L&C Hosts Unforgettable Fall Fest
Those not in attendance at Lewis and Clark Community College’s Fall Fest 2019 missed out on giveaways, food and more. More than 800 students attended this year’s festivities. Students were given shirts, water bottles, chunky slices of watermelon, hamburgers and hot dogs fresh off the barbecue grill. “Overall, considering the extreme heat, I think fall fest went very well,” Student Activities Coordinator Jared Hennings said. “There were plenty of activities, from trampoline, joust, rock wall climbing and an abundance to eat for students. Factoring in the photo booth, face painter, caricaturists and balloon makers, it seems like there was something for everyone. I’m glad we took a moment to remember our fellow citizens who lost their lives in the 911 attacks also with a special rendition of Taps from a student Matthew Rothe.” Clubs were on hand to recruit new members and share information. Dedicated, intellectual, and caring: these are some of the words that can be used to describe L&C instructor Steve Campbell. But above all else, he is inspiring, both to those in his personal life and to his own students. From his stories of high school and college art classes to achieving his masters while helping raise a family, he instills confidence in every one of his students to put their best foot forward and realize that nothing is impossible with a little hard work.
Graphic Design and Web Design and Development programs here at L&C has been an art enthusiast all his life. He remembers, as a child, his mother purchasing his first paint-by-number kits and getting in trouble for purposely painting outside the lines and blending his colors!
He was a part of a select group of summer students who studied art in sixth grade, traveling to various points of interest in the Riverbend area and oil painting along the way. He studied art and drafting at L&C for a few years in the late 1970’s while working as a professional color photographer and retouch artist before getting a job as a technical illustrator for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis in 1979. Fast forward to today. Campbell completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at SIUE and has been at L&C since the Fall of 1992. He has had various roles at the college, which all led to where he is now, teaching since the Fall of 2000. Through all of that, his love of art and photography has only been enhanced by his education and computer training. He now teaches digital art and draws on his past knowledge and training to teach and train his students to succeed in the

She teaches ABE and ASE Math, Science, and Social Studies. She also holds the position of academic advisor here on campus. Waller holds a degree from Illinois State University with a BA in Elementary Education and from McKendree University with an MS in Educational Leadership.

Waller said, “It was one teacher in the seventh grade who did that for me and his name is Gary Swalley.” She was new to the school, and he made a positive impact on her through his help. Best of all, she said, “I wanted to help students who are struggling, realize their goals and dreams.”
Miss Waller started In her prior years she working at Lewis and taught fourth grade at Clark Community Holy Family School

Through that connection, Waller was able to gain employment in Academic Advising. After about a year, Adult Education was looking for a teacher and Marshall recommended her to Vicki Hinkle, retired Adult Education Director. Vicki then hired Waller in the Adult Education Department.
Waller said, “The students are the best part of my job, and I enjoy meeting new students every semester.” She also enjoys watching the students grow, learn, and achieve their goals. Were These Scary Stories Worth Telling in the Dark? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a classic horror book series for many people growing up. Three books published in 1981, 1984, and 1991 were part of the series, and their chilling tales have been told throughout multiple generations since. These chilling books included many stories and illustrations more than capable of bringing nightmares to anyone who reads them. The Shape of Water’s director Guillermo Del Torro, who worked as a producer for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, decided to take these nightmares as a challenge to make the movie’s monsters as close to the illustrations as possible. So, did these scary stories earn their way onto the big screen? Heck yes, they did! I couldn’t say enough to any horror fans that will hear me to go see this movie as soon as possible! The plot is good, the symbolism and political messages perfectly fit, the setting and costuming is superb, and the scary parts are
The casting in this movie was beyond perfect. There was surprisingly an overall plot to connect the stories together, a bit of a different take on horror anthologies when compared to works such as the Creepshow movies or the Tales From the Crypt movie. The film synopsis is as follows, “The shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large in the small town of Mill Valley for generations. It’s in a mansion that young Sarah Bellows turns her tortured life and horrible secrets into a series of scary stories. These terrifying tales soon have a way of becoming all too real for a group of unsuspecting teens who stumble upon Sarah’s spooky home.” The “pale lady”, as seen in the 2019 movie version of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”. The acting is also surprisingly well done, particularly Michael Garza, Zoe Margaret Colletti, and a particular contortionist who played the jangly man monster.
Orange is The New Black: The Sentence is Served
For those interested in seeing the movie, it is currently playing in most major movie theaters and will hopefully soon be hitting the shelves and online for payment. I, for one, am certainly going to buy a DVD to join my copies of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark on my bookshelf.

For those who haven’t yet watched the final season of “Orange is the New Black,” I highly recommend you get on the closest Netflix account to you and get to binge watching! Some say that the success of “Orange is the New Black” is what put Netflix Original Series on the map, and I would have to agree. “Orange is the New Black” was the first Netflix Original Series that I have personally watched, and it helped me appreciate things in a new perspective. Along the way I have come to love the different women and men that the series has had to offer, such as Laverne Cox, Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew, the fabulous Ruby Rose, and so many more. Alas, all good things must come to an end. What is interesting is the focus on Immigration Camps this season, as well as Piper’s story of what life is like for an Ex-Con on parole after rejoining the rest of society. Like a lot of other previous seasons, there are small things we learn about the justice system, such as how Ex-Cons must be continuously employed to pay for their own parole meetings and drug tests or face being returned to jail, but having
got a pretty fair and complete ending, although be warned that very few of the endings are anywhere close to happy. I shall miss all of these fictional characters and their lives in prison nonetheless.

There is also the discussion of loyalty to prison friends and prison lovers once you’ve rejoined the world and the tough decisions made around that. While I wish I could have more “Orange is the New Black,” I think for the most part all the characters
The most important aspect that came from this show comes in the form of a real-life counterpart fund available for donations in order to contribute to a variety of charities to benefit ex-cons trying to re-enter society as regular law-abiding citizens, called the Poussey Washington Fund. The fund is available for receiving donations at crowdrise.com/pousseywashingtonfund and states as follows, “Poussey Washington may have been a fictional character created for television, but her life’s story and devastating fate is all too real for many women in this country. The Poussey Washington Fund will support eight pre-existing nonprofits to benefit organizations focused on social issues surrounding criminal justice and policy reform, immigrants’ rights and helping those affected by mass incarceration. The “Orange Is The New Black” creative team created the fund to support organizations in their effort to rethink, revise and reform justice in America.”
Movie Comparison
it vs. it
By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
It is the season of spooky, and with that comes horror movies galore. On Sept. 6 “IT Chapter Two” was released as the concluding sequel to “IT Chapter One” from two years ago. Since I grew up watching “IT” the miniseries from 1990, naturally I had to rush out and see these films when they were released. Now like many I was quite skeptical of anyone trying to play Pennywise since Tim Curry was such an iconic evil clown, and after chapter one (2017) I wasn’t thoroughly impressed by Bill Skarsgård’s performance, but wasn’t necessarily disappointed either. I was mostly indifferent. Yet, after seeing the concluding chapter two (2019) I was extremely pleased. Since the two magnificent actors certainly had different takes on the character, I would say that Tim Curry was definitely the better killer clown, and Bill Skarsgård is certainly the better demonic world eater. Although I do wonder what Tim Curry could have done with the character had the technology of today been available to him. Let’s talk about the Losers now. While I think that the child actors of both new and old made solid believable stories, the adult actors of the new “IT” highly outshined the old crew, making them true losers in my book. This is easy

The antagonist of “It”, Pennywise, underwent a makeover for “It: Chapter 1 & 2.”
At the end of the day, the old “IT” was good for its time, with an everlasting performance by Tim Curry, and will always hold a nostalgic place in my heart. Now the new “IT” is something spectacular, both as a horror film and an adventure tale, and this remake has given fans what they deserve. If you have any doubts just know that Stephen King, author of the book, has given great praise to these films, and even has a cameo.

While most of the events of the books took place in the movie, there were a few interesting choices made to adapt the books. The timing was of course much quicker, even removing certain key establishment of characters or events in the story altogether. The biggest change and biggest complaint for fans is having a severely different appearance of the heroines, which is certainly a fair criticism. None of the heroines look like they could be related, despite the books claiming all three were nearly identical. I will say this for victims of sexual trauma, especially child sexual trauma: I would skip this series if I were you. Album Review
Absorbing “Birth of Violence” by Chelsea Wolfe By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
Friday the 13th is a day shrouded in superstition and mystic lore, and on this recent Friday the 13th on Sept. 13, 2019, witch-like doom metal, goth rock, singer-songwriter Chelsea Wolfe released her newest album Birth of Violence at the perfect time for this Halloween season. So what better album to review for the Oct. edition of this paper?

Chernobyl” and chants in the chorus “Guess I needed something to break me”, making it known that she is transformed both as an artist and a person.
The dark ambient sounds with a folky resonance that circles around Wolfe’s voice like a lingering shadow trying to come to life is only kept in its place by the pure power that Wolfe brings to the table. That power, her voice, ast it hauntingly howls and “Birth of Violence” by Chelsea Wolfe. whispers in an unreachable echo, always leaves Album cover via Google. me questioning whether or not I’m listening to a woman possessed by a demon or witch begging expression of her growth and recollection from for help, or is the witch just trying to lure me in? years on the road and the general toll of the business. Of course, Wolfe makes everything appear In her new album Birth of Violence, Chelsea like it has something to with some sort of dark ritual. Wolfe has really amplified these chilling sounds that give her the unique brand and following she In the first song “Mother Road” she croons “buildhas built for herself. The entire album is an obvious ing a broken but precious web like a spider in
It appears to me that a big part of this transformation is her self-recognition as a woman. In the title track “Birth of Violence” she sings “I’ve come to know what I need, I visualize while I bleed.” Which I interpret as her discovering herself through her pain, both physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. After listening to the entire album, I’ll say that “Erde” is my favorite song, but don’t even want to attempt to analyse those lyrics. The whole album is fantastic, like dark-hallowed poetry seeping through a mist. The final song “The Storm” is a perfectly simple finale to an album that might be the story of a ritual, or of a loving couple getting married at their funeral. Whatever the story is, it’s worth a listen for those who are intrigued by mysticism.
Music
Sounds to Rock for Halloween By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
Fall is upon us, and while many look forward to the smores and pumpkin spice lattes, others are more eager to embrace the spookier traditions of the season, such as horror movies, haunted houses, and basically anything that is of the dark, mysterious, macabre and overall eerily unsettling nature that can be celebrated. I Myself have always found the darkness and mystic tales to be of some of the most intriguing interest, and since I am also a music enthusiast, generally in the Rock sector, I thought it would be fitting to talk about the dark side of music that can be ventured into in the name of Halloween spirit.
and Scott Walker all bring something either so sporadic in noise or dark in lyrics that it becomes eerily comfortable for some to listen to. Of Course one can’t leave out the church burning, satan worshiping and black magic practicing Black Metal bands like Electric Wizard, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Paysage D’Hiver, Sun O))) and the band Burzum, whos lead singer was actually imprisoned for murder. Speaking of murderers why not listen to the famous cult leader/ serial killer Charles Manson’s album “Lie: The Love and Terror Cult.” In the vein of crazy you can listen to the bizarre music from the band Swans, in which founding member Michael Gira has apparently spent a number of years in psych wards.
I will try to briefly describe some artists and maybe even give some song or album recommendations along the way. Let’s start with the three horror rock icons most well associated with the spirit of horror, and the real horror show stagemen starting with the OG Alice Cooper, listen to his 1971 album “Killer”, or go watch him perform the song “Ballad of Dwight Fry” Live. Next we go to the truly macabre Marilyn Manson, listen to his albums “Antichrist Superstar” or “Mechanical Animals” for a real vicious taste. Finally we have my favorite of the three, hard-rockin-skull-stompin mad man Rob Zombie with his albums “Hellbilly Deluxe” or “The Sinister Urge” to get down to. But, Let’s go back further, cause if those are the gods of dark rock then here are some titans. First let’s talk about my favorite band of all time The Doors. Jim Morrison led the charge for mysticism in rock music and to hear that just listen to the albums “Strange Days” or “L.A. Woman” and let the doors of perception unfold. To dive a little further listen to the Doors perform their epic 23 minute song “Celebration of the Lizard.” Titan number two would have to be Black Sabbath, the parental guardians of Metal itself and the starting point for the infamous Ozzy Osbourne. Primary lyricist of Black Sabbath Geezer Butler was highly influenced by the dark arts and black magic, which booms through the sound waves in both 1970 albums “Paranoid” and “Black Sabbath.” Frontman Ozzy would take this style and carry it into his solo career for great albums like “Diary of a Madman” and Blizzard of Ozz.”
Titan number 3 is a man that is more unknown and off the beaten path like something lurking in a dark alley of the dirtiest side of town, and that’s probably how he’d prefer it. This man goes by the name Tom Waits, and with a voice said to be made of throat soaked in gravel, spiders and whiskey you can’t get much more in the
Album cover for “Black One” by Sunn O))). Album cover via Google. strange spirit than you can with this shadow lurking legend. When asked about his songwriting Waits said “What I try to do is write adventure songs and halloween music.” If you don’t believe him just venture into the albums “Raindogs,” “Real Gone” or “Franks Wild Years.” Some of these artists mentioned are still active today, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find more current artists to fit our criteria. Such as the ghostly Latin prog rock band The Mars Volta. Tales of conjuring demons and ghosts of he mirrored past can be heard in albums “De-Loused in the Comatorium,” “Frances the Mute” and “The Bedlam in Goliath.” Or you could listen to the weird dark bouncy music from any of Les Claypool’s many bands such as Primus, Oysterhead, Holy Mackerel, Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains, Electric Apricot, Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang or the Claypool Lennon Delirium to name a few. You could also venture into the astral void music of Maynard James Keenan’s three bands Tool, A Perfect Circle or Puscifer.
One truly dark musical entity to absorb comes from a woman named Chelsea Wolfe, whose music sounds like it must be inspired by the occult, witchcraft and dark rituals of old. Her voice is both haunting and terrifying, while simultaneously sounding warm and inviting, making some of the most haunting sounds I have ever heard, many even speculate whether or not she is an actual witch. Finally I want to mention what is probably the strangest and most evil sounding music one might find, if you could even call it music. That would be any albums coming from the recording label Enemies List, whose slogan is “NO FUN. NOT EVER. SINCE 2003.” This is a label that records some of the most obscure music one could imagine. The most noteworthy album being “Deconstructionist” by Giles Corey. With over an hour of music designed to induce trances, possession states, and out- of-body experiences, this album comes with a bookle exploring the why, how and history of trance, the illusion of self, the reason people commit suicide, why people ignore stab victims on the street. This album also comes with a warning label for those prone to seizures or a history of mental illness.
So if you want to do something to get into Back in my middle school days a lot of dark rock that halloween spirit other than vegging out artists were in the picture that are worth men- to a horror movie, turn on some of this mutioning. From the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, sic and go driving down some creepy old Disturbed, System of a Down, Slipknot, Korn, back roads and see where your mind goes. Godsmack and Dream Theatre. All of those bands and some others mentioned earlier may have gained influence from classics groups like King Crimson, Metallica, Gwar, Iron Maiden or Slayer. For those who don’t find these musicians twisted enough for you let’s continue into the darkest corners I could find, music that even I find to be too far out there. Artists like Aphex Twin, Slint, Lighting Bolt, Nurse With Wound, Whitehouse

Messages litter the front of the brown brick building, located on Northport Drive and Homer Adams Parkway. They say things like “Thanks for All The Memories,” “#PeaceWoody’s” and “Thank you. The messages are a reminder that the Woody’s Chicken building is an echo of what it once was. Woody’s closed Saturday, Aug. 31, after owners Christie and Candy Wooden, who took over from Jack and Cathy Wooden, wanted to retire, according to The Alton Telegraph. Woody’s was a local institution, having locations in Godfrey, East Alton and Wood River. Eventually trickling down to the one location on Homer Adams in Alton. Woody’s closed abruptly on Saturday, having only announced that they were closing on Thursday, Aug. 29. “I didn’t know they were closing until the day of at work,” L&C Student Kyleigh Hallows said. Various people online were feeling nostalgic and sad about the closure. The Telegraph interviewed people who visited the establishment on the last day it was open. “This is a great family business. I hate to see it go,” said Aaron Blackford, a regular of the establishment, in a Telegraph interview. “This is one landmark that I’m going to hate to see go, because I remember when they use to be over where Schnuck’s and Hardee’s are in the old A-frame building,” Robert Cress, a Navy veteran and Kitchen Manager at Golden Corral said. “Woody’s has been there for me, like an old friend to party with, or a shoulder to cry on,” said Billy Hurst, a Telegraph sports photographer. The day of closing, the Woody’s Chicken Facebook page posted that they would be selling the business but not as they want to keep the recipe that made their business an Alton staple.

Mississippi Earthtones Festival Lets the Sunshine In By Gail Harper abharper@gmail.com
Almost eight thousand people marked “interest” or “going” on Facebook in regards to this year’s Mississippi Earthtones Festival. The festival, which just celebrated its thirteenth year on September 21, is a celebration of earth preservation and conservation and most especially, our own Mississippi River. With attractions ranging from food vendors to apothecaries, there’s definitely something for everyone at MEF.
Fawn Berry, who owns and operates Fawn Berry Apothecary, said of the event “Everyone is open-minded and super friendly,” adding, “It’s the kind of event I’d like to attend [even if I wasn’t a vendor].” Fawn is originally from Philadelphia and relocated to Illinois from Denver, Colorado. Healing salve, herbal tea, smokable herbs, and soothing throat spray are just a few of the items one can find in Fawn’s store. “I wanted to connect with people...I would do this again. I think Alton’s really cool.” Fawn is now located in Quincy, Illinois, and can be found on Instagram and Etsy at FawnBerryApothecary.
a 340 million year old fossil sample taken from the bluffs, and our state mineral, fluorite. Brian added that the goal of the museum being there is to “...support, educate, and make aware of conservation and the environment; a focus on natural elements and river art.” The museum has been a vendor at MEF since 2006, MEF’s first year. This year, rain fell steadily on the morning of the event, but the sun quickly drove it away and light cascaded upon every part of the festival. People welcomed it readily, and the drabness was soon replaced by the event getting into full swing in all its greatness.
Bubbles danced in the air and popped on peoples’ noses, music drifted between the booths, and savory smells enticed the visitors to come check out new foods. Dogs on leashes are welcome here, chalk art lined the streets and everyone was all smiles. Vendors talked congenially, engaged, with visitors, and a belly dancer bounced around to the music with a little girl. It felt like everyone was happy to be here. St. Louis Blues Preview: Can The Blues Go Back To Back? By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
For the first time in their storied history, the Blues enter the NHL season as defending champions. This previously uncharted territory seemed like a fantasy to most fans early last season. The Blues were the worst team in the NHL on New Year’s Day, and miraculously hoisted the Stanley Cup on Market Street in downtown St. Louis roughly six months later. Before we can look forward to the new season, it’s important to appreciate what the Blues accomplished in those wild six months. As noted in the opening paragraph, this was the worst team in the National Hockey League, and played many abysmal games in the first half of the last NHL season. Fans and hockey analysts alike were calling for heads to roll, for players to be traded for draft picks or younger players. One head did roll, Mike Yeo was relieved of his head coaching duties and replaced by Craig Berube. Many point to that switch as the start of the turnaround. Berube shifted the mood and culture in the locker room. The Blues had the talent to win, but for whatever reason, Mike Yeo’s
message wasn’t clicking with the players. Berube’s different coaching style resonated with the club, and the team galvanized around their new energetic coach. You can’t think or talk about the 2018-19 St. Louis Blues season without mentioning the amazing run of rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington. Binnington didn’t necessarily seem like a future star goalie, he had been in the minors of the Blues organization for a handful of years, only playing one NHL game prior to last season. Ardent fans were paying more attention to Blues minor league goalie prospect Ville Husso to be the breakout “goalie of the future” for the team. Binnington got his chance, and never let go, he won 24 games, posted a save percentage of .927, and a goals-against-average in the regular season. He went from proverbial unknown to one of the best goalies in hockey in 30 games. Historically, the Blues franchise is used to playoff competition. Unfortunately, that playoff experience was often limited to the first few rounds, before they were knocked out by
more complete teams in previous years. Out of sanity, people assume the Blues are going to lose at some point in the playoffs, because they have done so about forty times in the past fifty years. So what happened when they actually won the thing? The city erupted. During the finals thousands and thousands packed downtown for watch parties that were often overflowing with people and well over “capacity.” The Blues Stanley Cup victory parade was a sea of blue downtown. A reported figure somewhere between half a million and a million people went to the Blues parade, Metro St. Louis had to order more trains in service for the hundreds of thousands of people flooding the city. Thousands camped for better views of the parade. That Saturday in June was the absolute peak of the St. Louis Blues, as a franchise, and as St. Louis’s team. So now what? The Blues have never been in this position before, defending champs, a target on their back, a fancy little “Stanley Cup Champions” patch above the Bluenote on their jerseys. Only one team in the past 20 years
has managed to win the Stanley Cup in back-toback years, the Pittsburgh Penguins, in 2016 and 2017. The Blues aren’t necessarily better or worse than they were last year, with everyone not named Pat Maroon returning this season. Due to the unfortunate business nature of sport, the hometown hero who scored the Game 7 winner against Dallas in the playoffs has moved on to Tampa Bay. The Blues have an abundance of forwards, and for Maroon to get the ice time he wants and deserves, the move was necessary. Just like last year, the NHL Central Division is still incredibly tough, likely the toughest division in the NHL. The Blues likely cannot afford to have multiple down months, although you could potentially argue that playing low-energy hockey during the November and December months kept their legs fresh for their postseason run. Conversely, the Tampa Bay Lightning that Pat Maroon joined, were incredible last season, setting an NHL record for wins in the process, but they also were swept out of the playoffs in the first
round by the Columbus Blue Jackets. You get a trophy for winning the regular season, but it’s not quite as big a deal as the Stanley Cup. This year is a “prove it” year for team captain Alex Pietrangelo. The captain is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, and will be playing for a contract, whether it be here or elsewhere. The Blues, more than teams probably should, rely on their defenseman like Pietrangelo and Colton Parayko for offense, goals and booming shots that create chaos in front of the opponent’s goal. Also on a contract year is Brayden Schenn, who adds a jolt to the offense, and last scored in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Blues are hoping that motivation to get a big contract ignites both these players, and helps an offense that occasionally stagnated when Jordan Binnington was standing on his head. The one aspect of the Blues game that needs to improve to repeat is the special teams, primarily, the power play unit. Despite hoisting the Stanley Cup, and increasing use of the word “hoisting” in and around the St.
Louis metro area, the Blues power play in the playoffs was often dreadful. The power play in the playoffs was so abysmal that Blues radio play-by-play man Chris Kerber once pleaded with the team to just hold the puck and kill two minutes until the teams were even strength again. To address this, the Blues hired former Boston Bruin Marc Savard, who was a power play specialist in his playing days, hoping he can implement a new strategy when up a man or two on the ice. So, to answer the question of the headline: Can the Blues Go Back To Back? They’re in a better position than most teams that win the Stanley Cup, where players tend to move on and use their championship to get better deals elsewhere. With virtually the same team, and with the playoff experience of winning it all, why can’t they?
St. Louis Blues defenceman, Alex Pietrangelo.

Why True Love Doesn’t Cost a Dime By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Are you in love? Or let’s just say maybe one day in the near future you will be in love, or someone you know may end up in love. Love can have multiple meanings; a feeling, an action or great interest or pleasure in something. As well as an intense feeling
of affection or deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone. In the same way, the feelings can be mutual in regards to someone. At times we think we are in love with someone and we are not. But sometimes we find out at the end of the relationship that it was never love.
Love is not all about spending lots of money and buying expensive gifts for someone. If you think it is, you might end up broke or brokenhearted! It’s about honesty, trust, memories, affection, and simply getting to one another etc. A good date doesn’t have to bust your
wallet. How about going on long walks by the lake, watching the sunset together, cooking a nice meal for one another, or going out for lunch? In the same way, taking a trip to the library, and getting ice cream together can help you simply get to know each other. Additionally, studying

Self-expression is a luxury that everyone can enjoy. Rather it be through makeup, clothes, hair, tattoos or body piercings, no one has a right to judge. Self-expression tends to be both healthy and tricky at the same time. Let me explain. I like to wear black or darker clothing along with darkish makeup, and I’ve dyed my hair a dark red. I like to look like Halloween all year
round because it makes me comfortable, and boosts my confidence to know I look good and represent my personality. Now, some of my family members on the other hand, think I look better in brighter clothes and more natural looking makeup. They don’t care much about my hair and all agree it looks good on me. But, if I wear that dark clothing I will get something along the lines of “You look

Because my dark clothes and As for tattoos, when makeup helps me get all you see a person with of my negativity out of a tattoo or multiple my system. Does the fact that they have tattoos define their work ethic? Not at all, they still work hard. Check Out the Newest Group on Campus, “Active Minds” By Alexandra Blockton ablockton@lc.edu
Do you feel as if you just can’t seem to get things organized because your mind is all over the place? Everything seems as if you just can’t get it right, your mind races from different thoughts? Maybe depression or anxiety looms over you, or perhaps you suffer from panic attacks. No need to look any further! You are not alone and “Active Minds” is here for you. This group is based about equanimity for the students. “Active Minds” is a
student group here at Lewis and Clark Community College, and Christina Chapman and Alice Bunjan are the co-faculty/staff for this group. This group started from one of Chapman’s classes doing research on stress in college. Additionally, the need was found for meditation, quiet time, and prayer as healthy coping mechanisms. There are lots of activities and serious group sessions that will be very helpful for you, if that is what you need. I
personally believe that is a marvelous idea to have this group here on campus. It will help students suffering from these different issues succeed mentally and academically. Chapman said, “We came across the statistic that the second leading cause of death among college age students is suicide, with around 11,000 students a year committing suicide. We decided we wanted to do something about that. We created a
presentation and the students wrote personal testimonials about their experience with suicide, depression, and anxiety in their lives and in the lives of the people they love. Vice president Dr. Sean Hill agreed to fund an exhibit called, “Send Silence Packing”, for the Spring Semester through the group Active Minds. They will be bringing 1,100 backpacks to the campus to represent those lost each year through suicide and place them throughout the grounds
here at the college.” They will also be providing information on how to reach out for help! Equally important, this a fabulous group to join filled with compassionate and caring students from all over campus. If you are interested in joining please contact Christina Chapman (Chrissie) at 618-4684729 or by email: CChapman@lc.edu, as well as Alice Bunjan by email: abunjan@lc.edu, or by phone at 618468-2730. They both
will be very pleased and excited to assist you on further information with joining the group, “Active Minds.” In conclusion, Chapman said, “Even if you cannot attend every meeting, your input is valued and appreciated. Come learn a little, make some friends, and work towards making this campus one where everyone feels they belong and no one has to suffer in silence. Let’s help each other out!”

Letter to the One that Burnt Me By Harley Camryn
How can you say you loved me? Sure, people f*ck up, but you do not burn the ones you love. You should want every touch to be a note in the song that your love creates within the soul, not a flame that will burn for years to come. You should want to caress every cytoplasm filled cell that creates the thighs she cries about at night, and that ever-so-tiny tummy you adore even when she tells you she’s disgusting. Somehow, though, you’d rather brand her with the hot iron of your words; the words that gouge deeper into her skin every time you tell her she’s a slut, and still you laugh when the searing pain comes out in muffled screams. You should want her to remember your hands as a gentle place to come to for the love she so desperately needed, but now any hand raised the wrong way is a threat of the burning past. No matter how hard she may try to forget you, she’ll still remember the night she combusted. The inside of the garage door, the dirty floor, burnt into her memories. The way her ashes tumbled over as you kicked them into the wind. You should want the memories she carries of you together to brighten every dark corner of her mind, yet the memories you have created will haunt her for the rest of her life. The fire of those memories does not burn red, orange, or yellow; those memories are black. They hold no light, nor can they illuminate. They grab hold and drag her back to that darkness that was there before you, only now it doesn’t end when she smiles, it burns hotter. Now the corners of her lips turn up only to hide the darkness that burns deep within and cannot be exhumed. Nothing that you could have ever said or done would make it okay to manipulate or lay a
hand on you. I say this because in the words of Stephen Chobsky, “We accept the love
we think we deserve.”, and I couldn’t agree more. My only other thought would be that
there is no reason someone who loves you would want to put you through this pain.

Venue Review: The Good and Bad of St. Louis’s Stadiums By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
pace of hockey and the energy in the building, are naturally fun to be at. Eighteen thousand people yelling can’t be wrong. Unlike baseball or football where there’s lots of downtime and games can be relaxing to a degree, hockey is loud, quick, and abrasive, a great spectator sport.
St. Louis, at its heart, is a sports city. Even after the departure of the beloved but often mediocre Rams, St. Louis offers some of the best live experiences in American sports. Sure, winning teams help, winning a World Series or a Stanley Cup helps, but what really makes that feeling is the stadium. A key reason often pointed out when discussing the aforementioned Rams leaving was that the Dome was an awful place to watch sports. When the Rams weren’t competitive, the Dome was more like a junky football library than a raucous stadium, and the team still attempted to charge people insane prices. In their final season, the cheapest Rams ticket at the Dome box office was $47 before fees. Why pay that to have a lousy Sunday afternoon? In this spirit, this piece is all about our local sports facilities, and what to expect from them, both good and bad. Let’s start off with the most omnipresent stadium in St. Louis: BUSCH STADIUM III, OPENED 2006 You can’t talk about sports in STL without talking about Busch Stadium. For fans not from here who only know St. Louis through memes of Cardinals fans being stupid, Busch might as well be the entire city. Most people in the area have probably been there once or twice, either for a ballgame or for the less sports-inclined a concert.
St. Louis Busch Stadium III. even if your tickets are standing room only. There’s several bartype locations throughout the stadium, such as the Bud Terrace on the upper deck and the Bowtie Bar on the second deck in left field, that provide both views of the field and walls of TVs to keep you posted on the action. The food selection at Busch Stadium now is outrageous in a good way, and the notion of buying a bag of popcorn or a hotdog at the ballgame has been tossed to the wayside for open-pit BBQ and street tacos. Conversely, Busch Stadium is one of very few sports facilities overall that allows fans to bring in their own food and (non-alcoholic) beverages, if not wanting to peruse the ever-growing concession menus.
For those on a budget but love getting out to the ballpark, the Cardinals offer what’s called a Ballpark Pass, where for $35 a month (including fees) one receives a standing room only ticket to every single home game. Only a small handful of Major League Baseball teams Good: Busch is beau- offer such a deal. tiful. Amazing views of Busch is St. Louis’s downtown, Bad: there’s really not a EXPENSIVE. If you are bad seat in the house, not one to bring in your
own food or drinks, be prepared to spend upwards of $50. Tickets to get in are pretty reasonable compared to Major League Baseball as a whole, but once you get in the park be prepared to spend money. The BBQ up in the Bud Terrace is great, I love the shrimp skewers, but it will also cost $15 to get two of them and some chips. For those feeding others, a meal for a group of four is likely pushing $100, and that’s assuming no one in the group is drinking beer or alcohol, which basically start at $10 per drink. One of my personal favorite treats at Busch is a Twisted Top Pretzel, a pretzel covered with cheese or a number of other toppings like pepperoni and buffalo chicken. However, due to a $10.50 price tag for a single pretzel, I can rarely bring myself to spend so much on something that’s gone in a few bites. Combine that with the smallest possible soda you can buy that still costs $6, and you’ve spent $16.50 on two items that might last you through the first inning. Price-gouging also happens when looking for souvenirs, where stuff like hats

and jerseys that are already pricey are pushed to ridiculous rates. A hat can now cost $50, some jerseys can cost over $300, and the cheaper ends of those spectrums aren’t actually cheap at all. One of the most popular e-cigarettes, Juul, contains as much nicotine

Karma’s a Witch By Olivia Bettorf ombettorf@lc.edu
Listen Linda Q=A Karma, it is either good or bad. It is hardly ever in between. Why do I mention karma in this months article? Because almost everyone experiences it at one point in life and if you somehow haven’t, you will. Oh you will. The known mystical power of karma is those who give good karma receive good karma back, but those who give bad karma get the sweet taste of evil karma
Not that getting married young is bad or anything. I personally think that if you do by chance meet your “one and only” that it is an amazing thing due to how many people in my generation haven’t had all that much luck. Most people I’ve heard stories from have some pretty good “karma’s a witch” stories. A lot of the stories I’ve listen to are from my older friend’s high school days. Can You Really Be Friends With Your Ex? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Coming to terms with one’s sexuality is at times a long and exhausting process. It took me many years to completely accept myself, and try to venture into the dating world. I knew in my heart Josette wasn’t trying to hurt my feelings, but I also knew that I wasn’t asking too much from her. By spring, I had begun to wonder what the summer would bring and wondered about plans with Josette. Would we go to Forest Park to enjoy a Shakespearean play together? Would we go to the Zoo, one of her favorite places? Before I ever had much of a chance to think on it too hard, the day I knew was coming finally happened. Josette had called me, her voice shaking and bordering on tears, to tell me that she had wanted to break up. Nobody lied, nobody fought, and nobody cheated, but we just weren’t right for each other. Josette had expressed how differently we view love and the ways it affected her without me knowing, how despite the fact of how well we worked together, she knew in her heart that I wasn’t the one for her and she wasn’t the one for me. Josette said something to me during through her tears that I will never forget, “I want you to go find the love story you deserve.” While what she said still hurt, I knew in my heart she was right. Despite the fact I enjoyed Josette in my life and found her company delightful when I had it, I couldn’t see myself in

her future. We wanted very different futures, we had different ideas about expressions of love, we had issues with continuous communication, and eventually we would only grow to resent each other if we didn’t stop then. While I was sad to face another breakup, because breakups are never easy, my heart wasn’t broken. Perhaps I felt more hurt over the fact it had hurt less, because despite how much I wanted to love her the way I had others before her, I didn’t really. Josette made me feel content, and was a mostly healthy dynamic overall, but there was a deeper spark missing that couldn’t be ignored. I loved Josette as a person, but I wasn’t in love with her the way I was supposed to be. While we were in agreement that breaking up was the right choice, we also decided that we did want to try to still be friends, but only after we’d had adequate time apart. I have learned from previous experiences that you can’t rush into a new arrangement within any type of relationship, and that includes platonic. While my heart may not have been broken, I was still sad for the peace I had lost, and wanted the proper time to mourn it. Josette and I made a point to stay apart for about a month in order to have healthy space to get over each other and move on. I was shockingly back to being my usual self after about two weeks, which I take as a serious sign of my growth when it comes to relationships. Once we got back in contact and started spending alone time together again, things were a lot easier. We went to fun places like the mall, the zoo, and even a sunflower field to take beautiful pictures. Even though we were broken up, I found myself not thinking about any pain I had
once had with Josette and instead enjoyed my day with a dear friend. We weren’t ever carnal or impulsive with each other, and we didn’t expect things out of each other more than what was necessary. We would have a fun time together, and generally enjoyed each other’s company. It at times was almost like we’d never even dated at all. In fact, when Big and I had gotten back together, Josette was one of the most understanding and kind friends I had about the situation. She expressed nothing but happiness for me having found my great lost love. It brings me joy to know Josette really does only want my happiness, just like I only want hers. I’m telling you this because it is important to be honest with yourself and others about what you want in a relationship, whether it be platonic or romantic. Lying to yourself or to others won’t ever get you what you want, and it certainly won’t ever make you happy. So, can ex-lovers still find a way to be friends? Well, it depends on what the other person wants in the situation. If there’s still residual feelings and hope for getting back together, and the other person doesn’t share those feelings, trying to force a platonic situation would be toxic for both involved. However, if both are on the same page and wish to take some healthy time apart to heal and then slowly move towards a normal friendship, it can actually be done. It’s probably rarer because most breakups aren’t mutual, but friendship isn’t impossible. I am very lucky to have Josette as a good friend, and for the time we’re able to spend together. Sometimes, we date people who aren’t meant to be our forever, and that’s okay. Josette wasn’t my forever, but she is my friend, and for me that’s enough.
