SERIES OF EVOLUTION Andy Walker’s relationship with his Land Rover goes back a long way.
Joe Edge likes a special car or two. And when Tonks 4x4 turned his 50th Anniversary 90 into a 300bhp Defender, he became the owner of something very special indeed… Full story: Page 24

JLR facility opens in Brazil

Classic insurance redefined.
Tailor your classic Land Rover insurance policy to suit your needs. Land Rovers covered from 15 years old*

hile Rio de Janeiro is expecting one particularly grand opening ceremony this summer, another took place last month after Jaguar Land Rover opened its new £240m manufacturing facility in Brazil. This is the first time a UK automotive group has launched a production facility in Latin America, and the plant, which is located in Itatiaia, is JLR’s first wholly-owned overseas facility. Clearly, JLR’s intent to become a global brand shows no signs of slowing up. The new plant, which opened alongside the new Education Business Partnership Centre, will produce some of Land Rover’s most popular models, including the Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport, while the expansion of more facilities itself leaves room for further models to be introduced in the future. At the plant inauguration, Wolfgang Stadler, Executive Director, Manufacturing, said: ‘The opening of Jaguar Land Rover’s new world-class facility in Brazil marks the latest exciting milestone in our global expansion.
Classic benefits included*: ‘Land Rover is already Brazil’s market-leader for mid-sized premium SUVs, accounting for more than 30% of all sales in that segment. The Range Rover Evoque and the Land Rover Discovery Sport will now be manufactured for the first time in Latin America, building on their existing popularity with customers in Brazil.’ Not only is JLR bringing more cars to Brazil, but it’s bringing education too. The company’s first overseas Education Business Partnership Centre is going to see up to 12000 local children partaking in their classroom activities, giving them vital skills as they look to follow their own careers through the
engineering and manufacturing-orientated curriculums they will provide. While Jaguar Land Rover is planning for the future, their factory isn’t from the Stone Age either. The factory utilises sustainable features such as rainwater collection and over 1,200 indigenous trees have been planted in the surrounding area to help conserve the local environment. Plus, while the environment is being protected, so is the local economy thanks to JLR’s efforts to source components, including seats, exhausts and powertrain assembly, from the network of suppliers in the Brazilian automotive industry.

his year’s 2016 Charity Land Rover Run, held every year since 2010, took place over the long weekend of 3-5 June. The 39 UK-based entrants assembled at the Battle of Britain Memorial (BOBM) overlooking the white cliffs of Dover on the Friday morning before catching the slow boat over to Calais. This year the support team (Cyril Smeeth, Jeff Mills and Jason Ashcroft) were kept busy from early morning, with Howard Seymour’s Series I needing some TLC and attention, prior to the convoy setting off on their 2016 European adventure. The convoy included a Tickford, two Series I LWB 107 Station Wagons and a 101, a 2B Forward Control, and a couple of Belgium Minervas setting off for Ypres – their homeland. After arriving, the convoy took the scenic cross-country route via Ardres, St Omer, Cassel and Steenvorde. At the Belgium border the convoy expanded to 46 Green Ovals, thanks to our very good friends Yves, Seppe, Mathias, Rolf and Luc joining us. Also joining were Nigel and Hendrik in a rare German military Tempo. After a quick fuel stop, the convoy set off for Ypres, arriving just before 6pm. During the Saturday, all entrants were provided with a road book prepared by Yves and Nele, and their local knowledge resulted in a superb scenic 80-kilometre road trip through the Flanders countryside and local lanes. This included stops en route at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, the WW1 Museum at Zonnebeke, Hill 62, a drive up the Kemmelberg mountain, and a visit and ride on the cable car at Rodeberg.
This amazing road trip was followed by a drinks reception and splendid event dinner at the Kazematten Brasserie in the evening, followed by the first of two auctions planned for the weekend. On Sunday morning, there was a LR line up and display held in the main square in Ypres, and our second auction of the weekend was held. The objective was to raise as much money as possible for this year’s charity and beneficiary - The Dunsfold Collection and Charitable Trust. The auctions proved to be a major success. Just under £3,000 was raised. After adding the auction proceeds to other donations already banked on the event’s Virgin Giving Page, the total raised this year currently stands at £5,135, including gift aid. This smashes the £5,000 target set by the team. It also brings the total raised for charitable causes to just under £42,000, over the past seven years. Following the auction on Sunday, John Smith selected the following Land Rovers to receive event awards,
which were sponsored by our main sponsor this year, Identity E2E. Best Land Rover: A very nice Tickford owned by Peter Stevens. Most Original Land Rover: a unique Sabena Minerva owned by Rik and Mathias Wyffels. It used to be based at Brussels Airport and was used to tow planes. It has only covered 6,000kms since 1952. A very worthy award winner. Best decorated Land Rover: a lovely 101 owned by Alan Potter which looked fantastic in the line up in the main square in Ypres. Bent and Battered ‘but we made it’: a nice Series II owned by Ryan Wright, selected because it had to be towed on to the ferry, blew its rear exhaust silencer apart and needed more TLC on arrival in Calais. Once it had been fixed in Calais, however, Ryan’s Series II went on to behave impeccably – despite sounding like a throaty V8 with its damaged exhaust. Despite the earlier problems, it made it home after a 350-mile round trip without further issue. As did the other 45 Land Rovers in our 2016 convoy.

Doubling Up!
O
kay, so the month of July is upon us and strictly speaking we’re supposed to be enjoying a spot of summer – but it’s hardly been a vintage season to remember so far, has it? The good news, though, is that if the weather is getting you into the wintery mindset for the wrong reasons, then we’ve got something that should leave you wanting the winter to come for the right reasons. The Great British Land Rover Show (GBLRS) returns on Sunday 27 November for another one-day fanfare of Land Rover bliss. But this time the organisers are expanding the show and the GBLRS will be taking over not one but two halls at the fabulous Stoneleigh Park venue, based in Warwickshire.
Double the halls, double the Land Rovers, double the spectacle for Land Rover lovers like you and me. And if the weather turns out to be as rubbish as the great British summer - no worries because we’ll have a roof to put over your head! While the organisers are busy preparing more features to get visitors involved at the show and working on how to make this the season finale that you all deserve, it’s time to tell you that headline sponsor, Bearmach, are also returning to the GBLRS. Yes, that huge Land Rover parts and accessories company that you’ve all been waiting to purchase items from will be there ready to help you build, maintain and customise your Land Rover, no matter what your require-
ments. They will be bringing you hotoff-the-press products to give you food for thought over the Christmas period. Dedicated Bearmach staff, who love Landies almost as much as you, will be on-hand to mingle. Going from full-size to fun-size, Radshape RC will be back in the driving seat at the GBLRS in November, as they bring you the most hardcore and exciting scaled RC vehicles, which you can test-drive yourself on the day. Small they may be, but only

the most-skilled pair of hands can conquer these babies. The RC kings are based in Minworth, Birmingham, and specialise in cars and trucks of the miniature variety – as well as planes, helicopters, drones and boats. Basically, anything they can think of that has already been done on a bigger scale. The crew will be down at Stoneleigh for the show, bringing with them their man-made courses so all you lovely visitors, for just £3, can show your mates, offspring or anyone who’s willing to watch, just how it’s done when it comes to hand-eye co-ordination. There will be loads more features and details announced about this November’s instalment of the Great British Land Rover Show as the weeks count down to the Land Rover season

Can I have a word...
We’re all aware of the increasing strain upon off-roaders to find places where we can express our love of surfaces not rolled-out to be as smooth as silk. Many of our beloved byways have been taken from us, and with it, a right to enjoy the countryside by a method of transportation that is at home like no other. Thankfully, we have playsites we can roam and the government has yet to close all of our green lanes. But there is also one place well worth a visit. Cannock Chase, a thriving woodland on the outskirts of Birmingham, is full of natural beauty – which isn’t surprising considering its AONB status. Every month or so there’s a 4x4 in the Forest staged within the Chase’s trees (P36). It’s essentially a green lane-style adventure, but through areas you wouldn’t usually be able to access. It’s run by the Forestry Commission and you pay £50 for the event. A forester guides you round and even delivers educational information about your surroundings. It’s brilliant. It’s possibly the future of offroading in this country. Think about it. You pay a fee for your place, which goes towards the maintenance and upkeep of these beautiful areas. You see places you never would have before, and all behind the wheel of your Land Rover. For more solutions on how to save the world, drop me an email with your woes... Charity Land Rover Convoy
H
ere’s an event which will be fun to be on and which is raising money for some seriously good causes. The Charity Land Rover Convoy will set off from Lands End on 28 July, and is aiming to reach John O’Groats on 31 July. Yes, that’s a convoy from one end of the United Kingdom to the other, composed entirely of Land Rovers! That’s 827 miles, and you’re welcome if you’re in a Land Rover vehicle, whether it’s a Freelander, Range Rover or Series I. There will be free camping on the night of the 27th for those who want to turn up the night before in
Cornwall so as to be fresh for the start. There will be camping stops en route in South Gloucestershire, East Ayrshire, Inverness and then John O’Groats. Every camp stop is free, and there will be some sort of hot food and entertainment at every stop. This is a charity event with the income going to the RNLI, UK Homes4Heroes and the Midlands Air Ambulance. It’s only £20 entry fee per vehicle, so to get on this unique event you should act pretty soon. There’s a lot of new information and discussion happening on the event’s Facebook page, so it might be
Land Rover Raises Everyone Up

ine people had always dreamed of getting to the top of the Malvern Hills, but they never could. Being less abled, it meant the 1395ft summit, the Worcestershire Beacon, was literally beyond them. But then Land Rover teamed up with the Malvern Rotary Club to make those people’s dream come true. Naturally, the experts from the Land Rover Experience Eastnor were drafted in, along with some Discovery vehicles – in part because the grounds of Eastnor Estate are on the eastern end of the hill range. With the Discoverys and their expert drivers, the nine people took a challenging but comfortable 40-minute ride up the hills.
And then they were at the top, and in so doing the Disco also became the first vehicle to reach the summit. It was all part of Land Rover’s Global CSR Programme, doing things for social good. But to the people who were standing at the top of the Malvern Hills it was much more than that. Jannah Armstrong wouldn’t have been able to make the ascent because of her wheelchair. As she relished the view, her mother Liz spoke of what it all meant. ‘Jannah is realising her dreams one by one and today, with the help of Land Rover, she’s reaching the top of the Malvern Hills; a dream she’s had since childhood. When teams get together it’s amazing what can be achieved.’
worth registering for that and seeing what people are saying, although they mostly seem to be saying ‘Look, I’ve got my ticket!’ For the event website, and to get a chance to be on this event, go to www. landroverconvoy2016.com. To get your ticket click here: www. ticketsource.co.uk/landroverconvoy The organisers are also pointing out that it’s not obligatory to start from Lands End. You could join the convoy at any of the overnight stops and carry on with it from there. But most people are going the full distance. And why wouldn’t you?

aguar Land Rover has just been given the go ahead for a huge expansion of its site near Coventry. The £250m plan focuses on the creation of a major research and development centre which will form part of the expanding site at Whitley South. Situated between the A45 and Coventry Airport, the JLR centre will form part of a 60-acre development next to their Whitley site. The plans show that JLR is expanding its commitment to be a major global player and also a major local employer. Council and government grants have been supportive of JLR, who started a £300m expansion plan last year. The new research and development centre could start being built by the end of this year. The decision to build on the site, which is green belt land, is viewed as controversial by some, but the decision by the Secretary of State, Greg Clark, shows that the government is keen to see companies like JLR expand and bring employment not only to employees of JLR but of all the many subsidiary companies in the region that supply it with specialist parts and skills.

There’s a new kid on the block
T
here’s a new 4x4 show coming to the south of England this summer. Organised in association with Total Off Road magazine, the South Coast 4x4 Show will take place on 6-7 August at the army’s Bovington Camp in Dorset. This is where Britain’s tank drivers of the future learn their trade – and the training area will be open on both days for pay-and-play fun. There’ll also be camping for those wanting to make a weekend of it – as well as trade stands catering for every kind of 4x4 and off-road vehicle. ‘All makes of 4x4, UTV, ATV, pick-up and overlanding vehicle are welcome,’ say the organisers – who happen to be XS4x4, the company behind an ever-growing range of premium brands in the UK. Being a wide-open military site, the off-roading will be scratch-free – though site regs mean only road-legal vehicles will be allowed to participate. Further attractions will include overlanding talks, test drives in new 4x4s and thrill rides in Ultra4 race buggies. The latter of which will also raise funds for the show’s nominated charities, Race2Recovery and Wessex 4x4 Response. In keeping with a show with an overland theme, the camping available on-site will be ‘a true out in the woods experience’. But if you and yours need a few more amenities, there’s also a commercial campsite nearby with the usual toilet and shower blocks. As well as trade stands, the event offers club stands at affordable prices. And talking of prices, tickets cost £8 per adult, or £15 for the weekend, with play and play priced from £40. Want to know more? We’ll be there ourselves, and we’ll be keeping you abreast of developments in Total Off Road as the date of the show draws close. In the meantime, a visit to www. southcoast4x4.show will tell you everything you need to know about what it’s going to be like.

hen you’re deep in the depths, a cheerful bright light is just what you need to improve your day. So it is that Ring has launched two new families of lamps for when you’re deep in inspection mode, if not the inspection pit. All the lamps feature rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and are therefore cordless, which makes the working environment safer. The MAGFlex range is also hands-free so you can fix them wherever you need the light, which gives you two hands for rolling a fag or opening a bottle of beer. A rachet system, magnet and integral hooks mean you have a lot of options as to how and where to attach the lights. The Ergo range features three lamps that are lightweight. The name implies they are also, therefore, ergonomic. With the light coming from a COB LED, the light is both wider and three times brighter than a normal LED. They too have a magnet and also a belt clip so you will keep it with you and not wander off and lose it. One of the lamps in the range is the Robust, which has, they say, an IK rating of 10. Apparently this means it is ‘virtually indestructible’, which is the sort of challenge any Land Rover owner ought to be able to rise to. Ring certainly is a big name in this market, and was one of the first to bring in LED tech for inspection lamps, so you can light up your darkness with confidence.
Classic Vehicle, Classic Tools
H
ere’s a nifty idea. Back in the 1970s, Draper Tools released a highly contemporary set of tools in a bright orange metal case. It was hugely popular and Draper report some people are still using their original sets. So Draper thought it would be a ripping wheeze to relaunch the tool set, only now it’s a classic set to best fettle your classic Land Rover. The Retro Edition is a 25-piece socket set featuring both mm and AF. You get all the things you’d expect like spark plug sockets, a whole bunch of sockets in millimetres and AF as well as extension bars, a universal joint and a fair bit more. What’s more, it comes in a bright orange sturdy case just like the original. This looks like the sort of thing you should have lying around when fettling your Green Oval, but Draper
aren’t stopping there. They are working on two more retro-inspired socket sets. To get the full story head to www.
drapertools.com, but we reckon you should put on your old purple loon pants first.

So you have some Lazer Lamps and you have a mounting bar. Now you need to get clamped. A new range of tube clamps from Lazer Lamps allows you to stylishly and ruggedly connect lamps to mounting bars or other rigs. These are a new addition to the range. The press release says they’re ‘the latest addiction to their range’ but frankly we think that’s a bit of overclaim. Whatever, the clamps come in pairs in three diameters: 42, 60 and 76mm. These allow lights in the Lazer High Performance Lighting range to quickly clamp on to horizontal bars. The design makes them easy to grapple on to a range of tubes and bars. Since the clamps are made of stainless steel they’ll be tough enough to deal with mud and grit and will laugh in corrosion’s face. The clamps add a touch of style too, with the biggest clamp finished in hand-polished matt black, while the other two come with an electro-polished matt look with the Lazer logo etched into the clamp. Prices are from £30 to £34 including VAT, so have a gander at their website page: http://www.lazerlamps.com/home/mounting-kits/ tube-clamp

Jack in a box If you’ve got a Hi-Lift jack, then you know you’re unlikely to face anything you can’t face down. But while you can attach the jack itself to the jack bar, what about all the other stuff you need? Hi-Lift have come up with a rather neat idea, a Hi-Lift Gear Box. This isn’t a way to raise your overall gearing, but it is a way to store all those other things you might need with the jack, like recovery straps,
gloves and a box of plasters. Rather neatly, the box, which is 38x10cms, fits directly to the jack bar so it’s safe to leave it there when you’re out and about. It’s fully waterproof, made of metal-reinforced plastic and retails for £70.00. If you feel you need even more gear on your rig, you can load up on goodies by checking out their website at www.arbil.co.uk/4x4

On the Grille We’ve all seen those sneaky unmarked Police cars which have their blue lights hidden behind the front grille. Let’s not discuss the way that many of us have seen them, like immediately behind in the mirror. The new ProSpeed spotlight mounts seem to be as discreet as that, with just the lamps themselves showing in front of the grille. The pair of mounting brackets are designed for the Discovery 3 and 4. They’re basically invisible and are easy to mount, with what ProSpeed call ‘very little modification’ on the Discovery 4 and ‘little’ on the 3. To these you can attach a variety of LED Lazer Lamps, which will be the only part you see sticking beyond the grille. Classy, discreet, and very effective, these mounts are £94 (inc VAT) the pair. To find them (because you won’t spot them when they’re fitted) go to http://prospeed-group. co.uk/product/discovery-34-frontspotlight-mounts/
A Stirring Rendition Syncro Gearboxes have developed a mechanism to improve the way your Defender gearbox feels when you change gear. The clue’s in the name: Series Slickshift. It is intended only for Series Land Rovers. We all know that changing gear in a Land Rover can more closely resemble stirring porridge, but the mechanism from Syncro Gearboxes should make this feel more like quite firm treacle. If you don’t like treacle we’ll work on another metaphor, but you get the general picture. The company says the design reduces sloppiness (in the gearshift, it can’t do much with the owner). It also reduces gearlever travel and gives a smoother shift. But you’d expect the company to say that. We’re also aware that you can game any reviews on websites, but looking at their reviews does show a 100% happiness rate for the people who have fitted this Slickshift.
The mechanism comes as a kit and is pretty easy to fit, although if you look on the website (address below) you can view a helpful tutorial if you’re unsure. The kit costs £150 and may be

a relatively easy way to make your gearbox feel a whole lot better, newer and all that good stuff. Stirred by this? Visit www.onlinegearboxparts. com/product/series-slickshift to find out more.

He’s Out Back With the price of property what it is, and many people finding themselves unable to move house or even leave
home, why not simply move into the rear of your Defender flat-bed? An aluminium canopy from Bush
Tech will transform that drab and utilitarian space into a, well, not exactly a pied a terre, but perhaps a pied a Defender. The canopies are made of aluminium with powder-coated frames and custom roof rails. All hinges are waterproof and seamless, and any rear door has 4mm toughened glass. It all looks pretty rugged and impervious to the elements, yet pretty stylish too. But why stop there? The list of accessories includes insulation, drop-down shelf, table, a cupboard with carpet, and an ammo box for that authentic atmosphere. Honestly, there are flats that aren’t as well equipped as this. Carpet in the cupboard? Luxury. Before you move in you should check out their website for more ideas: www.expedition-equipment.com

Be genuine Land Rover If you’re doing the servicing on your Land Rover yourself, and let’s face it, a lot of us do, then you’ll need genuine Land Rover service parts. The fact that you’re not a genuine Land Rover service technician is something that can’t be helped, but at least you can use the genuine parts. Rimmer Bros is now stocking the genuine articles (although they will also supply you with pattern parts if you prefer). The service kits they offer allow you to do a basic service and to have all the replacement parts you need, like spark plugs, points, filters and so on. They can also supply the parts needed for a major service, but these basic service kits make them a useful one-stop shop. They’ve got kits for pretty much most engines, including the 2.5-litre petrol, 2.5-litre diesel, 200 TDI, 300 TDI, TD5 and many others including Bearmach versions. Prices range from about £14 to £48 depending on model and service, so to get the full low-down go to www.rimmerbros. co.uk

It can be a dilemma. It’s hot so you want the windows open, particularly passengers in the back who are in need of ventilation. Usually in Britain that’s a simple job, you just open the window and let the air in. But in some places that can present a security risk. Places like Islington, where some hipster might lurch up and spill his skinny frappuccuino on you through the window. It’s at times like these that you want a bit more security while still getting some air, and it’s here where the Rear Window Security Screens from Series Defender Outfitters come in. They’re made of steel and are black powdercoated, so they’re plenty strong should you find yourself in a situation even worse than Islington. To fit is simplicity itself. They slot into the window track, so you just slide the window open, insert the screens and then slide the window shut till it clicks locked, at which point the screens are locked into place. Neat, simple, practical. They’ll fit any Land Rover Defender Station Wagon pre-2002. To have a closer look go to https:// www.seriesdefender.com/exterior/ window-screens.html

The life and tim an old landy
If you’ve got an old Series Land Rover that has been loitering in your life for more years than you can remember, it might be worth sitting down sometime and trying to recall exactly what this loyal machine has been through. More often than not, you’ll give yourself a surprise
T
here are so many old Land Rovers out there – and that is a good thing. We frequently cluck at our own brilliance as enthusiasts, we who can claim part responsibility for Land Rover having the highest percentage of vehicles of any marque still on the road today. It’s a fabulous thing, particularly these days when the restoration of such vehicles has really gotten into its stride. Not only do we see the archaic hacks still being thrown around farmyards and the rural back roads, but we see pristine pearls that have been lavished with galvanised innards that make onlookers think they’ve fallen through a TARDIS and back to 1964. What a great time to be alive, eh! Some of us out there may have only had a Series Land Rover for a few years, which is an amazing feat in itself. I mean, who has an Austin Allegro these days? And how many Pritt Sticks must they have inhaled to have come to the firm conclusion that this is a good thing? I digress. See, some of us out there have had a Series Landy in the family for decades and, without knowing it, the machine has slowly burrowed deeper under our skin with every passing year. For one enthusiast his Series II has managed to entwine its own history with his, and
consequently, it’s now got a permanent place in his future. This is the story behind one 1960 Series II named WBX 742 and its long-serving owner, Andy Walker. The life of WBX, as it is nicknamed, began before Andy’s when on 18 July 1960 it emerged from the Solihull production line as a sexy Soft Top dressed in Bronze Green. It was labelled with the chassis number 146001981 and at its heart lay a 2.0-litre diesel engine, the first diesel-powered motor Land Rover made. Having been despatched in early August to W. Edwards and Son Ltd of Towy Garage, the lil’ Landy was registered on 1 September and found its first home in Bethlehem. No, Jesus was not the owner, but a Mr William Davies of Bethlehem, Llandeilo was. WBX’s early life is a mystery beyond those few facts and the vehicle clearly went through a number of owners on its way to being owned by Andy, although, one of them happened to be a friend. ‘Its life with us started when a friend of ours purchased WBX in 1984 from a man in Iver, Buckinghamshire,’ says Andy on reflection. ‘The previous owner had used WBX for towing broken down coaches and towing a horse trailer.’ A true Land Rover upbringing
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott then in many respects and the same can be said for Andy in truth. Andy continues, ‘My father had Land Rovers from the early 1970s onwards and I really liked riding on them from a young age,’ says Andy. ‘He also had one of the first Range Rovers in 1972. My first memory of WBX, though, is being picked up after school in 1984 with its soft top rolled up and sitting in the back on those seats. ‘While owned by my friend, the Land Rover had a truck cab fitted, a gearbox rebuild, and a new rear crossmember welded on before it was all repainted. I purchased WBX on 1 August 1987 and used it for my driving test in November that year.’ Having watched over Andy through puberty and then granted him his biggest rite of passage (his driving licence)
Above: Andy’s Series II has played a number of different tunes over the years, from its original 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel motor to the Rover V8 and now the current bay holder, the 2.5 TD (19J) engine. Not always perfect, but always fun to work on

when the smell of engine oil and juddering diesels came calling, the Series II settled down for a life with Andy as its driver – and project leader. While keeping beloved WBX going was all part of the fun, a youthful Andy was also keen to experiment. Unfortunately for the Land Rover, IT would be his subject. ‘After meeting Ian Ashcroft – better known for Ashcroft Transmissions - at an Anglian Rover Owners Club trial and seeing his 88” Series II with a Rover V8 and auto ‘box fitted, I decided to purchase one of his automatic conversion kits for the Series,’ explains Andy. ‘I purchased a Rover V8 from a P6 and rebuilt it, then fitted the auto ‘box kit and engine. The conversion worked well for some years, but the gearbox didn’t enjoy heavy towing and after
replacing it twice I decided it was time for change.’ Not only was this the vehicle to get Andy into off-roading, but it got him into tinkering with different setups. Today, Andy runs Alex Engineering along with his brother Dave and there is no need for a second guess what they spend their time working on most. But with WBX, you’d be right in thinking that it became a bit of a test mule for Andy – not because he’s been making vehicles of his own or anything, but the Landy has certainly had to keep up with his swiftly-changing preferences. During all Dr Walker’s various transplants, our surgeon was also able to find a spare moment to fit a full hard top incorporating fixed windows, although the sides were later substituted for station wagon panels and
the rear door was replaced by a top and bottom tailgate. An electric winch found its way onto the front and WBX received another rear crossmember. Had Andy finally found his perfect configuration then? Errrr no. ‘I had the opportunity to have a LT77 ‘box from a four-cylinder 110, with a 1.22 Discovery transfer box. So I set about removing the auto ‘box, and using a conversion ring I fitted the LT77 and high-ratio transfer box,’ Andy tells me while leaning on WBX’s nearside wing. ‘At the same time I fitted Range Rover 3.54 diffs. However, quite soon after finishing the conversion I discovered that the standard Series II front driveshafts gave an odd feeling when manoeuvring on full lock. The answer Continued overleaf

Above: Inside, you’ll see the gaiters and gearsticks from a much newer machine, which hints to the LT77 transmission underneath and also the 3.54:1 Range Rover diffs. There’s a 1.22:1 Discovery transfer box and a CV type halfshafts adopted from a 109 Stage One V8. It is certainly not the most original Series Land Rover – but then that’s not the point. This Series II is Andy’s, and it’s Andy’s experimenting that has made this vehicle what it is was to fit the CV type from the 109 Stage One V8.’ Andy did manage to fit the rear axle from a long wheelbase Stage One V8 sometime later and he eventually waved goodbye to the thirsty Rover V8 and slid a 2.5 TD in its place. Plus, today it’s now back in soft top form with a fresh canvas hood. This Land Rover has put up with a lot over the years, not just in terms of trialling various setups, but it’s been treated to a full Land Rover life, too, just like it had before it came to know Andy.
‘I used it for commuting for a few years and it has towed our trial and race vehicles to different events. It’s even been driven to the Somme in France to support the lorry moving a narrow gauge railway locomotive there from North Wales!’ says Andy. ‘We took the Land Rover to the then Hillingdon show in June 1985, which was a large county show in Uxbridge. My brother then owned an AEC Matador 4x4 timber truck with a large winch and ground anchors fitted.
‘We were asked to tow horse boxes onto the very wet site, and then tow them off again at the end of the day. I remember driving WBX round the site, pulling cars and vans out to the road in the site. My cousin who was then only ten would jump out and hook the rope on to the stranded vehicle, then after we had successfully recovered the stricken vehicle he would flick the rope off and collect our tip.’ Lots of memories and lots of different guises over the years, that’s what WBX has given Andy. What other
vehicle would be so compliant? He’s been through so many different configurations that it probably feels like he’s owned more than one 1960 Land Rover. Yet here it is today, looking proud at the age of 56 and still looking towards its next chapter in life. Besides being a nice warm place for the dog to grab forty winks, Andy hopes to keep her dry and not to let her corrode any more than she has over the last 30 years. ‘Maybe I’ll give her a repaint too. And I also fancy fitting a proper hy-
draulic winch if I can find a nice one,’ Andy says. So, Andy, the best 4x4 by far? ‘Well, as far as how this Land Rover ranks alongside other ones I have owned, it is by far the best one, mainly because I’ve had it so long and know it inside out.’ Series Land Rovers are incredible in each individual way, whether it is a stunningly beautiful resto model or a tired work hack that’s still going strong today. But often there is just no substitute for the lil’ Landy that has been with you through it all.

The Whole Hog
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
W
hen we find time in our busy everyday lives to do something for ourselves, one thing we all enjoy is being able to spend a few hours with our Land Rovers. It may not always be a case of driving it down your favourite green lane, or preparing it for a getaway to Morocco in order to give you and your Landy a dustier complexion, but even a few hours tinkering can feel like therapy. Sometimes though, even when we keep telling ourselves we’ll get round
We often need to work on our Land Rovers to keep them looking good for the future. But when Joe Edge dropped off his special 90 at Tonks 4x4, it wasn’t long before he was requesting the whole shebang
to that next job that needs doing on the Landy, there comes a point when we bite the bullet and admit that it’s probably never going to get done without the help of the professionals. Joe Edge can relate to this, as he found himself in a similar predicament with his rather exclusive and special Defender. He is the proud owner of one of the 50th Anniversary Defender V8, only this one has been through a very strict regime and is now a true one-off. It started, as Joe tells me, when he was looking to get a galvanised chassis under his Defender. ‘I took my Defender to Brian Tonks at Tonks 4x4 and originally just wanted the chassis change,’ says Joe looking back. ‘I wanted a galvanised one as I’ll keep this forever and I had planned on doing the tinkering myself. But with work and other commitments I knew
Clubs
it was a nice idea that was never going to happen! ‘Anyway, while it was in for the chassis swap, Brian asked me whether I wanted new discs and shockers fitting – something that would be a lot easier to fit while the vehicle was in bits. But having looked on his website at the rebuilds he’d done previously and the quality of stuff he’d done – and knowing I was never going to have the time – I asked him to give me a price on a full nut and bolt rebuild and that was that.’ So like wandering into a restaurant for a light lunch and walking out after three courses, only the restaurant has a Michelin star, Joe was never going to leave feeling hungry for more. But while we let Joe bask in the glory of his machine, it’s certainly worth speaking to the ‘chef ’ who managed to put this whole banquet together.

Above: Art in its most glorious form. You’re looking at where a regular 4.0-litre V8 engine used to idle, but now a stage three 4.6 V8 from RPI Engineering shunts 300bhp to the Defender’s four wheels. Mmm… throaty! ‘In terms of what work was carried out,’ explains Brian Tonks, ‘we’re talking absolutely everything, the whole hog. The axles were stripped and acid dipped, the galvanised chassis was painted, every bracket was replaced; calipers, brake lines – literally every component that could be galvanised was galvanised.’ ‘Thorough’ is Brian’s middle name, and ‘happy’ is Joe’s! In fact, because the only thing that remained untouched on Joe’s Defender was the gearbox and transfer box, its owner feels like he’s been presented with a whole new 90 – only this one is built for life.
However, while many of the components are new or galvanised, Joe was insistent on keeping things as original as possible. Only he did request a few sneaky mod-cons to be included. Firstly, inside what is already an exclusive vehicle, this 50th Anniversary 90 has been given an upgraded Td5 centre dashboard which enabled Brian to fit the switchgear Joe wanted for electric windows and heated seats. ‘It’s really neatened up the buttons in there and I went for it because I was doing it for myself, as I’m the one who is going to drive it and own it for the next x-amount of years,’ Joe explains.
Some creature comforts may be cute, but that’s nothing compared to this vehicle’s performance. The brakes use discs all round, but these are vented components. The suspension has been lowered – meaning it’s set up for speed on the road, not flexibility on rough terrain. There’s a quick-rack steering box and a full stainless steel exhaust system. At this point you’re probably asking why. Especially when the engine is just that old 4.0-litre V8 unit they used in the NAS spec Defenders. Continued overleaf
Below: It looks rejuvenated under the 90 and that’s because it has been. Yes, Joe has a galvanised chassis but just about everything else has been freshened up and galvanised where possible, too. Axles have been acid-dipped, brakes overhauled with discs allround and the polybushed suspension has been lowered to suit the Defender’s new sporting credentials out on the road

Aha! That’s where you’d be mistaken, my friend. That original auto ‘box may have avoided the hands of Brian, but the engine he had to place in the Defender’s bay is not a stock creation. Beneath the bonnet now lies a 4.6-litre V8 from RPI. It’s a stage three build now outputting a healthy 300bhp, which I’m sure has now put the pieces of the puzzle together for you. I’m never been referred to as the Hulk before, but as I stepped into Joe’s 90 I was about as green as I’d ever been. Not because of anger, but because of how much I wanted to be able to place the keys on my own rack at home. It’s a beautiful Land Rover, a spectacular vehicle. ‘I’ve grown up with Land Rovers all my life,’ Joe says to me as we roll on by with a naughty exhaust note in our wake. ‘These, though, were £27K when they were new and I’ve hankered after one ever since it came out in ’98. ‘I’d had a few different Defenders, but then these got down to the right sort of money; about £10,000. The plan was to buy one and rebuild one, but if I stripped it down myself in the garage, it’d just stay there. Brian’s work on the other hand is meticulous.’ Joe’s affection for speed can be linked back to some of his earlier days with the Northern Off-Road Club with whom he used to race. And now he has a Defender that is going to stand the test of time, will warm his heart every time he opens up the throat on that RPI masterpiece and will bring pleasure to all who are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Atlantis Blue machine. Above and left: This was already no ordinary 90, but now a Td5 dash helps add some welcome creature comforts

It’s a very rare Land Rover, but it’s not the only one under Joe’s lock and key. Having salivated at the release of the Limited Edition Autobiography 90 last year, Joe felt this was something he just had to own. ‘I think the 50th Anniversary and the Autobiography Defenders are the best that Land Rover have ever made,’ states Joe. ‘You’ve got from late 1998 to present day – and they are completely different vehicles too. These were never built to be tucked away; they were built to be used. So that’s what I’ll do. ‘When Brian finished the build, though, it did look showroom condition, as if I had bought it in 1998 after all.’ Before Joe entered Brian’s workshop, the latter had never carried out a rebuild on a 50th Anniversary Defender before. Yet now, after Joe was so pleased with the outcome of his Land Rover, Joe’s sent his dad to Brian to get his 50th 90 done, too. ‘It won’t be quite to the same spec,’ says Brian. ‘But it will still be a comprehensive rebuild nonetheless.’ With Brian you get what you pay for. And for Joe that means he can ride around in the best damn 50th Anniversary Defender there is, safe in the knowledge that it’ll still be playing his favourite harmonies many, many years from now.

The Smart Option
Words and Pictures: Mike Trott
Restoring Range Rover Classics is a hot trend that is only getting more popular by the day. Frequently we see concourse examples flooding the market with prices often well in excess of £50,000. But while some purists are only interested in the older and more sought-after twodoor variants, is it possible that there is more sense in renovating an old four-door?
E
veryone loves a Range Rover. How could you not? These Green Oval badge wearers are like the aristocrats of the Land Rover world and they manage to display the same set of skills as their agricultural counterparts, yet remain completely unflustered on the surface; carefully transporting Dame Tittiebotham and her glass of Dom Perignon over a tricky boulder or two. The thing is, though, a lot of the old Range Rover Classics are now a bit, well, classic. Many of these luxury machines have now succumbed to terrible deaths at the clutches of a crusher, and even if they have escaped pneumatic death, the survivors aren’t always looking too clever. Thankfully, there is a real obsession with Range Rover restorations at the
moment, which is a laudable trend as it is a shame to see these great vehicles – or any Land Rover for that matter – rot into pieces. Strong money is being thrown about for very early 1970s examples and it is the two-door Classic that wins the hearts of the purists and most old-fashioned of enthusiasts. But while a restored two-door is incredibly pretty and is a reminder of the model’s earliest days, when you see £50,000 or more for an asking price, you start to wonder whether there is a more viable alternative. If you ever bump into Felix Welch and his late four-door Classic, he’ll tell you that there most certainly is. His luxury Green Oval is a fully restored Range Rover Vogue SE, the top spec model of all the regular wheelbase
derivatives. Felix was very precise when it came to deciding about which Range Rover he’d like in his life. For him, this late Vogue SE with the soft dash and Niagara Grey paint scheme held the winning ticket. ‘I bought this in 2013 as a car to keep forever as I had always wanted one,’ says Felix as we ride out through the Worcestershire countryside. ‘For me, I think it’s the best colour combination with the dark grey metallic on the wheels and body. And the full grey leather interior is in fantastic condition.’ Nevertheless, while Felix’s Range Rover can stop sheep in their tracks as we waft by their field, the grass chewers may not have been so impressed a few years ago. ‘I’ve spent a huge amount of time and money completely restoring it to

get it to this condition,’ claims Felix as another sheep makes its approval known while getting a breeze of elegance in its face. ‘I have seen many original and restored cars over the years and when it came to my Range Rover, I was determined to make mine as good as it could be - and needed a good base car as a result.’ Felix’s good base car came to him three years ago when he bought the Range Rover from a guy who had owned it for just six months. He was an enthusiast, according to Felix, who seemed to lack the time or perhaps the finances to fund the restoration, and so Felix came to take it off his hands. Before that, the Range Rover had been with the same owner from a mere two years old, right up until 2013. Oth-
er than routine maintenance, though, this was an original last of the Classics. ‘It has had so much work done that I am sure I will forget some of it,’ says Felix when he starts to go through the resto work he carried out. ‘There’s a new boot floor, new sills and inner wings, front and rear. All the outer panels are still original as they were in good shape, while the wheels were refurbished, painted and lacquered.’ So that’ll be why they look so sparkly and mesmerising in the light. There’s more that Felix – and some of his friends – have done to the Rangey, however. The tyres and brakes are new, too, and the exhaust, headlining and air suspension. The exhaust is fresh out of the box, plus the lights, bumpers, indicators and window rubbers are all replacement parts.
‘I restored the leather interior and the interior wood has been refinished and lacquered, with the exterior subject to a full high-quality respray and the underside has been Waxoyled as well,’ says Felix. Sounds like he knows his way around a Range Rover, doesn’t it? But then given his occupation he probably should. ‘I work for Land Rover as the General Manager for Overseas Operations,’ Felix reveals. ‘Over the years I’ve had Defenders, a Series I, and I’ve had a couple of two-door Range Rovers too.’ Both sides of the grass have been sampled by Felix, then, but why does he stick to his guns behind the four-door? ‘I wanted one of the very last ones,’ he says as the 3.9EFI rides the automatic transmission through the cogs Continued overleaf

and continuously delivers those sweet Rover acoustics. ‘I love them all; they are the most useable Land Rovers you can get. But my Vogue SE is a modern car, a top of the range vehicle and a last of the line practical classic car,’ explains Felix. ‘For me there have always been two benchmark British cars: one is the original Mini – but the best, obviously, is the Land Rover.’ As if trying to get his foot on the ladder for a career, however, Felix admits that sometimes the most viable way of getting hold of a nice four-door Range Rover is by being prepared to restore it yourself. ‘If you do it yourself, you get the satisfaction of completing it and therefore more for your money,’ he reckons. ‘It’s nice to restore cars and bring them back to their former glory. It’s an enjoyable thing and this Range Rover was a joy to work on.’ So a memorable experience that results in one fine-looking four-door Classic – need any more persuading? Yes, Felix put a fair few pounds from his own wallet into restoring the vehicle, but then you can spend as the project develops rather than in one chunk. Felix’s four-door Rangey: twice as many doors, twice the car yet half the expense of a two-door. Sold. In Felix’s words, this Range Rover was going to be a car he’d keep forever, but circumstances have changed in recent months, meaning it needs to be moved on to a new home. His Range Rover has full service history and will come with a full year’s MOT when sold. He’s asking £13,995 and, if you’re interested, give him a call on 07900 704656

Above: A good way to protect your Land Rover (especially when you’ve poured over £35,000 into it) is to fit some chequer plating. On this particularly Discovery, it’s been used sparingly so it gives a nice contrast as oppose to looking like a shed. elve into the car park at any Land Rover event, whether it be a club occasion, one of the many shows throughout the year or even just a popular countryside cafe known to the green laners of this world, and there is a good chance you will spot a Td5 Discovery 2. Fantastic. That’s what they are, and that’s why so many people have endeavoured to put their own stamp on a vehicle that is found around every Land Rover corner you turn. And, naturally, as with all Land Rover models, eventually there will always come a point when the array of accessories for your Landy will become far more extensive than the options list on a brand new Range Rover. Which is a good thing, of course, because it means Jack is unlikely to have the same Td5 Disco as Jill. However, in this case, there’s a second-generation
Discovery 2s are great: great for towing, great for being a family vehicle and especially great at going offroad. You don’t even need many accessories to turn them into a special truck when you do go off-tarmac. But we’ve come across a Td5 D2 that’s had over £35,000 spent on it. What does that buy you? Discovery that has had more time and money spent on it than a D2 when it was brand new. Given the fact that this Discovery before you started life as an ES model, it was a Disco 2 that already had plenty of bells and whistles. And, just to give you an idea, an ES means heated leather seats, air conditioning and twin electric sunroofs, Harman Kardon stereo, cruise control and parking sensors. ‘Fully-loaded’ springs to mind. Still, we all have ambitions and one chap out there simply wasn’t content with a top of the tree Td5 Discovery. It’s a 2002 model, equipped with the automatic transmission and it managed to keep itself in standard form for the first five years of its life. That was until said owner came along and wanted to use this D2 as a canvas in order to paint out his ideal perception of what a D2 should be.

Above: If you’re going off-roading, guess what? You’ll need an off-road tyre! So, the award for the most popular off-road tyre is… the BFG Mud-Terrain The vehicle is currently for sale as we speak at Union 4x4 near Bradford, and Dave Williamson tells us that ‘the guy had a big vision, but an even bigger pot of money’. Some, I’m sure, will question the man’s sanity, especially when they learn that the final figure for having all these modifications installed reached a total of approximately £35,000. Today that would enable you to get a very good example of a Discovery 4. We’re talking serious bucks. Dave at Union 4x4 calls it the ‘Discovery Destroyer Extreme’. I call it the ‘late night eBay search gone wrong’. In any case, to be fair to the artist behind it, the modifications aren’t what you call cheap. Our silver fox here has been given the popular remap treatment by Alive Tuning and, thanks to a reworked ECU, the Td5 engine now thrums to the beat of 200bhp. Unsurprisingly, the list of enhancements doesn’t stop there, just like a Hollywood A-lister’s cosmetic history. There is a larger Garrett turbocharger bolted onto the motor which, eventually, filters a fusion of burnt hydrocarbons through the stainless steel exhaust that exits on the side of the vehicle. A bit like a Dodge Viper if you will, minus the jolly American at the wheel. Above: A dual battery controller is on-hand to help manage all of the vehicle’s electricals, whether you’re in regular road-going mode, or you need the assistance of the winch to get out of a rut or two Above Left: Naturally, there is a fair amount of protection on this Land Rover. At the front a heavy-duty front bumper possesses recovery points and a 12,000lb winch with plasma rope, but underneath lies a thick steering guard ready to bounce off granite
Above: Further heavy-duty gear; the rear bumper is from Devon 4x4 and still gives our jackpot car a towing point. And delving beyond lies a couple of diff guards at either end from QT Services Below: A Front Runner Expedition Roof Rackgives this Discovery 2 a practical edge and some credentials towards overlanding
It sounds rather delightful and that is before you hear about the off-road toys this machine has inherited. At both ends you’ll find ARB air-lockers that should mean this D2 can conquer most playsites around the country, especially with the rear differential being from Detroit. There are plenty of guards underneath the vehicle to protect those investments, both on the differentials and the fuel tank. The steering also profits from some protection as do the lights on the vehicle with some more well-positioned guards. Obviously the Discovery carries the usual wading kit and snorkel and it’s been equipped with D44 heavy-duty bumpers front and rear for when it slides down those tighter byways. To be sure that it doesn’t get stuck and take after a hippo wallowing in
mud, the D2 relies on an Old Man Emu suspension setup; lifted for greater articulation with a full polybush kit installed to aid the ride. The ZU alloys sport the renowned BFGoodrich tyres to provide traction. When the Disco 2 finally does get stuck – presumably while trying to tackle Everest or something – there is a 12,000 lb winch with Plasma rope to assist in hauling itself free. Rumour has it that this super Disco belonged to a BBC cameraman who needed something practical, but would also fulfil his needs as an off-roader. I can’t imagine him have been found wanting should there be any truth in the speculation. Certainly the Front Runner roof rack will have come in handy for lugging heavy equipment around. There are a couple of other notable additions to the Discovery, too, with the tree sliders and light bar almost fitted as standard items on older Discoverys these days, but it’s the 325mm six-pot caliper grooved brake discs that stand out to me. They are not small brakes, but then with all the engine mods it would be stupid not to do something about slowing down the near three-ton truck. This Discovery is evidence of how much you can spend on a D2, just up till the point before you start to chop it up and make it illegal for public roads. Whichever gentleman decided to put this project together, he was very clear and exact about what he wanted doing. All these customised additions are very popular choices in today’s off-road scene. It seems to me like our guy wanted to set an example in how it was done. Of course, not everyone has £35K to spend on an old Discovery 2. But it serves as a good benchmark as to how to go about it. I guess for many of us out there it just depends on how close we want to get to that mark – and whether our wallets will let us.

Forest enterprise
It’s not every day that you’re able to use your Land Rover in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We off-roaders are finding places to go increasingly limited in the 21st Century, but luckily there is one place where you can experience a relaxing adventure out in the countryside – and you’ll find it in the middle of the Midlands Words and Pictures: Mike Trott

annock Chase is one of the UK’s most scenic spots. It’s rightfully categorised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and yet you’ll find all this within a stone’s throw of Birmingham, Wolverhampton and the rest of the built-up Midlands. It’s a fantastic region, and one that I am fortunate enough to pass through on my commute to work. Much of the area is managed by the Forestry Commission, with this district of scenic refuge situated just north of the West Midlands and is the largest surviving low-lying heathland left in the Midlands. As you’d expect for a forest, there are a fair few trees about, in fact you’re talking roughly around 2500 hectares-worth of coniferous and broadleaf woodland. Every couple of months, however, the Forestry Commission runs an event purely for the benefit of Land Rover owners and other 4x4 users. It’s called 4x4 in the Forest and it does exactly what is carved into the bark. You and your Land Rover can venture
advice and fill us in on the do’s and don’ts of the forest and then promptly get on with day. And seeing as I was eager to see what the forest was hiding beyond the horizon of the roads, that suited me just fine. These trail tours operate on virtually every first Saturday morning of the month and cost £50 per vehicle. If there is a month where the event isn’t running, it’ll be because Roger is busy. Simply put, there is no one else to do it. ‘I’ve been here for 28 years,’ says Roger. As soon as those words left him, I got the feeling that this guy is very at home in these woods. I started to ask him about the 4x4 event and why it was set up in the first place. ‘It’s a good opportunity to view the Chase from a different perspective where 4x4s are usually prohibited. We have run a non-scratchy event before and we’ve had a new Range Rover going down the trails with us,’ remembers Roger. ‘These we run normally twice a year for the smarter vehicles. ‘Most people never even take their 4x4s off-road and they have no idea
into the forest with a whole selection of trails waiting to be explored. I was able to get a very privileged seat back in March for one of the first runs of the year alongside Cannock Forester, Roger Wilson, who organises and leads the group through the Chase. When I say group, it’s because there are only a limited amount of spaces available on the event, with a maximum of around ten vehicles allowed. I pulled up to our meeting point at the Birches Valley Forest Centre, a busy terminal for all forest lovers who want to enjoy the surrounding area by whichever medium they deem to be best. Around 350,000 visitors pass through the centre each year and it’s a real synergy of groups coming together to all appreciate the environment that we sometimes forget is on our doorstep. I certainly have been guilty of this at times. Roger is a very straightforward, no-nonsense sort of guy. So, with us all due to set off into the forest at 9.15am, Roger likes to turn up at 9am, give us a small briefing to offer driving
what the vehicle is capable of. The furthest off-road they ever go is when they mount a kerb in a car park.’ With that last comment, you’re probably likely to pick up on Roger’s desert-dry humour, something that comes out on more than one occasion throughout the morning. ‘All Land Rovers and 4x4s can do this event, though. We had an Evoque join us and it was great. The only limitation it had was its ground clearance, but it’s just about knowing your vehicle and how to drive it,’ he explains. The event is generally a relaxing drive through scene after scene of beautiful landscapes. To me, there just seems to be something sacred and medieval about forests. The event I was on is aimed at intermediate off-roaders, so there are occasions when you need to stop admiring the views and pay attention so you can complete the route. Mud and water is there to be sampled and, with the fleet that took on the trails in March, many of the vehicles were relatively stock Continued on P40

Luna? Tick
National Luna makes off-road fridges and freezers at their base in South Africa. That’s a pretty rugged start. But while having the ability to keep your beers cool while you head off into the wild is pretty cool in all senses, there is the small issue of actually keeping the fridges powered. This has then led to dual-battery systems so your stubbies can
keep chilled while you cook up a braai. Luna has come up with two solutions, both of which it’s keen to point out have ticks and minuses. One is the on-board unit usually mounted in the engine bay, the second is a portable power pack. Which you favour is down to you although clearly having it under the bonnet does free up a bit of space in the rear. So the on-board wins for space, but the portable unit rather naturally wins on flexibility and mobility. Luna’s solution is to use an intelligent solenoid system, something they championed about 18 years ago. It’s a split-isolator system so the dual-battery isolator is parallel to your Landy’s original wiring so there’s no interference. This is a cheaper system than some of the more electronic setups, and it’s rugged and reliable too. So if you want to have a look and decide if you need space or mobility more, then Luna has both and you’ll find them here: www. expedition-equipment.com
eat you or even just deeply horrible weather that wants to drown you. The conversion hinges the new roof up so that you have much more space and headroom in your Defender and all the bedding and bed is above you, ready for you to sort it out and hop in when you’re ready. You don’t need to even leave the vehicle, which could be handy at times. It’s all robustly made, with the aluminium roof being fully insulated for heat, cold and noise. There are three windows which zip open but they have mesh screens to keep the bugs out. Those bugs might be attracted by the two LED reading lamps which are fitted to the bed. This seems a well thought out design based on some serious experience. It’s also pretty easy to fit. They send you the roof and the whole kit
with the instructions. You simply unbolt your roof and bolt this one on. That means you could take it with you to your next Defender, and simply reattach the original roof to the old vehicle. The whole caboodle sits 18cm higher than the standard roof, and it weighs 130kg, but against that you have to discount the weight of the
original roof. This conversion means you have a rugged Defender during the day, exploring where few can explore, yet in the evening it turns into a civilised camper van, with room to stand, a bed all ready and all mod cons. Priced at £7300, you’ll find more info here: xs4x4.parts/pop-top-kitland-rover-defender-110-642-p.asp
There’s a Masai on the back Given the rugged nature of a lot of Land Rover off-roading, here and abroad, carrying at least one spare wheel is pretty much essential – a little can of foam and air really
isn’t going to do the trick. But a wheel and tyre are heavy old things, and door-mounting them doesn’t always do the door hinges any favours.
Masai Land Rover Defender Spare Wheel Carriers, for the 90 and 110, are mounted on the chassis rather than the door to ease the strain. The carriers are made of heavy-duty steel, which is then zinc coated and thermoplastic powder coated for a long life. The hinges on the carrier has hinged bushes with grease nipples so everything is set up to last for years, whatever the conditions. If you have a pre-2002 Defender then the kit comes with a strengthening kit as part of it, plus all kits come with full fitting instructions. Prices start at £118.00, so wheel over to: www.masai4x4.com/defender/spare-wheel-carrier/

Roger makes sure that you have learnt at least one thing about the forest when you go home. ‘Over £1.4 million is generated each year from the income of timber and we shift approximately 30,000 tonnes a year,’ informs Roger. When you start hearing numbers like that you realise just what the Forestry Commission does. These are not just tall objects to be gawped at. ‘Our timber is sold throughout both England and Wales. The bigger trees usually go for construction or fencing, while the smaller ones tend to be used for stakes, MDF and chipboard etc. We clear about 30 hectares a year and replant the exact same amount. We always replant what we fell so it is a sustainable program.’ Roger continues to say that the trees can grow up to as much as 120ft high and that while they may harvest 30,000 tonnes of timber a year, some are lost through wind and disease. Plus, the forest has to carry out its own type of pest control. ‘We control rabbits and deer because they eat the trees. Obviously the by-product from the deer is some nice venison, which brings in another £35,000-40,000 a year,’ Roger says. ‘We have about 6-700 deer situated here continuously, which means we need to manage them on our land.’ Having digested some of Cannock Chase’s facts and the insight into the daily workings of the foresters like Roger, I was granted a seat aboard Steve Richards’ L322 Range Rover. It’s a TDV8 - only minus the TD. Steve has only had the Rangey a couple of weeks, but is clearly enjoying the occasion. Not that this is his first time. ‘I try and come pretty much every time. I am often a backmarker for
Roger and it just helps with the organisation of the day,’ reveals Steve. ‘He trusts us as we’ve been regulars for some time now.’ When Steve refers to ‘us’, he also means Dave and Sue Stebbings, his mother- and father-in-law who are a few Land Rovers ahead in the blue Td5 Discovery. Before long I’m playing musical Land Rovers and am sitting with the couple themselves. So how did they get into this and why do they keep coming back? ‘We first did the event about four years ago after it came up in general conversation with Roger,’ says Dave as we descend down a slippery slope and join another trail at the bottom. ‘Roger lives across the road from us and we go to the same local pub quiz, you see. To be honest, I got into off-roading as a hobby in my retirement. ‘We like the 4x4 in the Forest event because it’s organised for you; you don’t have to do owt, just drive and enjoy. We used to have three or four turn up, but now it’s more like ten.’ Dave and Sue also endeavour to make every 4x4 in the Forest event, because, as Dave points out, if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it! ‘A lot of the reason for going is the Chase and seeing it from that different view. Roger knows this place like the back of his hand, so the last one, for instance, was totally different to this one. He always mixes it up,’ says Dave. As we navigate back to Birches Valley Forest Centre, I join Steve again, only this time he is my co-driver. While I’m enjoying the luxury of the affair and getting to grips with the L322 and its V8 through Cannock’s green heart, Steve mentions what could lay ahead in the future for 4x4s in the forest.
While looking surprisingly relaxed as I wiggle his two-week-old Rangey through the trees, Steve says, ‘We’ve talked recently with Roger about how we could possibly expand the event. Some suggestions included early morning runs for those with a wildlife interest, and maybe picnic runs, photography runs, safari or late night runs, even snow runs in the winter perhaps. We’ve toyed with the idea of a day for beginners, too, and those wives and girlfriends out there who want to have a change from being in the passenger seat. ‘It will never be that hardcore, but they have to have the interests of the forest at heart. We are lucky to have Roger as he makes sure we are included and gives us a very strong voice as a 4x4 community.’ Eventually, we wind up back at the start line and I begrudgingly hand over the controls to Steve. In all seriousness, though, I must thank him now for his generosity. As for the 4x4 in the Forest event, think of it as a trackday, but for 4x4s. It’s the same principle. You go to an allocated location where you are given the opportunity in an organised event to push your vehicle closer to its limits, safe in the knowledge that there is an experienced person on-hand if things get out of control. I for one had never been exposed to the Chase in such a way before and it was a pleasure to be there. If enterprises like the Forestry Commission can work with 4x4 users and we are able to have our share of the countryside like everyone else, then I’m sure the off-road community will be as happy as the drivers and passengers who returned from Cannock that Saturday morning in March.

When Two goes Into one: Part Two
It’s time for the second half of the tale about two broken Landies, and how together they managed to create a utopia for one keen enthusiast. ast month we reflected on a project conducted by Paul Wood. He and his mate had been busy buying up some ‘bargain’ Land Rovers. The only problem was that they were cheap for a reason. There’s a lesson here kids: if it looks cheap, it’ll probably come back to give you problems. And the rule doesn’t just apply to cars either! Still, to recap, Paul and his friend were looking at a glum-faced Discovery 1, which had more holes in its body than an Egyptian mummy dug up in the sand, and a Range Rover with an engine that was as dead as, well, the mummy again. Thankfully, these boys had more brains than said mummy and, as a result, they were able to come up with the ingenious plan of putting the Range Rover body on to the Discovery 1’s drivetrain. So, how hard could it be?
Last time out, the boys had just finished the fun job of slicing up the Discovery’s body; had got the drivetrain and Range Rover’s body whittled down into separate entities and were preparing for the next stage of the build. ‘After cleaning and painting the chassis and fitting the wading kit, we concentrated on the underside of the Classic’s body,’ says Paul, who has worked on all kinds of vehicles, including – as we found out in Part One of the story – a 600hp Mitsubishi Evo. ‘We made sure the Classic was all cleaned, especially in the hard-toreach places that would be difficult to access once it was all re-attached to the chassis.’ The next phase of the project was arguably the biggest, and needed the biggest toy around to complete the job. It involved the placing of the Range Rover body onto the Discovery’s chassis and required the use

9. Paul’s Range Rover includ es such luxuries as a gearstick, ste ering wheel and air freshener 10. A glamorous Range Rov er figure on the outside, but a ruthle ss Tdi lurks within of some locally-sourced farming equipment. Normally when a process sounds simple, God likes to intervene and throw a curveball in there just to brighten up his day. However when Paul came to slot the Classic on the D1, the good Lord merely sat back and applauded the lads for salvaging a working Land Rover out of what initially appeared to be two utter duds. ‘Surprisingly, yes, the placing of the body was literally a one-shot deal, straight down onto the new bolts,’ smiles Paul. ‘Sadly I didn’t get a go in the tractor, though.’ Well, someone had to take the photos didn’t they! Their luck held out once the body was on, too. But then seeing as they used identical chassis, a straightforward swap was nothing less than expected. Complications did start to surface when it came to the interior, though. Paul & Co found out that a 200Tdi dashboard would have been a lot easier to integrate than the 300 they were dealing with. Having said that, he admits he’s happy they persevered with what they had. ‘I’m pretty glad we did do the 300 dash in the end, as the 200 just wouldn’t look right,’ claims Paul. ‘Especially as the 300 is so close to the Range Rover Classic soft dash.’ Any other tips you’d recommend then, Paul? ‘Take your time with the wiring loom. We hacked the old loom out of the RRC and made it a pain to get things like the sunroof working again. In the Disco, the loom goes up under Continued overleaf

Essex LRC goes coast to coast

wo groups of four Land Rovers from Essex recently enjoyed fantastic weather and fabulous scenery on a four-day coast-to-coast trip. They
mostly used green lanes, UCRs and minor roads. ELRC’s RoW Officer, Ray Booty, had researched and planned a route, which started almost on the beach at Workington on the west coast looking at the Irish Sea, and finished at Boggle Hole near Robin Hoods Bay at the North Sea. Accommodation had
been booked at the beginning and end with overnight stops at Penrith, Scotch Corner and Guisborough. Day one took in the spectacular mountains of the northern Lake District as we travelled through Whinlatter Pass with its views of Skiddaw, to Castlerigg stone circle and then along the Old Coach Road. Day 2 saw everyone crossing the Pennines. There were several great river crossings including the River Eden and notable views of the Settle to Carlisle Railway and from Fremington Edge. On Day 3 we stopped at Rievaulx Abbey for lunch, and saw the biggest ‘Please Shut the Gate’ sign – surely a testament to the stonemason’s art. Everyone crossed through more superb fords and drove along Rudland Rigg which covers enormous grouse moors. The end of this route is a rocky descent which is quite challenging but even the Freelander took it in its stride. The final day was a slightly shorter day but still we had superb views from the moors and pretty fords. As
we approached the coast we could see mist or sea fog rolling across the fields and were concerned that we would not have the sunny sea views that we had enjoyed on the first day. Luckily we drove through the mist and out into the sunshine again, as we parked at Boggle Hole and walked the last few yards to the sea.
It was a fantastic adventure that was memorable not only for the green lanes and unsurfaced roads, but also the minor roads which were very quiet and traffic free. The wild flowers were amazing, the weather started out lovely and followed us all the way across the country, and the company was excellent too.

or those unfamiliar with our competitions (off road trials), the intention is to set up ten separate sections, each consisting of 13 gates (pairs of canes) including the start gate and numbering from 12 down to one. The idea is to firstly walk each section in turn and then, when it’s your turn, drive forward through the gates without stopping and without hitting any of them. Everyone hopes to finish the section with a clear score sheet. Stopping or hitting a cane would score a penalty as marked on the top of the cane. I’m lucky enough to work for Andy Shipman and have the benefit of discussing site alterations with him well in advance to enable me to always try to provide ten good sections on ground that we are all now very familiar with. Taking out a bush here or a small tree there (usually dead or minor items), allows me the chance to put in a few new routes or at least change the direction of those used on earlier occasions. For a change this year I laid out three of the ten sections in the far field at Eaton and that is where we started. This year’s CCVT (cross country vehicle trial) began with eight competitors, but this could have been worse given a few problems encountered when entrants’ vehicles were scrutineered and some were found to have problems.
With the niggles all sorted, we started with two ‘class 10’ vehicles, Martin in his 88” and three Limb family members in the 86”. The remaining vehicles were three ‘class 9’, each singly driven, and finally Simon Wise in his ‘class 6’ leaf sprung V8. Section 1 was through gorse bushes and up a final hill which beat everyone as nobody managed to get through the final gate without hitting the left hand cane – assuming they’d got that far. Section 2 looped up and down inclines but anyone trying the slow-speed approach and relying on grip for the ascents came unstuck. The third section was laid out assuming rain, but that assumption proved incorrect! Everyone went clear, but it’s good for everyone to get a clear under their belts. That run ended for most over the next couple of sections but the sixth section showed we needed to alter the section. Having duly done
so, Steve, who had been the one who showed it needed changing, had another go. It didn’t go well. He demolished a tree which he’d avoided on his first go and then this all caused problems for those following. Time for lunch. Maybe it was lunch, but the first section after it saw seven of the eight drivers manage to score a one with some spirited attempts. Later sections included areas where we’d had a digger in to modify the ground. It needed more time to really settle, but it worked well with some going clear, some getting caught out. The final section saw everything from a ten to a clear, so we’re doing something right! Congratulations to Simon Wise who was the overall winner, and in a leaf-sprung motor at that. Thanks also to Andy, Simone, Ray and Donald for marshalling, scrutineering and other duties and Andy for letting us use the site all weekend.

here are so many things that members of an off-road club can join in with: green road trips, trials and social events to name but a few, but a big part of the year for the Suffolk Land Rover Owners Club is spent sharing the 4x4 passion with those that might not yet have come across our hobby, by giving off-road rides at country shows around their home county. It’s not just about sharing the fun, though, there’s a serious side to it as well and for everyone that gets to ride around in a club member’s Land Rover, a few quid is collected and put in the pot to be donated to charities at the end of the year. It’s a simple idea really, each year club members nominate worthy local charities that will benefit from all of those rides and hopefully at the same
time as raising money, the club can also raise the profile for those local charitable organisations. All the courses we drive are tame by most 4x4 site standards but the beauty is that to most people who haven’t been off-road, our ‘tame’ is their ‘scream and shout’ and as we go up seemingly impossible hills and down into car swallowing hollows; tip the cars into gravity-defying side slopes (that one gets everybody) and drive over all sorts of man-made obstacles including bumpy log bridges, ramps and an ‘aim at the sky see-saw’, we’re having fun whilst our passengers think they are experiencing ‘mild peril’ in a Land Rover, even though we’re always 100% in-control and safe. It’s that rollercoaster ride for just a few quid that people love. The biggest show of the year is the Suffolk Show at Trinity Park, Ipswich, where in just a couple of days we can give upwards of 3,500 rides and collect
anything up to £10,000 for our nominated charities. After all if we weren’t at a show giving rides, we’d only be down a green road somewhere or at a pay and play site having the same fun!
In 2015 we raised £13,500, the bulk of which is going towards helping the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) buy a new response vehicle as well as a number of smaller amounts that went to support other charities around the county. This year at the Suffolk Show, even with downpours on day one and a cold and blustery day two, the guys managed to dig
really deep and still raised £9,500 that this year will go towards helping the Suffolk Lowland Search and Rescue team and the Suffolk Punch Trust. If you’re already in Suffolk or just visiting, have a look at the club website at www.slroc.uk.com and check the calendar to see if we’re at a show you can get to and come along for a ride to see what it’s all about – see you there!
