iscover Day 2020 was an extravagant occasion, which included numerous activities. The majority of the students in attendance are high school students and their families. They visited campus to explore majors and enjoy the fun festivities that come along with student life, such as the walking tacos. “We really want to emphasize, the earlier students complete applications and submit, the more they maximize their eligibility for grants,” said Mary-Kate Terry in financial aid. Current L&C students, faculty, staff, advisors and coordinators were able to provide the most up to date and accurate information for the visitors. There were multiple games for enrolling students to play and win prizes of L&C branded t-shirts, backpacks, school supplies and lots more. Media services were also distributing prizes for completing a short student media survey. Students and their families were able to view and speak with current students and faculty members from Lewis and Clark nursing program, student development and counseling, College for Life, financial aid, Phi Theta Kappa for Honors College, speech (public speaking), criminal justice, welding, Pathways to STEM leadership scholarships with Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois,
as well as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). One of the advantages for being a Phi Theta Kappa student is that it looks good on resumes and helps with scholarships. Cathy Laramee, coordinator of Nelson Campus, located in Edwardsville, Illinois, was in attendance for students who are considering enrolling for classes on her campus. Student Mili Pinksi, who attends SIUE, said, “Communication is more than just speeches, and the career options are endless.” There were also current L&C students, instructors, teachers, associate professors, etc., available to talk with potential students looking to learn more about mass communication, process operations technology/instrumentation and control systems, Missouri Baptist University, and Student Success Center, among others. New students looking to enroll were given a chance to learn about the multiple careers offered here at L&C, along with other college campuses they partner with, such as Missouri Baptist University and SIUE. Student Success Center specialist Ashley Luster said, “It’s important to advertise one-on-one tutoring for the Student Success Center. It’s covered through student fees, and students should really consider getting the
extra help at no cost.” New students, as well as current students, can take full advantage of the Student Success Center while attending classes here at L&C. There were also current students in attendance to promote their L&C clubs, including The Bridge (campus newspaper), BSA (Black Student Association), LC Pride, SGA (Student Government Association) and the Video Game Club etc. L&C Program Director Nathan Pearcy, of the radio station, said, “It’s a very hands-on program. It has great success with job placement. We have half of our graduating class being placed into radio.” Trailblazer Commons Property Manager Moselle Ash was in attendance to answer any questions for new students and family members interested in the on-campus apartments, which are offered for students at L&C. They offer shared bedrooms, private bedrooms and other amenities. New students looking to reside there were also given a tour to view the apartments. Those looking to join the Video Game Club please can contact David Crull at dkcrull@ lc.edu, and those wanting to join LC Pride can contact either Shaggy at gdraper@lc.edu or Steve Higgins at shiggins@lc.edu. The LC Pride respects as well as honors all students’ confidentiality.

Board Members Hold Closed Sessions With L&C Departments In An Effort To Learn About Our Campus By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
After many requests from employees here at Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C), the Board of Trustees is offering departments the opportunity to schedule a listening session with two board members in an effort for better understanding of their place on campus. According to L&C’s Interim President Lori Artis the goals of these sessions are as follows: 1. To learn more about your department/ division 2. To tour facilities, learn about technology, and meet Steve Campbell, Program Coordinator and Professor of Graphic Design, spoke employees 3. To learn about on behave of the Graphic Design and Web challenges depart- design programs. ments might currently Photo by David Tupper. be facing 4. To hear about de5. To hear about stra- about ways to continpartment’s successes tegic goals ue to support students and achievements 6. To hear ideas and the community.
There have been several listening sessions held to date, and while the meetings are not mandatory, Artis has received an overall positive feedback thus far. “The Board has commented on how informational, educational, and transparent the sessions have been. Employees have expressed a feeling of support from the Board who are asking important questions about their needs and their challenges. Overall, the sessions are creating an open dialogue between employees and the board that will serve the college well for years to come,” said Artis. Ethan Braasch is the manager of the Horticulture and Grounds Department,
and has recently had one of these listening sessions with Board members Dwight Werts and Julie Johnson. With only two people in the department, Braasch felt that the meeting between the four of them was both relaxed and intimate. “We were excited when we found out the Board was doing these listening sessions as we wanted a chance to relay the importance of the Monticello Sculpture Gardens and of the general aesthetic of the campus in the success of the institution as a whole. Both Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Werts listened intently to our presentation, taking notes and asking poignant questions throughout. My impression was that
they were there to get to know us personally and to understand the ins and outs of our operations. They were happy to offer input for some of the questions we had for them and seemed eager to help us succeed in our efforts to make the campus beautiful and welcoming,” said Braasch. Braasch recommends other departments arrange a listening session if possible. “It’s just good to know that there is a concerted effort by both long-standing and new board members to become familiar with us, as individuals and as a department,” said Braasch. Club Day Brings Cool Opportunities for L&C Students By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
L&C Club Day, having taken place on Feb 5, 2020, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., was well attended and received by the L&C student body. The event was co-sponsored by the Student Government Association and Student Activities, providing multiple booths and free food for everyone in attendance. The event provided the opportunity for current students to discover and sign up for the various clubs of their
choice. The event had been proposed a few weeks before during a Student Government Association meeting and planned within a two week time period by the executives of the Student Government Association. Student Activities President and Student Government Association Executive Jenna Shelton says she had been inspired last semester to propose such an event. “Last semester I had put the Student
Activities meeting on the dry erase board and had put ‘join a club.’ Well, we had about 12 students show up looking for music and drama and other clubs to join. It was a wording mistake on my behalf, of course, but it got me thinking. We have a Discover Day for high school students and their parents, and we have Spring and Fall Fests, but everyone’s so busy having fun they don’t really get too much of an opportunity to look into
the clubs, and they’re closer to the end of the semester. I thought, ‘What if we have a day solely for our students where they can learn about clubs and services that are offered?’” The event showed an effort by the students to get involved with various groups who attended, such as The Bridge, LC Pride, the Video Gaming Club, the Veterans Club, Active Minds, Student Activities, Student Government Association, as well as
other Student Services. Shelton hopes that the event will become recurring to give the students a chance to be more involved with the clubs on campus. “As an older, non-traditional student, I was feeling very out of place until I went to a Student Activities meeting. I have been able to meet some pretty great people and make many new friends that I don’t think I would have had I not joined a club. I want that opportunity for

D.C. Cooper Explores Public Speaking By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Public speaker D.C. Cooper came to Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) on Feb. 7th to speak with students inside Reid Memorial Library. He talked about the benefits of public speaking, and why it is important for any major a student may be currently taking and/or interested in taking. Cooper was able to answer questions for students who seemed to be shy with nervousness and anxiety, when it comes to public speaking. He recommended students
who tend to suffer from anxiety to relax, become familiar with the space/area you will be speaking in, practice physical activities and roll while loosening up your shoulders. It is always important to be familiar with a subject matter. “You want to speak and make sure every person in every zone will hear you clearly,” said Cooper. He informed students it is best to start by looking around the audience because you will be able to make yourself feel more at
ease before presenting your speech to your audience. Gazing at the entrance, being ready to share information, and making a few adjustments to be able to make you feel comfortable also help. Cooper has had previous experience in numerous areas in regard to public speaking, his voice over talent for radio, corporations and nonprofit organizations. Cooper has won over several Toastmasters Speaking Awards. He has a background with the media in the following
areas: broadcasting on KPLR TV Channel 11, Cable Access Television, KMOX 1120 AM, Magic 104.9 (which now broadcasts a alt. rock format) and KDHX FM 88.1. Cooper also hosted a weekly radio talk show, “The News Room.” Cooper said, “Topics that I’m not familiar with I find the most challenging.” His abilities for public speaking have been able to provide opportunities, such as working as an in-show announcer for many awards programs, as
every student at L&C. I want them to be able to find their place, their ‘home.’ My goal is for Club Day to be an event that is held within the first couple of weeks every semester, so students can find others they can relate to based on their interests. We planned Club Day within a very short time period this semester, and while I believe we had a pretty good turn out, I think if we’d had a bit more time, it could have been even better.”
well as being master of ceremonies for several events. Cooper has been an emcee for many private, public and corporate groups including, the City of St. Louis, General American Life Insurance Company, Anhauser Busch, and the Illinois Reality Association, as well as, the Community Action Agency of St. Louis County and the Professional Business Leadership Council. Back in September 1978, when Cooper was just a freshman in college, he, along with
other students, were required to attend service at a chapel on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10a.m.-11a.m. He started going to the library, and in November 1978 he listened to a tape of Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, which was officially presented by Dr. King in Washington, D.C. at Lincoln Memorial in 1963. By February 1979, Cooper first presented this speech to his audience. As of today, he has presented this speech to well over 60,050 students.

Presentation Shines Light on the Success of L&C’s Automotive Program and Potential Growth
By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu Christopher Reynolds, Program Coordinator for the Automotive Technology Program gave a presentation at the last Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday Feb, 11. In the presentation Reynolds pointed out the success of the program, what they need to expand and why. Reynolds informed the BOT that the program has hosted two Illinois College Automotive Instructor Association Conferences, that the curriculum developed in-house has been shared globally and that the program certifies technicians to work on other things such as mobile air conditioning systems to name a few. “As a flagship program we’ve made success in the industry we serve. Below is a brief list of employers who we’re grateful to work with or receive feedback from, in an effort to enhance our student potential. Enterprise
Holdings, they recruit here every year, Bi State Development Agency, we have roughly five to six students right now working for Metrolink, starting out at nearly $60,000 a year working on buses even though we don’t have that program. Quality GMC Buick Cadillac, Mungenast Alton Toyota, Central Illinois Trucking, Hertz Fleet, Tuckers Automotive in Alton, Tesla, General Motors, Our first female graduate in many years is now a corporate employee for GM in the Detroit metropolitan area. Roberts Motors, as well as Ford Motor Company. Last semester we got notification from Subaru that we are part of Subaru university now, where our students can access factory Subaru credentials while in a twoyear Community College in the Midwest. All Jets Automotive, Al’s Transmissions, a graduate
of our program who owns a very successful transmission shop in Edwardsville Illinois, Dobbs Auto and Tire, Auto Tire, St. Charles Missouri Parks and Recreation, the coordinator of all the maintenance for that site is on our Advisory Committee and is a certificate graduate of the program, and Wiese, a forklift manufacturer in the Midwest. I never thought a forklift company would reach out to us, but the technology transfers and the diagnostics transfer just the same,” said Reynolds.. According to Reynolds the program has made recommendations in the past in order to address facility needs. “Auto intends to expand offerings into the medium-heavy-duty truck bus inter transit service areas, but has a difficult time utilizing the antiquated facilities for our core and priority program which is
automotive technology,” said Reynolds. Reynolds goes on to explain that in order to meet accreditation requirements more space is needed, and then gives his reasoning as to why development of a new facility is necessary. “Developing a new facility for auto will allow our program to positively respond to recommendations made by the ASE Education Foundation that have been ongoing. Size pending, the automotive technology program will be capable of expanding offerings to supermarkets with higher pay scales within and beyond our district. So development of a new facility will help us in the following manners. First one is demonstrating commitment to ASE Education Foundations ongoing recommendations from 1997 through 2013. Enhance autos perspective by potential students in campus
visitors. Enhance the workable space for student faculty and club usage within the program and allow potential for expansion, as currently zero service bays, based on the equipment we have can handle a medium-heavy or truck footprint,” said Reynolds. Trustee Julie Johnson then asked Reynolds whether or not a temporary facility could be used off campus in the meantime? To which Reynolds said was possible, but could conflict with the students scheduling demands with required on campus courses. Trustee Rust asked Reynolds how many graduates were unemployed? Reynolds responded by elaborating on how secure the service industry is, and how even if the person doesn’t go into automotive precisely, there are plenty of jobs to be had. Student Trustee April Tulgetske also expressed her
interest in expanding the R program. af “I would definitely like ch to see enhancement in the 5. high school programs. I rec think it would do a lot for mo our community. My son is “T 14 and has expressed that Kn he loves cars, and wants to ut work on exotic cars. So hav- of ing that available in the high tal school curriculum I think de would attract them here sid as well. I’m not sure how Lib we’d implement that, but ex I think it would be great be for our community,” said for Tulgetske. it “Absolutely. It’s a very ad- co vanced industry and peo- air ple don’t think of it that “ way. We all took a car to can get here didn’t we? A lot of communication and a lot of high priority items are on that vehicle that we take for granted as consumers,” said Reynolds. “Yeah, and nobody can really work on their own car anymore like they used to,” said Johnson.

Meet L&C Student Amiyah Williams By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Amiyah Williams was born on July 26. Her hometown is Alton, IL., and she currently resides in Godfrey, IL. She was very fortunate to have graduated high school early in 2017 at Alton High School, instead of in 2018. Williams’ course of study here at Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) is her general studies. Her ultimate goal is to become a fashion designer. She decided to attend L&C because it is close to her home. In Williams’ spare time, she enjoys playing video games, sketching and spending time with her family. During her years in middle school, she attended the National Junior Honor Society. In fact, she is very proud of herself for accomplishing this honors program. When asked about the program Williams said, “It’s something I love to do.”

Meet L&C Staff Member Greg Cash By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Greg Cash is originally from Stonington, Illinois which he considers his hometown. His title held here at Lewis and Clark is Assistant Director for Reference Services at Reid Memorial Library. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Communication that he received at Eastern Illinois University as well as a Master’s Degree of Library and Information Science that was received from the University of Illinois. Cash started employment at Lewis and Clark in Oct. 2007. He decided to seek employment at Lewis and Clark because of the potential opportunities and a variety of other factors. His prior career experience was in Television Production before he started employment in libraries. Cash enjoys helping faculty conduct historical research. Students should be interested in participating in what Reid Memorial Library has to offer because according to Cash “They do not have to navigate college on their own, we can teach them how to use library resources that will give them so much more than searching Google.” He considers his greatest strength to be the willingness to take the time to work with
Greg Cash students to find the resources they need and also to be a mentor to the library student workers. Unfortunately, the most challenging part of his job is getting students to come into the library to utilize resources. But the most rewarding part is being embedded into a class, so when students are working on a research paper/
Rene Knott Gives Inspiring Talk To L&C’s Future Broadcasters By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
Rene Knott has become a familiar face in different chairs on NewsChannel 5. A longtime sports director at KSDK turned morning show host on “Today In St. Louis,” Knott has run the gamut of the past few decades of St. Louis news. In his talk, where he stood under the praise angel inside the Reid Memorial Library on February 3, he expanded upon his past before media, his life before St. Louis, and what it takes to be an effective communicator, both on air and off. “If I can do it, you can do it,” said Rene
Knott, as he addressed a crowd mostly comprised of students participating in Lewis & Clark Community College (L&C)’s radio program. “I was a shy kid.” “I learned to speak clearly as if I was explaining the news to my mother,” Knott offered, as advice to the future media figures in the audience. “Confidence is crucial. If you talk calmly and confidently, you might be able to change someone’s mind.” “Broadcast journalism is a big deal now because there’s a lot of splintered factions out there; there’s
a need for the truth. There is nothing greater we owe the public than the truth itself.” The talk was a crisp 30 minutes of Knott recalling his steps towards becoming a host on Today In St. Louis. His long road began in Hollywood, Calif., which was part of why Knott was not particularly “into” hockey and baseball, the two sports that grip the St. Louis metro area year-round. “Coming from LA, basketball and football were it,” said Knott. “I had to learn an appreciation for baseball and hockey.”
When the talk turned into a Q&A session, Knott was asked what his favorite moment covering sports in his career has been. Knott was quick to point to his time in South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympics. “With just a laptop, camera and a TVU(Device used to stream to the station’s studio),” Knott acknowledged he was a “one man band” of sorts. “Covering sports that you don’t know about, talking to all the stars. It was a cool experience to be more of a fan. Eating food I didn’t usually eat,

She looks up to her mother and father as her role models. Williams definitely would recommend students to attend classes here for their general studies because it would be so much easier on them. Williams says she enjoys studying outside the nearby Adult Education department because it’s a nice, quiet place to study. In the future, once she has completed her Associate Degree here at L&C, she plans on furthering her education to a four-year university. She has not yet decided which university she would like to attend. Williams is a hilarious individual and lots of fun to be around. “For my future long-term goal I am planning to become an owner of my own company while being a Fashion Designer,” said Williams.

project he can be there from beginning to end. It’s a way to see the students grow and become lifelong learners. The proudest moment of Cash’s career so far was when he participated in a research project investigating the first planting of soybeans in the state of Illinois. It was an extensive project which culminated Aug. 2019 when the historical marker was placed. There was also an article about this research project published in the LCCC’s Discover Magazine. Cash is very honored to have achieved his number one goal of being a professional librarian and manager. “Because the need for information is constantly evolving, people working in the field of information science must stay relevant and evolve with it. It’s important that we stay current with the ways that students communicate and try to meet them where they are,” said Cash. Cash’s office is located inside the Reid Memorial Library and hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. His contact info: phone number is 618-468-4301 and email gcash@lc.edu

I was always looking for a McDonald’s” “When team USA beat Canada in hockey, that was one of the biggest moments in sports I’ve been around, and I’ve seen world series championships and the (St. Louis Blues’) Stanley Cup championship.” Knott also touched on his struggles and the notso-pretty parts of being a travelling newsman. When he first moved to St. Louis, in 2004, his father succumbed to cancer. Knott was just starting as KSDK sports director, and was far away from his family.
“The hardest part is finding comfort in new people and finding bonds.” Juxtaposed underneath a large stained glass window depicting a praise angel in the cathedral-like Reid Memorial Library, Rene Knott left the media hopefuls in attendance with the advice of confidence. “You have to believe in you to do this. I don’t know what your goals in life are, but all of them are reachable. When you walk out of this room, believe in yourself. If you question yourself, you’ve lost.”

Judge Veronica Armouti, Life Leading Into Her Career By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
In the life of Judge Veronica Armouti, there has been a proven story of success and determination. She decided, no matter what obstacles she had to get through in life, she would get where she is currently at in her career. Judge Armouti was able to conquer and achieve her educational goals, throughout her years while being a college student. Armouti admitted to being one of those individuals who had to start from the bottom by cleaning toilets. Of course, that was not what she wanted to do as a career, so instead of complaining about her work, she decided while working she would indeed go to school. Over the years she progressed
and showed many people how valuable she is and the accomplishments she has completed throughout her career. “It doesn’t matter where you start; it’s about the end game,” said Armouti. During her childhood years, she grew up in Madison and Venice, Illinois., until she was in sixth grade, when her family decided to move to Alton, Illinois. Currently, she is a resident of Edwardsville, Illinois., where she has been for the past 26 years. Throughout her grade school years of education, she was always a public school student, which did not bother her one bit because she was hungry for knowledge.

Back in 1986, Armouti earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. In 1997, she earned her Juris Doctor Degree, which
is a graduate-entry professional degree in law and one of several Doctor of Law Degrees from Saint Louis University located in St. Louis, Missouri. During her years in college, she met a lot
of people. Conversing with others has always been beneficial to her. While Armouti worked full-time, she attended classes at night for law school as a nontraditional law student. She was also married with children. After Armouti graduated, she worked at a company by the name HeplerBroom where she was able to work on property damage, medical malpractice, personal injury and products liability cases. Following employment at HeplerBroom, she joined Sandberg Phoenix & Von Gontard as an associate attorney, where she focused on administrative law cases, medical malpractice, personal injury and property damage cases.
In 2019, Armouti was appointed associate judge in the administrative office of the Illinois Courts in the Third Judicial Circuit, where Madison and Bond Counties are included. One of her most self admired accomplishments in her life was gaining a career advancement from being a lawyer to becoming a judge. “It’s not an easy process and there’s lots of competition,” said Armouti. Armouti highly recommends current college students that are considering coming into her field of work to always have someone by their side, such as a mentor who has encouragement and leadership qualities.
A4 The Bridge Recognizes Black History L&C Art Show Celebrates Black Artists By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
This year’s Art Show, presented by numerous Lewis and Clark African American students in recognition of Black History Month was a great success. It was a time for all students from many different cultural backgrounds to come together and explore the art work of fellow students. Last year’s Black Art Show, which was thought of by student Anthony Brown, went very well. He decided to engage in having this year’s event as well. “The art show was amazing. I especially loved the painting ‘Bewitched.’ I am very impressed and proud of my fellow students today,” said student Ashtyn Britt. It was a time for black students to bring out their cultural thoughts through creating many pieces of artwork. Along with the artwork were reading transcripts to go along with them, informing viewers of the thoughts of the artists on exactly what inspired them to make the art they created. “Our hair is like a tree in the way it grows; we are connected to nature,” said student Kendra Griggs, who is also known as Ping the
Artist. “Girl with the ‘Fro” was a piece of artwork presented by student Jada Lawson. “I was inspired by beauty that I don’t see much of in today’s world. The kind of beauty that is sadly rare. Yet, it is there. From time to time we see people who resemble this and finally say ‘about time,” said Lawson. Apart from the impressive showcase of artwork, there were students who stood up to speak about their artwork, speaking from their hearts about what exactly inspires them in life. They concluded with what made them decide on the piece of artwork they created. “Tyler the Creator” was a piece presented by student Tahje West. ‘Alkebulah,’ which is the birthplace of mankind and Aboriginal American is a work of art created by student Noah Black. When student Tyreka Lawerence was asked what she thought of the art show, she said, “Unique.” A drawing named “Still I Rise” by student Vinnie Winters stood out the most to this reporter, because it was a drawing without paint
and in her reading transcript it stated, “I was inspired to sketch this picture when going through tough times. The saying ‘still I rise’ speaks 1000 words to me, like even when you’re at your lowest you have nowhere to go but up. The birds symbolize freedom, grace and hope. The prayer hands signify faith because I would be nowhere without the grace of God.” Once students finished viewing the multiple pieces of art, they were given a raffle ticket for a good southern soul food dinner, as well

as Welch’s Sparkling Grape Juice. The dinner included fried chicken, greens, baked macaroni and cheese, gumbo with shrimp and rice, and sweet potato pie and cornbread. “I think it’s a really good idea for this Black Art Show, but I think it would be better to have it in a bigger room, like Hatheway, for a longer period of time because I know people have class, like myself,” said student Diamond Wagner, who presented “Black By Popular Demand” piece of art and a dragon sculpture of ceramic and glaze.

Beyond the March Panel Discussion 2020 By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
This cultural event took place in the staff/ faculty dining room
inside Reid Cafe at including sandwichL&C. Students were es, chips and beveragserved refreshments es from Coordinator of Student Activities Jared Hennings. There were students of multiple cultural racial backgrounds who were in attendance and talked back and forth with speaker Political Science Professor Mario Love, as well as Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator Tandra Taylor, about topics of Systemic Racism and the effects it has on society today. Taylor said, “There is a relationship between poverty and crime, considering the issues minorities face with health, education and Mario Love speaking at Beyond the March Photo by David Tupper. housing inequity.”
A large crowd actively listens at Beyond the March.

While Professor Love took the lead of the discussion and considered himself to be the “devil’s advocate.” In the background, a slideshow of different AfricanAmerican males and females in today’s society was displayed. The majority of them were famous in the slide show, such as actor Denzel Washington, actress and singer Beyoncé and Rapper 50 Cent, etc. Professor Love was able to debate and voice his opinion and statistics back and forth with students on what were their very own personal thoughts of systematic racism.
Lashay Trazier gives a riveting example from her life.

Here are just a few anonymous student responses from the multiple topics discussed: “I don’t think we should be judges on our past because I never owned slaves and neither did my parents,” and “Believes all minorities face it. He admits that at this time in his life he is learning more about systemic racism.” The outlying issue with “structural racism” was a dynamic topic for all students in attendance to share their thoughts and concerns with. A Youtube video was shown of a speaker in a debate topic on how back in the 1980’s until now AfricanAmericans addicted to crack cocaine were given jail sentences. But in the world we currently live in, opioid users who are addicted tend to, majority of the time, be Caucasians receiving only treatment facilities. The comparison was made amongst the fact of popular times for drug usage and why African-Americans get admitted into treatment facilities instead of jail cells. Topics about the high percent of AfricanAmerican men currently behind bars were also discussed during this time.
Campus Talks
Also, there was a city comparison discussion about Granite City, Illinois. vs. East Saint Louis, and the issues both of these cities may face as well. Other cities located nearby were also mentioned and discussed. Professor Love also had given everyone in attendance handouts of topics in regard to the NAACP (National Association For The Advancement of Colored People) to read. The handout was about sentencing reform, which NAACP seeks to eliminate harsh and unfair sentencing practices that are responsible for mass incarceration and racial disparities in the prison system. The NAACP supports an increase in trust and public safety by advancing effective law enforcement practices and how they are committed to the restoration of the voting rights of formerly incarcerated people and the removal of barriers to employment, as well as being committed to elevating the voices of crime victim survivors in order to identify and advance systematic breakdowns existing in the criminal justice system that perpetuate crime in regard to survivors of crime.

African Dance Ensemble Performs in Reid Cafe By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
The African Ensemble Dance group performed here at Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) inside of the Reid Cafe. Before performing, Director of Organization Sylvester Lee, also known as “Sunshine,” who has experienced 41 years of teaching in East St. Louis, Illinois, said, “The dance group was designed in Haiti.” This group played drums while having dancers come out to dance to the tune of the drums. The dancers were dressed in African clothing coming from places such as Ghana, Africa. Spotlight of the audience consisted of a lot of children from the Children’s Tribe along with their teachers visiting here on campus. L&C students stopped by while passing for classes to view the event. Christine Simmons, who was in the audience said, “A great show, [I] wish [more] minorities would have attended more and a great cultural experience.” According to the dance ensemble’s group website, www.sunshineculturalartscenter.org , the Sunshine
Cultural Arts Center is a community of committed teachers, leaders, volunteers, mentors and community development professionals dedicated to the advancement and revitalization of the Metro East area. Promoting culture, building stronger communities, promoting healthy growth and development, as well as being able to develop children as ambassadors, are based solely on their core values. “It’s a good thing to teach the children about heritage,” said L&C student LaShay Frazier. Toward the end of the event, the children from the Children’s Tribe, along with their teachers as well as Student Coordinator Activities Jared Hennings, were given a chance to dance along on stage with the dance group, which they seemed to have enjoyed. This event was a tribute to Black History Month, as well as expanding knowledge of the African Ensemble Dance group cultural background. “Sunshine” said, “Everything has a reason and a purpose.”

Politically Correct Bedtime Stories: A Millennial’s Guide to Laughing at Yourself By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Over the last few years, there has definitely been a rise in being politically correct due to the political climate change. While there are some aspects with which I can agree and understand about political correctness, I do also know how to take a joke. “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories” are by far not
only a great joke, but an entire book’s worth of them. The stories are written by James Finn Garner, a satirical writer in Chicago. There are a few editions of the “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories,” including “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories,” “Once Upon a More Enlightened Time: More Politically
Correct Bedtime Stories,” “Politically Correct Holiday Stories: For an Enlightened Yuletide Season” and “Politically Correct: The Ultimate Storybook.” These stories take the classic fairy tales we all know and love such as Cinderella, Rumplestilskin, The Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White,
The Frog Prince, Jack and the Beanstalk, and so many more and twist them into a modern-day Tumblr-obsessed SJW dream. Only in such a fever dream story could the Emperor’s New Clothes end up with a nudist colony, or that Cinderella could end with all the men killing each other while the women open a clothing
store with comfortable and practical clothing for women. While the stories definitely flip the original fairy tales on their head, it is obviously done in good fun and is still delightful to read, even as an adult. If you enjoy satire in the most extreme, these are definitely the books for you. I highly recommend the book to
everyone, both who see themselves as politically correct or not, because even for those who would like the world to be as it is in the stories, it does not hurt to laugh at yourself once in a while. All the “Politically Correct Bedtime Stories” are currently available for purchase on Amazon. com.

The Season 3 of the Witch By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Netflix’s series “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” has returned and is more exciting than ever before. In this season, we get to see Sabrina finally follow her destiny and take the throne as Queen of Hell while also trying to maintain a normal life as a teenager. It is especially interesting as she decides to change some of the arrangements in Hell, much to the disapproval of the higher-ranked Lords of Hell who would prefer someone else in charge. Things develop for her friends during this season, such as Theo finding a relationship with a Pagan Hobogoblin with super speed. It is also worth noting how Roz and Harvey’s relationship seems to be foreshadowed to end, when Harvey attempts to show his true love for Roz and it is not accepted, meaning he loves someone else more. Sabrina and Nick also deal with some intense issues, as we see Nick struggle with PTSD and addictions after hosting the devil inside his body in
order to save Sabrina. The situation becomes incredibly complicated between the two of them until they finally decide to break it off, and Sabrina makes the effort to move on. Things are also a bit complicated with Sabrina’s aunts, one of whom is newly engaged and yearns to live her own life away from her sister. Meanwhile, the other is in distress as the new leader of the cult and trying to find a new source of power for the witches to gain power from. It is especially interesting to note the various sources of magic they attempt to turn to, and how informative of other cultures the show can sometimes be. Hopefully, the writers know what they are doing and figure out how to manage the time paradox as discussed at the end of Part 3. There will be a part 4 of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” but no release date has been provided yet. I do not know about all of you, but I am sincerely hoping that they will release it right in time for Halloween later this year.
Dickinson: Finding the Modern Comedy Within the Traditional Tragedy By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Emily Dickinson wrote nearly 2,000 poems in her lifetime discussing the beauty of death, but it was not until recently that someone decided to shine a positive light on this amazing genius who had been far ahead of her time. Recently, the new streaming service Apple+ showed the first season of ”Dickinson,” a show loosely based on what is known of Emily Dickinson’s life during the pre-Civil war era. However, what makes this show particularly wonderful, is the fact that despite the setting and costuming being accurate to the time period the real Emily Dickinson lived in, the music and everyone’s speech patterns are modernized including slang. The story stars Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Dickinson, Ella Hunt as Sue Gilbert, Adrian Enscoe as Austin Dickinson, Anna Baryshnikov as Lavinia Dickinson, Jane Krakowski as Mrs. Dickinson, Toby Huss as Mr. Dickinson, and
Wiz Khalifa as Death. The story follows Emily Dickinson wishing to become a published writer dealing with the conflicts of being in love with her brother’s fiance, as well as facing a misunderstanding family and a sexist society. The setting also takes a more comedic approach to the hard issues being tackled in the story, while also maintaining the ability to take the subject matter seriously. With discussions of immigration, race, women’s rights, finding one’s self and LGBTQ+ representation, “Dickinson” is a delightful show that I never knew how much I would need or love until after I binge-watched it. While there are parts of the show that are definitely inaccurate to history, the story being told was enticing and delightful. I could not emphasize enough to watch and enjoy it as much as I have. “Dickinson” has been renewed for a second season, but Apple+ has not released a date for the second season yet.
You Seriously Have to Read An Article Because You Didn’t Watch Shameless Season 10? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Another year, another season of “Shameless” that you all clearly forgot to watch. Well, lucky for you all, I did watch it and am able to once again keep you caught up. However, I recommend you get a subscription to Showtime for next year because this show is amazing, and has been renewed for only one more and final season. Keep in mind, the rest of this article will contain major spoilers. First up is the fact that Fiona is not in this season, and there has been barely any word about her or her whereabouts this season. Hopefully, wherever Fiona is, she is making decent life decisions and not repeating her toxic patterns again. Similarly, Liam did not have very much going on during this season either. Liam tries to do a bit of self-discovery as a person of color in the show, but that storyline very quickly was cut off and resolved without much actual resolution. For the rest of the season, he simply serves to be a talent agent for one of his friends. Frank is also a bit preoccupied for most of the season, first having to lose his best friend and then be seduced and tortured by the girlfriend of a man he caused to be sent to prison. The series left off with Frank living in the mansion of the girlfriend while she is on vacation, and shares the space with her gardener, who is also squatting there. Next is Debbie, who has had a wild time this season. Debbie has wasted the majority of the money left behind by Fiona before finding out her daughter’s estranged father passed away and had to be sneaky to fight for his death benefits for their daughter. Afterward, Debbie helps lead a strike for her and her fellow welders which left her unemployed for most of the season. Then,

statutory rape. Heaven only knows what the writers have planned for her during the final season. Next would be Ian, who is finally released from prison this season alongside his on-again-off-againboyfriend, Mickey Milkovich. The two deal with living on parole, especially because their corrupt parole officer named Paula, played by the talented Rachel Dratch, is making their lives significantly worse. Once Paula is murdered by another parolee, the subject of the two getting married comes up. However, when push comes to shove, Ian backs out and Mickey proceeds to break up with him for a few episodes and use a new man to make Ian jealous. It works incredibly well, and the two get officially engaged and have a proper wedding. Mickey’s homophobic father is not pleased with this, and burns down their original venue, and attempts to murder them twice by the end of the season. I am personally excited to see the two as a married couple during the final season. Last, we have Lip, who is having a hard time adjusting to fatherhood. Tami, his girlfriend, is not as good at being a mother as Lip is at being a father, which causes a lot of friction between the couple. Next, the two are offered a free home in Milwaukee, and at first, it seems that they will indeed move into the nice home with their son, until Lip decides to buy a house in the South Side without consulting Tami. Things hit a low point when Tami leaves with their son being enraged by Lip’s decision, and Lip succumbs to his alcoholism and has his first drink in quite some time. I hope the final season shows him reclaiming his sobriety and figuring out how to make things work better with Tami in order to have a good life.

The Turning is a Mind-Boggling Mess By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
“The Turning,” which was released on Jan. 24, is a film that left me confused when I saw it in theaters, but overall, I think the film is not well executed. The film is a great example of the “January horror film,” if I have ever seen one. The film is based on the 1898 novella “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James. The film is written by Carey and Chad Hayes, who are most well known for “The Conjuring” and the 2005 version of “House of Wax.” The film is directed by Floria Sigismondi, an Italian-American director who directed the rock biopic “The Runaways.” The film stars Mackenzie Davis as Kate, a governess in the 1990s, which is a very rare position, to say the least. Finn Wolfhard plays Miles, a boy who was expelled from his boarding school because he smashed a student’s head in. His new band, “The Aubreys,” also contributed a song to the soundtrack. The film, as mentioned, is set in the 90s, but it did not need to be. The film introduced its setting by showing a TV with a newscast of Kurt Cobain’s death. They most likely did the period piece thing to not have an easy out for Kate. She could have just called her roommate and said, “Hey, I can’t do
The film is somewhat a psychological thriller, where she might have lost her grip on reality. It was not executed that well, though. It has some foreshadowing, where she visited her mother, who is somewhat delusional and paints in a mental hospital’s pool. Some more is when the caretaker, Mrs. Grose, quips that Kate is lucky that it is not genetic after she got some art from her mother. A major problem with the movie is its ending, or lack thereof. The film just ends after a fake-out ending (which there were a lot of fakeouts in the movie). The film then cuts to credits. It was like they ran out of money for the ending, so they just slapped the credits on at the last minute. This film is a lot like the king of bad January horror films, 2012’s “The Devil Inside,” which just cuts to a website link after a car wreck. The films ending made me think for a little bit about the film before landThe Turning poster. ing on my current opinion. Photo via Wikipedia. This film is an overall mess, which does not really know if it is trying to be a psychological thriller or this job and the house might be haunted, can you a ghost flick. Nudge, By Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
If you are looking to read about being able to improve decisions in life based on happiness, health and wealth, “Nudge” by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein is definitely the answer to what you are in search of. Your behavior is a definite reflection of who you are as a person. Once you have realized you would like to make a difference in your life, and you are willing to read and take notes, by all means, this is the accurate guideline to do so by reading for knowledge in this novel. ”Nudge” is a concept in behavioral economics, political theory and behavioral science, which proposes positive reinforcement and indirect suggestions, as well as many different ways to influence the behavior and decision making of individuals and/or groups. One of the first things mentioned is libertarian paternalism, which is a person who believes in the doctrine of free will. More so like a father who helps. An example of libertarian paternalism includes requiring shops to place soda and cigarettes at the back of the store rather than near checkout stands. One can still “choose” to buy soda or cigarettes, but one is not tempted to do so. This ties into choice architecture, which is the actual design of the different ways in which choices can be presented. Generally, Wikipedia is not always safe to use, while knowing that choice is about selection and architecture is about building. It can be assumed that Wikipedia’s definition of “the actual design of the different ways.” An example of choice architecture would

be putting candy and magazines at the checkout in order to encourage a person to make an impulse decision while waiting in the checkout line. Before actually making the decisions, whether they are financial, health reasons, whether you choose to buy a home, improve your credit score, get into the stock markets, and make decisions on your 401(k) plan with your employer, someone has already chosen “how” to guide you through choice architecture. Reading “Nudge” and gaining knowledge at the exact same time of knowing the true benefits of choosing a tremendous 401(k) plan in the future, and how important it is to stay with your employer for a very lengthy time, it is not good at all to go working multiple different jobs. Once you have reached a certain age in life, it may seem as if you have waited too late in life to decide on a 401(k) plan that best suits you as an individual/family. There is a design that can be presented to consumers in multiple ways through choice architecture. The impact in this assists consumers within decision making, by nudging consumers into making certain choices. In my opinion, overall, when you think about the choice architecture of libertarian paternalists, they are deciding what they think is best for us. I would consider this novel a very excellent book that is a complex read. You have to be willing to put your mind to work while reading, as well as finding the value of exactly what is offered to us in this world we all reside in today.

Grooving to Local Jam Band Aaron Kamm and the One Drops’ Album The Bomb and the Beast By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
Hailing from St. Louis MO (although I’ve heard it was originally Edwardsville) local jam band Aaron Kamm and the One Drops has developed quite a following over the last several years. I myself have seen them more than a handful of times and have absolutely never been disappointed. With incredibly soulful vocals, improvisational jams, reggae flavors and what some call Mississippi River blues, these guys unleash a storm of delightful grooves that always gets the crowd moving. This band has recorded four different studio albums over the years, and now we are going to dive into my personal favorite; “The Bomb and the Beast.” In our first song “Razors Edge” we get a real taste for that reggae tunage that Aaron and his One Drops deal out. The lyrics talk of how sometimes we might feel as if we are walking along the razor’s edge of a knife, so they then encourage us to slow down take life as easy as the melodies they put out. “I will be free from the burning/ I will be free from destruction/ I will be free from the
hurt and/ I will be free from corruption/ I will be free from the pain .../ Please remember my name …” Next Aaron Kamm picks it up with “Rooftop.” A song that’s more down and dirty than the previous, obtaining that old school blues sound that is meant to boogie to. We get to hear some solidly placed cowbells which is always a joy, and the whole band has a great breakdown and jam session. Moving on we get back to another more reggae-esqe little love diddy in “Steely Train.” This song makes you want to bob and sway along as you sing the delightful poetically written and sung vocals. This is a great tune through and through, but the vocals really shine, especially in one of the mini breakdowns when Aaron Kamm says. “If you rid yourself of worry when I tell ya/ Baby darling, gonna help ya self/ Oh ya/ If you rid yourself of worry/ When I tell ya baby darling/ You’d have someone else/ Oh ya.” Then we get swung back into the down dirty blues again with
“So Much Love.” Much like “Rooftop,” but standing strong on its own this groovy jam is obviously meant to get the body moving. “Yeah I’m going to a party/ I’m gonna get loose/ Better give me lil something/ Better give me that juice.” Once again Aaron Kamm and the One Drops pull a 180 on us and put us back into the reggae realm with “Sensi.” I must say that while I find all of these songs to be memorable and forever playlist worthy, this will probably be one of the first to get stuck in your head. “Phr” gets you back on your feet because as they say in the song. “Yes I need my reggae, reggae, reggae every day.” Now chill down again and listen to probably the most mystical sounding track, “Sunshine.” Next Aaron Kamm and the One Drops put the “Ocean” in our ears. Which between that song “Mind World” and “Fire” I really don’t know which one I would say is my favorite from this album, but it is most likely one of these three. Somewhere in
between you will listen to the groovy tale of “Boy Rude,” the hardest most rockin blues jam “Do Some Good” and the final track that I would define as illustrative audio, “Police.” If you are anything like me you will be singing along with this whole album after your first listen. Aaron Kamm and the One Drops is a fantastic gem of a local band, and if you can’t go see them soon, start out with this album and GET GROOVING.

Warm Soda’s RISE Art Show Wows Crowd By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
The third annual RISE Art Showcase opened on Friday, Feb. 7. at the Jacoby Arts Center in Downtown Alton. The art show is being run by Jacoby and Warm Soda Magazine, who describes themselves as a “crispy, surprising carbonated gulp of delicious art, music, and culture around the Greater Riverbend area and the Greater St. Louis area.” The art show, which showed works from Greater St. Louis area artists of color, showcased works
from paintings, photography, sculptures and even jewelry. The opening ceremony had music and poetry. Most of the event, however, was highlighted by artist talks. The first artist, Yvonne Osei, discussed her photography series “Here to Stay” from 2017. The photography mixed models with textiles which she designed. Another photographer, Matt Meyer, told about how he took photos of Havana, Cuba in 2017. An artist who goes by Ori
Tala documented their art which involved their PTSD from a tragic experience and their two-spirit identification. Anthony Brown, an L&C student who makes art with markers and goes on Instagram as crispy_ demon, describes the art show, which his piece “AndromedaThe Spirit of Encouragement” is being shown, described as an exciting “once in a lifetime experience.” Anthony Bartley, an artist who goes under the moniker Faded
Royalty, showed his art in which his motif is blank eyes, which are supposed to indicate mental health issues. Alvin J Lewis, drew mostly portraits, with “Untitled” being a portrait of his sister giving a cheerful expression, and “Shooter,” showing a man taking a camera out of his waistband. The art show is still going on until March 4, and Rise Fest, which is a local music and art showcase, will be happening at Jacoby on Feb. 22. Tickets will be $5.
On Feb. 26, 2020, Black Theatre Workshop Touring Ensemble presented “Black In My Day” by students from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville (SIUE), which is directed by Kathryn Bentley here at Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) inside of the Benjamin Godfrey Chapel. This event was considered as part of the conclusion of Black History Month here on campus. Coordinator of Student Activities Jared Hennings said, “I think theater is just powerful.” These students come here to campus from SIUE yearly in honor of Black History Month
to present the different issues in society black individuals deal with among their peers. The audience in attendance was students from Children’s Tribe, Roxana High School and Alton High School, etc. The group was a great cultural diversity of students. According to Black Theatre Workshop Touring Ensemble, since the 19th century black people have been stereotyped due to the color of their skin. They considered it very difficult being African American by prejudiced individuals. The touring ensemble workshop discussed topics on “Black Lives Matter,” which is an
international activist movement, originating in the African American community, that campaigns against violence and systematic racism toward black people. Students from SIUE also discussed in performance the examples of arguments black individuals may face against other people who are racist. They also informed the audience of the Trayvon Martin killing. Due to Trayvon wearing a dark colored hoodie while walking down the street at night time, he was considered a threat to his killer George Zimmerman. He was shot and killed on Feb. 26, 2012 in Sanford, Fl., all because he was wearing a

Alton’s Dilapidated Grand Theater to be Restored By Gary Chapman gchapman@lc.edu
The Grand Theater, located at 230 Market St., is going to be receiving a renovation, thanks to AltonWorks, a firm that is managing a $75 million revitalization plan by philanthropists Jayne and John Simmons. The Grand was originally the Biograph Theater in 1909 and then renamed to the Habit Theater in 1914. The Grand officially opened in December 1920 and was mostly used for vaudeville acts. In 1924, the theater was bought out by William Sauvage, who was the former mayor of Alton and had a small monopoly of theaters according to Meghan Bellito and Cinema Treasures. Bellito also added that during Sauvage’s run, they would only show the higher end types of movies. Cinema Treasures also added that the last showing was in 1977, with a double feature of Ralph Bakshi films, 1973’s “Heavy Traffic” and 1974’s “The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat.” The theater closed due to the advent of television reducing ticket sales. Susan Ryan stated that the Grand “will be transformed into a state-of-theart, multi-use music and entertainment

combination of public and private lots and street parking.” The theater, Ryan claimed, “will focus on extraordinary site lines for every seat so guests will always have a great view of the entertainment.” The venue will be open in the first
quarter of 2021, but a party to celebrate 100 years of the venue and to show progress will happen on Dec. 4. The theater’s lineup will be announced in the fall. This will be a step toward making Alton the entertainment Mecca it once was.

Soccer Success, Basketball Victories Highlight Blazer Day 2020
B
By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
lazer Day 2020 was quite a special occasion. Marked not only with a Trailblazer basketball doubleheader, but with a long-due tribute to the women’s soccer team, who made it to the NJCAA Division I semifinals last November. The women of the soccer team and head coach Tim Rooney were honored at halftime of the women’s basketball game. Rooney and goalkeeper Mercedes King both addressed the crowd during the ceremony. “They were unbelievable this year.” Rooney boasted, “This is, without a doubt, one of the best teams I’ve ever had. Those are big words coming from Tim Rooney, who’s coached national champions with the Trailblazer women and several other great NJCAA tournament runs with both women’s and men’s teams of the past. Goalkeeper Mercedes King, and likely the whole of the Trailblazer soccer side, give plenty of the credit to Rooney, and Lewis & Clark as a whole for their success as well. “We wish this was a four-year school.” King said. “The community is great, we love the soccer program. Tim Rooney is a god.”
This year’s soccer standout was undoubtedly Boitumelo Rabale. As I gushed during the soccer season, Rabale is one of the best women’s soccer players at any collegiate level. NJCAA recognized that fact (and her outrageous goals and points totals) and named her the NJCAA Women’s Player Of The Year. Not to dampen the mood following the celebration, the women’s basketball Trailblazers battled their way to a 7970 win over Parkland, their 12th this season. Blazer Day festivities continued in the second half of the basketball doubleheader. A somewhat controversial free throw contest saw Trailblazer point guard Miata Borders win, much to the chagrin of her teammate Vinnie Winters. Blazer Day of course would not be complete without the dog of the hour, and L&C’s Newfie mascot Blazer was on hand entertaining those who came out to Riverbend Arena with their affable-yet-goofy antics. T-shirts were tossed, free food was consumed (rather quickly I might add), and a 110-97 Trailblazer men’s basketball victory sent everyone home happy, except for the Lake Land Lakers.

Roller Derby and Wrestling Collide For “Jams And Slams”
F
By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
or the first time in the St. Louis area, pro wrestling and roller derby converged for one action-packed night at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin. The event, aptly titled “Jams and Slams”, brought Arch Rival Roller Derby (ARCH) and Dynamo Pro Wrestling under one roof on Feb. 1. Leading off the high-impact entertainment was the roller derby game, held between Arch Rival Roller Derby’s Smashinistas and the Stunt Devils. Both teams compete in ARCH’s STL area league, and this contest was a regular season league game. For those less familiar with the sport of roller derby, points are scored
by jammers and pivots, while blockers only skate to keep jammers from scoring. Play is broken into two-minute “jams”, where the jammers of each team attempt to pass the other skaters. A jammer scores a point for their team for each opposition player they pass on a lap. The Smashinistas showed their strength early and often in this one, and got out to an early lead and never looked back. Despite the efforts of Stunt Devils MVP blocker, Rock Slobster, the affectionately nicknamed Smashies jammers, Skullpix and Skeevie Nix, found inroads around the track all night. The Smashinistas owned the night,
winning by the resounding score of 266-120. With the win, the Smashinistas are within smelling distance of a berth in April’s trophy game, the ARCH league championship. Conversely, the loss for the Stunt Devils means they have some fighting to do if they want to claw up the ARCH standings. Once the mayhem on the track wrapped up, the attention of the near thousand ravenous derby and wrestling fans in attendance shifted toward the wrestling ring situated on the end of the roller rink. Dynamo Pro’s half of the evening kicked off with a bang, featuring a heated grudge match. Heavyweight

champion “Lights Out” Adrian Surge squared off with Dynamo Pro D1 Champion Camaro Jackson. Jackson showed why he is a threat to Surge’s heavyweight crown, and gave the long-time Dynamo Pro crowd favorite more than he could handle. In the end, it was Adrian Surge who ended up “lights out”, Camaro Jackson winning the match with a powerful pedigree to the pleasure of the huge crowd. CJ Shine received a warm reception from the crowd as his “Uptown Funk” entrance music boomed over the sound system at Midwest Sport Hockey. His opponent, named just “The Snitch”, did not receive such a pleasant welcome after he called the roller derby competitors “a bunch of nerds skating in circles.” Shine defeated The Snitch to the joy of the fans gathered around the ring. Arch City Mercenary Jimmi LaFleur sealed a confident victory over OuTKast in the third match of the evening. The crowd was eager for the main event, a Dynamo Pro Women’s championship bout between defending champ Rahne Victoria and challenger Hayley Shadows. “The Empress of Evil”,

Rahne Victoria’s fans were vocal early. A chant of “EVIL. EVIL. EVIL.” could be heard from the bar on the complete other side of the building. “Barbie Killer” Hayley Shadows may be a diabolical foe, but Victoria is no Barbie doll. The champ defended her Dynamo Pro Women’s title, and closed out a great evening at Jams and Slams. With this historic,
first-ever collaboration in the books, both Arch Rival Roller Derby and Dynamo Pro Wrestling both have a big 2020 in store. Arch Rival Roller Derby is in the heat of their local season, with the Smashinistas looking poised to take the title. With Dynamo Pro’s heavyweight champ reeling from a loss, the face of the company might be in danger of losing his crown.

Fledgling Football’s Growing Pains By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
Two weeks into the inaugural season, Vince McMahon’s rebooted XFL is trying many new approaches to the sport, both on field and off. One thing they cannot change, unfortunately, is the level of play in what is ultimately a minor league of football. That is not to overlook what is good in this new XFL. The broadcast changes, most notably hearing officials during reviews and mentioning betting (albeit in a very simplistic way), are changes that I definitely see becoming the norm for NFL and NCAA football broadcasts in the coming seasons. Hearing play calls between coaches and players on-field during broadcasts has received mixed to negative reviews from those in football media and fans alike. Unless you are the most
diehard of a football fan or a former player, you likely will not understand the lingo used to describe certain schemes or play calls. On the field, the kickoffs that still kind of look weird at first glance do produce a more exciting version of the traditional football kickoff. Returners are given more opportunity to return the ball and space to build speed, and as of this writing there still has not been an XFL kickoff returned for a touchdown, which shows that the setup is balanced enough for defenses to still make the stop. Unfortunately, the lack of kickoff returns for touchdowns may be due to the offensive struggles that have somewhat plagued the XFL early on. While this intrepid reporter would say the XFL has
What fans and skeptics alike can look for as the first season heats up is if those offenses can find their footing, or if the coaching staff of the XFL alter their plans to better suit the pieces they have. I would compare the current XFL product to that of middling to poor college football. If the XFL offenses can figure out how to play within themselves they could have a really fun league. The play will likely have to improve if the league is to expect to sell their goal of 15 to 20 thousand tickets per game, primarily in all markets that are not home to the St. Louis BattleHawks. In places where there is already an NFL franchise, people Battlehawks punter Marquette King. are not going to go out of had better offensive pro- Football, the league’s of- their way to watch a bad duction in its early stag- fenses still struggle to football product. es than 2019’s short-lived put together consistent Because of St. Louis’ Alliance of American performances. peculiar status as the one
city that 1) only has an XFL team and 2) recently lost its NFL team, tickets have flown out of the virtual and physical box office. As of this writing in the week leading up to the BattleHawks home opener at The Dome, the cheapest ticket you can find to get into XFL’s St. Louis debut is $110 on Ticketmaster, after fees. For those who were looking to buy BattleHawks tickets, I would suggest waiting until the polish comes off a bit to know what you are really paying for. Team play will likely be better later in the season, BattleHawk fever will theoretically subside, and it will not cost a small fortune to get in The Dome for a game. It is a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon, but it is still minor league football.
Feeling BattleHawk Fever By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
It might be early days of the XFL, but St. Louis has not even needed to see a home game to fall in love with their BattleHawks. The first home game is sold out, with a crowd of over twenty thousand expected to fill (the lower bowl of) The Dome for football for the first time since the Rams’ final home game before departing for Los Angeles. A nice but unimportant detail of BattleHawk fever: the BattleHawks themselves have looked like one of the more impressive teams in XFL early on. Jordan Ta’amu has looked explosive through the air and on the ground in offensive coordinator Chuck Long’s Air Raid system. The BattleHawk defense looks strong, but cannot truly be evaluated yet. Week one, the defense held the Dallas Renegades without a touchdown, and week two, they faced the league’s most electrifying offense in the Houston Roughnecks. Without question the main point of improvement for our beloved BattleHawks is stopping the careless penalties that have
kneecapped the offense this season. In the opening two games the BattleHawks have given up 139 penalty yards, while their opponents have given up a combined 34. But this is not about the BattleHawks on the field. This is about BattleHawk fever, an entity that potentially may never be affected by the actual play of the football team. Because of St. Louis’ peculiar status as the one city that 1) only has an XFL team and 2) recently lost its NFL team, merchandise and tickets have been selling like hotcakes. BattleHawks jerseys are flying off both the virtual and physical shelves, with replica jerseys sold out for months before the team’s home opener. BattleHawk fever is truly gripping the city and greater St. Louis metropolitan area. Football fans, and those who are simply bored on weekend afternoons without Cardinals baseball, are gravitating toward the city’s newest professional sports franchise. The BattleHawks opening game drew big ratings in St. Louis, and 2.5 million people watched across the

Fifty percent of my purchase was to make XFL-related posts online while wearing it, but the other fifty percent is purely due to BattleHawk fever. I searched for weeks for this hat; it had become my white whale. I do not collect things generally, but once I found a BattleHawks hat at West County Center, I felt like I had tracked down a limited edition toy. I was so excited to buy the hat that I forgot to use my Lids membership to get 10 percent off. Blinded by my own thrill, seeing that beautiful BattleHawk blue and silver emblazoned across the front of a ‘47 Brand cap. With my lovely sideline BattleHawks cap, I am ready to be a superfan of St. Louis’ latest pro sports entry. What the Heck is Roller Derby? By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
This month’s edition of Better Know A Sport serves as an addendum to a report found elsewhere in this very sports section. I had the pleasure of taking in the sport of roller derby for the very first time on Feb. 1, as I attended Arch Rival Roller Derby and Dynamo Pro Wrestling’s “Jams And Slams” event, where roller derby and pro wrestling came together for a night of hard-hitting, fast-skating action.
A history To know the complete history of roller derby, you have to start with the main equipment source: roller skates. Roller skates began to be mass-produced in America in the 1880s, and roller skating’s popularity at the time was skyrocketing. Endurance racing on roller skates was held on flat and banked tracks, and fans loved watching the competitors crash, slip and fall. “Derby” was coined to refer to these races in the early 1900s. Rules were changed to these endurance races to refine the scoring mechanics, and to increase the contact and physicality of the sport. Roller derby became a televised sport before television viewership was truly widespread. TV exposure saw derby crowds grow and grow, even to the point where the National Roller Derby League sold out Madison Square Garden for a week of playoffs. Roller derby waned in popularity as televised attempts were poorly packaged, and the sport struggled to maintain a following. “Professional” roller derby, at least, roller derby sold as a professional product, largely died when the TV deals stopped coming in.
A rebirth A “modern revival” of roller derby has taken place over the past 15 to 20 years. People, largely women, have reclaimed derby as an amateur sport, forming
teams, leagues, and governing bodies that span the globe. For example, St. Louis’ own Arch Rival Roller Derby fields a four-team local league, and travelling squads that compete all over. There are estimates of over two thousand amateur roller derby leagues worldwide, and worldwide is not a misnomer. Derby can be found in virtually any corner of the world, with local organizations stretching from Singapore to St. Louis. Roller derby’s 21st century resurgence is due in large part to our ever-connected world, where the internet has made amateur sport scouting as a whole much easier prospect than it once was. In the 21st century, especially in the U.S., derby possesses a feminist, DIY punk aesthetic. Speaking as someone who’s recently been to see Arch Rival Roller Derby, the atmosphere is less like a traditional sport, and more like a punk show, and I say that glowingly. Fans are not there to see points scored as much as simply have a good night out and maybe watch some crashes and spills. The spirit of derby in the modern era is far different than its gimmicked predecessors.
But how do they play it? When I first watched roller derby live (specifically Arch Rival Roller Derby’s Smashinistas vs. the Stunt Devils at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin on Feb.1), I came in having read the rules a bit but wondering how it would all look at full speed. Even at an amateur level, derby produces excitement, and one wonders what modern professional derby would potentially look like with a new and growing talent pool. For this, I’ll be specifically looking at roller derby as based on the rules of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, or WFTDA. According
to the Derby News Network, nearly 99 percent of roller derby contests were held under WFTDA regulations. Flat track derby is played by two teams fielding five players at a time, skating counterclockwise on an oval track (generally) on a roller hockey rink. The track is not a perfect or even oval, as entrances to straightaways leaving turns are larger (15 feet) than entrances to turns leaving the straightaway (10 feet). This unevenness causes more bumping, crashing and maneuvering (i.e.: more fun) in turns and allows the scoring players, called jammers, wider openings on the straightaway to gain speed. Play is broken up into two-minute segments called “jams” where teams try to score as many points as possible. The aforementioned jammers, marked by a large star on their helmets, act as the main source of points. Both teams’ jammers start 30 feet behind the other players on the track to build speed into the turns, with the goal of passing the opposition players, scoring a point for each player passed in that trip through the pack. The only other position that can score in roller derby is the pivot, marked with a stripe on their helmets, who can be converted to a jammer mid-jam. The pivot often serves as a de facto captain if they are not already in such a role, setting the pace of the pack and dictating team strategy during jams. Much like in football, blockers do not score but are crucial to their own team scoring. A designated blocker in roller derby creates the pack that jams up the turns, both to stop the opposing team’s jammer from passing and to create a lane for their own jammer to get through the pack. Blockers tend to skate slower, linking arms together in groups of three or four in an effort to clog turns.

Better Know a Sport
Points are counted by referees that specifically follow the jammers to tally points, with other officials calling penalties during play. Penalized players go to a hockey-like penalty box for 30 seconds of a jam, and if a jammer is penalized, a “power jam” is triggered. A power jam gives one team an opportunity to score freely without worrying about giving up points to another team’s penalized jammer.
But where can I see it? Well that is an easy one. As I have mentioned in this article, St. Louis is the home of Arch Rival Roller Derby, and during their season they hold events at least once a month in the suburb of Ballwin, Mo. Their local league, comprised of the Smashinistas, Stunt Devils, M80s and Rebel Skate Alliance, is in the heat of their near fourmonth campaign. The Smashinistas look to be the favorites to capture this year’s league title. When I saw them on Feb. 1, they were dominant throughout the match, making easy work of the Stunt Devils. A huge crowd (by my estimate, around one thousand or so folks) filled up Midwest Sport Hockey’s roller rink when I attended, so I would suggest buying tickets in advance if possible.

In summary, Roller derby, once filling Madison Square Garden, might actually be better off outside of the confines of famous arenas. In its current amateur form spanning the globe, roller derby is accessible as ever to a burgeoning audience. The DIY, feminist, and “punk” nature of roller derby in the modern age sets it apart even from “extreme” sports. In a sports world filled with stuffy dudes in even stuffier suits, roller derby is a needed respite from the buttoned-down.

Focusing on My Future Goals in Life By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
From this point on, I am only focused on my future because I have accepted my past and come to realize I cannot change what has happened in my past. But one thing for sure, I can dictate what is going to happen in my future because I deserve the best. Getting a late start at college has made me
realize how much education means to me, and the thought of achieving my goals is showing me daily how much knowledge I am gaining as an individual. The goals I have set to achieve in my life will not happen overnight, but there will be one day that I will be able to look back and say to myself, “I
remember when I first thought about achieving this goal.” I am starting off with small goals and learning to turn them into larger goals one by one. In the process of focusing on my goals to better myself, I have seen myself change for the better and have realized that surrounding myself
with individuals that are where I am headed in life are amazing people to be around. Having patience and realizing I can do anything I put my mind to helps me realize I have a future to continue looking forward to. Everything that was made to break me down has only helped
In life, going through a stressful phase can bring on depression and stress issues. But when you realize you deserve happiness and you are ready to smile, it is definitely a marvelous feeling from the inside out. Of course, choosing your friends wisely and being able to refrain yourself from toxic people helps. Whether it is a family member, friend or even a friend of a friend. You do not have to be around negativity. It is best to avoid those types of
individuals, especially if you are focused on protecting your peace and doing what is best for you. Being a college student is about making your own choices. As well as being able to stay positive while enjoying life as a college student. It is nice to explore exactly where you are headed in the near future. Often, having your head on straight with structure in your life will definitely play a huge part of refraining yourself from situations that do not really matter, which really are considered pointless matters. Queer Dating Stories
What Does a Lesbian Bring on a Second Date? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
C
oming to terms with one’s sexuality is at times a long and exhausting process. It took me many years to completely accept myself, and try to venture into the dating world. Over time, I have ended up collecting stories and lessons learned from my dating life, which I will now be sharing every month for roughly the next year. All names will be changed to protect the privacy of everyone mentioned, as they deserve anonymity and respect– no matter how bad the stories may have ended. Instead of telling these stories in chronological order, I will be telling them by order of importance of their morals. So, there has been a long-standing stereotype that LGBTQ+ people, especially lesbians, have a bad habit of moving in together too quickly. While I hate to give stereotypes any legitimacy, this does actually tend to happen more often than I would like to admit. It is not without reason, though, put the situation into a little more perspective. LGBTQ+ people make up only 5 percent of the entire population. Narrow that down to roughly 5 percent of the United States. Then, divide that into 50. Then, divide that in half for your preferred gender. Then, divide it again for people in your age range, again for people you find attractive,
again for people who find you attractive back, again for being single at the same time, again for being out of the closet, and again for having actual chemistry together. In other words, the math is really not in our favor here. So, it actually makes sense when someone finally finds a partner, they try to lock it down as soon as they can. Unfortunately, this also leads to a lot of major mistakes, as my friend Joanie knows well. Usually, I would be telling my own tales of woe in dating, but that will not be the case this month. I have actually found myself in a situation that has been more functional, peaceful and loving than any other before. With that being the case, there is not too much story to tell that would be of great use or morals to you lovely readers. I also personally have not made the mistake of moving in with someone too quickly, but I do know somebody who has. My good friend Joanie has graciously decided to lend me a story of hers to share with you all instead. Everybody, meet Joanie’s ex-girlfriend Ava. Ava is the kind of girl who will say one thing, but means something else entirely, and has issues with being honest with herself and others about what will make her happy. It should be noted that Ava and Joanie met during a hard time in Joanie’s life. Joanie had just been through a breakup and was looking to figure out how to find her own place in the world, while
simply trying to pass the time as she figured everything out. Ava, meanwhile, was living with her ex-girlfriend Lindie, trying to be simple roommates and act like she was not still affected by Lindie’s inability to commit and broke up with her. In fact, Ava and Joanie met because Lindie was dating Joanie’s cousin Quinn. This would often lead to Quinn taking Joanie with her to Lindie’s, making Ava and Joanie spend a lot of time together as well. They were a disastrous match from the start. They were encouraged strongly by Quinn and Lindie to become a couple, and with Joanie itching to leave her old apartment for somewhere nicer to live, Ava and Lindie decided to open their door to Joanie and Quinn and solidify their respective relationships. While it had only been a few weeks into the relationship, the cousins figured that since they had been spending so much time with them anyway, it only made sense to move in with them. For a short while, everything seemed to be fine, and everyone was happy and friendly with one another. It had even led to Lindie and Ava putting aside their differences and getting along better. That is when things began to change. Joanie would start to notice small things at first between Lindie and Ava, like Lindie pouring Ava’s cereal along with her own, or sitting a little too close together on the couch, or the occasional longing glance when they thought Joanie was not
looking. Then, it became a bit more brazen as Lindie would come home with food from Ava’s favorite restaurant, or suggest a movie to watch that Ava had mentioned earlier that day. Things became even more suspicious when Ava suggested she and Joanie should have an open relationship, which Joanie said she would only consider on the condition of Lindie being off-limits in such an area. Ava told her that would be no problem. Even so, there were a few times Joanie voiced her discomfort to Ava, who simply shrugged the subject off and tried to insist that her relationship with Lindie was purely platonic. While Joanie was still uncertain, she told herself she had to trust her girlfriend and not be so paranoid. Even so, Joanie would begin to feel a bit nervous whenever she would leave Ava and Lindie alone at the house while she went to work. While Joanie had been falling in love, she was also quickly falling into fear. Joanie may have trusted Ava, but she had not trusted Lindie as far as she could throw her. Things became even more complicated when Lindie broke up with Quinn, for reasons that had not been explained or elaborated on at the time. Quinn left to go live with a few friends a few blocks away, leaving only the other three in the house. A few weeks later, Lindie had tried to pursue another of Joanie’s good friends, whom she had specifically asked Lindie to leave alone. Lindie had

made clear to Joanie that she would date whomever she wished and did not need Joanie’s permission or approval. Joanie again voiced her concerns to Ava, who had again insisted that she was wrong and everything was fine. So, Joanie made a conscious effort to push her fears to the side and instead focus on the upcoming Valentine’s Day and making it a special day for Ava. Amongst all the planning, Joanie had felt her nerves slip away and believed more confidently in her love instead. Joanie would often have Quinn still come over to visit and the two would discuss the plans she intended to surprise her girlfriend, and had settled on a rather grand romantic gesture for their upcoming dinner date. When she had finalized her idea a week before Valentine’s Day, Quinn and Joanie went outside to enjoy the nice weather on the front porch and congratulate themselves on a job well done. Then, Ava and Lindie came home in Lindie’s car and walked up to the two. In an instant, Joanie knew what was about to happen and was horrified at the fact she could not stop it. “Lindie and I are in love, and I can’t keep doing this anymore. I’m going to give you a few days to take your things home, but this was our home first and we want to be together. I’m sorry, I really like you, but I love Lindie,” Ava had stated. According to Joanie, the next few minutes were a bit of a blur as she screamed profanities at
the newly reconciled couple and felt an intense rage at all her worst fears being confirmed. Things became more intense when the next thing she knew, Joanie’s fist had made contact with Lindie’s nose and knocked the other woman to the ground. The two fought for a few minutes until Quinn and Ava forced the two apart. Within a half-hour, Lindie’s nose stopped bleeding and Joanie had parked her car up and left to stay with Quinn. Joanie has made a point to not speak to Ava since and has firmly decided to never U-Haul with someone again without truly knowing the other person and their intentions. Since then, Joanie has moved on and is doing a lot better with a nice young woman named Lisa, and the two have decided to not U-Haul until they are good and ready. I am telling you all of this because it can be really easy to be blinded by love, and to be scared of never being able to find your person. The idea of moving in with somebody and then never having to worry about finding love again is definitely appealing, but it should not be made lightly. Our own independence and selflove need to be prioritized because otherwise, it could leave us vulnerable for someone else to take advantage of. Nobody deserves to have their heartbroken and be left homeless. We are all worth more than that and deserve to find someone who wants to take the time to not shack up, but to actually build a home.

The Primary Election Should Be Your PRIME-Priority By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
The primary elections are upon us once again, taking place March 17, 2020, which gives everyone the chance to choose the Democrat of their choice to run for President this fall. While currently sitting President Donald Trump will undoubtedly be chosen once again to run on behalf of the Republican Party, everyone has been focusing more on who will potentially be running against him. While following the debates over the last few weeks,
we currently have Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, Tom Steyer, Bernie Sanders, Tulsi Gabbard, and Michael Bloomberg in the running for the Democratic primary election. Most of the debates are still available for viewing on YouTube and Hulu. As a proud American and Illinoisan, I am personally excited to once again see democracy in action and get to vote in the primary elections. While I prefer to keep my personal choice
anonymous, it is important to follow the candidates and the debates in order to decide who has your values and best interest at heart. For anyone interested, check on your voter status and consider signing up to vote for the Presidential Election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020. It is important to stay informed and to go vote in the primary, no matter what your political allegiance is, because it is the civic duty our ancestors fought and died for. This is
a choice that could potentially affect the United States in a major way and deserves to be taken seriously. Especially considering the fact that one of these people could potentially become our next president, and therefore have the power to make a real difference. No matter who wins, all that can be said is that this will be one of the most anticipated elections in history, and determine the fate of the United States of America for the next four years.

Vine Successor Byte Launches By Gary Chapman
The spiritual successor to Vine, Byte, launched on Jan. 24. The app has a time-limit of 6.5 seconds and is going to have monetization directly, instead of having to go through the hoops of Google AdSense. The app was created by Dom Hofmann, who helped create the popular video hosting service, Vine. Vine shut down in January of 2017 because, according to CNN’s Seth Fiegerman, “Vine suffered from Twitter’s muddled product vision: inability to keep up with competitors and an unclear path to mainstream success.” Vine, even after being switched to a
camera app, still has remained popular with most people. Compilations titled “Vines that Butter My Croissant” and “iconic vines that changed the world (sic)” are videos that remain popular, almost three years on. Byte was initially going to be called “V2” but was put on hold by Hofmann due to the server costs and maintenance being too high, as Twitter bought Vine before it launched, and they had more servers than Hoffmann. Byte was officially announced in November 2018, after Hoffman received funding and a team. The app
launched a pilot program for creators in late 2019. One of the major draws of Byte is that its creator program will have direct monetization through ad revenue, which competitor TikTok does not. Dami Lee from The Verge noted that “Partner pool money will be funded by ads, but Byte is also promising those ads will not run in the Following feed or run as pre-roll ads in front of Byte videos,” and that “The app will share 100 percent of ad revenue with creators during its initial pilot period.” The app did launch with some issues with bots and follow-for-follow
schemes. Some early users snatched up usernames for celebrities and YouTubers. YouTuber Nick Nocturne, who is the creator of the Horror channel Night Mind, had to create an account just so he did not have to “deal with roleplayers.” Another issue that occurred was the fact that some users’ videos were sexual ns some manner, all the while the app had a 12+ rating (after this was noticed, the app was marked for 17+) The app did have issues, but the app is made well, has good features, and is a great alternative to the giant TikTok.

Energy Efficiency for Old Houses and Buildings By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
The event, Energy Efficiency for Old Houses and Buildings, was presented at the Genealogy and Local History Library located in Alton, Ill, by Bob Yapp, who is the founder of the Belvidere School for Hands On Preservation, as well as president of Preservation Resources Inc. His hometown is located in Hannibal, Mo. This is his third year presenting lectures in workshops, which he is well known for being preservation friendly. Recently, Yapp presented a lecture in a Texas Statewide Conference located in Austin, Texas.
He informed every individual in attendance about retrofits for energy efficiency paybacks pertaining to windows, wind, solar, geothermal, weather stripping, airflow, and insulation. Retrofit for energy is based upon retrofitting historic main historic buildings, which we must be able to cost effectively retrofit them with energy efficient systems affordably.. “In the construction industry, nothing is considered old growth unless it is 60 years old,” said Yapp. To start, get an energy audit, which includes blower door testing and
informed testing. Be sure to have an analysis of the existing HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system as well. Have the existing heating and air conditioning systems inspected by a mechanical engineer before you make any decisions about replacing these systems. We as human beings tend to create warm moist air in our houses, which does not go up or down; it finds gaps of places known as wall cavities throughout the house and condensates moisture insulation of houses. Heating systems are very important. “Humidifiers are great to have,” said Yapp.
In terms of Windows Realities, u-values are the calculation of how much energy passes through a one square foot area of a window in one hour. Typically, windows compromise only 10 to 15 percent of the energy footprint of any historic building. The value of $20 and $60 worth of weather stripping, and a $400 wooden, exterior storm window, with low e-glass, you can expect the U-value to go from the stated 0.44 down to a 0.34 to 0.40. Total restoration to safely remove old lead paint and putty. as well as adding new weather stripping, should run between $750
to $1,200 for commercial and $450 to $700 for residential. Remember to always keep original windows. “There is nothing worser (sic) than glass used as an insulator,” said Yapp. In today’s society, we all currently reside in Masonry. It is a huge issue with energy efficiency. Being able to insulate your building is a significant process. But insulation over a brick thermal mass is a waste of money. While insulating a brick wall is backward because it radiates the heat when rebuilt back into structure. It raises energy
costs, and one place always to insulate is down in the basement. According to the U.S. Department of Energy in regard to Awnings says, “Window awnings can reduce solar gain in the summer up to 65 percent on south facing windows and 77 percent on west facing windows. While every building is different and orientation to the sun varies, awnings can potentially save 10 percent to 25 percent on energy costs per year.” “Geothermal can work in urban environments. Be an educated energy consumer,” said Yapp.

Chemistry Professor Named L&C’s 2020 ICCTA Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member Award Nominee Press Release
Professor of Chemistry Alan Bruha is Lewis and Clark Community College’s Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member Award nominee for Spring 2020. Bruha coordinates the Chemistry Department, teaching general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. “I enjoy the subject, chemistry. I enjoy teaching chemistry to students. I have a talent for taking complex ideas and simplifying them, which is necessary for teaching chemistry,” Bruha said. “I like that no two days are the same. Each day brings up new challenges. I believe that our society needs more scientific literacy and as a teacher, I can do that. I like helping people move forward with their lives and, again, teaching allows me to do that.” Bruha has a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point,
and a doctorate in chemistry from Marquette University. Prior to teaching, Bruha spent five years working in hospitals as a Medical Technologist, five years in graduate school performing chemistry research, three years in the chemical industry following graduation with his doctorate, and three years running his own environmental consulting business. While at Sigma Chemical Company, Bruha received a Senior Chemist Award in 1991. Bruha was an adjunct instructor at four different schools before teaching full time in 1997. He got his start at L&C as an adjunct in the late 1990s and started full time in Fall 2002. “Alan Bruha is very deserving of this award,” said colleague Gerald Mozur. “He is well-liked by all and is known for his excellence in the classroom and as a coordinator. It couldn’t happen to a better guy. He teaches a full load of classes, coordinates the chemistry program, and volunteers his
Bruha says the best part of his job is spending time with his students in both the classroom and laboratory. “There are many duties a fulltime faculty member fulfills, but the time spent with students is the most rewarding,” he said. “I am proudest when a former student sees me out in public and they tell me that I was the best teacher they had. When they tell me that it was my teaching that allowed them to pass the class and move forward in their field of study, I am very proud.” Professor of Chemistry L&C offers freshman and sophomore-level chemistry Alan Bruha is L&C’s nomclasses that appeal to a variety inee for the ICCTA Outstanding Full-Time Faculty of students. The Lewis and Clark Community College National Great Rivers Research and Education Center’s (NGRREC) Conservation Team, including Land Conservation Specialists and the Habitat Strike Team (HST), recently attended the Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference in Springfield, Illinois. “The conference was a great way for us to interact with some of our partners and learn about new restoration techniques as well as be inspired by the conservation enthusiasm of the conference,” said Lindsay Griggs, HST Senior Assistant. She has been mentoring and training L&C student interns since the fall of 2019. The conference’s theme, “Bringing Science Back to the Forefront of Resource Management,” was especially pertinent to their duties as conservationists who both conduct habitat management and assess/plan conservation practices in the state of Illinois. Seven full-time staff and one L&C student intern were able to attend conference workshops, which featured information on invasive species removal and drone use in the natural resources field, and a day of professional speakers.
This was the first professional conference for several members of the NGRREC Conservation Team, and they benefited from networking with partners and learning about new research in the field. This knowledge can help them make more informed management decision and create great talking points with private landowners and the partners they work with, like the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) and Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). “I obtained valuable insight and knowledge from affiliates within the agencies I aspire to work for,” said Philip Rathz, the student intern who attended the conference. “I am looking forward to applying what I learned in pursuit of a career in wildlife conservation and habitat restoration.” Rathz has been with the NGRREC Habitat Strike Team since fall of 2019 and has gained valuable experience with habitat management tools and techniques. He is currently enrolled in the Restoration Ecology Program at L&C and received class credit for completing his paid internship with NGRREC’s Habitat Strike Team.
This meeting was a great experience for Rathz, who has expressed interest in a career in wildlife conservation and biology. In addition to habitat management experience, he has been exposed to wildlife sampling techniques with wildlife ecologist and NGRREC’s Conservation Program Manager Justin Shew. With IDNR partners, Shew is assisting with monitoring reptiles and amphibians, as well as avian communities, at Pere Marquette State Park associated with habitat management conducted by IDNR and NGRREC’s Strike Team. “The conference has a history of being very student friendly, and this year was no exception,” said Shew, who took on a couple leadership roles for the conference by being a part of the student events planning committee, helping plan a successful student networking lunch. At this lunch, professionals, including NGRREC’s Conservation Team, answered student attendee questions and gave authentic advice as they navigated the natural resources profession. Shew also orchestrated the mentee and mentor pairing for the conference to help students

Mentor/mentee pairing hadn’t been offered in 10 years at this conference. “One of my passions is helping and empowering students in the natural resources field,” Shew said. “Building a social/professional network is invaluable in any field and I hope that I have helped some of these students connect with a
