ith the clock ticking on the current Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, Land Rover recently unveiled a new SVR Ultimate edition of the latter vehicle. This is based on the existing Sport SVR, with the same 575bhp supercharged V8 engine and 176mph, 4.5-second performance to go with its muscular but understated appearance and dramatic soundtrack.
W
The SVR Ultimate will be somewhat less understated than the standard model, however, as it’s offered with a choice of exclusive Maya Blue Gloss and Marl Grey Gloss paint colours. These are applied using glass flake base coats to give them what Land Rover describes as ‘an intense, starlike sparkle.’ A third paint option is satin-finished Ligurian Black. In each case, the
vehicle will come with a Narvik Black contrast roof, gloss black 22” forged alloy wheels and black brake calipers. Narvik Black is also used on the door mirrors, front grilles and grille surrounds, front wing details and tailgate finishers. The ‘Range Rover’ badging on the bonnet and tailgate will be in gloss black too, edged in Fuji White – a colour also used on the vehicle’s side vents. Inside, the vehicle is marked out by an SV Bespoke Ultimate edition commissioning plaque, chrome SV Bespoke B-pillar badges, illuminated Ultimate edition treadplates and black anodised gearshift paddles. SVRembossed lightweight seats are trimmed in Windsor leather and contrasting Suedecloth. While this is definitely not a truck for green laning, the SVR Ultimate edition remains a Range Rover at heart – with all the off-road ability that brings. Unveiled to the public at the Salon Privé event at Blenheim Palace in September, it’s available to order now – with prices starting at £123,900.

hite Stones, a famous and extremely beautiful green lane north of Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog in the county of Wrexham, is set to become the focus of a court battle after being reduced to a scene of devastation by opponents of motor vehicle use. The lane has been the scene of obstructive and even violent behaviour in the past, most notably when spike traps have been buried in the surface to damage vehicles (with the potential to maim horses, cyclists or walkers as collateral damage); those responsible have never been brought to book, the result being that they have felt empowered to employ ever more extreme tactics in an escalating war against legal users. Lauren Eaton, who is the Wrexham Rep for the Green Lane Association, takes up the story ‘Not only are there over a dozen major obstructions ranging from huge boulders, tangles of old fencing, tree stumps and locked gates, but the adjacent watercourse has been diverted across the lane and several trenches have appeared, the dug-out material piled up in a further attempt to block passage. ‘Numerous reports to Wrexham County Council, the police and Natural Resources Wales have been ignored. So I decided it was time to serve the
W
local authority with a notice under Section 56 of the Highways Act 1980. ‘The initial waiting period of one month is now over. Wrexham CC failed to respond during that time and communication was only forthcoming when I emailed the head of department to ask if there was a reason for the delay in them answering the legal notice. ‘They confirmed that the lane is a public road and that they are responsible for it. This is step one of the legal process. The next step is to take the matter to court.’ For such flagrantly criminal behaviour to go unaddressed is an obvious
affront, not least when the police in this part of Wales have boasted of organising substantial operations to catch illegal off-roaders (by which they appear to have meant stopping drivers and riders on legal routes for minor vehicle defects). To the best of our knowledge, the extent of the efforts made by the authorities to identify those behind the annihilation of this precious and entirely sustainable right of way and bring them to justice have amounted to zero. ‘This isn’t going to be a quick or simple process,’ says Lauren. ‘But ultimately we hope that it will be the remedy to this ongoing issue.’

Gibson’s Gab When is a classic not a classic?
Our columnist’s head is turned by a £17k Series I this month. But with a 200 Tdi beneath the bonnet, does it count as a collector’s item? Words: Tim Gibson IT ALL STARTS with a casual belowthe-line comment exchange on Facebook. Editor Kidd has remarked on the largesse of a double exclamation mark used in a post by the man who basically taught us both how to be motoring journalists. I feel it necessary to chip in with my own mockery, whereupon the Kiddster changes tack entirely and alerts me to the presence of a beautiful Series I for sale on eBay. Reason is, the number plate features the letters MTY, which is a reasonable approximation of my son’s name (good ol’ Mty, how we love him). Now, I obviously don’t have the required £17k knocking around to
contemplate making a purchase. If I did, though, I’d very seriously consider this vehicle. For a tidy Series I with a nice interior and slick bodywork, it’s one helluva buy. I reckon it will only go up in value as the years wear on – as with most classic Land Rovers, the market is set to grow. There is, though, one blot on the horizon. Quite a big blot, actually, in the form of the 200 Tdi lurking beneath that green bonnet. Because if there’s one thing that will put the purists off such a vehicle, it’s anything that smacks of being non-standard. From a collector’s point of view, such a modification is a major turn-off. For me, it’s rather different. It makes a classic Landy more appealing to think
there’s a decent turbocharged engine delivering the good stuff. In my view, it makes for a more realistic daily driver – or a vehicle I can use for more than just the occasional run around the block, at least. With a Tdi engine, this Series I would have plenty of beans. Plus, being a 200-series unit, it’s relatively straightforward even for a novice home mechanic like me to work on. So it’s a win-win: a better driving experience and the simplicity of a Land Rover engine that’s old enough to suit the DIYer. I totally understand, though, why a collector would disagree. For a Series I to count as an appreciating classic, it needs to be totally original. If restored, the job needs to be done sympathetically, using original equipment where
possible and ensuring the finished article has museum-like qualities of authenticity. For the collector, a classic Landy needs to look as it did on the day it left Lode Lane, right down to its nuts and bolts. If it doesn’t, no matter how driveable the mods make it, there’s no point investing. But I wonder if this will change. Several specialists are starting to pop up who convert classic cars into electric vehicles. They remove original power plants and replace them with eco-friendly units that give instant torque and a much-improved driving experience with zero local tailpipe emis-
sions. As the world gradually turns its back on the internal combustion engine, and use of all-electric engines becomes a handy way for the rich and super rich to signal their virtue, this is likely to be a growth market. Which begs a question: what say someone spends the 17 grand on that 200 Tdi Series I and, over time, invests in a cutting-edge electric power plant for it? I’ve a feeling that the resulting vehicle could be worth a packet in the years to come – perhaps even more than equivalent-spec vehicles in all-original condition. I shall tell young Mty to get saving.

Land Rover owners rally round to help fire-ravaged Swedish specialist and Rover owners and enthusiasts in Sweden have rallied round in support of Ground Zero 4wd, a specialist garage near Fjärdhundra, about an hour north-west of Stockholm, after its entire premises were destroyed in a fire. The fire, whose cause has not yet been confirmed, ra ed the company’s workshop to the ground – taking with it a total of 53 vehicles and a lifetime’s collection of tools, some of which are likely to be irreplaceable. On the morning of 3 September, Björn Brouwers and Rachael Cook, who between them own and run Ground Zero 4x4, had just departed on an overland holiday when they received word from a shocked member of their staff about what had happened. ‘Our two guys were in the workshop when it happened and fortunately got away with just minor physical injuries,’ says Rachael. ‘But i think it has been hard on them as it was so big and so quick, there was nothing they could do. It was very traumatic for them. The fire brigade made the decision to let it burn itself out, so no attempt was made to save it. Hence everything was lost.’ This includes the 53 vehicles, mostly Land Rovers. ‘Seventeen were our own,’ says Rachael, ‘including 1948 and 1949 Series Is and a Defender we were building into a camper which had just come back from a respray.’
L
’S SS
The day after the fire, round ero customer Pelle Bergschöld started a collection on GoFundMe to help Björn and Rachael get the business back off the ground. ‘Over here,’ he old us, ‘really good and proficient Land Rover mechanics are few and far between. I’m very grateful for having played a small part in preventing such a loss from our Swedish LR community. ‘Bj rn has always has been very generous with remote support to those of us trying to sort mechanical problems on our own. After the fire, it was obvious that many people wanted to support him and Rachael. I am pretty chuffed about having been able to provide a channel for them to do it. ‘There’s always going to be costs not covered by insurance, and a time between the loss and any insurance payout. From experience, this is what makes people give up – and I just couldn’t let that happen.’ With the help of this support, the company was able to get back on its feet to the extent that on 21 September,
just 18 days after the fire, the first Land Rover rolled out of a new, much smaller but still functioning workshop. ‘We have no idea how we can thank everyone but we are truly grateful,’ says Rachael. ‘Without the support I don’t know how we would have made it through. ‘We hope to be back on our feet fully soon, under a new name and a new brand. A fresh start. We were Ground Zero 4wd, but now we are Phoenix Land Rover. With the support of those around us, and with hard work and determination, we WILL rise from the ashes.’

My kingdom for a tank of diesel…

’m writing this on the day that more hopeful news starts to emerge about the fuel shortage. The number of filling stations sucked dry by fren ied motorists is decreasing, it appears, and perhaps we won’t need the Army after all. Just so long as our short-term visa blag succeeds in tempting enough workers back from Europe, at least. The queues outside the fuel station at the top of my road are down to about half a dozen cars now, too. At this rate, I might even be able to drive down to Devon soon to take a look at the 110 project I’ve spotted on eBay. That last sentence is probably about as relevant as this little rant is likely to get. Rewind to last Friday night and I was sat in my wife’s car (which was on fumes), waiting for my turn at the one pump that still had diesel coming out of it. I had already turned back in sheer disgust a couple of times before finally, at 11.30pm, the line was down to a tolerable length. Even then, I still had plenty of time to marvel at the doe-eyed mentality of my fellow human beings Embarrassingly, my own truck was on fumes too, so five minutes later I was back to fill that up too. Cue lots of tutting from the staff, who quite reasonably thought I was one of that lot. Having to turn round a five-metre long vehicle under those circumstances and reverse in alongside the pump, because the only one left was on the wrong side and the hose wasn’t long enough to make it all the way round… now, that made it all worthwhile. Anyway, by the time you read this it will all be back to normal and we’ll have moved on to panic-buying fireworks or James Bond tickets instead. But it does make me wonder. The way the Defender market has gone in the last couple of years… is that a form of panic buying too? The supply has dried up, prices are going potty, people are willing to pay top dollar even for rubbish ones… it’s almost as if we’re scared senseless about being left behind when they’re all gone. Which brings me back to that 110. Must dash. So if you’d just look away while I siphon your tank… Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk

Quick change from Lazer as Defender fitting kit gets early upgrade LAZER LAMPS HAS ANNOUNCED an unusually early update for its range of grille mounts to suit the new Land Rover Defender. This had led to the existing Triple-R 1250 kits being discontinued and replaced with a set
of new solutions to suit the company’s Linear-18 range. Lazer says the reason for the change is that on vehicles fitted with the Triple-R 1250 kit, the lamp’s body could block the front-facing parking camera’s

STORAGE DRAWERS ARE MORE COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH vehicles built for overland travel. But we’ve all seen the sort of carnage that can occur in the back of a Defender – which is what ARB’s Outback Solutions Single Drawer Module is here to prevent. Designed for the 90 and 110 Station Wagon built between 2002 and 2016, this contains a roller drawer and can be supplemented by an optional side cabinet system. The unit has an external frame size of 790mm wide x 1070mm long and 280mm high, while the drawer’s internal capacity measures 730mm x 970mm x 220mm. Weighing in at 63kg, ARB says the drawer kit incorporates ‘unique and practical features incorporated into their design to ensure high quality, maximum functionality and ease of use.’ These include: • Fully galvanised steel chassis Drawer Dividers One fixed long divider separates the drawer into two compartments, with an additional two removable dividers for flexibility Anti-roll Back System This incorporates mechanisms on the roller drawer that lock it in the open position, preventing unintentional closing when the vehicle is on uneven ground. The mechanisms engage at full opening of the roller drawer and are disengaged automatically when closing • Anti-rattle: The drawer is designed with locks which eliminate movement while closed, thus preventing it from
rattling (and also suffering unnecessary wear and tear) while driving Stainless Steel Runners The drawer’s bearings run on stainless steel, chosen over a galvanised finish and telescopic action for the longevity and smooth, quiet operation it allows U Stable Carpet Exterior surfaces are finished in hard-wearing commercial carpet and interior surfaces are trimmed in automotive boot carpet, both of which resist abrasion and conceal dirt. Professional finish All carpets are precision cut, and aluminium trims are used to protect the drawer’s corners and ends Slam Shut Latches Slam-shut, pull-open handles make it easy to open and close the drawer, even with your hands full. The handle is lockable, too To make the most of the drawer set-up, you can also add ARB’s Side Floor Kit. This fills in the area between the outer edge of the drawer and the side of the rear boot area, giving the Defender a more usable full-width boot floor. This being ARB equipment, it’s proper quality stuff. And it’s been shipped from Australia. Two reasons why you needn’t expect it to be cheap. And you can expect the drawer to owe you a bit more than a grand, with the side floors adding a couple of hundred on top, so it is indeed not. But spend it once, spend it right, as they say. As always with ARB, the place to look is at www.britpart.com.

Contemporary classic
There’s the kind of classic Land Rover that’s as close as possible to the way it was when it was new. Then there are those like this Series I – that’s still relevant as a modern fun truck but hasn’t lost any of its original charater Words: Dan Fenn
‘Monty is a cool looking beastie who is great for cutting around town or the countryside’
his isn’t the first time that we’ve said this. But while we do always appreciate a good classic, there’s something refreshing about old Land Rovers that have been kept alive as trucks to enjoy, not just to coo over.
T
We recently featured an 80 Series I that had been restored back from its beaten state as a former trials motor and turned into a cool daily drive – making the most of all the mods that had been done to it for competition use to create a sort of funky retro
hot-rod. It wouldn’t get within a mile of a concours, but rather than being a museum piece it was a proper bit of history – not original but still as relevant today as it was back then. The 88 Series I in these pictures hasn’t had a life of trialling, nor is it quite as early as the aforementioned 80. It dates from 1957, making it one from the last year of Series I production, when it took to the road equipped with Land Rover’s newfangled 2.0-litre, 52bhp overhead valve diesel engine.

At the time, this was excitingly modern. But at some point during the life of Monty, as this particular Series I is known to its owner, someone was less than excited about it. That’s why, for all the charm you can see oo ing out of these pages, you won’t catch Monty lined up in a concours. You’re much more likely to find him prowling a splendid beat around the lanes of Oxfordshire with his current owner, a chap called Mark, enjoying life behind the wheel. We say ‘current,’ however, because thanks to the tiresome reality of buying a house, he’s not going to be for much longer. oing back to the engine, at some stage the original 2.0-litre unit has been fetched out and replaced. A sentence like this can be the jumping-
off point for all manner of horrors, but in this case it sounds like a very proper job indeed as the conversion has been fully certified and recorded by the D LA on the vehicle’s log book. And what is it? A 200 Tdi, that’s what. Perfect, you may well be agreeing, and that’s exactly how it looks under the bonnet. In other ways, Monty is a good example of a Series I that’s been kept well enough maintained never to need major restoration work. Under a body that’s straight enough but nicely patinated, the chassis and bulkhead have both been welded in the past – and those repairs have done the job, because the whole structure is still rock solid and isn’t showing any signs of going crusty again.

Talking of the body, it wears a nearly new canvas hood and stands proud on a set of Cooper Discoverer STT Pros, whose si e and modern mud-terrain tread give the vehicle a chunky look that’s kind of at odds with the demure comportment of an original on its meek little 6.00s. At odds in a good way, obviously – there was nothing wrong with the original, but there sure ain’t nothing wrong with a Series I that looks like this either. To make it even better, when that canvas comes off (and the windscreen goes down, if you’re really brave), the world gets to see you perched magnificently in a three-up array of faux-leather seats. Actually, it’s very sporting of Mark to use the word ‘faux’
because we’ve rarely seen anything more convincing – we reckon most people would willingly believe they were the real thing. They’re backed up by a couple of inward-facing benches in the rear, again with the same brown leatherlook finish, and the steering wheel is wrapped in a similar material. And that’s enough. Enough to turn a standard old Land Rover into what Mark describes as ‘a cool looking beastie which is great for cutting around town or the countryside.’ You can’t disagree. Even if modding up an original classic is something you wouldn’t do now, when you come to one that’s already had some work done historically there’s certainly
nothing wrong with turning it into a cool retro ride. And they don’t come much cooler than this. Of course, there’s the argument about what they’re worth in showroom form. But a non-concours 88 diesel with its original engine and so on might be expected to fetch something in the mid-twenties. And Monty is not far off that, with a certificated insurance valuation of 21,000. That being the case, the fact that Mark wants 17,000 or sensible offers… and with that, dear reader, you have stopped reading and gone leafing frantically off to our Classifieds section, where Monty is currently listed for sale. The end… or, for someone, a wonderful beginning.

THE GREAT BRITISH LAND ROVER SHOW
NAEC STONELEIGH
’s r a o
ast time we all got together at Stoneleigh for the Great British Land Rover Show, we were blissfully unaware of what was about to happen. Just a few short weeks after the last deal had been done, the last stand had been knocked down and packed up and the last happy punter had headed for home, thousands of miles away someone coughed… and the world has been in a state of turmoil ever since. Last year, it was wall-to-wall No Shows. This year, Britain has been edging back towards normality. And with Christmas on the way, we’re delighted to be able to press ahead with our plans for the event that’s become the traditional send-off for the Land Rover show season. The venue is, as usual, the NAEC in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. The date is Sunday 21 November. And the event is a festival of all things Land Rover with more to see, and more going on, than ever before! As always, there’ll be a wide range of trade stands in the exhibition halls waiting to tempt you with some of

the best products on the market. And we’ve reserved a section for the clubs that are the lifeblood of the Landy scene – providing the perfect place to meet old friends after what’s been a long time away. Our ever-popular off-road course will be in action again, too, once again run and marshalled by the All Wheel Drive Club. But if you want one more big one, this year we’ve teamed up with Land Rover Experience to offer you the chance for a passenger ride on its unique Terrapod. You might come away wanting to buy a new Land Rover – but wasn’t that already the case for the whole of the show? There’s a full run-down of the attractions overleaf. More to see and do than ever before!
Land Rover Experience With intense inclines, dramatic descents, sideways tilts and more, the Land Rover Experience is all about experiencing our vehicles’ signature capability first hand. After all, where’s the fun in flat? Be driven round the Land Rover Experience by one of Land Rover’s specialist instructors. The Dynamic Display Equipment has been designed to showcase the technology and capabilities of all Land Rover products. Each piece of equipment in the portfolio brings its own obstacles and dimensions to your Experience. The pieces at this event will include: Mini Terrapod 2, Articulating Ramps and Side Slope. Extreme articulations will enable the vehicles’ suspension systems to
extend and traction systems to initiate. Hill climbing ability, Hill Start Assist and Gradient Release Control – allowing the gradual release of the brakes for a composed and controlled descent – are just a few of many features that can be seen during the activity. On some obstacles, the vehicle is taken through the unit as well as over it. As the vehicle drives through the centre of the Mini Terrapod 2, it must negotiate its route across a set of rollers. This perfectly demonstrates the ability of the Land Rover range to tackle low grip surfaces and showcases features such as Electronic Traction Control. Ask the Experience’s knowledgeable instructors about technology, features, extras and vehicles past and present. They know their stuff and will be more than happy to help!
Tickets for the Land Rover Experience at the show cost £5 in advance or £7.50 on the day.
Off-Road Course – run by the AWDC Returning for the 2021 Great British Land Rover Show is the opportunity to drive your own vehicle round our fantastic on-site 2.4-mile off road course. The course has several levels of difficulty and is suitable for all levels of driver ability and experience. The course is also suitable for all makes and models from Series I’s to New Defenders and everything in between! What’s more, the All Wheel Drive Club will be on hand to offer advice and tips on how to drive off-road – as well as helping you out should you be unfortunate enough to become stuck!
Advance tickets are only £10 (£15 on the day) and can be purchased at the same time as your half-price advance tickets for entry to the Great British Land Rover Show. Advance booking is highly recommended to avoid disappointment and to be able to select your preferred start time around the course.
Land Rover Clubs Area – sponsored by Paddock Spares Clubs are the lifeblood of the Land Rover scene. And once again, we are offering clubs free space – allowing you to come and promote your club, attracting new members from the thousands of visitors to the Great British Land Rover Show! The club section of the show, sponsored by Paddock Spares, has limited capacity and all spaces are available on a first come basis. All clubs with a club stand at the show will receive: • Enough space for two vehicles along with 4 exhibitor passes • A listing on the show website An exclusive link, in conjunction with Paddock Spares, for your club members to buy advance tickets at only £5 each! And it’s not too late for clubs to get involved. Contact Ian Argent on 01283 553242 or email ian.argent@assignment-media.co.uk to register for your club stand – but don’t forget, it’s first come, first served!
Adventure and Outdoor Leisure Zone Returning for the 2021 show, Adventure and Outdoor Leisure Zone within the show is all about making the most of your Land Rover’s ability to take you anywhere around the world. Within the Adventure and Outdoor Leisure Zone, you’ll find exhibitors retailing everything from roof tents and camping equipment to specialist expedition kit for your vehicle. This is the place to come for off-road tour operators, too – be it tag-along trips on UK green lanes or three-week overland adventures around Europe and beyond.
Land Rover Line Up – sponsored by BFGoodrich Also returning for 2021 is our brilliant line-up of special Land Rovers, which always provides a breathtaking entry point to the show. It’s different every time, so who knows what you’ll see this year – though you can certainly be sure that these Land Rovers will set your pulse racing!
Land Rover Only Parking Areas Arriving in your Land Rover? Of course you are! As befits such an elevated marque, you will be directed to park in one of our special Land Rover Only parking areas – they’re like an exhibit in their own right!

h ori inal no n han r or almost four decades, BFGoodrich has been the name behind the Mud-Terrain. In 2018 the company launched its latest-generation Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 – the third-generation version of a tyre which has become a ‘Hoover’ brand in the world of off-roading. With the arrival of the KM3, BFG says it has ‘introduced technologies that further improve climbing, traction
F
and toughness in the mud and over rock.’ The company promises a 5% improvement in traction on soft ground compared to the old KM2, thanks to ‘mud-phobic’ bars on the tyre’s shoulders which aid self-cleaning by ejecting compacted material. They’re aided in this by the tyre’s Terrain-Attack tread pattern, whose large blocks are designed to grip on to hard ground, or bite into softer surfaces, whatever the angle of approach. BFG says the tyre’s compound makes it 8% more effective than the KM2 over rocks, with a ‘Linear Flex one’ designed to wrap around hard surfaces when running at low pressures. Performance over muddy and rocky surfaces is aided by notches in the tyre’s shoulders, which flow down into a Traction-Armor Sidewall Sculpture whose reinforced structure helps

prevent damage to the most vulnerable part of the carcass. The sidewalls themselves are now an astonishing 27% tougher than the previous model’s, thanks to BF ’s Core ard Max technology – as used on its Baja T/A KR3 desert-racing tyres – which helps prevent splitting or puncturing, with increased thickness to protect the ‘critical sidewall failure one.’ BF oodrich says the KM3 ‘was designed to conquer the toughest offroad challenges with extreme sidewall protection, pinch shock resistance and chip-and-tear resistance on gravel.’ But just as importantly, it also offers ‘solid street performance and acceptable on-road noise levels for the drives to and from the trail.’ The Mud-Terrain has always been famous for its road manners, and in KM3 form it’s a better all-rounder as ever. ‘The KM3 tyre is designed for extreme toughness and traction and is essential equipment for serious off-road enthusiasts,’ says BF general manager Harold Phillips. ‘Whether simply driving for off-road fun, or the extreme capability to access outdoor activities, this tyre was made to take drivers anywhere they want to go.’ The KM3 is available in a comprehensive range of no less than 54 different sizes to suit rims from 14” all the way up to 20 . the world. The unique design means that all of the load weight it transferred through the arm and directly into the crossmember, meaning the door and its hinges are not damaged. Unlike some others on the market, the ORE wheel carrier features high-strength German bearings (as opposed to plastic bushes) and is fully serviceable via a grease nipple. No drilling is required to install, providing your vehicle’s rear door and chassis are original.
• Wheel Carrier: ORE has designed and developed a swing-away spare wheel carrier for the Land Rover Defender which has been very well received on the market and sold across
• Steering Guard: ORE’s first product was the Defender Steering Guard. This is a rigid steel structure providing vital protection to the steering components
stablished in 2017 and rapidly expanding, ORE4x4 UK has disrupted the Land Rover Defender accessory market with a range of zero-compromise products – all of which are designed and developed in Britain. • Powder Coating: The team from ORE4x4 has been working in close cooperation with researchers from the University of Derbyshire to test and develop a bespoke, ultra-tough new OREsome Powder Coating System. This has similar properties to tank armour coating, meaning you can rely on it to protect your Defender against even the toughest of off-road adventures! The super-strong OREsome coating has passed a 1000-hour salt-spray test – compared to the industry standard of around 250 hours. So like all of ORE4x4’s products you can be sure it’s built to last!

la erchi dda ar a a d ver rie dl ase r id- elsh gree la e adve t res A S WA S and if you look hard enough, you’ll find a place that provides the ideal oasis for a green laning vacation. Perched upon a Carmarthenshire hillside is Llanerchindda Farm, a serene bed and breakfast which has become a popular spot for Land Rover fans seeking adventures on the MidWales rights of way.
It’s run by Martin and Lynne Hadley, with the help of their sons Mark and Andrew. The family successfully ran a hotel in the Lake District prior to their transition into Wales, and their welcoming hospitality is plain to see – and taste! Staying for a night or two should give you ample opportunity to sample Lynne and Mark’s culinary expertise.
The other half of the team, Martin and Andrew, together oversee the front of house, aiming to make your stay as memorable as possible. On the laning front, annotated maps, sat-navs or even a local to guide you on your way are all readily available throughout your visit. The Hadleys know their stuff as well, being avid supporters of GLASS and Treadlightly. With an abundance of local lanes to keep you coming back again, Llanerchindda has plenty of accommodation options for when you finally have to stop for the day. One of the favoured choices should be the on-site cottage which is perfect for anyone planning a group green laning holiday to the area. Whether it’s famous lanes like Strata Florida, Soar y Mynydd or Lower Claerwen, or the many dozens of less well known trails within the stunning countryside, there’s enough laning in Mid-Wales to keep you coming back time after time. And that’s what many people do – and they keep coming back to Llanerchindda Farm..

operates a Land Rover Defender hearse which is available for hire by independent funeral directors. The vehicle, a Td5-engined 110, was fully converted for its new role by the company’s owner, Peter Davies, whose experience with Land Rovers stretches back to 1992. Peter also worked alongside hearse coachbuilder Coleman Milne while employed as a fleet engineer with a national funeral service, giving him valuable knowledge that he put to good use while rebuilding the 110. He chose a Td5 instead of a Tdi as the latter tends to give off a puff of smoke on start-up, something he felt wouldn’t be appropriate for a hearse. While building the vehicle, Peter spent a lot of time on ensuring the bodywork and
paint were as close as possible to perfect. He used stainless button-head bolts to create the appearance of polished rivets – a gleaming touch which ties in well with the chrome and polished wood inside. The long one-piece side windows were made to order and fitted within their own metal frames to prevent them from cracking if the family’s wishes include, for example,
an off-road tour of their relative’s land en route to the crematorium. So far, One Life Lived It has been engaged for nearly 100 funerals. Its Land Rover has been used for services all around the country and is in constant demand; to find out more, visit onelifelivedit.com.

ith Defender values skyrocketing and their owners feeling all precious about getting them dirty, the Discovery 2 now has a lot of appeal. It’s relatively easy to work on, comfortable, capable and affordable. Land Rover directed a lot of its effort into improving the road manners of the D2 over its predecessor, to such an extent that some of its off-road credentials were compromised. This has provided the development team at Terrafirma with the perfect opportunity to enhance its off-road performance with not just the target of matching a well set up Defender, but also to create a brand new look.
A huge amount of work has gone into developing Terrafirma’s new ‘Raid’ style winch bumper, with improved approach angle, good protection and light weight. The tubular construction and infill panels with swaged holes are inspired by rally raid designs that have evolved to be lightweight and super strong. The matching rear bumper will accept the original tail lights and can incorporate standard towing equipment as well as Terrafirma receiver hitches. There is also provision for a swingaway spare wheel carrier on one side and a swing away jerry can/shovel and high-lift jack carrier on the other. Both bumpers are fitted with swivel recovery points. To compliment the
Raid bumpers, a new set of rock sliders keep obstacles away from the bodywork. To follow a Defender through the rocks, a brand new set of +5” travel 8-Stage Adjustable Remote Reservoir shocks have been specified which when fitted can enable the D2 to flex with the best. Add front and rear hydraulic bump stops and you can tackle obstacles in full attack mode. For something less extreme, the +3” 4-Stage Adjustable Shocks give four levels of damping from comfort through to sport, while significantly increasing wheel travel. To optimise these set-ups, a full range of associated hardware including
watts linkages, caster correction bushes, dislocation cones, anti-roll bar links, RTC steering damper fitting kit, extended turrets and crossmember spacers ensure your D2 will perform correctly both off and on-road. To avoid rubbing, 265/75R16 is the ideal tyre size for a Discovery 2 with these additions. To fit one on the back door, you will need the new Terrafirma spare wheel mount. No longer exclusive to Defender owners, Terrafirma’s wavy CD brake discs are now available for the D2. Significantly improved braking can be experienced when combined these with Performance brake pads and 2” or 5” long stainless brake hoses.
Terrafirma’s Discovery 2 raised air intake is another brand new product bringing unique style and a reversable ram air intake made from high grade UV and temperature stable rotational moulded plastic. Terrafirma’s new range of Raid inspired accessories and long travel suspension set-ups will give your Discovery 2 a fantastic new look and incredible off-road capability. As with most Terrafirma accessories, minimal cutting or modifications are required for them to be fitted and they can all be installed by competent DIY mechanics. You can find it all at terrafirma4x4.com..

A Wolf in Shark’s Clothing Words: Olly Sack
The Defender XD Wolf is one of the most coveted Land Rovers. This one is extra special – it’s a rare Winter Water model from the Royal Marines, and it’s covered next to no miles ever t’s common knowledge that the Wolf is among the most desirable of all Defenders. With stronger axles and chassis, not to mention a 300 Tdi engine, the military XD model has everything that makes Land Rovers special – only more so. That desirability is particularly strong among people who want a Defender to be a Defender, however. If you want a workhorse that’s also a hobby, or something that’ll be the basis of a next-level off-road project, the only thing standing in your way is the inconvenient fact that they fetch strong prices whenever they come up. What they’re not, however, is classics. That will change over time, but
I
if the Wolf is collectible right now it’s as an Army vehicle rather than a historical Land Rover. There are, however, a few more specialised examples whose rarity makes them worthy of note – and what you’re looking at here is perhaps the definitive example. For starters, it’s a rarity because it’s a 90 XD Winterised/Waterproofed. Created for the Royal Marines as a vehicle for beach landings and amphibious assaults, a total of 686 were built – as the name suggests, to cope with particularly deep wading and the sort of low temperatures that would confound a standard Land Rover. By this, we mean -46°C. You might think Salisbury Plain on a bleak Sunday
in January is as cold as the world can become, but this is on another level. To cope, Winterised versions of the Wolf were equipped with special radiators and pre-heaters for the fuel and other engine fluids. There was an auxiliary heater for the rear cabin, similar in appearance to the warm air blowers you used to get in railway carriages (the difference being that on the Wolf, they actually worked), but the driver and front passenger didn’t get anything more than a simple heated windscreen to keep them happy. Well, that and the Defender’s famously effective standard heating system, obviously. They were Marines, though, so they laughed at stuff like that.

Even the toughest nuts in the Army might shudder at the prospect of deep wading in the sort of water temperatures that go with a climate knocking on for fifty below. And this version of the Wolf was equipped to do it at a depth of up to 1.5 metres. Five feet, in other words. There are snorkels, and there’s the snorkel on this thing. If necessary, in the space of about an hour the Waterproofed Wolf could be prepared to operate while completely submerged. Obviously, once the driver’s head was under the surface he would have no way of knowing how close it was coming to the air intake somewhere above him, and there’s also the small matter of being able to breathe, but for short bursts of action the capability was certainly there. Another interesting feature of these Defenders is that they were built with struts to keep their tailgate down during wading. This was to let water flow in to the back body, thus preventing it from floating away, and also to let it pour back out again as quickly as possible once reaching land. Hard-top models were fitted with an escape hatch about the driver’s and passenger’s seats. Preventing the engine from sucking in water and suffering a catastrophic hydraulic lock is the most critical matter when you’re wading a vehicle, but protecting it long-term is every bit as important. Hence the use of grease

and a graphite lubricant on almost every moving part; the idea was that these Land Rovers could be used in salt water as effectively as fresh, so they really were prepared to endure the harshest of environments. The vehicles were proven in trials carried out by the Marines’ Amphibious Trials and Testing Unit in the Arctic Circle and at Instow in Devon – where the actual vehicle seen here was photographed in action during its early life. Having been built for such a specialised purpose, it never became
one of those Land Rovers you see plugging up and down the motorway in convoy but was instead transported between its base and the various exercises in which it was involved. The result was that when it was disposed of by the MOD, it had covered a sum total of 1159 kilometres (720 miles). This was in 2017, when it was bought by owners in Norfolk who gave it a light restoration, sorted out a few small issues pointed up by its first ever MOT test and set about having some fun with it along the nearby

coast. Three years later, the clock was showing a comparatively massive 3300 miles and it was time to do what everybody did last year and set about giving the Defender a full rebuild. This was done by Archimedes Engineering Solutions in Dereham, whose owner is a former service

manager and chief mechanic from Mann Egerton Land Rover in Kings Lynn. And it was the real thing – a full, 100% nut and bolt rebuild which saw the Wolf returned to its brand new condition. Or better? Who knows? It hadn’t been trialled in the English Channel by then…

Not that it shows any signs of the abuse that was meted out to these Defenders in the Army. A full resto tends to do that, of course, but even then this is a remarkably low-mileage Landy; having first seen the light of day in 1999, at the last MOT in July this year it was showing just 5234 miles. And this is a 300 Tdi. These engines are nowhere near run in by then, and this one’s already been restored twice. If it wasn’t such a rare and precious piece of Solihull heritage, you could mod it up however you wanted and it would be perfectly set to be your forever Land Rover. ‘She drives beautifully,’ in the words of Mark, its owner since it was demobbed. ‘Better in fact than my 63reg 2.2!’ If you know your Wolf 90s and 110s, and your Pumas, this won’t come as any surprise. As we said at the top, the Wolf’s desirability is greatest among buyers who want a Defender to be a Defender. If you like Land Rovers to be truly classic, a nice Lightweight might be more of your thing. But this is not just a Wolf. There are great Land Rovers, and there are classic Land Rovers, and each can be a wonderful thing. But this one is a bit (a lot, actually) of both, and even after two restos it’s still practically brand new. It’s a rarity, a special model and a timewarp classic on tiny miles – it ticks all the boxes. AND it’s a brilliant example of what many people say is the best truck Land Rover ever made. So is it a Wolf in shark’s clothing, or one wearing the more traditional woolly coat? It’s a cross between the two, and more than the sum of its parts. And wolf, sheep, shark or hybrid of all three, it’s a very rare breed of animal indeed.

Siren call The 116-inch Mk1 Discovery Ambulance is a very rare beast, with only about 15 ever made. It was a lifesaver in its day – and now the original prototype is in search of a new owner to help it get its life back on track too
hen you think of overland conversions based on Land Rover ambulances, your mind is likely to go straight to the 127 or 130. There have been all sorts of ambulance builds based on the longest Defenders, both civilian and military, which lend themselves perfectly to expedition use once their original job is done.
W
Words: Gary Martin Pictures: Peter Sawford You might also think about the 101, a long list of 109s or any of the remarkable number of converters to have got their hands on the original Range Rover. But would the Mk1 Discovery cross your mind? It’s unlikely. That’s because only about 15 were ever made. But they did see an active life, having first been exhibited at the Emergency Services
Show (Ambex, as it was known back then) in August 1991. The Discovery Ambulance was made in 3-door and 5-door form, with the former being the model first shown in prototype form. And this is that prototype. It went on to become one of around six Discos to be operated by Northumberland Ambulance Service before being sold off when the fleet
was renewed, and has since then been through a number of private hands. That number is soon to grow, as its current owner Peter Sawford is looking to move it on. ‘I have owned it since the end of 2019,’ he explains, ‘with the ambition of turning it into an overland camper. However life somewhat got in the way and as a result I have only put about 600 miles on it.’
This appears to have been something of a theme among the people who have owned the vehicle since it left the ambulance service. In 2011, a well known Discovery enthusiast from Devon called Neil Witt posted a video on YouTube showing the vehicle in its original livery, complete with functioning twos and blues, with a caption saying it was
Having been used at shows, this prototype vehicle was the only one with the Land Rover logo frosted into its offside rear window. You can see where its blue lights used to be – but no blue interior? Missed opportunity, surely…

destined to be turned into a camper – but here it is, a decade on, still destined to be turned into a camper. Or whatever else someone wants to turn it into. Talking of turning it into something, the Discovery Ambulance wasn’t built the way it ended up. Land Rover Special Vehicles (the same part of the business responsible for, among other things, turning the 110 into the 127 and turning the 90 into, well, the 90 SV) took them off the production line, ran a grinder up the middle of them and welded in an extra 16” of mild steel to create a Disco with a 116” wheelbase. Just a very slightly simplified version of the story, there… Up top, at least in the case of this 3-door model, the extra length in the wheelbase was taken up by extending the body behind the doors and inserting a much longer window between the B and C-posts. The result was a large treatment area in the back, which was further stretched in the upwards direction by adding the distinctive high roof which also carried high-level blue beacons. Extra tall safari windows are a nice hat-tip to the design of the original Discovery here, too. Following its appearance at Ambex in 1991, the Discovery was registered for the road as Land Rover readied it for the world of work. As the original demonstrator and show car, however, it has one feature which makes it distinctive – the Land Rover logo frosted into the offside rear window. When Neil Witt sold Badger, as he had decided to name the vehicle, the website Land Rover Katy quotes him as noting that it was the only one with this feature. To bring the story up to date, in Peter’s hands the Discovery has done little – though by no means has it been neglected. ‘I have had the bodywork professionally refurbished as it was in a very poor state,’ he explains. ‘And the outside has been covered in a Raptor style coating.’ On the inside, the rear has been extensively insulated and lined with plywood as step one on the road to becoming a

camper. The springs and shocks have been replaced with heavy-duty units, too. The result is what Peter describes as ‘a blank canvas ready to be made into something that you can be sure no one else will have!’ This is one reason why, although £14,995 might sound like a lot of money for a first-generation Discovery, for the right buyer it will actually be a lot of truck for their money. Another, and this should make you sit up and take notice, is that it has only ever covered 39,500 miles. With less than 10,000 of these having been in the last 15 years, this is clearly a Discovery that’s seen very little life. Its MOT history is not unblemished, but it’s clear that most of those miles were put on during its time as a working ambulance – when it would have been getting all the services, and oil changes, that a Land Rover could ever ask for. To translate, it might be three decades old – but its 200 Tdi engine is hardly even run in.
All these years after passing into private ownership, you get the sense that this is a Landy still waiting to find its forever home. And there are of course all the usual elephants in the room when you come to buy a Mk1 Discovery. But any Land Rover enthusiast will look at this vehicle and see the opportunities in it. To create your dream overlander, to restore a classic piece of Solihull history – or just to own something totally unique. If nothing else, with the keys to this bad boy in your pocket there’s no way you’re going to be the sad case wandering around outside Tesco trying to remember where he parked his car. And the height of that roof is your personal passport out of ever having to do anything that involves going into a multi-storey. As Peter says, it’s a blank canvas – the ways in which this Land Rover could enrich your life really are endless. You’ll find it in the classified section towards the back of this issue.
Rare to find undamaged, this as-new part fits straight on. Same finish, profile and mounts as the Lode Lane original part.

The Landy Buyer
All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy
Before the Defender
A
s we all know, the thing everyong calls the Defender only got that name in 1990. Before that it was just the 90, or the 110, or the 127. And, more importantly, it had an engine from the days before the Tdi.
Most of these pre-Defenders have long since had at least some sort of major work done to them – with engine conversions being among the most common of the lot. If you’ve got one that’s still on its original lump, you’re driving a fully fledged classic.
Series I (1948-1958)
The Series I, particularly in its 80 guise, is the most sought-after of
all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands
Series III (1971-1985)
The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical
terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular
Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands
90/110 (1983-1990)
This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can
also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.
You’re also driving a capable everyday truck, however. Which is why you still see people using older 90s and 110s the right way, even if that means enduring an engine from another age. Obviously, if you’ve got an original 8 you’re sitting on treasure. The early 2.25 and 2.5 petrol models are incredibly rare now, which leaves the 2.5 diesel. In nat-asp form, it’s slow but reliable; with a turbo, the good news is that if it’s still
£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s
£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models
£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A ’ ’ E over regular models means they command a price premium
£2500-£19,000 A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: E E U potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition
Insure a 2.5 TD 90 with Adrian Flux from £125
alive, it’s probably alright. Either way, it’s your daily drive – but it’s also a very special vehicle indeed.
• Based on a 1988 2.5 TD 90 Station Wagon with no mo i ations Valued at £8500, limited to 10,000 miles a year. 50 year old driver, fully comp, excess of £150.
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
£2500-£40,000
much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88 would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of
refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing
Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)
£2500-£15,000
The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries
Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real
rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by
101 (1972-1978)
Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when
£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its 8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which

£7500-£25,000 took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a 127 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 127 is more of an enthusiast’s
motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: E limitless potential and character Cons: U S had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£29,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)
The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for
decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 300. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.
Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)
The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though
the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve
Defender TDCi (2007-2016)
The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and
smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been
The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R380, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around

130 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked 8.
become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road… Pros: Strength and simplicity. P D Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory

As a result, you’ll find many more original(ish) 130s than 127s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further. Pros: A proper truck with huge capabilities in every area Cons: I ’ ’ actually need that much size

a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis. Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can
still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles

to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,
making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value the way an original-shaper does, either. Be in no doubt, though – this is a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks ’

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)
The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.
It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much
£400-£5500 more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a
bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SU to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: R , , economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing
Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £5000-£85,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000
The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there
are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.
Range Rover L322 (2002-12)
The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-
liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TD 8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The 8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…
RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)
The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s
a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SU . A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.
RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)
When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting
the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and
An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models
£2250-£28,000
A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to
own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t
Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £27,000-£220,000
This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)
You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. E
£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with 4WD. Pros: E , , concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport
The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,
Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger elar. Discovery 2 (1998-2004)
The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most
most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the 8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat
Discovery 5 (2017-on)
The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at
launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very
£1100-£9000 models had air-suspension, with all the horrors that brings. Mainly, D2 owners will tell you about rogue electronics. And leaky sunroofs. £25,600-£80,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery… Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery
Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)
The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road
and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area. The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always
Discovery Sport (2015-19)
The Discovery Sport packs seven seats into a Freelander-sized
body and dishes up an appealing all-round blend of comfort, kit and general driving manners. The third row of seats is only suitable for little ‘uns, though, and off-road it’s a Discovery in name only. It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque, and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes. You

£2950-£38,000 be maintenance costs – infamously, the timing belt is a body-off job, and rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too. Pros: All-round ability, stunning practicality, luxury and kit on high-speccers Cons: Cam belts, handbrakes air suspension… the list goes on
£15,000-£35,000 might shudder at the price if you’re buying new, though – but on the used market, there are some tidy looking deals to be had, even on high-spec examples. Pros: More practical than an E , S seats. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models
£21,000-£52,000 The Disco Sport is a premium medium-si ed SU . It’s available with seven seats and, by the standards of the competition, models with four-wheel drive offer a decent level of off-road ability. It’s a massively popular choice
for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid early last year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of
excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing pre-
mium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models
