These plans are ever-evolving, depending on a change of staff, additional maintenance truck, or any other conceivable resource. Sichra works with members of L&C to create adaptable “McGuivers” for a plethora of emergency situations. L&C Manager of Media Services Laura Inlow continually works with Sichra to ensure a well-prepared campus and played a pivotal role in preparing for a recent full-scale disaster exercise of tornado damage assessment.
“In addition to the 30+ years of emergency service experience that Chris brings to the table, he is a great liaison and ambassador for the college,” Lewis and Clark Director of Campus Security Brad Raish said. “Chris’s role with the city as the public safety director bridges a gap for when the college may need assistance from the city or county regarding emergency services. I look forward to continuing the relationship between Sichra Consultation Services and Lewis and Clark Community College.”
“Chris is wonderful to work with,” Inlow said. “He is highly skilled at Emergency Operations Planning, not to mention incredibly detail-oriented and organized. He has made the process of rolling out Lewis and Clark Community College’s Campus EOP smooth and seamless. Matters of Safety Being Measured from Every Angle at Lewis and Clark
By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
Imagine a lifetime of dedication in public service, from firefighting to military service, and a number of services in between. This is the life of Christopher J. Sichra, the emergency management, risk and safety consultant for Lewis and Clark Community College, public safety administrator for Godfrey, Illinois, and owner of Sichra Consultation Services L.L.C.
What’s in store for Sichra and L&C? “I am looking forward to conducting more complex exercises and developing additional procedures to making the campus response even more efficient than it is now, I also advocate for additional technology that could better protect the campus community,” Sichra said.
Board of Trustees
Newest Board members Hire Former Madison County Republican Party Chairman for Forensic Accounting Investigation By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
The Board of Trustees hired Forensic Accounting & Consulting Services, Inc. Principal CFE, and CPA Jeremy Plank, to do an audit of travel expenses of the senior administration for FY19. Plank was the Chairman of the Madison County Republican Party and supported the four newest board members, David Heyen, Julie Johnson, Kevin Rust and Charles Handfelder during their campaigns. On Nov. 7, the BOT voted for the approval of this agreement. But, before this could be voted upon NursingLearning Specialist at Lewis and Clark Community College Dawna Egellhoff had some words to share during the open comment portion of the beginning of the meeting. “It’s my understanding that the Madison County Republican Party helped support the campaign for the new board members. Jeremy happened to also take over the chair in January 2017. The same
year Mr. Heyen ran and was sworn into Lewis and Clark’s Board,” Egellhoff said. Egellhoff then went on to explain that this “Jeremy” is the same one who was hired for this forensic audit and has also been hired by Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. L&C Board Member Rust sits on SIUE’s Foundation Board, too. “I do play fair,” Egellhoff said. “Mr. Plank did step down from the Madison County Republican Chair so he could focus on professional endeavors, two months ago. I would think that the high profile and the outrage the community has towards the support for not giving Dr. Dale Chapman a contract would prompt them to seek professional investigation outside of the area to get unbiased information. Forgive me if I have trust issues, your behaviors have not warranted trust from me. I have grave concerns about the validity of information that would come from this company if
agreement is accepted tonight. There are just too many correlations for me to not question the morals and ethics agenda behind all of this… So my last question is Mr. Plank the one who’s writing your script?” In the previous board meeting Johnson questioned Chapman about how performance interviews were conducted for relatives among senior administration. Chapman confirmed that a nepotism policy is in place, and that the only relation that it currently pertains to is that of himself and his wife, Vice President of Academic Affairs Linda Chapman. All board meetings can be viewed on YouTube through L&C’s page. When it came time to vote for the approval of this agreement, long time board member Brenda Walker McCain expressed skeptism during the discussion period before the vote took place. “I read what the attorney had
prepared based on an inquiry, and it raised questions for me regarding the conflict of interest possibilities. And, I want to know has any trustees received financial support from this association. Because if so, this would look like a political payback to me, or to anyone else. So, I wanted to know that, and even though even voting on it would think that’s something they would abstain from,” McCain said. Rust then explained, “I don’t quite know how to answer that.” McCain expressed her concern with this answer and said it seemed like a conflict of interest, and asked who selected the firm. Johnson then gave her answer. “That was my doing,” Johnson said. “I know Jeremy and he’s in this line of work. I think he’d be good at it. He has experience with the college. He’s someone that I trust, and it’s very important in this line
of work that you trust who’s doing it because they might run across some sensitive issues, and it’s only $5,000.” McCain countered, “But honestly, Julie, you all question anything at any level, and you know him, I don’t know him. And then I also look at the fact you know we have historically clean audits, and we have an outstanding and qualified administration and accounting staff, and they have continuously provided you with numerous reports to great detail.” After more back and forth between McCain, Rust and Johnson as to the reason for the forensic audit, McCain said, “Well, I have a concern with the firm itself, since you cannot really pinpoint if any financial support was given.” In the end the board voted 4-2 in approval for theForensic audit and the hiring of Plank. Board Member Dwight Werts was not at the meeting.

Aijha Thomas By Gail Harper abharper@lc.edu
Ambitious, passionate, warm, vivacious, jubilant. These are a few words one might use to describe the ideal student or friend, and all of these things definitely describe Aijha Thomas, a student here at LC. Thomas is also a part of the radio program, and the promotions director for the station, so she runs the events, social media, and concert ticket giveaways.
School has been a rocky road--Thomas tried two different schools before coming to LCCC, and even at the beginning of her journey here, she was studying paralegal. She notes that life never works out the way you plan. “Back then...I guess I thought that would be right, but in my law classes I was like, ‘I’m gonna go to sleep in here!’ But every single radio class Thomas started the pro- [I’ve taken] I’m always gram in Jan. 2018, and has excited to be there, always loved it ever since, noting, happy, willing to learn.” “I genuinely feel like I’ve found my calling… I defi- She hadn’t always been nitely want to stay in radio.” interested in radio; it was in her role as a server at a senior living community The Bridge is... where radio was recommended. “My manager Editor-in-Chief happened to be walking Dillon Neibel by, and she said, ‘You dneibel@lc.edu know what I think you should do? From painting with Craig Hoffman, drawing with Chris Day, learning about print making and developing film from Jeff Vaughn and to making eye catching designs and logos from Steve Campbell, each one of these instructors has given me a valuable skill set to tackle multiple different forms of art media. It amazes me as to how lucky I’ve been to have so many instructors who are willing to dedicate their time to improving artists such as myself. They have made me into the artist I am today, and I am so very grateful for this experience. The nursing program is an excellent program! Overall, Halemeyer considers her teaching methods to be very interactive. She commented, “I like students to be active in class, and I prefer a relaxed, safe, and classroom environment. It’s better when no one in the classroom is scared to contribute to the discussion in class.” One of her greatest strengths as a professor is having the ability to put herself in the students’ shoes because she was a student for many years. She never has forgotten what it feels like to be a student. One of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of being a professor is helping students become successful, and she enjoys reaching all levels of learners in every classroom that she is in. Her proudest moment of her career so far was when she was promoted to professor here at LC.

Bridge to warehousing
Are you tired of your current place of employment? Does it seem as if the bills are piling up, one right after another? You simply don’t have the time to complete a college degree due to personal reasons, but you are willing to go back to school for a certification, which typically will take you eight weeks to complete and two days a week. This article here is just for you! Initially, there is no cost for this program, and it is full days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is designed for pass or fail, you will attend, participate and have marvelous attendance. Most of everything is done in class, which is located at Lewis and Clark Scott Bibb Center for Adult Education at 1004 E. Fifth St, Alton, Illinois 62002. Best of all, you will pass the class with three certifications: Forklift, OSHA 10 (ten hour OSHA Safety), and CPR First Aid Certificate. “This program is a wonderful opportunity for people who are interested in transportation, distribution and logistics,” said Rick Marshall, instructor of the program. Typically, you can have your high school diploma or G.E.D., but, by all means, it is not required. Actually, some students find it necessary to complete their G.E.D. while taking this course. It is an eight week program, and requirements

Students entering into the program will need to take a TABE Test, which tests basic reading and math skills as well as motivation for career readiness and all centered working in a warehouse environment. The age range requirement is very diverse, starting at 18 years old. “I think it does a very good job of not only preparing students for the workforce, but also pursuing other educational options,” said Kelly Meyer, who is a Pathway Advocate for Adult Education. letter from the editorial staff
Letter to the governor The following was written by Bridge Editorial Staff and sent to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker on behalf of the Lewis and Clark Bridge staff. Dear Governor Prtizker, The staff of Lewis and Clark Community College’s newspaper is writing to you today to call attention to the recent behavior of our newest Board of Trustees members: David Heyen, Kevin Rust, Julie Johnson and Charles Hanfelder. Their attitudes toward education are frightening. They are exploring the possibilities of closing campuses and reducing the opportunities for students and community members alike. They make vile, racist statements. In fact, the board chair, David Heyen, came under fire for making racist and xenophobic posts on his personal Facebook page. (We encourage you to watch the board meeting videos to see this board in action and look at the enormous board books. Links are included at the bottom of this email.) They are also treating our respected president, Dr. Dale Chapman, like a criminal. They voted not to even negotiate a new contract with him despite his stellar reputation as a leader, and they are hiring a special auditor to investigate him. This investigation is un-needed, and it is the real waste of taxpayer money. Speaking of which, Chairman Heyen unseated Bob Watson, whose daughter, Jennifer Watson, prosecuted and convicted Heyen of income tax fraud in 2005. We think he has a personal vendetta against our school. We believe people who have been convicted of tax fraud should not have any say concerning our school board, a tax-governing body. This entire situation is incredibly unfair, and we are scared for our school. In the five months they’ve been on the board, the newest members have done serious damage to our reputation and future prospects. Imagine the damage they can do during their entire six-year terms. These new board members are obviously trying to destroy our great institution from the inside. We really hope there is something you can do. Advice would be nice, but we need action. We need your help. Otherwise, our exceptional school, a downstate gem, will not survive these divisive board members, who know nothing about higher education. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, The Bridge Staff at Lewis and Clark Community College Dillon Neibel, Gail Harper, Ashtyn Britt, Krystie Morrison, Devin Meyers, Lance Snow, Donnie Becker, Alex Johnson, Olivia Bettorf, Lena Greelin

mobap gives some whoopie and hugs to L&C Students
By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
hEarlier this year, Missouri Baptist University held a cleverly-titled event in Fountain Court outside Red Cafe for the students to partake in some free Whoopie pies and Hugs juice. The event went on for a few hours and was promoted by Missouri Baptist University representatives, as well as Missouri Baptist’s cheerleading squad. One of the cheerleaders, Jacie Coleman, said she and her team were there “to represent Missouri Baptist University.” Missouri Baptist University is a well-known university that offers many 2+2 Programs at Lewis and Clark Community College to help current students move forward to gain a bachelor’s degree.

The event had two different flavors of Whoopie pies for passing students as the cheerleaders performed a few routines along with music that was generously supplied by Jared Hennings, the advisor of Student Activities and the Black Student Association. The event was well-received by most, and not only offered the opportunity of a free snack on the way to class, but also to know more about Missouri Baptist University and how they can help further Lewis and Clark students’ education.

105 Year Old Still Enjoys Life By Hannah Kahlt
Kathryn Roberts, 105, said she still enjoys her life. She feels fine for her age. Her son Merle, from Colorado, and her daughter and son-inlaw Glenn, from Washington State, all came to join Mel and Myrna in Alhambra to celebrate Roberts’ 105 birthday, Friday, September 27. “I have a wonderful life and lots of friends,” she said. “I still enjoy life— that’s the best part. Memories are all I have, and I never let the bad memories stay around.” Roberts said she is very surprised she can do the things she does and that she still has her mind, “even though it’s forgetful.” Roberts taught first and fourth grade at Bunker Hill schools for many years. She is unable to remember the number of years, but she has definitely not forgotten her students. She still asks about them and their families. She remembers so many details about Bunker Hill and her drives to work from Alhambra. “I would like to tell all of my pupils I still love them and wish the best for them,” Roberts said.

Almost every year, Roberts is able to write poems and is quick to share them.

First, you must preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Second, be sure to grease an 8-inch cake pan with a little bit of butter and lay in a baking sheet. Third, sift the salt, baking soda, baking powder, and flour into a medium bowl before mixing together. Fourth, in a separate large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar until they ’re well combined. Fifth, add the vanilla and oil into the egg and sugar mixture until well mixed. Sixth, add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix well. Seventh, add the buttermilk and mix well until the cake batter is the desired consistency. Eighth, pour the batter into the cake pan and cook in the oven for 20 minutes or until you can stick a toothpick in and it comes out clean. Ninth, let the cake cool until it reaches room temperature. Tenth, to make the buttercream icing, mix 1 cup of butter, the powdered sugar, the vanilla extract, and the heavy cream slowly until it becomes light and fluffy. Eleventh, get a large clean bowl and crumble the cooled cake up inside the bowl. Twelfth, add 1 ½ cups of icing into the bowl and combine until it reaches a dough-like consistency.

The lunar astronomy correctly indicated that the repression of the moon’s gravitational influence brings about social tension, disharmony and bizarre results. Another study that looked at data over a 5-year period from police records in Florida showed an increase in cases of homicide and aggravated assault around full moons.

THERE IS GOING TO BE A NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! I say this due to the fact that there is going to be a full moon on Friday the 13th in December, and much like any horror movie, this is something that is somehow nightmarish on Friday the 13th. I also would like to point out in the film “The Nightmare Before Christmas” by Tim Burton, there was a full moon when the main character Jack Skellginton took over Christmas Eve, giving his scary toys to the girls and boys around the world.

“Not Quite Over You” By Susan Mallery By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
If you are into love stories that have the kind of love starting when a couple are just teenagers, then you will definitely enjoy reading this book. Silver and Drew were both just teenagers when Silver found out she was pregnant with their baby girl. Certainly, she was confused and did not know what she wanted to do in regard to her pregnancy, but one thing for sure, she had to inform Drew. Drew had just graduated high school and was off to college. He comes from a very rich family who owns a bank, and education tends to be a number one priority in their lives. Of course, he was madly in love with Silver, but she insisted on breaking up their relationship right before he went off to college. Initially, a few weeks had passed by from her first finding out about her pregnancy, and it was time for her to tell Drew. One day, she traveled to his college campus to inform him of her being pregnant. He was so confused and felt like he needed to marry Silver because of her being pregnant. Well, Silver did not want to be his wife. In fact, she thought it would just be better for him to sign paperwork for giving their baby up for adoption after birth. I think that was being very selfish of both of them for wanting to give their baby up for adoption after birth. Personally, I could not carry a baby inside my stomach for nine months and afterward, just let my baby go live with complete strangers. My feelings would be hurt terribly bad, and I would feel as if I would be letting my baby down as being her mother. Certainly, adoption is far better than abortion. But when two teens are being sexually active
Leigh for letting Silver come live with her and care for her. This reminded me of when I was pregnant and went to stay with my aunt for the summer. Silver never had any contact with Drew about Autumn. If I were living with my child’s adoptive family, no matter what the situation is, I would let my child’s father at least know something about his daughter, whether we were together or not! Overall, I just think Silver and Drew were very young and confused, as well as not knowing anything about raising a child. Throughout the years time passed, and Silver became a business owner and Drew worked at a bank his grandfather owned. “It’s A Thin Line” by Kimberla Lawson Roby By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Marriage is depressing when your husband keeps you away from your family and loved ones. Being beaten on numerous occasions and being a victim of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse can cause long term damage throughout a woman’s life.
Sometimes, Phillip would call Gina and play mind games on the phone with her, pretending as if he was going to kidnap their two children and take them away. If I were her, I would have called law enforcement right then and there. Unfortunately, Gina did not call them.
Gina and Phillip seem to be the couple every other couple dreamed of becoming. They have two adorable children together whom they both love dearly. Gina is very wealthy from her career as a Writer and Phillip is a factory worker. He is still able to enjoy the wealthy lifestyle of having a BMW, a nice home and not a financial worry in the world. Gina has one sister named Sydney and a brother named Rick.
One day, Phillip just couldn’t take the fact of being away from Gina and their children. He called, questioning her in the midst of stalking her. But Gina provoked him really badly by telling him she had another man in the house with her. I would have never said that to my ex boyfriend.
A primary story point is that Gina was kept away from her family due to the physical abuse she suffered from. You should know that her husband was her abuser. She was terrified of him and always did as he demanded. Otherwise she would suffer from black eyes and bruises all over her body.
It’s a Thin Line cover. Image via Amazon. Gina loved her brother Rick and sister Sydney as well as her mother Delores, who was hospitalized due to a stroke. Sydney and Rick really needed their sister by their side. But of course, Phillip did not allow her to even spend time Phillip was very jealous of Gina’s career as a with her mother and family at the hospital. It Writer. Gina experienced. But you have to be strong enough to say to yourself, “enough is enough” Certainly, it’s very challenging being a victim of and move on with your life. One thing I dislike domestic violence. I remember when I used to think about this book is that Gina had plenty of times everyone was against me as well as feeling I couldn’t in the beginning of the abuse to get away trust anyone. This was mainly due to listening to all and ask for help. I mean, she was financially the harsh words coming from my abuser’s mouth. stable and had no need to be dependant on Philip. Thankfully, my ex and he didn’t take it seriously either, my child did not have to experience witnessing but I constantly called law enforcement. Until, the abuse I suffered from while it was occurring. one day, I up and left with no looking back.
Eventually, Phillip became so outrageously mad he began to kick down Gina’s front door to her home, the place of residence where it was court ordered he was not allowed to come. He kicked the door down and went straight to the kitchen for a knife, with the intent of stabbing her. Gina went for a kitchen drawer where she had been keeping a handgun for her protection. She began to shoot one shot after another, until she had fired four shots and he was dead. Personally, I’m not sure I would have had the courage to kill my ex boyfriend. But, if I had been pushed to the point of being in a life or death situation, I wouldn’t have had a choice but to act quickly in self defense to save my life. After all the trauma Gina went through from being abused, two years later her mother passed away from the tumor that had grown in her head. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book because it reminded me of how my life used to be in so many different ways, and how I overcame everything to become the strong woman I am today by leaving it all behind me. Throughout the book it gave numerous examples of how families are never perfect. Everyone has their ups and downs with their sisters and brothers, but at the end of the day they are still there for one another, no matter what the issue may tend to be!

Disney+ Gets an A+! By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
There has been a large rise over the last few years in streaming services that most people enjoy, whether it be Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or even CBS All Access. Now, Disney has entered their hat into the online streaming ring, and it has so far been making a large impact. I myself have been using the surface, and have been revisiting some hardcore nostalgia. When I was a little girl, I had a large collection of Disney videotapes that I would switch out and watch all-day every day, and now as a grown woman in my 20s, not much has changed. I’m still watching Disney movies nearly all-day, except now it’s on Disney+! The experience definitely takes up a lot less space than owning over forty videotapes set up in piles. It isn’t just Disney movies that are featured on
“Lady and the Tramp”, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, “Noelle”, “The Mandalorian”, “Encore”, “Float”, “Forky Asks a Question”, “Marvel Hero Project”, “The World According to Jeff Goldblum”, “Pixar in Real Life” and “Disney Family Sundays.”

Disney+ though, the service also includes Disney Channel series, Disney Channel Movies, shorts, Pixar movies, Marvel movies, Star Wars, and National Geographic! Also included are a few programs from Fox, like the Simpson’s! Disney+ has also offered a few original programs exclusive to the streaming service, including a live-action version of
Disney+ offers its customers a free week to preview, as well as either a monthly fee of $6.99 or a bundle package including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for $12.99 per month. The service is available on Apple products, Google products, Sony products, Androids, Rokus, computers and on Xbox One as either the website or a mobile app. I personally would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys all of the programs the Disney company has to offer, as it is worth the streaming time and the money!

Lady and the Tramp 2019: Can This Old Movie Learn Some New Tricks? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu

With that being said, now I will get to the spoilers. We do see more from Tramp in this movie, too, I found it to be an interesting choice that they such as how exactly he interacts more frequently changed Jim Dear and Darling, Lady’s owners, with the other dogs and the other people in the to be an interracial couple. We also see Peg and Bull, who had been shown earlier escaping the dog catcher and again in the pound to see the classic “He’s a Tramp” song, are also adopted and live a very happy life with their owner who gives them plenty of bones from the local butcher shop. The ending, as expected from Disney, is a very happy and loving one. What I think I love most about this remake, though, is the message, which was shown a few times, which is that people should seriously consider adopting animals to make them a part of their happy homes. Too many animals are abandoned or left to starve- or worse- in the streets, when the truth is they want to be loved just as much as people do. It is even better to know that all the dogs involved in this movie were rescue dogs who now not only starred in a movie, but who have a home to go to, whether it be from the crew or the actors. I not only highly recommend this adorable movie for your next date night, but also to take into serious consideration adopting a new furry friend from a local shelter or pound for your own home to love.

The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of Rhythm Games by Gary Chapman
People were busting through the Walmart doors, running to the back of the store, and grabbing a bunch of similar oblong boxes in November 2007. Those boxes were cases of “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.” In 2019, 160,000 followers on Twitch and 870,000 subscribers on Youtube watch someone play a similar game after a rebirth of rhythm games. Rhythm games are a genre of games that tests the player’s sense of rhythm. Examples include Activision’s “Guitar Hero,” EA’s “Rock Band” and Sony/Harmonix’s “Amplitude.” There are more arcade-based rhythm games including Konami’s “Dance Dance Revolution” and Taito’s “Groove Coaster.”
Due to “Clone Hero’s” support of the 6-fret controller, people are buying the controllers to play with. “I’m glad ‘Clone Hero’ keeps GHL alive. The game was genuinely fun and a good alternative playstyle, but the channel streams I couldn’t find myself to play all the time. Also, I was broke back then so I couldn’t pop in $15 to just get unlimited plays every now and then,” streamer Alec “Acai” Castillo tweeted. Other versions of “Guitar Hero” include “Guitar Hero: On Tour” on the Nintendo DS, selling 42,000 in its first week. Previous clones of “Guitar Hero” include “Frets on Fire,” a rudimentary clone that was later replaced by “FoFix,” a modified version of the game. Rock Band has “Phase Shift,” which is popular for its drums and keys support but is criticized for its engine.

In the lower Illinois Valley (LIV), which is the Middle Woodland (also known as Hopewell from 100BCE - 450BCE), people began settling in the valley and building mounds. LIV mounds are not just big piles of dirt for archaeology of Elizabeth 7-Bluff Crest. The community cemetery is known as Pete Klunk 2-Bluff Crest and Kamp 9-Flood plain. Mounds are more than just big piles of dirt and holes dug into the ground. Some of the mounds were only used for burial sites. It’s archaeology which is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains. Typically, mound structures are cleared and prepared surfaces with ramp/ tomb complexities, as well as sod ramps, additions/extensions and massive layers.

Church Blazer Beat: No In The Wild:
L&C’s
Scintillating
Photo from L&C Flickr. The women’s soccer Trailblazers tremendous 2019 run earned the team a spot in the NJCAA Division I National Championships, a spot Tim Rooney’s teams have grown familiar with in recent years, the team’s third trip in the last four seasons. Unfortunately, L&C fell just short of the ultimate goal, losing 5-3 in the semifinal round to Monroe College of New York City. Despite the loss, the team can hold their heads high following an exemplary 2019 season. Finishing with 20 wins and only 4 defeats, the Trailblazer women were one of the most dominant teams in women’s collegiate soccer this season. During nationals, the Trailblazers had to battle
By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu That time of year again friends, Christmas ads as far as the eye can see. Thanksgiving gave us a mediocre holiday meal (yeah I’m sayin’ it: turkey stinks!), but most importantly, it’s basketball season, or as the kids say, SZN. After a less than stellar record in last year’s campaign, coaches Doug Stotler and Kavon Lacey and crew will be looking to make a step up the NJCAA Region 24 ladder. I interviewed coach Stotler prior to the Trailblazers last preseason contest at Riverbend Arena. While the 2018-19 season might have included a highlight moment in coach Doug Stotler’s 400th win as basketball coach, the 10-18 record isn’t necessarily one to raise a banner for. Nevertheless, Stotler believes that experience was good for their returning core of Ben Wright, Jalen Morgan, Ziven Clark and Jaquan Adams. Michael Jones is also returning this season, but was injured last season and didn’t play. “In junior college, basketball success is really predicated on having really good returning players,” said Stotler. “With freshmen coming in, it’s a learning situation for them, so we’ve really got to have a solid returning core if we expect to be any good. This coming season, we’ve got three guys that played significant minutes last year, so we feel like we have a good core.”
Season Ends at National Semis By Nathan Tucker
without the help of Olivia Cadwell, Jocelyn Wagner due to injury, and without second leading scorer Candice Parziani due to illness. One wonders if a fully-healthy team might have been able to capture the national crown. With the full complement at Tim Rooney’s disposal, Lewis and Clark found most of their regular season contests and even some of their regional and district postseason contests to be walks in the park, facing opposition that simply couldn’t compete on their level. Including nationals, the Trailblazer women outscored their opponents 128-19 on their over two dozen-game campaign.
came from L&C’s own national standout Boitumelo Rabale. Rabale led NJCAA Division I in goals, scoring 57, and assists, tallying 33 helpers. Rabale was responsible for a large amount of the L&C offense, often providing the spark and energy for the Trailblazers in the attacking third of the pitch.
Many of those 128 goals
Although 128 goals in 24 games is an impressive total, only allowing 19 in that same span is a credit to the solid defensive work that Tim Rooney’s back line put in. “Our defense has been solid all year,” Rooney said to Pete Hayes of The Telegraph before nationals. “We do possess the ball a lot, but our defenders have been consistent all year. We wouldn’t be going to the
Stotler, in year 25 on the Trailblazer bench, has seen virtually everything there is to see in L&C basketball from the sideline. “I think I’ve run the gamut of emotions,” Stotler notes, alluding to his experience. “I have reason to be optimistic, but I also have enough concern. We have a lot still to do to prepare and refine.”
“It probably doesn’t change our approach at all, but it definitely has a physical effect. The floor we were playing on wasn’t even three-eighths of an inch, closer to a quarter of an inch, and it sat right on top of concrete. We pounded and pounded on that every day. When you’re doing that for five months, it takes a significant toll on your body.
“I think from a scoring standpoint, our team is going to be very capable. What I’m more concerned about is our defense and defensive rebounding. We’re not a big team, but we’re going to be extremely quick, and I think that’s going to allow us to play a pretty fast brand of basketball.”
“The reason I know it has an effect is that it has an effect on me, physically. My hips and my knees and my ankles and my feet, last year and every year before that, were just aching after practice. This year, I haven’t noticed any of that. It’s legitimate, there’s a cushion with the wood floor, in that it flexes, it gives, it’s fabulous. Does it change our approach? It allows us to condition a little more aggressively, I guess that’s somewhat of a change, but we conditioned very aggressively before. It’s a bit of a challenge to figure out exactly how to maneuver with it.”
Stotler is aware, however, that the quick up-tempo game can be stifled by some of L&C’s opposition in Region 24. “We’ve got teams in our league that turn the game into a quarter court game where its about grinding it out, rebounding and walking the ball up slower. It really depends on what we’re going to be able to be really good at, and at this point we don’t really know that yet.” One thing Stotler does know: hardwood does wonders. In speaking to the coach in passing at volleyball games earlier in the semester, he noted the physical difference that George C. Terry Riverbend Arena’s new hardwood floor makes. In sitting down with him, I asked him to further expand on those thoughts.

national tournament without that defense, that’s for sure.” A long season comes to an end for the Trailblazer women. Falling short of the NJCAA Division I title isn’t the result that the Trailblazers wanted, obviously, but anyone who’s anyone in junior college soccer knows that the Lewis and Clark women are a force to be reckoned with.
Alton wouldn’t be Alton without Anarchy. Friday, Nov. 8 marks the return of the near-monthly Saint Louis Anarchy to Spaulding Hall in Alton. The event, dubbed “No Church In The Wild”, is sure to add yet another chapter to the lore of Anarchy in St. Louis and throughout the wide world of independent professional wrestling. Each match offers something enticing.
Most of this year’s national semifinalists will be back for their sophomore season next year, and will be hungrier than ever. Even as some talent leaves, and new faces join the team for the 2020 season, one can expect L&C Gateway Heritage to be back next year, and Championship Match: the next year, and the next. Jeremy Wyatt (c) vs. Mikey
Like it or not, Anarchy in 2019 starts and ends with The Monarch, Jeremy Wyatt. Wyatt has ascended to a new level since he claimed the Gateway Heritage Championship last May, and hasn’t slowed down one bit. One of the best wrestlers on the mat you’ll find anywhere in the sport of pro wrestling, Wyatt has often implemented “pure wrestling rules” in his Lewis and Clark Trailblazer coach, Doug Stotler. title defenses.
With the new hardwood under their feet, and preseason behind them, the men’s basketball Trailblazers will look to right some of last year’s wrongs on the court. At 10-18, the team didn’t really move the needle, not enough to earn a regional tournament by. With the experienced core joined by a talented freshman class, Stotler has set the bar high, but he feels it’s a bar that’s attainable. “Our goal will be to break into that top 5 programs in Region
24,” says Stotler. “Getting a bye in the first round of the Region tournament is a tremendous accomplishment in Region 24. Right now, Vincennes is #1 in NJCAA Division I basketball, John A. Logan is #3, and Olney is in the top 25. If we can somehow put together a season to join that top 5, I’d be extremely proud of that accomplishment.”
The Trailblazers’ season has already kicked off on the road, as most of their early-season action will be away from the Riverbend Arena, which is still in the midst of a $2.4 million dollar renovation. With a surplus of talent on the scoring end, including Lithuianian sharpshooter Amandas Urkis, who looked sharp in preseason play, the Trailblazers will look to outgun their opponents, especially those who lack the speed to keep up in transition. Becoming a top-tier team in Region 24 is a tough nut to crack, as coach Stotler points out. Vincennes has become ubiquitous in junior college basketball, like Duke or North Carolina in NCAA basketball. With a good core group returning and a more than capable freshmen class, this could be the year that Lewis & Clark joins the Vincennes and John A. Logans of the junior college basketball world.
One of my favorite St. Louis area wrestling matches of alltime is Wyatt’s title defense against Jonathan Gresham, a mat-based counter expert who nearly bested Wyatt at his own game. Wyatt’s critics, ones you’ll hear boo him as he makes his way out to the ring at Spaulding Hall, might say he doesn’t wrestle in a way that “wows” them. He’ll tell you he doesn’t give a damn what those critics say, and his lengthy title defense suggests he’s in the right. Of course, there’s always a challenger who believes they can usurp The Monarch. Enter Mikey, previously of Roscoe Eat Lisa fame. At the last Anarchy event, Battle of Spaulding, Mikey was one of two wrestlers to make a challenge for Wyatt’s GHC belt, and by way of asking first, is first in line to get his opportunity.
At Battle of Spaulding, Mikey talked about how he was cleared from injury, and was making a name for himself as a top competitor in Saint Louis Anarchy prior to being hurt. Mikey is a fan favorite, and the crowd largely agreed that it was his turn to take a shot at For a complete schedule and Jeremy Wyatt. roster for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, visit www.lc.edu/Athletics.

queer dating stories
Last Christmases and Last Crushes By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
variety of reasons, but the second they smile at you, you feel like you could melt into a weird pile of hormonal-goo. See? Very annoying! Crushes can also share a lot of similarities with the holiday season. At first, you have this warm and fuzzy feeling in your stomach and are filled with anticipation. You listen to a bunch of songs related to the subject and suddenly, it’s all that you can think about. Sometimes, it can even overlap between icky romantic feelings and the holiday season. (For example, the song Last Christmas by Wham!) Then, eventually, you grow cold to it and just hope it’ll be over with soon already so you can get back to your real life.
Coming to terms with one’s sexuality is at times a long and exhausting process. It took me many years to completely accept myself, and try to venture into the dating world. Over time, I have ended up collecting stories and lessons learned from my dating life, which I will now be sharing every month for roughly the next year. All names will be changed to protect the privacy of everyone mentioned, as they deserve anonymity and respect– no matter how bad the stories may have ended. Instead of telling these stories in chronological order, I will be telling them by order of importance of their morals. I’ll be frank with you, my lovely readers, the Holiday season tends to suck for me. It’s always ridiculously cold, you spend it with family members asking when you’re going to find a nice young man to settle down with, and are expected to drop more than a couple of hundred dollars for gifts that I am very unsure if my family members will even like. Even after a certain amount of years, the Christmas Carols and Holiday TV Specials start to feel significantly more dull than whimsical. So what exactly does this have to do with queer dating? Well, reader, I’m glad you asked! The Holiday season reminds me of another thing that tends to suck a lot for me, crushes.
The worst part is, you know the crush isn’t anything close to actual love. It’s all surface, attraction, shallow. So until it wears off, you’re stuck with the most annoying parts of having feelings for someone else, even when you have no intention of admitting to or acting on such feelings. Most people at one point or another will have a crush like this, and I deeply sympathize with you. Crushes really, really aren’t fun. Everyone, meet Ivy. Ivy is the most frustrating yet attractive person that I know. I met her not long after I stopped speaking to my last girlfriend. She was my type for sure, super tall, dark hair, pretty eyes, very beautiful, and very sarcastic. She knew how to make me smile and laugh, even when I didn’t want to. We always got along pretty well, and any time she looked at me with her sparkling eyes, I felt like something inside me was sparkling, too. While I definitely had insane butterflies around her, I never made a move or told her how I felt. There were a lot of extenuating circumstances that made it clear we should not cross any lines; I’d more than learned my lesson from Faith to recognize that red flags are red. For example, I don’t know if I’d describe Ivy as the most trustworthy or honest person. This especially became apparent when she would flirt with me, despite the fact I am pretty certain she’s involved with someone else.
make me wonder if I knew her at all, until I finally faced the fact I didn’t know her well at all. Sure, Ivy was very fun and could stir up some emotions within me, but that didn’t mean she was worthy of those emotions. It took a long time of learning from failed relationships to anticipate what the beginning of a failed relationship would look like, and Ivy was the perfect example. So, instead of telling her that talking to her was my favorite part of my day, or asking if she’d like to get some coffee sometime, I said nothing at all. I actively decided to let this crush wane away as I patiently wait for someone better who will come along and make me never have to write another cautionary love story again. It is not worth it to me to involve myself in needless relationship drama or another heartache as I figure out who I am and what I want in my life. While I enjoy Ivy, I definitely don’t need her to feel okay in my life. If I wanted to feel lovesick and smile a lot, I’d just rewatch “The 12 Dates of Christmas” again, or any other Hallmark Holiday movie for that matter. I wish I had more of a story to tell, but I simply don’t. Ivy is most certainly not my future, so I didn’t invest my time any further. Sometimes, that’s just how the story ends, without much of an ending at all. This is the way things go sometimes in life, and that’s perfectly okay. To be completely honest with you all, I’m much happier this way. This resolution makes things a lot more simple when there’s a clean break. I know it may not make for a great story, my dear readers, but at least I can offer you a pretty great moral instead!
I’m telling you all of this because crushes, while annoying, can also be extremely wonderful if you’re lucky enough to have a crush on the right person. However, there will be many people who are the wrong person to have a crush on, which is okay because eventually there will be the last crush who will become your last love. Your last crush will most certainly be the right person to have a crush on and they will remind you of evCrushes are ridiculously annoying to have. erything wonderful about love and the holidays. You can’t seem to get someone out of your I know if I were stranded on the side of a road They’ll be the embodiment of hot chocolate, twinhead, even if you don’t necessarily know them in the snow, Ivy is very far from my first call to kling lights, and how fun it can be to make snow that well. It’ll even happen when you make come to help me out. She would behave very angels. You just have to be patient enough for the effort to avoid them for what could be a differently with other people, and at times would them to come along. Happy holidays, everyone!

better know a sport: vintage baseball St. Louis Perfectos and Lafayette Square Cyclones.
By: Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
era. Largely, fans and ballists (the vintage baseball term for a player) are drawn to the vintage game because of its stark contrasts with the overly commercialized professional game. One will never witness a vintage baseball game at a stadium named after an insurance company; in fact, vintage baseball games are often played in open grass fields, with no bleachers, dugouts, or fences.
In an effort to not stray too far from last month’s inaugural edition of this column, my topic this month stays within the confines of the batted-ball game, this time a slightly more familiar concept: baseball. Not just any baseball, however, vintage baseball, which is more a precursor than a replica of the baseball we’re used to in the modern age. A Gentleman’s Game The term “vintage baseball” refers to a style of baseball that represents the way the game looked and was played from about 1860 to 1880, after it had evolved into baseball from the original British game of Rounders. Most vintage baseball being played today is being played under what’s known as Knickerbocker rules, more colloquially known as “New York rules” baseball. Vintage baseball is considered “a gentleman’s game”, meaning it’s mostly played by non-professionals of varying skill levels for recreation. While the heart of the game is the same– a pitcher, a batter, four bases 90 feet apart, most runs wins, nine players a team, that sort of thing– there are several key differences from the vintage game and the one played by our Trailblazers baseball team every spring. The vintage baseball is larger and softer than the modern ball, meaning gloves aren’t necessary. Not even catchers wear gloves, but that’s okay, because pitchers, standing 45 feet from the batter, are only allowed to throw underhand lobs to a circular home plate made of iron painted white. The goal of the pitcher isn’t to fool the batter as it is in modern baseball; it’s to serve a pitch to the batter that he can put in play, almost like a referee tossing up a jump ball in basketball. To the effect of that difference, strikeouts and walks are only called in incredibly rare circumstances. Typically the umpire will warn a batter who isn’t swinging at hittable pitches before calling strikes, and the same goes the other way, with a pitcher being warned if they don’t give the batter a ball to swing at.
St. Louis Perfectos batting. The game is designed for the batter to make contact to essentially start the play, and the contest really is whether or not the fielding team can get the batter out on the basepaths. There’s often no fences or boundaries, meaning that the only way to get a home run is to run all the way around before the fielding team can get the ball back to the infield. Running the bases is only slightly different. Baserunners can’t run through first like a modern baseball player normally would when hustling out a ground ball, and sliding isn’t allowed, as it was seen as undignified and in poor taste at the time. A batter isn’t awarded first base after getting hit with a pitch, nor is the pitcher ejected from the game, but in the 1860s, a pitcher would be fined a dime for his actions, according to Dartmouth Community Media. The Modern Vintage Game Vintage baseball, as stated, gained its form in the 1860s, but wasn’t played as an alternative to modern baseball until the 1980s. Keeping with the spirit of the game, vintage baseballers wear historically accurate clothing on game days. Gone are the Under Armour shirts and compression sleeves that permeate modern baseball. In their place are collared wool shirts, adorned by leather suspenders that hold up less than form-fitting slacks. Pillbox caps with tiny bills, metal-spiked cleats and long stockings for socks completes the look of the dashing ballplayer of the 19th century. According to the Vintage Base Ball Association, there are over 200 clubs keeping vintage baseball alive in the modern
Locally Speaking Of course, a city referred to as “baseball heaven” has to have some who prefer the baseball of old to what’s offered on TV or at Busch Stadium all summer, and you don’t have to go too far in and around the city to find a game of vintage baseball. There’s vintage baseball all around St. Louis, being played in grassy clearings at parks, VFW halls and almost anywhere in between. Every year (well, for six years going on seven now), the St. Louis area’s vintage baseball clubs, and a few from around the country, meet at Forest Park for the Saint Louis Cup, a vintage baseball tournament that spans an entire day with five fields of vintage baseball action. There are numerous teams in St. Louis alone, and more in the surrounding metro area, and likely even more that don’t have an online presence to be found. The Brown Stockings, Unions, Perfectos and Lafayette Square Cyclones all play within the St. Louis City Limits, with the Belleville Stags, Murphysboro Clarkes, St. Charles Explorers and Vandalia Old Capitals all playing within a scenic drive up a highway from the city itself. Each club prides themselves on bringing vintage baseball to a captive audience and serving as a historically accurate representation of the sport and life in the 19th century, like a Civil War reenactment, without all that pesky war business. Watching vintage baseball can take you back to a bygone era of American history, before professionalism and the business that goes with pro sports started to become bigger than the game itself. Vintage baseball leagues or teams won’t have any worldwide sponsorship deals anytime soon, and those involved with it wouldn’t have it any other way.

No Church In The Wild: A Saint Louis Anarchy Preview
Independent Wrestling TV Championship Match: Warhorse (c) vs. Curt Stallion Few wrestlers around the globe have become the online sensation like Warhorse. As you might have seen on your Twitter feed, Warhorse rules ass, and it’s not just because of his in-your-face ALL CAPS TWEETING or his metal-as-hell promos. In the ring, and in the rows of seats around it for that matter, Warhorse is a commanding presence, whether he’s throwing himself into a crowd of people or suplexing someone through a pile of chairs. At September’s Battle of Spaulding, Warhorse survived a war with deathmatch icon Nick Gage, that nearly tore down Spaulding Hall as we know it. The ring was destroyed, chairs were thrown everywhere, there was even a flaming skull for good measure. Since he captured the IWTV title, Warhorse has become a true force to be reckoned with in any ring he steps in.
Warhorse’s challenger at this edition of Anarchy is the Lonestar, Curt Stallion, who might be getting more recognition lately for his appearances on EVOLVE, but has consistently been a star of independent wrestling for at least the past two years now. Where Warhorse is a headbanger, Stallion is more a headbutter. Stallion’s forehead is potentially his most lethal weapon, and his matches often come to an abrupt halt when he hits one
and knocks his opponent’s lights out. Stallion was a late add to September’s Battle of Spaulding card, and reintroduced himself to the Anarchy faithful as he defeated Chip Day in a slobberknocker. The Besties In The World vs. The Workhorsemen After defeating Jake Dirden and Christian Rose last Anarchy, the usually talkative Besties In The World had one simple message: “F*** The Workhorsemen”. Saying such a thing in the wrestling business means you gotta have a rematch, those are just the rules. The Workhorsemen beat the Besties at Anarchy’s Circus Maximus event, and have since held a bit of bragging rights over the Anarchy favorites. As I’ve written before, it’s not Anarchy without the Besties. Davey Vega and Mat Fitchett have become part of the heart of independent wrestling. They are two of the Four Pillars of St. Louis Wrestling, a title given to them to honor what they are to the area’s wrestling scene. No longer a secret kept in the midwest however, the Besties are global, but so are the Workhorsemen, who were vying their trade in Germany’s highly regarded WXW promotion less than a month ago. Thomas Shire vs. Gary Jay A rematch of a bout held in Atlanta’s ACTION Wrestling last month, Thomas Shire looks to
avenge his October defeat to Gary Jay at No Church In The Wild. Shire might not be the favorite face of the more than 200 in attendance at Anarchy, but his grueling fight with Gateway Heritage Champion Jeremy Wyatt at the Battle of Spaulding might have won him some new fans in Alton. While Shire couldn’t dethrone the Monarch, he fought like hell trying to, and I personally always respect a wrestler who pulls the shoulder straps of their singlet down to signify that they mean business. Gary Freakin’ Jay, the Stiff Robo Ginger, the leader of the Gary Jay Movement, is more than at home at Anarchy. He’s spoken in the past about how much Anarchy means to him, and he’s potentially the true fan favorite in Spaulding Hall. Jay’s willingness to put his body on the line keeps the fans chanting his name, showing the Stiff Robo Ginger their respect for his ballsto-the-wall style of professional wrestling. His last Anarchy match might be considered a signature win for the Gary Jay Movement, as he beat Chris Dickinson with a thunderous shot and pinned Dickinson to secure the W. The Kenway vs. Anthony “Sharkbait” Gutierrez The now known as “The” Kenway is looking for retribution, even if the crowd doesn’t really want him to. After losing to Everett Connors, who had a little help from his bear, The Kenway needs a statement win
in Anarchy to answer his detractors. A victory over Anthony “Sharkbait” Gutierrez would be that statement win. The affectionately nicknamed Sharkbait has become not just an Anarchy regular, but also an EVOLVE regular for much of 2019. Gutierrez, who sports a 12-3 pro mixed martial arts record as well as an impressive wrestling record, is a fierce opponent in any ring. Chip Day vs. Aaron WIlliams Last at Anarchy in a losing bout against the returning Curt Stallion, Chip Day can whack with the best of them. That night, Day took exception to the Anarchy crowd’s seeming disapproval of him, and might have developed a negative attitude towards the Spaulding Hall faithful. Aaron Williams last competed in Anarchy in a losing effort against War Horse at this past May’s Hog Wild event, but is coming off a big win in a three-way battle against Michael Elgin and Jason Kincaid. Cole Radrick vs. Jake Dirden With the previously scheduled Craig Mitchell now missing No Church In The Wild, Cole Radrick steps into singles competition with Jake Dirden. After impressing in a multi-man match at the previous edition of Anarchy, Radrick, repping indie faction IFHY, will look to impress and climb the Anarchy ladder. Dirden comes off a tag team loss to the Besties, but stood strike-for-strike with the victors and then some.
Reigel Twins and Ace Perry vs. Evan Gelistico, “Big Beef” Gnarls Garvin and ??? The Reigel Twins are quick, precise and a bit dastardly. Victorious over the Diamond Dogs at Battle of Spaulding, the twin tag team adds Ace Perry, who’s looking for revenge facing Evan Gelistico, who won the Battle of Spaulding fourway match he was also a part of. Joining Evan Gelistico is “Big Beef” Gnarls Garvin, who’s all beef and knows how to use it. According to Evan Gelistico on Twitter, Everett Connors will not be joining the team, so the two are looking for a third to level the playing field. Larry D vs. Christian Rose Last but certainly not least, the current and three-time IWA MidSouth Heavyweight Champion Larry D comes back to Anarchy to showcase his fist-oriented brand of wrestling to the Anarchy faithful. In his previous Anarchy appearance, at Circus Maximus, Larry D lost to Craig Mitchell, and looks to rebound. Christian Rose joined Jake Dirden in a losing effort against the Besties In The World, and is in a similar position. Both competitors will be hungry for an Anarchy victory at No Church In The Wild. All of this exciting grappling action invades Alton’s Spaulding Hall on Friday, November 8. For those outside of the St. Louis area, the event will be live on Independent Wrestling TV.

Anarchy Invades Alton: A No Church In The Wild Review By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
Pre-show festivities: Ethan Cash and Private Eye Slade Porter were victorious in the two surprise pre-show matches, observed by a polite crowd who were potentially more invested in waiting for their pizza to come from the bar. Spaulding Hall’s pizzas, elivered right to you at your seat as you watch the action, has developed a fanbase of its own. I unfortunately rm missed a share of pre-show of match one, in line for a es- pepperoni pizza, but as a all journalist, I offer my unbiased ny; review of the famed pizza:
in es. I ordered the true classic
slice, a good ol’ pepperoni pizza, no frills, no buffalo or to bbq sauces. With the rush of ed early Anarchy fans attempting ave to get and eat their pizzas ge before the main show started, ng I waited for about five-ish ost minutes in line and another ng 15 or so for the pizza to be bs, brought out to my seat. The he pizza, a thin crust, squareans cut offering, was what some on. would call “well done”, with blackened crust around the ore edges and a bit of char to hat some parts of the cheese.
wn are While the crust was too crispy with to enjoy, the rest of the pizza les flourished. Before I knew it, ng I had powered through half elf. a pizza. A couple in the row

Okay, back in the ring, Everett Connors was addressing Raul the Bear, who apparently has been interfering in Connors’ match, unbeknownst to the competitor. ng While I do really enjoy The ng Kenway’s wrestling style, and 8. his new intro music slaps, I’d uis be remiss if I didn’t state that on the Anarchy faithful gave his TV. dad a more loving reception.
Anthony Gutierrez never looks panicked or overly out of sorts in a wrestling ring, having seen it all spanning his professional mixed martial arts and professional wrestling careers. Sharkbait’s mat training and offense overwhelmed, and he ended the match with a stiff kick to The Kenway’s jaw. The Kenway would need help to the back following the match. Chip Day def. Aaron Williams Aaron Williams was greeted with a “Welcome back” chant from the Anarchy crowd, and also received a roaring ovation when he removed his very real tie mid-match. Chip Day, who didn’t quite get the reception he was looking for at Battle of Spaulding, met a much warmer and more welcoming audience at No Church In The Wild. This was the first of several strikeheavy matches. Both men chopped the hell out of each other’s chests, but it was ultimately Chip Day’s stiff kicks that proved the difference. Christian Rose def. “ The Best Hand In The House” Larry D Christian Rose is the second member of Greg Jovi’s villainous stable in action at No Church In The Wild, with Jovi accompanying him to the ring. Larry D threw his weight around in the best way in this match, using a size advantage to counter Rose. Rose called timeout mid-match, which, if you’re not familiar, is not a thing in professional wrestling, and used the momentary confusion of Larry D and the official to turn the tide of the match. With the referee distracted by Jovi, previously mentioned stablemate Jake Dirden came out and incapacitated Larry D, and Rose sealed the victory. Gary Jay def. Thomas Shire When I saw this match on the card, I had a feeling that it had “steal the show” potential. It got out of hand quickly. Shire threw Gary Jay out of the ring early on, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Shire German-suplexed Jay onto chairs and the cold, hard tile of the Spaulding Hall floor. Jay and Shire were throwing chairs at each other on the outside, fans running for both safety and a better view. Both competitors have earned a reputation for putting it all on the line, and this match was a shining example of why that is. Back in the ring, an exchange of strikes ended with Gary Jay landing a vicious shot, and he unexpectedly won via knockout. The finish left some confused, with those in the back without a clear view of the ring wondering why all the sudden Gary Jay’s music was playing. Especially not happy with the finish was Greg Jovi, Jake Dirden and Christian Rose. They effectively kicked Thomas Shire out by continuing to lay waste to Shire after the match had ended. In a shocking twist, Angelus Layne, who had previously
The crowd amped up for anarchy at No Church in the Wild. announced at Anarchy last year she was leaving wrestling following a neck injury, appeared to save Thomas Shire, but then kicked him as she was standing on a chair (a Saint Louis Anarchy no-no; it’s one of the rules) and was joined in the ring by Jovi, Dirden, and Rose. What does the return of Angelus Layne hold for Saint Louis Anarchy? “Diamond Cut” Ace Perry and The Reigel Twins def. Evan Gelistico, Everett Connors, and “Space Jesus” Billie Starkz While I had thought “Big Beef” Gnarls Garvin was going to be in this match, it was a pleasant surprise to find out Billie Starkz was in action at Anarchy again. Starkz, or “Space Jesus” has become an Anarchy fan favorite, and showed why in this match. Everett Connors might have the best wardrobe going in wrestling today, and Evan Gelistico was attempting to keep up wearing some great light-up high tops. The Reigel Twins and Ace Perry are jerks, but very gifted athletes. The Reigels make a dynamic duo, and even pulled a bit of “twin magic” in this match to confuse Everett Connors. The Twins have even caught the eye of the prestigious New Japan Pro Wrestling, recently booked to compete at New Japan’s Lion’s Break events in December. There’s no doubt that the Reigel Twins are starting to make a claim for the hottest tag team going in Anarchy today. Independent Wrestling TV Title: Warhorse def. Curt Stallion If you haven’t heard, or haven’t been on wrestling social media lately, you might not know that Warhorse rules ass. Warhorse has consumed the man once known as Jake Parnell, and he’s ascended to new heights, marked by him capturing the Independent Wrestling TV Championship. His reign has been highlighted by kicking guys out of chairs, headbanging, and as previously noted, ruling ass. Curt Stallion is no slouch himself, and while he might not yell as much as Warhorse, his ruthless offense speaks for itself. A “Both these horses” chant met the two as they squared off for the first time. Stallion seemingly threw everything but the kitchen sink at Warhorse, but the man wouldn’t budge. On several pin attempts,
Warhorse kicked out before the ref even counted once. Stallion was befuddled, and figured he just needed to turn up the intensity to best the champion. You simply cannot be more intense than the current iteration of Warhorse, and eventually Stallion tapped, the Independent Wrestling TV champion retaining his crown. The Besties In The World def. The Workhorsemen The fan favorites in this one were clear from the outset. As I’ve reiterated in just about every review or preview I’ve written, Anarchy wouldn’t be Anarchy without the Besties. The Besties, in so many words, demanded a rematch with the Workhorsemen at Battle Of Spaulding, and Anarchy made it happen. The Workhorsemen are well respected, but not necessarily liked by the Anarchy faithful. The precise tag team offense of the Workhorsemen was on display at No Church In The Wild, primarily, attacking Bestie Mat Fitchett’s left leg, his plant leg, and leaving Davey Vega, the other Bestie, watching from the corner. The referee of this encounter was intent to keep the match from boiling over, and kept Davey Vega fairly locked inside the Besties corner, while it seemed he didn’t quite manage the Workhorsemen’s corner as much. Not being able to plant on a hurt left leg, Mat Fitchett couldn’t get enough force behind his strikes to do much damage to either Anthony Henry or JD Drake. It was the heroics of Davey Vega, pulling his hurt Bestie through some tag team offense, that won the match for the good guys. Following the match, perhaps irritated with a loss on the Besties’ home turf, Anthony Henry took his anger out on his tag partner, to the shock of the crowd and the shock of the Besties still in the ring. Left alone and vulnerable, Drake was defensive when the Besties first approached. Vega reached out for a handshake, and didn’t mean any harm. “You’re cool with us man,” Mat Fitchett reassured Drake. “That guy (Anthony Henry) is an asshole.” Henry, with his actions, has seemingly ended the Workhorsemen, who were plying their trade all over the globe. Without Drake by his side, one wonders if Henry will be able to reach the heights the team once did.
Gateway Heritage Championship: “ The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt def. Mikey Mikey, aware that Jeremy Wyatt is in his true element in these “pure wrestling rules” title defenses, attempted a strategy of catching Wyatt off guard before he could even prepare for the match. Mikey took the fight out into the people, throwing himself at Wyatt and the crowd around the ring as well. Wyatt looked legitimately out of sorts and caught off guard by Mikey’s efforts, until the match got back to the ring. While Mikey is a fun competitor, Wyatt’s prowess on the mat was ultimately too much for him. His critics might say the “pure” rules tilt the tables too far in his favor in his defenses of the Gateway Heritage Championship, but Wyatt prides himself in his technical skills, and one could infer he believes a true Gateway Heritage Champion should be literate on the mat. After his twenty-third successful GHC defense, Jeremy Wyatt addressed the Anarchy faithful. He brought up the Four Pillars of St. Louis Wrestling: Davey Vega, Mat Fitchett, Gary Jay and Warhorse, and the credit many give them for building the St. Louis wrestling scene as it exists today. He then mentioned Nick Gage, a man who “comes in here with a different company’s shirt on”, who’s beaten Gary Jay and Warhorse at Anarchy this year. Wyatt made a salient point about the “Anarchy faithful” gleefully cheering for a man representing a different wrestling promotion beating the crap out of some of the Four Pillars that the same crowd worships as local wrestling gods. Next Anarchy show, Nick Gage makes his return to challenge Jeremy Wyatt for the Gateway Heritage Championship. Wyatt addressed this upcoming match with Gage, and how he usually defends his titles under the “pure” rules and how some think he’s chickening out by only defending the title under those stipulations. Wyatt proclaimed that since Nick Gage is too dumb for those rules and would just get disqualified in a matter of minutes, that he would be waiving the rules. Wyatt vs. Gage, anything goes, for the GHC strap. See you next time at Spaulding Hall.

How to Find Christmas Cheer Amongst All the Grinchiness By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
I’m going to be blunt with you dear readers, if your year was like mine, it’s been pretty damn rough. People have been unnecessarily cruel, you’ve lost relationships you’ve valued, had at least four existential crises, and gained ten pounds. So, why on earth would you enjoy a time like Christmas? How could one possibly find a way to enjoy another reminder of how it is to be lonely, single, and not even have the enjoyment of still believing in Santa Claus? Even the Hallmark Romantic Comedies, all with the same plot, have lost their sobad-it’s-good enjoyment over the years. Add in the fact that global climate change is destroying the planet along with the thought of your family fighting about politics over Christmas dinner, and you can

How to Survive a Fake News Apocalypse By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
In the society of today’s world, we as human beings have so many sources from which to get our news. It may be from local news channels on television, newspapers, social media, as well as multiple internet sites. Well, how do we know if this is real news? At times, it is probably hard to tell if you are receiving the “real deal” of news. Especially if you are easily influenced, confused, or just do not consider taking the time out to do your research. Fake news is misinformation, false information, persuasive and emotional. The majority of the time, it is to try to get people to absorb and spread potentially false information– originators are trying to get an emotional response. Undoubtedly, if it upsets you or causes you to become emotional, of course, you will tell someone and that individual will tell another person. The news is now being spread around all because one person was emotionally affected by it.

Older generations usually get their news from television and newspapers, while younger people are more likely to get their news from social media. Primarily, when choosing your news, you have to watch out for reports that rely on anonymous resources. “It is perfectly fine to get your news from social media, but you have to research the source,” said Laura Wiedlocher, a professor at Blackburn College, who also spoke at the event at Hayner. Nowadays, younger people are more likely to get news from social media. You can protect yourself from fake news by reading beyond the headline. 9 cases reported by the Illinois Department of Public Health. One of the reasons this is lower is that we have laws saying that (except for religious exemptions) you can’t send your kid to a childcare facility without the TDaP, polio, measles and the hepatitis B vaccine. Other states like Missouri, which had 10 cases according to the Kansas City Star, one case being in Jefferson County, has much looser exemption laws, with a law being introduced prohibiting “discrimination” against unvaccinated children. The bill (HB711) says “No child shall be discriminated against because he or she has not been immunized as required due to an exemption under this subsection.” This whole situation is an outright mess, with some people arguing that this is a slippery slope leading to the government telling you what to put in your children. This is a public health emergency that needs to be solved ASAP. The CDC is trying to crack down on this quackery going on, but it comes down to you, to stop the spread of misinformation. There needs to be education on how vaccines work and maybe incentive to vaccinate the kids like subsidized insurance rates or stricter education laws. Fighting Against the Schools By Kyleigh Hallows Contributor
I feel that Illinois schools today shouldn’t force kids to finish high school if they don’t have a want or need for it. If a student would rather begin working at a young age in a workplace that doesn’t require a high school diploma, they shouldn’t be forced to go through 12 years of school. If a student receives a consistent job their junior year and would like to opt-out of senior year, I feel they should be able to do so. Being able to work a full-time job at age 16 may be able to help students toward their goals in their adult life early, rather than wasting four years of time, money, and most likely little effort, in high school if they don’t plan to go to college, or further their education any after high school. Even if a student wants to go through life working at an everyday, average McDonalds, fastfood job, that’s their choice. Why should we make all students work

How Studying Over Holiday Break Helps You Start Your Second Semester
student life
By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Unquestionably, during the holiday season some students attend college locally, so they probably do not have to travel far to visit family. On the other hand, students may just be attending college with no relatives residing nearby campus because their hometown is faraway. Majority of the time, this is the time of year students tend to travel back home to visit relatives. But within the timeframe of their holiday break, most students do not continue their educational studies.
time of your break will help keep your memory in an educational state of mind. When you return to lyceum, your mind will be ready for the lessons you are going to learn in class. Equally important, it is probably even more difficult when Christmas break approaches, in regards to it being quite a lengthy break. During that time, it is still best to make time for studying and reading materials that will help you succeed throughout the upcoming semester.
This can be the most exciting time of the year– family members all coming together to enjoy one another’s company. Some relatives literally have not seen their family members all year long. They use this time during the holidays to visit and spend time with one another. But as a student with all of the fun and festivities going about, you should make quality time for studying. Undoubtedly, you will still be able to spend time with relatives and enjoy your holiday break. Whether it is Thanksgiving, Christmas, and/or New Year’s holiday, it is best to keep up with your studies. Even reading throughout the
Above all, we are on a break from classes. Our mind is not on a break from learning new things. Nurturing our minds with knowledge, while keeping up with our studies is the most marvelous thing to do as a student.

I absolutely love keeping a good book with me to read while riding and relaxing on the train ride on my way to visit family or if I am riding with my Grandpa. It actually seems as if the time of traveling distance goes by much faster. Reading a book while traveling helps the ride to not be so soporific.

Concert On – Phones Away By Bradley Barker Contributor
Attending a live concert is something memorable. Feeling the beat pounding beneath your feet, the light show and the roar of the crowd when a hit song is performed is all a part of living in the concert experience. What’s the best way to get the most out of your concert experience? It’s simple: put your phone away.
that all fans had to lock their phones away in Yondr pouches while in the venue. The band Tool also enforces a heavy no cell phone policy at their live shows. Before their Cleveland performance on Nov. 6, fans received emails stating, “We respectfully request that you please watch and listen to the show, not your phone. You will be ejected from the show without the opportunity to return and without a refund if you violate this simple request and elect to take photos during the performance. In the event of a personal emergency, phone use may occur on the concourse away from the performance area.”
Get this, you paid for the ticket and the annoying service fees, drove all the way to the venue and waited in line just to stand there and record an hour-long Snapchat story that sounds muffled and no one is going to sit through and watch anyways. Some artists have placed a cell phone ban while at their shows, including Jack White. While prepping for his North American tour in support of his album, Boarding House Reach, White was interviewed by Toronto Star. “We think you’ll enjoy looking up from your gadgets for a little while and experience music and our shared love of it IN PERSON,” said White. It seems that live concerts have become more of a social event of, ‘look where I’m at!’ rather than an opportunity to soak in and enjoy your favorite artist’s performance. You don’t go to a showing at the movie theater and record the whole movie or record seminars at church, so why not try the same for a concert and expe rience it with your own two, unfiltered eyes.
