his year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. event has proved to be sanguine. Welcoming remarks by Associate Professor of Speech Mumba Mumba had the entire audience’s attention, and everyone clapped with joy throughout the event. The audience also enjoyed the music. The Lewis and Clark Community College Gospel Choir, directed by Music Instructor Brenda Lancaster, performed “Down by the Riverside” to kick things off. They also performed “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around,” during the event. “The MLK event was impressive and educational for our students,” Mumba said. “Every activity came together because of the commitment of the students and visitors we invited. This event couldn’t have been successful without the input of Jared Hennings, Tandra Taylor, Brenda Lancaster and Mario Love. Their advice and guidance made the event a success.” Lewis and Clark students Marienke Moyegan and Ayinde Bennett read from King’s well-known 1957 speech “Give Us the Ballot.” He gave the speech about the voting rights of African Americans at the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom, which was a rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. “Seeing my fellow students up there really showed me the love and
compassion they had for the event. It really was an inspiration,” said L&C student David Crull. L&C student Charlotte Jackson and Crull read from Ella Baker’s speech “Bigger than a Hamburger.” In the 1960 speech, Baker said student activists at that time were more than just causing controversy for the sake of the student luncheonette. “It was an honor to read the trailblazing of Ms. Ella Baker’s speech,” said Jackson. Keynote speaker Cindy N. Reed, who is a local professional speaker, writer, singer and poet, was able to present a meaningful message through multiple voices as she represented the characters in her speech. “People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired physically,” Reed said quoting Rosa Parks. “No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving’ in.” “I thought it was a thoughtful tribute to Dr. King,” said Anthony Brown, a student here at LC. L&C student Deshon Womack read a speech by Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy – “I’ve got the St. Louis Blues.” The Atlanta pastor and civil rights leader gave the speech in 1963 at the Washington Tabernacle Baptist Church in St. Louis with the Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth and King. “I have much gratitude to be a part of the MLK celebration,” Womack said. “Spreading the
words and knowledge of my ancestors is always an honor. BLM!” Tahje West and Martez Trezvant read from the speech “Eulogy for the Martyred Children,” which was given in memory of four of the young females (Cynthia Diane Wesley, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, and Carol Denise McNair), who were all victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. “I thought it was amazing,” said Administrative Athletics Assistant Dionne McElroy. “I came to the MLK event last year to support students. But this year, I came to support Martez Trezvant. Overall, I really enjoyed this year’s event and will return next year,” “Change to Passage” was presented in performances by Paul H. Pitts Production, a new musical group from St. Louis, Missouri. There was also a memorial wall for everyone in attendance to view before and after the MLK event. It contained images and info about to the two African American sanitation workers who died in a garbage compactor, on Thursday, Feb. 1, 1968, in Memphis. Their deaths caused the sanitation workers to strike. “Rock and Roll Ensemble,” a song directed by Lancaster, was performed as a closing tribute, and Students Activities Coordinator Jared Hennings wrapped up the event with closing words.

Board of Trustees Hires Pauly Group to Search for New President of Lewis and Clark By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
President of the Pauly Group Angela Provart met with the Board of Trustees (BOT) in a closed session during the BOT meeting on Jan 14, 2020. Other than meeting with the BOT, Provart also met with faculty, staff and other bodies of L&C in her process of looking for a new president, giving people the opportunity to voice their thoughts, concerns, and hopes for our future president. Provart also met with the Student Government Association (SGA) to hear the input from the students. President of the Veterans Club and SGA Secretary Hannah Hook had this to say when asked what she would like to see in the next president. “There are three main things I would really like to see,” Hook said. “I look for someone who will continue to grow this college. Right now we have

programs and groups on college for everyone, and I would love to see that keep going. Finally, I would really love to see this college stay cost-friendly to the students. After meeting with Angela, I am very confident that this search firm will find us a great new leader.” Student Trustee April Tulgetske attended both meetings with the SGA and the BOT closed session to discuss and convey thoughts with Provart. “After meeting Angela, I feel reassured that she will assist
the selection committee with finding a president that suits L&C perfectly,” Tulgetske said. “She’s met with various groups on campus and has addressed questions. She has done an amazing job of explaining the process, as well as guiding those who are participating in the selection. She has also acknowledged how difficult and painful this process is, but how therapeutic it can be, as well.” Tulgetske said the previous president, Dale Chapman, left big shoes to fill. “Dr. Chapman’s influence will be felt on campus for generations,” she said. “But, I do believe there is a person out there that can take L&C in the direction that encourages growth and success. Replacing him is impossible. Continuing his vision for L&C is what we all hope for, and I believe the selection committee will do a great job at fulfilling that task.”

Come Discover the Delights at L&C! By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Lewis and Clark Community College’s annual Discover Day will be held Feb. 17, 2020, in the Commons of the Math and Science building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for L&C students and the general public alike. Discover Day is an event held once every semester during Columbus Day and President’s Day for
specifically the local high school students who have the day off from regular school scheduling in order to come to L&C and see the various groups and benefits offered by L&C. The event is held within the hope that the teenagers may become prospective L&C students themselves,
and be more informed on what the campus may offer one’s future. There are many groups in regular attendance, such as clubs and informants on behalf of L&C, to get proper financial aid or scholarship opportunities. The groups are usually set up with their own specific stations throughout the room
for people to walk up to and visit. A few examples of annual groups in attendance include Trailblazer Commons, Financial Aid, The Bridge, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Student Government Association, LC Pride and Active Minds. The event will also most definitely offer games, giveaways,

possibly provide a photo booth, as well as walking tacos that will be provided by the Student Activities group, as is how the event is usually displayed every semester. The event has been known in the past to be very anticipated and well-attended by both L&C students and other Madison
County citizens. The event has been useful in the past on informing teenagers on everything that L&C has to offer from housing at Trailblazer Commons, to the different types of sports and clubs they could join should they choose to one day attend Lewis and Clark Community College for themselves.

SGA Hygiene Project Working to Help Students By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
The Lewis and Clark Community College Student Government Association has started a new project in order to obtain and distribute various common hygiene products to be made available to students for free. The executives set up various large white boxes all over Lewis and Clark Community College’s main campus, paired
with multiple flyers both attached to the box and hanging on boards throughout the buildings. The hygiene drive intends to collect a large supply of the various products in order to distribute them alongside the food held within the snack pantries. This would make the various products available to all of the students using their ID
in the same way they would collect a snack from the pantry. The hygiene products that would be deemed acceptable by the Student Government Association include any menstrual products, condoms, hair products, soap, deodorant, detergent, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and toilet paper, all that are of use before
the product’s expressed expiration date. The products must also be sealed in their original packaging in order to be donated, or else will be disposed of. The drive will be continuous to the end of the semester with plans to renew each semester to come in the future. The boxes around campus are located outside all campus Snack
Pantries, outside of the Bridge Office, outside of Reid Library, outside of Diane McDonough’s office, inside the main doors of the Haskell building, outside of the Enrollment office, on the second floor of the Trimpe building, as well as outside of the Student Services Hub. Madison Vollmer By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Madison Vollmer was born August 15th in Dayton, Ohio. She went to Civic Memorial High School, where she graduated in 2018. Madison’s major, which she studies here at Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C), is Nursing. She is currently attending classes for completion of her degree and her desired job/ career as an R.N. (Registered Nurse). She decided to attend L&C because she wanted to find a career where she can help people. Outside of campus, she participates in professional
wrestling activities. Madison enjoys roller skating, wrestling, and traveling. One of the most interesting things a lot of people do not know about Madison is that she may go to college and work throughout the week, but on the weekends, she wrestles for fun and has been doing it for about four years. Meeting other students who want to pursue the same thing as she does is what she loves the Lewis and Clark student Madison Vollmer. most about being a student here. Madison Vollmer teacher/mentor. Miss has helped Madison looks up to Julie McAfoos is a teacher out a lot throughout McAfoos as a here at L&C, who her English course

Overall, the best thing she likes about L&C is it opens you up to be social with other students, faculty, staff, teachers, professors, etc. They offer help if you are unsure of what courses you want to take, and if you need help finding a career, they are willing to talk to you about options. Madison’s most
memorable moment here on campus is meeting up with old high school friends. In terms of her educational goals, she plans to transfer to SIUE (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) to finish off her nursing degree. As far as long term goals are considered, Madison plans to continue to go to school in hopes of finding a job in her career of choice. “I want to help people and make sure their well being is in good shape. I’m super social, outgoing and enjoy meeting new people,” said Madison Vollmer.

Kavon Lacey By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Kavon Lacey was born and raised in Alton, Illinois, and he is a Pathways Advocate and Assistant Basketball Coach here at Lewis and Clark to(L&C) in Godfrey, ds o-Illinois. He also rdteaches Accelerated e-Studies in Associate s.”Programs (A.S.A.P. seClass) here at L&C, ng which he has taught ul tosince October 2018, veas well as Service sein Leadership with 8)Youthbuild students sitat Scott Bibb Center, :// m/which is another one of L&C’s locations, located in Alton, Illinois. Mr. Lacey became a teacher because he has a passion for knowledge, research and a background in coaching. He has prior experience as a Basketball Coach at the University of Evansville located in Evansville, Indiana. “I believe in spreading knowledge and wealth, and I get a thrill from seeing the light bulb go off in a student, whether it’s in a classroom and/or
sports,” said Kavon Lacey. Initially, he came to teach here at L&C due to his childhood being a neighbor resident of the campus. Living in Alton, Illinois and also attending the Trio Programs as a student of Alton High School, he developed a relationship with L&C. In the midst of moving back near his hometown from Indiana, Mr. Lacey was engaged with multiple locations of employment, being a huge help after college. The best part of his job is the students he works with make it worthwhile, and the majority of the time, their goals are all different. The best part of his program he thinks is the opportunities and career development it provides for students. Also, for students who do not have an idea of his program, he likes to inform them with understanding information. Students should be

interested in taking Mr. Lacey’s classes because their choice of career or studies does not matter; it is open to all career fields that students are currently in. Students can be taking a trade or be in a degree field because it is an experience for all. The more students the merrier. Mr. Lacey describes his teaching methods as interactive. He enjoys pure
discussion inside the classroom focusing on the topic with students. His greatest strength as a teacher, coach and advocate is being very relatable and understanding. The most challenging/ most rewarding part of being a teacher, advocate and coach is understanding that sometimes, students can put in more effort. It’s rewarding when

the teacher can help them do more while getting them to understand, they are valuable and can do better. Mr. Lacey received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in physical therapy in 2011 at the University of Evansville in Indiana. Mr. Lacey also received his master’s degree in public service administration in 2013 at the University of Evansville. His proudest moment of his career so far is attending student graduations for G.E.D students, students on sport teams and four-year degree students, etc. It shows students have completed a step in their education process. His advice for students that are coming into his field is this: “Don’t hold yourself down. Be a sponge, and stay hungry for knowledge.” Kavon Lacey aspired the goals of being head coach of a basketball program
and graduated college because he had no intentions of graduating with his master’s degree. Best of all, Mr. Lacey is striving for himself daily whether it be school work, eating habits and always being able to do better. Overall, he knows he will get better as a person and professional. Throughout his career he feels being in the field of teaching and being around students as well as educators needs more credit because they are overlooked. It is a profession that is very valuable and unique. “I really enjoy teaching,” said Kavon Lacey. L&C Students Call Out Rape Culture By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu

S
tudents at Lewis and Clark Community College recently set out to tell untold stories and present facts in the hopes of busting the myths of rape culture. The “What Were You Wearing?” exhibit was an installation information and outfits people were wearing when they were sexually assaulted. The clothing was put on metal human-shaped frames with mirrors for faces. The exhibit ran from Dec. 9-19 on L&C’s Godfrey Campus with an exhibit opening on Monday, Dec. 9. The purpose of the exhibit was to diminish the false belief that what someone is wearing causes rape, help end rape culutre, and to also stress the importance of consent. “It is unfortunate that we have to have an exhibit like this to bring attention to a myth that is so prevalent and so demeaning to rape survivors. The faculty and students who addressed this issue for us did a great job of grabbing our emotions as well as our minds. Excellent,” said L&C Director of Career and Veteran Services Terry Lane. YouthBuild students also attended the exhibit opening. “I thought it was very well put together and the scene was set perfectly. It was disturbing to read the stories, but very educational. I believe in the word they were trying to spread and hope that eventually we can end rape culture,” said Makkasia Sledge, a YouthBuild student. This exhibit was a project of Business English and Science of Happiness Professor Chrissie Chapman’s English 137 class and Welding Coordinator Travis Jumper’s welding class, in collaboration with other instructors, staff members and students. “This was a powerful exhibit that illustrated that rape is not caused by what the victim/survivor is wearing,” Chapman said. “This question, ‘What were you wearing?’ is often asked of rape victims, and it is a way of blaming and shaming the victim. It is important that we use our words carefully, and the blame and shame of rape falls squarely on the shoulders of those who perpetrate those crimes. We also focused our exhibit on what we can do to stop rape culture, which is a culture where rape and demeaning words and actions to women are normalized.” The exhibit included numerous posters asking men and others to “Don’t just stand by. Stand up,” with different scenarios depicted by students who volunteered for this project. The scenarios ranged from what people should say if a person is harassing someone in the hallway, or using “locker room banter” to demean women, or trying to get a woman drunk at a bar to take advantage of her. “The idea behind this campaign was to give students the words to use to combat rape culture and to take care of one another,” Chapman said. “Another part of this exhibit was the focus on the need for on-going, mutual consent.” Consent is reversible. Someone can change their mind at any time during a sexual encounter. Consenting to kissing does not automatically mean one consents to going any further. The exhibited also noted that when
intoxicated, an individual cannot legally consent to sexual activity. “What impressed me the most was to see all of these students who came to this class and this project with different backgrounds work so well together,” Chapman said. “They utilized their individual strengths, their energy, intelligence and their talents to work together to create something that was better than anything we could have created alone. Watching them blossom this semester was really wonderful for me as a teacher.” The students found the experience rewarding, as well. “What I liked about this was that we got to get to know each other as colleagues working on a project from our different individual perspectives,” English 137 student Paige Lemasson said. “We were able to do school work that was also advocacy work that helped other people. This was a very powerful experience, and I am really proud of the work that we were able to do together as a team.” The students wanted to help educate others about sexual assault and what everyone can do to help prevent it. “It was important to show that this can happen to anyone,” L&C student Charlotte Jackson said. “Anyone can be taken advantage of. Hearing the stories and seeing our own faces in the mirrors really brought this home.” Rape Culture is prevalent in a society when rape is accepted as normal, the experiences of survivors of sexual violence are devauled, and the actions of the perpetrators are supported through individual, social, and institutional channels. Students of Chapman’s class had some advice for the survivors of rape. “Don’t be afraid to speak up, we have a very supportive campus here at Lewis and Clark,” the class said in a statement. “It’s not your fault and if anyone tells you that it is your fault, it isn’t. Call out behavior in your daily life. Especially, when you see it, speak up.” Students had suggestions for continuing the work of the temporary exhibit, like having monthly meetings, support groups to talk with one another, and having a student crisis hotline for texting that’s nationwide. They also thought Lewis and Clark needs safe spaces, more counselors, student liaisons, and more supportive exhibits like this that help marginalized groups. L&C has two Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors: Terri Austin and Renee Bauer. “‘The What Were You Wearing’ exhibit was a very powerful example of the impact of sexual assault,” Transition Counselor Terri Austin said. “It was both a view into the world of survivors as well as a call to action to combat rape culture and sexual violence.” Austin can be reached by phone at 618-468-4157 and her office location is Baldwin 3436. She is also located at the Scott Bibb Center. “Over the years as a counselor at Lewis and Clark, I have seen many students who are rape survivors,” L&C Counselor Rene Bauer said. “My experience has taught me to always believe someone who says he or she has been sexually assaulted… The exhibit was beyond informational and educational. It was daunting and even

YOU Will Never Believe What Happened on YOU Season 2! By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Sometimes, when we get our hearts broken, we feel that it’s time to start over. For some people, this means moving to a new city, getting a new job, and in the case of Joe Goldberg, even a new name. Netflix has returned with another tale from the deadly romantic, picking up not too long after where we left off in the first season. Candace is alive and determined to make Joe pay for all of his crimes, which leads to his immediate run to the one place he despises, Los Angeles. At first, all seems well as he actively tries to deny his impulses to find a new woman to consume his every waking thought, until he finally finds Love. Literally, as the woman he meets is named Love. Slowly but surely, Joe, or “Will” as he goes by in this season, is a sucker for Love and goes back to his usual stalking ways in order

The Grudge is a Metaphorical Mess By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
“The Grudge” (2020) is a film that has issues, originating with the fact that it is trying to be a spinoff of “The Grudge” (2004) while trying to be its own thing. This film is the 13th installment of the 呪怨/Ju-on series, which started with the 2000 Direct-to-video film “Ju-on: The Curse”, but the series became big after the first theatrical installment “Ju-on: The Grudge”. The film is written/ directed by relative newcomer Nicolas Pesce, who directed the 2016 film “The Eyes of My Mother” and the 2018 film “Piercing”. Those films did get average reviews when they were released. The film follows the style of the series, showing three stories in nonlinear order that are set in the house (44 Reyburn Drive) which has a curse brought on by a live-in nurse, who has been inside the house from the original “Grudge”, with a “main” narrative of a police officer investigating the house. That is the only real connection between this film and the other installments. The film, instead of having Kayoko and Toshio, the ghosts/onryō1 from the Ju-on films and the
first three American ones, they decide to play horror trope #307: Creepy Ghost Girl™. Kayoko only appears for 30 seconds in the opening scene while the rest of the film uses the woman who killed her family, herself and her daughter as the spirit. The acting by John Cho and Andrea Risebourogh is fairly good, with Cho playing a real estate agent whose wife is pregnant with a baby that has a high chance for a birth defect and Risebourogh playing the main protagonist, Detective Muldoon. The film does play up the trope factor. For instance, the insane man revealing info about the curse before gouging his eyes out, and the emotionally distant police officer, played by Demián Bichir. The real killer of this movie is the ending, which I am not going to spoil, but when I saw it, I was thinking “Are you kidding me?” with my mouth agape. The film currently has a 16 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is code for “stay away”. “Cats” has 20 percent by the way. I give it 2 out of 5 spooky girls for having decent acting, but terrible execution.

to try to find the opportunity to win her over. As Joe adjusts to life in L.A. he also befriends and works with Love’s brother Forty, keeps a protective eye on his fifteen-year-old neighbor, and has to figure out what to do with the real Will, who is currently locked in Joe’s new and improved glass cage. As Joe struggles to keep up his false identity and successfully winning Love over, the audience is taken on an insanely wild ride through the rest of the second season. If you thought things were insane in season one, you haven’t seen anything yet! This season ends with the ultimate twist ending for the two doomed love birds, and I can’t emphasize enough for anyone who hasn’t binged the show yet, to immediately do so. YOU has been confirmed by Netflix for a third season to premiere in 2021.

4. The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (April 2012-March 2013)
A gay twist on this classic Jane Austen tale was brilliant, romantic and wonderful for modernizing this amazing love story. This adaptation follows Lizzy Bennett, a recent graduate doing her best to enter into the world of publishing as an editor. Through the chance encounter of her sister Jane Bennett falling in love with the handsome Charlie Bingley, Lizzy ends up meeting publisher Darcy Williams. The two do not see eye to eye at first, to say the least. However, as the two continue to cross paths, they’re forced to tolerate one another and eventually more complicated feelings begin to develop. This book is currently available for purchase at www. Amazon.com for $13.

This is a particularly creative retelling of the classic story, being told in the format of an online web series, which is still currently available for free on YouTube. The show is hosted by a modern Lizzie Bennet during the events of the original story as told in the modern age, taking place over the span of nearly an entire year. Much like the web series Carmilla, the show is a “bottle show” meaning the entire time the characters are only on one set to play out their story. I really enjoyed seeing Lizzie’s slow process of falling-in-love in real-time on the internet, being a rather original modern twist on the story. I enjoyed every episode and would recommend it for any Pride and Prejudice fan.
3. Pride and Prejudice (2005) The on-screen chemistry between Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as Lizzy Bennett and Will Darcy was beyond palpable, and truly made this the best movie interpretation of Pride and Prejudice currently in existence. The setting and actors suck everyone in, leaving them sitting on the edge of their seats as they wonder if Will and Lizzy will end up together. Even the actors portraying the minor characters did excellently in their performances. To this day, this is the version of Pride and Prejudice that I move to watch whenever I get in the mood to indulge my love of literary classics without wanting to reread the story. Pride and Prejudice is currently available on STARZ. Cover of The Story of Lizzy and Darcy.

2. Illustrated Classics: Pride and Prejudice As an old animé and manga nerd, the classic Japanese artwork paired with the original Jane Austen story ended up being the perfect combination to make for an exciting trip into the character’s world for me. An admittedly rather thick book becomes significantly easier to breeze through when paired with the creative and surprisingly bright illustrations. While I wish I could provide a more solid source to purchase a copy for yourself, this particular edition is rare to come by. I myself found it in a half-priced book store, and it was more than worth every penny.

As someone with a fascination with the legal world, this particular retelling especially resonated with me. This retelling features Liza Bennett as a single woman who recently graduated with a law degree, who crosses paths with the arrogant attorney Will Darcy. As Liza works to preserve her family’s failing law firm, Will steps in to help and eventually, the two are forced to work together in order to see eye-to-eye. I always found Will and Lizzy from the original Pride and Prejudice to be articulate and bellicose, so to see those traits in the modern legal field was titillating, to say the least. This book is currently available for purchase at www.Amazon.com for 10 dollars.

Nobody Was Expecting This Bombshell of a Movie! By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
2016 was a wild year when we look back on it now, specifically when we think about the 2016 United States presidential election. One of the most memorable parts of the campaign involved a rather popular Fox anchor, Megyn Kelly, when she had a bit of an ugly back-and-forth with Donald Trump. To this day, his tweets scolding Megyn Kelly and her “Bleeding from her … wherever …” have lived on in infamy. However, a lot of people didn’t pay quite as much attention when afterward she, along with over twenty other women, accused Fox President Roger Ailes of sexual misconduct and assault in the workplace. The case had become so complicated that Ailes resigned from his position and later passed away in 2017. Thankfully, Hollywood has made sure that this event will be remembered through the latest film, “Bombshell.” The film stars Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly, Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, Margot Robbie as Kayla Pospisil, and John Lithgow as Roger Ailles. The film was also directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph, who also co-wrote “The Big Short.” The film follows the whole year of the three main female protagonists, giving a chillingly accurate portrayal of how workplace harassment manifests. I personally appreciated how strong the women specifically were shown to be in this movie, even against men that would understandably make anyone close to losing their temper. It was especially interesting in the case of Kayla Pospisil, whose

character was entirely fictional to use as a stand-in for the other women who faced harassment from Ailes. In real life, Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson were as surprised as everyone else when the trailer was released to the public. “I did not sell the rights to my story or book and only got my first look at the film once it was past the point of any possible edits, though there are certainly some I would have made,” said Kelly in a public response she made on Instagram after the trailer and movie poster came out. “Harassment is apolitical. Almost all of us couldn’t participate in movie because of NDAs which muzzle us. After jumping off a cliff by myself 7/6/16 I hope u will support our mission to have every voice heard.” Gretchen Carlson tweeted in response to somebody about whether or not the movie should go on, seeing as Fox News is a conservative network. I can’t emphasize enough, dear readers, to keep an eye out for when this movie becomes available for streaming because it was phenomenal! The writing was very well done, and I specifically enjoyed Charlize Theron’s acting as Megyn Kelly, nearly looking identical to her in the film. I especially loved the writing, and how seriously the subject matter was tackled on such a complex issue. I can’t say enough how much of a BOMBSHELL this movie really is, and I think everyone should watch it the first chance they get!

Man’s Search For Meaning, By Viktor E. Frankl By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
In general, this book is solely based on survival! Victor Frankl was thrown into a Nazi world filled with concentration camps located in Auschwitz. While reading ‘Man’s Search For Meaning,” it had me thinking of how grateful I am to have clean clothes on my back and food on my table. As well as the freedom of going anywhere I choose to go. Mr. Frankl was a doctor but that didn’t mean anything at all once he arrived at the concentration camp he was sent to. It was so sad because when him and other men arrived they had to give up everything in their possession no matter what they had. Whether it was their identification, pen, pencil, wrist watch, and/or wedding band etc. Even though many of them tried their best to hold onto their possessions eventually it didn’t last long. If they were caught it would be taken away by guards. These men were taken away from everything they ever owned as well as loved ones. Once they had given all of their possessions away to the guards. They were sent off to have every piece of hair on their bodies heshaved off. Worst of all, they were stamped with n-numbers on the back of their upper body. The men bleno longer had names and were simply known as the anumber stamped on them. he I just couldn’t even imagine the pain these men had ngto suffer from being away from family and friends. and ar.unable to verify their whereabouts. would wear these clothes until they turned into pieces of cloth. Not to mention the shoes were always likely to be to small for the prisoners, wearing them until their feet busted through the shoes. Unfortunately, these imprisoned men had to work long hours without taking a break until their hands and feet would bleed. If the men did not follow orders presented to them by the prison guards, they were sent to gas chambers to be killed. Even though some men didn’t have to be sent to the gas chambers to die because the lack of food and from being exposed to different illnesses killed them alone. By living in horrible conditions while residing in the prison camps was already killing some men slowly. The prisoners would be lucky to be able to have a crumb of bread and a spoonful of soup for dinner. I think that is harsh and I would have cried my eyes out and go into a deep depression if I had to starve after a long day of work. It was very cold inside the camps and the men would sleep bundled up next to each other just to stay warm. At first, I thought I was about to read a book about a man with just simple advice for people. Just by looking at the cover of the book! But when I opened this book up and started reading it changed my entire thoughts. I had mistakenly judged this book by it’s cover without even knowing. While reading I felt so sorry for the people whom were going through those critical issues while having to be sent away to those prison camps. Overall, I truly think this book is a must read but you have to have a strong mind. This book is not intended for any other than a strong minded individual to read.
A Sci-Fi Tale of Sound: The Album Review of 2112 by Rush By Dillon Neibel
dneibel@lc.edu With the passing of the elite drummer Neil Peart I find it necessary to review my favorite album of the triumphant trio, Rush’s epic 1976 album “2112.” Neil Peart (arguably the greatest drummer of all time) wrote the lyrics to the masterful story/song that is the title track to this album “2112,” while lead guitarist Alex Lifeson and lead bassist, keyboardist and singer Geddy Lee created the music to pair with Peart’s lyrics. And with a runtime of 20 minutes this song is broken up into seven chapters. Chapter one titled “Overture,” is predominantly all an instrumental that foreshadows the story about to be told. One’s ears are filled with sounds that are commonly associated with a spaceship, guitar riffs, bass slides and drum beats galore until the end when the one line chimes in prophetically, “And the meek shall inherit the Earth.” In chapter two “The Temples of Syrinx” we get a painted picture of what the galaxy is like under the Priests control. It is a world were little to no creativity and individuality exists and everything must meet the criteria of the Priests who micromanage all galthrough great computers. at- “We’ve taken care of everything/ The words you etthear, the songs you sing/ The pictures that give pleah asure to your eye/ It’s one for all, and all for one/ We ntwork together, common son/ Never need to wonder vehow or why.” lp In “Discovery” our third chapter, the anonymous h-protagonist finds a strange object by a waterfall that illturns out to be a guitar. ce “What can this strange device be/ When I touch it, seit gives forth a sound/ It’s got wires that vibrate and togive music/ What can this thing be that I Found.” or After discovering the instrument and learning what it can do, the protagonist decides that he will

share it with the Priests and dreams of the good that it can do for the people. Next in chapter four, “Presentation,” the protagonist makes his plea to the Priests and plays his new found music for them. “Listen to my music/ And hear what it can do/ There’s something here that’s as strong as life/ I know that it will reach you.” Ultimately the priests are not impressed and it then becomes a back and forth battle between our protagonist and the Priests who get the final say. In addition, in the accompanying comic booklet we see one of the priests actually smash the guitar, which is

suggested through the music itself but not verbalized in the lyrics. “Oracle: The Dream,” the fifth chapter is when our protagonist wanders home believing it was all a dream, until an oracle shows him a vision of a future in which creativity and individuality flourishes. “I see the hand of man arise/ With hungry mind and open eyes.” In the lyrics of this section we also get a mention of the elder race who is growing their strength to reclaim their home. Then in our sixth chapter, “Soliloquy,” we see our protagonist return to the cave in which he made the discovery. And after much brooding he decides the only way to live in this dream world he sees, he must take his own life, and does so. “My spirits are filled with the depths of despair/ My lifeblood … spills over.” In the seventh and last chapter “The Grand Finale,” we mostly get hard rock ambiguous instrumentals that imply an attack on the oppressive government by another entity. In the end we here a commanding voice repeat “Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation” three times and then “We have assumed control” three more times as the song ends. This Song is a masterpiece of both musical and storytelling proportions to say the VERY LEAST. Yet, so is the entire album. With five other songs on the album its carries on the powerful themes from the title track, specifically the importance of creativity and individuality, all the while continuing with that spacey progressive vibe. I HIGHLY encourage this album to any genuine music or story lover. And, I have to say the songs “Lessons” and “Something for Nothing” are two of my all time favorite Rush songs as well, so please if only to respect the GOAT drummer Neil Peart, listen intently to Rush’s “2112.”

Hedy Lamarr, the Woman Responsible for Our Modern Tech Conveniences By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
In today’s world, people use the internet to communicate globally. But many have never taken the time out to ask, “How did WiFi actually come about, and who invented it?” Or, “How about GPS or Bluetooth for that matter?” The authentic individual behind all this technology has not received the credit she deserves. Despite the fact she is such a phenomenal woman, in her time she was only revered for her beautiful looks, instead of the brains that accompanied her beauty! Hedy Lamarr was a Vienna-born actress who was named at the time of her birth, Hedwig Kiesler of Austria. Fritz Mandl,
who was one of the richest men in Austria, proposed to Lamarr, and she eventually accepted the proposal. Mandl was an ammunition manufacturer, who was associated with Hitler and Mussolini. While they were married, he would take her to Nazi conferences. She was interested in conferences because she liked building things. Eventually, Lamarr ended up fleeing the marriage and Nazi Germany and landed a deal with MGM for $3,000 a week. At the age of just 22 years old, she went to London. That’s where Louis B. Mayer offered her a new last name and a 22-year contract with MGM, which she gladly accepted! In fact, it turned out to be well

Harriet Tubman was a Shero By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
According to the article “Harriet Tubman,” written by Diane Sawinski. Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 to plantation slaves Benjamin Ross and Harriet Green, in which she was one of eleven children in Dorchester, Maryland located in the United States. She died March 10, 1913 in Auburn, New York which is also located in the United States. Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who had escaped from slavery in 1849. She had made nineteen trips to the South to rescue nearly hundreds of slaves. Harriet was considered the property of the plantation owner Edward Brodas. Unfortunately, Brodas had named her Araminta Ross when she was born and her mother nicknamed her “Minty.” Harriet was known as an American Abolitionist to everyone all over the world. When Harriet was just a baby girl, her babysitters would be elderly women who were slaves. They would babysit her while her mother worked in the fields. Unfortunately, when Harriet was just six years old, she had to go elsewhere on a different plantation that belonged to the Cook’s who were a white couple to work. Due to the fact after working for one year she ended up having the measles and was sent back to the Brodas plantation. Eventually, after Harriet was no longer ill; it was time for her to be sent back out to work again. But this time she was leaving with a lady named Miss Susan. This time the duties of her job would
be to take care of Miss Susan’s baby and clean her home. If she ended up making any mistake while working for her, Miss Susan would beat her with a whip. Sadly, to say one day Harriet had stolen from a sugar bowl and was caught right in the middle of stealing. But instead of her staying around to be whipped, she took off running and hid. Afterwhile, from her being beaten so many times with a whip and suffering from starvation as well as lack of sleep. Once again she was sent back to the Brodas plantation to work. Since it was so hard for her to be trained as a house slave. She was sent to work in the fields, her duties would consist of carrying heavy loads and chopping wood. During her teenage years, she was sent off by her master to work on the neighbors’ fields. But one day when the slaves were working in the fields she witnessed a slave running away. As well as, watch the overseer chasing the slave. Harriet Tubman tried to get the slave’s attention to notify him/her the overseer was chasing. Instead, the overseer hit Harriet upside the head with a weight of a two-pound iron. She ended up having a scar on her forehead from being hit by the weight. Throughout the rest of Harriet’s life from being hit so hard, she suffered from seizures and they would cause her to fall asleep for short periods of time. She recovered from being hit in the head and she was sent to work back in the Brodas fields. This time around when

Harriet worked for Brodas she made a decision to “hire her time.” Which meant Harriet had to pay Brodas $75.00 a year and was able to keep the rest of the money she made by working for other people. I could not even imagine the pain and sorrow Harriet felt and went through knowing she would have to pay someone just to be able to keep the money she had worked so hard for to earn. Harriet Tubman met the love of her life in 1844 when she had met John Tubman who was a free black man. She ended up moving into John’s cabin but she was not grateful neither or satisfied by moving in with him. At times, she would always have thoughts of being free and wanted to runaway up North
to become a free slave. In 1849, Brodas died and Harriet became fearful she would be sold to pick cotton and decided this was the best time for her to escape North. After his death, she was scared that she would be sold off to pick cotton. Due to the fact, Harriet did not want to be sold off she decided to go on the run to the North to gain freedom. Even though she knew nothing about the “underground railroad,” she had heard lots about it. Since she was a runaway slave, Harriet traveled by night time while using the North Star to help lead her to her destination. Eventually, while traveling she stopped in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where lots of AfricanAmericans were freed from slavery. She
worth the offer, giving her the chance of becoming a Hollywood star. Lamarr was trained to be an actress, but she lacked the ability of technical expertise to be able to put her inventive ideas into practice. Lots of individuals always looked at Lamarr as just a pretty face. But she had way more to offer than just beauty; she was a very intelligent woman. Lamar eventually teamed up with George Antheil, and together they focused on making a better torpedo guidance system. The Philco 1939 “Mystery Control” radio was an inspiration to them. Radio control was futuristic at that time, but not really a new, patentable idea.

Tech History
Hedy coined the term “hopping of frequencies.” Doing so made the torpedos much less susceptible to jamming. Their discoveries led to the invention of WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, fleet tracking, RFID tags, drones, bar-code readers and much more. Finally, Lamarr died in 2000. After her death, she was very well known in the National Inventors Hall for all of her inventions she had thought up throughout R her life. In 2018, “Bombshell,”of a documentary, was re-wi leased. Alton Square Mall Slated to Receive Movie Theater By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
Neighborhood Cinema Group (NCG) Theaters is going to put an eight-screen movie theater in the Alton Square Mall, expecting to be opening in the summer. The theater was announced in a press conference on Jan. 16. The theater is going into the area formerly occupied by Sears, which closed in 2012, and Illinois Wholesale Furniture, who moved out in 2016. Word of a movie theater being put into the mall has been spread around in the past. Alton Mayor Brett Walker elaborated saying, “Various city administrations have sought to advance this project through the years, and we are very excited to bring the project to fruition.”
This will be the first movie theater to be in Alton since Wehrenberg (now owned by Marcus Theaters) closed the two-screen Alton Cine in 1998. This will also be the first traditional movie theater in Madison County not to be operated by AMC. NCG has 25 owned theaters in the Midwest, being operated out of Owosso, Michigan. The theater does operate one theater in Illinois, being in the Chicago suburb of Yorkville. The chain has average prices ($9 for most screenings, $7 for matinees). The Alton location will have “luxury screenings” and the theaters will have reclining seats. Hull’s Rob Johnson, who is in charge of
construction, confirmed there will be “four small screens and four big screens.” He also said there will be a seven month time frame to build and three more weeks for NCG to furnish the building (projectors, seats, concessions, etc.). The theater is the latest addition by the mall’s owner, The Hull Group, who bought the property in 2015. In 2019, they put in a Slackers CDs and Games, replaced the carpet and lighting, and announced a 12,000-foot rehab center ran by OSF Healthcare. Jim Hull concluded by saying, “We love Alton. We’re so excited for the future, and having this NCG Cinema here — this state of the art, (luxurious) theater.”

Australia Seeking Out Donations for Fire Victims By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Recently the country of Australia was plagued with rampant bush wildfires, causing massive levels of destruction and chaos for both the citizens and the animals alike. For months, beginning in Sept. 2019, the country had been in crisis before the rest of the world had even been aware of how much damage had already been done. Specifically, 31 people had lost their lives, roughly 27 million acres had been burned up, and about 1.25 billion animals had perished. Even now, there are still fires burning in Australia, although there has been a significant increase in assistance from other countries since the issue
became more globally publicized. The entire ordeal has been particularly difficult for the Australians who lost their livelihood, as well as their distaste of their Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. Morrison had been reported to have taken a vacation in Hawaii during Dec. 2019, while the fires were raging on violently across the nation. When Morrison had returned in hopes of speaking publically to reassure his citizens, he had been met with strong distaste. “You won’t be getting any votes down here buddy,” shouted an unidentified man from Corgbago in a video of citizens and firefighters

refusing to shake Morrison’s hand. Another young woman in the video, who has since been identified as a young woman named Zoey, also told Morrison, “I am only shaking your hand if you give more funding to the RFS. So many people have lost their homes. We need more help.” It is not only the citizens that had been in peril but the many animals as well, especially the Koalas. Koalas are slow-moving animals, putting them at a severe disadvantage in hopes of survival against the wildfires. The overall population of koalas has decreased dramatically by 30 percent as a result
of the destruction, although many hospitals and animal preservation areas are working their hardest in order to help. There are many options for people all over the world who are not presently a firefighter in Australia to still help those who have lost their homes. A few charities that may be contacted for donation include the World Wildlife Fund which can be reached at donate.wwf.org.au, the Australian Red Cross which can be reached at www.redcross.org. au, Givit which can be reached at www.givit. org.au and NSW Rural Fire Service, which can be reached at www.rfs. nsw.gov.au.

Reimagining Places of the Past: Historic Preservation Lecture Series, Part 1 By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
One of the first questions many historical home owners ask is, has someone ever died in the home they have purchased and/or did that deceased person have their funeral at the home as well. Have you ever wanted to know the history behind your historical home? Such as the Social History of the house and what type of people resided in the home before you, like wanting to know whether they were rich or poor and how long they lived in the home? There is no wrong way to conduct your research and you can learn to do it on your own. You can go to city directories and write down information before going to the courthouse and performing the property search. Property transactions may come with a different name. Abstracts of buildings, known as gold mines of information, which we will dive further into. Information such as, whether or not the home burnt down and a new one was built in its place. Who all resided in this home? Never trust someone else’s research, because you never know how accurate it can be.
Check the newspapers for articles about the address as well as family members of past residents. Remember if you’re able to find out information about old neighbors of the historical home, by all means, feel free to contact them and while they are telling their story of the home, write it down. Finally, once you are finished consider making it public and remember to always do your own research. The Madison County Historical Society opens its doors to Madison County history and is preserving the past and inspiring the Future. Certainly, there’s so many facts behind historical homes in the Madison County which provides valuable information to you as the homeowner or soon to be homeowner. But you have to be willing to take the time to do your research. Mary Pendergrass, a homeowner in Alton, Illinois, said the records are very helpful for anyone doing historical research on their home. You will also be able to find out exactly who all lived in the home, how long, and what kind of individuals they were.
At the Madison County Archival Library (MCHS) 800 N. Main Street, Edwardsville, Illinois, you will be able to find atlases of Madison County from 1873, 1892, and 1906. You may find history, portraits, and sketches of historical homes, city and town histories which every community in the town has, list of citizens, city directories. Always remember to consider some but not all the items which are at the Madison County Archival Library are also in the individual city libraries. Unfortunately, individual libraries (except for Hayner Library) tend to not have resources from other towns. Construction dates on assessment records for older homes are seldom correct. Keep in mind while researching this topic records for construction anytime before 1960 are not trustworthy information. Always remember to search for the address and names of early owners using quotation marks as well as variations of the name and address, including abbreviated versions and incorrect spelled versions, i.e. “710 N. Buchanan,“ “710

Located at the Madison County Courthouse and Administration Building you may ask for history cards. Every property is different. “It’s exciting to see so many people interested in doing this type of work,” said Cindy Reinhardt who has published stories of more than 200 homes in Edwardsville. She also serves on the board of the Friends of Leclaire, the Madison County Historical Society, and the Illinois State Historical Society. From 20042018 Reinhardt served on the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission. She also mentioned there is currently a volunteer by the name of Charlotte Johnson looking to see if there has been any street changes located in Alton, Illinois. Johnson will be writing a series on the Underground Railroad.

Kobe Bryant Dead At 41: The Legacy He Leaves By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
Basketball and sports icon Kobe Bryant died on Sunday, January 26, when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed near Calabasas, California around midday. His daughter, the 14-year old Gianna Bryant, also passed away in the accident. According to the Los Angeles Times, Kobe and Gianna Bryant were on their way to Gianna’s select basketball game. Seven others perished in the crash with them, including Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri, and one of their two daughters, Alyssa, were also onboard when the helicopter went down. Bryant was a center of NBA attention just the night before. His former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, were playing in primetime in his hometown of Philadelphia. During the game, another basketball legend, LeBron James, passed Bryant for third place in the NBA’s all-time scorer’s rankings. James wrote “Mamba 4 Life 8/24 (Bryant’s two numbers) KB in Sharpie on his shoes to mark the occasion. Kobe Bryant even tweeted at LeBron Saturday during the game to congratulate him on becoming #3 on the NBA all-time scoring list. The tweet, that reads “Continuing to move the game forward @ KingJames Much respect my brother #33644 serves as Bryant’s final message to not only James, but the basketball world as

Gasol was a former teammate of Bryant with the Lakers from 2008 to 2014. Gasol and Bryant won back-to-back NBA titles as teammates, in 2009 and 2010. Bryant leaves behind varying legacies. One is that of a legend of the sport of basketball, a man who brought the Los Angeles Lakers back to the forefront of the NBA and the basketball world. Bryant’s career on the court has been garnished with accolades, from the very moment he joined the Lakers. Current NBA commissioner Adam Silver called Kobe Bryant “one of the greatest players in the history of our game in a New York Times article published when Bryant retired from the sport. In that same article, NYT sports columnist Andrew Keh wrote that Bryant “had one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport. Bryant was and still is an inspiration for basketball players, young and old. Writing this I can vividly remember sitting on the couch in my dad’s living room, watching as Kobe put up 61 points on the New York Knicks in 2009, one of the sport’s most iconic moments of that decade. The darker legacy he leaves behind is that of an accused rapist, stemming from the 2003 arrest of Bryant after a 19-year old hotel employee in Eagle, Colorado filed a sexual assault complaint against him. Bryant was

The Arch in St. Louis is known as the “Gateway to the West, in honor of St. Louis’s part in the westward expansion of the United States. A few miles north of St. Louis, Spaulding Hall in Alton, Illinois serves as the Gateway To Anarchy. The wrestling event of the same name on January 10 marks Saint Louis Anarchy’s first show of the new decade and year. The once near-monthly Anarchy is becoming a monthly fixture in 2020, and the events of Friday’s Gateway to Anarchy show will likely set the table for the year in Anarchy to come. Gateway Heritage Championship Match: (c) “The Monarch Jeremy Wyatt vs. Nick Gage The Gateway Heritage Champion for 458 days as of this writing, “The Monarch Jeremy Wyatt has ruled Saint Louis Anarchy and every promotion in which he has defended his Gateway Heritage Championship in. In twenty-five defenses of the GHC belt, Wyatt has gone an improbable 24-0-1, the one blemish coming recently, in an arduous one hour time limit draw with Gary Jay in December at Journey Pro Wrestling in Kansas City. Wyatt, a mat-based wrestler who’s in his true element when he can
slow things down in the ring and keep less technically sound wrestlers guessing, usually defends the Gateway Heritage Championship under the stipulation of “pure wrestling rules. Those rules state that each combatant has three rope breaks to escape submissions or pin attempts, and that using a rope break or breaking a rule (such as using a closed fist or weapon) costs you a rope break. This stipulation has come into play in several title matches and is partially a reason Wyatt is still the champion. However, for this encounter with Nick Gage, Wyatt waived the rules, claiming the Gage is “too stupid for the rules, and would just disqualify himself. Calling Gage stupid is a bold move, to say the least. Nick Gage is, in this humble writer’s opinion, the fiercest and most dangerous competitor wrestling today. He piledrove Warhorse through a flaming skull! He bashed Gary Jay across the face with a fluorescent light tube! He’s done much more to many other wrestlers and essentially left a pile of beaten and bloody wrestlers in his wake since his return to pro wrestling. Whenever Nick Gage enters a room to fight, the energy changes, it’s something you can feel as soon as his Metallica entrance music hits. Gage
in Eagle to undergo knee surgery. The hotel employee at the Spa and Lodge at Cordillera in Eagle County claimed that Bryant raped her in his hotel room prior to his knee surgery at a nearby facility the next day. Although the initial assault case was dropped after the victim refused to testify at a trial, Bryant agreed to apologize to his victim. In a public apology statement, Bryant wrote: “Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter. The victim filed a civil suit against Bryant following the assault case being dropped, where she and Bryant settled out of court. The case had an immediate and lasting impact on Bryant’s legacy, both on and off the basketball court. Some in the sports world had little to say of Bryant’s passing, in part due to the divisive nature of that sexual assault case. Many of Bryant’s most ardent fans believe the case was a fabrication to ruin their favorite legend’s good name or a cash grab by the victim, which, when Bryant’s own apology is taken into consideration, feels like wishful thinking on their behalf. Madu was one of the few voices in sports media speaking about this incident when remembering Kobe Bryant. More specifically, Madu was critical of fellow sports media figures “gliding past Bryant’s offense. He posted a thoughtful thread on Twitter where he said the following: “So many people, including the media, helped him rehabilitate after the case without ever reckoning with what he did. Because great athletes are heroes and we need them to be flattened as good. The entire “Black Mamba idea was transforming that case into a positive. “What happened was what always happens, a powerful man was accused and people shamed the accuser and then went past the issue as quickly as possible. It’s not unfair that some are still bitter about that and what it says about our world and how we value women. Like many stars and celebrities of the modern generation, Kobe Bryant leaves behind a legacy of superstardom and greatness that was marred by his own actions. Those who he inspired to play the game of basketball, or those who simply watched on in awe, will remember the heights he reached on the court. But those who’ve known or been victims of sexual assault will see Bryant as another powerful figure who never truly saw justice for his wrongdoing.

recently lost his GCW crown, per se, losing the GCW World title to AJ Gray (who then lost it to Rickey Shane Page) last month. Gage will be hungry to snatch the Gateway Heritage Championship and put some gold back around his waist. Warhorse vs. Fred Yehi Once just a Viking named Jake, in 2019 Warhorse evolved to a full-fledged Ruler of Ass, headbanging his way across independent wrestling and claiming the Independent Wrestling TV Title in the process. He’ll kick and stomp a hole through anyone and headbang in the ring afterward. One of the four pillars of St. Louis Wrestling, Warhorse is a beloved figure in Anarchy and frankly, anywhere he pops up for a match. Which, as of last weekend, includes a record store without a wrestling ring in North Dakota. When I saw the Saint Louis Anarchy Twitter account tweet that Fred Yehi was going to be a big part of the Anarchy roster in 2020, I was immediately giddy with excitement. I first heard of Yehi a handful of years ago when a friend showed me a backyard wrestling match Fred Yehi had ages ago in front of dozens of kids in lawn chairs. A young Yehi was doing moves I’d

only seldom seen in any wrestling ring, let alone someone’s backyard. Fred Yehi is a unique talent, not many in the world of wrestling possess his combination of technical skill and physical prowess. Yehi matches up well with anyone of any size, with a number of matches in EVOLVE against current and former WWE or Impact Wrestling stars, including WALTER, TJ Perkins, Jordynne Grace, and Brian Cage. He unsuccessfully challenged Jeremy Wyatt for the Gateway Heritage Championship in Journey Pro in August 2019, but will be gunning for that title in 2020.
The Besties In The World vs. Larry D & “Big Beef Gnarls Garvin To dust off an old chestnut here, Anarchy wouldn’t be Anarchy without the Besties. They are half of the Four Pillars of St. Louis Wrestling and truly the heart of wrestling in the St. Louis area and beyond. The Besties are beloved worldwide, and by the nature of the wrestling business, they have put a target on their backs wherever they go. They’re champions in multiple time zones, and many believe they’re the best tag team in independent wrestling.
Aiming at the target on the back of the Besties will be Larry D and “Big Beef Gnarls Garvin. Garvin will be eager to make an impression with the Anarchy faithful and those watching at home on Independent Wrestling TV, tweeting that he was excited to have this match against what he called the best tag team in America today. Larry D has made his impression already, primarily with his fists, which the Besties will want to avoid if they want to leave Spaulding Hall victorious. Story Continued on 3B ANARCHY PREVIEW

New Decade, Same Old Anarchy: A Gateway To Anarchy R By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
The St. Louis area’s wrestling faithful descended upon Spaulding Hall in Alton on Friday, January 10 for Saint Louis Anarchy’s first show of the new year, Gateway To Anarchy. Spaulding Hall, a Knights of Columbus hall just up the hill from Alton’s main drag, is the home of Anarchy, and the spiritual home of the modern era of St. Louis wrestling. Friday night, Spaulding Hall was jampacked, with hundreds of fervent fans gathering for a big night featuring all sorts of stars from the independent wrestling scene. Pre-show festivities Per usual, the night was kicked off by a few surprise pre-show matches. Levi Everett, a humble Amish man who “travels by way of horse and buggy” fought Victor Avalon, who made a mockery of Everett’s butter churn, and became a villain in the eyes of the crowd filing in Spaulding Hall. Everett did not take Avalon breaking his churn lightly, and dispatched of Everett in quick fashion. In the second match, Anarchy fans were introduced to two more members of IFHY, Shawn Kemp and Johnathan Wolf, who squared off with the Diamond Dogs, Graham Bell and Luke Langley. A few months ago Bell reached an achievement many pro wrestlers dream of, wrestling in Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, but might be more known to some as the Diamond Dog with the really big cannon. This was a quick but fun match, with the IFHY team of Kemp and Wolf coming out victorious. In the return of what I’ve dubbed the “Everett Connors Variety Hour”, Connors and Raul the Bear came out to the ring to entertain fans while people found their seats and got food and drinks prior to the start of the
main show. Connors asked the crowd for names of wrestlers/people around Saint Louis Anarchy so he could do impressions of them. While I’m not an expert on impressions or impersonations, Connors seemed to just about nail each one. The Kenway def. Cole Radrick The first match of the main card saw the third member of IFHY step into the ring in “Lionheart” Cole Radrick. He squared off with The Kenway, who was sporting a new jacket but the same disdain for those who don’t recognize his talent. Kenway is a very talented jerk, and his skill in the ring can make you forget his disposition. Radrick’s left knee was hurt in the match, and Kenway attacked it with precision until the end. Radrick was forced to tap to the figure four leg lock, stretching the hurt knee till it couldn’t be stretched anymore.
Seishin and Alfonso while they were posing for the crowd to start the match. They probably shouldn’t have angered “The Little Blue Dragon” Seishin, who, once tagged into the contest, was literally breathing fire. Her energy and specifically, her kicks spelled doom for Perry and Cash. Seishin clocked Deacon Cash with a big running knee and pinned him for the finish. Thomas Shire def. Aaron Williams A few Anarchy events ago, Shire was getting mixed to negative reactions from the hundreds in attendance. That’s seemingly all changed, and Shire received a hero’s welcome at Spaulding Hall on Friday night. Williams and Shire are a well-matched pair in the ring, and their years of combined wrestling experience was really on display.
Shire possessed the size advantage, but Williams’ striking power leveled Seishin & Kenny the playing field. Shire Alfonso def. Ace Perry caught WIlliams in the & Deacon Cash UFO (where a wrestler Perry and Cash (who lifts another wrestler on came to the ring hold- their shoulders, spins ing a money gun, not around a bunch, and sure if the money in it dumps the wrestler back was real) drew the ire of on the ground) which the Anarchy faithful by might have been the end attacking fan favorites of another match, but
couldn’t capitalize and pin Williams after it. Shire pinned Williams after a war of attrition, and both men received a standing ovation from the faithful Anarchy crowd.

Curt Stallion returned to Anarchy he told the Spaulding Hall crowd that he was what made St. Louis Wrestling great, not Jay, Warhorse, or either Bestie. After losing to Warhorse and failing to capture the Independent Wrestling TV title, he faces one of the few men who fights with a calculated recklessness as he does in Gary Jay. This match has a “show stealer” written all over it. Chip Day vs. Anthony “Sharkbait” Gutierrez Two of the meanest kicks in the business square off at Gateway to Anarchy in Chip Day and Sharkbait. “First things first, unfortunately Father Greg (Jovi) couldn’t be here tonight, he is busy negotiating for title opportunities and main event matches for Mr. Dirden, Miss Layne, and obviously, myself.” Christian Rose said as he addressed a lessthan-pleased Anarchy crowd. “Second things second, you may ask why Angelus Layne, a cornerstone of Saint Louis Anarchy, would join The Family. Well it’s because of all of you! She was forced to leave (wrestling) and none of you cared, you all forgot about her, and you all moved onto the next ‘flavor of the week’, Billie Starkz. Third things third, you may ask why we chose to excommunicate Thomas Shire. He thought he was bigger than us, he thought he was bigger than Greg, he thought he was bigger than The Family. Family comes first, and The Family is forever.” Hearing his name invoked, Thomas Shire came out to the ring and stared down each member of the family, and attacked each of them. Unfortunately the Family held strength in numbers, and as Shire hoisted Layne to his shoulders for a UFO, he was hit with a low blow and then ganged up on, with Layne knocking him out with a running knee. While beaten down on Friday night, Shire might be winning more fans in Anarchy by squarely positioning himself against Greg Jovi’s villainous Family. Anthony “Sharkbait” Gutierrez def. Chip Day While Chip Day might be more known as a heavy hitter across independent wrestling, this match showcased that he’s more than capable of showing his talents on the mat, grappling move for move with the professional MMA talent that

Anarchy Preview Gary Jay vs. Curt Stallion As of now, the man who has come closest to dethroning “The Monarch” Jeremy Wyatt is the “Stiff Robo Ginger” Gary Jay. As noted earlier in this preview, Jay and Wyatt’s match at Journey Pro Wrestling’s “Die Hard Is A Christmas Movie” event ended as a one hour time limit draw, with Wyatt retaining the belt. Gary Jay has made his wrestling home Spaulding Hall, the official headquarters of the Gary Jay Movement. The crowd erupts for the man when he arrives, when he leaves, and mostly when he wins. One of the four pillars of St. Louis wrestling, Jay is an embodiment of the great wrestling in the area, but that title has put him directly in the crosshairs of Curt Stallion. When “Lonestar”
fight happens in a cartoon and all you really see is a big cloud of dust with fists and kicks flying. The tide of the match turned when Stallion, on the floor outside the ring, jumped up and headbutted a diving/ attacking Gary Jay, who crashed head-first to the cold tile of the Spaulding Hall floor. Despite Jay knocking the hell out of Stallion throughout the match, Stallion’s trademark headbutts were the decider. Stallion pinned Gary Jay following the last headbutt, and most importantly, won against one of the Four Pillars of St. Louis Wrestling.
“Sharkbait ooh ah ah” chants at Spaulding Hall as he delivers clubbing, harsh kicks to anyone in his path. In what feels like a perfect matchup, the only man in Anarchy who can go kick-for-kick with Sharkbait is Chip Day. Day is coming off a great match with ACH at an Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment show less than two weeks ago, a nearly thirty-minute brawl which saw him lose his GWC belt to the man who vacated it when he originally signed a WWE contract. With a win, Day could prove that he deserves to be in the conversation for the Gateway Heritage Title. Aaron Williams vs. Thomas Shire Aaron Williams just had a fierce bout with Impact Wrestling’s Sami Callihan at Rockstar Pro Wrestling.
Two days after that squared off with Gary Jay at an IWA-Mid South show that left both combatants bruised and battle-torn, and Thomas Shire knows exactly what that feels like, having lost a tough tussle with Jay at the last Anarchy show, No Church In The Wild. Thomas Shire’s mixture of technical talent and very non-technical toughness makes him an interesting package in the ring and a tough match for anyone. “The King Of Hoss Island”, Shire trained in Japan, and All-Japan, Funking, and Funaki dojo student, and that expertise comes out in his matches. He even does a Baba special takedown. What’s not to like?
Anarchy ladder from different sides, The Kenway and Cole Radrick are as similar as they are different. The Kenway, a brash, over-confident yet talented wrestler who added a “The” to his name, versus Radrick, who has won the hearts and minds of the Anarchy fans through hard work in the ring. Both men look for a win to start 2020 on the right track.
Seishin & Kenny Alfonso vs. Ace Perry & Deacon Cash Deacon Cash, who I apologize for believing was named “Ethan Cash” and writing as such on the previous show, looks to make a name for himself alongside Ace Perry, who snagged a win with the Reigel The Kenway vs. Twins at No Church Cole Radrick In The Wild. Mat-based, methodical wrestling doesn’t get the praise it deserves in independent professional wrestling because it might not look as crazy as guys jumping from the top rope to the floor, but it’s a nuance that changes the flow of a typical show, and these two put on a great display of the style. I thought the match would tip in Day’s favor when he caught Sharkbait in a triangle, after Sharkbait attempted a huge punch on a downed Day. Sharkbait, as he so often does, wriggled out of the hold and in seconds Day was back on the defensive. Sharkbait ended the match with a big spinning heel kick, pinning Chip Day for the three count and adding another impressive win to his Anarchy record thus far.

This match, like many on the Anarchy card, spilled out of the ring. Big Beef cleared out what looked to be a third of the building with a huge dive to the outside, with Besties, fans, his teammate Larry D and plenty of chairs caught in the crossfire. The Besties sealed the deal and won the match, proving why they’re one of the best tag teams anywhere in wrestling today. “These two guys are fuckin’ badass, man.” Mat Fitchett said to the crowd following the match. “Play their music or something because these guys deserve to have this ring.” Fitchett also made note that Larry D has recently signed with Impact Wrestling, and The Besties In The will be plying his trade on World (Davey Vega TV. It has to be said that Yehi is a prototype for what a wrestler should be in many people’s minds. He’s a violent adonis, his good looks had women in the crowd cheering him on without ever seeing him perform before, and his precise tactics inside the ropes match or best anyone in the sport of pro wrestling today. Yehi slowed the pace of the match down to his liking, and, for the most part, took Warhorse’s rabid fans out of the match. Yehi captured Warhorse in the Koji Clutch, his go-to submission hold, and a desperate Warhorse fought to the ropes to break the hold. Warhorse was exasperated and put on the back foot by Yehi’s offense, but a big powerbomb (called a HORSEPOWERBOMB by Warhorse on Twitter) shifted the flow of the match. Warhorse rolled through another attempted Koji Clutch by Yehi and snuck a pin on the mat, hoisting Yehi by his own petard. Following the match, Warhorse and Fred Yehi stared each other down, and Warhorse offered a handshake, and likely, a path for Yehi to follow as he enters the world of Saint Louis Anarchy. Yehi put up a hand, but unwound a middle finger,

Nick Gage Full disclosure here, this one was a bit too chaotic for me to take notes on my phone during. This match made for a perfect storm of sorts. The crowd largely hated Wyatt. They’ve largely hated Wyatt for some time. Nick Gage came to give the people what they claim to want, a new champion. After Wyatt called Nick Gage “too stupid for the rules” at the last Anarchy Event, No Church In The Wild, he criticized the Spaulding Hall crowd for rooting on this outsider to take his belt. Before the match had even started, Nick Gage threw my pizza on the floor. Not a whole one, thankfully, but the remaining five or six square-cut slices slammed on the Spaulding Hall tile as Gage tossed the chair the pizza was sitting on. Frankly, it was an honor to lose a quarter of a pizza to a deathmatch wrestling icon. Wyatt did toss anything of mine thankfully, as his entrance was a bit more

By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu For the second year in a row, the Super Bowl doesn’t signal the end of the football calendar. Last year, the Alliance of American Football, or AAF, attempted and failed at creating a sustainable spring football league. This year, the XFL will look to learn from spring football’s mistakes of the past. You might remember the old XFL. World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon’s first attempt at an alternative to the NFL came back in 2001, aiming to emphasize the action and violence of the sport and adding in some professional wrestling-style flair that McMahon is at home creating. It was more of a sideshow than a football league, and the play on the field suffered, with teams not given adequate time to practice. McMahon’s second attempt at a professional football league will be a far different product than the XFL of old. The new XFL, slated for kickoff just a week after the Super Bowl, won’t have gimmick rules like fighting for a fumble instead of a coin
toss. It won’t have guys with “He Hates Me” on the backs of their jerseys, and it won’t have professional wrestling storylines where players are dating cheerleaders. What this new XFL will have however is a new set of rules, not yet tried before in professional football at any level, in what the league says is their attempt to make the game both more entertaining and safer. The first thing football fans will notice if they watch the first XFL game will be the redesign of the traditional kickoff. Unlike the AAF, which wiped out kickoffs entirely in lieu of simply giving the opposing team possession after a touchdown, the XFL opted to keep kickoffs but drastically change the alignment of players for them. The kicker and kick returner will be in just about the same spot, with the kicker pushed back to his team’s 25-yard line. Where the big change comes in is the positioning of everyone else, the kicking team will line up on the return team’s 35-yard line, and the return team will line up on their 30-yard line.
The XFL hopes that this will open up room for kick returners, and keep wouldbe tacklers from running at full speed into blockers or the returner. The other largest rule change from the NFL rulebook is the variation of extra points after a touchdown. In the NFL, you can either kick a field goal for one point, or go for two points by trying to score from two yards out. The new XFL has abolished kicked extra points, and gives teams three options of running offensive plays from the 2, 5, or 10-yard lines. An extra point from the two will be worth one point, from the five will be worth two, and converting an extra point from 10 yards out will be worth three points, the most drastic change in scoring the league will offer. With three-point extra points (bit of a mouthful), a team could score nine-point touchdowns, which could lead to wacky scorelines, but aims to give teams losing in games a way to climb back by scoring nine points at a time. Not only is the launch of the XFL this spring an
attempt to finally crack the spring football code, but it also marks St. Louis’s reintroduction to the world of pro football. With respect to the Slam, St. Louis’s women’s outdoor football team, and the indoor football team that existed under several aliases and in different leagues, there has been a pro football sized hole in the St. Louis sports scene since the departure of the Rams for Los Angeles. Following in the footsteps and the facilities of the Rams will be the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks (yes that ‘H’ in there is supposed to be capitalized). Training out of what was once known as Rams Park, and playing their home games in The Dome at America’s Center in downtown St. Louis, the BattleHawks will look to rekindle the city’s love for the game of football in the very building where the Greatest Show on Turf became one of the best football teams in the NFL. The BattleHawks are one of eight inaugural XFL franchises, split into two conferences. Joining the ‘Hawks in the Eastern Conference are
meticulous and muted, as it always is. Jeremy Wyatt’s business is usually done in the ring, but naturally, as many Nick Gage matches tend to do, it spilled outside immediately, plowing through the crowd and chairs and even through the entrance curtain, with other wrestlers scurrying to the back as the PVC pipes holding the curtains came crashing down. Wyatt and Gage took turns throwing each other into chairs that were being held up by fans, or just chairs on the ground, frankly, they were just throwing each other all over the place. One instance of crowd interaction saw a fan throw trash at Wyatt, but the Monarch remained focused on his mission. By the time the match came back to the ring, so did the chairs, with the referee and wrestlers alike both having to tell fans to stop throwing chairs into the ring. Gage tossed Wyatt onto about seven or eight chairs and attempted to go for the win but Wyatt managed to kick out of the pin. Wyatt had to reach into a bag of tricks he doesn’t usually go for, which included handcuffing Nick Gage, and choking him with the cuffs. Not finished, Wyatt went back under the ring for
more mayhem, and came back with a white powder, throwing it in Gage’s face and blinding him. Gage was staggered, blinded by the powder, throwing punches at Wyatt when Wyatt wasn’t standing across from him. Notably, the referee did nothing about this, even though the ref was calling rope breaks and other laws of pro wrestling earlier on in the match. Wyatt ended the match and the chaos by piledriving Nick Gage through a chair, pinning him, and retaining the Gateway Heritage Championship. Gage got on the mic afterwards to call out the referee who allowed him to be blinded but called the match down the middle for Wyatt. The crowd chanted “Fuck that ref” in agreement, and I felt honestly very worried for the poor guy. When Nick Gage is on the mic, people listen, and respond. “I’m gonna keep it real with you m’fers because I’m the realest m’fer in this business,” Gage said after the dust of the match had settled. “The last few weeks have been tough for me, one of my best friends, I call them my brothers, is in the hospital fighting for his life right now. You know what? To come here, in front of all you people, and you guys go nuts when I’m out here, it makes me forget about all that. So thank you. Let me keep it real, I’m here to stay in St. Louis. And I feel like I’m about to start running things around this m’fer.” That bold statement by Nick Gage has put the world of Anarchy on notice. Between the introduction of Fred Yehi to the Anarchy fold and the statement of intent from Nick Gage to stay in St. Louis and make his presence felt, 2020 looks to be a groundbreaking year for Saint Louis Anarchy, if Gateway To Anarchy is any indication.

the DC Defenders, Tampa Bay Vipers, and New York Guardians. The Western Conference will be comprised of the Seattle Dragons, Los Angeles Wildcats, Houston Roughnecks, and Dallas Renegades. There will also be a practice squad, referred to as “Team 9”, which will operate as a full team and coaching staff, but won’t play any on-the-record XFL games. Team 9 serves as a feeder team, which the eight XFL teams could sign players or coaches from. On the field, the BattleHawks will have some familiar faces if you’re a passionate follower of college football. Ole Miss standout Jordan Ta’amu looks to be the starting quarterback for the fledgling team, with Brogan Roback, considered “one of the best quarterbacks in the history of Eastern Michigan University” taking snaps as a backup QB. Ta’amu and Roback will be throwing to some familiar faces for Mizzou fans, Tiger wideouts L’Damian Washington and Marcus Lucas. They’ll have to work hard to stand out in a deep receiving core, as of this
writing the BattleHawks have eleven potential receivers on the roster. Standing out amongst the rest of the receiver field is De’Mornay Pierson-El, who was a human highlight reel as a punt returner at the University of Nebraska. The XFL’s franchises are in training camp in Houston as they prepare for their introductory season, and teams have had a few months since the mid-October draft to truly figure out what they have. It’s somewhat impossible to say which team will be really good or really bad, and that’s part of the fun of this whole new league. XFL will have to have the eyeballs on the product and the money behind it to succeed, two things the AAF did not have last year. The BattleHawks has already sold the majority of their available tickets, so it seems as though the attention is there. If Vince McMahon’s money is there, this XFL could be everything the old one couldn’t be. If that money dries up, the league could go the way of the AAF, and be dead before the season ends.

Galentine’s Day: The Revolutionary Alternative to Valentine’s Day By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Let’s be honest for a minute, Valentine’s Day can really suck for some people. Specifically, it can suck for people who are single during the holiday and have no choice but to be met with constant reminders everywhere of the fact that they’re single. I have spent many years growing up feeling bitter and resentful on Valentine’s Day, wondering if being alone meant something was wrong with me. It would take me more years than I care to admit to realize that if I waited to be in a relationship to enjoy anything in life, I’d always be
unhappy. I tend to think more people that are single during Valentine’s Day have a similar experience to mine. While there are also single people who genuinely never bought into the commercialized excuse to sell and buy candy for their nonexistent significant other, I simply wasn’t one of them. A few years ago, when I found myself single again during Valentine’s Day, and I decided that there had to be a better use of my time than being home and watching romantic comedies from the early 2000s. The universe happened to
be on my side, and a good friend of mine mentioned that she would be spending the holiday alone despite the fact she had a boyfriend because he’d have to work all night. So, I invited her out to Red Lobster for Lobster Fest and she agreed. We ended up getting each other a cheesy gift and had a nice dinner together as friends, and to this day it is one of my favorite memories with her. I would later find out that there was actually a term for this, called “Galentine’s Day.” The term originated from a Parks and Recreation episode, and
as described in the show is technically supposed to take place on Feb. 13. Personally, I still prefer to celebrate the holiday on the same day as Valentine’s Day with my closest single friends. I celebrated Galentine’s Day again with a few friends last year too, even though I was in a long-distance relationship. We all exchanged gifts, got dressed up to look pretty, and saw a great movie together. I eventually realized how much time I had wasted in my life staying home and pitying myself for being single on Valentine’s Day, and vowed from then on
6B
to never make that mistake again. Whether I am single or in a relationship, I want to be the kind of person who lives a fulfilling and happy life, which in my case includes being a part of these over-commercialized candy-selling holidays. Nobody has a productive day sitting home alone and feeling sorry for themselves, so for any single people who aren’t happy with their relationship this Valentine’s Day, why not take the opportunity to enjoy the celebration with people you love? It may not be romantic love, but it’s still love.
I would encourage the people who don’t really want to stay home alone, to call a good friend or even a family member and have a night on the town! Buy each other flowers, go enjoy a nice dinner, see a movie, or do whatever else it is you’d like to do. Galentine’s Day isn’t just about loving the platonic relationships in your life, but also about loving yourself. Each and every one of you readers deserves a cute teddy bear or bouquet of flowers, even if you have to get it for yourself. Happy Galentine’s Day, everybody!

Could a DNA Test Save You From Breast Cancer? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Breast Cancer is a terrifying thought for any woman, and even more so for women who have a family history of Breast Cancer. I myself had the unfortunate experience of seeing my mother go through the pain of fighting Breast Cancer for three years and losing her before my age reached the double-digits. It has been a long-time fear of mine that one day I could suffer the same fate, and until recently I felt significantly powerless over the whole subject. Then, a few weeks ago, my older sister called me to tell me she had some bloodwork done and tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation. This was the same gene mutation our mother had, which makes women significantly higher at risk of developing breast cancer. To be clear, BRCA1 and BRCA2 are rare but important proteins that can make a person significantly more likely to develop Breast or Ovarian cancer in their lifetime
and at a significantly younger age than average. These mutations are believed to be passed down genetically. According to The Susan G. Komen Foundation, “Like other gene mutations, BRCA1/2 mutations are rare in the general population. In the U.S., about 1 in 400 people have a BRCA1/2 mutation. Prevalence varies by ethnic group. Among Ashkenazi Jewish women and men, about 1 in 40 have a BRCA1/2 mutation.” “Estimates of risk are different for BRCA1 carriers and BRCA2 carriers. By age 70, the chance of developing breast cancer is: 55-65 percent for BRCA1 carriers, About 45 percent for BRCA2 carriers. Women in the general population have about a 7 percent chance of getting breast cancer by age 70. (The lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 12 percent.) This means by age 70: In a group of 100 women without a BRCA1/2 mutation, about 7 will get breast cancer. In a group of 100 women
with a BRCA1/2 mutation, 45-65 will get breast cancer.” My sister has decided on preventative surgeries in order to lower the risk of cancer development later in life, and her insurance offered her the chance to send DNA tests in the mail to her siblings to see if they were also positive for BRCA1. I happily accepted the opportunity to take the test in order to find out if I am positive as well. In about a week’s time, I had a saliva test shipped to my house and quickly received. The process to take it was surprisingly simple, and I was able to ship my sample back the same day I received it. I did more research into this test and found multiple online resources to make them more readily available to the general public in order for anyone who wants to know if they’re positive the ability to take control of their health. As I’m currently writing this, I have not had any
update on my results. In the meantime, I have seriously considered my options about what I should do next if I turn out to be positive for BRCA1. There are a few options for being positive for BRCA1/2 in order to avoid developing breast and ovarian cancer, including prophylactic mastectomy with breast reconstruction surgery, as well as Prophylactic oophorectomy. According to www.mayoclinic.org, “For women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, prophylactic mastectomy reduces the risk of developing breast cancer by 90 to 95 percent.” However, not every woman necessarily needs to get this DNA test, since the mutations themselves are so rare. According to www.mayoclinic.org, “You might be at increased risk of having an inherited gene mutation that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancers — and a candidate for genetic testing — if you have: A personal history of breast cancer
diagnosed before age 45. A personal history of breast cancer diagnosed before age 50 and a second primary breast cancer, one or more relatives with breast cancer, or an unknown or limited family medical history. A personal history of triple-negative breast cancer diagnosed at age 60 or younger. A personal history of two or more types of cancer. A personal history of ovarian cancer. A personal history of male breast cancer. A personal history of breast cancer and one or more relatives with breast cancer diagnosed before age 50, two or more relatives diagnosed with breast cancer at any age, one or more relatives with ovarian cancer, one or more relatives with male breast cancer, or two or more relatives with prostate cancer or pancreatic cancer. A personal history of breast cancer and Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish ancestry. A personal history of prostate cancer or pancreatic cancer with two
or more relatives with BRCA-associated cancers. A history of breast cancer at a young age in two or more blood relatives, such as your parents, siblings or children. A relative with a known BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. One or more relatives with a history of cancer that would meet any of these criteria for gene testing.” I insist to anyone who meets the criteria of being potentially positive for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations to get in contact with their Health Insurance companies to see if they have the option to take either a saliva or blood DNA test. If my own mother had taken these DNA tests when she was my age, she could have taken the action to give herself another forty years on this Earth with those who love her. I implore you to not gamble with your lives, they are too precious. In order to purchase an at-home BRCA1/2 DNA Test, they can be found at www. home.color.com/

The Trials and Tribulations of the Furry Fandom By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
Rosemont, Illinois, Pop. 4202, is a suburb of Chicago that has gated communities, offices, over 50 restaurants, and a large amount of hotels thanks to being near the airport. The Hyatt Regency there becomes packed in December where Midwest FurFest occupies the convention center. Midwest FurFest is a sanctuary for people who dress up, draw, and play: the furry fandom. First of all, what is a furry and what are the origins of the fandom? Oxford Dictionary defines a furry as “An enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics, in particular a person who dresses up in costume as such a character or uses one as an avatar online.” The fandom is rather large with a survey conducted in 2011 by the International Anthropomorphic Research Project reporting 1.4-2.8 million members. The fandom started in the 1980s science fiction conventions where a conversation involving the comic book series “Albedo Anthropomorphics” started discussions on anthropomorphic
characters started groups at comic book and scifi conventions. The first Furry convention, ConFurence 0, was held in California in 1989.
convention-going furries, according to a study from 2017, was $1007 for convention-related expenses. They also will hold conventions, with the biggest
Another area of stigma is the sexual aspects of the fandom from NSFW art to zoophilia. Now, let’s talk about what they do. Furries will make art of their “Fursona,” an avatar that represents them or their ideal self. Some, about 15 percent according to FurScience, will also make fursuits, a costume for the fursona. Most members don’t fursuit due to the price, with an average price of $3000 (for a full body one) according to The Billfold, which is a big investment for a lot of people. The average money spent by
being Midwest FurFest (MFF), Anthrocon, and BLFC (Biggest Little Furcon). St. Louis has a convention held in March/April named Gateway FurMeet. Let’s get to the metaphorical elephant in the room, which is the stigma. Most Furries will not reveal their identity to their family. The stigma originated with a 2001 Vanity Fair article by George Gurley who described them as sexcrazed freaks calling them
“plushophiles”.. A major instance for Television is the “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” episode “Fur and Loathing” which some members were given a script and starred as extras, according to the WikiFur article, described the conventions as lectures and sex. A Dr. Phil segment also described the fandom as lowlifes, having a mother who said that Culpeo Wolf, her daughter was “putting her life on hold to attend [conventions].” Josh Strom, a staff member of Anthrocon said “We go to conventions to hang out with friends, maybe buy something like art or badges, go to a discussion panel or see a show. Swinger parties and fetishes are there, but that’s not what the fandom is about.” Another area of stigma is the sexual aspects of the fandom from NSFW art to zoophilia. Most furries are OK with the art with 30 percent of male members feeling positive about it. Most furries are against zoophilia/bestiality because it violates the animals’ rights, most furries (94 percent) support animal rights and a large amount own/have
owned a pet (98 percent). People who actually commit bestiality are quickly kicked out of the fandom. (See the Kero the Wolf scandal). Due to the stigma perpetuated by some media outlets, furries tend to shun the press. The stigma has caused incidents, an example being when 19 people were hospitalized when an unknown assailant intentionally caused a leak of toxic chlorine gas at Midwest FurFest 2014. Another minor stigma, was the small section known as Nazi Furries, where they will gate crash other conventions, for instance a fursuit maker named Magnus Diridian (who is alleged to be egging members on, previously impersonating a recently deceased fursuiter), made a Confederate flag fursuit that resulted in him being banned from conventions. EJ Dickson of Rolling Stone reported that “everyone here is welcome [to Midwest FurFest] — except Nazis.” The fandom does do a lot of good for animals, with most conventions donating money to local pet shelters or animal sanctuaries. For instance,
Midwest FurFest donated $220,000 dollars to Felines and Canines, a local no-kill shelter. Anthrocon donated almost $46,450 to PEARL Parrot Rescue. Furries have a sense of community as they will help members, most of the time for psychological help. Dr. Sharon Roberts, the creator of Furscience, said to Vice that “It’s a place for social support, moral support, emotional support.” Furries tend to be more satisfied with life than other groups like sports fans. They will tend to collaborate and make stuff together. About a third of furries are unemployed, those that are employed (55 percent) tend to have high job satisfaction. They can have many types of careers including vets, army, security, and some animal-related positions. Furries are a group that, besides the stigma, have a great time with fellow members. They make art, stories, mascot costumes that are better than most sport teams costume. To summarize, being a furry is like most hobbies, something that takes up a large amount of free time and lots of money.

Of course, the individual will think it’s a joke until you put your foot down and show them no means no. We should not be letting anything or anyone come between our happiness within ourselves when we have come to far in life and all we want is the best for our lives. It’s probably easier said than physically done! But once you have actually come to the realization of what’s best for you and your life it will show on the outside. Everyone will notice your happiness! Probably before you even notice it because
everyone deserves nothing but the best in life. Unfortunately, we are unable to receive it if we keep letting people whom have no meaning in our lives. To the Waitress Who Never Texted Me By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Coming to terms with one’s sexuality is at times a long and exhausting process. It took me many years to completely accept myself, and try to venture into the dating world. Over time, I have ended up collecting stories and lessons learned from my dating life, which I will now be sharing every month for roughly the next year. All names will be changed to protect the privacy of everyone mentioned, as they deserve anonymity and respect– no matter how bad the stories may have ended. Instead of telling these stories in chronological order, I will be telling them by order of importance of their morals. My dear readers, I don’t think I have to explain exactly why dating is so hard. I’ve made an entire column over the subject, and I still have plenty of stories and lessons to share with you all. A big issue that nobody talks about in the dating world is trying to put yourself out there again after a breakup. It’s been a few months, and you know you miss kissing someone cute, so you try your best to get over your social-anxiety in order to find the next lady to share your love of Disney movies and pasta with. Not too long ago, I also had to learn how to take baby steps into the dating world, and it was definitely not easy to do. For me specifically, it can be particularly
difficult because I don’t particularly like dating apps. I’ve had the most success on them as opposed to meeting someone in real life, but if I had a choice, I’d like to meet someone organically. I’m an old romantic who likes the idea of having a “How we met” story to tell at parties, to my sisters, and to potential future grandchildren. It may seem silly, but “We swiped right and your Mom said, ‘Hey,’” somehow isn’t quite as quaint. Since I’m also a gay woman in the rural midwest though, you can imagine how often it is I actually meet somebody. If you’re a recurring reader, you in fact know exactly how often. However, once in a blue moon, you have a chance encounter and the ability to make a first impression. Boy howdy,
did I make a big impression recently. I went out to dinner with a couple of good friends to a nice restaurant, where our waitress happened to be particularly stunning. Everybody, meet Sarah the waitress. Sarah was my usual type, tall, short dark hair, big dark eyes behind a pair of blue glasses, and a few tattoos. One of my friends, whom I will refer to as Kelsie, was immediately more forthcoming in letting our waitress know exactly how attractive she was in the most persistent and straightforward way she could. It is also worth noting that Kelsie had a serious relationship at the time with a boy, so the eager flirting felt a bit out of left-field, to say the least. Our other friend, Janis,
made the effort on multiple occasions to try to get Kelsie to stop and calm down when the advances were starting to get a bit too rambunctious to be considered innocent. Fortunately, for the most part, Sarah was understanding and even a bit flattered. When I finally talked to Kelsie privately and told her that while she could go home and texted her boyfriend, I had full intentions to leave my phone number with Sarah. Eventually, she calmed down and gave me her blessing before we returned to our table. I made a comment to Sarah about who does her tattoo work and gave her my number, telling her she should give me her tattoo artist’s information later. It seemed to me that she understood what I was really doing, and seemed very receptive to it. Once she had gone back into the kitchen however, the night took a turn that I was not expecting at all. Kelsie started acting up towards Janis and called her a rather harsh profane word. Kelsie may have been kidding, but as everyone around us was staring due to the volume, Janis asked her to stop. When Kelsie did it again, she moved to pretend to get in Janis’s face as she grabbed the check wallet. That’s when it
manipulators in a relationship /marriage. They don’t want you to prosper in life and will always want you beneath them. Those kind of people you need to keep out of your life and refrain from having contact with them. On the other hand, there’s many loving and kind men/women in this world and those are the type of people you need to surround yourself with, because everyone deserves to be nothing but happy and living in peace. So by all means sis, wipe your tears and let that hurt go. Realize he didn’t deserve you in the first place. Your beautiful, continue your education, and keep working hard on those goals you’ve always wanted to achieve.

happened. Janis moved as if she was going to tap Kelsie on the head playfully with the check wallet, and Kelsie moved backward to block the action, which led to Kelsie accidentally tripping backward and falling onto the ground. Seeing as I was right in front of them, I knew for a fact that Kelsie had simply tripped. To everyone else around us, however, it looked like Janis just slapped the living daylights out of Kelsie and knocked her to the ground. The awkward and scared stares we got could have burned holes into our skulls as we moved to try to exit as quickly and painlessly as possible before someone considered calling the police. Thankfully, nobody was hurt and we all actually had a really good laugh about the whole thing on the way home. However, I also knew that there was no way that Sarah wasn’t going to hear about the incident and think that we were violent and crazy. I had accepted before we even reached a red light that there was no future beyond that wild dinner. Somehow, I was honestly okay with the idea of just enjoying the misadventure with my friends instead. There will surely be other cute waitresses who will probably think
I am crazy in the future. Should Sarah ever see this, I can honestly say I don’t blame you for not texting me. If I were in your shoes, I probably would’ve assumed we were all legitimately crazy and wouldn’t want to get involved. I promise you though that Janis did not actually knock Kelsie to the ground, I saw it with my own eyes that the poor girl simply fell over her own feet at a rather inopportune moment. We may be loud and Kelsie may be a bit too energetic for her own good at times, but we really are not insane. We’re just wildly unlucky. For what it is worth, thank you for being the first person that I felt like I could approach and try to move on in my love life. I needed it more than you know. I’m telling you all this because even if something doesn’t play out how you want it to, it’s important to take the first step to put yourself out in the dating world. Moving on can be really difficult to do, and there’s no way to get around that. However, any small step in the right direction is progress, and we all deserve the chance to progress and grow. Also, when you go out to eat with your friends, please be careful to not look like you’re trying to turn dessert into a WWE match.

Better Know A Sport
Bandy
By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
With the frosty winter months raging on, this edition of Better Know A Sport hits the ice for a sport that’s only played in one of the fifty United States, but is one of the most popular sports in often-cold Nordic nations such as Sweden and Finland: Bandy. Bandy is a sport that poses the question: What if we just combined ice hockey and soccer? The answer to that question is a game that functionally, looks like ice hockey. Players on ice skates using sticks to knock an object into a goal guarded by a heavily padded goaltender, much like the hockey we’re used to watching in the National Hockey League. Bandy however, existed before some guy named Lord Stanley decided to give the Montreal Canadiens a fancy cup in 1893. The soccer twist in bandy comes in the structure of the game. Eleven active players per team, playing on a roughly one hundred yard by fifty yard

Russia and Kazakhstan. In the 20th Century, both bandy and hockey were played in Europe, primarily in Nordic countries. Ice hockey quickly became more popular than bandy in most of Europe, because of its inclusion in the Olympics. Many players across Europe switched from bandy to hockey with the goal of playing on the world’s biggest stage.
The smaller ice surfaces/rinks of hockey are also much easier to maintain than the soccer field-size sheets of ice required for bandy, which played a large part in the dwindling of bandy’s popularity. Bandy was the top ice sport of the Soviet Union until 1955, when the USSR started to field an ice hockey team to compete internationally.
If hockey usurped bandy, where is bandy today? At the highest levels, bandy is only a professional team sport in two countries, Sweden and Russia. Finland also hosts a high-level bandy league, Bandyliiga, but it is semi-professional, and often a feeder league for the Elitserien (Swedish bandy league) and the Russian Bandy Super League. The Bandy World Championships are an annual tournament comprised of twenty nations that are part of the Federation of International Bandy, including the United States. The US team finished in sixth place at the 2019 Bandy World Championships in Vänersborg, Sweden,
while the Russians took their twelfth title, on top of the fourteen captured by the Soviet Union. Russia is dominant in the sport of bandy today, and the national team has had constant support from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin is the first Russian head of state to openly support the sport of bandy, stating that the sport should be better supported by the Russian government.
In short, Bandy’s unique-yetnot-so-unique nature is why it’s treasured where it has thrived, but mostly died where it hasn’t. Since hockey is largely similar and played on a smaller, easier to maintain surface, hockey became the team ice sport most common around the world. Bandy’s impact is felt on hockey, and fans of the sport will notice that European hockey players (notably Russians) play with grace and style that is lost on their Canadian and American counterparts. If you’ve ever been in awe of the way Vladimir Tarasenko skates around defenses, thank the sport of bandy.

Local Habitat Strike Team Receives External Grants to Restore Habitat for Wildlife and Provide Lewis and Clark Student Training Press Release
The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center’s (NGRREC.) Habitat Strike Team recently received funding totaling $353,632 from both the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) Habitat Fund and the Division of Natural Heritage to continue and expand their management capacity in the confluence region of Illinois. “Our affiliation with NGRREC goes far deeper than the administrative construct of the college, and they are a true partner in conservation, education and workforce development,” said Scott Moss, Restoration Ecology program coordinator at Lewis and Clark Community College. “This project continues to illustrate the college’s commitment to ecological restoration, conservation and sustainability by giving our students relevant experience leading to the development of professional career paths.” Moss works closely with Habitat Strike Team Coordinator Cody Berry, who is a graduate of the Restoration Ecology program and has worked his way up the ranks within the team to reach his lead position. “The funding received through the IDNR’s Habitat Fund and Division of Natural Heritage is an excellent new opportunity to expand the scope of the Strike Team’s work while continuing to employ proper management practices and simultaneously engaging the public through outreach and Lewis and Clark students through training opportunities,” Berry said. “Due to our multifaceted approach, our team positively affects local ecological health, maintaining quality recreational access on many public natural areas and private sites enrolled in the Illinois Recreational Access Program.” The inception of

In the future, NGRREC’s education and conservation team hope to lead guided hikes to showcase this property’s beauty to the public. Aside from habitat management, the Habitat Strike Team also assists NGRREC with education and outreach initiatives. These include public open house events such as Neighbor Nights and the recent Brewers and Biologists collaboration, as well as NGRREC’s college intern program and the annual Water Festival, both of which target the next generation of environmental stewards. “These are great opportunities to educate both the public, and specifically students, on topics regarding ecological restoration and habitat management for wildlife, which
can also benefit water quality,” Shew said. Conservationists focus on discussing the tools and techniques used in restoration such as prescribed fire, timber stand improvement, and invasive species removal methods, as well as programs available to private-land owners, such as IRAP. “The Habitat Strike Team has been a huge supporter of NGRREC’s education and outreach programs,” said NGRREC Environmental Educator Allison Rhanor. “Our programs give the team more varied ways in which to reach the public and educate students, and in turn, our programs directly benefit from their participation and added expertise. It’s been a seamless partnership, and I’m excited for what’s to come as both programs continue to grow.” For more information or questions regarding NGRREC’s Habitat Strike Team, contact Shew at
