2017 has been an exciting year for The Lanes and for Carlisle. It has marked our first full year with Primark as an anchor store, the launch of our loyalty scheme, Lanes Xtra, new Christmas decorations and the opening of our new Costa store to name just a few. The multitude of events within the City and the superstars that have entertained us have only served to strengthen Carlisle as one of the go to destinations in the area. We have never been as proud to be a part of this City and are excited for 2018 and what the coming year will bring. As a thank you to all of our customers, we have launched our first ever Lanes Christmas gift guide to inspire you this festive season. K ATI E LOX TON – ONE YE AR ON It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since Katie Loxton opened its doors. The store has developed a strong following in and around Carlisle and the regular online competitions always proves popular. The Katie Loxton range has grown over the year and now includes ipod and ipad cases, personalised notebooks, blankets for the home and even new baby gifts. Christmas will see even more new products including crackers, festive candles and diffusers and a very sparkly take on their signature pouches. Be festive ready with the latest make up looks and trends as showcased by Bridget Foster, make up artist. Follow this step by step guide to get the fool proof Christmas party look!

S T E P 1 - E Y E S - DUR IN G THE DAY 1

Prep your eyebrows first using an Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden all over the eye lid and use this to sharpen up the eyebrows too.

Use a Benefit Precisely My Brow pencil working inside out filling in gaps drawing hairs on for natural look or full fill for a darker, dramatic look.

Start with Benefitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hoola bronzer to frame the eye brushing in from the socket line with a fluffy brush giving the eye warmth and framing it.

We have used the Dior Fascinate eye palette for this look. Start with the dark matt shade first concentrating on the outer corner. Then take the middle shade and brush it on the middle of the eye lid wherever the light hits it. Take the palest shade and apply to the inner corner of the eye lid. Top tip: Doing this actually opens the eye and brightens the look. Take this lightest shade and also place under the eye brow to open up the eyes even more, then take a larger fluffy brush and blend in the colours. To finish the eye, we have used a Dior fusion mono 621 mirror sparkle pot. Scatter this over the eye lid using a normal tight brush pushing it into the skin.

Using a flat brush, take the Maybelline liquid eyeliner in black and make a tight line in your lash line, going underneath the eyelash and over the top framing the eye. Top tip: By getting the eyeliner tight in the eye line it actually makes the eye look brighter and whiter. Finish with YSL false lash mascara using the brush downwards first and then upwards to coat both sides of the eyelash. This finishes the eyes for the day time look.

GET THE LOOK

S TE P 2 - B AS E 1. Start with your foundation first and we used Dior Forever Long Lasting Foundation. Dab it around the face and then take a damp beauty blender sponge to blend in, putting on a nice even wash over the skin, creating an even coverage over the face. 2. Follow this with a small line of concealer and we have used YSL all hours concealer. Top tip: Use a slightly lighter shade to brighten down middle of nose, cupids bow, chin and under eyes. Blend this into the foundation using the beauty blender. 3. Take an illuminator and we have used Clinique’s chubby stick illuminator. Draw it across the cheek bone, cupids bow and bridge of the nose and use a beauty blender again to blend this in. This highlights key areas and helps to give the skin a glow. 4. Next, apply your powder, we have used Dior SKIN loose powder. Top tip: Apply your loose powder by pushing it gently into the skin and rolling at the same time with a large fluffy brush. Dust off to finish. 5. Take the Hoola bronzer again starting from the ear and flick the brush around the edge of the hairline. Top tip: Don’t brush the bronzer too far in or it will over exaggerate the cheekbone. Finish by adding a touch to contour either side of the nose. 6. Then take the blusher, we have used Benefit Coralister. Brush over the apples of the cheeks where the bronzer finishes. Top tip: Take your blusher shade and do a really light brush across the very top of the eyelid to bring all the warmth together.

S T EP 3 - L I P S 1. Apply your lip liner first. We have used Rimmel exaggerate lip liner in 105 shade. Start from the outside working in. Top tip: Take a lip brush and feather in the pencil to make the lips look fuller. 2. Take your lipstick and we have used YSL no 7 toetouge lip stain in matte. Fill in the lips starting in the middle and blend it out.

With a specialty in commercial shoots, Bridget firmly believes that skin should always look like skin ensuring all her make up is natural and photographs well with little touch ups. When asked what her all-time favourite make up product was Bridget said, “I always find it hard to pick just one product as they change as trends and technology change. However the longest standing product in my kit has to be Vanilla Pigment by MAC. It’s so versatile. You can mix it into foundations, wear as an eyeshadow and as a highlighter. Wet or dry. It has been in my kit from day one, 13 years ago.” Since her move back home to Cumbria, Bridget has moved on to bridal make up and has a large following through her online tutorials. HAIR Curl the ends of the hair with a straightening iron, wrapping strands of hair around the iron.

For a more dramatic night time look, take the brown shade in the Dior palette, brush underneath the eye along the eye line for a soft smoky look using a flat tight brush. Slightly dampen the brush and use the black shade to put underneath the lash line for a more darker look. Take the Maybelline eye liner again and put in the water line on the inside of the eye with a flat tight brush. Then, take the black shade of the palette and put over the eyeliner on the top of the eye with the same brush and the blend up and out to soften. Top tip: If you wanted to use the green shade in the palette, take the tight flat brush and add a soft line for a flash of colour along the bottom eye line.

LASHES

Curl each section of hair with the rollers starting back away from the face with the biggest size on top of the head working from the top down and the smaller rollers at the bottom of the hair. Top tip: The Velcro rollers will stay in themselves so no need to pin. Keep in as long as you can! Get some dry shampoo (Batiste volume is a good option as it has hold in it too), and spray at the roots as you take them out. Once the roller is out lightly back comb each section again at the root. Finish with an Elnette hair spray for a light spray to not weigh the hair down and not lose the bounce.

We have used Ardelle wispies false eyelashes, available from Superdrug in The Lanes. Measure the eyelashes along the eye to check they fit. If you need to trim, trim from the outside.Top tip: Wrap the eyelash around your little finger to create a curve. By wrapping the lash round your finger it gives it curvature and stops it coming off as you stick. Take your dual glue and use your fingers or tweezers and apply from the top the lash on your eyelash line. With a pair of tweezers, gently squeeze the false lashes with your own to really fuse them on. At the end use a liquid eyeliner, we have used Lancome’s version, and glide on along the eyeliner and the rim of the eyelashes. This will ensure the false lashes appear flush into the eye line. Josh has been taking photos since he was three years old and with a keen interest in landscape photography, Josh was keen to study at the University of Cumbria and take full advantage of The Lake District and surrounding area. Nobody knows meat better than Stonehouse Smokery. Using only free range organic pork, they raise and breed their own meat and cure, smoke and roast it from their farm in Moorhouse, Carlisle. The owner, Scrim, has kindly given us a cracking recipe that’s perfect for entertaining with over the festive season.

1. Peel and chop potatoes and onions and place in a pan of water then bring to the boil and simmer until cooked.

3. Add your potatoes and onions to the butter and mash well adding a good glug of extra virgin oil and salt and pepper to taste. 4. Mix carrots, olive oil, juniper, and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper and place in a roasting tray. Drizzle with a little honey to taste and roast. 5. Gently heat butter and olive oil in a frying pan with torn chorizo until the chorizo starts to melt. 6. Add pork and gently cook turning when starting to turn brown. add garlic & mushrooms and move to a hot oven (180c) for 10-15 minutes. 7. Take the pan out of the oven and remove the pork. Leave to rest on a plate & add a good glug of cider to the pan. Reduce by half and add 250ml good quality chicken stock. 8. Continue to simmer for a further 5 minutes then add the pork to reheat for about 2 minutes. 9. By this time your carrots should be ready, your mash still hot, so just carve your pork and drizzle over the sauce and your good to go!

50ml vodka 35ml coffee liqueur 1 shot (25ml) of Espresso Ground cinnamon 1 cinnamon stick, cloves, and coffee beans to garnish

The day before, fill a large container that will fit into your punch bowl with water. Reserve 6 raspberries. Divide remaining raspberries, and add half to container, along with half the blackberries. Freeze until solid. Just before serving, run the bottom of fruited ice under warm water until it releases from container. Place ice in punch bowl. In a cocktail shaker, muddle 6 raspberries, 3 strawberries, lemon peel and sugar. Add sloe gin, elderflower liqueur and cassis. Fill shaker with ice and shake. Strain over fruited ice in punch bowl. Add rosé Champagne. Garnish with strawberry slices and remaining raspberries and blackberries. To make mincemeat syrup, put 100ml water, the golden caster sugar and mincemeat in a pan and bring to the boil. Cool and strain though muslin into a sieve. Separately, mix the caster sugar and mixed spice, then dampen the rim of your Martini glass and dip in the sugar and spice mixture. Muddle the mincemeat in a cocktail shaker (you may need to make in 2 batches), then add the gin, sweet red vermouth, dark rum, 80ml mincemeat syrup and ice. Shake well and strain into your prepared glass.

Muddle four of the cranberries and one of the rosemary sprigs with the maple syrup in a shaker. Add the gin, cranberry juice and vermouth and vigorously shake with ice. Strain into a chilled glass. Top with a splash of Champagne. To garnish, place the remaining two rosemary sprigs into the marshmallow to create antlers, pushing one in far enough to come out of the opposite side. Attach the remaining cranberry to the end that is sticking out for the nose, and then place the two cloves between the nose and antlers to create eyes.

Fill the shaker with ice and pour the vodka, coffee liqueur and Espresso into the bottom half of a cocktail shaker. Give the ingredients a good shake, you want the ice to smash up while chilling the liquid down; it’s what creates the frothy top. Once shaken, place a strainer on top of the shaker and pour the contents through a sieve directly into your glass. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, ground cinnamon, small clove and coffee beans.
