Is Anybody Else Already Really Excited For Halloween? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Happy Halloween, everybody! I know that technically it’s only September, but as an avid lover of Halloween, I don’t care. I couldn’t be more excited if I tried, as Halloween is by far the best holiday of the year. There’s so many things someone can do during this wonderful pumpkin-spiced time of the year! A pair of lovers could go to the pumpkin patch together, best friends can run through a haunted corn maze, mothers and daughters can share a bag of candy corn, young sons can dress up as
their favorite Marvel superhero, fathers can watch their favorite horror movies on TV, and of course everyone is now free to enjoy pumpkin spiced lattes from Starbucks. There is also something to be said for trick-or-treating on the magical night, even though you may now be a giver of the candy rather than a receiver. It’s so interesting to see how creative some people can get with their costumes, and how some couples

There’s an aura of mystery in the air as people pick their costumes from the various figures they identify with and go with their loved ones to have a fun night. I would encourage all those currently reading to enjoy the excitement of Halloween and to keep an eye out for what you may choose for your costume this year! Mirror Mirror, is This the Best Twisted Tale in the Land? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
I have been reviewing the Twisted Tale Series for some time now, and have yet to not be captivated by the interesting diversions from the Disney film I had grown up with. Mirror Mirror by Jen Calonita has succeeded in a much-needed retelling of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Growing up, many people felt that Snow White was one of the least interesting or self-sufficient princesses, without much personality throughout the story. This book spins that entire idea on its head, giving both Snow White and her Prince some much-needed character development. Warning! The rest of this article will contain major spoilers. For those of you who are interested in buying and reading “Mirror Mirror,” the book is available for purchase in most bookstores and on Amazon.com.
plan a coup against the Evil Queen. The reader is also blessed with flashbacks from the Evil Queen’s point of view, displaying her descent into darkness, as well as the rather beautiful love story of how Snow White’s parents met and fell in love. We also get a more detailed look into Snow White’s thought process as she deals with the aftermath of many years of isolation by the Evil Queen, and learns to be strong enough to fight back for her people.
I can’t express my admiration enough for the writing style of this book, as well as exemplifying Snow White as being a smart, patient, and tactful princess, determined to regain her rightful place on the throne. At the same time, the flashbacks during the story also shows how the Evil Queen’s actions could be made by anyone, and how easy it is for someone to become corrupt in the right The biggest example of the changes made to circumstances. I can’t express enough to Disney this classic story is the fact that it is actually Snow fans that they should read this book, especially White’s Prince who is poisoned instead of her, those who have always had a wish to see more leading Snow to band together her kingdom to from this classic princess.

When it comes to the fight game anything can happen, and in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), nothing could be further from the truth in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) lightweight division. On Sept. 7 2019 at The Arena, on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, we will see a title unification bout for the Undisputed UFC Lightweight Championship, between the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov and the Interim UFC Lightweight Champion Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier.
Hence the reason that on April 13th the UFC put together an interim title fight for the lightweight belt, between top ranked contender Dustin Poirier and UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway. The featherweight Khabib Nurmagomedov is the first Muslim UFC champ Holloway champion, holding an impressive 27-0 undefeated UFC 242 poster. moved up to 155 streak, and is ranked as the #2 pound for pound Photo from MMAMania.com pounds to take on best fighter in the UFC. With the reason being that he possesses virtually the same tools that the #2 ranked lightweight contender Tony Ferguson has, who is a man that many believe is the most dangerous opponent that Khabib could possibly face. As a matter of fact, Khabib and Tony have been scheduled to face four times in the past, but were unable to fight due to health reasons of one or the other, and both fighters have gone undefeated for the last decade.
Ferguson was actually supposed to fight Poirier instead of Holloway in that interim title bout, but was unable to fight that time either. So with the fight between Khabib and Dustin just around the corner, Sharks are in the water. Album Review
Book of Dreams by Steve Miller Band By Dillon Neibel dneibel@lc.edu
I remember the first time I heard this album; I was driving on a Sunday evening, and I know it was a Sunday because I heard it on the radio station KSHE 95. Being a lifetime listener of the station, I knew then that because of the time and day I must be listening to their “7th Day” program. A program in which the station plays 7 albums in their entirety. Hearing the sounds of what one may describe as a waving siren and an alien spaceship, I immediately recognized the song to be “Threshold”, which is really more of a short instrumental intro that leads into “Jet Airliner”. Once I heard that familiar drum beat come into play and the guitar follow suit to ride so gracefully along beside it, I couldn’t help but find myself driving along rhythm road with the Steve Miller Band. Bouncing in tune with the tunes sitting in my drivers seat I belted along in harmony with my radio, singing “Leavin’ home, out on the road, I’ve been down before...”
Next, came the first song on the album that I hadn’t actually heard before. Although it was new to me, it was one of those songs that you seem to recognize so subconsciously, that you might actually find yourself singing the lyrics despite having never heard them. That song is called “Wish Upon A Star,” and the song I believe to be the track that defines the entire album.
Book of Dreams- Steve Miller Band. Image provided by Google from Pinterest.com
Eventually I finished the album and actually drove home. With precisely a dozen songs fashioned in complete synchronicity, I got to re-listen to other great classics like “Jungle Love” and “The Stake”. I also got to discover new great tunes in the likes of the mystifying jam, “Sacrifice”, accompanied by its intro track “Electro Lux Imbroglio”. With the true Steve Miller fashioned track “My Own Space” paving the way for the folky medieval jam “Babes in the Wood” to finish it out, this album is a true testament to what greatly composed music can be.
another familiar diddy, “Swing Town”. If you’ve ever heard this bopping song, you would know that “diddy” is the only proper way to describe this fifties-esque singalong, hip swaying classic. I find it worth mentioning that at one point I veered off from my regular path, simply to take Hopping into the next song came one of my absolute the scenic backroads that I’ve become so familiar favorites, “True Fine Love.” From lines like “I ain’t with over my years living in my rural little town, complainin’ but I’d sure like to find me A true, fine for no other reason but to enjoy this musical love,” to “So come on get your rocks off, I’m gonna journey further. And, while I can’t say for certain Harmonizing to the best of my ability as I knock your socks off, you’ll see,” I couldn’t help but when I heard the DJ name this wondrous album, hummed out the ending of the song, I was left to think how great of a time it would be to dance I am certain that when I heard him say it, I felt a in a brief moment of elevation. A moment that along to this album with “Someone another, that’s physical level of both agreement and wonder at “Book of Dreams.” was quickly startled and lifted further by yet as sweet as your mother A true, fine love.” Crooning along as if I was a member of the band, lost in the nostalgia of this timeless number, the song faded away. Suddenly, a whirling wind started blowing through my speakers, then a guitar played over it, then a harmonica, and that’s when I knew that it must be “Winter Time”. Could it be another classic ballad to groove and sing to on my Sunday drive? Evidently so.

econd, the obvious and annoying implications that lesbians will date transmen because they were born female. This is very far from true, and incredibly invalidating to a lot of people. Transmen aren’t women; they have to go through the rigorous process of hormones, surgery, legally changing their name, legally being recognized as their gender identity, and the feelings of gender dysphoria. Lesbians date women, plain and simple. Lesbians are attracted to the female form and female psyche, which a transgender man doesn’t have. Transmen aren’t women, and therefore lesbians won’t date them. To imply that a very masculine gay woman and a transman are the same is incredibly transphobic and alarmingly backwards logic.
T
hird, the deceit in this story goes as far as being outright illegal and tries to behave like this is a romantic comedy. “ADAM” deceives his love interest, Gillian, into believing that he is twenty years old when he is in fact underage, as well as lie about being transgender in hopes of pursuing her. Gillian sleeping with Adam, believing he is an adult when he is not, is unknowingly committing statutory sexual assault. As if that weren’t serious enough on its own, when Adam sleeps with her and lies to her about using his male anatomy, pretending to be using something else, he has committed clear sexual assault by deception since Gillian didn’t consent to what was actually being used.
lied about his age, or about being trans, and in fact expresses further interest because she imagined what it would be like if he were “a real boy,” as directly quoted from the book. Implying, again, that transmen aren’t “real men”. Anyone in real life should, and would, be absolutely furious. They’d been lied to, made a perpetrator of statutory sexual assault, and a victim of sexual assault by deception. Does Gillian care? Not even a little, and even goes on to date more cisgender men from then on. This is a dangerous example of the idea that corrective sexual assault, in which someone changes someone else’s orientation through sexual abuse, works. This is a serious issue that LGBTQ+ people have been fighting against for hundreds of years. To have LGBTQ+ people portray this as okay on screen or in print is a slap in the face to everyone who has ever been through this kind of horror.

mockery of other gay women and of the transgender community for a cheap buck makes me sick. Let me be clear, I am not assuming Ariel Schrag did this for a cheap buck, I am speaking based on her exact words as stated in an interview on Afterellen.com, “I was like ‘I honestly don’t care. Whatever you think will sell the most books or get it the most attention.’” And “But people are really angry specifically about appropriating an oppressed identity. I just think that’s fascinating to think about because what is so terrible about appropriating an oppressed identity?” I will make a note to mention that most of the LGBTQ+ actors and actresses in the movie have come out since the release of the “ADAM” trailer to reveal they actually weren’t told what movie they’d been hired for, been given a vague fake title and no basic synopsis of what the film was about, and as extras in the movie had very minimal information. Many of the extras advocate against the movie’s existence, as well as admitted to feeling awful to have been a part of such a terrible project. I would suggest to give proper blame where it is due, which is not with the extras who didn’t even know the real name of the movie they were paid to be a part of. In short, don’t read the book, don’t see the movie, and don’t think this is anything close to an accurate representation of anybody in the LGBTQ+ community. In the meantime, try watching “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” instead, a story that shows the clear evil of conversion therapy and trying to change people when they don’t need to change. Ariel Schrag, I recommend you specifically watch it as well, because you could really learn a thing or two.

Trailblazers Face Familiar
Foes in Alumni Friendlies
Long before Major League Soccer was planning on coming to St. Louis, colleges in the area were churning out great soccer and great soccer teams for decades. Lewis and Clark’s soccer team is no exception to that rule.
“We’ve had a lot of good players,” said longtime coach Tim Rooney. “Players see the reputation of the school and want to play here.” Rooney serves as head coach to the women’s team, and assistant to the men’s team. He has been a central stalwart of Lewis And Clark soccer, winning over 800 games between the men’s and women’s teams. He was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2009. As always, he’s more focused on the season ahead rather than talking about previous accomplishments. When asked about

Speaking to Pete Hayes of the Telegraph, Hodge added “Rashaun will hopefully pick it up from last year. He’ll be our captain and we’ll look for good things from him, obviously.” The Trailblazer women and men have just started their preseason campaign. The men’s team began regular season play on Aug. 23, welcoming Marshalltown to Godfrey. The women’s side started their season on Sept. 4 when they traveled to Lincoln Trail College.

Restoration For The Heart Of Trailblazer Nation By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
The central hub of Lewis And Clark Athletics and de facto home of the Trailblazers, the Riverbend Arena on the Godfrey campus, is getting a bit of a face-lift this semester. Not just to be enjoyed by student-athletes and athletic staff, the renovations will also be apparent to students attending classes in the Exercise Science classroom and dental clinic, or those just wanting to chill out in Riverbend Arena’s future second floor student lounge. According to Lewis And Clark Administration Vice President Lori Artis the renovation will encompass the entirety of the Riverbend Arena building. A new gym floor installed and finished before Trailblazer volleyball practice started in August highlights the renovations, and will be on display for all who attend a volleyball or basketball game. Outside of the gym itself, the rest of Riverbend Arena will start to take a different shape as renovations continue. The building is sporting a fresh roof and an upgraded gutter system, HVAC upgrades, waterproofing measures, electrical improvements, and interior renovations that will be apparent to all who visit Riverbend Arena. Speaking as a humble college paper sports writer, the improved HVAC system will hopefully mean the basketball months are a bit warmer in the RBA. When the first floor upgrades are finished soon, students will notice the coaching staff offices will have been moved up to the second floor.

Joining those offices on the new and improved second floor will be a new student lounge. Administration VP Lori Artis said “[the new lounge will be] for students who frequent Riverbend Arena for classes in the dental clinic, classes in the Exercise Science classroom, student-athletes, and anyone looking for a quiet place to study or hang out on campus.” The decision to renovate the entirety of the arena was made official at a Lewis and Clark Board of Trustees meeting this past January. The overall estimated budget sits at just about $2.9 million, coming from Protection, Health, and Life Safety funds and Capital Project Funds.

Every year since August 1, 1995 the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show has never failed, never stopped showing and has always kept the magic alive. Can We All Agree That Jeffrey Epstein’s Death is Suspicious? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Trigger warning, this article will mention topics involving suicide and child sexual abuse. Please either proceed with caution or stop reading now. Now, maybe this is just me, but something is not adding up at Jeffrey Epstein’s death. For those who do not know, Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy American Financier who had been convicted in 2008 of running a child prostitution ring for many members of the elite class, including politicians and celebrities. Epstein had also recently been in the news once again for being arrested for sex trafficking charges on July 6, 2019. After an investigation by the FBI in Epstein’s home, thousands of photos, including photos of naked underaged people, had been recovered along with a large sum of money and a passport with various stamps from many different countries. All of this is
important information because it has been revealed there is a large amount of evidence that could potentially incriminate many powerful people as being pedophiles and sex traffickers. That being said, barely over a month later, Epstein was found dead in his jail cell on August 10, 2019. While it has been ruled as a suicide, Epstein had been on suicide watch before his death, after he’d been found with suspicious neck wounds on July 23. Now, the most obvious option for who could be behind Epstein’s mysterious departure from this world could be one of the other inmates who took justice into their own hands. This wouldn’t be surprising, since those who abuse children are often the ones who are targeted most in prisons for obvious reasons. However, Epstein specifically had a more complex case than that, with

Only time will tell the truth behind these circumstances, and Personally, I believe firmly that I will be paying very close attention someone powerful had Epstein taken as this investigation continues. out so that he wouldn’t ever be able to testify and properly incriminate them. The real question is who specifically could have been the one to call the hit? Some theorize that President Trump, former President Clinton, and many more politicians could have potential cause to want Epstein’s death. There is so far not enough evidence to suggest anyone in particular, but I personally don’t believe that this convenient turn of events is a coincidence. While I am sincerely happy that Epstein, undoubtedly a monster, can no longer cause any harm to anyone again, I am also worried deeply for

The College Experience By Gail Harper abharper@lc.edu
I like to brag about the fact that I was 16 when I started college. It makes people think that I’m really smart, maybe a genius child prodigy. Truth is, I just did Lewis and Clark’s dual enrollment program, which means I took college classes while still in high school. The credits from these classes counted for both my high school diploma and towards college. It’s given me a pretty awesome head start with my schooling, and exposure to a lot of experiences that have shaped and continue to shape who I am.
The college experience is something that’s talked about a lot, though its meaning differs greatly from person to person. For one student, the college experience may mean hookup culture, getting high, and being careless. For another, it’s all about preparation for the future. And I say, to each their own. However, It’s important to remember that the meaning for one person may change over time. It sure did for me.
course, a great mindset, and is an important goal for any student. But it can quickly become dangerous if that’s all you care about. Math was never my strong suit, so Intermediate Algebra had me crying in my room out of frustration almost daily. Computer literacy, however, was a breeze (thanks, Mr. Robeen)! When all I cared about was the grade, it hindered me from having fun, and I got bogged down by the fear of getting anything below a 92 percent.

Illionis School System By Olivia Bettorf ombettorf@lc.edu
Listen Linda Q=A Welcome back to school everybody! And for those who are new to our humble little college, welcome! We have a lot of fun here and it’s much better than high school. Scratch that. It’s way better than high school, because if you wish to think like me... Students pay for schooling, to get a piece of paper, to say they are qualified, to work in a certain field, so that the government isn’t as involved with college. However, college is still a whole lot better than high school. Let me tell you why. Needless to say that the government or the state doesn’t entirely care about, ya know, southern Illinois. Some of you might be from around here, but I can tell you from first hand experience that our K-12 system is not all that and a bag of
chips… it’s not even a bag of chips, honestly, and if it was, it would be those gross-tasting chips that are stale but at the same time way too overpriced for the quality. At least, that’s my standpoint, though others might say differently. I went to a small school in a smallish town that wasn’t all that great at football, but had good people in classes. Now this school was the definition of overworked and underpaid for the teachers who generally cared about their jobs. But, there would always be those teachers who thought they were hot stuff yet couldn’t teach a pencil how to write. There were also those biased teachers, advisors, or coaches you had to deal with if you joined a certain club or sport.
I’m not talking about bias towards other students (that happens in general to everyone trying to achieve education to help or better one’s life), but towards other programs in the school. It was usually the lower-funded programs. There. I said it. Lower funded programs seemed to have a grudge towards sport programs. And yes, it was because of the money.

Why On Earth Are We Still Gendering Clothes? By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
For as long as I could remember, I had been told what was boy’s clothes and what was girl’s clothes. When you’re a little kid, you accept what you’re told very easily by your parents. Boys get shirts with footballs on them, and girls get pink dresses. However, as I grew older, I started to realize that for a lot of clothing, there wasn’t as much difference between what were in the Men’s and Women’s section as we as a society think there are. Sure, there are some things that can be argued as more masculine or feminine, like the differences between a tuxedo or a bodycon dress. Those aren’t the clothes I’m talking about today, though. I am specifically referring to more basic
clothes, such as pants, button down shirts, T-shirts, socks, shoes, and so on. I began to notice the unfair balance with clothing a few years ago when it came to flannels specifically. Men’s flannel shirts are actually made with cozy flannel material that can keep someone warm in the cold weather. Women’s flannel shirts aren’t actually made with flannel material, they’re ridiculously thin plaid shirts that wouldn’t keep anybody warm for even a second! Why do boys get to enjoy being warm outside while everyone else freezes? The only real difference is their material, since otherwise they look exactly the same! Same with men’s T-shirts. Has anybody ever noticed
shoes I have owned in the past twenty-two years. I felt like I could easily run a marathon in these shoes! They’re my current go-to shoe now, and I love them.

Coming to terms with one’s sexuality is at times a long and exhausting process. It took me many years to completely accept myself, and try to venture into the dating world. Over time, I have ended up collecting stories and lessons learned from my dating life, which I will now be sharing every month for roughly the next year. All names will be changed to protect the privacy of everyone mentioned, as they deserve anonymity and respect- no matter how bad the stories may have ended. Instead of telling these stories in chronological order, I will be telling them by order of importance of their morals. Long before I thought of Queer Dating Stories, another writer with curly hair had decided to write about relationships. Her name was Carrie Bradshaw, who would write honestly about her experiences along with those of her closest friends. The main man in Carrie’s life who seemed to always keep coming around, was Mr. Big. I like to sometimes think of myself as a lesbian version of Carrie, and I of course have my own Ms. Big. Rather Mx. Big, since they’re nonbinary. For the more
loyal readers, they know that I have written about Big before. I had told the story of our love, our break up, and how they had left me for another woman.
However, just like on TV and the movies, nothing is ever as simple as it first appears. A year later, a few relationships later, the stars aligned and brought Big and I together again. Now, some of my readers may be a bit surprised or skeptical. You can imagine my surprise when I found myself speaking to Big again, getting caught up on how our lives had been and what we were up to now. We also, of course, talked about the first article because to my surprise they still followed my writing even after we stopped talking.

for yet. They felt they were about to spiral for reasons unrelated to me, and didn’t want to drag me down. They were honestly, in their own way, trying to spare me from pain. Once I was given this information and we attempted to speak on friendly terms, nature took its course. Rather than repeat our unhealthy pattern though, we discussed another option: we start over. To say that it was an easy conclusion to let Big and I try again would be untrue. It took a lot of talking it out, a lot of forgiveness on both parts, and a true willingness to see it through. After all, my heart had been broken before by Big, and it was something I took serious time to process and grow from. I had to ask myself the biggest question anyone can when it comes to relationships: Should I give the person who broke my heart a second chance?
This is specifically how I found out the reason why Big left. What I hadn’t known, was that Big didn’t even know she had reached out to me. Our going theory is that Natasha had gone behind Big’s back into their phone to find my number and text me. Conveniently, Natasha never mentioned this to Big at any point during their own on-again-offagain relationship for I chose yes. Cigarette Age Increase: It’s Garbage By Olivia Bettorf ombettorf@lc.edu
Let us start with the fact that Illinois just put down a bogus law for people who were born after 1998: they can no longer purchase any tobacco products. Yet, we can still vote, go into the military, or play the lottery. However, some people think this will be a good thing.
Brenda. That is not how it works. That trick has never worked, given the fact there are teenagers who drink underage, and have been since the law passed in the mid 80s prohibiting those younger than 21 from drinking.
Truthfully, this only ticks off 18-20 year olds “Our youth will never and they will find it very start smoking or get annoying that they now addicted to such a have to ask someone 21 nasty product and or over for help buying unhealthy habit.” No, the tobacco they have
grown to enjoy after a hard day of work. “Then maybe they’ll kick the addiction if they have to ask for help and don’t want to bother those who can. And people wouldn’t help break the law.” NO! Again, incorrect. It is just harder and more bothersome to those not of age yet. And if an “underage” person has a friend over 21, it’s doubtful that the friend would even bat an eye
at picking up a pack of cigarettes for them. There is also the fact that people who use tobacco as a mind relaxer or stress reliever may not be able to afford a doctor’s mind-blowing fee to get a prescription. All because our governor thought it would be a good idea to have people cut back on cigarettes or other tobacco products and then raise the prices
even higher. How does that make sense to anybody? What is the purpose? Not a very good one, in my and others’ eyes. Just because you don’t like something does not mean everybody has to agree with you. I say, if I am old enough to decide what to do with my life, vote in any election, play any type of lottery I chose, and everything that all adults can do, I should
be allowed to choose what to do with my body, including what I consume. As mentioned before, underage people will surely find a way to purchase tobacco products as they were allowed to before, regardless of the law. While the lawmakers may say that we as classified adults are not allowed to do what all other adults can, the restrictions seem unfair and unbalanced.

What it’s Like Watching All Your Friends Get Married Before You By Ashtyn Britt abritt@lc.edu
Being in your early twenties is a very weird time. Some people you know from high school are in college, some are buying homes, some are in jail, have become addicts, or in some cases are getting married and having children. I am fortunate enough to know multiple personal friends and acquaintances getting married this year, and have found myself caring quite a bit too much about the difference between the colors of eggshell and porcelain. As someone who is unlikely to get married myself any time soon, it can be a bit jarring to watch my childhood friends
be so advanced in life while I am still having issues picking between ramen and Taco Bell for dinner. Don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t be happier for my friends and how happy they are with their lives and their choices. Getting married is a really big commitment that should never be taken lightly, and it warms my heart that so many people I know have found their person and are confident in the progress they’ve made in life. However, it can at times also be a bit jarring. When people
we know make major steps in their lives, it can cause people to have reflection over their own lives. Currently I am working on getting my degree and figuring out how to be financially stable and independent, with no sight of marriage or homeownership so far. It has more than once made me wonder if perhaps, I am behind my friends. If so, what does that say about me? Is there some sort of secret of adulthood that my friends had access to before me? Am I unlovable because nobody has put a ring on my finger yet? Does anybody else feel the same way as me? Is
there something wrong doubts or reflection, with me? that doesn’t mean they’ve failed or even Of course not! I’m that they’re actually not even twenty-two unhappy in their lives. years old yet! The Broadway Capitalization Epidemic By Gail Harper abharper@lc.edu
In the 2018-2019 season, Broadway gained more revenue and sold more tickets than it ever had. Musical theater has never been more popular. So why are so many shows closing? Despite pulling a whopping 1.8 billion dollar gross and hosting nearly 15 million attendees, some of the most popular shows from this past season are closing their doors. This includes Waitress, Be More Chill, The Cher Show, What The Constitution Means to Me, Pretty Woman: The Musical, King Kong, and many, many more. Around 15 shows have announced their closings this season. Broadway shows close all the time, one might object, why is this such a big deal? Well, as
stated previously, this Broadway season brought in more money than any season in history. And the majority of the shows that are closing have had a tremendously short run—usually less than one season. Be More Chill ran for six months, including an initial month of previews, and brought in $13.5 million. The Cher Show ran for nine months, also with a month of previews. Its revenue gross was approximately $33 million. The average run for a Broadway show is approximately a year.
regards to Broadway, capitalization means while the price of putting on a show may only be a certain dollar amount, there are other factors that cause the profit to be lessened. The production cost of a show doesn’t include the price of payment for the actors and stagehands, the price to keep the lights on in the theater, costumes, props, sound, etc. Production cost only covers enough to get the show’s feet off the ground, and not weekto-week expenses. The capitalization cost of King Kong clocks in at $36.5 million, so it would have to make In all of its record- more than that back to breaking glory, why break even. did this successful season come to a head Two big factors for new with so many shows high production costs closing? The answer are the Internet, and boils down to one Bruce Springsteen. The word: capitalization. In Internet helped drive
up capitalization costs with newer ways to spread information and the hype surrounding groundbreaking shows (see: Hamilton). Social media was even a major element in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen, another revolutionary show. With new expectations and multitudes of fresh fans on the scene, it makes sense that capitalization costs would be driven up. The other factor, Springsteen on broadway, set records for ticket revenue. Springsteen was number one on the list for per-ticket average revenue and number nine by total sales. This brought in people who would otherwise have no interest in going to Broadway, a new group of possible attendees to being exposed to the theatre.
We are now witnessing the repercussions of Springsteen leaving Broadway, which caused ticket sales to decrease by 10%. Sadly, as almost everyone knows, Broadway tickets are expensive (to put it nicely). Fans across the country—and the world—would love to attend, but motivation all comes down to money for many producers. So, ticket prices remain high, which results in fewer people being economically able to attend shows. Katherine Steele outlines this in her YouTube video, “Why so many Broadway Shows are CLOSING”, and mentions two ways Broadway shows can try to bounce back from that capitalization loss: licensing (smaller theaters can buy the
ability to put the show on) and touring. Both of these options are helpful for fans not able to travel to Broadway (whether financially or geographically) see the shows. An easy and enjoyable approach for you to help the future of theatre is by supporting your local theaters. Many theaters in the St. Louis area (not just the Fox!) offer popular shows with intimate, big talent energy. Alton Little Theater, Florissant Civic Center Theater, The Marcelle, and Gaslight Theater are just a few of the many theaters this area’s talent has to offer. Explore your local theater listings, and take a chance— you might be surprised by what interests you!

Illinois Football Preview: Lovie’s Lucky Year? By Nathan Tucker nrtucker@lc.edu
It’s been five long years since the last time Illinois Fighting Illini football has touched a postseason bowl game. 82 out of 130 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision, the top tier of college football) teams make a postseason bowl game, effectively meaning that Illinois has been in the bottom 50 of the FBS.

Yes, this is both on and off the field, Illinois’s best chance to is the loss of All-Big make a bowl game in Ten defensive lineman the Lovie era. No, it’s Bobby Roundtree this not necessary for the season. leader, just everything about Bobby Roundtree,’’ head coach Lovie Smith said at media day. ‘‘We’ll miss him. But the way our team can honor him is with its play. He’ll always be involved and be close this year.’
Excitement is growing on the other side of football. The Illinois offense was putrid if not just flat out dull in 2017, ranking 127th overall in the FBS and averaging a measly 15 points per game. They jumped 34 spots in that ranking last season, and averaged 26 points per game. If the Illini defense last season could have actually managed to tackle a few guys, they might have gone to a bowl game. Joining that improving offense this season will be two things the Illini have been lacking in recent years: an experienced quarterback and a highly touted quarterback recruit. Brandon Peters, a quarterback who transferred from perennial football power/relevant force
Michigan, brings legit experience to the depth chart. Isaiah Williams, a highly sought-after recruit from Trinity Catholic in St. Louis, is already being pegged to be the star Illinois has desperately craved.
But who starts this season? One can assume that Lovie and his staff didn’t bring in Brandon Peters to sit on the bench as Isaiah Williams gets his footing on the turf in Champaign? Peters should be starting, allowing Williams to learn from the sidelines, and when the opportunity arises, Williams can relieve Peters if need be and take snaps for himself and show the coaching staff what he really brings to the Illini. Brandon Peters isn’t the only transfer to bolster the Illini on the offensive side of the ball. Two wide receivers are coming from another perennial football power/ relevant force in USC, Trevon Sidney and Josh Imatorbhebhe.
Both were highly touted coming out of high school and give Peters two reliable targets, and give the team more options. Last year, Offensive Coordinator Rod Smith’s offense relied heavily on the running backs and mobile quarterbacks who could run. This year’s offense has threats all over the field. Simply put, the Illini will be as good as their defense allows them to be. New recruits and more experience will help the defense, but losing Bobby Roundtree is a big blow to the defensive front. If the defense can simply not let games get out of hand, the offense might have the firepower to keep the Illini alive in any contest this season. “If you ask me if I think we’re ready to compete and contend, absolutely.” Lovie Smith quipped at media day. He has faith in the progress they’ve made, but acknowledges there’s work to be done. “We have to be better, coaching staff wise, bringing in better players, facilities and all that. But we’re excited to see the progression.”
schedule for the Illini against Akron, UConn, and Eastern Michigan *should* give the Illini a 3-0 start to the season, meaning a bowl game would only be 3 wins out of 9 games away. Seems doable! However, if they struggle in these nonconference games, the conference schedule will be an uphill battle. Everyone that they beat, and everyone that beat them, is better this season. Ultimately, what Illinois fans and onlookers should be hoping for is steady, marked improvements to how Lovie Smith’s Illini play football. Lovie doesn’t need to make a bowl game to keep his job if he can prove to the fan base and most importantly Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman that the team is on the upswing. Sure, bowl games are nice, a big television audience watching the (checks Google) Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl and a check for a few million dollars that the players will never see, but simple continued improvements would be considered a success for an Illini football team that hasn’t seen stability in ages.
A fairly relaxing nonconference
