Discover Days Transitions to Discover Nights By Jenna Shelton jshelton@lc.edu Traditionally, Lewis and Clark Community College holds a one-day event every semester for prospective students to be able to talk to program coordinators, check out clubs and organizations on campus and visit with financial aid and advising all in one day. This eventful day is normally, and accurately, called Discover Days, as not only prospective students, but also current students, can take the opportunity to see their potential future as they discover L&C.
There are program directors and instructors available to inform prospective students on how programs work and what the expectations may be for those who may be considering potential career paths. This is a great opportunity for students who are teetering between two or more paths and need more information to make an informed decision.
Although Discover Days has always been a huge success with 19 high schools in the district invited to attend, the novel coronavirus pandemic has thrown a wrench into the planning and execution of one of the most important days many high school students look forward to. Thanks to the creativity of those at L&C, Discover Days has been transitioned into Discover Nights to continue to inform prospective students of the great offerings at L&C and to do so safely for everyone involved while following any quarantine guidelines.
October 5, 6 - 7 p.m. L&C Honors College Automotive Technology
Ryan Hodge, Assistant Director of Admissions and Registration, said, “With this pandemic it has been difficult for us to bring big groups of prospective students on campus to meet with faculty and staff. This is a unique opportunity for these students to get to know the faculty and ask them questions about the major they are interested in. We encourage all students to sign up for a night to listen to what Lewis and Clark has to offer.”. Similar to Discover Days, where tables were set up in person, with flyers and people available to give information, as well as goodies such as free merchandise, Discover Nights has been formatted virtually so that there are different programs featured on Mondays and Thursdays evenings throughout the month of October. Each virtual Discover Nights program will be hosted on Zoom and Hodge said, “Each night we will have a bag full of L&C swag that we will be giving away for one winner per night that they can pick up at security.”. There will be opportunities to speak with financial aid and advising to discuss how the whole process works, how to apply for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), scholarships, how important it is to fill out applications for FAFSA and scholarships even if you don’t think you qualify because you’d be surprised at the money available for students, and just be available for any questions and concerns you have. Ace Erasure is
No Bueno Bueno
By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
As an asexual, ace erasure is something that is prevalent throughout society and is something that should be dealt with without haste. First of all, you might be thinking “What the heck is asexuality/ace erasure?”. To put it simply, asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction to others, but it is not as black and white as that. Asexuality is a spectrum from Apolthisexual (feeling no attraction and are repulsed by the idea of sex) to Aegosexual (no sexual attraction, but can have sexual fantasies). There is also demisexual (will not be sexually attracted to people until a preexisting connection exists), and then there is Gray-Asexuality, which is everything in-between Ace and Allosexuality. Ace erasure is the phenomenon of either lack of education of asexuality or denying they exist. This occurs in a few ways, for instance having a character being in a relationship when in reality they do not need to be. A famous depiction of asexuals is season eight, episode nine of the show “House” titled “Better Half” from January 2012. The episode has a subplot revolving around a woman Dr. Wilson is treating, who is in a caste marriage because they are asexual. House thinks that there must be a natural cause, and he was right as the husband had a brain tumor that caused him to have low sex drive and that the wife was pretending to be ace to please the husband. David Jay, the founder of the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, chastised Fox and the writers for asserting “that asexuality is problematic and pathological” and that telling the people who accept asexuality as a valid sexuality that they are wrong. A petition was filed telling Fox to reconsider the depictions of asexuals. Jay asserted in the article by Salon that, “If someone identifies as asexual, chances are they’ve already done a lot of deep selfreflection and analysis to come to that.” Other problems occur with people not accepting Asexuality into the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, with some people saying that the “A” stands for Ally (a person who is straight but supports the community), while most people, including the Associated Press, assert that it stands for Asexuality. If you want more info about asexuality, check out the Asexual Visibility and Education Network at asexuality.org. Page layout by Maria Martinez Nogueda

Bloodborne Will Challenge and Chill You By Andrew Agney aagney@lc.edu FromSoftware’s games are primarily known for their difficulty and are usually set in a dark fantasy world, but every once in a while the company branches out and tries something new. Their most successful example of this is their attempt at LovecraftIan horror taking place in the Victorian Era, a game all about hunting beasts while trying to keep your sanity, called Bloodborne. Taking place in the fictional town of Yharnam during an event called ‘The hunt’, the player takes control of a character only referred to as ‘The Hunter’ as they track down and kill beasts and otherworldly horrors plaguing the world, while trying to take care to not become one themselves. Making use of a trick weapon, a weapon that can transform into two different forms, and a firearm, the hunter takes on all sorts of monsters of different shapes and sizes with a combat system that fans of other FromSoftware titles, such as Dark Souls, might find much more fast paced and action oriented than they are used to. With use of the party mechanic to interrupt Page 5
enemies who are mid-attack, and the brand new Rally mechanic which allows players to recover health they have just lost by retaliating, FromSoftware heavily encourages players to play very aggressively and always try to be on the offensive. With several different kinds of weapons and statistics to invest in, there are countless play styles, paired with a new game+ that adds new items and makes the game more difficult, to keep the replayability of the game high to keep players coming back for more. Though, if you are starting a new game, it may take a long time to get that one weapon you want. The game is not for everyone however, the difficulty that FromSoftware is known for is very much prevalent in this game as well, and the visuals and themes of the game are not good for the faint of heart; as the title would suggest, there are buckets of blood throughout the game, Lovecraftian monsters and themes also pop up in the second half of the game and collectibles consist of stuff like eyeballs or parts of an umbilical cord.
Bloodborne cover art. Via Wikipedia. If you think you have the stomach and resolve to brave this game though, it is one of my personal favorites and the FromSoftware ways of storytelling are always amazing, subtle ways to convey the information of the story and world lore to the player. I give BloodBorne a 9.5/10 and would consider it a perfect game to play in October or just whenever you would like a dark, eerie adventure. Entertainment

Food Challenge: Air Fryer Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, Will They Roast? By Jenna Shelton jshelton@lc.edu With Halloween soon approaching and Lewis and Clark Community College’s Student Activities hosting a Pumpkin Decorating Contest, I just had to do some kind of Food Challenge that fit in with pumpkins, and what better than making pumpkin seeds! Ever since I was little, we would carve the pumpkins and spend hours going through the ‘guts’. Now that I am an adult, I know that the stringy insides of pumpkins are called the pulp, but I still like calling it their guts, digging out seeds so my mom could spend hours roasting them in the oven. As we got older, it was not worth the effort of spending the whole night baking, and so one of our traditions slowly died. If we wanted pumpkin seeds we could easily just buy a bag at the grocery store or a gas station, but nothing can beat the taste of homemade. So when I saw a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds that could be made in an air fryer, I got excited, thinking that this was an opportunity to start up some of my childhood traditions again with my daughter, but with a lot less work. My friend, Marenike Moyegun, was kind enough to donate her seeds for this challenge, as she prepared her pumpkin for the Student Activities Pumpkin Decorating Contest, and we started with the savory method of this recipe. There was also a sweet version that I added to the recipe card, just in case anyone wanted to try that style, that had great reviews. In the end, we only had to cook our seeds for just under 20 minutes, and even then some of the seeds were a bit too well done. I advise to watch the seeds very closely as they cook, because the instructions are incredibly accurate when it says that they go from good to burnt in seconds. Either way, they were absolutely delicious! soned Salt ***If you do not have Lawry’s Sea s such as 1 you can substitute other seasoning 1 teaspoon teaspoon of smoky paprika and sugar, 1 taof salt. You can also add ½ cup of ge the oil han blespoon of cinnamon and exc sweet treat! for 2 tablespoons of butter for a Page 7

The Vermillion Sky The Vermillion Sky Part 5
Exquise looks down, her eyes closed as a massive troll stands over her, about to crush her. “What an idiot...why’d I go and burn myself out like that?” she says to herself, the troll’s fist coming down... when all of a sudden, Exquise feels herself get pushed away, opening her eyes she sees a piece of paper with a wind glyph has been placed on her and a powerful gust is blowing her away...while Ciel stands where she was. “You idiot! What’re you doing?!” Exquise yells at the half-dragon girl while she gets blown away. “Saving your life!” Ciel calls after, before she gets slammed into the ground, the massive strength of the troll causing a crater. Ciel coughs and wheezes as the troll’s hand lifts up and she attempts to stand... when she notices something on the ground beneath her, uncovered by the floor being destroyed. “This is...a glyph!” she says to herself, quickly taking off her backpack and fishing out her notebook and a pencil; crushed after the troll’s attack, but still usable for what she needs as she begins to record the glyph into her notebook, where she has her other

spells written in. “Keep it busy, guys! I have an idea!” she yells out to the rest of her group. “You got it!” Syrid says as he runs up to the troll and claps his purple glowing hands together, creating several clones, this time they all start to run around and pester the beast, making it unable to find the real one as each one it manages to hit just poofs into dust. After transcribing the glyph into her notebook, Ciel gets some chalk out of her backpack and starts to draw this new glyph on to the ground, large enough to cover half the arena as she tries to work as quickly as she can, thankful for Syrid’s distraction. Once finished with drawing the glyph, Ciel runs over to Breeze and whispers in her ear, the goblin girl giving a nod in response. Ciel then runs to the edge of the Glyph she drew on the floor, and gives a sharp whistle. “Bring it over here Syrid!” she calls out, the shadow elf and all his clones giving a thumbs up as they all start to converge towards where Ciel is, alongside Breeze waiting for her cue.
The monster takes the bait as it follows the clones towards Ciel, stepping right in the center of the glyph. “Gotcha!” Ciel exclaims as she slams her hands down on the glyph, a massive explosion coming from the symbol and enveloping the troll, knocking it over onto the ground. Breeze then holds out her hands as they begin to glow green, the moss on the trolls body growing more and more until there’s so much of it that it’s too much for the troll to move, the beast just roaring and attempting to thrash about on the ground now. “The troll is unable to move or fight! The exam is over!” Principal BrokenAnvil calls as he floats down into the arena, some magic ropes coming out to retrieve the troll and take it back to where it was held. The four teens then return to the center of the arena, standing in front of the Dwarven principal. “Well done you four...here, drink these healing potions for your wounds,” he says as he hands a bottle of red liquid to each of the group “Once you are healed up… I will announce which covens you will be in.”
