pholstery specialists, Ruskin Design, has been celebrating after their designer, Gemma Lee, was announced as one of South Leicestershire College’s (SLC) Apprentices of the Year, at its annual Star Awards ceremony. At an evening of celebration, held at Jury’s Inn, Hinckley Island, Gemma received her award as Business & Professions Apprentice of the Year 2018, following a year-long course that gave her valuable knowledge and insight into business practice and leadership skills. Supported by Ruskin Design’s established Apprenticeship Scheme and the company’s commitment to empowering young workers within the automotive upholstery industry, Gemma has worked closely with SLC’s course leader, Kirsty McNamara, to guide her through the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Team Leading course and develop her role as lead designer at Ruskin Design, together with managing the growing team of machinists. Commenting on her award, Gemma said: ‘I’m delighted and proud to have been named as Business and Professions Apprentice of the Year. The course has been exceptionally worthwhile and has given me some lifelong business skills that I’m applying to my roles at Ruskin Design. ‘The course has not only given me the confidence to lead the talented teams at Ruskin but the variety of course modules have also given me a firm understanding of the business on a day to day basis – it’s definitely been worth it.’ ‘We are so proud of Gemma and what she has achieved,’ said Stephen Castledine, Managing Director of Ruskin Design. ‘She has worked so hard over the past year and we are delighted that she has been recognised for her commitment in this way. ‘Since Gemma joined the business two years ago we have watched her flourish. We realised early on that she had great potential and would be an asset to the company. She is not only a very talented designer, designing some of our most creative and stylish commissions, but she is also exceptionally organised, measured and diligent. We can’t wait to see Gemma’s next achievement – and of course, we will support her all the way.’ With her thirst for learning, and clearly a supportive environment, the future is bright both for Gemma and Ruskin Design.

ounded in 2007, the Project Jay Preservation Group (PJPG) will officially move forward with club status as of 2019. Originally founded when four owners of Land Rover Discoverys from the launch fleet, the G-WACs, met up at the Heritage Run, Gaydon, the intervening twelve years has seen the group steadily grown in numbers. Chaired by Roy Preston, the go-to man for anything and everything regarding the earliest iterations of the Discovery, the group is dedicated to the preservation of early Discos, also known as the JAYS, which is the codename given by Solihull to the Discovery whilst it was under development in the 1980s. ‘With so few Jays about now, we will not be a wealthy club, we just want to cover costs, the Public Liability Insurance for shows, show equipment etc,’

says aficionado Roy. ‘But we hope to encourage owners of Jays to keep them on the road’. Kicking off the show season in March with the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show at the NEC in Birmingham, the PJPG will be in attendance at many of the major Land Rover and Classic Car shows throughout the year.

For a membership fee of £25.00 per year, members will be able to help build and maintain the heritage of Land Rover’s first family SUV. So, whether you’re the owner of a G-WAC launch Discovery, a Jay (up to model year 1993) or are simply interested in learning more about these iconic vehicles, visit https://www.pjpg. co.uk for more information.

mere 3,200 miles on the clock. It is the top-spec Autobiography long-wheelbase version, hauled by the powerful 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel. Initially, the model had a list price of just £105,080,

but given the right royal connections, and exorbitant accessories, the vehicle is listed on the car-buying app for £129,850. That’s an increase of 24% over the price when new. Part of the reason for the hike in price – other than the previous regal ownership – are the accessories fitted to the Range Rover. These include covert lighting, police emergency lighting for when Her Royal Highness has left the gas on, and specifically forged side steps to aid the Queen when climbing into the passenger seat. This isn’t the first Green Oval to be listed on the website, with Prince William’s Range Rover selling in 2016 at double the price of when new. But regardless, we’re all wishing we’d stumped up for that Defender four years ago, right?

here has long been a connection between the Green Oval and those who reside in Buckingham Palace. The Queen has had everything from open-air Range Rover parade vehicles to her very own custom Defender that she used for shooting days. Believe it or not, the latter of those two was auctioned off in 2014 for a little over £30,000. Just imagine how much Liz’s Defender would sell for now?! On Auto Trader there is currently a Range Rover with similarly Royal connections. Prince Philip’s Range Rover has been put up for sale, having previously been used in a famous meeting with the Obamas in 2016. The Prince drove the 16 plate, navy Rangey to meet President Barack and First Lady Michelle during their state visit two years ago and is listed now with a

t’s remarkable that the Land Rover Defender is now as good as a classic. If you own a tidy Defender, the chances are you could sell it for a particularly strong amount of cash. Admittedly, some examples you see with a price tag north of £50k is utterly ridiculous. It is, after all, a Defender – meaning little elbow room and little spine left after five minutes at the helm. However, because no one – not even Land Rover – will make anything like the Defender again, this means every Defender out there has the potential to be a sound investment, but also to be the platform for a rebuild. This month we have Outlander Custom Vehicles’ Nardo Grey 90 build in The Landy. It’s been given a makeover, despite only being a 2011 model. But I like it – because it’s different. The Outlander 90 may grab your attention because of its colour scheme, but isn’t it nice to see something other than an all-black exterior? For something that’s so customisable, it’s amazing how many people just follow the herd and mimic the increasingly common ‘blinged’ body. This is a vehicle for herding sheep for crying out loud, not being one! Either way, I appreciate Defenders I see that have tried to set themselves apart from the norm, even if they aren’t to my own personal taste. That’s my venting done, but there is one thing left to say. Firstly, by the time you read this, you’ll be sick to the sight of mince pies (I know I am) and you’ll most likely be deep into ballsing up your New Year’s resolutions. However, it goes without saying that I wish you all the best for 2019 – and perhaps this will be the year when we finally see the new Defender finished and out on the open road. ollowing a successful debut show, Land Rover Legends has been confirmed to return in 2019. This year’s show highlighted variety in the Land Rover stable, from early Series trucks to the Range Rover family and current line-ups that all have had a part in the marque’s story so far. The show will champion originality and authenticity with static displays of important Land Rovers from over the years helping illustrate the detailed history of the vehicles. As well as fine examples of the cars that made the brand, there will be close up access to people who helped make the cars, as they are on hand to give speeches and share their stories. Another addition to the 2019 bill will be the involvement of the Dunsfold Col-

lection. This grouping of Land Rovers totals 140 vehicles bearing the iconic green oval, and a selection of these rare and unusual Land Rovers will be brought along to the show for you to peruse in close proximity. As before, every Land Rover attending the show can be part of the celebrations thanks to the forward-facing parking on the day. New for the second year will be onsite camping, so visitors to the event can pitch a tent within the Bicester Heritage grounds and partake in the evening entertainment on the Saturday and enjoy a full weekend’s worship of the Green Oval. Many Land Rover models will also be represented by a ‘Star Car’ at the show as various vehicles reach milestone birthdays in 2019. Tickets are on sale now, so check landroverlegends.com out to get your tickets for the 25 and 26 May.

In Gear Words: George Dove

The very latest gear you need this winter for your Land Rover

Guardian of the Night Torches aren’t something we use all that often, are they? Obviously, some use them more than others due to work and different professions, but for many people the only time they’ll use a torch is in an emergency. Some emergencies are, well, grander than others. For example, you might get your torch out when you’ve dropped your keys on the drive, or you think you may have scraped your vehicle’s underside and want to check it. Both are usually solved easily, as you either locate your keys with ease or inspect the chassis and promptly decide everything will probably be alright. But neither of these are real emergencies. Imagine this… Coming around, you’ve a sore head and slowly you realise that you’re in your car. But things aren’t okay. You’ve had a crash and your passenger is unconscious. The doors won’t open, but the glovebox will. Grabbing your NightSearcher LifeGuard, you utilise the window breaker to forge a way out.

The brightest, longest lasting +150% performance halogen bulb.

Products

Using it again to get into the passenger side, you try the seatbelt, but it doesn’t give. The in-built seatbelt cutter (which is much, much sharper than you think) helps you out here, and soon your loved one is free and you can walk away from the carnage to safety as you await aid, using the 70 lumens of the LED torch to guide the way. Apologies – got a bit carried away there. It’s not nice to think about, and we do all we can to avoid a crash, but sometimes they’re unavoidable. Talking of unavoidable things, sometimes a Land Rover is likely to breakdown. Yes, really. When this happens, it could be anywhere and at any time. But the LifeGuard will still be useful here, thanks to the magnetic strip that runs along the side, meaning the LED floodlight can be used to comfortably light any engine bay. Offering 200 lumens, the strip lighting covers a wide area with bright light so you can see exactly what you’re doing.

The LifeGuard is a clever yet compact device, with measurements of 159x47x22mm, and weighing just 127g. It’s also a strong performer is the toughness stakes as it can withstand falls up to a metre. It takes three AAA batteries, and can function on flood for five hours, or three in torch setting. For more information on this fantastic piece of kit, visit nightsearcher.co.uk, where you can pick up your own LifeGuard for just £18.80 RRP.

Micro Power

Sometimes our vehicles need a little ‘encouragement’ after a spell on the sidelines, or even if they’ve had to face the coldest of winter nights outside. By ‘encouragement’ we mean a kick up the starter motor and a shot in the arm to give the battery the boost it needs to fire up our faithful workhorse. The trouble is, fetching out the big battery jumpers and all the cabling can be a faff, with a trip to the garage or toing and froing from the house just to get you and your pick-up underway. Thankfully, Ring Automotive has been busy engineering its new set of lithium battery-powered Micro Jump Starters, which will help significantly reduce the headache of getting your truck back into life. There are two versions available: namely the RPPL200 Micro Jump Starter, suitable for boosting vehicles up to 2.0 litres in capacity, or there’s a stronger Micro High Power Jump Starter capable of tackling motors up to 3.0 litres in size. The advantage of both these jump starters is there dimensions and ability to recharge far more quickly than any traditional lead acid power pack. Firstly, the 200, which weighs just 300g and can be stowed away in your glovebox with its slim 19mmdeep design, while it can be recharged using the accompanying micro USB charging cable in just two hours. Its heavy-duty brother, the 300, weighs in at 490g and sits 30mm deep, but can still be fully charged in three hours. And that’s not the only features, either. Both come with a built-in LED light and there’s a USB socket so the starters can act as power banks. There’s also intelligent clamping to protect the starter and your vehicle while in use, plus the reverse polarity protection feature stops sparks flying should you get your wires crossed. Lightweight, slim, quick to recharge, packed with features and keen to give your truck a kick up the load bed, these new Micro Jump Starters from Ring could be exactly what you need when everything turns a bit flat. The smaller 200 model costs £59.99 and the 300 just £89.99. Order yours now at www.ringautomotive.com

Tyres on Land Rovers face higher demands than the rubber on many other vehicles. Land Rovers need to be able to put power down to maximise pulling strength, but without causing excess damage to the ground. They’re also required to handle rocky hillside terrain and offer predictable control on extremely wet grassy or muddy terrain and be a safe, comfortable on-road tyre when you need to make tracks on the open road. This is exactly what Davanti’s first all-terrain tyre, Terratoura, has set out to offer. In extreme testing across Europe, Terratoura has been pushed to the limits by Davanti engineers. The company claims that ‘powerful, progressive bite and grip delivers reliable traction in adverse conditions and is coupled with low noise and exceptional ride comfort for an AT tyre that is a true all-rounder.’ Immediately joining the elite club of AT tyres carrying the Three-Peak

Mountain Snowflake accreditation mark, Terratoura can legally run all year round in most countries across Europe, eliminating the need to switch to winter tyres.

Allowing the Terratoura to achieve such impressive results are the host of technical features engineered into the design of the tread. The five-rib pattern is designed to excel both on and off the

road, along with grip and performance in all conditions. A pair of longitudinal grooves run the circumference of the tyre, which deal with water expulsion and help grip in the wet, whilst the

wide shoulder grooves do the same for loose surfaces, such as sand, gravel and dust. The compound of the rubber is tailored to provide durability to cope with the rigors of off-road driving, whilst the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake certification means you can count on it in the cold. Support bars in the tread design offer an assured performance on the road and also keep road noise down, and the main carcass of the tyre is optimised for off-road usage, with reinforced polyester cords improving load capacity and also making it tougher and more resistant to damage. Two steel belts offer more reliable and balanced load distribution and avoid uneven tread wear. The Terratoura has been available in the UK since September and is ideal for a working Land Rover. Siliconhoses.com, the high-performance hose division of Forge Motorsport, has slashed prices on many of its Land Rover Defender and Discovery engine hoses. Made from high grade silicon polymer and reinforced by a high-strength polyester fabric, the high-performance hoses have an operational temperature range of -40 to 180 degrees, which should cover even the most temperamental of Land Rovers with a comfortable margin. As the firm looks to rationalise its range of off-road products, to make way for a number of exciting new products, these hoses have taken on end of line status and are, therefore, on sale – at dramatically reduced prices. The range covers mainly the Tdi models, but there are several others on sale, in blue, red and black, for those that would rather keep things with a more factory appearance. The Siliconhoses.com site also shows each part under its equivalent OEM part number, so locating the correct part for your pride and joy should be easy and quick – as well as better value and performance than ever! Prices start from just £4.04 + VAT – but be quick!

A game mug

The exhaust is a bit like food – a blend of both necessity and indulgence. Your engine needs it to breathe, but it’s also the portal to soul of the machine – be that a charming Tdi or an ethereal V8. Either way, you both love it and need it. Strictly speaking, the same isn’t true of a cup of tea, but much of the time it certainly feels it, doesn’t it? For a Landy lover whose blood is slowly turning creamy brown* this may well be the perfect gift. JerryCo create beautiful mugs from 304-grade stainless steel with a rolled edge, replicating a 3” exhaust. They’re simply stunning, and thanks to their metallic construction they’re excellent at retaining heat and will never rust. Their 460ml capacity offers plenty of tea to work through whilst in mind of your particular Landy’s grumble. These super strong and smart mugs can be found at jerryco.co.uk, and can be yours for just £19.99. *If your blood is turning this colour, don’t be a mug – please consult a medical practitioner.

Special Task Force

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Mike Trott and Nick Dimbleby

When there’s a new engine readying for production, you need a special vehicle to become the test mule and provide the platform on which thousands, potentially millions, of other cars will be based. And in 1956, this 86” Series I helped shape the next three decades of Land Rover power

B

ack in the 1950s, after the success of the first Land Rover, Solihull was preparing for the launch of the second-generation Series Land Rover – a very different situation it found itself in to the stop-gap money-maker they initially proposed the Series I to be. But with success comes the need to push on and ride the wave of growth. With the Series II in progress, Land Rover knew it would also need to up its game on the engine front, especially with the Mk2 Landy being bigger and heavier than the Series I. A new, more powerful 2.25-litre petrol engine was being developed, which would later share its DNA with the 2.25-litre diesel unit that was introduced in the Series IIA. These engines may have originated from the 1950s, but both petrol and diesel versions would

go on to propel Land Rovers for the best part of 30 years. The Series I you see before you was one of the test bed vehicles used in honing the mechanicals of the petrol 2.25 motor, prior to the 1958 launch of the Series II. For such a delicate mission, you’re going to need a determined and unselfish character that is willing to put their neck on the line for the good of the objective – and this 86” test mule was the one selected for duty. Today this Series I resides within the Dunsfold Collection, a group of Land Rovers that makes up the world’s largest assortment of Green Oval machines. The Collection now stands at 140 different vehicles, with many of them being rare or unusual creations, whilst some have had an important role to play in the development of new models or powertrains.

And this 86” Landy is one of them. Like all Land Rovers back then, this Series I was built in Solihull, with this model being assembled on 24 January 1956. However, the 86” remained unregistered until the November of the same year when it was then sold. Clearly, the Green Oval hierarchy had special plans for this vehicle. This 86” was installed with the new 2.25 Rover car type engine and began testing the unit for its suitability in the next generation of Series Land Rover. Throughout the testing phase, Dunsfold believe the Land Rover wore trade plates, which explains the gap between the vehicle being built and registered. Land Rover will have looked at the running of the engine within the vehicle to see what teething problems or issues could arise should they decide to roll out the engine on a mass production scale.

Above: The 2.25 petrol engine was a simple motor, but it was good enough to power Land Rovers for many years, even into the 1980s with the Ninety The testing for the new 2.0-litre diesel of the day was also being prepared and it was this particular unit that caused the 86” to become the 88”, after it was discovered that the front diff was being fouled by the diesel motor. As for the 86” Land Rover here, the engine lurking under the hood is snuggly fitted and sits close to fouling the diff itself, however, near the base there is a smaller pulley which generates enough clearance for there not to be any issues.

For a vehicle like this, to have to pound in the miles just to see if it will stutter to an abrupt halt, it must have felt like a pretty thankless task. But on the flipside, the hundreds of thousands of Land Rovers it will have seen on the roads, fields and byways running a 2.25-litre engine in subsequent years will have been never-ending – and an extremely rewarding reminder of the fine things that came from this 86-inch Land Rover’s efforts.

This Series I lived in Sussex after being sold by Rover and eventually found its way to Dorset. In its later years, a Norwegian collector bought the vehicle but ironically, given that the 86” is on an

export RHD chassis number, the Land Rover has never left the UK. And that looks set to be the case for many years to come. This 86” will have worked hard fulfilling its role in the histo-

ry of Land Rover’s engine development, but it can now rest soundly knowing that the Dunsfold Collection will be helping preserve the history – and future – of this wonderful 86” Land Rover.

Colour Coordination

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Graham Mann

ith the changing state of the Land Rover market, many of the vintage Green Oval machines are being treated with a lot more care than decades gone by. I’m talking about the switch from noble workhorse to pampered classic. Pretty much any Land Rover from the pre-Td5 era is now considered a classic Land Rover. But it’s the Defender – from any period – that is now becoming the subject of rebuilds and restorations. At Outlander Custom Vehicles, refurbished Defenders have been the focus of the company’s business for some time and this tidy 90 is one of their more recent accomplishments. Now, the Defender isn’t known for conforming to convention and Outlander owner, Graham Mann, is just the same. ‘I don’t really do commissioned builds,’ explains Graham. ‘All my cars are my own and just done to my own taste. I then offer them for sale afterwards.’ This rebuilt 90, as Graham rightfully points out, ‘is not just a respray’. But it’s exactly because of the unique colour scheme on this 90 that it so different to the norm. How many Defenders have you seen restored and finished in black,

with black wheels, black grilles and wing-top vents? It’s all a bit… common. The two tones at work here are Nardo Grey and Liquid Yellow, a duo of colours that you’re more likely to have come across on some of the automotive world’s more rapid machinery, including Audi’s RS sledgehammers and Renault’s fizzy hot hatches. But here they’re draped over a 2011 car with just 29,000 miles on the clock, emphasising the fact that a Defender doesn’t have to be old to receive a rebuild. And in case you do believe this 90 has just walked into a fresh can of paint, here’s some of its key features. ‘As always, it has been fully stripped, rubbed back to metal and painted inside and out,’ describes Graham. ‘The roof is Liquid Yellow, along with the bulkhead bar inside, but there’s many other features besides.’ Those features consist of 18” Sawtooth alloys wrapped in BFGoodrich tyres, a new grille and surrounds for the xenon headlights and LED lighting elsewhere, plus there’s a NAS rear step, swing away wheel carrier and a new pair of side steps. Slip inside the Nardo 90 and there’s also fresh additions such as soundproof-

Rebuilding Defenders is now the done thing, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to make them stand out from the crowd. Although that’s not a problem for Outlander Custom Vehicles

ing, a Momo Prototipo steering wheel and carbon dash. The leather seats and Bluetooth stereo complete the options list on this particular build. ‘I really just wanted to do something a bit different and have a bit of fun with colour,’ continues Graham. ‘I’ve always liked the Liquid Yellow Renaults and also the clean minimalism of the Nardo Grey.’ Personally, I think it’s worked a treat, and it remains a more tasteful rendition compared to others you may see. ‘As this was a 2011 model, it was actually very easy to work on. There were no dents, damage or rust. It was as simple as taking it apart and then putting it back together. With older Defenders, most of the time goes on repairs and replacements.’ Is it any wonder, then, that people are performing rebuilds on Pumas that aren’t even ten years old yet? Defenders are more mainstream than ever, now that many have ventured away from the fields and into the cities, but everyone has their own vision when it comes to customisation. ‘There is a wide range of tastes and styles and as always, everyone has their own idea of the perfect Defender,’ continues Graham. ‘For me, I like them to be simple and functional. Given that Range Rovers are cheaper than Defenders of the same age (at just a few years old anyway), I always say that if you’re after the thick carpets and leather look, just a buy a Range Rover. I like Defenders to be fun and capable of being hosed out.’ With an alternative angle on the rebuild market, along with a few inspired design touches, Graham has given his Outlander Custom Vehicles a reputation for recreating Green Ovals with a style of genuine difference. Below: While the exterior may be the first thing to catch your eye, the interior has been given plenty of treats. There’s soundproofing, Bluetooth, a carbon dash and a new steering wheel

Establishing the history of a Land Rover can be a tricky task. For James Beswick, when he came across this converted P38, there were some serious pieces of the puzzle missing…

Mystery Solved

A

few years ago we featured a P38 Range Rover that belonged to a gentleman called Ian Jackson. It was a fine specimen of a P38, partly because a 5.0-litre JE Engineering V8 was supposedly propelling it along. As far as Ian could gather, the P38 had been the subject of a £20,000 blank cheque workshop bonanza, turning the Rangey’s original 4.6 V8 into a 5.0-litre JE special and in the process ramping up power from 225hp to 280hp. Shortly after the P38 appeared between these sheets, James Beswick spotted the Range Rover for sale – again in this very publication. He went along to view it and did end up buying the P38, although not without coming away a little confused. ‘My dad saw it in The Landy and we went to look at it, but a lot of the info we received about the vehicle was based on pub talk,’ recalls James. ‘There was a lot of guesstimation going on.’ Part of this was because the P38 was up for a cheap price and was clearly nursing a couple of issues. The coolant, for instance, was disappearing faster than it could be replenished. ‘I wasn’t entirely sure it was a JE engine and in the advert for it, there was something about a TVR chip?’ says James. Thankfully, James is no stranger to P38s, chiefly because he runs his own business, J Beswick Engineering, which specialises in the suave Green Ovals. So at the very least, James saw the opportunity for a cheap engine and had the expertise not to be sent running to the hills.

The deal was sealed in November 2014 and once the P38 was back home with James, the investigations could begin. Now in the workshop, James made the discovery that the engine was not a 5.0-litre unit, but instead a 4.8-litre V8. ‘There was something curious about the engine number, too, as this was a V8 Developments number and not a

‘No longer does the P38 drink like a rugby team on a big night out’ JE mark,’ recalls James. ‘I know Ray at V8 Developments, so I rang him up and he told me they had the vehicle in from James French to do a top hat and bottom end rebuild on it.’ That explains the identification number, then, but where does the original JE Engineering build fit into all this? On further investigation, it turns out that

the guy who bought the vehicle from JE Engineering took the Range Rover to be serviced at James French, which is where the dots start to join up. ‘The car had covered 42,000 miles when JE converted it and changed it from a 4.6 to a 4.8 back in 2005, before the P38 was sent to V8 Developments later on once it had reached 82,000 miles,’ explains James. With a clearer picture of the Range Rover’s past, James quickly started to look at its future and set about alleviating some of the P38’s wounds. The leaking would have to be stopped, with the source trickling from one of the gaskets that was losing fluid down the side of the block. With James on hand, no longer does the P38 drink like a rugby team on a big night out, but also this rather fabulous sounding machine is now a more efficient runabout. James explains, ‘The engine is now a 4.9 V8 and has been given a high torque camshaft and longer throttle plate. The throttle plate is 30% larger and the engine has been heavily ported and uses larger inlets. This all makes for better flow and mechanically there are no issues now.’ Part of its increased reliability is due to James reverting the thermostat to a more conventional setup, banishing the PRT unit in the process. The ECU and injectors have also been given the onceover, by none other than Mark Adams at Tornado Systems – which in James’ words has ‘made a big difference’. The running of the engine is now in tip-top condition and fuel economy has

even bumped up from a horrendous 11mpg to the actual original claimed figure of 20mpg. ‘I always wanted a P38, even when I had my old Classic. This was the Range Rover of the day when I was growing up, so I guess it’s a bit of a childhood thing,’ expresses James. ‘I loved my Classic, but these don’t rust.’

And thanks to James and his efforts, this is a P38 that will now be kept on the mechanical straight and narrow. Its owner finds plenty of uses for it whether that be taking the dogs out, towing a trailer or horsebox, or even just a backroad blast through the countryside. ‘A lot of people who buy P38s from me have had one previously, moved it

on and then find themselves wanting to go back,’ shares James. When they’re this good, it’s not difficult to see why. This P38 is a bespoke machine that lost its way. However, with some digging into its history and some time spent with people who know P38s inside and out, this unique Range Rover now has an owner who understands it completely.

and Rovers are a diverse breed of vehicles and you’ll find links with many organisations and sectors because of this. Go to a boatyard, an equestrian centre, a farm, shooting range, country estate and you’ll likely find a Land Rover. Even on your school run. But there aren’t too many links to aviation. But there is now… This Portofino Red beauty is the wondrous Aviator by Arkonik. It’s a 110 that’s been given the full Arkonik treatment from the ground up – and it oozes class.

Chocks Away Words: George Dove Pictures: Arkonik but the Land Rover’s wings at least look smart with the blackout checker plate and inset KBX vents. There’s more KBX around the front, with their blackout light surrounds and light guards helping to give the Aviator its purposeful demeanour. Front and centre, however, is a chunky A-frame nudge bar, again lowlighted in black that plays home to a pair of half-foot Hella spotlights. The front winch bumper houses a Warn Zeon 10-S winch, proving that there is intent to get into sticky situations – even if it is only from the Defender’s point of view. It’s business at the front with raised Land Rover lettering, and party at the back with Defender Swoosh badging. The landing gear comes in the form of black 16” Kahn Defend 1948 alloys, dressed in the tried and tested BFGoodrich AT rubber. A Front Runner roof rack straddles the contrasting white roof, with a matching ladder running down the rear. Fitted to the underside of the roof rack is a bar of five LED spotlight bars, meaning that visibility off-road will be impeccable. Entrance into the Aviator

As with all of their Land Rover restorations, Somerset-based Arkonik performed a full nut and bolt reconditioning of this Defender, giving new life to the original parts. That means that this station wagon still uses the 200Tdi unit it was born with, but has been tailored to pose all of the sartorial elegance associated with the art of aviation. Despite mirroring the world of up, up and away, the Aviator’s similarities with aeroplanes goes little further than wings. This doesn’t mean the Aviator can fly,

here are many wonderful destinations across the world you can visit in your Land Rover. Places like Iceland and Morocco offer extremes that only a Land Rover can thrive in, while if you happen to be lucky enough to be behind the steering wheel in these parts, you’ll also be treated to scenery that God would give himself a pat on the back for. The only thing is, both of these destinations are not exactly a well-kept secret. These are two destinations that, while still incredible to witness and places that you should still include on your

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Bryan Pickles bucket list, you get the sense you’re driving the same tracks and walking the same paths many people have already done before you. It’s inevitable, really, given that the world is a smaller place than ever. No longer can you experience a genuine Christopher Columbus moment, but by the same token, you don’t want to feel like that guy who’s the last to understand the punch line. However, if you want to travel to places still under the radar, but still enjoy the hassle-free set-up of having a tour guide to show you the treasures lurking along

the way, you can always turn to Compass Adventures. Bryan Pickles did. For him, along with his wife, the idea of visiting Corsica had always carried a strong allure. ‘I hadn’t been on any adventures like this before, but my wife had,’ explains Bryan. ‘Before we even met she travelled through South Africa all the way up through to Europe. We’ve both always wanted to go to Corsica and had just never been.’ In order to tick off Corsica from their bucket list, Bryan started (as anyone should) by purchasing a Land Rover –

only this isn’t any old Green Oval. This 110 Adventure Edition is one of the last Defenders to roll off the Solihull production line, but more importantly it’s an ideal overland vehicle straight out of the box. Bryan admits it was bought as a bit of an investment (and who can blame him) but that hasn’t stopped the family packing it up and using it like a 1960s Attenborough. With the perfect vehicle ready to use, it was more by chance that Bryan came across Bob Seaborn of Compass Adventures and the best method in which to see Corsica. ‘I met Bob at the Peterborough show as he was next door to the Nene Overland stand and we had gone to look at the CamelBAC overland adventure trailer,’ speaks Bryan. ‘We used to have a four-man tent on the top, but it’s not the most stable and every time you want to go somewhere, you need to pack it all away again before you can head off.’ Having bagged a new trailer much more suited to the needs of the Pickles, and having spoken to Bob and been attracted to the notion of seeing Corsica without the stress of organising anything, Bryan and the family set sail for Corsica last July. ‘With Bob, you don’t have to think – he organises everything, from the ferry crossings to the navigation, so you can sit back and relax,’ continues Bryan. Knowing everything was taken care of, Bryan settled in for a nine-day, 2500-mile adventure that would see the Pickles experience the diverse beauty of Corsica. The tour started with a rendezvous in Dover and an early morning ferry crossing to Calais, before the long drive down to Mont Blanc would ensure the majority of the more mundane miles were covered in one hit. Not that the Alps are what you’d call mundane – and it’s worth it when you get to camp at the base of Mont Blanc and then the next day you can head into the tunnel running through the heart of the mountain. ‘Our second day consisted of a drive down to Pisa in Italy, where we would camp for the evening before an early start to Livorno, which is where we caught the ferry to Corsica,’ explains Bryan. ‘Once on the island, we pitched up on the beach and spent the rest of the day chilling and swimming.’

Having reached Corsica, it’s up to you in terms of what you want to do with your time. Bryan speaks highly of Bob and his flexibility with people’s preferences, including those who wish to head off-road and see more of the world via trails, or those who wish to sit back and watch the world go by while adjacent to a stunningly pretty vista. ‘As a family, we’re not serious off-roaders. The trails we did were great, but we’re not about to go and search for the most extreme terrain out there,’ tells Bryan. ‘If you want to go and do boulder runs that’s fair enough – some of the guys went off in the evening with Bob and did extra trails.’ The Pickles may favour a more relaxing approach to travel, but that didn’t stop them putting the new off-road trailer to the test. For two of the days, Bob had organised a couple of off-road excursions: one that would see them head over a mountain pass, and the other that would involve reaching a beach which only a Land Rover can. Bryan adds, ‘The trailer will go where any Land Rover will go – and we’ve proved it! It has a fully independent suspension with coilovers, so it’s very capable. For the trip down to the beach, we went down this real rough track. Once we got down there, the beach only had about three people on it!’ Away from secluded beaches and mountain passes, Bryan also found res-

Above: You won’t be short of spectacular scenery when you visit the island of Corsica pite in the towns, filled with monasteries and some very proud Corsicans. ‘The towns were really quaint and the one thing you notice is the big lack of trucks – we were probably the biggest things on the road there,’ says Bryan. ‘It may be a French island, but they are very keen to point out that they’re Corsican, not French. ‘It’s an island full of lovely friendly people, the food and wine is superb, and the beer too actually. I’d recommend Corsica to anyone.’

Above: There are many trails ready to explore in Corsica and when you’re with Compass Adventures, you can choose how many you’d like to tackle

In total, Bryan and his family spent five nights on the island, taking in crystal clear waters, beaches only accessible by Green Oval and off-road tracks leading to incredible landscapes. They also visited Corte, the old capital of Corsica, along with Santo-Pietro-di-Tenda, just one of the many quaint towns they encountered over the course of their stay. Upon this island, the Pickles found a quiet and peaceful corner of the globe that, on the whole, remains detached from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. It’s a fine destination in which to unwind. Another reason for the fascination with Corsica for Bryan was through his passion for rallying. ‘Some years ago I was a semi-pro rally driver and for a long time I wanted to come and see the spot where Henri Toivonen crashed in his Lancia Delta and sadly lost his life,’ states Bryan. His co-driver at the time, Sergio Cresto, also succumbed to the fatal crash and it was this accident in 1986 that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for the legendary Group B rally cars. Within hours of the accident, the FIA (then known as the FISA) declared it would remove the Group B class for the 1987 season. Unfortunately, the move came too late for Toivonen and Cresto and to visit the spot where they lost their loves will have been a sombre moment for fellow rally driver, Bryan, but a moment to treasure nonetheless. This is just one moment of many that Bryan experienced in Corsica. It’s a place where the Pickles will no doubt want to revisit, thanks to the many fantastic memories they’ve taken away with them, and all achieved through Bob at Compass Adventures ensuring they have little to worry about. If you want to get away from it all and find a place of tranquillity, but still want to take your Land Rover along for the ride, all you really need is Compass. www.compassadventures.co.uk

Leaky Landy

I

t may surprise you, but Land Rovers have a reputation for occasionally... okay, frequently developing an array of leaks. This can mean fuel, water, coolant, oil – you name it, if you’ve poured a liquid into a Land Rover, the chances are it’ll soon vomit the liquid straight back out all over your nice, clean driveway. Some engines are worse than others, but today we’re going to be looking at a

fuel leak on a Td5 Defender, while it was recently under the inspection lamp at Ashley 4x4. The problem comes from the back of the cylinder head and will need a new gasket fitting, along with the aluminium block that accompanies it. If you’re a competent mechanic, and have a Defender that’s playing ball, then you can make the swap in around 30 minutes. Here’s the general method.

Land Rovers sometimes develop leaks (shocking, isn’t it?) and that means they need to be put right. And the focus today is on the ‘reliable’ Td5 motor... Words and Pictures: Mike Trott 1. Once you have the engine cover off, this is the problem area you’ll be looking at. This is an easier job on a Defender Td5, as oppose to the Discovery Td5, because the engine sits further forward. It’s still a fiddly job and requires some guess work for where your hands need to be

ere’s a first-world problem to ponder: how do you make a well-equipped SUV even more desirable? I’ve owned my Freelander 2 for well over a year, and have loved every minute of driving it. I relish its poise on the road. I love its ability to tackle surprisingly fierce terrain and emerge unscathed. I adore its character. And I still get a childish thrill when I see the green oval staring at me from the steering wheel. But there is just one small detail about the car that I think could be improved: comfort. The seats, which are the standard fabric-leather items used on the SE, are slightly hard for my taste.

I increasingly find that I have a numb bottom and aching back even after a relatively short journey – something that’s become more pronounced the longer I’ve owned the vehicle. Part of the problem may be that my son appropriated the lumbar support adjustment wheel from the side of the driver’s seat when it fell out of position a few months ago. I think it’s now being used as the landing gear of a washingup-liquid-based space craft, and I’m just too feeble a father to reclaim it. Another issue is that my experience of driving Freelander 2s until buying this one was behind the wheel of my parents’ vehicle. While that’s of a similar vintage to mine, it benefits from an upgraded HSE interior, meaning squishy leather seats that rival my old Volvo for armchair-like levels of comfort. The other thing about Mum and Dad’s car that I’ve always appreciated is the folding armrests on the front seats. Maybe I have an unnaturally heavy forearm (insert smutty joke of your choice), but I’ve always found this to be an important feature in a car. I like somewhere to rest my elbow while I’m on the move, and my Freelander didn’t come equipped with such an item as standard. Clearly, it’s impossible to screw a folding armrest into the side of my seats. But Britpart has developed a solution. It comes in the form of a leather-topped Top: Adjustable top means the arm rest works for drivers of all proportions Left: The only tool needed for the job – a cross-head screwdriver

centre cubby box that fits into the console between the seats to provide storage and comfort in equal measure. I’ve had my eye on such an item for a long time, and finally got round to ordering one last month. Sadly, I ordered the wrong product first time around, and only realised that it was intended for a facelifted post-2012 Freelander 2 when I couldn’t make it fit in the hole (cue further smutty joke, if you’re so inclined). The people at Britpart were characteristically understanding of my idiocy and duly dispatched the right item. And with just a simple turn of a solitary screw (quiet at the back now…), I have a splendid resting place for my plump arm. The top slides back and forth, meaning my shorter-armed wife can also use it, and the storage is great for assorted items like iPhones, chewing gum and Percy Pigs. Like all the best modifications, this is a simple item that makes a big difference to my enjoyment of the car. Why Land Rover didn’t think the relatively high-spec SE Freelander 2 deserved an armrest when it left the factory I don’t know. But what I do know is this: it’s given me a little project for a wintry evening after work. And like everything that you haven’t always had, I appreciate my new-found arm comfort all the more. Thank you Britpart. This product comes highly recommended.

The Landy Buyer

All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy

Starting Early

I

n amongst the many Land Rovers featured in this issue, there is a rebuilt Defender, fresh from the workshop of Outlander Custom Vehicles, that only has a few years to its name. Normally, only classic Land Rovers, such as the Series I or IIA, are likely to be on the receiving end of a refurbishment. But with the Land Rover market in its current state, every Defender is all but a timeless classic. Even Puma Defenders are on the receiving end now. So what if you want to find your ideal blank canvas, ready for when you take it into the workshop and start the process of building your dream Defender? Well, prices of Defenders are steady

and with the new one set to be the chalk to the old cheese, any clean and tidy Defender will make a tidy investment. Pumas (i.e. the later TDCi versions) had the six-speed gearbox and a few more creature comforts inside to make the Defender more ‘hospitable’. It’s no Rangey, of course, but heated seats and air conditioning that does its job is always welcome. If you want something similar to the base car Outlander used, then you’ll be looking at around £22,000. Not cheap, but TDCi models can be picked up for less with more miles, and even £15,000 could give you the base car you need for your concept of a Defender.

Insure your Defender with Adrian Flux from as little as £260**

* Based on 2011 XS trim model, 45-year-old driver, semi-rural area, kept on drive, 12,000 miles per annum, green lane and off-road cover, no claims or convictions and £250 excess ** With tracker fitted (£320 without)

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collec-

tor’s item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

£7000-£50000+ Versions: 80” (‘48-’53), 86” (‘54-’56), 107” Pick Up (‘54-’56), 107” SW (‘54’58). 88”, 109” Pick Up (‘56-’58). 1.6 4cyl petrol (‘48-‘52), 2.0 4cyl petrol (‘52- ‘58). Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80”s

£2500-£30000 Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘58-’71), 2.0 4cyl diesel (‘58-’61), 2.25 4cyl diesel (‘61-’71), 2.6 6cyl petrol (‘67-’71 (109” only)). Pros: As a resto it’s a sound investment, some examples now MOT exempt, more desireable than SIII Cons: Bulkheads can rot with ease, check suspension leaves for seizing

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub. To mimic the civvy Series machines,

the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5TD version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender Tdi (1990-1998) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got.

After the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability. Properly maintained, they can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after.

Pros: Excellent off-road, arguably the very best engines, old-school electrics Cons: Units are getting rare, many have been used hard; Tdi it might be, but that doesn’t mean rustproof

36

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few exam-

ples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace

and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s in

good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

£4000-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (1998-2007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment

£7000-£60000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (2007-2016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).

Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same off-road prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed

£500-£4000 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05).

Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done

£2900-£21000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for

strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

37

£1600-£9000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said

£3800-£31000 Versions: 3.0 Td6 (‘02-’06), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘02-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘06-’10), 4.4 TDV8 (‘10-’12), 4.2 supercharged V8 petrol (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (‘09-’12).

Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013) Much of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque (2011-present) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses. And given that the Evoque was their fastest-selling vehicle for a number of years, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the purist. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender. It’s actually still a capable thing

off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. The floppier Convertible was launched in 2016, and there’s also a three- and five-door version. We say stick to the latter, and avoid the 2WD model. What’s a Range Rover without four-wheel-drive?

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands. It’s a vehicle we will be giving our driven verdict on in the very near future, but for the meantime, we do know this much: the Velar is a fine-looking craft and is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace. It has greater off-road ability than the

aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...

£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).

Pros: Styling, engines, capability at pretty much everything Cons: Price

£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07-’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper RR

£43000-£130000 Versions: 3.0 SDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8, 3.0 SDV6 Hybrid. Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘15-present).

Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets

£14000-£48000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

£44000-£90000 Versions: D180 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D240 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D300 3.0-litre 6cyl turbo-diesel, P250 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P300 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P380 3.0-litre 6cyl petrol. Pros: Very stylish, interior, choice of engines, driven verdict soon... Cons: Could hurt the bigger Sport and L405. Prices stretch to near £100K

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched last year, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the SUV into new territory. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, they’ve taken one huge step towards doing so. Having driven the latest Discovery, we can confirm that it has lost none of its versatility and is comfortably the

most capable Land Rover currently on sale today. All of the engines have great flexibility and, along with its increasingly upmarket – and Range Rover-esque – interior, the new Disco 5 is one of the best machines to cover long distances in, whether that’s on the road or not. Like most new Land Rovers, it’s easy to overspend on the options, but a well-specced Sd4 is all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

39

£700-£10000 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98).

Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

£1500-£7000 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.

Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks standard for ‘03 onwards (model dependent) Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake

£3500-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6, 4.4 V8 (‘04’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’12), 3.0 SDV6 (‘12-present).

Pros: Off-road capability, usability for every occasion, luxury on later models, torque of 3.0-litre engines Cons: Maintenance costs, air compressor on D3s, D4s not so cheap

£38500-£70000 Versions: 2.0 Sd4, 3.0 Td6, 3.0 Si6 (‘16-present).

Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality, comfort Cons: Has lost its sense of value, steps on the toes of the Rangey

£18000-£45000 Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 / SD4 / eD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel, Si4 2.0 4cyl petrol.

Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of top models

Glories

Land Rover: The Everyday Classic is a celebration of Solihull’s finest in day-to-day life. Concentrating on vehicles from before the modern era, it looks at Series trucks, pre-Puma Defenders, ex-military Landies and live-axled Discoverys and Range Rovers still in regular use. Plenty has been written about hardcore modified off-roaders and polished classic show vehicles. The Land Rovers you’ll find in The Everyday Classic are real-world trucks that still work for their living. Many have been restored, modernised, converted, even customised – but all are perfect examples of why, even away from the extremes of the hobby, the Land Rover spirit endures.
