Land Rover through its paces. As usual, the course will be run by the All Wheel Drive Club, whose experienced marshals will be on hand to help you get the best from your Land Rover. Whether yours is a hardcore Defender or a shiny Range Rover Sport, this is the perfect opportunity to use it for what it was built to do – under the watchful eye of a team who really know what they’re looking at. That’s on top of all the other features you’ve come to expect at the Great British Land Rover Show. As always, there’ll be a wide range of trade stands in the exhibition halls waiting

to tempt you with some of the best products around. And we’ve reserved a section for the clubs that are the lifeblood of the Landy scene – providing the perfect place to meet old friends and be introduced to new ones.

And great news is that once again, Land Rover Experience will be at the show – offering passenger rides in the latest vehicles on its unique Terrapod. But be warned – you might come away wanting to buy one!

Loads to see and do – in a great new setting

Land Rover Experience With intense inclines, dramatic descents, sideways tilts and more, the Land Rover Experience is all about experiencing our vehicles’ signature capability first hand. After all, where’s the fun in flat? Be driven round the Land Rover Experience by one of Land Rover’s specialist instructors. The Dynamic Display Equipment has been designed to showcase the technology and capabilities of all Land Rover products. Each piece of equipment in the portfolio brings its own obstacles and dimensions to your Experience. The pieces at this event will include: Mini Terrapod 2, Articulating Ramps and Side Slope. Extreme articulations will enable the vehicles’ suspension systems to

extend and traction systems to initiate. Hill climbing ability, Hill Start Assist and Gradient Release Control – allowing the gradual release of the brakes for a composed and controlled descent – are just a few of many features that can be seen during the activity. On some obstacles, the vehicle is taken through the unit as well as over it. As the vehicle drives through the centre of the Mini Terrapod 2, it must negotiate its route across a set of rollers. This perfectly demonstrates the ability of the Land Rover range to tackle low grip surfaces and showcases features such as Electronic Traction Control. Ask the Experience’s knowledgeable instructors about technology, features, extras and vehicles past and present. They know their stuff and will be more than happy to help!

Tickets for the Land Rover Experience at the show cost £5 in advance or £7.50 on the day.

Off-Road Course – run by the AWDC Returning for the new Great British Land Rover Show is the opportunity to drive your own vehicle round our fantastic on-site off-road course. The course has several levels of difficulty and is suitable for all levels of driver ability and experience. The course is also suitable for all makes and models from Series Is to New Defenders and everything in between! What’s more, the All Wheel Drive Club will be on hand to offer advice and tips on how to drive off-road – as well as helping you out should you be unfortunate enough to become stuck!

Advance tickets are only £10 (£15 on the day) and can be purchased at the same time as your half-price advance tickets for entry to the Great British Land Rover Show. Advance booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment and to be able to select your preferred start time around the course.

Land Rover Clubs Area – sponsored by Paddock Spares Clubs are the lifeblood of the Land Rover scene. And once again, we are offering clubs free space – allowing you to come and promote your club, attracting new members from the thousands of visitors to the Great British Land Rover Show! The club section of the show, sponsored by Paddock Spares, has limited capacity and all spaces are available on a first come basis. All clubs with a club stand at the show will receive: • Enough space for two vehicles along with 4 exhibitor passes • A listing on the show website • An exclusive link, in conjunction with Paddock Spares, for your club members to buy advance tickets at only £5 each! And it’s not too late for clubs to get involved. Contact Ian Argent on 01283 553242 or email ian.argent@assignment-media.co.uk to register for your club stand – but don’t forget, it’s first come, first served

The original Mud-Terrain is now even better than ever! or almost four decades, BFGoodrich has been the name behind the Mud-Terrain. In 2018 the company launched its latest-generation Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 – the third-generation version of a tyre which has become a ‘Hoover’ brand in the world of off-roading. With the arrival of the KM3, BFG says it has ‘introduced technologies that further improve climbing, traction

F

and toughness in the mud and over rock.’ The company promises a % improvement in traction on soft ground compared to the old KM2, thanks to ‘mud-phobic’ bars on the tyre’s shoulders which aid self-cleaning by ejecting compacted material. They’re aided in this by the tyre’s Terrain-Attack tread pattern, whose large blocks are designed to grip on to hard ground, or bite into softer surfaces, whatever the angle of approach. BFG says the tyre’s compound makes it % more effective than the KM2 over rocks, with a ‘Linear Flex one’ designed to wrap around hard surfaces when running at low pressures. Performance over muddy and rocky surfaces is aided by notches in the tyre’s shoulders, which flow down into a Traction-Armor Sidewall Sculpture whose reinforced structure helps

prevent damage to the most vulnerable part of the carcass. The sidewalls themselves are now an astonishing 2 % tougher than the previous model’s, thanks to BFG’s CoreGard Max technology – as used on its Baja T/A KR3 desert-racing tyres – which helps prevent splitting or puncturing, with increased thickness to protect the ‘critical sidewall failure zone.’ BFGoodrich says the KM ‘was designed to conquer the toughest offroad challenges with extreme sidewall protection, pinch shock resistance and chip-and-tear resistance on gravel.’ But just as importantly, it also offers ‘solid street performance and acceptable on-road noise levels for the drives to and from the trail.’ The Mud-Terrain has always been famous for its road manners, and in KM form it’s a better all-rounder as ever. ‘The KM tyre is designed for extreme toughness and traction and is essential equipment for serious off-road enthusiasts,’ says BFG general manager Harold Phillips. ‘Whether simply driving for off-road fun, or the extreme capability to access outdoor activities, this tyre was made to take drivers anywhere they want to go.’ The KM3 is available in a comprehensive range of no less than 54 different sizes to suit rims from 14” all the way up to 20”. You can find out more about this outstanding off-road tyre by visiting www.bfgoodrich.co.uk.

Ruskin Design: Craftsman-quality interiors that make every Land Rover unique o-one forgets their first experience of a Ruskin interior. The leather is soft and supple, the colours are rich, the detail in the design and stitching is exquisite. A Ruskin interior looks and feels superb – comfortable, supportive, luxurious. And the finished design is unique to you. Over the years, Ruskin has worked on most vehicle types and marques, both classic and modern. But one of them caught the company’s imagination just like it’s caught yours: and it is of course the Land Rover Defender. ‘We’ve designed and fitted interiors for so many Defenders,’ comments Ruskin. ‘The 90, the 110, the 1 0 – we know every little nook, cranny, and quirk of design.’ These days, few Defenders are exactly as they left the factory. That’s when specialist knowledge counts. Ruskin will design an interior to fit the Land Rover Defender that you own– not the factory-finished model that rough use and former owners have long since altered. Every Ruskin Inside® interior is bespoke – a glorious one-off that suits your lifestyle, your personality and your budget. The company is flexible in the way it works, too: the ideas can come from you, or you can instead choose to be guided by the experience and expertise of the best craftspeople in the business…

Terra rma’s Raid style accessories – a whole new life for your Discovery 2! W

ith Defender values still going every upwards, the Discovery 2 now has a lot of appeal. It’s relatively easy to work on, comfortable, capable and affordable. Land Rover directed a lot of its effort into improving the road manners of the

D2 over its predecessor, to such an extent that some of its off-road credentials were compromised. This has provided the development team at Terrafirma with the perfect opportunity to enhance its off-road abilty – with not just the target of matching a well set up Defender, but also to create a brand new look.

A huge amount of work has gone into developing Terrafirma’s new ‘Raid’ style winch bumper, with improved approach angle, good protection and light weight. The tubular construction and infill panels with swaged holes are inspired by rally raid designs that have evolved to be lightweight and super strong.

The matching rear bumper will accept the original tail lights and can incorporate standard towing equipment as well as Terrafirma receiver hitches. There is also provision for a swingaway spare wheel carrier on one side and a swing away jerry can/shovel and high-lift jack carrier on the other.

Both bumpers are fitted with swivel recovery points. To compliment the Raid bumpers, a new set of rock sliders keep obstacles well away from the vehicle’s bodywork. To follow a Defender through the rocks, a brand new set of +5” travel 8-Stage Adjustable Remote Reservoir shocks have been specified which when fitted can enable the D2 to flex with the best. Add front and rear hydraulic bump stops and you can tackle obstacles in full attack mode. For something less extreme, the +3” 4-Stage Adjustable Shocks give four levels of damping from comfort through to sport, while significantly increasing wheel travel. To optimise these set-ups, a full range of associated hardware including watts linkages, caster correction bushes, dislocation cones, anti-roll bar links, RTC steering damper fitting kit, extended turrets and crossmember spacers ensure your D2 will perform correctly both off and on-road. To avoid rubbing, 265/75R16 is the ideal tyre size for a Discovery 2 with these additions. To fit one on the back door, you will need the new Terrafirma spare wheel mount. No longer exclusive to Defender owners, Terrafirma’s wavy CDG brake discs are now available for the D2. Building a better bobtail

Sean Robb didn’t just want to bobtail his Range Rover. He’d seen a lot of rough ones in his time – and so if he was going to do the job, he was going to do it properly

Words: Paul Looe Pictures: Harry Hamm ean Robb’s bobtailed Mark 1 Range Rover four-door doesn’t look a great deal like a write-off. But that, way back in the day, is how it started. Sean’s a mechanical engineer by trade, and what he can’t do to a car pretty much ain’t worth doing. The Range Rover belonged to a friend, who was on his way to Sean’s to get it prepped for its MOT when he pulled out at a junction.

S

Unfortunately, the brand new Mercedes in front of him didn’t pull out. So instead it was pushed out. And mounted. And by the time it finally arrived at Sean’s, the Range Rover doing the mounting was fit only for scrap. Or was it? With a project in mind, Sean took the smashed-up Rangey off his mate’s hands for £200. ‘I wanted to build a bobtail that looked the way I think they should,’ he says. ‘I’d seen a lot of them, and in particular I remem-

ber there was one that looked really nice – until you got to the bobtailed end itself. I thought why would you spend all that time and money and then make it into something that looks like it’s been opened up with a can opener?’ In his line of business, obviously Sean is no stranger to either design or manufacture. So what do you think he did next? ‘I built a nice, big workshop for it to sit in. And there it sat, for the next seven years ’

It’s good not to have to do things in a rush. Finally, one day Sean was at a loose end. So he started sketching out a plan on the Range Rover’s rear windows, and next thing he knew he was cutting metal. Using a ruler and white marker pen, he measured the job at 0 mm. ‘I went all the way round it, drilling out the factory welds and measuring forward from every point. I found that if you take 0 mm out of everything, all

the original lines match up – except to the roof, where the curve at the back is 2” lower than the point 0 mm further forward. So I had to make a section to fill that in and match it up, but I managed to get it so that the two sections of the tailgate open and shut perfectly.’ He also left an extra inch of metal when measuring up, which he folded down to create a seam after making the cuts. ‘It’s quite easy,’ he remarks. ‘Better than trying to weld or pop-rivet it.’

Matching the shorter rear body to the cur e on the roof was the tric iest art though you wouldn’t thin it to loo at the nish he’s achie ed. The nal side windows, whose length was cut right down by the ob, were sha ed out of clear ers e and mounted into a surround made from e eryday rubber seals

The bobbed chassis was finished off with a new crossmember, and in went a small petrol tank; the vehicle had already been LPG converted, so this just needed to contain enough for starting. In went a new floor, inner and outer sills and front inner wings – as well, of course, as the necessary repairs to the crumpled front end Sean’s mate had given it all those years ago. ‘When I started to strip it,’ says Sean, ‘I found that it had previous damage. The front chassis leg on the passenger’s side had filler in it. As I looked into it more and more, I could see signs of the damage here and there.’ That would definitely be a case for a full rebuild, then. The front slam panel (remains of) were replaced with one from an early four-door and, wher-

ever he could do it, Sean welded it up using stainless steel. On the wing tops, the steel and aluminium originals were remade in 2x2” aluminium, and stainless fixings were used throughout the vehicle. Elsewhere, the axles were rebuilt using 2 -spline shafts and ARB diff-locks. They’re still attached using the same geometry, but Sean fabricated new mounts for the rear radius arms – after, he says with what we’re fairly sure is a bit of pride, bending one of them forward by a couple of inches. How do you even do that, we wonder? ‘Coming backwards down a hill at about 0mph and one wheel hitting a concrete block,’ he explains, which might make your bottom twitch a little bit. Left: At rst glance, the chassis mounts are sha ed to de ect imacts. Actually, this is ust strengthening, added after Sean had bent one of them forward by about Right: Engine number three is an ABRO built Army V , modi ed to ta e EFi fuelling and run on LPG

gone on beneath the bonnet. The first V under there lasted all of seven minutes, though Sean managed to get an entire RTV out of it by doing the whole event at 000rpm. ‘That was just to keep the oil light from coming on. And it only takes psi to make it go out…’ The next engine was much longer lived, at a titanic - hours, which was enough for Sean to decide he’d had enough of this. So in went an ABRObuilt Army V , modded with new rocker covers and front pulleys and fitted with the EFi from engine number two. This is what’s in there now, with the aforementioned LPG keeping it as sensible as possible as a road-going vehicle. Which, however off-road focused it might be, it very much is.

Buying an old Landy means never being entirely sure of what you’re going to get – for worse or, sometimes, better… WHEN YOU BUY A USED LAND ROVER, more often than not you get more than just a truck. You get a truck that’s been shaped by someone else – and now it’s for you to decide how you’re going to alter and amend that shape to suit yourself as its new owner. Sometimes, though, you get even more than that. In the case of this early Series III, you’re getting a turn-key classic. But in addition, it’s like you’re also getting an entire turn-key hobby. Surely that’s the case whenever you take on an old Landy? Well, yes and no. But whoever buys this one will also get a canvas tool roll and wheel cover storage bag from Exmoor Trim, a M recovery strops and shackles, a screw jack and wheel brace, a starting handle, a hub nut spanner and a col-

lection of books including Land Rover’s very own Series III Repair Operation Manual, Series III Parts Catalogue and Series IIA, III, 109 V8 Optional Equipment Parts Catalogue. They’ll get the Brooklands workshop manual, too. And that’s not all. The vehicle itself has appeared in print, having been featured in Land Rover Series III by John Carroll, an author who’ll need no introduction if you know your classic Landies. So, what makes it so special? Well, in 201 it was given a complete stripdown and rebuild by Land Rover specialists MPB x . The latter process put it on a new galvanised chassis from Richards Chassis (another name that needs no introduction) and at the same time its bulkhead was refurbished and rust-treated for future longevity. That’s the big job which underpins what is now a Series III with a whole lifetime to look forward to. But during the last half a decade or so, the vehicle has gained an impressive list of improvements – making it more modern without turning it into something it’s not. These include new seats from Exmoor Trim, first in the front then a few years later at the back. The latter have belts, too, and while they were going in the same company supplied one of its black canvas hoods. Nothing radical there, and neither is a set of BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres on tubeless rims. A dash panel with two USB sockets and an LED voltmeter is a bit more out of the ordinary, though, and while it’s easy enough to instal reverse and hazard warning lights you’d be amazed at the number of people who never get round to it. And as for retrimming the lower dash and steering wheel in leather… well that’s much more Range Rover than Land Rover, though in both cases it’s just not very 19 2 at all. Some of the other jobs done to the vehicle, though, are the kind that simply needed to be done. Around the same time as the USB panel, for instance,

the rear tub floor was replaced aluminium sheet which was welded into place and seam-sealed. Since then, the front diff, halfshafts and swivel housings have all been rebuilt. The track rod, fuel lift pump and both propshafts have been renewed, too – as have the brake and clutch master cylinders and clutch slave, both rear springs and both front swivels. But then a couple of years ago came another major job, when the 2.2 -litre petrol engine was craned out and replaced by a freshly reconditioned one. The radiator was renewed at the same time, then last year the gearbox was reconditioned, a replacement aluminium, fuel tank from AlliSport was put in place and the upper dash was renewed. Again, this didn’t all happen in one splurge – the sort that sees a derelict vehicle reborn as a new one with the same identity but little else. That kind of rebuild is a fine thing, but it can easily strip away that character that has built up with the passing of time. Instead, what you’re looking at here is a fine old leafer that’s been brought back to life in a big way as an ongoing project. Much about it may have changed, but it has never lost its soul. That’s why £19,9 0 sounds like decent money to us. You can spend twice as much (and then some) on the sort of just-so restoration that ends up with your truck looking the way it did when it was new – but whoever buys this Series III will be getting a vehicle that’s now very, very sound and ready to celebrate its fiftieth birthday by embarking on the next half-century of its life. And of course, they’ll be getting their own library of parts catalogues too. It’s looking like better and better value all the time. The vehicle is based in Yorkshire and you’ll find it advertised on page .

Fast Bowlers aplenty at Walters Arena Walters Arena plays host as the 2022 Tata Elxsi Bowler Defender Challenge gets underway in dramatic style hirteen identical Defender 90s lined up for the start of the 2022 Tata Elxsi Bowler Defender Challenge at Walters Arena in Wales earlier this month – the beginning of a championship which the specialist Land Rover tuner hopes will see some of its clients on course to compete on the global stage. Driving Bowler’s highly evolved version of the current 90, which has been thoroughly redeveloped for motorsport use, the teams started the weekend with a day of familiarisation with the vehicles – before the action got underway the following morning. The field included a number of complete novices – though alongside them, three-time British Rally and 201 British Rallycross champion Mark Higgins was a clear favourite for the honours. And sure enough, it was the team of Higgins and co-driver Claire Williams that set the early pace, with a blistering start that drew on their vast experience to deliver the fastest lap by a comfortable margin. It wasn’t to last, as they retired during the afternoon – however by now, they had shown the rest of the field what the Bowler Defender is capable of. Thus encouraged, other crews started to go on the attack, putting their Defenders’ robustness to the test as they explored the vehicles’ capabilities and performance. A team of Bowler technicians was on hand to take care of the servicing and repair duties, turning the cars around quickly to keep the competition alive. With Higgins and Williams out of the running, three candidates for the honours emerged – with the crews of Thwaites and Cuming, Beecroft and Parish and Williams and Chambers all vying for the lead as lap times continued to improve throughout the day . With the afternoon drawing on, it was Thwaites who topped the leader

board – though with one lap remaining, Beecroft had only an eight-second gap to close. Pulling out their fastest lap yet, the second-placed crew feverishly chased down the clock – only to be denied victory by a mere two seconds as Thwaites and Cuming kept their cool to hold on. Williams and Chambers scored a well-deserved third to complete a podium that was covered by less than a minute – with all three competing in a rally for the first time. The leaders were joined on the podium by Gareth Bent and Paul Hulston, who received

the Spirit of the Rally award for their commitment and endurance. ‘It’s been an amazing weekend for our entire team of competitors, technicians and support staff,’ said Bowler General Manager Calum McKechnie. ‘The action has been incredible. There have definitely been challenges for some in the competition and I think everyone has learnt a lot from the event – both in terms of rally skills and the capability of the cars. To have three complete novices competing so closely for the win is brilliant and shows just how exciting this championship is set to be.’

inflatables and a traditional dhow plied a coastal route from Durban to the southern border of Somalia as part of a programme to distribute more than a quarter of a million mosquito nets to pregnant women and small children, while also presenting health education shows in remote villages. The expedition convoy was made up of two TD5 Defenders (a 110 wagon and a 130 double-cab) and a Series IIB forward control. And between the three of them, the Land Rovers formed a perfect team. The bonnets of the 110 and 130 provided a perfect platform from which to address crowds of locals eager for education on malaria prevention, while

the IIB was fitted with a loudspeaker that was used on many occasions as a public address system. In addition, having a forward control model helped the team carry as many mosquito nets as possible, as well as providing a very visible self-propelled advert for what the expedition was all about. Ironically, a number of the expedition’s own members succumbed to the disease during the course of their trip – unlike most victims, of course, they all had immediate access to quality care, but nothing could have made the point more effectively. But malaria was just one of the hazards the team faced. Take the crossing of the crocodile-infested Munuwayo River, for example. ‘We joined forces with Colin Fitzgerald’s team from x Mega World in South Africa,’ said Holgate. ‘Using their massive inflatable pontoon, we floated the Landys across the river. Over thirty years ago, dug-outs were lashed together to do this crossing but since then, no vehicle has made it across. The villagers couldn’t believe their eyes ’ For much of the way, the convoy had nothing more positive to follow than goat tracks. ‘This is Land Rover country,’ said Holgate. ‘In the villages, old battered Series IIs and IIIs are still used as taxis. Ours have got a few familiar squeaks and groans. They’ve worked hard on several expeditions and are now overloaded with mozzie nets, so we’re being even more demanding, but they just keep going.’ Not that any expedition would be complete without a mechanical crisis or two – though in this case, the source turned out to be more than a little unusual. ‘One would maybe expect a rogue hippo to go for the inflatable boats. One might expect the fear of unexploded land mines, and the hassle of bridges that were washed away in the rainy season. But who would expect the expedition to be brought to a complete

The African Rainbow Expedition happened in 2005, so the children in this picture will be grown up now. Or will they? A child in Africa dies of malaria e ery 30 seconds that’s why the e edition’s aims were so im ortant standstill by a small, furry rodent? The little blighter had crawled in behind the Landy’s dashboard and merrily eaten its way through a fistful of wiring ’ Days later, with the loom finally repaired, the trio of Land Rovers was back on its life-saving way. The African Rainbow expedition spent a whole year travelling up and down the continent’s east coast, as well as travelling 00 miles up the ambezi to hand out a further 5000 mosquito nets. Finally arriving back in South Africa, the 110, 1 0 and Series IIB were joined

by a convoy more than two dozen other Land Rovers for the very last leg of their journey home. The party atmosphere as the Landies gathered together that night was a fitting climax to an expedition whose highs and lows had been particularly intense Holgate called it ‘an act of solidarity against malaria’ – and, as they reflected on the scale of their undertaking, the whole crew of the expedition could congratulate themselves on a job well done. Many miles travelled… and countless lives saved.

SHOD BY COOPER The Landies in the expedition were fitted with tyres from Cooper Tire’s x range. The company’s South African importer was a leading sponsor of the African Rainbow Expedition; among the others was Land Rover itself, whose technical support was on the end of a sat-phone when one of the Defenders had its wiring loom scoffed by a rat…

Duckworth Motor Group: Generations of Land Rover Knowledge and Experience. James Duckworth was an outstanding engineer. During the Second World War he made gauges for the manufacture of gun barrels. After the war, he designed a machine used to dig channels for radar systems made from the recycled hydraulics of obsolete Lancaster Bombers. He passed on his knowledge and enthusiasm to his son Martin, and together they ran a small but successful engineering business near Lincoln. Martin specialised in Land Rover maintenance and

repair, and it was through his skill and hard work that the business obtained a Land Rover franchise in 1979. Martin’s son Ben, another qualified engineer, is now Managing Director of Duckworth Motor Group, based in Lincolnshire. Real-world Series I

A

s most of us know, buying an original 80” Land-Rover is a game for people with serious bags of cash. Any Series I, indeed, is a precious classic, with even cut-up old triallers being worth the sort of money that would once have

been unthinkable – while at the top of the market, a 1948 example can be worth more than the average house. They’re not all priced in dreamland, though. As you move further through the vehicle’s production run, you come to ” and 88” versions which, while still worth

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

strong money, are at least affordable to non-millionaire enthusiasts. Of course, they’re still rare. However the market has in the last few years seen an influx of good examples brought back from Australia, which hasn’t done any harm to the sort of price an everyday Series I commands. Of course, these can still be restored back to concours. But an honest one with a life story will make a trustworthy com-

£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s

£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models

£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A ea an e n’ e e y ne’ a e E y over regular models means they command a price premium

£2500-£19,000 A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: E e en a a a a y Ea y n Un ed potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition

Insure a Series I with Adrian Flux from £85 panion you’ll love for as long as you own it – and an asset so strong you’ll want to own it forever.

much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop… Pros: A Land Rover like no he , ha ’ ha y an Cons: E e a y a d e, and nd a

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when

They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

These days, it’s very rare to find a 12 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 12 is more of an enthusiast’s

motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: En e ean limitless potential and character Cons: Un e dy S e ha e had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£29,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 00. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.

Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)

The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though

the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve

Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been

The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R 0, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around

£4500-£30,000

When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the

1 0 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

You might even find one that’s not been off-road… Pros: Strength and simplicity. e ha he de n e De ende Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory

The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s

£12,500-£30,000

If the subject of the new Defender comes up in enthusiast circles, try

As a result, you’ll find many more original(ish) 130s than 127s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further. Pros: A proper truck with huge capabilities in every area Cons: I ’ a y d n’ actually need that much size

a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis. Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can

still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well ed en d ed Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles

£45,000-£105,000

to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,

making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value the way an original-shaper does, either. Be in no doubt, though – this is a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, ed ne e Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks he d ne’ a ha

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much

£400-£5500 more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model

it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a

bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: Re a y, e ne en , economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £5000-£85,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000

The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there

are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.

Range Rover L322 (2002-12)

The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-

liable than the P . It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the . , though the . has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and

An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

£2250-£28,000

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to

own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t

Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £27,000-£220,000

This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs

The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)

You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. E e h nn n

£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with WD. Pros: E n y, hand n , n concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on)

Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new

other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price

The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,

Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price

£22,500-£190,000

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £31,500-£95,000 Discovery 1 (1989-1998) because of its particularly handsome exterior. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with

spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get. Pros: Luxury, price, a Land R e ha d e n’ Cons: E e Be e y a a d

Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: e an e, e ne en , glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most

most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

Discovery 5 (2017-on)

The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

£25,600-£80,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery… Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)

The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road

and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area. The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always

£15,000-£35,000 might shudder at the price if you’re buying new, though – but on the used market, there are some tidy looking deals to be had, even on high-spec examples. for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid early last year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of

excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing pre-

mium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models

Turn-key street truck: just £36,995

‘IF YOU THINK IT’S DEAR, IT’S NOT FOR YOU’ says the owner of this 2013 Defender 90. ‘Not matter which you look at, I guarantee it’s missing something mine isn’t plus some.’ Confident, then. By ‘dear,’ he means £36,995, which you could argue is a lot for a six-owner 2.2 Hard-Top on 114,000 miles. But you’d be arguing against a man who says he’s spend £35k on mods since becoming owner number six, and we all know what really matters when it comes to what Defenders are worth. That money has bought a custom cage, BAS remap and turbo, Allisport intercooler, 1.5” suspension dump using Alive springs and Fox shocks, custom

exhaust, grooved and vented discs and far more. There’s a variety of Optimill items, KBX vents, Recaros, Urban interior trim and so on, and the whole cabin has been treated to six rolls of Dodo Mat. The lights have been swapped out for LEDs, the arches have been extended to cover a set of fat all-terrains and the gearbox has gained a Slickshift from Syncro Gearboxes. It would be wrong to say that this little lot is just scratching the surface, because we’ve covered most of the headline items. But there’s a whole lot more besides on what is going to be a turn-key street truck for someone. Someone to whom £36,995 is not dear, of course. It’s near the top of this page.

Britpart performance springs are high quality, versatile and competitively priced - the right choice when replacing the old sagging original springs. Developed by one of the world’s top spring manufacturers these high quality, powder coated yellow springs have been designed with the needs of today’s Land Rover owners in mind. Britpart performance lifted springs have the added benefit of improving your vehicles approach and departure angles which in turn allows you to overcome more obstacles when offroading. As Land Rovers are often working vehicles as well as the family car, uprated springs must offer the ability to carry loads, handle off-road terrain and provide a good ride on road. The progressive springs offer a compliant ride when lightly loaded, but firm up as the load increases.
