and Rover has introduced a new variation of the Range Rover Sport – the HST – which features a new, 400bhp petrol V6. The unit is helped by a mild hybrid system, that includes a 48-volt supercharger system to help reduce turbo lag, but can pair impressive performance with 30.5mpg – which isn’t bad for a fast Rangey. The 3.0-litre Ingenium unit is paired to an electric motor that harnesses energy during deceleration and stores it in the 48-volt battery, to then be reused through torque assist and reduce the CO2 emissions of the engine by reducing its workload.

Other features include start-stop functionality, to reduce emissions in heavier traffic, whilst the special edition HST model also has bespoke badging and carbon fibre trim on its bonnet. Like many recent Land Rover special editions, the colours on offer are Santorini Black, Fuji White, Indus Silver, Firenze Red and Carpathian Grey. Inside, there is a new colour pattern featuring suedecloth and HST badging. The new edition also features JLR’s safety features, which include advanced cruise control and high-speed emergency braking. There is also, of course, the latest version of the Terrain Response four-wheel drive system. On the market now, the HST pricing begins at £81,250 on the road.

Yorkshire lanes repaired for all after donation from 4x4 users

Ramsden Reopens

angers from the Yorkshire Dales National Park, supported by a team of volunteers, have completed repairs to eroded sections of the ancient Roman Road in Wensleydale – aided by the financial support from 4x4 drivers. ‘Surfacing and drainage works took place near Four Lanes End on what is locally known as the Cam High Road,’ explains the park authority. ‘The team then went over Wether Fell into Raydaleside to carry out repairs on Busk Lane, working from the junction with the Stake Road back to Carpley Green Farm. ‘A total of 700 tonnes of limestone aggregate was laid and rolled at the two sites. Culverts and drainage ditch-

es were also cleared of vegetation as part of the works.’ Busk Lane and the Cam High Road, both of which are BOATs, are among several highly popular multi-use rights of way in this area, and the work will benefit walkers and horse riders as well as motor vehicle users. ’The North Yorkshire group of the Green Lane Association (GLASS) and the North Yorkshire and Teesside group of the Trail Riders Fellowship (TRF) each donated £2500 towards the works,’ reports the park authority. ‘Last year, the groups donated a similar amount of money.’ YDNPA’s Matt Neale said: ‘This was essential routine maintenance which all too often can get overlooked. I would like the thank GLASS and the North Yorkshire and Teeside group

A FINAL FLOURISH

Breathing new life into this ultra-rare 6x6 Stage 1 of the TRF for their support. Both organisations have recognised that their recreational use of the National Park

has an environmental impact, and they continue to step up to the mark to help us maintain the byways.’

One of West Yorkshire’s most spectacular rights of way has been closed without warning for a period of 18 months – then opened again a couple of months later. The Experimental Traffic Regulation Order was imposed on Ramsden Road, a long and scenic lane near Holmfirth, late last year, but revoked in January following opposition by user groups. Ramsden Road is largely drivable in any 4x4, though one short section has become rather extreme. This section is scheduled for remedial work later in 2019. The lane’s reopening is good news for interested parties, as is the creation of a dedicated management committee by Kirklees Council’s rights of way department which will engage with all user groups when planning maintenance and so on. In the meantime, the GLASS stressed that the lane remains a very sensitive one and implores all drivers to exercise particular caution when using it.

Can I have a word...

I

have profound respect for the Land Rover you see on this month’s front cover and its commendable owner. Not only has the vehicle been restored into something that remains charming and authentic to the Series image, but the truck is also usable and doesn’t get treated like some diva of chinsy Italian exotica. I like that. I admire Tom Kench, too, the chap who owns Zebedee and the Land Rover in question. Tom uses Zebedee sparingly, of course, but the addition of a DIY dog guard and a mount for an electronic device tells you this isn’t a Green Oval whose future consists of years behind closed doors. Mind you, I couldn’t blame Tom if that’s what he decided was best. You see, part of my respect comes from Tom being an opportunist. Most of us, particularly with more years under our belts, may well rue the decision to have purchased that cheap Series I, or keep hold of that early Defender from years gone by. And for Tom, it could have been all too easy to let his dad’s old Series I pass him by as it stood there on a forecourt waiting for its next home. But thankfully for Tom – and his dad, Joe – that never happened. Tom took the plunge and brought back Zebedee to the Kench clan once again. Land Rovers may come and go, but some will stay with you forever. Should you have the opportunity to buy that sentimental Green Oval later down the line, then do it. Few of us rarely get the chance to buy back one of our past loves and if you can afford it, then it can feel like winning the lottery all over again. Happy reading. ollowing the inaugural Land Rover Legends show, the team have opened nominations for the National Land Rover Awards 2019, with three categories to be awarded to Green Ovals attending this year’s show. There will be specific awards for the Most Original, Best Restored and Best Bespoke Land Rovers, with nominees also invited to be part of a dedicated indoor exhibition at the Bicester Heritage event. At the event, which will be held across the weekend of 25 and 26 May, a panel of expert judges will select a winner and highly commended entry in each category. There will also be an award for the best club display. Several of the country’s biggest Land Rover owner’s clubs have already booked display space for the affair, including the SAS Pink Panther Register, Project Jay Preservation Group, Defender 130 Club and various other military and Series ownership groups to feast upon. The show will be celebrating four unique Land Rover birthdays this year. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Series IIA SAS Pink Panther entering into service, there will be what is expected to be the biggest gathering of surviving vehicles to date, with support from other military Series vehicles. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 100-inch prototypes, a gathering of these rare vehicles will also take place, and is too expected to be the largest of its type. Other anniversaries that will be venerated are the 30th of the Discovery and the 25th of one of the more contemptuous Solihull wagons, the P38A Range Rover. To nominate a vehicle for any of the awards, visit landroverlegends.com and cast your vote to be in with a shout.

The very latest gear you need for your Land Rover

Staying in Charge Land Rovers can get you anywhere, but can they keep your fridge cool and power your campsite? No. Not singlehandedly, anyway. But that could easily change with the fitting of the National Luna 12v Auxiliary Distribution Box. This box enables you to power a multitude of accessories through fused outputs, it’s a doddle to install and has a built-in battery volt meter. There are a lot of options, so I’ll list ‘em. You get two USB charging ports, a pair of DC sockets (one cigar and one hella), twin 50A grey coupler plugs and a quartet of pre-wired spare output ports. With one of these on board your Landy, there really isn’t much you couldn’t do, is there? As with all National Luna products in the UK, APB Trading are the ones to turn to. Head to expedition-equipment. com to find out how exactly this distribution box could transform life with your Land Rover.

Lighting pioneers Lazer Lamps have extended their product range to include integrated light kits for the latest Land Rover Discovery. The kit is designed with the ST4 Evolution driving lights in mind, which the brand has updated in the last year to include the latest road-legal LED lighting technology. Fitting is easy, too, with custom engineered grille mounts specific for the Disco 5, and the lights are ready to be wired straight into the vehicle’s high-beam signal wire. The OE quality product consists of weather and chemical proof brackets so you can rest assured that once the LEDs are fitted, they’re going nowhere. Unless you decide to take them off, that is, but with their experience supplying lights for racers in the WRC, that’s very unlikely.

The cinema isn’t what it used to be. In fact, right now in 2019 it’s a downright rip-off. You would think the cost of being dragged along to see yet another Disney remake would at least be reasonable – but no, you’d be mistaken. So, if you’re going to spend a bit of money on viewing something, you may as well make it something you’re actually going to enjoy. Take this DVD from Auto Heritage, for example, entitled Land Rovers Across The World. I guarantee this will be something more enthralling and you get the benefit of not even having to leave the house. Just drown out the sound of the complaining parties by turning it up. Anyway, you’ll want to know what this DVD is about exactly and, well, it all sets off with a trip down memory lane, looking at the early years of Land Rover through the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. The documentary covers the rise of the Series vehicles and how the British public took to the new starlet, as well as the rest of the world. Following the early years, the film then moves onto how people started to use them off-road and quickly recognised the obvious capacity the Land Rover had for reaching remote places never explored before. The First Overland London to Singapore expedition is touched upon, alongside a reflection on the club scene from decades gone by. Finally, the documentary starts to focus on the Land Rovers of today and covering all of Solihull’s latest developments, from the cutting-edge Range Rovers through to the extensive Reborn project taking place at JLR’s Classic Works. The insight is well worth a visit. Should this sound like a better way to spend an evening than watching Bambi 7, then you can have this DVD for £14.99 if you call the following number: 01625 520322. If you love your Land Rovers (more than Bambi) then it’s a good one for the collection.

If you’ve ever driven a Land Rover Defender, you’ll know that the controls can be cumbersome. Chief among these is often the clutch. But, Land Rover clutch experts LOF have got an answer for this. Their new for 2019 POWERspring helps the clutch pedal feel significantly lighter, as the spring is 45% stronger than the original fitted to TDCi Defender models. It can be fitted to TDCi, Td5 and 300Tdi Defender models and have the same effect of reducing the weight of the clutch pedal significantly. The kit is easy to install and comes with everything you’ll need for fitting, including three genuine Land Rover nylon bushes, the POWERspring itself and a LOFclutches car sticker for extra garnish on your Landy. For more details visit the website, lofcluthces.com, where you’ll also find a neat installation tutorial should you become stuck.

Hats Off

What is the real unsung hero in every single classic Land Rover? Fossil fuel. Soft-top or hard-top; long wheelbase or short; even petrol or diesel, Landies would be merely ornamental without it. So, rather than smacking everyone in the face with your undying love for all things from Solihull (they get it now), why not put on your diplomatic head. And then dress it in one of these Lucky Seven caps. They won’t know that you’re really paying homage to the life sauce that runs through the veins of every Land Rover you’ve ever loved. But you will. Further research can be undertaken at luckysevencaps.com. Go on, give them a break.

Second Wind

When Tom Kench saw his father’s old Series I lying helplessly on the forecourt of a local garage, there was no chance the Land Rover would not be coming home with him. Then, two years ago, Tom surprised his father by unveiling the same Land Rover in front of him, fresh from its second rebuild in 40 years The ‘temporary’ wooden tailgate that still forms part of Zebedee today

The unusual bulkhead gave away Zebedee’s identity to Tom’s brother

D

ecades ago, in the Kench household, one rule definitively signalled the coming of age. The rule was that as soon as you were tall enough to push the pedals all the way down, you learnt to drive. For Tom Kench, this brings back memories of his dad, Joe, taking him down to a local green lane on the outskirts of Wolvey, sitting on cushions in an old Series I Land Rover in an attempt to reach the pedals, but also experience the first sense of freedom. ‘I can remember it now, the smell of the hot mud on the exhaust wafting in through the canopy,’ recalls Tom. ‘Both Lucy (Tom’s sister) and I were taught how to drive down that lane.’ The Land Rover in question is the one pictured on these pages and it means a great deal to the Kench family. It was christened Zebedee because Tom’s mother owned a Series IIA many years ago that was called Florence. The Series I, with its smaller frame, was called Zebedee and both are characters from a programme you may or may not remember – The Magic Roundabout. Joe had owned a number of Land Rovers before Zebedee arrived back in the 1980s, but this Series I means more than all of them. ‘I’d been messing around with motors for a long time, but in the late ‘80s we started to rebuild Zebedee for the first time, with half a dozen guys helping me on the build in the back garden,’ shares Joe. ‘There’s a photograph of us all having to tip the Series I on its side to get it through the gap and out the garden when it was nearly complete,’ he smiles. Zebedee’s first rebuild wasn’t totally conventional. A temporary wooden tail-

Words: Mike Trott Pictures: Mike Trott and the Kench family gate was placed on the back and seeing as the original bulkhead had predictably rotted away, Joe employed the services of a local fabricator to come up with a replacement, although it didn’t possess the iconic vents letting air through in over the top of the dash. Sadly, in 1991, circumstances forced a change of ownership for Zebedee and for a number of years the Series I was just a memory to the Kench clan. However, back in 2006, Tom’s brother Dan happened to be driving past G.W. Motors near Nuneaton. A sorry but familiar sight caught his attention and after letting his brother know of his discovery, Tom made his way down to the garage and found Zebedee up for sale as spares or repairs – the wooden tailgate and unique bulkhead being the distinguishing features easily giving Zebedee away to an old friend. ‘As soon as I saw Zebedee, I said to myself, “I’m having it”,’ explains Tom. ‘I hadn’t been married long and it was a bit like how my dad came to own the Land Rover, having married my Mom not long beforehand.’ Life hadn’t been kind to Zebedee and the Land Rover was a shell of its former self. No one had wanted to buy the Land Rover either because of its unusual bulkhead. But now with the junior Kench holding the keys, Zebedee’s fortunes looked to be changing. ‘I slowly started to accumulate parts, including a IIA, Donna the Donor, for £500,’ explains Tom. Any salvageable parts were kept, but Donna mainly provided the engine, a 2.25 petrol. In November 2016, the second rebuild got underway at Bedworth Berts 4x4. At this point, Dad knew I owned

Zebedee again, but he didn’t know what we were planning…’ The following May, once work had been completed, Joe was escorted down to the lane where he had taught his children to drive and there before him stood a restored Zebedee for the second time. ‘We got him, we got him good,’ smiles Tom. ‘It was a bit of a family effort to keep it a surprise and get him down there, but it worked.’ Zebedee has been chopped and changed over the years, and following the second rebuild, it was now more of a gentle hybrid. A new front quarter was fitted and the axles were taken from an early Series II, but it has kept the wooden tailgate and bulkhead it was presented with all those years ago. So much for a temporary tailgate! This Series I Land Rover now leads the life of Riley, taking Tom and Joe out for a nice cup of tea and slice of cake when Tom isn’t doing his bit with Zebedee at the odd charity event. ‘The plan is to keep it so that my daughter will learn to drive in it, too,’ declares Tom. And if you ask Joe, there is no finer mule to learn in. ‘You’re sitting high up and having fun,’ states Joe. ‘It is driving, there’s no help. It’s your foot on the brake or the accelerator, there’s no gizmos.’ The lack of gizmos is just one of the many reasons why Zebedee found a place in this family many years ago. It has since been rebuilt, twice, and will continue to be treasured by the Kench family for years to come, ready for when those tiny patters want to start taking their first strides to independence.

Too many Land Rover builds out there end up being vulgar in style. You’ll frequently find companies going overboard on the garnish and it just doesn’t go. Thankfully, however, Arkonik know how to do things properly Words: Dan Fenn Pictures: Arkonik

ometimes, big-budget Land Rover rebuilds can look, well, a bit unconvincing. It’s possible to spend a shedload of cash on a Defender, but doing so doesn’t guarantee that it will turn out looking tasteful. There’s a fine line between the classy and the garish. Naturally, personal taste plays a big part in this – but if you want to design a 90 or 110 that people will appreciate, then the biggest thing you’ve got to do is preserve its authenticity. That’s exactly what Arkonik has done with this restored 110. Called the Archer, it was commissioned by a customer in Washington and built to spec by the Somerset-based specialist, all of whose vehicles are sourced in Europe and sent across the Atlantic. This particular 110 came from Greece, as they so often do. A benefit of this is that it’s not going to have lived on a constant diet of road salt, and of course it helps that the steering wheel is on the correct side for a future on the roads of America. Outside, it’s nicely restrained and finished in Land Rover’s familiar Coniston Green body with Java Black wheelarches. A Warn Zeon 10-S winch is probably the most obvious addition to the exterior, though black Mach 5 alloys with BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrains cut a dash too. The latter are

265/75R16 in size, so the Defender’s standard look isn’t compromised by any wannabe Tonka tendencies. Further adornments include the Satin Black KBX wing-top vents and Signature Grille, ebony Fire and Ice side steps, an LED work lamp and a NAS rear step. The winch is housed on a sensibly restrained A-bar which also carries the front mount for a heavy-duty steering guard, all of which helps give the truck a good, no-nonsense image. Inside, it’s all about the Ruskin leather trim in Vintage Thatch Brown which finishes off the seats, cubby box, door cards and gearshift gaiters. Said seats are heated up front and premium high-back jobs behind, and up top there’s a black suede headliner. The dash features an Alpine premium sound system with reversing camera – if you can take your eyes from the gorgeous 15” Evander wood-rimmed steering wheel. There’s a sunroof, as well as air-conditioning, and the gear knobs and door furniture are made from polished alloy. Just in case people aren’t noticing, the whole lot is lit up by an Ice White LED package. This all makes for one very special 110, but one that’s notable as much for what’s not on it as what is. There’s so much more that could have been fitted, both outside and in, to help make it stand out in a crowd – but the point is that standing out isn’t necessary when you’re buoyed along by a proper air of class. It’s not the crowd you want to impress – it’s the people who know. And if you know your Land Rovers, you’ll see that this 110 has authenticity written all over it.

Steve Whiting has only been into off-roading for a few years. But in that time, he’s built a Range Rover most people would be happy to call the result of their life’s work. Well, as he puts it, he needed a hobby...

T

he Range Rover Classic is a very iconic image. It stands tall, with purpose and majesty, an elder statesman of the 4x4 world that exudes… well, a touch of class. But if this stock image of the Range Rover Classic is at one end of the spectrum, what we have here comes from the opposite end. They’re light years apart, of course – though one is just as impressive as the other. Steve Whiting is the owner of this very non-stock Classic. Straight away, you know this isn’t the type of vehicle one would take to a local woodland with some of the chaps for a spot of pheasant shooting. It looks a lot more like something you’d see in the middle of a paintball battle – which is very apt, because Steve has owned a paintball business himself for the last 19 years.

You might assume this Rangey has seen the odd sortie itself, cruising up the high street while Steve’s mates hang out the back like bandits firing brightly coloured balls of paint at passers-by. It’s a nice image, right enough, but actually he just takes it to pay-and-play days and has fun off-roading instead. ‘It took two years to get to this stage,’ says Steve. ‘I went for a Classic Ranger for the build quality, but mainly for the shape of the vehicle and because it has more room than a Defender.’ While Slindon Safari isn’t a particularly small place, Steve’s Classic did its very best to try and dwarf even the most challenging sections and with its 37” Creepy Crawlers, it sure made its mark. The V8 engine lazily purring away under load as it crawls up the slopes is one truly enjoyable soundtrack, and

a symphony that is aided by the fact Steve uses two motorcycle exhausts to enhance the throbbing tones. So this truck has a substantial bark to it, and Steve is happy to voice his opinions as well on how he thinks a modded 4x4 should be. What started as a bobtail has been turned into a trayback, which he likes because ‘it makes it usable.’ He’s even been known to carry his friends around, sat neatly to either side of the spare wheel, though most playday site marshals would explode if they saw him doing it. We don’t think they were toting paintball guns at the time, but maybe that’s for the future. Not that mixing work with pleasure is necessarily what Steve’s about. ‘I think everyone needs a hobby,’ he says. ‘I’ve been off-roading for a few years now and I needed a new hobby that didn’t require too much fitness.’ Steve may be greener than some when it comes to off-roading, but he’s always been on the fringes ready to dive in. ‘I had a few Classics years ago and always thought it was a good base truck to do something with.’ And do something, he definitely has. ‘This truck is a lot more capable than it used to be. It was bobtailed initially before removing some of the panels to get them out the way. We then focused on making the rear cage, followed by the construction of the front cage. ‘I’ve never wanted it to be a money truck, though, otherwise it takes the fun out of it. You could buy everything for it, but it takes away the hands-on

Above: Steve’s LSE-derived 4.2-litre V8 is mainly standard, but the alternator is now a 24-volt unit and the air box is plumbed to a home-made snorkel Below: There’s a whole lot of flexibility in the rear suspension, thanks to a pair of heavy-duty springs wrapped around X-Spring coils. Note also the Polybush bump stops. The Pro-Comp shocks lurking behind, which are rose-jointed top and bottom on double-shear mounts, allow huge travel approach and the satisfaction of having built it.’ A Classic Rangey, then, that hasn’t had loads and loads of money thrown at it to get to a usable state: I bet you don’t hear that every day. ‘The Classic shape and quality of the workmanship is impressive. And I like the way the home-made roll cage follows the body contours – it finishes it off really well.’ Steve does a lot of his own spanner work, but is keen to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of Jonny from JPL Automotive. ‘My boy helps me out now as well, particularly with the heavy lifting these days. One of my best off-roading memories is when we went out for one of the

Above and Right: The Rangey’s chassis has been shortened front and rear; in each case, Steve tied it to the exo cage structure via a fabricated winch tray. Up front, his metalwork is home to a Bowmotor-powered Warn 8274, while at the back the Winchmax cover hides a Superwinch – not surprisingly, it’s synthetic ropes all-round first times and we completely misjudged the size of one “puddle.”’ Beginner’s luck didn’t show itself on that day, but trial and error is definitely part of the fun you get from off-roading. And if you’re going to set about conquering the landscape in any vehicle, why not use an icon like the Classic? Paintball guns an optional extra…

We photographed Steve’s Range Rover at Slindon Safari, run by offroad legend John Morgan, which is just off the A27 in West Sussex. It’s open every month for 4x4s and quads, and is one of the best playday sites anywhere in the UK. Check it out at www.4x4driving.co.uk or call 01903 812195.

Army Bred Have you ever wondered why Land Rovers made such good candidates for enrolling on a life in the Armed Forces? If you need any answers, just look at this modded military number from Overland & Highway

Words and Pictures: George Dove

T

here has been a long-running relationship between military service and Land Rovers. This is no surprise, Green Ovalled haunts can cope with the harshest of terrains and take serious punishment – they’re ideal soldiers. But, to make them better suited for service, the military Land Rovers would be bolstered somewhat. Well, we say bolstered, but despite this being a Land Rover on a 90” wheelbase that left Solihull in 1994 christened a Defender, it still features the rather old-hat 2.5-litre naturally aspirated diesel unit. ‘Why?’ I hear you scream, ‘They’re older than the Tdi and so rudimentary!’ Well, that was exactly

the point. You see, when you’re in the middle of a war zone, the last thing you want is complexity. But there’s more than meets the eye with this Defender. Initially, when it was built and sent into service in 1994, this Land Rover was a Truck Utility Light GS, which means it was the smaller version, aka a 90, while the GS stood for General Service. In this form, it served with the Gurkha regiment until it was released from active service in 2011 and registered with its first civilian number plate on 10 June. Out of the army, the 90 was cared for and restored by its new owner. This was the process that saw it fitted with the hard-top conversion, and it also

underwent a transformation to FFR spec – Fitted For Radio, to clarify. In this state it was taken to and displayed at shows, newly kitted out with additional aerials and two Clansman backpack radios that fitted onto a Dexion racking in the back. Sitting in the back there is also two tip-up seats mounted for use by the radio operators, whilst the original fire extinguisher and base of the rifle holders are still present. Up front, the early style black vinyl seats are in situ, along with a matching cubby box. Being an ex-MOD machine, the 90 would’ve initially had an odometer calibrated for kilometres. This has since been changed, however, but it still makes knowing the accurate figure dif-

Below: This particular 90 was a GS model, which has since been converted to carry the Dexion racking and radio equipment to make this an FFR 90

ficult. But, Peter Clarke of Overland and Highway, who recently sold the vehicle, did his best to get as accurate a figure as possible. ‘I went through all of the old MOT receipts and looked at what the odometer read – so I’d suggest it has only covered something in the region of 87,000-miles.’ As well as doing the paperwork and maths, Peter also filled us in a little bit more on what the Defender has been up to since retiring. ‘It used to belong to a race engineer and be used for family camping trips,’ shares Peter. ‘But it was swapped for a 110 for the extra space. ‘For a military Defender, it has excellent bodywork and the satin sheen

to the NATO Green paint is lovely. The bulkhead and footwells are all in good condition, too, and there hasn’t been any welding on the chassis either.’ This Land Rover, despite the conversion once it had earnt its freedom, will surely prove a sound investment for its new owners. Whether it’s destined to be paraded around at military shows, used as a family camper or just a passion project going forward. Having spoken to Peter and witnessed this Land Rover first hand, it makes one thing very clear. Whatever its history, whatever purpose has been served, a Land Rover will always be just that – a Land Rover. www.overlandandhighway.co.uk

Blood, Sweat, Tears and Glory

Words: Graeme Bell Pictures: Luisa Bell and Keelan Bell

As these words are typed, the characters in this story are currently preparing to enter Senegal. I say characters, because the lives that Graeme Bell and his family have are akin to the sort of tales you come across in bedtime literature, when monsters are still a thing in your closet. This, then, is the brief overview of a seven-year intercontinental journey of self-discovery

I

Above: The old steed, Mafuta, on the road in Mozambique, which was the Bell family’s transport before recently changing for a converted camper

sat in my Land Rover, stuck in Cape Town traffic. Another torrid day in the office under my skin, trapped in a sea of metal built for mobility, but going nowhere. I drove that same Land Rover from this port city to Dar es Salaam, my wife and children trusting me completely, by my side. For six months I had been liberated, I had been the man I was born to be. The sun set over a horizon I longed to chase while exhaust fumes filled my nose. I remembered the freedom of the open road, the daily, tangible, difficult reality of Africa, I remembered the Mozambican virus which had wracked my body, I remembered my children swimming blissfully in Lake Malawi and I remembered the ice-cold beer I had

shared with new friends in the Zambian bush. We had returned from that journey cloaked in dust and a film of joy, all too soon washed clean from our skins by the arduous monotonous demands of civilised life. ‘Sod it, Luisa. Let’s go.’ ‘Go where?’ ‘There, South America, let’s go there.’ It took almost two years to extract ourselves from the real world, to remove the straightjacket which we had once willingly worn and worked to wear. We sold all the crap, the business, the cars, everything except that with which Luisa could not part. We removed the children from school, cancelled the debit orders and prepared the Defender for the journey

THE TYRE SHED

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO TYRES FOR LAND ROVER ENTHUSIASTS

THE TYRE SHED

Intro

T

yres are something you need to have. Period. That is at least if you own anything that moves around on four wheels. And with Land Rovers in particular, having the right tyre on your truck can mean the difference in reaching your destination or not. It’s often worth reminding people that the tyres are the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road, so choose poorly and you could end up with a nasty ride and terrible driving experience. Choose wisely and you could transform your Land Rover into a driving sensation, especially away from the confines of tarmac. Head over to the next few pages and you’ll see a comprehensive list of the very best tyres on offer in the UK today, incorporating everything from performance SUV tyres, right through to the most extreme mud-terrain rubber. Plus, we’ve taken the liberty of narrowing down the price range you should expect to pay on each tyre.

Tyres are perhaps even more important on Land Rovers, seeing as it can be a difficult balance to find a tyre that performs suitably well off the road, yet remains well mannered on the road to not leave you regretting your purchase every time you set off for work.

The kit includes a storage case with a three-piece adaptor kit, spare valve

caps and even a pair of latex gloves. The RTC1000 Rapid Digital Tyre Inflator is available nationwide now, with what sounds like a wholly reason-

able suggested retail price of £49.99. Head to ringautomotive.com for more information, should you need any further convincing.

It isn’t just the act of inflation that it’s speedy at, either, as the digital screen makes it easy to command and the quick-set dial means you can begin the process with speed and not stress. THE TYRE SHED Terratoura – the all-terrain tyre that refuses to compromise

W

hen nowhere is off-limits to you and your truck, you need a tyre with real bite that doesn’t compromise on ride comfort and reliability. You need Terratoura. Davanti has spent years researching, developing and testing Terratoura to ensure its debut in the all-terrain market produced a perfectly balanced off-road/highway tyre capable of delivering premium performance and value for money. Extensive testing in extreme environments, from the Arctic Circle to dusty, arid desert conditions have demonstrated Terratoura’s adaptability and capability across the full spectrum of terrain types. ‘We are incredibly proud of the Terratoura,’ said Davanti Product Manager Gary Cross. ‘Myself and the team set out to design something without compromise. We wanted to create a tyre that was equally effective in the sub-zero tundra of the Arctic Circle, rocky, sandy deserts like the Atacama and boggy hillsides in the Scottish Highlands. ‘Once we handed it over to independent testing organisation Tread, the feedback we got was that we really had created something special.’ Ideal for critical applications in agriculture, emergency rescue, construction, energy and more. Terratoura’s

robust design means only the most extreme off-roading will push the tyres to their limits, while its enhanced compound provides predictable handling in wet and dry on-road conditions. The Terratoura also boasts the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) certification, a symbol of winter excellence which means its performance in snow and ice has met stringent industry-wide conditions. ‘Our paddock testing showed that thanks to Terratoura’s wider uniform contact patch it offers greater traction in a pasture setting, even in the wet whilst pulling a heavy load, rather than cutting deep into the surface,’ explained Gary. ‘Its side channels also expel mud and debris much more quickly so when Terratoura goes from paddock to surfaced road you almost instantly have unobstructed rubber-to-road braking performance. ‘Going on to achieve 3PMSF was a key milestone for Terratoura, too. Having that allows drivers using Terratoura for professional applications to keep it on all-year-round, even in countries where winter tyres are compulsory. ‘When winter closes in, Terratoura will keep on working, helping move teams around safely and in comfort whatever the weather or terrain.’ Davanti’s quest to produce the ultimate All-Terrain tyre saw Terratou-

ra tested at three of Europe’s most challenging independent test facilities IDIADA in Spain, Test World in Finland and Millbrook in the UK. Impressive results at IDIADA showed the tyres exceptional on-road performance while at Test World Terratoura was put through its paces in the most demanding Arctic conditions.

It was here it earned its impressive 3PMSF certification, putting it in an exclusive club of AT tyres certified for sub-zero conditions. Finally the product was taken to Millbrook in the spring of 2018 to complete further testing of its mud, sand traction, gravel braking and grass traction capabilities.

‘All-terrain tyres are being utilised in ever-wider applications across a range of leisure and industrial applications,’ says Gary. ‘For that reason they need to be capable, reliable and cost-effective. With Davanti’s Terratoura, that’s precisely what you get. No frills, just a tyre that does the job and will keep going in any environment.’

Davanti has spent years developing this All-Terrain tyre, applying the latest design and manufacturing innovation to develop a tyre as comfortable on the road, on the construction site, in the fields or up in the mountains.

ud-terrains come and mud-terrains go, but for almost four decades BFGoodrich has been the name behind the Mud-Terrain. Earlier this year the company launched its new Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 – the third-generation version of a tyre which has become a ‘Hoover’ brand in the world of off-roading. With the arrival of the KM3, BFG says it has ‘introduced technologies that further improve climbing, traction and toughness in the mud and over rock.’ The company promises a five percent improvement in traction on soft ground compared to the old KM2, thanks to ‘mud-phobic’ bars on the tyre’s shoulders which aid self-cleaning by ejecting compacted material. They’re aided in this by the tyre’s ‘Terrain-Attack’ tread pattern, whose large blocks are designed to grip on to hard ground, or bite into softer surfaces, whatever the angle of approach. BFG says the tyre’s compound makes it eight percent more effective than the KM2 over rocks, with a ‘Linear Flex Zone’ designed to wrap around hard surfaces when running at low pressures. Performance over muddy and rocky surfaces alike is aided by notches in the tyre’s shoulders, which flow down into a ‘Traction-Armor Sidewall

Sculpture’ whose reinforced structure helps prevent damage to the most vulnerable part of the carcass. The sidewalls themselves are now an astonishing 27% tougher than the previous model’s, thanks to BFG’s CoreGard Max technology – as used on its Baja T/A KR3 desert-racing tyres – which helps prevent splitting or puncturing, with increased thickness to protect the ‘critical sidewall failure zone.’ BFGoodrich says the KM3 ‘was designed to conquer the toughest offroad challenges with extreme sidewall protection, pinch shock resistance and chip-and-tear resistance on gravel.’ But just as importantly, it also offers ‘solid street performance and acceptable on-road noise levels for the drives to and from the trail.’ ‘The KM3 tyre is designed for extreme toughness and traction and is essential equipment for serious offroad enthusiasts,’ says BFG general manager Harold Phillips. ‘Whether

simply driving for off-road fun, or the extreme capability to access outdoor activities, this tyre was made to take drivers anywhere they want to go.’ The KM3 was initiated through a phased launch, which ultimately was finalised with a total of 42 sizes being made available, 21 of them being new to market. Not all versions are available here in the UK, but you can stay find out which BFGoodrich tyres suit your Land Rover by heading to their website – just head to the following: www.bfgoodrich.co.uk.

Above: Luisa piloting the Defender back in Tanzania across the Atlantic. In November 2012 we escaped on a jet plane and arrived in The New World. The Defender joined us in Uruguay and over the next two and a half years we circumnavigated South America, gasping in the beauty of the tips of the Andes, soaking the moisture of the Amazon jungle and shivering through the gales of Patagonia. The vehicle broke, we ran out of money, we faced down government thugs in Venezuela and fell deeply, madly in love with a continent which we would call home tomorrow – if there were not entire continents still to explore. Slowly, day-by-day, we transformed as if from a cocoon, we grew and broke and were reborn under a blue sky. We were reinvented, I as a writer, my wife as a photographer and our children as free spirits. We were no longer South African or white, or rich or poor – we were stateless, free agents of the universe, limited only by our imagination. And the fuel in the tank. Our first book paid our way through Central America to Alaska and back down to Mexico. We needed a break. The road teaches but also takes, living in a tent loses it lustre after four years, you need to stop, think, re-evaluate, plan. In Mexico’s San Pedro Mártir mountains we again changed – from travellers to professionals, eager to learn and teach and grow and achieve the impossible.

Six months after working day and night on new projects we emerged from our seclusion ready for the next stage in our story. With our own hands we converted the Land Rover into a globe-roaming super camper, capable of providing shelter and protection and the ability to travel to even the most remote corners of the planet. We have never before worked as hard. We again crossed the Atlantic and soon found ourselves on the shores of the Mediterranean, the snow falling while I wrote my third book, cosy in the camper, Luisa working tirelessly to deliver our story to a new market, becoming a film maker while the children prepared themselves for the world. Crossing into Asia, our son chose to become a man, choosing that it was now time to meet the world on his own terms, he is ready to make his own mark and we are delighted that we have filled him with a courage and curiosity which cannot be contained. He will now go off into the world while we continue to discover our own until he returns, understanding us better than he could have before. He is with us as we drive from Europe to Africa via the West Coast. The future is our own and we will write the story. A bird set free. We Will Be Free. The Bell family live an incredible lifestyle and their adventures are documented in the books Graeme has written. They are experienced overlanders and ideal candidates from whom to absorb knowledge with regards to traversing Planet Earth. If you are a free spirit yourself or just looking for inspiration, visit www.a2aexpedition. com/books, where you’ll find all of Graeme’s works of literature.

Balancing Act

ust when you thought there may be a Land Rover out there free from foibles, the news hits you like a shopping trolley being rammed into your ankles by an oblivious pensioner: the Freelander 2 is like any other Green Oval machine – it will cost you money at some point or another. One of the possible complaints FL2 owners may have to sort out is the rear differential and Haldex unit needing to be replaced. There shouldn’t be any noticeable noise coming from the diff, but if you’re encountering any hums or whines, especially at low speeds, then it could

be you need to seek an expert eye to evaluate the situation. The Haldex unit is responsible for the direction of the torque to the rear wheels and if it starts to fail, features such as the Terrain Response can be affected. It’s not a cheap job if you’re replacing both, with a cost of around £800 including labour. But if you insist on driving a Land Rover...

Start by removing the rear tyres and disconnecting the rear section of the exhaust through to the central silencer 2. There will be a number of nuts, clips and rubber mountings that need to come off to unhinge the back box... 3. ...But you should end up with the following once you’ve successfully disconnected it 4. Now you need to take the screws out of the propshaft, there are six in total with three on each side

5. The lower suspension arms need to be detached, with two bolts needing to come out behind each rear brake 6. Once that’s done, you can ease the driveshafts out from the diff on either side. You’re okay to leave them suspended 7. Next up is the cradle supporting the diff. There’s two bigger bolts each side and four smaller underneath. Remove 8. The propshaft then needs to be taken off, but if the sleeve sticks, as in this scenario, then there is a way around it

Time to say Goodbye Words and Pictures: Tim Gibson

W

hen the call comes, I feel happy and sad at the same time. It brings news of a fantastic work opportunity, the sort of thing that makes you dance around the kitchen whooping with excitement. But the downside is that it involves travelling across the girth of England on a regular basis: the gig’s in Suffolk, and I live (rather inconveniently in the circumstances) in Somerset. And as much as the Freelander 2 is a wonderful place to spend time, it just won’t be cost-effective as a county-crossing steed. The time, then, has come. You’ve been on this journey with me, dear reader, over many a long month. You’ve witnessed my elation at finally having a Land Rover in my life. My excitement at testing its mettle, off-road and on. My joy at sharing a love of all things Lode Lane with my son. And my pleasure in writing about our adventures on the pages of this esteemed journal. And now it’s all coming to an end. My head has been turned by a gleaming

white Volvo V40. I’ve been led astray by the promise of 60mpg, free toad tax and a driver’s seat designed by an orthopaedic surgeon – not to mention a 12-month warranty and fixed-price servicing. I’ve let you down, friends. I’ve betrayed everything we stand for. I’m supposed to be bigger than this, an exemplar: a man so committed to the Land Rover ownership project that I’ll forgo comfort, frugality and performance for the sheer gut-tingling joy of seeing a green oval on the steering wheel before me. And so I’ve fallen short, of everything you expect of me. And all I can do is apologise, and pledge my continued allegiance to the cult of Solihull. Okay, so I was only ever an associate member, being as my Land Rover wasn’t a proper example of the marque like a Defender or early Discovery. But I enjoyed the feeling of camaraderie between us, the barely detectable raise of a finger when meeting another Land Rover driver on a country lane, the casual conversations about tyre tread patterns in service-station car parks, the endless trips to independent repairers to have stuff bolted back into place.

I’ll miss those moments. I’ll miss being a part of the fraternity of Landy lovers. But perhaps, when my bank balance recovers, I’ll be able to join in a different guise. My son has already started eyeing up Series IIIs. He and I have worked out that we’ll be around £200 a month better off by driving a Volvo hatchback rather than an 11-year-old Freelander. Sounds like more than enough to run a classic Land Rover as a third vehicle. Time will tell. But rest assured that, while you won’t be seeing the Gibson Freelander on these pages after this month, you haven’t seen the back of me. I’ll be attending to my enthusiasm by writing regular stories about every aspect of the Land Rover scene, and off-roading more generally. So if you’ve been breathing a sigh of relief while reading this, glad at the thought of finally being free from my jottings, then I apologise. The Land Rover is gone, but I am here to stay. After all, some passions can’t be switched off. They’re just expressed in a different way. Next month: how to pass a category B+E driving test

All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy

Old Tricks

f you need a trusty workhorse, then it’s understandable for you to be considering one of the many pick-up trucks currently on the market. The problem is, you’ll be looking whilst wearing a grimace, because we both know you don’t really wish to join the dark side. And you needn’t have to, my friend. Instead of looking forwards at newer stuff, look back at the Series III 109”. You’re on safe ground here: it wears a green oval, it’s simple to maintain and it

will cost you a lot less to buy than a new pick-up. You could even find yourself free from tax! The old 109” is sure to endure any rough terrain you might encounter on your daily errands around the farm, forest or building site, and you know there’s plenty of specialists out there waiting to help you out should you need a spare part or two. These vehicles were always great workhorses – but more importantly, they never stopped being great either.

Insure your Series III pick-up with Adrian Flux from £85

* Based on a non-working farm vehicle covering 3,000 miles per annum inc. green lane, off-road cover, no C&Cs and £100 excess. Commercial farm use would lift premium to £150 approx.

Series I (1948-1958) If you want to be the owner of a vehicle that oozes heritage like no other, then surely a Series I Land Rover is the way to go. The Series I Land Rover – particularly in its 80” guise – is arguably the most sought after Land Rover for purists and collectors alike. Its 1940’s engineering gives it a real charisma, but consequently, parts aren’t as readily available as they once

were. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but then a finished example will fetch mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover, because with restored and cherished examples now retailing where they’re at, preservation is the aim of the game. The rarer and earlier the vehicle, the higher the price tag gets. But can you really put a price on such an icon?

Series II/IIA (1958-1971) In 1958, the second-generation Land Rover was born and along came the barrel sides which we came to recognise on even the very last Defenders. Today the Series II or IIA is a more affordable prospect than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm that makes it a hit with enthusiasts. The prices are on the increase, however, as these 50-year-old vehicles start to come into their own as a collec-

tor’s item. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines, certainly the 2.0-litre diesel, were underpowered and noisy. The Series II/IIA carries a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement over the Series I. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks.

Series III (1971-1985) Following on from the Series IIA, the Series III emerged in 1971 with a few cosmetic tweaks and safety features to freshen up the model. Headlights were shifted out to the wings in-line with new legislation and the dash received a bit of padding to hide the new safety bar across the top of the bulkhead – not sure it’s a five stars on the Euro NCAP scale, though. The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar

to the Series II in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout its production, although in 1980 the 2.25 motors switched to a more durable five bearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80”s

Pros: As a resto it’s a sound investment, some examples now MOT exempt, more desireable than SIII Cons: Bulkheads can rot with ease, check suspension leaves for seizing

£2500-£25000 Versions: 88”, 109”. 2.25 4cyl petrol, 2.25 4cyl diesel. 2.6 6cyl petrol produced until 1980. Stage One V8 used detuned version of the 3.5 V8 (‘79-‘85). Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership, still has the Series pedigree, parts still widely available Cons: Not as desireable as earlier Series models

Lightweight (1968-1984) Possibly the ugly duckling of the Series Land Rover family – but that doesn’t mean to say you won’t find much love for the Series Lightweights. These military-derived vehicles can be easily distinguished from the regular Series Land Rovers, with visibly more angular wings and a frontal appearance that does divide opinion when you and your mates are in the pub. To mimic the civvy Series machines,

the SIII LWT – built from 1972 onwards – also had its headlights switched out to the wings. These Series Lightweights throw up an extra dimension to Land Rover ownership, with military history and touches often machine-gunning the vehicle. It means you get a Land Rover that could have a few more stories to tell – and you have something that stands out from the crowd.

Forward Controls (1962-1978) Only serious enthusiasts need continue reading here. Ownership of any Forward Control is not for the faint-hearted. These leviathans are expensive to run and trying to get hold of some of the parts can be, quite frankly, a bit of a nightmare! Clubs can help here, though, as is often the case with any Land Rover. These vehicles offer substantial

payloads if that’s the sort of thing you’re after, but will also tick the boxes for huge, unnecessary and hilariously addictive fun. If you’re going to go the whole hog then why not buy a 101FC. You’ll have a V8 engine harping away underneath you (literally) and people are likely to clear out of your way when they see you coming in their mirrors. Surely that’s reason enough to buy one?

Ninety/One Ten (1983-1990) The icon of the 4x4 world. This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early examples of the Ninety and One Ten are worth keeping hold of, providing they’re in good condition – but you’ll be searching far and wide for examples that are. This was the birth of the Defender, despite not being christened officially

until 1990, and as such these Land Rovers had coil-sprung suspension, new engines – although they were still terribly underwhelming – and offroad capability that has still yet to be matched today. A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 NA version with low miles and good history. They’re robust and as simple as they come.

Defender Tdi (1990-1998) In 1990, the Defender name emerged and for the first time it meant that no longer was a Defender being powered by a feeble hamster in a wheel. If you’re after a 200 Defender, though, you might get a 200 unit but check whether it’s a Defender engine. Replacing blown units with a Disco 200Tdi is popular, so check the arrangement of the turbo and manifold to see which one you’ve got.

After the 200 followed the 300Tdi, a revised version with a little more refinement, but just the same durability. Properly maintained, they can last for decades. Look around for one with full service history and you could find yourself a keeper. Some Tdi Defenders have received galvanised chassis and even bulkheads, and these are the type of Defender you should be after.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) Following on from the Tdi era, Land Rover issued the Defender with its Td5 engine from 1998 to 2007. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure that any mods have been done properly. Remaps, EGR valve deletes and uprated intercoolers are a few exam-

ples of what many have been subject to. Lots of power doesn’t always mean happy faces. The rear of the chassis has frequently been called into question, so protect the rear crossmember if it’s in good shape, or else face the consequences. With minimal electrics, the Td5 Defender is still a DIY machine and you’ll be working on one of Land Rover’s most notable masterpieces.

£3500-£25000 Versions: 88”. IIA (‘68-’72), III (‘72-’84). 2.25 4cyl petrol engine.

Pros: Not like all other Series Land Rovers out there, military background, uses lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: Styling isn’t to everyone’s taste, can be pricey owing to their exclusivity over regular models

£8000-£35000 Versions: Series IIA (‘62-’66), Series IIB (‘66-’72), 101 (‘72-’78). 2.6 6cyl petrol engines for IIA/IIB, 3.5 V8 petrol for 101.

Pros: Soundtrack, presence, exclusivity Cons: Fuel bill, fuel bill, parking conundrums... fuel bill

£2000-£15000 Versions: Ninety (‘84-’90), One Ten, 127 (‘83-’90). 2.25 4cyl petrol (‘83-’85), 3.5 V8 (‘83-’90), 2.5NA 4cyl diesel (‘84-’90), 2.5 4cyl petrol (‘85-’90), 2.5TD (‘86-’90). Pros: Good ones are now worth saving, same ability as Tdi Defenders Cons: Not many left in good condition, engines underpowered

£3200-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (1990- 1998). 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘90-’94). 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98). Pros: Excellent off-road, arguably the very best engines, old-school electrics Cons: Units are getting rare, many have been used hard; Tdi it might be, but that doesn’t mean rustproof

£4000-£25000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (1998-2007). Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Off-road capability, power, reliability (generally) Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices at the moment

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) The last of the Defenders were fitted with Ford Transit engines – first the 2.4 TDCi, followed by the 2.2 TDCi, brought in to meet Euro V emission standards and keep the Defender alive for another few years. Sadly, these engines denoted the Defender’s swansong, the twilight of its days. They were fitted with six-speed gearboxes, still had phenomenal off-road capability and even made the

Defender a nice place to be. But they were still very much Defenders. The era of blinging also began and you can find special editions out there costing obscene amounts of money. You will pay a premium for these Defenders, especially since the end of production. But if you can grab a 2.2 TDCi and start preserving it now, you may well never see depreciation. We’re no financial advisors, though...

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) We haven’t always held the Freelander 1 in the highest regard here at The Landy, but as market prices constantly change, so too can our opinion on certain vehicles. With examples attainable from as little as £500, the Freelander 1 represents a cheap gateway into Landy ownership. There are a few issues to be aware of, though, such as the viscous coupling, which is expensive to replace

and can be upset by simply having mismatched tyres on your axles. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures, but today’s replacements are much more robust. The V6 is thirsty and the 2.0Di is gutless, so opt for a TD4 – but check the condition of the injectors first. Buy an FL1 and you even get a Landy that’s decent off-road and doesn’t carry the usual trait of rusting after five minutes.

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) Most people will turn their noses up at Freelanders because they’re not properly recognised as true Land Rovers. But while you should turn your nose up at the FL1, the Freelander 2 actually makes for a much smarter proposition than you may think. Because of it being replaced by the Discovery Sport, the FL2 is now an affordable option that still offers good levels of refinement, a strong 2.2-litre

four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a level of practicality that means it can make for a great family vehicle. Plus it’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there. Prices are now falling thanks to the Freelander name disappearing from the production line, but for £10,000 you can now get a capable all-rounder that is actually pretty adept off-road and yet still economical to run.

Range Rover Classic (1970-1996) The Range Rover Classic is one of those vehicles that you could theoretically still use everyday, even now in the 21st Century. If you’re running a V8, however, that may not be such a wise idea. Classic Range Rovers still provide a relatively refined and great drive today, but they can be thirsty if you’re not in one of the various turbo-diesel examples. That said, if you own one and it’s in

good condition – look after it, as it will only appreciate. These vehicles are popular with collectors. Unfortunately, in terms of spare parts, many have succumb to corrosion or have been abused off-road to the point of no return. While an early ‘70s Classic may not be attainable for everyone, tidy examples of the late four-door versions can make for an equally tidy investment.

Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) Many people believe the P38A Range Rover to be a bit of a menace – and often it’s completely justified. Lights on the dashboard, air suspension failure, head gasket failure... the list can start to look like a cartoon bill. Still, it’s not all doom and gloom with the P38. In fact, if you find one in good working order, it’s sensational. Service history is a must, and if you’re going to own one then some

diagnostic equipment is going to be a better companion than a spanner. Avoid the diesel variant as the engine was adopted from a BMW saloon and isn’t up to the task of the extra weight a Range Rover carries. Go for a 4.6 HSE, it’s actually more economical than the 4.0 V8 and you’ll get all the toys (working or not). Or you could try and find an anniversary model or even a Holland & Holland...

£7000-£60000 Versions: Defender 90, 110, 130 (2007-2016). 2.4 TDCi (‘07-’12), 2.2 TDCi (‘12-’16).

Pros: Better emissions (marginally), more creature comforts, same off-road prowess Cons: Price, more electrics, last of the breed

£500-£4000 Versions: 1.8 4cyl petrol (‘97-’05), 2.0Di 4cyl diesel (‘97-’00), TD4 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘00-’06), 2.5i V6 petrol (‘00-’05).

Pros: Cheap to buy, no major rust issues, surprisingly good off-road Cons: There are better Land Rovers out there, FL2 showed the FL1 how it should have been done

£2900-£21000 Versions: 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel, available in two- or four-wheel drive, 3.2 V6 petrol (‘07-’09).

Pros: Better off-road than you may anticipate, reliability, refinement, economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

£1500-£50000+ Versions: Two-door (‘70-’85), four-door (‘81-’96), LSE (‘92-’96). 3.5 V8 petrol (‘70-’86), 3.5 EFI V8 petrol (‘86-’89), 3.9 EFi V8 (‘89-’96), 2.4 VM turbo-diesel (‘86-’92), 200Tdi (‘92-’94), 300Tdi (‘94-’96). Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust (again), availability of parts for early models, V8 thirst

£1600-£9000 Versions: 4.0 V8 petrol, 4.6 V8 petrol, 2.5 6cyl turbo-diesel.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land Rover that doesn’t rust. Could even P38 prices rise soon? Cons: Electrics. Nuff said

Range Rover L322 (2002-2012) Compared to the P38, the L322 Range Rover was a saint. Generally. Its electronic aids were far less temperamental and it delivered a new level of luxury to four-wheeled motoring. The Td6 receives mixed reviews: some say it’s underpowered while others say it’s the best of the bunch. Common sense would steer you towards a TDV8, either the 3.6 or 4.4, but these are the L322s holding out for

strong money. Notably, the petrol V8s are lingering with very appealing price tags, but don’t think running one would be cheap. As with many 21st Century Land Rovers, they have lost their accessability for the home mechanic. Drivetrain faults are becoming more frequent, so you need to look for that FSH. As a car, however, it’s probably all the car you’ll ever need.

Range Rover L405 (2012-present) If you want the very best in automotive luxury, then look no further. The latest incarnation of Land Rover’s flagship Range Rover weighs a whopping 400kg less than its predecessor thanks to the use of an aluminium body, which helps on mpg – although owning one of these suggests that your cash flow isn’t particularly an issue. This is the last word in elegance and majestic motoring. All the engines

supply copious amounts of power to your right foot, while the L405 hasn’t lost any of its off-road pedigree... even if taking one off-road is like asking your alcoholic friend to a wine-testing session. They could comfortably partake, but probably shouldn’t. Prices are still only right for Premier League footballers and people with a link to the royal family. If you fit into that category, then we envy you.

Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Your maintenance bill

£45000-£150000 Versions: 3.0 TDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol, 3.0 SDV6 hybrid (‘14-present).

RR Sport 1 (2005-2013) Much of the Range Rover Sport was borrowed from the Disco 3, in fact it shared virtually identical underpinnings, whereas today’s RR Sport uses actual Range Rover foundations. Nevertheless, Land Rover put a Range Rover in a tracksuit and attempted to make a handler out of it. To some extent they succeeded, although it’s no sports car despite what it says on the back of the vehicle.

It can play the leisure vehicle very well, though, and will go off-road like the best of them. If you’re going to buy one, then you need to love it for itself, becausse a Discovery of the same era is more practical, while a full-fat Range Rover is always going to carry an extra layer of prestige. They’re still a good all-rounder, though, and now relatively affordable.

RR Sport 2 (2013-present) The second-generation Range Rover Sport has also been on a diet to save over 400kg, just like the current daddy Range Rover, the L405. That means that even this big bruiser is relatively economical when spec’d with the SDV6 motor. Some won’t like the vulgar and flamboyant posture, while others will adhere to the smart, yet mean styling. But no one can knock the Sport for its

performance. It feels incredibly light for such a big car, and if you’ve robbed a bank and can afford the SVR version, it’s as good round a race track as it is on a green lane. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Removing limbs is possibly the most feasible option, or wait ten years and see if the prices have come tumbling down off those high pedestals.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-2019) When the Range Rover Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses. And given that the Evoque was their fastest-selling vehicle for a number of years, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the purist. They don’t much like the fact Victoria Beckham was involved in the designing of it, nor that it is the polar opposite to a Defender. It’s actually still a capable thing

off-tarmac, but it would rather not go down that route. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, they have decent residuals. The floppier Convertible was launched in 2016, and there’s also a three- and five-door version. We say stick to the latter, and avoid the 2WD model. What’s a Range Rover without four-wheel-drive?

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-present) There is a new Range Rover Evoque due to hit the roads of the UK any week now, but you’d do well to tell the difference between the new model and the outgoing Evoque. Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. The main highlight of the new Evoque, however, is the fact the majority of

the range is made up of mild hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base front-wheel drive D150 Evoque escapes the electrification. Our first drive review of the new Evoque will be appearing in The Landy in due course, by which point we’ll be better positioned to inform you whether this Mk2 version is any good or not. Early signs, however, are promising...

Range Rover Velar (2017-present) And so the Range Rover family welcomes its fourth model, confidently making it the most prominent of Land Rover’s sub brands. It’s a vehicle we will be giving our driven verdict on in the very near future, but for the meantime, we do know this much: the Velar is a fine-looking craft and is based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace. It has greater off-road ability than the

aforementioned (good for Green Oval enthusiasts) and it is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. Other than that, you do pay a premium for the suave looks...

£7000-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6 (‘05-’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’11), 3.0 SDV6 (‘11-’12), 4.4 V8 petrol (‘05-’07), 3.6 TDV8 (‘07-’10), 4.2 supercharged V8 (‘05-’09), 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘09-’12). Pros: Decent performance from both engines and chassis, a lot of car for your money Cons: Not as practical as a Disco, not as prestigious as a proper RR

£43000-£130000 Versions: 3.0 SDV6, 4.4 SDV8, 5.0 supercharged V8, 3.0 SDV6 Hybrid, 2.0 P400e Plug-in Hybrid. Range Rover Sport SVR 5.0 supercharged V8 (‘15-present).

Pros: Feels light considering weight, engines, almost as luxurious as its bigger brother Cons: You’ll need deep pockets

£12500-£50000 Versions: 2.2 SD4 (‘11-’15), 2.0 Si4 4cyl petrol, 2.0 TD4 (‘15-present).

Pros: Economy, handling, beats rivals off-road Cons: Not as practical as the new Discovery Sport

£31600-£55000 Versions: D150 FWD 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D150, D180, D240 AWD MHEV, P200, P250, P300 AWD MHEV.

Pros: TBC Cons: TBC

£44000-£90000 Versions: D180 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D240 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo-diesel, D300 3.0-litre 6cyl turbo-diesel, P250 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P300 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, P380 3.0-litre 6cyl petrol. Pros: Very stylish, interior, choice of engines, driven verdict soon... Cons: Could hurt the bigger Sport and L405. Prices stretch to near £100K

To advertise in The Landy, call our team on 01283 553244

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) The earliest version of the Discovery was aimed purely at providing a middle ground between the agricultural Defender and the luxury, upper-class Range Rover. It carried much of the Defender’s capabilities, but added more refinement and a driving experience more suitable to families – but without a Range Rover price tag. Blessed with the same wonderful

Tdi engines, the Discovery saved Land Rover and hit back at offerings from other nations by being an affordable all-rounder. And that still holds true even today. Early Discovery 1s in fine condition are now classics and will continue to appreciate. We would recommend trying to find a tidy and later 300Tdi example, but watch out for body rust – the boot floor, arches and wings etc.

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Following on from the first-generation Discovery, in 1998 Land Rover gave its family SUV some minor cosmetic tweaks and a whole new power unit in the shape of the Td5. The engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer out of the box, although it does lend itself to being tuned – just make sure any mods have been done properly. You can also buy a V8, but

the fuel bill isn’t going to be welcome, plus they’re more temporamental. Unlike on the D1, its the chassis that’s the problem, not the body. We all know that Discos make for a great tow car, and consequently many of the rear chassis on D2s have dipped their rears into the sea. Not all of them live to tell the tale... Get a later example for more creature comforts and difflocks too.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) The Discovery went through a dramatic revamp for its launch in 2004, but it came out the other side as one hell of a vehicle. Greatly improved in terms of power and refinement, the Disco 3 received the relatively economical 2.7 TDV6 engine (although the thirsty 4.4 V8 petrol was an option) and became the first Land Rover to be given Terrain Response. If you need one vehicle in

your life, this could be the one that ticks the most boxes at once. Be weary of maintenance costs, especially as you approach the 105,000mile/seven-year mark that means the timing belt is due – it’s a body-off job! The 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines are even better, with monumental amounts of torque. Luxury has also increased significantly in later examples. A later SDV6 model is best.

Discovery 5 (2017-present) Launched last year, this latest Discovery has received high praise in taking the SUV into new territory. Land Rover needed to improve economy in particular with this edition of the Disco, and having chopped 480kg from the kerbweight, they’ve taken one huge step towards doing so. Having driven the latest Discovery, we can confirm that it has lost none of its versatility and is comfortably the

most capable Land Rover currently on sale today. All of the engines have great flexibility and, along with its increasingly upmarket – and Range Rover-esque – interior, the new Disco 5 is one of the best machines to cover long distances in, whether that’s on the road or not. Like most new Land Rovers, it’s easy to overspend on the options, but a well-specced Sd4 is all you really need.

Discovery Sport (2015-present) Brought in to replace the ageing Freelander 2, the Discovery Sport was the vehicle that turned the Discovery brand into a family. It has come to be so much more than a re-badged Freelander, though. For starters, the Discovery Sport has seven seats (just), drives better than a Freelander 2 and is now more refined thanks to the Ingenium Td4 engine. Land Rover is now churning out

substantial units of the baby Disco, now even matching the Evoque for pace as one of the fastest-selling vehicles to carry a green oval. It’s a more usable vehicle than the Evoque, though, and carries less of the feministic stigma that often surrounds the Evoque. Grab a cleverly-spec’d SE Tech for a car that can be as practical as a daddy Disco, but for a more attractive price.

£700-£10000 Versions: 200Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘89-’94), 300Tdi 2.5 4cyl turbo-diesel (‘94-’98), 3.5 V8 (‘89-’93), 3.9 V8 (‘94-’98).

Pros: Almost as every bit as good as the Defender off-road, price, practicality Cons: The body rusts like it’s been doused in sea water

£1500-£7000 Versions: Td5 2.5 5cyl turbo-diesel, 4.0 V8.

Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, better comfort than D1, diff locks standard for ‘03 onwards (model dependent) Cons: Rear chassis crumbles like its dessert namesake

£3500-£40000 Versions: 2.7 TDV6, 4.4 V8 (‘04’09), 3.0 TDV6 (‘09-’12), 3.0 SDV6 (‘12-present).

Pros: Off-road capability, usability for every occasion, luxury on later models, torque of 3.0-litre engines Cons: Maintenance costs, air compressor on D3s, D4s not so cheap

£38500-£70000 Versions: 2.0 Sd4, 3.0 Td6, 3.0 Si6 (‘16-present).

Pros: Most technologically-advanced Land Rover to-date, keeps Discovery practicality, comfort Cons: Has lost its sense of value, steps on the toes of the Rangey

£18000-£45000 Versions: SD4 2.2 4cyl turbo-diesel (Jan ‘15 - Aug‘15), TD4 / SD4 / eD4 Ingenium 2.0 4cyl turbo-diesel, Si4 2.0 4cyl petrol.

Pros: More practical than an Evoque – and less vulgar, seven seats, still great off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals, price of top models

Britpart performance springs are high quality, versatile and competitively priced - the right choice when replacing the old sagging original springs. Developed by one of the world’s top spring manufacturers these high quality, powder coated yellow springs have been designed with the needs of today’s Land Rover owners in mind. Britpart performance lifted springs have the added benefit of improving your vehicles approach and departure angles which in turn allows you to overcome more obstacles when offroading. As Land Rovers are often working vehicles as well as the family car, uprated springs must offer the ability to carry loads, handle off-road terrain and provide a good ride on road. The progressive springs offer a compliant ride when lightly loaded, but firm up as the load increases.

Britpart yellow springs are designed for the enthusiast who wants a performance spring without having to raise the vehicle. They offer a firmer ride with less body roll, ideal for a vehicle with uprated performance or one used for carrying heavy loads. The springs are designed to offer full articulation off-road with a compliant ride. Developed by one of the world’s top spring manufacturers these high quality, powder coated yellow springs have been designed with the needs of today’s Land Rover owners in mind.

Britpart Performance - 1” Lower Springs

Reduce the ride height of your Land Rover by 1” (25mm) by fitting these lowered springs. By lowering your vehicle it will help reduce body roll as well as giving your vehicle a more sporty squat stance. The springs are designed in line with the standard spring rate specification. Finished in powered coated orange paint.
