As it turns out, though, perhaps more people should try it. Because Wallis Defenders’ big white Puma is definitely very cool indeed…

3 Bond Edition becomes the ultimate Defender – for just 15 UK buyers
ood evening, r Defender. ’ve been expecting you. There was a time when a Bond car was just a car, but these days it’s a franchise in its own right, complete with more branding opportunities than you can shake a stick at. Or a Walther PPK. Hence the new Defender V8 Bond Edition. Just in nice time for the much-delayed o ime o Die, ’s 25th outing on the big screen (and you can name them all, can’t you , and Rover has unveiled a limited edition

version of the 90 and 110 created by SV Bespoke and available to order with prices starting at £105,395. As with the existing Defender V8, which was launched earlier this year, the Bond Edition packs a 525bhp, 462lbf.ft punch from its supercharged 5.0-litre petrol engine. The result is a 4.9-second 0-60 time in the 90, and both have appropriately tuned suspension and transmission to give them dynamics to match their outright pace. On top of this, Bond Edition models gain and over’s tended Black

As this suggests, they’re only making 300 of these vehicles. Not ust for Britain, either that’s the sum
Disappointing results for Land Rover in annual Reliability Survey by What Car? magazine LAND ROVER DID BADLY in What Car? magazine’s latest Reliability Survey. Covering vehicles aged up to five years, this polled responses from more than 16,000 owners of 178 different models from 30 brands. As a manufacturer, Land Rover scored a Reliability Rating of 82.5%. Only Fiat (80%) did worse. The Discovery, meanwhile, came bottom of the Luxury SUV class, on 72.1%, and the Mk1 Evoque was the least reliable Family SUV on 77.1%. verrati is a company which says its mission is to redefine and future-proof iconic cars by upgrading them with the latest electric vehicle technology.’ t has already created electric versions of the Porsche 911, Superformance GT40 and ercedes-Ben S Pagoda and its latest creation is an 88” Series IIA. Unveiled at the start of September, verrati’s Series A has been fully restored and, on top of that, fitted with a state-of-the-art ero emission powertrain’ combining a kWh battery with a 150bhp, 221lbf.ft motor. We know what you’re thinking. But no, this is not a and over with its teeth pulled out. It retains the options of high and low range, as well as two and four-wheel drive, meaning it’s as much of an off-roader as ever. With power steering and braking, in fact, as well as every last pound of that torque output available from zero rpm, it has the potential to be significantly better. On that subject, the restoration involves donor vehicles being stripped right back to a bare chassis, which is then galvanised as is the bulkhead. aintaining the structural integrity of the electrified Series A forms the foundation of verrati’s restoration process,’ says the company, though if you know your classic and over’s you’ll appreciate that certainly in the long term,
E
by no means has this one’s structural integrity simply been maintained.’ Customers can spec their IIA with a choice of soft-tops or a Safari roof, and Everrati also offers a variety of wheel colours. Inside, the seats are retrimmed in sustainable Bridge of Weir leather and all of them, even the rears, can be heated. In general, Everrati says the cabin has been redefined and subtly upgraded to modern standards with a host of new additions to enhance driver comfort and convenience.’ With the unveiling of an electric version of the legendary and over Series IIA, we are continuing to deliver on verrati’s mission, which is to craft cutting-edge, capable, highly desirable
and sustainable cars, each with the soul of an icon,’ says company founder ustin unny. ’ o do so re uires unparalleled attention to detail and technical proficiency, with one eye on ensuring our iconic cars meet 21st Century demands and the other on safeguarding a vehicle’s original character and D A both dynamically and aesthetically.’ With regenerative braking helping it deliver a real-world range of 125 miles, verrati’s Series A is certainly capable of beig used as an everyday and Rover. If you fancy the idea of doing ust that, or you’re ust wondering what ong of these bad boys is going to cost you clue petrol is cheaper , it’s time to pay a visit to www.everrati.com

Gibson’s Gab Breaking Cover
There are better ways to spend £108,040 than on a James Bond-themed Defender, says Tim Gibson Words: Tim Gibson Do you really need a Defender with puddle lights that pro ect a special ’ oval on to the ground, and which has a similar decal on its tailgate Would you pay any money for such a vehicle, which is basically a blown-up version of a kids’ toy, let alone , These are the questions circling my mind today. ’ve ust read the press release saying that two versions of this and over Bespoke S -designed vehicle are available to order. To be fair, the 90 variant is only £105,395, so at least there’s an option for those who can’t afford the . In the spirit of full disclosure, both versions have one significant redeem-
ing feature in the form of the 525PS V8 engine beneath the bonnet. But remember that you can already buy a Defender with this power plant that doesn’t come with tacky ames Bondthemed trinkets, and it’s ust a shade over £100,000. So if you have that sort of money to spend on a car, you may want to bank the difference. You can use it to buy your first couple of tanks of petrol. ncidentally, it’s not that don’t like James Bond. I love the movies, and my appreciation is deeper still for Ian leming’s novels. ust yesterday WhatsApped my family to ask who would accompany me on a trip to the cinema once No Time To Die is released. promised we’d leave it a few
days to let the Covid germs dissipate. Even so, I think I count as a fan. But here’s the thing about fandom. Just because you like something doesn’t mean you have to buy products that advertise it to the world. I think the same part of me that finds band -shirts a bit icky recoils at the Bond Defender. It all just feels a bit like when my son asked for Paw Patrol bed covers. r maybe it’s like when grown men wear football or rugby shirts. ’ve always found this a strange sartorial decision, perhaps because I presume they want me to think they actually play for the team whose colours they’re wearing. As if ’ll do a double take in esco because think ’ve ust spotted Harry ane or Owen Farrell in the booze aisle.
By this argument, the problem with the Bond Defender is that the people who buy one will want the world to think that they are actually James Bond. And my worry here is a simple one: what happens when they try to chase a double-decker bus through a Jamaican ungle while irting with a beautiful-yethandy-in-a-fight woman they’ve ust met at a health club and shooting bad guys with a fountain pen that also contains bullets And even if they manage to pull off this unlikely m lange of actions, it’ll almost certainly go horribly wrong when
they insouciantly take their other hand off the wheel to straighten their tie. hey’re not ames Bond, after all. So there it is don’t like the idea of the Bond Defender because, if it were me driving one, ’d feel self-conscious about the image was pro ecting figuratively and, thanks to those puddle lights, literally. But you don’t want to trust my udgment on the matter. Just ask my son, who’s spent his formative years rushing upstairs when friends visit to hide his Emma Bridgwater duvet cover. He thinks the Bond Defender is pretty cool.

In praise of an exemplary motor trader
omething that’s always been a mantra throughout my career, first on Off Road and 4 Wheel Drive, then as editor of Land Rover World, then when we launched Total Off Road and now here on The Landy, is that we don’t do company profiles. You know those articles you see that are basically a few pages of slavish praise, often enough for someone you know perfectly well is highly offensive, a chancer or a full-on crook… you look at them and you ust know that they’re not proper ournalism at all, they’ve been paid for and they put the subject and the author alike to shame. ow, as ournalists go ’m no ohn Pilger. But ’ve always considered myself to be above that. If a story is worth telling, it’s worth telling, and if it’s not, it’s not. Advertising money has no bearing on it our readers come first. ’m telling you this because in this month’s issue of The Landy, we’re running and article which at first glance might look like a company profile. ead it, however, and hope you’ll find that it’s actually a fascinating insight into the early days of the off-road scene in Britain, and a time when and overs were just starting to go from being simple working tools to something people had started to get excited about. The company at the centre of the story is umtree , a and over specialist in Sussex run by John Bowden. He’s the kind of guy you never hear anyone say a bad thing about; in coming on for three decades writing about s, ’ve met a whole lot of motor traders and had dealings of my own with many. John is one of the few who, in all that time, has never tried to stitch me up. hat’s why, when he asked if would like to do something about the history of the company he has recently put up for sale, having reached retirement age, was happy to say yes. t’s a tale full of classic trucks, long-lost venues and great names from the heyday of Britain’s off-road scene. still don’t do company profiles. But this is much more than that. As I said, if a story is worth telling, it’s worth telling. And this one is sure worth reading. Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk

8 DEADMAN’S HILL IS A FA LO S RI HT OF WAY in North Yorkshire, which reopened last year after a lengthy period awaiting repairs. It’s a spectacularly scenic drive which holds up well under motor vehicle use so long as you stick to the correct line, though as is so often the case it only takes one drainage issue to start a chain reaction that can quickly run out of control. As if to prove that some jobs are never done, a team led by Green Lane Association North Yorkshire Rep Barrie Mounty has been out carrying out further maintenance on the lane – specifically a short section which had become boggy thanks to blocked grips forcing water runoff to flow directly on the track. These have now been cleaned out, allowing them to do their job once more. The team also refitted some signs on gates along the route, replacing others which had mysteriously disappeared. ‘Hopefully the bog hole should dry out and become firm again, comments Barrie. ‘A really big thank-you to everyone who turned out to do the work – a job well done by all.’
PINDALE ROAD, near Castleton in Derbyshire, has been the scene of some damaging off-piste driving in the past. This has been brought under control more recently by the use of boulders to keep traffic on the right of way, but that wasn’t enough to stop a slightly bizarre new road sign from appearing at the southern end of the trail. Looking for all the world like a closure sign, this is in fact a warning to drivers of the consequences of anti-social activity. As well as being ugly, though, it’s confusing to read and could certainly result in less experienced motor vehicle users being scared away. ‘If you are a careful driver, comply with the GLASS code and keep to the track then you have nothing to worry about,’ says the Green Lane Association’s Derbyshire Rep Chris Mitchell. Good advice wherever your travels take you.
Land Rover drivers step in to help local residents and calm public bodies’ rights of way concerns
t’s easy to assume that organisations representing green lane users only get involved in fighting to prevent rights of way from being closed, and that local authorities see them as a menace. But in fact, nothing could be further from the truth as two recent incidents demonstrate. he first of these saw the reen ane Association being contacted by Denbighshire County Council, on behalf of a landowner whose boundary gate and fence were in need of repair work. The issue here was that these were on a Byway pen to All raffic which runs between two farms, near langwyfan in the north of the county. ver the years,’ reports ASS’ resident superheroine auren aton, who’s currently covering the position of Denbighshire Rep in addition to all her other roles with the association, the gate’s lower hinge had come loose and fallen out, making it difficult to open and close. The same thing had happened on a gate further up the lane. We’d already done some clearance work on the lane after a storm the previous year, when windfall blocked the route and several large branches were left precariously hanging above the byway. So we were happy to return to help with the boundary repairs.’ Using materials provided by Denbighshire Council, the landowner and ASS itself, a working party including volunteers from the association got down to business to re-hang the gate, using a new gatepost and latch,
I
and instal fencing from the post to the boundary. With this done, they moved on to the next gate where they repaired the lower hinge. he lane is really popular with walkers and cyclists, as well as laners and trail riders,’ e plains auren. t is no surprise, as the views from the top of the Clwydian Range are stunning! Signage was installed to show that the route is a byway open to all traffic and that repairs had been made for the benefit of all users.’ In the second incident, once again ASS was the go-to point of contact this time for the owners of a property
at one end of a byway near the village of Cynghordy in Carmarthenshire. Sadly, they had been encountering problems with motor vehicles (mainly on two wheels travelling too fast through their home. hey fully understand and accept that it is a public right of way, explains Carmarthenshire Rep Andrew Hadley. But they say the minority are spoiling it for the majority. Whilst most people are very considerate, some are not.’ he property’s owners contacted ASS to seek help. n response, the organisation installed a set of signs in both directions on the lane asking us-
ers to slow down to 5mph and be wary of children and animals. We will continue to monitor the situation,’ says Andrew. he property owner was very pleased with the signs and my help to erect them, and hopes this will help. would ask that ASS members using the lane let me know of any issues and please take it steady through the property.’ Two jobs very well done, then. And yet more proof that society at large can always turn to the responsible green laning community for help with maintaining rights of way for the benefit of all.

Goodwood Motor Company now offering half-sized first Land Rover in its ‘before’ state… YES, WE KNOW what you’re thinking. This here is a Land Rover publication, and that there is no Land Rover. But bear with us…
It’s the work of Goodwood Motor Company. This makes a range of halfscale mini 4x4s in the style of the WWII Willys Jeep and the Toyota FJ40.
Wot no Series I? Yes, outrageous, isn’t it? But don’t let that put you off. After all, Spencer and Maurice Wilks started off with a US Army Willys and turned it into the first ever Land Rover, and if it’s good enough for those guys… Goodwood’s half-scale 4x4s are powered by either a 150cc, 4-stroke petrol engine with a 3-speed semi-auto gearbox, or a 60v / 1200w electric motor with high and low speeds. The latter uses lithium batteries, and in both cases the vehicles also have a reverse gear. Based on a platform with fully independent suspension and hydraulic disc brakes, the vehicles also come with high-level roll bars, seat belts, steel or alloy wheels, full lighting sets, indicators, speedos, horns, spare wheels, fuel cans, wheelarch extensions, off-road tyres, side shovels and more. There’s even a 12v, 2000lb electric winch up front.

NORMALLY WHEN WE write about D lighting products, it’s big, serious stuff designed to illuminate the terrain ahead to a distance of several miles. Stuff like the Osram -CB S ightbar, for instance, which we featured in these pages last month. But Osram has a whimsical trick or two up its sleeve too. ou wouldn’t know it from the name, but the LEDwill turn your cabin into the brightest thing on four wheels. he Driving nterior Strip it, to give it its slightly less prosaic name, contains two e ible D strips, each . metres long and with Ds. Osram suggests motorhomes and delivery trucks as suitable applications for the lights, but you’re already thinking about your overland motor. Don’t think about them as a way of entertaining passers-by, though, because they’re not C -approved and mustn’t be used on public roads. replicas of the All of which cannot help but beg the question, are these children’s toys or small-scale wagons for, well, big kids? The answer, says Goodwood, is that they were primarily designed for kids (and are a great way to learn how to drive with standard controls from an early age) but will also accommodate two adults. They’re CE certificated, too, which ought to come as something of a reassurance – as should a standard 12-month warranty. More reassuringly yet, the engine is mounted in the rear – keeping the drive chain as short as possible and therefore dialling out the biggest source of woe in traditional mini-car design. ‘We don’t use our customers as our “guinea pig R&D department, says Goodwood. ‘We prefer to design, build and test our products for quality, reliability and longevity before releasing them for sale.’ Which is how it should be. A Fitting Farewell
Words and Pictures: Dan Fenn
The tragic passing of a lifelong friend prompted Land Rover specialist Tim Fry to embark on a unique kind of project. Over the course of just ten days, he and his staff set out to convert a tired old Defender 130 into the hearse his friend had asked for to bear him on his final journey ne Monday, earlier this year, Tim Fry received an unexpected text message from one of his closest
O
friends ’ think it might be time to get my and over ready.’ t came out of the blue, and it was extremely concerning. Tim,
whose eponymous Cheltenhambased business is one of the best known and over specialists in the country, recognised it as a reference
to a conversation they had had about Prince Philip’s hearse. And, as it turned out, the message had been sent from the back of an ambulance.
ragically, im’s friend was correct. hree days later, despite the best efforts of the doctors and nurses tending to him, he passed away.

ut of respect to im’s wishes, we won’t identify his friend by name. Suffice to say he too was a pillar of the local business community, and a very successful one, whose philanthropy and charitable work were very well known in his part of the country. He was a man who deserved the greatest of respect, and who was eminently worthy of a fitting send-off. This is the very sad background to the story of an extraordinary Land Rover – one which, to make it all the more remarkable, was built in ust ten days. The vehicle itself, a 200Tdi 130 with a dropside pick-up body, had been in the possession of Tim Fry Land Rovers for many years. The company had originally sold it to ewkesbury School, where it served as the groundsman’s vehicle, before buying it back when its tour of duty there was complete. At this point, it was still painted in its original blue. And its future could have been very different, had a customer not dropped out around six years ago. He had commissioned the company to convert it into a tipper, but with the ob still in its early stages his needs changed and for half a decade and more, the 130 was one of the very many old andies parked in im’s
extensive yard waiting to discover their next purpose in life. ollowing his friend’s tragic passing, im says, it was a couple of weeks before the sense of shock dissipated to the point where he could get down to building a and over for his funeral. After that, it was all systems go. bviously, for a pro ect like this it helps if you have trade accounts with the suppliers that matter and a team of skilled technicians already working for you. As always, though, with and Rover specialists, this was much more than ust mere work. t was a ob to be proud of and, of course, almost the definitive labour of love. The 130 was stripped and recommissioned mechanically, then rebuilt in its new form using all new panels. The rear frame and canopy were fabricated from scratch, using sheet steel folded over a frame built from one-inch bo . Beneath it, a full set of specialised hardware was installed from an old Ford Cardinal hearse, with coffin grips and rollers laid into a polished timber deck. Finally, the interior was completely retrimmed and the vehicle was finished off with a new set of BFG All- errains on steel modular rims. ts panels were resprayed in the elegant shade of green you see here and with that, the old had been transformed into a imposing but respectful hearse. t wasn’t meant to be a carbon copy of Prince Philip’s . But as a classic Landy inspired by that vehicle, it served its purpose with distinction. ts e istence is a tribute to the team at im Fry Land Rovers – and for his friend, it provided exactly the transport he had spoken about for his final ourney.
‘As is always the case with Land Rover specialists, this was much more than just mere work. It was a job to be proud of and, of course, it was almost the definitive labour of love’
Tim Fry Land Rovers has now made the 130 available to hire for use as a funeral vehicle. You can contact the company on 01242 244344, or by visiting www.timfrylandrovers.co.uk

Heightened Capacity There’s always been something about a 110 HCPU that appeals to the eye. But this one’s capacity to please is higher than ever, thanks to some choice work by Wallis Defenders prucing up Defenders has become a major part of the Land Rover industry in recent years. There are the companies we all know about whose builds command price tags of a quarter of a million pounds or more – but for every one of these there’s another dozen creating nicely enhanced, standout-from-the-crowd 90s and 110s for a clientele whose wealth is measurable in… well, it’s ust measurable. Wallis Defenders is one of the most recent additions to this part of the andy scene. et it’s also one of the best-established businesses you’ll find anywhere in the motor trade.

with looking after a thriving sales and maintenance operation, in the last few years he has started getting interested in the idea of branching out into Land overs. And that’s where Wallis Defenders was born. The company has already built a good number of vehicles – some for customers, some for show and some for stock. A difference between it and many of the usual bling- em-up suspects is evident right there this isn’t one of those set-ups that needs to sell one before it has enough money to buy the parts for the next. It might be new to the scene, but it’s got capital behind it and its business planning is rock-solid. onetheless, it’s not one of those companies that are content merely to play the percentages. When you talk to lliot, you can tell that he loves his and overs. Particularly if you’re standing in the showroom they live in at the time. And what this means is that whereas some will happily churn out one identikit modded Defender after another, he’s not afraid of daring to be different. t’s a business, of course, and he’s building them for a market. But it takes a brave man to base this kind of build on a Hi-Cap… The vehicle in question is a 2.2 TDCi from 2013. It came out of the factory in S trim, meaning it was already fitted
with air-conditioning among a few other lu uries, but even then it’s made a quantum leap forward now. Of course, a white pick-up is hardly the stuff of radical road presence. When it’s a proper gleaming shade of white, though, rather than turgid old Bog oll rey, it’s a whole lot different. And when this is contrasting with stuff like a set of 18” Sawtooth alloys and gloss black grille, arches, vents and mirrors, it’s set fair to be about the most eye-catching thing on the road. here’s more black on the cab roof, the chequer plate sills and wing tops and finally the side steps, which you may recognise as the Fire and Ice variety. And even where things would have been black originally, they’ve been enhanced – the front bumper has been replaced by a DRL job and the headlamp surrounds are the same gloss material as the grille. The headlamps themselves, meanwhile, are halo units. oving back to those wheels, they’re home to a set of 255/55R18 Cooper Discoverer AT3s. Already more than a little cool, then but they’ve been spaced out by 30mm at the front and 50mm at the back to give the truck some added stance. Not everyone will get that, but there’s a four-s uare attitude to its appearance that definitely catches the eye. Now, Land Rover people can be a cynical lot, and you might be looking at this and saying to yourself that it’s all fur coat and no knickers. What you’d be saying, however, would be wrong. There are certainly companies out there that think nothing of hiding a ropy motor beneath a blanket of fancy addons. But Wallis Defenders is not one of them. very one of its builds starts with a comprehensive clean underneath, following which the chassis is given
a similarly comprehensive course of protective treatment – and the results are there to be seen. You could eat your dinner off the underside of one of these trucks, if only gravity wasn’t trying to stop you. lliot himself talks of customers turning up to view vehicles, taking a quick look at the chassis and door bottoms and saying yes please, ’ll take it. here’s more hidden stuff inside the cabin, too, with 6mm foam insulation and 3mm sound deadening material helping to quieten it down. You rest your feet in Lucari carpeting, and the same company’s high-rise cubby bo is sat between the seats. The dash is trimmed in leather and the roof lining in alcantara, while the steering wheel is a 13” Momo job and the seats are XS Sports units. What this all goes to show is that you don’t need to mess with the engine, drivetrain, suspension and so on to turn a standard Defender into one that’s very special (and valuable). Wallis Defenders can certainly do all of that for you, if it’s what you want, but this is basically still a standard Hi-Cap only one you’d never mistake for anything else. iven that this is a company which builds Land Rovers to sell, we hope it won’t come as too much of a bucket of cold water that the actual vehicle in these pictures has long since been sold. But if so, well, it’s a company which builds Land Rovers to sell, so you pretty much know what to do. Which just goes to show that business sense runs deep. Building cool Land Rovers to sell is a great way of earning a living, if you can make it happen. And when you build them the way lliott and his team have chosen to build them, every truck you turn out is an advert for what you do.

Loud and Proud Not many P38 Range Rovers get turned into off-road toys. This one proves that with a few choice mods, it can be done – and you can end up with a bit of a street machine at the same time emember when the P38 was new and people said they were so complicated that no-one would ever modify one for off-roading? If the answer is no, well done for being so young. But for the rest of us, the move away from the simple old engineering of the Range Rover Classic seemed to have signalled an end to any possibility of future fun and games. Then came the L322, and then after it the , and now it’s the P that looks like a simple old truck. A simple old truck with fearsomely complicated and infamously temperamental electronics all over it, of course, but the basic engineering is still as traditional as they come.
R
Words: Gary Martin Pictures: Alan Kidd It has axles. It has a chassis. It has a transfer case. Those electronics might be there to mess up your life, but the good mechanical stuff is all there too. Despite this, you don’t see many people modifying P38s. Even the similarlyish old Discovery 2, itself

hardly common in the off-road world, gets more love than the second-gen Range Rover. The TD5 engine may of course have something to do with that, because the BMW unit in the Rangey screams and runs away at the first sign of a rice pudding with a skin on it.
Now that these are old trucks and you’re more likely to use them as occasional playthings than everyday mile munchers, however, perhaps it’s the V8 options that are more relevant. The Disco 2 had the 4.0-litre V8, as did the Range Rover, and it was

Stainless Steel Carpet Trim As Original 4.6 put out 221bhp and 280lbf.ft and consumed an average of about 17mpg. t was plenty smooth and refined, though, just like the rest of the vehicle. It was quiet, too. Which is where Steve Smale’s P comes in. his is less modified than it might look at first glance. But uiet, it’s not. Incredibly, the exhaust is still quite standard. It follows the same two-intoone-into-two pattern as the original. But let’s ust say there are less baf es than there once was. t’s still entirely legal a clean bill of health from several MOT tests down the years attests to that but it’s also entirely lovely. here’s a wonderful deep-throated rumble when he fires it up, rising to a purposeful bellow as the revs climb under load. And that’s ust from following him around on the road. When he’s booting it up a near-vertical hill at Devil’s Pit, which just happens to be a few miles away from him… well, you can just imagine how all hell breaks loose. As we said, though, this is not a heavily modified vehicle. t’s still on air suspension, believe it or not. t’s riding on 265/75R16 Malatese Kobras a sensible mud-terrain remould, and hardly overly huge, albeit plenty taller than the vehicle was built to take. He says it rubs a little on its lowest height setting, the answer being… to not use it on its lowest height setting. Duh. And on full height, it works a treat. He admits to having popped a suspension air bag once when a full-on assault on a very uneven hill resulted in a wheel coming back down to earth with a crash. And the old-school traction control means a set of brake pads is doing well to last half a dozen playdays. On that subject, the heavy clay mud of Devil’s Pit means the vehicle is currently enjoying life with a brand new radiator. But ultimately, Steve says, it does its thing very well and more reliably than you might think. oing back to the mods, there are heavy-duty bumpers at both ends and a similarly hefty steering guard underneath. And, er, that’s it. Well, the air-con has been removed, because it had stopped working and he wasn’t going to let anything live under the bonnet that wasn’t working for its living.
But as we said, this is a surprisingly standard vehicle. Thos bumpers, though. When we say heavy-duty’, we’re not oking. Steve tells us that it took three blokes to lift the back on into place. And it’s not the one with the winch tray… He doesn’t know where they came from (he bought the vehicle more or less as it is) but it looks like a fabricator’s special rather than something from a production line as the tray doesn’t have any mounting holes or even a slot for a fairlead. t’s a case of doing your own marking and cutting to suit the winch in question, which wouldn’t be a five minute ob. As it is, Steve’s never bothered with a winch for the simple reason that you don’t need one for playdays. And anyway, he’s normally the one pulling other people out. Normally, though not always. He mentions that someone in a Trooper tried to rescue him on one occasion and ended up killing his own vehicle in the process. The P38 was never less than a heavy old lump, and bolting several hundred pounds of steel to each end is only ever going to take that one way.
Not that getting stuck has ever been anything of a common occurrence for this vehicle. Nor has breaking down, despite the P ’s almost uni uely fearsome reputation it throws the occasional code on the dash, and of course a steady diet of off-roading is always going to mean an enhanced maintenance schedule (especially when it’s done in a village called Barton-le-Clay… , but mainly if there’s a pain point in the story it involves the sensational amount of fuel it takes to keep the big happy. Steve talks in hushed tones of a trip he made once to Tixover for an off-road day, and how much it cost him… onetheless, what you’re looking at is a ange over that’s for sale. Or it might be. We dropped in to take these photos after Steve contacted us to place an advert in our classifieds, and while we were there we suggested gently that since he does clearly love it so much, he’d be better off keeping it. So, go looking in those classifieds if a still-classy . HS with off-road smarts and a voice to die for sounds like your ne t ood dea. f you get a knockback, we’re the ones to blame.

O Gum All Ye Faithful Gumtree 4x4 is one of the best known and most highly respected independent Land Rover specialists anywhere in the world. The company is as famous in the restoration world as it is in the comp safari game, and generations of farmers and enthusiasts in the south-east of the country have become faithful customers, relying on it to keep their Land Rovers going. And it all started back on the day, 40 years ago, when a redundancy notice left proprietor John Bowden up a gumtree of his own…

Put it another way. We’ve spoken to many Land Rover owners down the years who’ve mentioned the name of their spanner man and said wouldn’t let anybody else touch it.’ And in every single case, bar none, that spanner man has been an independent. And in a disproportionate number of cases, that independent has been umtree . or a huge number of Land Rover owners in the south-east of the country, the company has become like one of the family. hat’s because, to a great e tent, Gumtree very much is one of the family. Every independent is there to make a living, but some of them come across as being solely business-focused. Nothing wrong with that, but at Gumtree they’re proper and over people. As usual when this happens, it starts from the top. The company was founded by ohn Bowden, a farmer’s son who learnt to drive round the fields in a Series and pretty much never looked back. n , while still at school, he oined the edgling All Wheel Drive Club as member number . When he was , he bought a Willys Jeep for £200, then as a student he spent two weeks scaring himself behind the wheel of an Austin Champ. Any tale of the AWDC from back then is sure to mention names who
have become the stuff of legend, and they don’t come any more legendary than Brian Bashall, the father of the Dunsfold dynasty. John went trialling with the great man and in 1971 paid him for an Series A. thrashed it unmercifully,’ he recalls, changing the engine to a . -litre

And here’s where the story morphs seamlessly from being that of John Bowden, off-roader, into that of John Bowden, doyen of one of the bestloved and longest-running Land Rover specialists anywhere in the world. By now, John was working as a truck salesman. But, with the sort of timing

Local farmers and foresters came to know the company as one they could trust – and even now, four decades later, they still do. But a new chapter in the company’s history was about to open, when a set of workshops and associated MOT testing centre became available in Ditchling Common. John saw this as a perfect opportunity not ust to e pand but to bring the company’s identity up to date – and so Gumtree Enterprises became umtree . he side of the business dealing in second-hand parts remained in Plumpton for another ten years, but then in 2011 the whole operation was consolidated on the one site at Ditchling. By now, the company was well set up to turn over a constant stream of servicing and repair work for the farm and estate workers, enthusiasts and general and over owners of Susse and beyond. But there was always more to Gumtree than that – and throughout even this more modern part of the tale, it’s been about more than just the bread and butter work. We built the first coiler on a new prototype chassis from Steve Walker later ichards Chassis in about ,’ ohn recalls. We also had the first bikini tops for Series Landies made for our customers by All Wheel rim after a trip to the SA, and we were agents for Motor and Diesel doing high-powered diesel conversions before the di retrofit became popular.’ t all adds up to an outfit whose heritage has a breadth and depth that makes it worthy of the greatest respect. And sure enough, you only ever hear good things about both umtree
and ohn himself. f it was made from bricks and mortar, this is one of those companies which (just like Land Rover, indeed) would be a listed building. And as he looks ahead, this is something John Bowden recognises. With me being past retirement age, the business is now more and more run by its established team of trusted staff. But the time has come to look to the future.’ What this means is that Gumtree td is on the market. But ohn is selling it as he grew it – with great care and attention, as a strong, ongoing business with a top-quality team of employees and an enormous reserve of goodwill, not to say affection, among its customers. He’s ready to step in to the background but, in his words, the e isting team can and indeed may

simply carry on managing and running the business.’ Such a fine going concern is like a diamond you don’t just get rid, you select who is worthy before offering it to them. n ohn’s view, umtree could be split between the rebuilding and service sides of the business, or sold as one. Basically,’ he says, am here to discuss the future with anyone interested. But am determined that the name and business should live on.’ And so it should. For many people, looking after Land Rovers is a way of earning a living in some cases, it’s a
way of amassing a fortune. Either way, it takes a special kind of person not to focus solely on the profits but always to retain the fascination, love, respect or sheer sense of e citement that drew them to the vehicles in the first place. That the love for Land Rovers is still there for John is very clear when he starts reminiscing about the old days with the AWDC or reeling off the various rare and special vehicles he’s owned down the years. A Series Station Wagon the team built from parts, a dropside Series B with a and a taste for gearbo es, a
Sandringham ,aC D that had been driven home from Australia… so many Landies, so many stories… And the story is far from over. Perhaps, indeed, someone reading this will have a part to play in the ne t chapter. The opportunity is there, and it’s a rare one. Businesses come and businesses go, but it takes something special to pass into the realms of local lore. hat’s what you have here a company whose customers regard it with a devotion John could scarcely have dreamt of 40 years ago when he was, literally, up a Gumtree.

Snakes Alive! Words: Olly Sack Pictures: Arkonik
Arkonik’s Viper 90 has a name that’s reminiscent of a particularly outrageous American us le ar roni ally i s en ine o es ro ano her o ha ree i h a a nifi en 6.2-litre Chevy LS3 giving it the beating heart of a Corvette f you say the name Viper to your average car nut, they’ll think about one thing and one thing only. he Dodge iper was a completely barmy sports car which was launched in the early s, powered by a hulking great engine. t was even more monstrous than it looked, and it looked really monstrous. ike all muscle cars, the iper was all about an engine. ts was created by taking an old eneral otors commercial vehicle lump and engaging amborghini to turn it into something fun. Back it came displacing . litres, yanging out bhp and making a noise like a pack of wolves riding on a Chieftain tank.
I
here’s another iper, though. his one was built two years before Dodge got around to launching theirs, though rather inconveniently it didn’t actually get given its name until more than three decades later. hat’s because it’s a and over which has ust been remanufactured, and renamed, by Arkonik. So we’ve got a thing built to race at e ans and a thing built to chug round Wales hauling a trailer full of sheep. And guess what he one with the farmer’s bootprints all over its pedals is the one that’s more powerful. t wasn’t always like that, of course. But Arkonik doesn’t ust remanufacture and overs it reimagines them. And
one of the ways in which it does this involves fetching out the original engine and replacing it with a . -litre Chevy . he engine from the Corvette, in other words. resh out of the crate and bolted to a similarly new si -speed auto bo , this puts out bhp before you start thinking about tuning it. So that’s more than the original iper already. Dodge did push it further in later years, though, upping the engine size to . litres finally, a sensible si e and getting bhp out of it, along with a top speed of more than mph, but that’s ust plain vulgar. So let’s forget about that iper and look instead at the real thing, which is

in no way vulgar. t’s a bit of a rarity in Arkonik terms, being a the bulk of the company’s vehicles are s, but as far as we’re concerned that stonking great Chevy sounds even better coming from the coolest thing and over ever made. And this definitely is cool. t’s actually not as heavily modified as you might thing, which is a strange thing to say about a Defender with an S turning its wheels via a si -speed auto bo , but as is normally the case with Arkonik’s vehicles the main thing that stands out is the utterly overwhelming uality with which it’s been rebuilt. he company takes all its and overs back to a bare chassis, which is stripped back, repaired, treated and wa ed to the point where it’s ready not so much to go again as to go again forever. And when they go back together, they do so with uality touches like uni ue doors, designed not to curtain on the outside or drum on the inside, and an Arkonik-specific wiring loom which the company’s electrical specialists created from scratch to a standard that leaves the original almost literally in the dark. hat’s the stuff you don’t see, but it’s at the heart of what makes these vehicles so different from the and overs the rest of us are used to. Anyone with a few uid to spare can bolt a set of Sawtooth alloys on to an old brush-painted nail, for e ample, and what they’ll get is an old brushpainted nail with Sawtooth alloys on it, but what you’re looking at here is
something whose style matches its substance. hose alloys are shod with a smart set of B oodrich All- errains, and they’re matched perfectly to the metallic A acing reen adorning the ’s almost frighteningly straight panels. here’s a B Signature grille up front and a Puma bonnet shrouding the big Chevy lump, as well as ire and ce bony side steps and ptimill air intakes on the wing tops. ruck- ite D headlamps make the most of what that modernised wiring loom has got to give, and protection comes from a AS Step at the back and a front steering guard finished in aptor Black. f this all goes together to create a that’s clearly something special but still standard enough not to look like a freak, it’s when you climb into the cabin that you can really see what you get for your money. Arkonik knows how to create the best interiors around… which is, mainly, to get uskin Design on the case. p front, the eicesterbased trim specialist has upholstered a pair of heated lite Sports seats using ut Brown nappa leather with diamond uilting and a contrasting ivory stitch, and the same material also appears on the door cards, gearstick gaiters and cubby bo . here are four inward-facing seats in the back, too, all trimmed to match. Add in a spoked steering wheel, again with a brown leather rim, and you have an interior to be e ceptionally proud of. t’s augmented with black carpets, black anodised door furniture and a black suede headlining, and up on the dash there’s a Pioneer touch-
screen media unit with reversing camera and smartphone pairing. f you look carefully at our photos, you might also notice something incongruous about the ’s interior. Which is that it contains a gearstick. ither that or it’s the world’s longest transfer level. Which it isn’t. here’s a reason for this. Arkonik sells its vehicles primarily to the SA, where the market for and overs is tremendously well heeled compared to the way it is back home. n America, the guys in the workshop do eeps, the guys in the office do and overs and the guys in the boardroom do Arkonik. nly problem is, America won’t let a vehicle in unless it’s chassis, engine and gearbo are all original. t won’t have escaped your notice that the . -litre S engine was never fitted as original e uipment in the . Which means Arkonik can’t fit them in the vehicles it builds before shipping them to the States. So instead it ships them to the States, gets them through the registration process and is then free to modify them as much as its customer wants. t even has its own factory, Arkonik S , in South Carolina, which is where the Chevy engine and gearbo are installed. And that’s when the iper really becomes a viper. As with every Arkonik build, everything from the technical spec to the colour and trim is decided by the customer. he company tends not to do hardcore off-road builds, nor does it do back-to-original restorations. t does reimagined and overs whose uality is matched by their uni ueness and if your average car nut was to see this thing, he’s never think about the Dodge iper again.

Cannibal Classics
R
eceived wisdom in the world of leaf-sprung Land Rovers is that they should be kept as original as possible. But for decades, people thought nothing of cannibalising one leafer to keep another alive – and the result has been a weird
and wonderful collection of non-standard trucks from the olden days. The Series I we featured in last month’s issue, an old trialler restored into a latter-day fun wagon, is a case in point. But you don’t have to go as extreme as that. An awful lot of leafers
Series I (1948-1958)
The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of
all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands
Series III (1971-1985)
he Series wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical
terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.
Lightweight (1968-1984)
These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular
Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands
90/110 (1983-1990)
This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can
also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.
have been fitted with more modern engines, in some cases several times, and it’s still not unheard of for people to do this today while restoring them to be used rather than looked at. hese days, and over’s own di engine is the most popular choice for this kind of conversion. It brings a truck up to date without ruining its character – and you can always convert it back again afterwards if you want to make
£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. he sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s
£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models
£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. hey’re a rare breed, though so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A ’ ’ E over regular models means they command a price premium
£2500-£19,000 A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: E E potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition
Insure a 109” Tdi with Adrian Flux from £100
it into a traditional classic instead. The quality of the conversion is crucial – as of course is that of the vehicle itself!
• Based on a 1979 Series III 109” Safari with no other modifications. Valued at £17,500, limited to 5000 miles a year. 50 year old driver, fully comp, excess of £150
Series II/IIA (1958-1971)
£2500-£40,000
much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of
refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing
Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries
Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. hey’re a real
rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by
101 (1972-1978)
Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when
£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were ogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its engine. t’s still a military tool, though some still have fi tures
127 (1985-1990)
The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which
having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t e pect performance but do e pect to be given an interesting’ time in the workshop… Pros: A Land Rover like no , ’ Cons: E ,
and fittings from their Army life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards. Pros: Master of the road. Lovely 8 E sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running E ,
£7500-£25,000 took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. hese days, it’s very rare to find a that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the is more of an enthusiast’s
motor. t’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. ots to be wary of, then but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: E limitless potential and character Cons: S had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£29,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)
The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for
decades if it’s looked after. ind one that’s had all its oil changes a tall order and it’ll go round and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier di is that it’s simpler than the later . What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.
Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)
The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though
the two are related. t’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a D fi . The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve
Defender TDCi (2007-2016)
The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and
smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been
The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later , and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. ust be sure it’s an original di you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. that changed the most. hat’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.
become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road… Pros: Strength and simplicity. P D Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory
If the subject of the new Defender comes up in enthusiast circles, try

As a result, you’ll find many more original(ish) 130s than 127s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further. Pros: A proper truck with huge capabilities in every area Cons: I ’ ’ actually need that much size

a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis. Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can
still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles
£45,000-£105,000
to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. t’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. his goes for maintenance and, crucially,
making modifications a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. t won’t hold its value the way an original-shaper does, either. Be in no doubt, though – this is a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks ’

The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. t’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.
Range Rover L322 (2002-12)
The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-
liable than the P . t’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…
RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)
The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery meaning it’s
a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. t doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.
RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)
When the vo ue was launched, it signalled ’s intent on hitting
the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional and Rover owner. t’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and
An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models
£2250-£28,000
A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to
own, even today. The problem is that they’re very comple and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. lectronics are laughably aky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t
Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £27,000-£220,000
his isn’t a D motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs
The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the
£32500-£25,000
RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)
ou’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. E
£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. here’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with WD. Pros: E , , concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport
The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than
range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. t’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.
the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the amboyant posture, while others will love it. ither way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.
RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on)
Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new
The Velar a competent cruiser and has received numerous accolades
other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance Well, it’s a very good S . But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price
The original Discovery was based on the Defender of the time, but
nside, the ange over’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price
£22,500-£190,000
Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger elar. t’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild
Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £31,500-£95,000 Discovery 1 (1989-1998) because of its particularly handsome e terior. t’s based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace but has greater off-road ability and is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. he interior is and over’s most advanced cabin to date, with
spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. t’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get. Pros: Luxury, price, a Land R ’ Cons: E
with a 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, e ible cabin. t was well e uipped and refined to drive, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. ver time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,
The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: P , , glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run
£31,600-£55,000 hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 vo ue escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive. Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid
£1000-£18,000 and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts E Cons: T ’ been doused in sea water

Discovery 5 (2017-on)
The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

Pros: Td5 power and reliability, great all-rounder, lots of choice Cons: Chassis rust, electronics, leaky sunroofs, air suspension
most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco was prone to body rust, the D is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. NOT MANY VEHICLESs that are knocking on for quarter of a million miles can claim still to be worth as much as they were new. But that’s Land Rovers for you. And this 1995 Defender 90 is a perfect example. It’s been completely rebuilt on a galvanised, etch-primed and Buzzweld-treated chassis, giving it a rock-solid base from which to start work on the march to half a million. Actually, it’s only on 238,000 miles so far. But who’s counting? The number is pretty meaningless, anyway, because its 300Tdi engine and R380 gearbox have both been completely rebuilt. This was around 22,000 miles ago in the case of the engine, and 35,000 in the case of the gearbox, so it’s just nicely run in now. And since then, it’s had a new clutch set, cambelt and more oil and filter changes than you can shake a dipstick at. The axles, suspension arms and brackets have all been cleaned and Buzzweld treated, too, prior to going back on with a full set of polyurethane bushes. The underbody also got the treatment, and the crossmember below the rear tub was galvanised. Then there’s the list of new parts that went on during the rebuild. It’s probably easier to list anything that wasn’t, but we’re talking about the brakes, springs and shocks, exhaust, radiator, props, fuel tank, engine temperature sensor and steering drop arm – as well as every nut and bolt that was wound off during the process of dismantling it. It’s rare to see a Defender getting rebuilt without at least a bit of bling on it, and the 90 has had a variety of LEDs fitted as well as a DRL bumper. There are silicone turbo and coolant hoses under the bonnet, and a new set of BFGoodrich tyres on Sawtooth alloys. But that apart it’s just a very sound Tdi 90 with a lifetime still ahead of it. It’s not perfect, though. The seller says both doors are rotting at the bottom and that the bodywork is ‘not brilliant,’ with a few bits of rust popping up and some paintwork needing to be sorted out. The headlining is sagging, too. Finally, the seller says the 90 needs a new transfer box. And if you were around when the 300Tdi was in its first flush of youth,
