Land Rover and Red Cross turn Defender 110 into Britain’s smallest museum

REGULAR READERS OF THE LANDY WILL KNOW that this year, Land Rover has been celebrating the 70th anniversary of its association with the British Red Cross. There’s a lot of history there – and the company has come up with an ingenious way of putting it in the public eye. Working together with the Red Cross, Land Rover has commissioned the creation of what is believed to be Britain’s smallest museum. This is housed in a specially converted Defender 110 plug-in hybrid containing a variety of artefacts, photographs and audio guides, which ‘brings to life the humanitarian work delivered from 1954 to the present day.’ Land Rover estimates that during the history to date of its partnership with the Red Cross, 500-plus vehicles have played a role in assisting some two million people in more than fifty nations. The mobile museum, which is free to visit, ‘tells the story of 70 years of supporting communities in crisis around the world.’ Up to five visitors at a time can fit inside the vehicle (the pandemic is definitely over, isn’t it?), while many more view a timeline of pictures on its side panels – as well as examples of

equipment used by the Red Cross on its roof rack. This all covers the history of the partnership over the course of its 70 years, which includes multiple locations, conflicts and disasters. The experience for visitors even includes a guided tour, bringing out key moments in Land Rover’s partnership with the Red Cross. This includes one of its first missions in 1954, which saw four nurses visit remote communities in Kenya aboard Defender (sic) ambulances that had been specially adapted to serve as mobile clinics. Further exhibits include the British Red Cross’ humanitarian work in Ethiopia between 1978 and 1980, during a famine caused by a devastating drought followed by a plague of locusts. A medical kit from that time features in the museum. Also on display are drawings from children caught up in the conflict in former Yugoslavia – where, throughout 1993, the Red Cross provided aid and care for those seeking sanctuary. The museum also features artefacts from a series of major floods in the UK between 2007 and 2013, when Red Cross volunteers came from across the UK to assist in the largest domestic emergency relief effort since

the Second World War. Also in the UK, albeit an overseas territory, the museum explores the relief provided in the Turks and Caicos Islands after first Hurricane Hanna and then Hurricane Ike destroyed 85% of homes there in 2008 and 2009. The Defender even houses a statue of a rescue dog from the REDOG programme in Switzerland – a search and rescue project which trains search dogs and rapid deployment teams, a team of whom was deployed to help with search and rescue efforts following lat year’s earthquake in Turkey. The statue was donated by its creator, sculptor Tanya Russell. The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted above that the Defender is only ‘believed’ to be Britain’s smallest museum. Land Rover points out that ‘while a museum created in a phone box in Warley has previously claimed to be the smallest, we have verified that it is no longer open to the public.’ There is also the Gallery on the Green, an art gallery located in a phone box in Settle, North Yorkshire, however with ever-changing exhibitions that’s different to a museum – and, smallest or otherwise, anything housed in a Land Rover gets our vote.

£500,000 transormation for Halewood factory

DA5502 Heavy Duty Steering Bars 90/110 £99.00 incl VAT

JLR’S HALEWOOD PLANT, which was originally built in 1963 to produce the Ford Anglia, is well on the way to becoming the ‘factory of the future.’ The Merseyside complex, which is currently home to Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque production, is midway through a £500 million transformation which will put it at the heart of the company’s operations in the electric era. The first part of the development, which is already complete, has seen more than £250 million invested in new production lines, machinery, people and digital technology. As the programme continues towards completion in the coming years, Halewood will be able to accommodate the parallel production of internal combustion, hybrid and pure electric vehicles – while an ongoing focus on renewables, fuel switching and energy reduction will lead to the removal of 40,000 tonnes of CO2 or the equivalent from its industrial footprint. Work so far has included a major construction project, extending the site by 32,364 square metres to produce medium-sized electric SUVs on JLR’s new EMA platform. The new building has been fitted with new EV build lines, 750 autonomous robots, ADAS calibration rigs, laser alignment technology for perfect part fitment and the latest cloud based digital plant management systems to oversee production. They don’t mention anything about people with spanners, however as part of the plant’s modernisation more than 1600 employees have been given High Voltage training, enabling them to work on battery assembly.

Further elements of the factory’s transformation include the creation of a new body shop, capable of producing 500 vehicle bodies per day, and an automated storage tower capable of holding 600 painted vehicle bodies at any time. Almost a mile of the paint shop itself has been modified, with the expansion of ovens and conveyors in response to increased demand for contrasting roofs on vehicles, and individual build stations have been extended to seven metres to facilitate the different proportions of the new EMA electric vehicles. Said stations are also now equipped with 40 new Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), which have been introduced to assist employees with the fitment of high-voltage batteries in electric vehicles. Concomitantly to this, the final production line in the plant has been increased in length from four to six kilometres.

In addition, £16 million worth of equipment from JLR’s Castle Bromwich site, ranging from assembly robots to automated guided vehicles, has been integrated for reuse at the new facility. This modernisation is part of JLR’s strategy for becoming carbon neutral by 2039. It plans to instal 18,000 solar panels around Halewood, equating to 10% of the site’s energy consumption. Additionally, the company is investing £20 million a year on training, allowing employees across all its sites to gain the skills needed to work in the automotive industry of the future. ‘Halewood will be our first all-electric production facility,’ says JLR’s Executive Director of Industrial Operations Barbara Bergmeier. ’It is a testament to the brilliant efforts by our teams and suppliers who have worked together to equip the plant with the technology needed to deliver our world class luxury electric vehicles.’

Land Rover support helps equal opportunities charity in the West Midlands LAND ROVER HAS MADE A SECOND ANNUAL AWARD of £30,000 to the Amos Bursary, a charity which supports educational and career opportunities for young people from African and Caribbean backgrounds. Bringing the company’s total support to date to £60,000, the funding will help 70 students from the West Midlands as they take the first steps into the workplace. The Amos Bursary charity is dedicated to helping students develop their careers and overcome challenges that could hinder their potential by providing comprehensive assistance for high-performing Year 12 students, selected based on academic achievement and socio-economic criteria. It provides annual financial assistance for educational resources and tuition, as well as emergency support, and personal and professional development opportunities through mentorships, internships and other career-enhancing programmes. Tacitly recognising the ugly truth that good people continue to be held back in their careers because of the colour of their skin, the scheme gains JLR’s support as part of its wider efforts to promote inclusivity in the workplace.

In addition to financially supporting Amos Bursary, JLR staff have been supporting the charity by delivering more than 390 hours of mentorship, internships and workshop training to help prepare students for success in the corporate setting. The company says it ‘invests in diverse talent to build careers in electrical and software engineering, digital and data roles and autonomous technologies, as part of its Reimagine strategy to reach carbon net zero by 2039,’ and since last year its school partnership programme has already supported some 40,000 UK students. To mark the first anniversary of the partnership, JLR recently welcomed 39 students who have benefited from the grant to visit its Gaydon facility. The event provided the students with insights into the automotive industry and the increasing diversity of roles becoming available at JLR as the company embraces electric propulsion. One of JLR’s Software Degree apprentices, Reuben Cumberbatch, joined the Amos Bursary programme after completing his GCSEs. ‘The workshops and mentorship have been incredibly valuable,’ he says. ‘They

not only helped me build the soft skills needed for the corporate world but also gave me the confidence to navigate professional environments. ‘My advice to upcoming professionals is to take full advantage of these opportunities and always be open to learning

and networking. These are instrumental in shaping your career and opening doors to new possibilities.’ More than 850 apprentices and undergraduates will join JLR this year, in fields such as Engineering, HR, Design, Commercial and Manufacturing.

By renewing its support for the Amos Bursary, the company is strengthening its commitment to ensuring its new employees are from a diverse talent pool – and that the environment they join allows them to flourish without fear of discrimination.

Car factories really matter to society

Issue 133: Dec 2024

7

Y

ou might well snort with derision at the news of a £500 million investment programme to turn Land Rover’s Halewood facility into a modern manufacturing plant for the EV age. Not so much, though, if you’re one of the many people whose careers are being secured by the factory’s big-money transformation. Car plants being moved abroad is always a contentious issue. You don’t have to look very far on social media to find someone guffing on about how they were all set to buy an Ineos Grenadier but they they moved the factory from Wales to France so now they’re not going to, because Union Jacks and warm beer, and now they’re going to buy a new Defender instead. It’s hardly worth pointing out that the new Defender is made in Slovakia when someone thinks like that, but the point is worth considering. When a car maker breaks ground on a new factory, it’s a massive deal for the region where it’s going to be located. And when a car maker leaves, it leaves a devastated region behind – look at the closure of Linwood in the early 80s, the much more recent loss of Swindon’s Honda plant and, of course, the Longbridge debacle a couple of decades ago. It’s not just the manufacturers themselves that matter to the local economy. People tend not to realise just how many suppliers you’ll get clustered around the factories, and these can be major employers too – multinational corporations in their own right in some cases, at times building ‘components’ that might include something like the entire interior of a vehicle. So JLR’s investment in Halewood is something to celebrate, because it’s an investment in a region that’s been at the heart of the British car industry since Ford built a factory there to build the 105e Anglia more than 60 years ago. It will ultimately cease to make vehicles with internal combustion engines, which is sad on some levels, but it means the facility will live on rather than dying with the old technology – and surely, even if you hate EVs, that is something for which Land Rover should be applauded. URBAN AUTOMOTIVE HAS LIFTED THE WRAPS on a one-off Range Rover Sport built as a homage to the first vehicle it created based on the original SVR model. This is fitted with the company’s latest Widetrack body kit and painted in the distinctive Estoril Blue that was an SVR signature – but which is no longer offered by Land Rover on the new-shape vehicle. Further accessories added to the vehicle include a bespoke Cirrus quilted interior and satin gold wheels from Vossen in Miami.

If you like the look of the vehicle, Urban’s Widetrack kit is available commercially. It includes wide arches, a carbon fibre bonnet and upper grille with Urban branding, as well as an upper rear spoiler, a carbon fibre bumper and a rear diffuser with a removable skid pan, plus aluminium exhaust finishers. For a more retrained look, Urban has also launched a Narrowbody kit. This features full replacement carbon fibre bumpers at the front and rear, along with carbon fibre side skirts. In

Once again, you also get aluminium exhaust finishers – though in each case, a full Milltek Sport performance exhaust system is available on the options list. Other options include 23” and 24” cast or forged alloy wheels. It all depends how much you want to spend on making your Range Rover Sport looking like this – talking of which, prices start at £25,000.

£350 plus VAT rimmerbros.com SERIES TRUCKS MAY HAVE PASSED INTO THE REALMS OF THE CLASSIC, but people are still using them for work and play – sometimes even as dailies. Which almost always means doing something about the original seats. Made by Exmoor Trim, these traditional-style Deluxe seats follow the design of those used throughout Series III production. They have the distinctive sculptured styling, with face fluting running from front to back in the centre panels, and come trimmed in black vinyl. The outer seat backs bolt in and have internal threads for the locking positions, while the centre seat back mounts with a pint type fitting. The outer bases and centre bases sit into the seat frames and are removable to allow access to the seat box compartments. The seat backs are supplied with new pivot bolts, nylon washers and locking bolts. Leather retaining straps are available separately, and the seats can be had individually as backs or bases on their own – however at the clearance price currently being offered by Rimmer Bros, a full set has never looked like a better investment.

Make everything lighter – apart from your wallet Price: £388.35 Available from: maltings4x4store.co.uk, TF8012KIT YOU CAN SPEND FEARSOME AMOUNTS OF MONEY ON LED LIGHTING, but more and more options are coming along to help you see the way ahead and still be able to afford the diesel to get you there. Terrafirma’s T Slot Roof Rack Light Bar and Spot Light Kit, for example, gives you four spotlights brackets and two light bar brakets – AND the lights to go with them. Designed to mount via T-slots in Terrafirma’s own roof rack for the new-shape Defender, the brackets require no drilling and come with a fitting kit and instructions. You also get the same company’s Single Row LED 18 Inch Cree LED Light, a high-performance bar whose flood beam pattern gives it a wide range of illumination. And that’s not all. Dig further into the box and you’ll find Terrafirma’s Compact 3000 Lumen 4 LED Shooter Spot Light Set. These are small but powerful, producing 3000 Lumens from

an array of eight 5-Watt LEDs – four facing forward plus two on either side for a wide spread of light. These only draw 2.8 amps, so that’s a lot of light for a little input.

Toughness is built in to both these light units, with the spots being IP69K rated – meaning you can actually pressure wash them without any water finding its way in. Their aliminium housings are waterproof and weather-resistant, and coated with a UV-resistant paint to prevent chipping and fading, and their 3mm Lexan lens promise to be unbreakable and scratch-resistant. Similarly, the light bar has a die-cast alloy housing, stainless steel mounting brackets and a polycarbonate lens. So that’s a whole lot of illumination there – plus no small amount of longevity.

The right home for your recovery boards Price: £163.21 Available from: maltings4x4store.co.uk, TF8016KIT SAND TRACKS, BRIDGING LADDERS, WAFFLE BOARDS… whatever your specific choice in traction aids, one thing is for certain – it’s not until you try to carry them inside your Land Rover that you realise how big they are. Maltings 4x4 has the answer in the form of this kit, which includes a set of Terrafirma’s Semi-Rigid Nylon

Recovery Boards plus the mounts you need to fit them. The latter uses a T-slot system which lets you carry them either upright or lying down, whichever you prefer. The recovery boards themselves are designed for easy handling and extreme toughness, promising the resistance to damage that you’re going to need from them. They provide flotation

when in use, helping prevent your tyres from sinking and giving them the increased grip to help get you unstuck – or, as any off-roading know-it-all will no doubt tell you, to let you avoid getting stuck in the first place. The boards are 1210mm long, 325mm wide and 60mm thick and have deep moulded slots and ridges with a textured surface, as well as grab handles and recesses on each side – allowing them to be used to shovel away loose material such as sand and snow. So that’s serious kit and a serious size – you can see why you would want to carry them on the outside of your truck. Which is exactly what this kit lets you do!

Why Land Rover drivers keep flocking to Llanerchindda

Cynghordy Llandovery Carmarthenshire, SA20 0NB Tel: 01550 750274 e-mail: info@cambrianway.com

HEAD INTO DEEPEST WALES and if you look hard enough, you’ll find a place that provides the ideal oasis for a green laning vacation. Perched upon a Carmarthenshire hillside is Llanerchindda Farm, a serene bed and breakfast which has become a popular spot for Land Rover fans seeking adventures on the Mid-Wales rights of way. It’s run by Martin and Lynne Hadley, with the help of their sons Mark and Andrew. The family successfully ran a hotel in the Lake District prior to their transition into Wales, and their welcoming hospitality is plain to see – and taste! Staying for a night or two should give you ample opportunity to sample Lynne and Mark’s culinary expertise. The other half of the team, Martin and Andrew, together oversee the front of house, aiming to make your stay as memorable as possible. On the laning front, annotated maps, sat-navs or even a local to guide you on your way are all readily available throughout your visit. The Hadleys know their stuff as well, being avid supporters of GLASS and Treadlightly. With an abundance of local lanes to keep you coming back again, Llanerchindda has plenty of accommodation options for when you finally have to stop for the day. One of the favoured choices should be the on-site cottage which is perfect for anyone planning a group green laning holiday to the area. Whether it’s famous lanes like Strata Florida or the many dozens of less well known trails within the stunning countryside, there’s enough laning in Mid-Wales to keep you coming back time after time. And that’s what many people do – and they keep coming back to Llanerchindda Farm..

One fine day

Issue 133: Dec 2024

15

Back in 1996, Sam and Nathalie Hughes came across a couple exploring Africa in a Land Rover. And they promised themselves that one day, they would have one of their own. And what a fine day it turned out to be Words and Pictures: Alan Kidd

O

ne day.’ It’s a phrase we all seem to spend most of our lives using, as we promise ourselves that we’ll dig the garden, paint the fence, visit that in-law, fix that rattle, experiment with swinging… What? That’s just me? Oops. You’ve said it, though. Over and over. One day I’ll win the lottery. One day I’ll do the Rubicon. One day I’m going to say take this job and shove it and just walk out that door and then they’ll see what it’s like to try and cope without me… Now, I know that one’s not just me. There comes a point in your life when saying ‘one day’ starts to sound a bit hollow, because you realise that in the greater scheme of things you don’t actually have all that many days left. But Sam Hughes still had time on his side when he made himself the promise that ended up yielding this very well sorted Land Rover Defender. Wind back the clock to 1996. Penalty shootout heartbreak against Germany, again. Hello Spice Girls, Ford Ka and The Simpsons. And Dolly the sheep. It was the year of the X-Files. A year when Charles and Di got divorced and a massive 4% of the population now had access to the internet. The year when Trainspotting came out. Feeling old? Sam certainly wasn’t when he went travelling in East Africa with his partner Nathalie. And with their whole lives ahead of them, they could dream big. So when they bumped into another couple at an overnight stop who were traversing the African continent in a Land Rover, they didn’t get jealous: they got inspired. ‘This was the catalyst for a pledge,’ says Sam. ’That one day we would own a Defender and embark on lots of adventures. Who knows, one day even return to tackle Africa once again.’ Some time has passed. Careers have happened (and still are happening), ditto family, and now here we are looking at Sam and Nathalie and they’re the ones whose Defender

Above left: A 12,500lb Terrafirma winch sits on the same company’s tapered heavy-duty bumper, providing all the pulling power Sam should ever need Above centre: For decades, Land Rovers travelled the world without rock sliders. Mind you, back then replacement doors didn’t cost about a million quid a pop Right: Masai’s light guards protect a set of upgraded headlamps Far right: When you’re going places where dust is the main feature of life beyond tarmac, a snorkel comes into its own. Yes, they protect your engine from the perils of deep water, but more importantly they gather up clean air from above the cloud of fine particles that’s constantly swirling around closer to the ground

will be inspiring others. It’s certainly inspiring their son Bobby, who intends to get himself a 90 and do an overland conversion of his own just as soon as he’s sorted with a driving licence. What the inspiration comes from is a 2014 Defender 110 XS Utility. Well into the 2.2 TDCi era, then, and being an XS it has the extensive luxuries of a range-topper like manual air-con, heated seats and a rear wash-wipe. Clearly, at least one of those can make

a big difference if you’re planning to go overlanding, even if the trucks that built the Land Rover legend had none. ‘Ruby,’ the 110 is affectionately known, arrived with the family as what Sam describes as ‘already a nice example of a 110 Utility.’ She looks pretty much drop-dead gorgeous in a coat of Montalcino Red and, on an altogether more practical level, she had already been fitted with premium slide-out draws and a storage locker. A

good start, clearly, with what Sam had in mind. And what was that? Well, here’s an interesting one. ‘We set about only adding what we actually need,’ Sam explains. ‘Having owned six motorhomes adorned with every conceivable luxury, the shift back towards minimalist, utility-based travel has been an interesting but rewarding challenge.’ Imagine what he’d be saying if he’d bought an old 109…

The Defender rides on 265/75R16 BFG All-Terrains wrapped around a set of steel modulars, which puts it on a sensible footing for long-range travel. Strong, tractable and hard-wearing tyres matter more than a killer tread pattern and, best of all, they’re standard in size. When you’re prepping for overland travel, you change what you must but nothing you don’t have to. Nobody ever crossed a continent and put it down to having 44” tyres and nitrous.

What Ruby does have is heavy-duty springs and shocks from Old Man Emu. No need for a lift, but the rears are 300kg constant load jobs specified with the weight of all that expedition kit in mind. Not that the front, where the springs are medium, is exactly lightweight either – a Terrafirma Pro tapered winch bumper and the same company’s 12,500lb winch see to that, as does the steel guard protecting the drag link.

We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk There’s a set of rock sliders further back, with tubular extensions for keeping trees at arm’s length, while the tops of the wings and bonnet are dressed in chequer plate to provide a step and the engine breathes through a raised air intake from Safari Snorkel. Nothing too extreme there, then – not so much a case of trying to make a vehicle something it’s not than making the most of what it is. You could add a lift, more armour, locking diffs, fancy trailing arms, blah blah blah, and no doubt there are people reading this who can’t believe Sam didn’t try to wring every last drop of horsepower out of the engine, but would any of these things have made it better? A good overlander is one that gets you home again, and there’s never been a better case for the KISS principle. That being the case, it’s as standard as it can be and no heavier than it has to be. Boxes ticked. And when it comes to living out of the thing… well, actually it’s not as extensively messed with here as you might imagine either. As always, there’s a conversation to be had about whether you’re going to be living out of it or, well, in it. For a while, roof tents were the only way to go, but more and more people now are moving towards pop-top conversions and turning their trucks into compact motorhomes. Sam does say that in the

Left: ARB’s Esperance roof tent opens on its own integrated gas struts – after which a telescopic ladder drops down for access. The highly featured unit gives you three zip-up ventilation units and a ‘stargazing moonroof,’ and its dry weight is a pleasingly slight 56kg Right: Also located on the roof rack is a set of 20-litre jerry cans from Front Runner and a collection of storage boxes from XS and Tentco, not to mention a 270-degree Speedwing awning

future, he might do a full Alu-Cab roof conversion and interior fit-out, but for now he’s kept it traditional, installing a full-length roof rack upon which lives an ARB Esperance tent. This is a thing with a story behind its name. Esperance is a town on the south coast of Australia, about 450 miles from Perth, and when you look at pictures of the place you basically want to go there and stay forever. Turquoise waters lapping beaches of pearly white sand where kangaroos bask in the sun – it’s that kind of vibe. A place for surfing, swimming, scuba diving and just generally loving life amid a landscape from a dream. That’s appropriate, too, because Sam is currently looking at moving the family to Australia for a spell while he takes up the offer of one of those work postings that make everybody else wish they had his job. The family don’t seem to mind, safe to say. This may be because he’s also looking at shipping the Defender out there too and having some proper adventures in it. Back to the tent. ARB designed it for quick and painless set-ups and break-downs, with an internal telescopic ladder, gas strut assisted opening and a closing mechanism using just three push-lock ratchet straps. They also gave it what they call a ‘stargazing

Ally floor in the back hides a deep drawer which pulls out to reveal all life’s cooking essentials. Another drop-down shelf on the rear door provides further kitchen space, then a huge stowage box inside looks big enough to sleep in

moonroof,’ as well as three zip-up windows with mesh screens to keep flying critters at bay. We mentioned weight earlier, and the Esperance tent adds 56kg dry. That doesn’t include the roof rack, but while it can’t help but affect the vehicle’s centre of gravity it’s only about the same as having a medium sized adult sitting up there. And less likely to get you arrested on the motorway (ARB says the tent will limit your top speed to 68mph, while with a human being up there it’s more like zero). Other things on the roof rack include a 20-litre jerry can from Front Runner and a collection of storage boxes from XS and Tentco. There’s also a side-mounted 270-degree Speedwing awning from Tuff-Trek, which turns the Defender into a kind of garden room within a few minutes of Sam parking

it up wherever his adventures on the road may have taken him. Said room can just be a lounge, or perhaps more accurately a veranda, but most likely it’s that trendiest of things, a living kitchen. You can get incredibly fancy slide-out jobs, as we all know, but Sam contents himself with a Terrafirma drop-down side table upon which a portable two-ring hob does everything the family needs. There’s another drop-down table mounted on the inside of the back door, too, as well as a large drawer which slides out from beneath a false floor to provide ample kitchen stowage. The 110 also carries a Total Cool fridge freezer (‘cheap but cheerful,’ sys Sam) and an Anker power bank and solar panel. A full-height mesh guard keeps the cargo and passenger compartments isolated from one another which is good because the

cargo in question includes a seriously big and rigid storage case. Further additions include a couple of 20-litre Front Runner water canisters mounted on the far side from the dropdown table (these have taps, so they’re more than just jerry cans), a high-lift jack bracketed to the gutter above them, various LED surround lights and a Trasharoo bag slung around the spare wheel. Talking of lights, the headlamps have been converted to LED too, and there’s a set of Masai guards to protect them. This is a set-up that might want some developing, not least in terms of total fuel capacity if they’re going to make the most of all that Australia has to offer. But the basics and more are already there, and it’s all very well tried and tested too. ‘The Puma engine and all-important sixth gear for

longer motorway stints have already proven themselves during trips to the Pyrenees and Picos De Europa, alongside many long weekends exploring all Wales has to offer,’ Sam continues. And this year the family will be going further afield than ever: ‘To celebrate a milestone birthday, the island of Corsica awaits with its many tracks and trails, stunning isolated beaches and mountain locations.’ Feeling a little jealous? Well, don’t forget that this is Sam and Nathalie’s ‘one day’ truck. Though their ‘one day’ promise to themselves was to explore Africa in a Land Rover, and with everything else in the mix that day might still be a little way in the future. It’s never too early to start getting ready for that one day, though… and wherever the road might one day take them, they’ve certainly got the vehicle for it.

Just what the world needed

Workshop

Buyers

You might not have thought that the world was crying out for another high-priced Defender restorer. But with decades of Range Rover experience behind them, Kingsley Re-Engineered is here to prove you wrong… Words: Tom Alderney Pictures: Kingsley Re-Engineered

W

hen a new vehicle gets its debut at the ultra-posh Salon Privé concours in the grounds of Blenheim Palace, you can be fairly sure it’s not for bringing home dead a deer or towing half a ton of mangel wurzels in from the field. And we’re pretty sure you didn’t think that another stratospherically priced Defender restoration company was just what the world needed. Kingsley Re-Engineered is not as expensive as some. Step forward Land Rover itself, among others. Still, to most people its ‘definitive Defender series’ might as well cost a trillion quid for all the chance they’ve got of being able to buy one. Available in 90 and 110 form, this ‘retains the essence of a Land Rover Defender while transforming it into a perfect companion for both off and

on-road trips.’ Sounds like marketing guff – but this is the work of a company which has, for approaching a quarter of a century, been turning dilapidated Range Rovers into some of the best and certainly the most usable classic vehicles in existence. Pedigree is good. Pedigree is good, and so is choice. Originality is rather wonderful too, and as standard Kingsley’s Defenders come equipped with an overhauled factory engine. Get going with the options, though, and you can have a 4.2-litre V8 putting out a delightfully lazy sounding 220bhp and 265lbf.ft. The company quotes a top speed of more than 100mph and a 0-60 time of 9.5 seconds, and if either of these figures is relevant to you then you shouldn’t buy a Defender. Further choices include Chevy LS3 and LT1 V8s, as well as auto boxes with up to eight ratios.

‘The new Defender line is not just a restoration,’ says Kingsley. ‘It is a re-imagining of the iconic Land Rover model. Each vehicle is crafted with an estimated 1500 hours of meticulous attention to detail. This comprehensive process includes significant upgrades to performance, comfort and durability.’ It also includes making them right, not just making them posh. ‘Every Kingsley build goes through a meticulous restoration process – we leave no stone unturned,’ says MD John Sawbridge. ‘This includes everything from removing corrosion from the donor chassis to ensure long-term durability and protection for future custodians, to full internal wax protection of the chassis and panels, alongside our proprietary future-proofing techniques. We don’t just build cars for today – we build them for tomorrow and generations to

Kingsley’s approach to interiors has been honed over the course of hundreds of Range Rover restorations, and choice is very much the key. The standard baseline job will include a complete restoration of the interior using Land Rover’s own trim, but most clients are going to want to stamp their own mark on the vehicle – and with nappa leather and alcantara by the yard just waiting to be called into action, Kingsley has the right stuff (literally) to help them do just that. What you’re looking at here is a combination of sandstone leather with Spinneybeck leather weave seat centres, a smaller-diameter sports steering wheel, an upgraded instrument cluster and an infotainment system running wireless Apple CarPlay come.’ Which ought to be music to your ears. We’ve all come across the sort of people who’ll chuck some leather and shiny trim at an old stinker and call it a high-end resto, after all. Further mods are made to the vehicles’ brakes and suspension. Happily, ride height stays the same rather than being dropped on to the floor and into the bin, though you get electronically controlled active damping to keep the truck under control – as well as Stage 1 upgraded brakes with larger front calipers. A set of 18” light alloy wheels is shod with BFGoodrich TA all-terrains, which is both pleasingly restrained and impressively purposeful. If you just want a Defender that’ll last forever, Kingsley’s build palette starts

with the complete refurbishment of the vehicle’s original trim. But the word ‘bespoke’ is never far away, and nor are nappa leather and alcantara. The 90 in the pictures is trimmed in sandstone leather with Spinneybeck leather weave seat centres, while its upgraded instrument cluster dials in to a system running wireless Apple CarPlay and steering is by a smaller, sportier wheel. You can, of course, choose no stereo and a standard wheel, should that be your taste in Defenders, and the trim materials and colour combinations are entirely down to you. On the outside, Kingsley has its own in-house paint shop, meaning the vehicle never needs to leave its site, or indeed its sight. With every build

being done to commission, customers can spec whatever colour or finish they want, all the way down to custom film and ceramic coating. Told you they were built to last… Further opportunities for making it your own include hard-top and panoramic glass body styles, as well as full canvas and open top with a bikini cover. Heated seats are nothing new in a Defender, though they might be in yours, and the high-tech stuff ranges from tyre pressure monitoring systems to more or less any audio rig you can physically fit in it. Kingsley has previously restored Defenders as part of individual customer projects, however these vehicles represent its first series of overhauled

Defenders as a cohesive collection. The company says the new line ‘embodies the essence of Kingsley’s craftsmanship, combined with the benefits of extensive research and development to create a unified product offering for customers worldwide.’ It’s been said that instead of buying a new Range Rover, if you spend that sort of money on getting an original one brought back to perfect condition and modernised into the bargain you’ll have something that’s worth far more money in ten years’ time. Make that something that’s worth having at all in ten years’ time. And with the advent of the L663, the same can now be said about a Defender – for what it takes to put even an entry-level new model on your drive,

you can built a proper old-shape one that’ll work for its living every day and, with nothing more than routine maintenance, outlive you. Whether Kingsley’s high-spec, high-end 90s and 110s fit the bill for an everyday work truck is for you to decide. But you can guarantee that more or less every new-shape Defender in existence right now will have been scrapped long before any of these trucks reaches the end of its natural life. And easy though it is to sneer, that has a lot to do with the deep-down engineering upon which the company’s restoration work is based. So as it turns out, perhaps another stratospherically priced Defender restoration is just what the world needed after all.

or a long, long time, original V8s have been the holy grail in the desert of used 90s and 110s. They were always outsold by diesels, even back in the days when fuel wasn’t as cripplingly expensive as it has long since become,

and over time an awful lot of them had their engines fetched out and replaced by various donor units – so these days, scarcity is a definite issue. In truth, the 3.5-litre V8 engine is not really all that special; it’s not hugely powerful and a turbo-diesel has more

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

torque. But that’s reckoning without character, and a V8 has it by the ton. Nothing sounds as good as that purposeful burble – except possibly what that purposeful burble turns into under load. The V8 has a reputation for being a sensitive soul, but on a mechanical level it’s as long-lasting as anything. It’s a very tunable engine, too, if you want it to be. You do need to shop with caution if you want to avoid a wrong ‘un – but with a

£5000-£85,000 Series II/IIA (1958-1971) for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

£2500-£30,000 Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971) They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yet as desirable as the earlier Series models

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

£3500-£22,000 101 (1972-1978) out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you’ve got one, it’s worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Appearance isn’t to everyone’s taste. Exclusivity over regular models means they command a price premium

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when

The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore – and enjoy Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing

£2500-£15,000 having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop… Pros: A Land Rover like no other, if that’s what you want Cons: Especially brutal to drive, and to find parts

£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

£3500-£35,000 127 (1985-1990) A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: Excellent parts availability. Easy to work on. Unlimited potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition

and fittings from their Army life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards. Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V8 soundtrack. Everybody who sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running costs. Expensive to buy, too

£6500-£27,000 took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a 127 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 127 is more of an enthusiast’s

motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: Enormous size means limitless potential and character Cons: Unwieldy. Sure to have had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£38,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 300. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.

The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R380, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around

Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)

The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though

the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve

Defender TDCi (2007-2016)

The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and

Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been

When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the

130 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.

£4500-£43,000 Defender Td5 (1998-2007) become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road… Pros: Strength and simplicity. Perhaps the definitive Defender Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory

The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s

involed. You will always pay a premium for a Puma, and a Tdi or Td5 may turn out to be a better purchase. Even then, though, look after it and you may well never see depreciation. Pros: Efficiency, creature comforts, off-road prowess Cons: Price, electronics, TDCi engine is unloved

to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,

making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value long-term the way an original-shaper does, either. But this is still a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, rugged fitness for purpose Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks the old one’s basic charm

Freelander (1997-2006)

The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

£400-£5500 Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much

more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model

£2000-£17,500

it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a

Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £4000-£275,000 Range Rover (1994-2002)

The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there

are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.

The fifth-generation Range Rover takes its position as a luxury car

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to

This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs

The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the

£1000-£28,000

own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t

£2200-£27,000 Range Rover (2012-22)

liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…

Range Rover (2022-on)

An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: Reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price

£99,000-£220,000 Range Rover Sport (2005-2013) £2500-£20,000

to greater extremes than ever, with lavish equipment and endless opportunities for personalisation. It’s a supreme lifestyle wagon for the rich: to many of Land Rover’s traditional fans, on the other hand, it’s the supreme irrelevance. If you can afford one, few cars could be as pleasing. However if you can afford one and you love

Land Rovers, you’re likely to be thinking about how many real ones you could buy with this sort of money. It wouldn’t make a bad way to tow your collection about the place, though… Pros: Immense prestige, and sublime both to be in and drive Cons: To at least 99% of people it’s utterly divorced from reality

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. Expect horrific running costs

Range Rover Sport (2013-22) £19,500-£140,000 Range Rover Sport (2022-on) £80,500-£145,000

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: Performance, refinement, glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run

Hilariously, this is what counts as the affordable way in to owning a

new Range Rover. The Sport is less about being chauffeur driven and more about lording it over other aspirational school runners, but once again it’ll be lovely to drive. Like the full fat Range Rover (a phrase which has never felt more appropriate), the Sport is available with an old-school V8 engine that gives you racecar performance in

return for NASA-level emissions. Most UK customers with opt for an altogether healthier plug-in hybrid, but they’ll still get a vehicle that’s brutally fast a well as being able to do the normal Range Rover stuff. Pros: Smooth, refined, comfy… and game for a laugh, too Cons: Still hasn’t quite shed its proceeds-of-crime image

Range Rover Evoque (2011-19) £7500-£41,000 Range Rover Evoque (2019-on) £31,000-£60,500

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and

because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with 4WD. Pros: Economy, handling, iconic concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport

Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 Evoque escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive. Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid

Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £27,500-£75,000 Discovery (1989-1998)

The Velar a competent cruiser and has received numerous accolades

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most

most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

Discovery 4 (2009-2017)

Somewhere between a facelift and a whole new model, the Disco 4

is basically an evolution of the 3. It looks similar and is still a practicality monster, as well as being hugely impressive on and off-road and a hero in front of a trailer, but despite being only subtly tweaked inside feels far more luxurious. That hasn’t prevented it from suffering all the same issues as time has gone on. You need to

The Discovery Sport packs seven seats into a Freelander-sized

It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque, and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes. You

other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price

The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,

with the same 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. Over time, the Disco’s epic ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,

£1000-£11,000 Discovery 3 (2004-2009) models had air-suspension, with all the horrors that brings. Mainly, D2 owners will tell you about rogue electronics. And leaky sunroofs. They still love their trucks, though, which says a lot. Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, lots of choice Cons: Chassis rust, electronics, leaky sunroofs, air suspension

The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road

and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area. But it was also astonishingly complex, and these days it has a reputation as a money pit. Air suspension and electronic

£6000-£30,000 Discovery 5 (2017-on) start off by buying the best you can possibly afford – and at the top of the market, they don’t come cheap. Get it right, though, and this is as good as a modern Land Rover has ever been. Pros: Most LR fans’ idea of what a Range Rover should be like Cons: Still a potential money pit, and the best are expensive

£12,500-£33,000 might shudder at the price if you’re buying new, though – but on the used market, there are some tidy looking deals to be had, even on high-spec examples. Pros: More practical than an Evoque, and less vulgar. Seven seats. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models

The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

Discovery Sport (2019-on)

The second-generation Disco Sport came along only four years

after the first. That’s because once again, it’s related to the Evoque, which was ready for a full new model in 2019. The Sport is a premium midsized SUV with seven seats and a decent level of off-road ability. It’s a massively popular choice for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid option last

£800-£18,000 and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts availability. Epic off-road ability Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

£1850-£16,000 handbrakes are big sources of woe, cam belts are a body-off job to change and rust is becoming more of an issue. Get a good one, though, and it’s all the car you’ll ever need. Pros: Good at everything. Lots of accessories available now Cons: As fragile as you expect, and then some

£24,500-£95,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery… Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery

£21,000-£62,000 year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model – it’s now a convincing premium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models
